I disagree, yes from time to time the topics do stray into things besides SG.
However, I think all of us do a great job in talking only about SG or
SG-related topics. In fact, it amazes me day after day how much we still
have to talk about. I have been on this list now for over 2 years (wow) and
everything seems new every day.

Also on todays digest there were 3 mails that were each like 4-5 pages long.
This is not a flame but do we need to put the mailing list etiquette back up
again? Not every post needs to be responded to.... I am sorry it's just one
of those days...

Subject: Some light (but long) relief for all Sommsters..........a Soundgarden review by Yours Truly

Hiya, folks! :-) I am sitting here in a bare room with only this PC, a =
modem, a desk and my chair left. We're about 3/4 of the way through =
moving house to one we've just built. I'm waaaay behind in Somms =
reading (what's new?) but the last time I checked things were looking =
rather rocky again. So, for hopefully a pleasant change, I have finally =
finished my review of the Adelaide Big Day Out that occurred back on 31 =
January, which Soundgarden headlined.

I warn you! It's a long-un. But you'll be pleased to know I won't be =
posting again in a while, since we're not only moving house but silly me =
is changing jobs as well. Hopefully the length of this post will be =
worth it, if you feel about Soundgarden the way I do. Please forgive me =
for taking the time to really build up the whole day - I describe it =
from when it started in the morning, right up until nearly midnight. If =
you are ONLY interested in Soundgarden, then get ready to scroll down a =
long way.................. =20

Cheers from Carolyn the Most Fortunate to have been able to write this =
review! :-)
________________________________________________________________

The day is HOT. It's beautiful, really - calm, blue sky, warm sun. =
Dressed in denim shorts, white singlet, and lace-up black boots, I walk =
with Blair and Tony and many others to the front entrance of Adelaide's =
Wayville Showgrounds, where the final Big Day Out festival is being =
held. Gates open at 11 am, and it is now 11.30 am. There is still a =
huge line-up to get in, even though we all have pre-paid tickets in =
hand. We wait for what seems like an eternity, in stifling heat =
already.....................

I am excited. For tonight I will see Soundgarden again, so soon after =
having seen them in Melbourne only five days ago! That concert is still =
fresh in my memory, and has me aching for more of the same. In the bag =
with me I have a copy of my review of that concert, together with a =
covering letter written to Matt, Kim, Chris and Ben. They are in a =
sealed envelope, marked "MATT CAMERON (SOUNDGARDEN) - from Carolyn of =
somms@mit.edu". I wonder if I'll get a chance today to give this to any =
of the band members - probably not, but I want to try, anyway. I just =
want them to know how much they affect their fans from all around the =
world, and for them to read a review of their concert written by someone =
who is seeing them for the first time.

We inch forward. Again, we are forced to wait. There would be at least =
2,000 of us waiting now. I start to fan my face with the program for =
today ripped from the local newspaper. It is so hot with not much air, =
even though we are outside and it's not even midday.

At last we get through security, and we're into the grounds. Music is =
booming from several stages at once. People are *everywhere*. Already =
I can tell there's going to be far more people here today than there =
were last year. Tony is amazed - wide-eyed - this is the first BDO he's =
been to. There is all the atmosphere of a show, but in this case people =
are all here for the same reason - to see and hear and experience some =
excellent live music. =20

We move past the food, drink and merchandise stalls, past the minor =
stages, and out to the oval where the two main stages are set up =
side-by-side. Hardcore-sounding band, *Where's The Pope?*, is playing =
on Stage 2. We sit on the grass (this early there is still room to =
spread out) to watch and listen. This band seems to love beer, the lead =
singer making several comments like how wonderful it is to drink beer on =
such a beautiful day. I weave my way through the crowd to take my first =
photo, of Where's The Pope? on stage.

Another Aussie band, *Snout*, is up next. They are a hit. The sound =
quality is excellent, travelling well across the oval for everyone to =
hear. Adelaide band *The Superjesus* follow them - by this time it's =
around 2 pm. I go to the merchandise section and spend $100 there - on =
a SG t-shirt for Blair (baseball-type shirt, white with green =
Soundgarden written on it, with navy blue sleeves), a BDO shirt naming =
all the bands, a SG cap (maroon with black embroidery), and the =
obligatory stubby holder which has the day's program printed on it.

Next comes brilliant Adelaide band, *The Mark of Cain*. They're only =
playing here in Adelaide, not travelling around to the rest of the BDOs =
- - I think all of us here feel very lucky, and proud of the boys from our =
State. They are wild and thrashy and are early favourites of us all. I =
take my second photo of them.

I have my first beer around 3 pm. Ah! Thirst-quenching! :-) But I =
decide to let the boys keep drinking while I stick with water from now =
on, or I'll be pickled before night even falls! Sydney band *Frenzal =
Rhomb* take the stage. Definite punk rockers. Their song 'Genius' is =
great! I want to keep listening to them, but the time has come for =
*King Krill* to start on Stage 4. This is a band that Melbourne =
Sommster Hando manages; I knew he was coming over to Adelaide for the =
BDO and wanted to catch up with him after meeting him in person for the =
Melbourne concert last week. I'm impressed with King Krill! I see =
Hando at the end of their set. We hug, say hi, have a quick chat, but =
then he has to go and get more free drinks and food using the Special =
Pass he has (it's a tough life, but someone has to do it!). So back I =
wander to where Blair is still watching Frenzal Rhomb. They are still =
rocking hard - I do so love punk!! I go to the for another photo - the =
singer looks wild - he's wearing a shirt with long black sleeves and =
FUCKWIT printed on the front and hot pink & navy check pants, and he =
tosses his long blonde dreadlocks continuously. Yes, this band is =
good..........

Now it's time to leave Frenzal Rhomb again briefly, to check out what a =
band many of the Somms list has spoken of - *Rocket From The Crypt*. =
LOUD!! Too loud, actually. They are playing on Stage 3 - under a high =
roof that keeps the sound in. I don't mind them, though. They are =
dressed in sequined tops with long black trousers. Boy, they must be =
hot! Their image is very different from their sound, and they'd =
certainly be a good contrast to Soundgarden.

Walking back to meet the guys again I notice all the T-shirts being =
worn, displaying hundreds of different bands. I get a thrill seeing so =
many Soundgarden ones. Jackhammer, I even see TWO different Mr Bungle =
shirts! Wahoo! :-)

Around 4.30 pm now, after British act *Supergrass* have done their =
thing, and Tony is getting ready to see a band he really likes. *Fear =
Factory*. They are full on, and a crowd favourite - people seem to come =
from everywhere to really jam-pack the oval - but not exactly my cup of =
tea. I sit down and rest a while - my feet are aching already - =
preparing myself for Powderfinger coming up, and just listening to FF's =
vocalist do those deep gravelly screams..........

*Powderfinger*, the first band to have an hour time-slot (up until now =
they've all been 45 minute sets) and the first band I'm really anxious =
to see for the day, take up on Stage 1 after Fear Factory wind down. =
The FF crowd now seems *tiny* compared with the huge crowd for =
Powderfinger! I take some photos. This fantastic Brisbane band (where =
our own Blind Dog and several other Sommsters hail from) is really going =
to go places, I'm sure. Bernard Fanning is not only a great lyricist and =
singer, but a cool dancer as well! Their sound is rather muffled for =
this big arena, however - easily the worst quality sound for the day - =
and I thought they were much better when I saw them in Mount Gambier 18 =
months ago in a pub in front of only 100 people. But still, I love =
them, as do the crowd. Most people seem to be settling down somewhat =
during this set, seriously listening to the music and soaking in the =
atmosphere. I really feel "at one" with this crowd. I know there are =
some Powderfinger fans on the list, so here's a quick setlist of what =
they played:
Take Me In
{something I don't know}
Skinny Jean
Living Type
Oipic
(Return of) The Electric Horseman
Tail
Pick You Up (crowd goes crazy for this one)
JC
Boing Boing (excellent sounding, really fast guitar work at the start)
Give
Come Away
{new song?}
DAF

Now we have a chance for a breather. It's 6.15 pm, *You Am I* is =
starting on Stage 2, and we've decided to try and get something to eat =
before The Prodigy starts up on Stage 1. YAI was really good in =
Melbourne supporting Soundgarden on the weekend, but here they seem a =
little out of sorts. I don't think they like playing to a large open =
arena like this, and they come across as rather arrogant and separated =
from us. Still, the songs they play are okay, and we can hear them for =
a lot of their set, as we wander around.

Now about 7 pm and, having eaten, we rejoin the very tightly packed =
crowd on the oval. We have a direct view of Stage 1, where *The =
Prodigy* will soon appear. I am amazed at the number of people there =
are. The whole oval is crammed full of people, and all the grandstands =
around it are full also. It's an incredible feeling to be part of such =
a big crowd. The Prodigy starts and oh boy, they really go off!! (I =
usually hate that trendy phrase, but it is quite appropriate here). The =
crowd erupts in a mass of movement. I can only see parts of the stage - =
we would be about 300 feet from it, about one third of the way towards =
the back. A girl about 3 feet from us is sitting on her boyfriend's =
shoulders. Blair asks if I'd like to do the same. So I do. Now THIS =
is an incredible feeling. I am sitting above a sea of people, out in =
the open air. The sky feels like a closed roof above us, and the people =
are like the floor - there are about 6 or 7 other girls doing the same =
as me, all of them also enthralled in this euphoria. I take some =
photos. Then Blair decides I'm getting too heavy (I don't blame him!) =
and he lets me down. No sooner have we done that when the 40 or 50 =
people around us are shoved as if we were one being. It is quite scary, =
but I force myself to relax, for we can do nothing but let ourselves be =
swept back about 50 feet like a huge tidal wave. Again, I marvel at =
this atmosphere. Even though I'm frightened by the force of being =
pushed back in this human wave, I feel quite safe. Weird, huh? People =
are hot, dirty, tired, and yet pumped and exhilarated and full of energy =
at the same time. The Prodigy seem to have that effect on us. They =
really include the crowd in their act, and are highly entertaining. =
They are so full of energy - and they are so athletic and fit! Their =
music just draws you in. Jackhammer mentioned to me that at the =
Brisbane BDO The Prodigy was not really a band suited to a BDO crowd, =
and other Brisbane Sommsters also have posted that they weren't too =
impressed with them - but that is certainly not at all the case here! =
They are MADE for this - they've come a long way since I saw them here =
on Stage 4 at last year's BDO, yet even then they were brilliant.

Even though I know it means the time for Soundgarden to play is getting =
closer, I feel sorry when The Prodigy end their hour-set at 8.15 pm. =
They are definitely my pick of the bands so far today: even if people =
don't like their music, they would surely appreciate their "oomph". =
Their set ends as the night sky starts to darken - the sun is still up =
but hidden behind the high grandstand to the west of the oval. It's =
been a cool relief not to have that sun pelting down on us any more.

*The Offspring* is up next. I really love this band, but Soundgarden is =
who I am here to see today, so Blair and Tony and I part ways. The guys =
are going over to get as close to Stage 2 as they can, while I decide to =
stay in wait for Soundgarden who will be on Stage 1 when The Offspring =
finishes. My first thought is to try and get up close to the stage, and =
see if it is at all possible for me to get my envelope to a member of =
the band or crew. While The Offspring strut their stuff (they are very =
good - I wish they'd been on earlier so I could throw my soul into =
boogying away to them - no honey-licking scenes here, Blind Dog and =
Little Joe!) I make my way forward..............

I am now at the front of Stage 1, by the gigantic speakers that blare =
forth with great Offspring stuff. They even sing their old song =
'Beheaded' which pleases me. The Soundgarden crew is already starting =
to prepare the equipment for the band. I recognise the older plump man =
who was at the Melbourne concert, who continuously tested the =
microphones. I suspect he's one of the 'head honchos' of the crew. =
Finally I'm at the front but way to the left side of the stage, and =
manage to yell into the ear of a security guy whether it would be =
possible for me to get something backstage. He tells me no, not from =
this side. If I wanted to, I'd have to go all the way over across the =
other side of the oval, past Stage 2, behind the grandstands, and take =
my chances on getting something in that way. I left him, feeling in a =
quandary. Do I waste all my time going over there perhaps for nothing =
and then miss out on getting in a good position for the Soundgarden set? =
Or do I chance it?? Surely I can get my envelope up on stage some =
other way! After probably two Offspring songs of deliberation, I choose =
another security guy who is standing between the stage and the barrier. =
I tell him I have an envelope for one of the members of Soundgarden, and =
will he be so nice as to give it to the crew head honcho. He asks me if =
the band is expecting this. "No", I tell him, "but I promise it won't =
explode, or anything! Just *please*, give it to that guy up on stage - =
he'll know what to do". So the guy shrugs his shoulders, take the =
envelope from me, and walks up to that side of the stage. He gives the =
head honcho the envelope. Phew. That's my first battle won. My heart =
beats faster, wondering what head honcho will do with it. I hold my =
breath. He looks at the envelope, and actually wanders over to the drum =
kit, and leaves it there. Second mission completed! I thank the =
security guy when he returns to his post and tell myself I've done as =
much as I can do - it's now out of my hands. Whether Matt Cameron ever =
saw the envelope or opened it or read its contents I have no idea, and =
probably I'll never know, but at least I tried.

I am totally exhausted by this time - it's about 9 pm, right on =
darkness, 11 hours after we left home this morning. I go back to near =
the left side of the stage - I don't want to be caught below the crowd =
surfers - and find a spot where I have only one person between me and =
the barricade. I sit down, guarding my spot. No way am I going to be =
removed from here! The music from The Offspring is incredibly loud. I =
am less than 6 feet from the speakers, after all. I find a tissue in my =
pocket, rip it and twist a half in each ear, trying to protect my poor =
eardrums. The music is thudding on the floor and I can feel it through =
my backside! I shudder, thinking of the awful headache I know I'll have =
when I get to bed tonight.............

The Offspring finish, with me having been bopping away to them while =
sitting down, despite my exhaustion. I wonder where Blair is. The time =
is nearly here!! I stand up in anticipation of *Soundgarden* =
commencing. Their sound crew is still on stage. After about 15 =
minutes, the stage is in total darkness. I can feel the crowd surging =
forward, but brace myself. The same eerie music is played as at =
Melbourne. Awesome - especially now that I am so close to the stage, =
unlike at Melbourne. My excitement builds - my hands are sweating! And =
then, as they've been doing in all this past tour, the band rushes onto =
the stage and take up their positions for a thundering version of =
SPOONMAN. The girl beside me screams upon seeing Chris Cornell. I =
mentally groan - I'm not keen on being near a love-struck teeny-bopper! =
:-$

I am standing just to the left of Kim, who is at the left of the stage. =
I can see the drum kit, but not Matt at all - he's hidden behind a =
cymbal. (I wonder if my envelope has been trampled to nothingness =
underfoot already.) Chris is in my view, and so is Ben, although he's =
way over the other side of the stage.

Spoonman blends quickly into SEARCHING....... My Somms t-shirt is in my =
bag, but I can't get to it. Otherwise I'd have held up the back of it, =
so at least Kim could see "Posting with my good eye closed". Ah well, =
such is life. DROWN ME is next. Woohoo! Love this song. Ben goes =
*berserk* on the base! Just like in Melbourne, he seems to be enjoying =
himself. It's better standing where I am at this concert (except that I =
can't see Matt's hands) because now I can see the expressions on the =
band members' faces and the way they interact with each other. =20

At the end of Drown Me, CC speaks for the first time - saying something =
about being in Adelaide. An acoustic sounding BURDEN IN MY HAND follows =
- - it really sounds excellent. I realise I have a big grin on my face - =
I feel like I am in heaven. This is a very euphoric feeling - like how =
I imagine being high on dope would be. A short solo song by CC comes =
next - but it's not BHS. I don't know it. The only word I remember in =
it is 'respect'. His voice sounds really bad. Ben walks by himself a =
lot; again I note he seems to be having fun. Kim often gives us funny =
beady-eyed looks and smiles at our side of the stage. We all give him =
the thumbs up and he looks like he thinks life is just grand. After he =
finishes it, CC tells us that song was called COLLEGE, and then goes =
straight into BLACK HOLE SUN. The rest of the stage is in darkness, =
with Kim, Ben & Matt fading from our sight. Chris's voice still sounds =
strained - whereas in Melbourne it was much better. But even though his =
voice sounds worse, it's quite husky and sexy and very emotional, and it =
draws us all in. Even the teeny-bopper next to me shuts up for a while. =
We sway slowly to the song, singing most parts, and again I am swamped =
with a feeling of total contentment...............

To jolt us out of that beautiful atmosphere, at the end of BHS Chris =
screams "Fuck You!" at the top of his voice. "Fuck YOU!" the crowd =
yells back. We think we know what's going to come next, but we're =
wrong. "This is a Fuck You song, and then we're going to follow it with =
another Fuck You song - this is called MY WAVE", CC tells us, as the =
opening bars start. The crowd loves this one.

TY COBB of course comes next. The crowd surfers are really moving now. =
They are passed to the front of the crowd, and the security guys grab =
them over the barricade and point them on their way to the sides of the =
stage to make it back to the crowd and do it all again. I am impressed =
with security here - they look like they're enjoying themselves and for =
the most part are gentle with the surfers. I am being pushed a lot from =
behind and from both sides. My whole body is taut - my calf muscles are =
nearly killing me, I have tensed them so much to hold my ground! I =
recall earlier Somms posts of concerts where Vikki and Andrea and Caryn =
were - discussions of how those girls held their ground and now I know =
exactly what they meant, for that's just how it is here with me: come =
hell or high water I'm staying put! |:-| Kim seems to notice all the =
pushing and shoving on our side and gives us another of his winning =
smiles. It's like he's giving us a salute for not giving in. I decide =
I like this man a lot. He's ever so cool, controlled, placid, and yet =
amusing and funny at the same time.

OUTSHINED bursts forth after Ty Cobb. I love it. Kim laughs at us, =
moves over to Chris and talks to him. Both look as if they really like =
doing this concert. Then my favourite, RUSTY CAGE, is on!!!! *Please* =
don't let this end for a while! I shut my eyes for the briefest moment =
to let the sound enter my body. Wow, this is a great feeling. To hear =
my favourite Soundgarden song being played by Soundgarden themselves, =
only a few feet in front of me outdoors on a beautiful warm balmy =
evening......................pure magic! My eyes reopened, I see Ben =
shaking his head from side to side really fast - hell he looks just like =
Lyal Lovett!! :-)Kim plays his guitar in all possible positions, and =
then I notice something fly up onto the stage near Ben. He picks it up =
and throws it back. Chris goes almost Ben-like then, the singing of =
Rusty Cage over but the music still going on - he bends his microphone =
in half - I am amazed at his strength. This is like seeing an orgasm in =
motion, you know - everything is building up to a big crescendo and it's =
almost as if something should explode. Then comes a hell of a lot of =
feedback for Rusty Cage's ending.=20

That over, Chris screams "DON'T YOU FUCKING THROW STUFF AT - - - MY - - =
- - FRIEND - - - BEN!" (the last three words are shouted out very slowly =
and forcefully). I've never seen him react like that before (says me, =
who's only seen him twice now - but you know what I mean!).

With a calming effect, BLOW UP THE OUTSIDE WORLD comes next. It really =
does seem to calm Chris down. He sings this in a deep 'yeeeehah, =
ride-'em-cowboy' type voice. I like it. This is followed by SEARCH AND =
DESTROY. I can see all the other people around me wondering what the =
heck this song is, and I feel like I am sharing a secret with the band =
because I know it. I feel close to this band now. SLAVES AND =
BULLDOZERS starts. Chris comes over to us and the teeny-bopper waves =
her arms and gives another of her annoying wails. It's the first time =
he's come to our side of the stage so it IS a thrill, I'll grant her =
that - I take some photos of him. Ben is really getting into S&B - the =
thing thrown on stage forgotten, he is back to his full-on, =
let's-have-a-ball self. Chris hugs the microphone - sort of folds his =
arms around it - as he sings. He doesn't play guitar at all during this =
song - just lets it fall loose at his hips - so his whole heart seems to =
go into singing. During Kim's guitar solo, CC swings his guitar around =
his head. This is an excellent part by Kim - he's standing centre stage =
now, while CC disappears off-stage (to have a smoke?). The security =
guard in front of us is really dancing to this song - I bet he wishes he =
could have this sort of band to work with all the time. I smile at him =
for he's oblivious to us, and to the surfers he's supposed to help =
control. Kim plays his guitar with his mouth - and I start to laugh.

But then, what Ben does next wipes the smile right off my face. =20

I've been watching Kim and haven't noticed what's been going on over =
Ben's side of the stage. He is mighty pissed off with the crowd - he's =
throwing things in a rage. I begin to feel worried. He stops while CC =
sings my favourite part, the low "Everything I've held.....". It's the =
BEST I've ever heard it. Then Ben comes over our side for the first =
time and goes *totally* ballistic. He kicks a light so that it flies =
off the stage towards our direction. I am really scared now. The very =
heavy light hits the poor dancing security guy near his head - it could =
have killed him, but he is okay. Everyone around me is shocked, and to =
see the look on the security guy's face nearly made me want to cry. He =
did nothing to Ben (just as Caryn did nothing the night he kicked her in =
the head) - why did Ben have to be so vicious like that? He goes back =
to his own side of the stage and kicks over his own microphone, with a =
furious look still upon his face. He spits streams of water everywhere. =
This is disgusting me. Kim doesn't look too amused either as he =
finishes the song, yet Chris just ignores him. Matt's sticks appear =
high in the air - he's throwing them into the crowd. Chris dumps his =
guitar on the ground and all four of them leave the stage. =20

The lights go out. =20

I am sure there'll be no encore now :-(, and I feel angry at the crowd =
for pissing off Ben and even more at Ben for ruining what was a great =
evening. I look around me - most people are screaming for them to come =
back but those near me are still in shock at what they just witnessed. =
Of course I want them to come back too - I want to hear JCP which has =
been their encore at all their tours. I remember there was no encore at =
one of the concerts a Sommster did a review on, so think maybe we're =
going to miss out too. Bummer. :-(

But WAIT! =20

Matt has come back on! He sits at his drum kit - there's still no sign =
of anyone else. I think maybe he's being his usual "nice" self and =
decided to give us an encore by himself to make up for Ben's behaviour. =
He starts his own solo under a single spotlight. He is SOOOOO fast, and =
before I know it, it becomes the intro to JESUS CHRIST POSE!! All of a =
sudden all of them are back on - Chris Cornell's shirt is off, which of =
course sets off the screaming thing next to me again. [sigh]

"Jesus Christ - Christmas Day......." Chris ad-libs a lot in this =
version - it's a pretty amazing rendition, and I suspect the band is =
really revved up to play so hard because of what happened before they =
left the stage. Maybe we should thank Ben after all? It seemed to =
bring on some fierce playing by all those in the band. Chris stands in =
the pose for much of this song, which makes my friend scream and swoon =
all the more. Again, I take photos, but I'm sure they're going to make =
him look like a little ant in the centre - I don't have a zoom lens.

As the song draws to an end, CC breaks his guitar strings. He throws =
his fist in the air to say goodbye as he leaves the stage. The feedback =
continues and the band has gone. I don't notice Ben leave, but I do see =
Matt, and as he walks away I wonder if he did in fact see my envelope =
with his name on it.

Kim comes back on stage after it is over, to our side only, with a Crown =
Lager beer in his hand. He raises it to us and flashes us another great =
grin. The guitar feedback is still going on.

Then it's over. =20

I feel on a high, having gone through so many emotions in the last hour =
and a half. I stand there with what must be a dopey, dazed look on my =
face. I THINK I'm grinning - I'm not even sure of that! :-) The set =
went over their 10.20 pm finishing time - they walked off the stage for =
the second time at about 10.35 pm.

I shake myself out of my trance and make quick headway for the last act =
of the evening, the *Beasts Of Bourbon*. I know Blair will be there =
somewhere - he does so love this old band. Maybe even Kim will be too? =
He mentioned this band on Radio JJJ during this last week. I pick my =
way over the millions of empty plastic water bottles that litter the =
oval, and head for Stage 3, where that unique deep voice of Tex Perkins =
is booming from. I move as fast as I can - not only do I want to see as =
much of the Beasts as I can, but I also want Blair to know how brilliant =
Soundgarden was.

I weave my way right to the front of this stage. Standing not two feet =
away from me is Blair. We smile, I mouth to him how much I loved =
Soundgarden, and then we turn to enjoy the rest of this set. I take =
several photos. Tex Perkins has so much stage presence! I even dare to =
say he has more than Chris Cornell. {shame on me, huh?!} :-P I am =
actually taken aback at the way Tex seems to be affecting me here. =
Maybe it's because I'm still floating after Soundgarden's performance, =
but right now I feel like I am witnessing something incredibly special =
here. I think of Shroom, who has posted her feelings on the way Chris =
Cornell seems to personify sex. Shroom, I wish you could see Tex =
Perkins up here now. His very pores are screaming masculinity. He's =
not a particularly attractive man, but very powerful. He screams into =
the microphone in the deepest voice in the world, and moves around on =
stage almost like a man possessed. This is the perfect way to end what =
has been a perfect day - not many other bands could have followed =
Soundgarden and not been anti-climactic. The Beasts really did justice =
to Soundgarden's show.

At almost 11.30 pm, the final Big Day Out draws to a close in this city. =
:-( Blair and I finally find Tony and we walk back to the car with our =
ears ringing, our heads thumping, our feet aching............but happy. =
It really HAS been a big day out, and one I'll remember for years to =
come.
________________________________________________________________
AFTER THOUGHTS:
1. My photos turned out reasonably, although those in it ARE small, as =
I thought. A few of CC in his Jesus Christ pose would look good if I =
could crop them and enlarge them.

2. Seth - is it at all possible for the next time you (or ANY Sommster, =
for that matter) happen to communicate with Matt Cameron, to ask him if =
indeed he ever received my envelope? That's something I will always =
wonder about, even though I suspect it was trampled underfoot.

3. To those I owe millions and zillions of emails to - please bear with =
me! That includes you, Greg Dunbar - yes I've seen Tony Bourke!!

3. If you're still awake and reading down this far, thanks! :-)

Subject: Boots/Temple stuff

Hi guys,
This bootleg controversey thing. I was thinking about what Bono from U2
said. For those who are non-U2 fans, a 3 CD bootleg of the "Achtung Baby"
sessions called "Salome" has been widely circulated/sold. Bono and crew
freaked out and widely condemned the whole deal. When pressed for details as
to why they didn't like bootlegging, Bono said it wasn't the money factor,
but that he didn't want crappy U2 material being circulated. Basically, he
said that if good material had been bootlegged, he would have been cool with
it, but he doesn't want "inferior" songs out there. In any case, Bono went
and bought it anyway, just to have it, he said.
Sooo..my question is: do you think the guys in SG are this way? If Matt is
cool with buying his own bootlegs, do you think he'd mind fans buying them?
Which leads to this whole fan vs. non-fan thing. I think that pretty much,
only "fans" of the band would bother buying CD bootlegs, because they wanna
supplement the studio releases. I mean, these things are pretty pricey. If
there ARE people out there buying boots just to have them / make a profit,
and NOT cuz they're fans, (and I'm sure there are), then I can only say that
these people are suckers of testicle sweat. In my experience, however, only
pretty hardcore fans would bother looking for and shelling out the dough for
CD bootlegs.
In any case, I think it's important for people on both sides of this debate
to realize that:
1) For the most part, only fans of the band buy CD boots,
and even so,
2) SG, if not losing money, will at least not make any money on these babys.
Sooo...I guess it's a personal choice. An important point is: do the guys in
SG even care about 2) ? Are they just happy being able to put music out,
period? I dunno...

And this Temple thing...I highly doubt (whoever said it) that Temple had
Eddie on it cuz he knew Andy OR to push the new PJ record. I read an
interview with Eddie where he just gushes about how excited he was to work
with Chris and Matt, cuz a few weeks prior, he had been just another kid in
the pit at a SG show, and now here he was recording with these guys. I think
the songs/ideas were pretty much in place before Eddie showed up, like Caryn
said. It just happened that he was about to be in Mookie Blaylock, and those
guys were gonna record a record with Chris & Matt, and, you know the rest...
There was a big marketing push for Temple AFTER PJ and SG took off, though.
I remember that the original release for Temple was white, while the
rerelease/extra printings are yellow.

While we're in the Temple category, does anyone have any Temple shows on
tape? I will do ANYTHING for them!!

Thanks,
Dun

Hey List !

First up...buy the new Helmet album...buy the new Helmet album :-) If you
don't, Page Hamilton will come over to your house and kick your ass :-) Yes
he will...didn't you know your email address automatically sends your house
address? Don't you have that button on your Hotmail/Juno account? It's the
same logic as Stop signs with the white outside borders are optional...you
did know that? Check your driver's manual.

It's a crime they are on the road supporting um, Korn! right
now...anyway...It's called _Aftertaste_ and it's pretty cool :-) Make sure
you check them out on this summer's Warped Tour :-) Woo Hoo!...it's got a
Buffalo stop :-)

To add some SG stuff to this post...doesn't the guitar riff on "In the
Meantime" sound a little bit too much like "Flower"...Hmmmmm :-)

Second, since the tree thing isn't happening...which is pretty pathetic.
I'll get it started..BUT I won't finish it. More below.

Ok...here's what's happening...I will trunk one video from my collection. I
could care less what it is...first person that gives me an actual show is
the one who picks it out.

This is very *important*...after 5pm EST today. I can *only* be reached at
V072PW5C@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu IF you send email to my acsu.buffalo.edu
address after 5pm EST today...I will not see it until SUNDAY. When in
doubt.. send it to the ubvms address. Seems the funny unix people are
rebuilding the entire directory structure..whatever the hell that means.

Directions:

IF YOU HAVE TWO VCR's AND CAN MAKE DUBS...

1. email me with the SUBJECT: BRANCH that's all i need right now.

IF YOU CAN NOT MAKE DUBS...but are still interested

1. email me with the SUBJECT: LEAF that's all i need right now

I also want to train someone else to do this. If you are a BRANCH indicate
in your email that you are willing to get off your ass and learn a trade ;-)
Or maybe you just want to be able to do this again :-) I will document this
whole thing.... and Jason if you're listening..it will go on YOUR web page.

If you're unsure which show is getting tree'd cuz maybe you have it...say
something now! Cuz i don't want to hear you whine later. Again, you know
who you are ;-)

Regarding bootlegs, I thought Chris mentioned something about them during the
AOL/MTV chat in November 1995. I found it:

Question : I have 48 Soundgarden cd's... how do you feel about
             unauthorized releases? tina
S0UNDGRDNx : They're all right with me.

That is his only comment about it during the MTV chat.

This comment made me laugh. I helped a friend supervise a birthday party for
10 eight-year-old girls last weekend. One girl was singing a song by No
Doubt and another girl said, "hey, do you know that song Black *Old* Sun?"
Then she started to sing it. I wasn't annoyed--I thought it was funny, but
I did correct her ;-)

Prodigy Delays Tour, May Get Help From Soundgarden
                          Drummer

March 20 [7:55 EST] -- If you were hoping to catch The
Prodigy live while "Firestarter" is still fresh in your head, you'll
have to wait a bit longer.

The band has just pushed back its U.S. tour, originally slated to
kick off on April 14 in Chicago, and says it will now wait until at
least June before it comes to the States. The band says it want to
complete its upcoming Maverick Records debut before touring.

When the album, titled "Fat of the Land,"
hits stores, it may feature the work of
     Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron. Our
colleagues at MTV Europe report that
Cameron may turn up in sampled form on
the album, noting that Soundgarden and
Prodigy headlined a recent Australian tour together, during which
the English band apparently formed a sort of Matt Cameron fan
     club.

The Prodigy is not talking about this report.

Hello all---

I was just channel surfing and came across a picture of Matt on
MTV(news). I just caught the end of the report, and said that Prodigy became
big Matt Cameron fans after touring with the band on the BDO tour. I was
just wondering if Matt agreed to play with them, or if they are going to
record something together? Sounds better than the Snoop Dogg and Marilyn
Manson collaboration.

originally put him in...why they put him in...we'll never know...we can only
speculate taht not being blind/def they saw he had talent and would probably
add to the project....hence his involvement...as for his attitude...i

I didnt know that ol' ed ved was not a seattle-ite tho, so I found that
interesting. You guys are so smart about this stuff ;). I did know a couple
are from my state Montana tho. So maybe none of them were Seattle-ites
really. Who cares its PJ. Maybe Chris is the only true Seattle-ite, Ben is
a Bainbridge-ite or -ian, Kim is a Chicago-ian, Matt, I dunno.

Someone please answer regarding the bootleg thing.

Thanks

Carol

Subject: Temple of The Dog

I noticed much reference to the Temple of The Dog album and thought that I
would share some input pertaining to that subject. I purchased my copy
when it first came out in the fall of 91. Pearl Jam was barely a band at
the time no doubt. I remember interviews with Chris Cornell during the
early part of 91 where he would always mention a favorite band of his by
the name of "Pearl Jam". Needless to say, at the time of the Temple album
came out it was not called the "Pearl Jam", "Soundgarden" album. The
record flopped big time and future copies of the album were no longer run
by the record company. The release of "Jeremy" and Pearl Jam's popularity
resulted in the "Re-Issue" of the Temple album in the spring of 92. This
is when it was coined the "Pearl Jam, Soundgarden" album, an obviously
greedy move on the part of the record company. The slick marketing paid
off for everyone. The album shot up the charts and the "Hunger Strike"
video was Re- released in a different version than the original one in 91.
The version from 91 is much better as far as I am concerned. I kinda wish
the Temple album remained an "underground" kind of an album. Everyone has
that band or album in their collection that is not well known but rocks
like a mother fucker, the Temple album was just that for me.
Speaking of the band. did anybody out there happen to know if anyone
taped the surprise Temple of The Dog spot on the second stage of
Lollapalooza II @ Alpine Valley WI Aug. 92? They came on right after the
Jim Rose Circus. I remember walking away from the side show when I started
hearing the band playing. Luckily I made it back in time to catch a super
short gig.
I also have Soundgarden to trade. I am really only looking for people who
tape their own shows. Thanks for letting me share my Temple story.
Peace, Paul

Prodigy Delays Tour, May Get Help From Soundgarden
                          Drummer

March 20 [7:55 EST] -- If you were hoping to catch The
Prodigy live while "Firestarter" is still fresh in your head, =
you'll
have to wait a bit longer.

Hello!
I am new to the list, though I must confess that I have been reading the
digest from Seth's page for several months now, wishing that I could
comment, and I have communicated with a few of you recently regarding
tape trading. I finally convinced my husband to let me further "clutter
up" his account. So, here I am!

Thug, I want details on this Ben/Devilhead thing. Has he recorded
anything with them, etc.?

And, if Chris is chocolate chips then Ben must be nuts!

Subject: Chris sang PJ's Alive

Anyone out there got a copy of Omega Paradise (Live in US '93)? If so you
probably know this but I'll say this anyway. I once knew someone who had
the original copy, it had a weird cover, like a scene form hell or
something. That's not the important thing, one track 7 they play room a
thousand years wide (although one the cover track 7 is called something
else, I can't remember what it was) and suddenly in the middle of the song
everything slows down and Chris starts singing PJ's Alive. It's so cool
also it has different lyrics. The cool thing is that the band is playing
room a thou... and Chris is singing Alive. There are some other song on
the bootleg like a version of Little Joe much better than the original
version, and a song called Big Bottom. I anyone is interested in hearing
the part that Chris sings send messages or e-mail me. Because I'm not in
US I'll probably have to digitize it and send it to Seth (if he wants it).
Anyway people, SEEYA.

Alright, it's my first day and already this is my second post, but I
wanted to alert you all to something that might save you some grief. I
was playing some videotapes today that I hadn't had out in a while and
noticed that there was damage to the soundtracks. Cyclical damage. I
could predict when the next brief damaged section would appear.
Suddenly it occured to me that the stupid video cabinet (and yes, it was
sold as a VIDEO cabinet) had a magnet in the door mechanism! I mean,
DUH! Needless to say, I promptly removed it. So, check any cabinets
that you're storing video or audio tape in. I don't know for certain
that this caused the damage, but I strongly suspect it.

I guess I can't really say that this annoys me because I probably just don't
notice it.
But I must say that no one should be disscouraged from quoting
lyrics(I'm not saying that you are Karen just in general). This post just
brought to my notice how much I really love to read a post or even on the
webpage to just see the lyric of the month brings back the memory of that
song if you haven't heard it for a while or else puts that song in your head
for the rest of the day which is always a good thing considering it's
Soundgarden. As well it can some time stump you as to what song it is and
then your forced to go and find it.

I think i have waffled enough on this subject.

Bronwyn.

Well this is my lyric for the moment simply for it's simplicity and
quoteablity in conversation.

To all out there in Sommsland,
If you want to get Down under on the upside (in OZ or the world) you better
do it soon because there seem to be fewer and fewer about and acutally they
are cheaper than the normal album at the moment ($2). I went and bought it
last week so now my brother is getting Down on the upside for christmas.
well that's all once again.
