Subject: The annual post from The Guitarist...

A couple things:

1 - I noticed my name on the list of SOMMS owners? Hey, 'twould be cool, but
unfortunately not yet . . . working on it though . . . ;-)

2 - My birthday was last Monday (the 10th) and among the joyous gifts I
received was ... Soundgarden-Riff by Riff! ah, what great joy to now whip
out riffs from the solo on Big Dumb Sex to the mandolin on Ty Cobb! (now I
must get a mandolin! be ready to hear from The Mandolinist-2001! ;-)

3 - Regarding that obnoxious post about Eddie V. being unrelated to T.O.D.,
why is it that every time some strange person from nowhere has something
incredibly stupid to say, they feel they need to use caps? It seems now that
whenever there's a message completely in caps lock you're almost always
guaranteed some insane ramblings of stupidity (which will always lead to
collective flames from the list, which just adds to the traffic on this list
and supports why I now get the digest)

4 - Regarding the debate about the morality of bootleggs versus authorized
releases . . . boy, now I feel really bad about getting From the Mouth of
Decadence... I'd finally convinced myself that it was alright and that I
wasn't going to jail, and now Seth says that if you have an unauthorized
release without having each song also on an authorized release, you're going
to hell! Sure, I know I'm going to hell anyway, but this sure doesn't help
plead my case...

that's all for now... I think...

Okay, so I'm getting a little off track here, seeing as I can't give you a
direct response exclusively for Soundgarden. General principles used by
bands (and this applies for guitar and vocals) is that there is usually only
one or two outstanding parts to be played or sung from any given studio
song. Prime examples are:

* Black Hole Sun - played live by Chris Cornell alone with acoustic guitar.
For example, the introduction played contained the more important of the two
guitar parts - one guitar track from the album version (noted in official
transcription for the song as having a high frequency "Leslie" or rotating
speaker effect over it) was completely omitted. This left no major gaping
hole in the song. Added to that, Chris Cornell singing solo also meant that
the final chorus, where on the album version there is "screaming" going on
the background, this "screaming" was omitted. No major effect to the overall
consistency of the song - it's still very much (unmistakably?) Black Hole Sun.

* As I previously mentioned, Alice In Chains records three guitar tracks
(well, Jerry Cantrell does, to be more specific) - obviously for their
unplugged edition, where Jerry was joined by another guitarist (sorry, name
forgotten), one guitar track has to go. This is no problem - the
arrangements for either guitar are made as such that the "important" guitar
information remains. [Also note that Alice In Chains often records three
vocal tracks - with only Jerry Cantrell and Layne Stayley singing, one of
these lines has to go!]

Most guitar transcriptions in magazines and a lot of official guitar tab
books identify this concept and will transcribe songs for only one or two
guitars.

However, it is equally important in these transcriptions that the major
riffs, hooks, vocal lines and chords are included. A different chord will
immediately be noticed, as will variations in riffs - it's better to
completely omit a riff than to half do the job...

To facilitate accurate playing of songs, it's important to ensure correct
guitar tunings of songs. Black Hole Sun NOT tuned to dropped D would be very
different...

In summary, to my knowledge, Soundgarden uses this "play the important
stuff" principle - at least, they did when I saw them!

>DOTU..would u ppl have that trademark"wall-of-sound" or the more
>stripped own SG?

I personally don't consider the two to be far from each other - in either
case, you still have a limited number of important musical features that you
notice in a song...extra tracks don't affect that; and anyhow - "mistakes"
made become part of the song. Only the guitarist him/herself really knows
the truth...

That said, give me the stripped down version.

Why was I singled out? I have never even posted as to my position on this
subject. Chris I am hurt.

First of all I own EVERY single bit of Soundgarden I have been able to get my
hands on. I have even doubled up on a lot of stuff just to collect it. (i.e.
singles that I have 3 or 4 of, various vinyl colors, albums on CD AND
cassette etc). I have a few bootlegs, Stolen Prayers, Fresh Deadly Rarities,
and 3 live boots, but that's it. My Tape compilations I did was not to
circumvent the band or steal any profits from them, I was just trying to get
people exposed to as much stuff as I could because some of this stuff is
harder than Hell to find.

PLUS, I lost money on the whole thing.

So why was I mentioned in this post?

To the person talking about singing limo wreck, why would you want to keep
your voice clear? Throw in some raspy distortion (have plenty of sunny D

with the distortion, you don't have to hit all the notes perfectly, as

Subject: Tape Trees Explained

Hey List

99% of you have no idea what a tree is..so hopefully this will explain it.
I doubt it will sink into all...but some of you may get the gist...even the
rude people (you know who you are *sigh*).

steve
- --------------------------------------------------------------

>>The following is taken from the FAQ section of the Verve homepage and
slightly modified :)<<

What is a "tree"?

A tree is basically a hierarchal distribution list for the purpose of
getting rare/live material in the hands of the mailing list at a low cost to
everyone. How does it work?

one person volunteers a tape to tree, this person is the "trunk" of the tree.

that person asks for individuals interested in serving as "branches" to the
tree. these branches will dub copies of the tape for the "leaves". So here
is a graphical representation of the tree:

a) douglas has a tape that is mega cool and he wants to share with the
group. let's say it is Soundgarden's 11/13/96 Toronto, Ontario

b) he offers the tape to "tree". if he just wants to share, but not do any
of the legwork, he posts a message saying "i've got a cool tape to tree, who
wants to take over?" otherwise he does it himself.

c) someone volunteers to handle the details of the tree. douglas mails the
tape to be treed to the someone. let's call him richard. (note: yeah call
him dick :-)

d) richard posts to the group asking for volunteers to serve as "branches"
for the tree. These volunteers will have to make copies for others, so the
branches should have a pretty good quality dubbing deck, or similar
capabilities.

e) richard receives emails from the volunteers who will dub (remember these
people are called "branches"), and keeps them on file.

f) once he has at least a few volunteers, he then asks for "leaves". these
are people who just basically want copies of the tape, but either don't have
the desire or capability to make copies for others. which is ok.

g) richard then notes the number of emails that are leaves, vs. the number
of leaves.

h) richard organizes them into groups. to keep any one individual from
having to do a whole lot of dubbing, he tries to limit the number of leaves
on a branch to around 5-7 people. the number of branches is dependent on the
demand for the tape. a key idea is to not have one person have to make 25
tapes. let's distribute the workload amongst the group.

i) richard emails the branches and asks for their addresses and some $$. the
amount of $$ should be cost. this is not a profit-making enterprise. i
expect a chrome cassette, packing and postage to be $5-$7, dependent on
airmail etc. however, the $$ amount should be agreed upon by the group, not
set by an individual.

j) as the cash rolls in, richard makes copies of douglas's tape and mails
them to the "branches", along with the names and addresses of the "leaves"
that have been assigned to that person/"branch".

k) as each branch receives his/her tape, s/he emails his/her assigned leaves
and asks for $$ and a mailing address. she makes copies for his/her assigned
leaves and mails them out.

l) the leaves get their tapes and everyone rocks out. What happens if i
don't get my tape?

The "trunk" can trace back who your "branch" was, and you should know
anyway. the tree runs on trust and love. if you are ripped off, the group
will shun the ripper. hopefully though, since the cost is low, the pain
won't be too great.

I know this is off the subject aweebit. Last year when SG was in North
Carolina,( I believe it was NC, I'm old so bear with me) Kim got into
some trouble with a girl that was part of a wedding party. I know at the
time that it happended they or Kurt Loder to be more specific, said that
he was being charged with assault from some girl who said that he pushed
her. I believe it was in reference to her asking him for an autograph or
a picture and he wasnt in the mood (he is only human) and she pushed
him and he pushed her back (something to that extent) and I was just
wondering if anyone on the list knows what the final outcome of that
situation was.

Did he go to court? Where the charges dropped? Was he ever even charged?
I never heard anything else about it, and I was wondering if anyone else
may know what happened.

Thats all....

yeah, i *knew* that. i was just wondering if the specific line about
the "stargazer" was a direct mention of andy's song. i found out from
a few SOMMSters that the song andy wrote called "stargzaer" was about
his girlfriend, and so i've kinda come to the conclusion (with, again,
SOMMSters help) that the whole "stargazer" line is about her. "times
of trouble" is a very good song, one of the better ones on the album,
in my opinion.

About Jason's SG bootleg site: Only three people were on that list, last

Does anyone have any info on the upcoming Hater CD? And Seth, how did you

That's all I got. Responses would be appreciated. Weird concept I know.

I have to add my 2 cents to this thread before it dies. Trung, if you want
to go buy bootlegs, that is fine with me. You are a fan of the band, you
*wanted* the songs, so you did what you had to do. There are some moral
questions of course, but the world won't end if you buy FDR or whatever boot
you choose. Obviously, a lot of folks on here don't feel the same way.
But hey..to each his or her own. About the being a true fan or what not..
you made a good point. I have FDR. I would hate for someone to accuse me
of being, as you put it, an "untrue" fan because that would simply be
ignorant. Anyway, keep speaking your semi-controversial views man..it makes

I agree 100% that we CAN learn from someone else's viewpoint, but...if
someone else tries to MAKE their own viewpoint by trashing another's, it
is pointless. Opinions (or facts) are only as good as the information
or logic that they are backed up by. You don't dislike something just
because. There is almost always a reason for like, dislike, hate or
love. If you are going to state your opinion, GREAT! But try to
explain to someone who doesn't agree with you why you feel that way.

explanation.

I agree Deb. But as I've said before, there may be freedom of speech,
but there is also something called common courtesy. Respect others'
opinions, and you will receive respect for yours in return.

Yes, Caryn, it seems that when SG are being reclusive, the wolves of
SOMMS come out of the cave and go at each other's throats. I thought
that this list was to discuss our LOVE of Soundgarden, not our disgust
for each other??? Am I wrong???

Interesting. Here's my take. Chris Cornell = Chocolate Chips
					Kim Thayil =	Sugar
					Matt Cameron =	Milk
					Ben Shepard =	Flour

Mix them together, and you get wonderfully tasty cookies.

Keep them apart, and they are all still tasty (well, maybe except for
the flour, but it's BEN for Christ's sake!")

AND! They can each be used in other recipes with other ingredients to
make equally delicious foods! (God, I'm hungry)

On a salient March day, Caryn wrote:

> i wonder what chris *feels* when he performs it?

I too wonder what Chris feels. I read somewhere that he often feels
like he is the best singer/performer in the world...but just as often
feels that he is a worthless piece of shit. I would imagine that he
feels the connection to a personal song just like we do when we smell a
familiar old smell (baking cookies or a roasting turkey) or if we hear a
song that we identify with a particular moment in time.

btw...does Chris decide what to play for a setlist, or does the whole
band decide? Also, why do they play a nearly identical set night to
night on tour? I can understand the new material would remain constant,
but what about old stuff?
