March 11 [16:00 EST]-- Tool, Sonic
Youth, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, R.E.M.,
and Soundgarden's Kim Thayil were among
the artists who signed off on a letter to
                     Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak
                     condemning the government=BAs persecution of
     Egyptian heavy metal fans.

Van Halen, Rush, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Joan Baez, Toad
The Wet Sprocket, The Tea Party, Joan Armatrading, Jackson
Browne, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo also attached their
names to the letter, which was in response to the Egyptian
government's arrest and imprisonment of approximately 100
teenage heavy metal fans. The teens were reportedly rounded up
by Egyptian police on charges of "contempt of heavenly religion"
and held for weeks. The Egyptian government reportedly
released the last four of the teens last week.

"These arrests raise questions about Egypt's commitment to
freedom of expression," the letter reads. "The use of security
forces to intimidate young people because of their choice in
music may be symptomatic of the increasing number of human
rights abuses on the part of the Egyptian government."

"No one should be intimidated, harassed or arrested simply for
listening to music," the letter states.

The statement was delivered to President Mubarak during his
visit to Washington, D.C. this week.

to perhaps phrase the thug's point a bit more rationally, it will make ALL
of us on this list look bad were anyone to harass chris or any of the band
members in this fashion.

then again, i don't believe the story for a minute, but the point is: NO
ONE on this list has any right to call any of the members of soundgarden
at home unless THEY PERSONALLY give you that number and tell you to call.
they have been so open with us, and so helpful, and so generous -- why
would you want to ruin that?!

Gee, you know what? That's exactly how I feel. As a matter of fact,
there's more opinion haggling going on here than just about anything else.
It seems to no avail to suggest private e-mail for haggling, because folks
somehow feel they will lose face unless they attack or reply in the public
forum. Before I leave (if you can't change the world, change yourself) the
Soundgarden fan forum, I'd like to make a few statements:

On the other side of any e-mail address is a HUMAN BEING.

YOU share something with that HUMAN BEING, namely the appreciation of the
talents of other HUMAN BEINGS.

Appreciation for the talent of other HUMAN BEINGS does not make one an
authority on anything other than their own opinion.

YOU, yourself are a HUMAN BEING.

Soundgarden= Talented musicians whom I appreciate. I ain't them, they
ain't me, but it feels like we have something in common. Maybe humanity?

Goodbye and good luck. If you spend more time posting to this list than
listening to Soundgarden, you might be missing the point.

WIll somebody explain to me how you judge someone's love for a band?! Is
there some sort of Richter scale for this that I don't know about?! And is
the intensity of your love for a band increased if you love no other? Or if
you have more 'stuff' ? What about if your screen name is the name of a
member of that band, do ya get some kinda extra points for that? I love many,
many bands, Soundgarden, of course, being at the top of that list, but even
if they weren't, would that not give me a right to be on this list, or call
myself a fan?! I feel that judging the level of one's devotion to SG is not
only impossible, but who fucking cares?! We obviously all think they're
fuckin awesome, can't we leave it at that? There's plenty of room for many
incredible bands! (like MONSTER MAGNET woowoo! any MM fans e-mail me

In an interview that the band did for MuchMusic, I think it was in 1991,
the band talked about the different kinds of fans. They enjoy the ones that
just come up and ask for autographs, but they aren't too particular for the
ones that think that you can talk to them or that they have to listen you
ramble on about whatever just because you bought their album. They said
calling their hotel room and things like that just bugged them alot. I
doubt they would appreciate people calling them at home as well.
I admit, I've thought of looking for the number, but I would never
actually try calling it. It would be more to say "hey wow, I've got it!!"
and I'll just leave it at that. I guess it's a question of respecting their
privacy (no matter how very, very, very very, very, very tempting it is).
That and I don't even want to think of what the phone bill would add up to. :)

This is directed to everyone who seems to think it's so strange that
Chris attended the Grammy's with his wife. What is strange about
either one of them being there ? Soundgarden & AIC were up for awards
and since Susan manages both bands, it makes perfect sense that she
attend, along with members of the bands. Not only that-they're
married and as far as I know, married couples are supposed to spend
time together. If they did'nt go places together, that would be
strange. I don't think Chris went because she made him go. Does
anybody on this list really believe that when Susan says jump-he says
" How high ? " Just because they work together does'nt mean that in
private they're not a normal married couple. Finally, in reality she
works for Soundgarden, not the other way around. As a band they have
the authority to fire her, which is exactly what I feel they would do
if she was a domineering, bossy, control freak. This is not meant as
an insult to anybody who wrote in, but I just don't see Chris Cornell
as some wimpy, spineless idiot who lets his wife run his life. There
would be no logical reason for him to put up with that, he could
probably find a thousand girls who'd take her place in a
heartbeat.(Shroom, for instance, and I'm sure she'd be damn good at it
too !) Later. Kristen F.

I can not agree with you more, Charles. It's almost a sad commentary on
our society that if you take away the human factors of communication
(those lost in email), then people find it harder to get along than
ever.
However, it's good for people to argue their points, in that we all may
learn things from each other's points of view (as they relate to SG, of
course)... Now, if we could just learn to stay somewhat civil when we
argue, then our messages could go through much more clearly...

SG is off... it's a down time in SG land... these are the times when
there's not much else to talk about except rehashed subjects and
newfound flames... It would be cool if we could come up with a new list
project to keep us busy during this off time... Maybe I can get off my
ass and finally get this SG cover compilation thingy rolling... hmmm...

Never said that either. All I mean is that the people on the list who
truly feel Soundgarden is their #1 favorite may have a stronger loyalty
to the band and may express their feelings in a way you perhaps disagree
with, or can't understand, if Soundgarden isn't your #1 favorite. And I
don't only mean YOU caryn, I mean anyone for whom SG isn't their
favorite band. It doesn't mean anyone's opinion is any less valid.

Gee, thanks.

then again, i know you don't

Never said that either.

The point I was trying to make is that people should not have to defend
their feelings about SG on this list. I agree with Seth that we don't
have to trash other bands to do that, but I don't know why you should
take that trashing so personally. In fact, I didn't trash anyone. Why my
post caused such outrage I don't understand, since I've been quietly
reading a weeks worth of nonsensical arguing about Smashing Pumpkins vs.
Soundgarden. But since Caryn is allowed to say anything she pleases,
while the rest of us have to be careful of offending her, I guess my
opinion doesn't matter. Oh, and emailing someone *privately* is all well
and good, but unfortunately some people on this list don't respond to
that kind of courtesy and prefer to do their dirty work in a public
arena.

Hey SOMMSters,

Sorry to unload the burden of my ignorance on all of you, but I'm having an
intense mental dilemma:
Monday, I picked up for the first time, a seemingly cool magazine called
Circus. I was reading through it and I got to a list of band members'
birthdays. When I got to Soundgarden, two of the "members" listed, besides
Chris and Kim, were bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey. Now
perhaps I'm just having a memory lapse, but these names don't ring a bell as
far as past members or anything like that. Why they have them as current
members, I cannot even begin to imagine. Perhaps they are from a prehistoric
Soundgarden.
Well, I would really appreciate if someone could enlighten me on this
subject.

Thanks

P.S. I'm still in search of a BMF/SOMMS set. Pleeease don't reduce me to

Subject: x-philes out there? Sg in the movies

hey everybody. . . .

i was wondering - are there any x-philes out there besides me? and if
there are - wouldn't it be great if Sg contributed to the next X-Files
soundtrack? (if there is another one, which there probably will be)
i think the atmosphere on the X-Files and the atmosphere Sg create
in their music would go perfectly together. i also think the themes in
certain Sg songs and certain x-files would sorta go together.

i wonder if any of them watch it.

for a long times i've thought to myself if i make it in the movie
business, i want to try and get Chris to do the score for one of my
movies - i even know which one.

so i was also wondering - if Chris, Ben, Matt or Kim was going to do
the score for a film, or if Sg was going to contribute another song to
a soundtrack, what sort of film do you think it would be, or should
be? what song would you want it to be, if it wasn't a new song?

that's all for now...

This made me smile. I wish I could have written my project as such. :)

Very well put. Do you think that your best friend likes you more when
they degrade every other friend that they have?

Such a plethora (7th grade bonus vocab word) of interesting Soundgarden
articles to read. I sincerely hope that the Cornell/Corgan. . .<pause>.
. .thing. . .is over.

I love the interview with Eleven members and Soundgarden on the Pretty
Noose single. I can't stop giggling everytime I hear
"MisterBunchyPants"! <chuckle chuckle snort snort>

Love you all

all this chris vs. insert name of singer here is really a litte
pointless...no one will agree and everyone will fight and it gets long and
boring for some of us (like me who knows nothing about sp, yeah i'm being
selfish, crucify me) its nice to hear different views, but everyone
gets so offended/misunderstood/misquoted etc...on this list, cornell is
king, bottom line.. and on the aic list, staley is king..and on the pj
list, vedder is king and blah blah and more blah...now everyone kiss,
make up and be happy!

Sorry Seth and everyone else, but I had to respond to yet another flaming of
Caryn. This is absolutely ridiculous... but if you're getting tired of flame
wars... then PLEASE delete this post.

Carol (slave4cc@aol.com) wrote:

Caryn *has* been on this list for quite a long time, and she has contributed
MORE than alot of valuable input on various threads than most people
(including myself). If she wants to post *20* times a day, then that's fine
by me. Does she need to get upset by other people opinions? When they're
insults directed at her or her friends... hell yes, she does. Since she's
been back on the list, I haven't seen a single trace of her flaming anyone
without being provoked. Caryn is a sensitive person, and she *is* friendly.
Carol, who are YOU to question Caryn's right to post? You write:

>As a person you are entitled to your opinion!! Never be afraid to express
>it, especially if it doesnt hurt others personally.

What a completely hypocritical statement! First you publicly attack Caryn,
and then you try to tell other people to be nice. Look girlie... if other
people can post their opinions, then Caryn has every right to post HERS too.
And if her opinions concern you so damn much, why in the hell didn't you
just write her a *private* note... insteading of flaming her in front of
700+ people? I'm posting this response to the list because Caryn has been
treated unfairly for the past week or so... and I'm absolutely sick of it.

>I RESPECT and ENJOY SOMMS people. They are intelligent,
>charming, nice and fun.

Then perhaps you should try to emulate them.

>I dont hate you Caryn, but give me a reason to LIKE You.

Caryn doesn't have to prove herself to anyone, much less you. And here's a
piece of advice... if you don't want to read Caryn's posts... DELETE the damn
things. She hasn't said a single thing to you, but yet you find it necessary
to attack her? Grow up.

>I know I made you angry....but you cant get me, so Nanner! Nanner!

Uh, yeah... how old are you again?

Subject: Brad Pitt in RS
From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

In the April 3 issue of Rolling Stone, there's a slight mention of
Soundgarden in the interview with Brad Pitt. I haven't seen it mentioned
here, but if it has already appeared, may I incur all the wrath of Sommsters.

Excerpt:
"... [Pitt] is moving around, talking with his hands. He puts on another
CD - Soundgarden ("Greatest band in rock & roll right now"). For the
moment, he is tired of talking about himself, so he cranks up "Burden in
My Hand" and proceeds to rock out. It's always sort of a strange moment
when someone rocks out. What is the etiquette here? Fill in on air drums?
Pick up something and examine it?..."

Any Seattle "Almost Live" watchers in here? Well, if you are, did you see
Kim Thaylil on it this Saturday? He was on there for the 'Rock Star Camp'
and he also used to appear on the 'Lame List' quite a bit! It was
hilarious.

Did any of you sommsters hear about the arrest of all the kids in Egypt for
listening to metal music? That pissed me off what a stupid reason, until I
heard that alot of the bands and including Kim Thaylil wrote a letter to
the government of Egypt demanding that the kids be released and what not!
I thought that was pretty cool of our bud Kimmy!

I almost bought it, until I looked around a bit more and found
*another* box... to my knowledge there are two singles boxes...
there's the one you saw, with just a BHS single inside... I think
when I found it, it was selling for around $7.99... then there's
the box I bought, which has "SuperunknownSingles" (I think) spelled
out in silver and gold on the front... it has two BHS singles, a
cool black Spoonman single, and a Day I Tried To Live single...
plus an order form for more singles... I got it for about $20...
I'm not sure that's a great price, but I figure since singles
(around here, at least) normally sell for around $9.99, paying
$20 for 4 of them didn't seem to be a bad deal...
there are some pretty cool b-sides in there, which makes it worth
it, IMO... you get Cold Bitch, Birth Ritual (demo), Like Suicide
(acoustic), a good live version of Kickstand, an AWESOME live
version of Beyond The Wheel... and some others, which I forget
(I forgot to dring it with me when I moved back up to school,
dammit)... there are about 7-8 b-sides total...
if you don't own/haven't heard most of the songs in there, and
you can find it for a reasonable price, I say get it.
