Helmet
Aftertaste
Rating: 8(on a scale of 10)

"The twisting and bumpy road to notoriety in the music business in
the music business for Helmet is beginning to look and sound a lot like that
of Seattle grungers-turned-rockers, Soundgarden. The New York city-based
Helmet first struck in 1989 with the indie release, Strap It On, followed by
the major label albums, Meantime and Betty, two diverse types yet true grit
pieces of work. Soundgarden toiled in indie land for years before signing on
the dotted line and releasing Badmotorfinger, a classic album but not a
band-breaking one. It wasn't until the band found a comfortable medium
between grunge and rock'n'roll on Superunknown that they were heralded for
their musical talents. [Goes on to say later] Aftertaste's songs are
corroded with guitars of all sounds, some like Soundgarden. Like
Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, Hamilton is not known for insightful and deep
lyrics. Their lyrics are downright silly and just written because some words
happen to rhyme and most have less than fifteen lines of words. In other
words, don't look for the any Vedder-or Corgan-ish musings here."

Looks like the author of this piece is misinformed about the band and implied
his dislike for the lyrics Chris writes.

Subject: Why we buy

No one should ever be ashamed of buying a record because of who is on
it. Isn't that why we buy records, to get music by people whose music
we like? I bought TOTD because of who is on it. How many of us would
ever have bought Hater or Wellwater Conspiracy if we hadn't known who
was on it? I've acquired some of my favorite records by reading Kim's
t-shirts! We can't all be Peter Buck and shell out for everything that
looks like it might be cool. Marketing isn't totally evil if it points
some of us in the direction of what we want and probably didn't know
existed.

Subject: Official Releases and Bootlegs

hello.

in my opinion, the remark about the work and effort the band puts in
official releases is true most of the time, but not always. years ago i
bought BMF only to find out a while later that a new BMF with an extra disc
(SOMMS) had been released. i wasn't happy about having to buy BMF again
(and i didnt). then i got Superunknown and a month later every store had
the international
version with an extra song (she likes surprises) and then kind of the same
thing happened with DOTU and Down Under on the Upside. not much work or
effort put in the three different new versions. of course i want to have
them all, but i dont have the money to buy albums twice. so if i ever find
BMF/SOMMS and Fresh Deadly Rarities sitting together in a store i have no
doubt i would get FDR, simply because it has more songs i don't have (now
if SOMMS was an ep it would be cheaper and things would be different).

speaking about singles and b-sides placed in a context that is IMO also
true
most of the time (the flower single is a very good example) but not always.
some singles are just a couple of old b-sides and one new song in an
attractive package (and throw in a poster too). not much effort (in the
musical content) in there either. of course i think every single is cool
and if i could get them all i would, even if that meant i would have every
song ten times, but id
rather buy a bootleg with that one new song and others i don't have.

i guess my point is that some official releases are made to take advantage
of the fact that fans want every song. therefore taking more of our money
for less. i dont know if it's soundgarden's or A&M's fault, and i don't
care. i'll buy them anyway, what the hell, but if i can save some money
buying a bootleg instead of 4 or 5 not so good singles or whatever, i will.

i don't know how you guys find bootlegs anyway, i just spent a month in
L.A. and San Francisco and didn't see a single one. maybe i wasn't looking
in the right places.

bye.

this isn't terribly useful information but, i was looking up addresses and

live in minneapolis). wouldn't it be cool if your name was chris cornell,

If you want the guitar tablature transcribed for BHS, there is a few places
you can get it on the 'net (if you're into Netscape or Internet Explorer),
for example, at:

http://www.ee.fit.edu/users/northcut/TABS/

[this will get you to a menu - just follow it through to Soundgarden and
then Superunknown]

You have to use some interpolation to get the whole of the song and listen
to the album for the timings, and the solo itself is actually missing. If
you really REALLY want the solo, give me a line, but it's a big one to
transcribe (hell, we're talking about triplet demi-semi quavers for much of
the way, and as they're playing in 9/8 for the solo, there's a helluva lot
of those in a bar) - I have the entire tablature for Superunknown (and BMF
and LTL and - soon - DOTU).

The deal with the solo "rhythm" track (play around with this to get the
timing) - note dropped D tuning and bastardised final three chords (I don't
know who figured out that chord...) - and this is repeated throughout the
solo. Bass guitar doubles this rhythm track (except the final three chords!)

okay, this is how i play it (and no, this is not exact timing, it's
not that hard to get when you play along. drop D tuning):

D: 0-5-------------8 0-3 0-2

that's the verse riff, repeat as necessary... add this little ditty
to the end though, after the first time:

D: 0-5 0-3 0-7

G: 2

that very last barre could be wrong... if you find anything better
sounding, lemme know.
play this for the chorus:

D: 0 1 0 0 - 0-5 0-3 0-7

G: 1 2

repeat, and again, last chord is funny, may not be entirely correct.
when he goes to do the screaming "black hole sun! black hole sun!"
part, play this
D: 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 -
A: 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 -
D: 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 -
G: 5 5 5 5 5 5 - 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 2 2 2 2 2 2
B: 5 5 5 5 5 5 - 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 3 3 3 3 3 3
e: 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 - 2 2 2 2 2 2

i have it written down 6 times for each chord, but play it as
necessary, it's not always 6. that last thing is a D chord. barre the
frets, but play mostly on the higher 3 or 4 strings. sounds pretty
close to me. if this gets goofed up through e-mail, let me know and

As side information, if you have the Motorvision video, there is also a song
where Chris breaks into Alive. I'm not absolutely sure of the song, but it's
probably Room a Thousand Years Wide too...

even the "harder" songs came out in acoustic format. I think it would be

Too many - Rusty Cage, Jesus Christ Pose (modified intro), Spoonman, Fell On
Black Days, Full on Kevin's Mum...to name just a handful. Not just to hear

when he goes to do the screaming "black hole sun! black hole sun!"
part, play this
D: 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 -
A: 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 -
D: 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 -
G: 5 5 5 5 5 5 - 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 2 2 2 2 2 2
B: 5 5 5 5 5 5 - 3 3 3 3 3 3 - 3 3 3 3 3 3

okay i know it says only 6 times for each chord, but it varies and
it's not tough to figure out.
that last chord is a D. barre the entire fret where it says so, but
play mostly on the highest 3
or 4 strings. sounds best that way. if this once again gets botched,
yell and scream at me for being dumb.

to end on, where the final verse is and the song just stops (the
"hang my head..." part):

D: 5 5-8 0-3 3-0-2
A: 5 5 5 3 3 2
D: 5 5 5 3 3 2
G: 5 5 5 4

and that it, cc just lets the last note fade. you can bend that last
note hit on th G string if you want, kinda sounds neat. and there you
go, figured out from watching the Fairfax vid, thanks you so much. =

Subject: Aust. RS readers poll, thing and umm something else

Hey ya,

Well since I may as well do my once a year post or so :) it may aswell be
now. A friend lent me her copy of the Aust. Rolling Stone with the readers
poll results in it...well it's only RS so let's see how we did:

Best Male Singer:
1) Eddie Vedder
2) Billy Corgan
3) Chris Cornell

well 2 out of 3 are alright :) I won't say anything about my opinion of BC
singing :)

Best Hard Rock Band:
1) Metallica
2) Pearl Jam
3) Soundgarden

Wierd things: Pearl Jam managed to win both the best and worst album of the
year for No Code...work that one out :)
Pearl Jam also won best band, followed by Smashing Pumpkins and then Garbage.

Of note: You Am I won best Australia Artist and Album (Regurgitator and
Powderfinger followed)
Best Australian Band: Regurgitator, You Am I, Spiderbait

Hope all that wasn't posted before....I know it's pretty crappy a RS readers
poll but well I read it :)

>when i bought the Temple Of The Dog tape (yes, i bought tapes back
>then), it had a sticker on it that said something like; "featuring
>member of Pearl jam and Soundgarden". Suffice to say (and I say this
>kinda shamefully), that's what made me buy it. ..

And this was posted from someone and made me remember when I saw a BMF cd
with a sticker on it reading :) wait for it :) 'WITH CHRIS CORNELL FROM
TEMPLE OF THE DOG' :) :) I am not joking on a BMF cd :) god that made me
laugh :)

Oh well time to go quite once again :) :)

I have a copy of bmf/somms (20) and also a copy of loudest love (18), both
are surplus to my needs. This is not a freebie, the number after each
item is the price, postage included (in the US). Money orders in US funds
preferred. If more than one person responds I'll resort to the name
drawing ritual. Minor details will be worked out w/the individual.
I also have the SuperUnKnown cd release w/ She Likes Surprises (8) and
a BimH cd single (w/ Karaoke (sp?), Bleed Together and el demo version
of Birth Ritual) (8) and a black vinyl copy of that SubPop single of
the month club release (15)...damn...what was the name???:)

I am not opening a store, just thinning things out a bit.
