This is a really interesting comparishion. Cantrell and Cornell are in a
way very alike as songwriters, they both have the talent necessary to
write stuff that when you figure it out you think "why didn't I think of
that?". You can also often tell if a song was written by either one of
these two.
Enough of this idolization, I'm sure these guys have employes

The one i was most saddened not to head was Head Down.,..
(even though another crazed and awed fan next to me at the front shouted
out between encore songs "Head Down, Ben! Head Down!")

I have now accepted that i may never get to see them play this song live

Does Chris his part with an acoustic on stage?

Subject: SG survival kit

Hey people, guess what I found yesterday? A DOTU survival kit! I had no idea
these things existed, but it's pretty cool. According to the label, it's UK
promo only, and quite rare. It contains loads of stuff, which I'll list
(yes, I took notes... HMV probably thought I was a nutcase):

9-trk video compilation,
Ident Club Greeting video,
frisbee,
ear-plugs,
compass,
water pistol,
hacky sack,
hooded rain-coat poncho,
bottle of water and first aid kit

and all of this comes in a green backpack. Now, what caught my eye (apart
from the water pistol - what's it doing in a survival kit?) was of course
the video. There's a video compilation out there! Hopefully this one will be
released on it's own, 'cos the entire kit costs around $230, and as much as
I love SG, I'm not going to pay that much for two videos and a bunch of
earplugs and frisbees.

I'm probably opening myself up to lectures and flames but this is a place to
post opinions, etc., so I wanted to add my 2 cents to this discussion.

In the first place, it's PJ and their management who imposed this media ban
back when Vs was in the works. NO interviews, NO photos, NO anything new to
go to the press and therefore to the fans. (In fact, I could tell you quite
the story about what Curtis Management did to a fellow zine editor who
merely asked for a photo pass, and this is someone who gets passes from
others regularly.) We all saw the effects of it if we looked--and I once did
b/c I used to be a huge PJ fan--w/ the music mags re-running old photos and
articles, just so they could proclaim PJ was in their mag so they'd sell it
to the desperate PJ fans. Weird thing was, despite this ban, you still saw
them in certain publications like Musician and others. The whole thing
seemed so hypocritical and 2-faced. So a publication w/ a world-wide rep,
aka RS, asks for an interview and gets turned down. They start poking
around and they find out some unflattering stuff about EV, which, sorry, I
do happen to believe b/c I do know a few people in Seattle. It gets
published and the PJ/EV idolizers take offense b/c, after all it's "cutting
up" their hero. Hey, what if their hero, Mr. Vedder, isn't the nice guy
they all think he is? Is anyone we admire really the way we think they are?
So I can't blast RS for that article, from MY own perspective, which I've
formed based on what I know. As for CC speaking out or defending
EV....well, if he considers himself to be EV's friend (is he sure EV
considers him a friend?) then this certainly shows CC is loyal to his
friends, and that does have to be admired.

MY 2 cents worth, understand, tho I think this whole thing could lead to
some good converstaions on the list! This is so much better than flaming
bands others on the list like or taking stabs at people!

must now comment even though most of the somms content is of things that
had been already examined and re-examined. I am just glad the whole
Billy/Chris thing has finally begun to die out. I hate it when all you
fight over something so trivial. Because no matter how much you say
something or someone else tells you something else, if you believe
yourself to be right, it won't change a thing. But anyways..If I had
Chris's number I wouldn't call. Or if I did I would probley do what
someone else mentioned and ask for someone else. Anything for the
chance to talk to Mr. Cornell because at the rate I'm going I won't ever
get the chance to meet or even see him in concert:( Life is so unfair.

In my boyfriends French class they sang Black Hole Sun(in French) I
found that quite humerous. Soundgarden in the class room. Whats going
to be next? I tried to get him to sing it for me but he wouldn't do it.

Someone mentioned they were looking for a copy of GoldMine? I get mine

Why do I feel like nearly every mail I receive is just reminding me of why
I left?

> there is no one who can compare to the man in question.

He's a muscian, a songwriter, a lyricist, but not a god. There are
millions of muscians, songwriters and lyrcists in the world who you will
never see or hear. I once saw an alcoholic playing for money in a high
street - have you ever heard him? Or the man playing blues in the middle
of a crowded shopping centre. Or the young girl with her violin in a small
town side-street. I doubt it, because without these experiences music will
never mean anything to you.

> Chris vs Thayil-any takers on this war.

No, because it's pointless.

> I have no idea what Chris is driving now but a little bird told me that
way back when he was really big in saving the planet (just look at the song
Hands All > Over) so he didn't drive anything but rode around on a bike.

Kelly, do you honestly care what car he drives? What happened to people
talking about why they are here, why they like Soundgarden I feel like I'm
reading a pile of teen-angst, that nobody really knows what to talk about
and instead they're just passing time. I thought that just maybe we could
talk about music, talk about one of the most beautiful things in the world,
but no. It really is a shame because there is enough people here with
enough experiences and opinions to raise the conversation to a standard so
much higher than this.

> We're actually lucky to still have our bands... It's a pop scene that
likes to crucify and immortalize it's hero's... Elvis Presley, John
Lennon, Jim Morrisson,
> Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Shannon Hoon, Andrew Wood, James Dean, River
Phoenix, Marilyn Monroe, the list goes on... and it *will* go on...

Taylor, most of these people crucified themselves. They're the gods that
we're supposed to look up to. They're the gods that feed on addiction,
only to die like all the others junkies that nobody really cared about
anyway. And who put them there, who made them "immortal"? Who found
acceptance in what they did? The pop scene doesn't come into it, is's just
human, like every person you named above.

The story below was told to me at four in the morning in some Spanish bar
drinking watered-down beer. It has absolutely fuck-all to do with
Soundgarden, so if that means anything then I suggest you stop reading now.
Whether it's true or not I don't know, but the point doesn't change:

A man walked into a cafe, and having ordered a coffee from the young
lady at the counter, walked slowly towards the far corner of the room to a
small table positioned there. A second man, though somewhat hidden within
the shade, raised his head to see the stranger. With such eagerness, the
man shouted across the room, and throwing himself through several tables
and chairs, eventually came to rest in the chair opposite him.
"You're a muscian aren't you? No you are, I'm absolutely sure." The
stranger said nothing and with a smile pointed towards the leather guitar
case leaning against the wall next to him. The man, almost hysterical at
this, grasped the nearby napkin and demanded an autograph.
Taking the napkin, the stranger took a pen from his inside pocket and
began to scrawl across the pattern. When he had finished the man took the
napkin back and began to read the stranger's words.
"You know who I am?" The startled look of the man seemed highly
amusing to the stranger.
"Of course I do, everybody does. You're Robert Plant."

Cheers,
Stacy.

Subject: Sermon on Pop Music

        Hey

You know, I think the Seattle scene has been over in the eye of pop media
for two years already. Dubbed, sampled R&B with computer repaired vocals
and an endless stream of love song lyrics has been biding its time;
gradually filling the band widths until, SURPRISE, we can't get away from
it. Not to mention the worthless 4-measure drum loops that people call
dance music. But the thing is that its just part of a cycle that is picking
up where it left off in 1989. One of these days something new and
worthwhile will show up, and that will be the trend for a few years. And it
will all happen a bazillion times. This "Pop Media" we bitch about is being
dictated by the same fifth graders that had to re-do their wardrobe when the
look of cool changed abruptly from Nirvana to 311.
(I have a lot of respect for both of those bands, just for the record.) Just
go to your local record store for about half an hour and watch who is buying
records, and you'll see this to be true.

Anyway, we are stuck with it, but it's not as though this means Soundgarden
or anyone else is being laid off or anything. There is a new album in the
works; Screaming Trees last one was terrific, and the same goes for the
Meat Puppets and a lot of others. All of these bands that I was fortunate
enough to be exposed to around or just before the turn of the decade are
still doing quite well, thank you, you just have to weed through more crap
at Sam Goody or whatever to find their stuff. I can handle that. As long
as these musicians I respect have the courtesy to make music available to me
(us), I will gladly pad their royalty checks and simply ignore all the other
crap!

        Preachin' on, once again!

all this eddie vedder/rolling stone (that issue came out when? things must
be pretty low in sg land if we're talking about this now) has made me
think...<wow i'm thinking>. personally, i don't believe the article, and
no eddie vedder is not my hero , it was just an irresponsible piece
of journalism, come on, high school sources, get real. yes, yes, i will
continue to trash rolling stone for that article, not because of what
they "revealed" about eddie vedder, but because of the tactics they used
to create that article...totally unproffessional, totally out of line,
very tabloid enquirer like.

now to the point...who really cares about his (or anyone's)
personality/background...isn't the reason we love these
people for the music? you see, this is the reason i try not to read up on
the personal lives of musicians i like, what is the point? so who cares if
eddie vedder was the cool guy in high school (i don't believe it) does he
still not write great music? and who really cares if chris cornell ducks
fans when he sees them...so what? music is the bottom line in all of this,
videos, pictures, books and magazine covers are all extras. now of course
lines should be drawn ( i just don't think i could look at soundgarden the
same way if i found out one of them beats women and rapes dogs)but in my
opinion, i just think music is all that should matter.

just curious, is there anyone on this list who had a bad expierence with a
member of soundgarden (besides poor caryn who practically had her nose

Chris VS. Vedder: They make a great pair (Hunger Strike) Sometimes they
sound similar in my opinion when they see low, but where Chris wins is
the high energy powerfull vocals. (Slaves & Bulldozers, Spoonman,
Outshined, and more) Both are great at singing, but Chris's range and
power makes his voice unbeatable by anybody out there. (MY OPINION)

would like it before I sent it back. I ended up paying $13 for it (which
IMO isn't bad). For anyone who's interested it's a 7" bootleg of
"Earache My Eye" (on black vinyl). Not an original SG song, I know,
but for those of you who like to collect, it may be something you would
like to add to your collection. Email me by Tuesday and let me know.

I don't think anyone thought it was strange. I think this discussion
stemmed from the thread before the Grammys where people were saying what
a sham they are (the Grammys that is), but that SG always showed up. For
me I wondered why Chris was there but the other members weren't. It
didn't surprise me at all that he would be there, since he had been in
the past, or that Susan would be there, since she is the manager of
several nominated bands. I think it somehow got twisted to this idea
that he was coerced to go by Susan because it was only him and not the
others.

Kristen continued:

> Does
> anybody on this list really believe that when Susan says jump-he says
> " How high ? " Just because they work together does'nt mean that in
> private they're not a normal married couple.

While I don't think Chris does or agrees with everything Susan says, I
do think she probably has a pretty big influence both in his private and
professional life - how could she not. Even presidents are influenced by
their wives, and their wives aren't even in management positions.
Knowing some of the history behind their relationship and the assent of
the band it would be stupid of him not to trust her judgement. She has
been instrumental in taking SG from obscurity to stardom.

> As a band they have
> the authority to fire her, which is exactly what I feel they would do
> if she was a domineering, bossy, control freak.

I don't remember anyone calling Susan any of these things. I found some
things I have read about Susan as a manager and thought I would put them
in here just as examples of what I've been trying to say.

From the 1996 Rip reprinted on Seth's page:
"In a heavily male dominated sector of the industry, she's a savvy,
forceful businessperson who has earned the respect of everyone she's
worked with..."

I know New Metal Crown isn't well thought of here, but there are several
good parts about Susan in there as well:

[1987]"At the time when they were still just another band with talent
and a chance, Susan Silver made the decisive moves and gave them the
push they needed, as Howard Lev noted:
'They weren't playing a whole hell of a lot at that time. It seemed
Susan was really picking and choosing their dates at that particular
point and really focusing on them starting to think more about recording
and getting all that together. The two of them [Susan and Chris] went to
New York. I asked what they did there, and he said, 'checking it out.' I
had the sense that she was showing him the way. A lot of it was her
honing his instincts."

"The Rocket's Charles R. Cross, who has dealt with her for a number of
years summed her up this way:
'She's one of the most powerful female rock managers in the
country...She is a powerful, demanding manager, and it's hard for
females to do that, whereas when males are that way,...they're
considered brilliant. She does it and everyone talks about how bossy she
is.'

And finally, from Zen and the Art of Silver Management on Seth's page:

[Susan talking] "At our staff meeting earlier, we were talking about the
pros and cons of any situation, and I used my dogs as an example. The
pro is they reduce my stress level. The con is they increase everybody
else's. When you own your business, you can bring your dogs to work."

> There
> would be no logical reason for him to put up with that, he could
> probably find a thousand girls who'd take her place in a
> heartbeat.

Maybe a thousand who would WANT to take her place (in his life) but I
doubt that he could find a thousand who could REALLY take her place.
Their relationship seems a whole lot more complex than that.

Yes, I was up early this morning (the body gets used to 6.00 am wakeup calls

reception where I live is shit, and more pointedly, on Channel 2, the
picture completely sucks, so I didn't bother to tape it. However, I have a
friend who may have and if he did, I'll post.

Anyways, there was nothing else on the show about Soundgarden (Mark of Cain
played a couple of blistering numbers live however), and apart from the 30
secs or so of live footage from the BDO, the segment was largely
uninteresting. Matt has such a great speaking voice tho...

I was going to ask this question but hadn't got around to it, but not fro
the same reason. I was having a look through one of my brothers Nirvana

Say Anything... with music by SG & mother love bone include on the

Subject: There's one in every crowd.....

....so which ones are Chris, Kim, Matt, and Ben?? My setting is the
neighborhood.

Mr. Know It All; recognized as the man who often has trouble balancing his
own checkbook, but somehow manages to have the solution to the national
debt. This would be Kim Thayil. He often sits on his front porch nursing a
beer and watching other neighborhood dwellers come home from work. Always
says hello when they step out of their car and immediately tries to lure
them over to his porch so he can state his latest opinion on anything and
everything. He tells it to anyone who will listen and occasionally those
who won't. He doesn't mind because he's really just an over-friendly guy.
He likes to have a good beer and stimulating conversation. Most people just
nod and say, "Yes Kim," because in truth they don't really know what he is
talking about. They're being polite and letting him rant all he wants.
He's too much of an intellectual. Maybe after a few beers people might
actually grasp what he is saying. Until then he sits on his porch waiting
for the next person to step out of their car.

Mr. "Aw, shucks!"-recognized as the man who gets your mail while you're out
of town and mows your lawn out of kindness; a true guy next door type. This
would be Matt Cameron. He's got the look. Good build and pretty blonde
hair. The guy who looks like an eternal college student. He helps elderly
ladies across the street. He helps the mom with 3 kids running around bring
in her groceries. He talks cars and motorcycles with the other guys in the
neighborhood. The girls love him. He's a true do-gooder.

The Guy Who Lives In The Haunted House-recognized as the man who seemingly
dwells in the house with the shades always drawn and in bad need of
painting. This would be Ben Shepherd. He makes appearances every once in a
while. He sometimes stays away for days and then just pops back up. When
he comes down the road to the house, the neighborhood children gather in
front of the house and whisper. The yard is really just some tall weeds
now. Rumors about the yard include everything from children supposedly
walking in the yard and never coming back, buffalo sightings, and bear
traps. What the children and the rest of the neighborhood don't know is
that he doesn't really live there. His 105 year old blind grandmother lives
there. He is her only relative and he shows up to take care of her. She
doesn't know how bad the house looks nor does she care and she doesn't want
him spending his money to fix it up.

Experimental-Curiosity Man aka Mr. Way Too Much Spare Time-recognized as the
guy who's house sometimes flickers with light in the middle of the night and
sometimes explosions come from his garage. This would be Chris Cornell. A
quiet individual who usually doesn't socialize much except when knocking on
a neighbor's door at 2am to ask if he could borrow a fire extinguisher. He
means well. He always thinks that his "experiments" are the next big thing.
He's working on all the waves of the future. His basement is littered with
blueprints of some inventions that Albert Einstein couldn't figure out. His
patient and brave wife Susan recognizes when he's fixing to have a
brainstorm so she makes herself scarce by suddenly remembering something
they need from the store or going to a friend's house to help her pick out a
dress. In reality she's notifying the local fire dept. and paramedics that
Chris is at it again and they should be on stand-by. His injuries never
amount to anything more than minor burns, fractures, and the occasional
electrocution.

This is a new thread in my opinion. How do you relate the men of
Soundgarden to people you encounter?? If they were in the crowd who would
they be??

May Soundgarden be with you.

Rebekah

BTW, this was meant to be humorous and most likely familiar to everyone.
