hey guys--

i have a quick tidbit to share...i just got back from europe last night and
on the pre-programmed aero-music channel called "contemporary scene" (or
something queer like that) the first song was johnny cash's version of *rusty
cage*. i was shocked, but psyched as i had been without sg (or even a sg
facsimile!) for 10 days. props to usair!

i also got some cool cd's in london at hmv--most excited about the german
black hole sun single with live versions of jcp and beyond the wheel.

anyway, unfortunately i had to unsub from the list, but if anyone wants to
get in touch with me in the future, best to try
"laurawein@aol.com"--especially if we ever have the somms get-together here
in washington, dc (hint, hint jamie!) :-)

Yes, I've really missed this. It seems quite strange to me actually, it's
been like two years and nothing's actually changed. In fact, I've had this
very same argument, if not twice, and each time for some reason I've been
wrong. In fact, Caryn, it's nice to know that someone, for just once,
actually agrees.

> you didn't even offer a constructive discussion, like justin did... so

people on
> here?

Most people don't, it's a mailing list. It's usually an excuse to talk
about Chris Cornell's car, his wife's car, probably his parents' car as
well. If we run out of conversation then we can just talk about the
awards; about how once again we can find a category for music and sell it
with fancy packaging and cleavage. Never mind bootlegging, this is petty
change in comparison. We might eventually manage a conversation but then
that would probably be quite pointless as someone will swear excessively at
you and tell you that your whole argument is not really constructive and
nothing more than egotistical rubbish. That really would explain why I
can't recognise most of the people on this list.

> in the future i'd appreciate it if someone is going to criticize what i

I very much doubt it. As good as your work might be, if it doesn't say
"fuck" or offends someone, nobody will actually read it. They take the
gist of what you're saying and then reply with something completely
irrelevant to what you actually said, though it will contain the word
"fuck" and will more than likely offend you, just to make sure that you'll
read it.

> Chris seems like a total alien to the "celebrity scene".

You really think so Kathie, he probably wouldn't be quite as marketable if
he was. He didn't seem quite so alienated in "Detail" magazine, or any of
the other magazine articles or interviews that I've seen or read. He's a
celebrity, he has to be, it wouldn't be music otherwise. Your mother
sounds like quite an interesting character by the way, she reminds me a
little of mine.

If anyone has a copy of the Pre-Grammy interview on MTV guess who is in
the background when Chris is talking.....yep! Susan I had to pause the VCR
to confirm it was her BUTT she is "minding the store" as we say. I think
alot of times artistic people don't have "business sense" hence all the old
rock and rollers who got ripped off by unscrupulous managers back in the
50's and 60's. I'm glad that Soundgarden has someone who looks after them
and makes wise decisions. The only problem I can see is I would think Chris
and Susan would get sick of "Soundgarden"(the job) it has to permeate a good
part of their lives together also. Sometimes mixing work and home is
bad....ask anyone that works in the same place as their mate! toni

Hello,

I was reading that fascidnating account on Sundays list of that guys
school project where he was subjecting seedlings to BHS and they DIDNT grow
very big (this is really funny to me Im sorry=). I know you got an "A" and
all. I think perhaps a better experiment would have been to put one
container under a grow lamp with Soundgarden posters on the walls and play
the entire BMF album over and over in one room, and put, like another
container in sunlight listening to Superunknown over and over with no
pictures for inspiration and just see what happens. I bet there would NOT be
a difference, only the light source would be different, or maybe the
vibrations would be different. Maybe you should try this with pot plants.
(just kidding)

I just had to comment on that one....he was so in depth with the whole
thing (#2 lead pencil and all). I have found listening to Soundgarden does
not appear to have any adverse affects on fish, at least none have committed
jump-out-of-the-tank suicide while being forced to listen to it real loud.
Although I think one has brain damage cuz he likes to swim round in circles
and and smack his head on the lid really hard while NO MUSIC is playing at
all. Its like dam, stop it or Im flushing you.

Yea, and after some reporter goes and blabs to the world what kind of car
Chris drives, he has to go and get a..a...Mustang?? Yea I bet on Mariah
Carry's life its black too ;). Why the heck not go for the old mopar muscle
cars, like a '79 Dodge Challenger RT or something really cool! (Warning:

Yes, it's as scary as it sounds. I was reading the March issue of Replay
mag (one of those record store rags, I think) and there was a little
blurb about Steve & Eydie (sp?) doing an album called "Lounge-a-palooza"
which, I'm assuming, will consist of lounge-style covers of
*alternative* songs a la Pat Boone's new metal album. Included will be a
cover of "Black Hole Sun". Actually, I believe this was called a
"highlight". I'll keep my commentary to myself in case there are any
diehard Steve & Eydie fans on the list. Just thought I'd share the info.

BTW, does anyone have the lyrics to "Heartfist"? If so, could you send
them to me--I'd greatly appreciate it!

I just finished reading "Soundgarden: New metal crown" (aka. the SG bible)
by Chris Nickson, and I'm kinda surprised by the way he considers UMOK as a
mistake; a record that caught SG in a transition between punk and metal, and
therefor it basically sucked. I find this very hard to believe. Don't you
out there think that songs like "Flower", "All your Lies", "Beyond the
wheel", "Smokestack Lightning" (which he slaughtered), "Head Injury",
"Incessant Mace" and last but not least, "Mood for trouble" (I personally
rank this song among the 'top ten' from SG) KICK ASS???

Also, is there any other books written about SG?

Ok, Betty, if you go back and carefully read Billy's post, you'll notice
that he does not claim that there WILL be a box set, but he is asking if
there will be a box set. As far as a new album goes, in the interview
preceding the Grammies, Chris said they may start working on a new album
immediately. Nobody has officially announced any dates, but if you
think about it, they are not going to release a new album next week.
Hopefully we'll have a new album by the end of the year, but
realistically I'd guess early next year.
Does anybody recall the band's official stance on box-sets? It seems to
me they have addressed the live-album issue, but I don't recall them
mentioning box-sets. We know that they are not likely to release a live
album for a few years at least. But what about a box-set? What the
hell would they have to put on one? All the bsides I already have?
That would kinda suck. Though it would be cool to have all of these
songs on a few discs, instead of ten or so. Alright, I'm done blabbing.

First of all,I'd like to say hi and thanks to anyone who takes the
time to read this. I've been on the list for a few months but this is
my first time posting.
As far as who "wears the pants" in Chris and Susan's relationship
I would like to think that they are equal partners and make decisions
together. I feel sure that Chris welcomes her advice and guidance when
it comes to his career but I can't see him going along with something
unless he agreed that it was the best thing to do. I don't think Susan
would want to be thought of as domineering,I know I wouldn't find it
flattering myself. As far as them going to the Grammy Awards together
I tend to agree with the person who said(I'm sorry I don't remember the
name) that he went with her because she needed or wanted to be there.
Since I don't know Chris and Susan I feel very presumptuous even
trying to guess about the nature of anything concerning their relation-
ship but this is just my opinion based on what I've read,or heard, or
seen of the two of them over the years.

other copies owned by non-listmembers. Now, even if you did email me

are in chronological order by time I received a notice that you own a

P.S. If anybody else has a copy, email me preferably with the word
SOMMS in the subject. I'll only count genuine copies. (i.e. not a

A name followed by (+1) indicates that that person also knows people who

he "welcomes her advice and guidance"??? she is not just his frickin'
girlfriend, she is his MANAGEr, the manager of Soundgarden, also the
manager of Alice in Chains and other bands. As such, her PRIMARY
responsibility is Chris Cornell's and Soundgarden's career!

although i do agree that chris wouldn't do something that he personally
didn't feel right about, nor should he.

> I don't think Susan

ya know, if t heir manager was 1) not married to the lead singer; and 2) a
man, none of us would be having intense discussions about them, inferring
anything about them, or otherwise making judgements when we know nothing
about silver management's internal workings.

susan silver is highly regarded in the music industry as a highly
professional manager who does a lot for her acts. the fact that she's
also married to chris is almost incidental at this point in her career.

>As far as them going to the Grammy Awards together

maybe he wanted to go with her? maybe he thought it would be fun? i'm
sure susan went because AiC were there, and maybe for once they'd actually
WIN something.

i mean, didn't we have the discussion already that they should go, and
some thought they shouldn't go -- seems to me that no matter WHAT they do,
go or don't go, it's going to engender all sorts of useless discussion
because it is, after all, none of our BUSINESS.

and i maintain that chris' attending the grammies has nothing to do with
his personal relationship with susan, as far as we know.

I'm fairly certain that during a recent radio interview chris
lamented the fact that it was non-u.s. citizens who benefitted from the
inclusion of b-sides on single releases, and that those fans at home who
buy their records get none (few, if any, singles have ever been officially
released in the u.s., I'm told). so he ended up commenting how it would
be cool to release a box set of some description, which would probably
include all of the b-sides from dotu-era singles.

opinion, we're here because of you guys, they're here because of you guys,
everybody's here because you made this happen. the local news didn't make
it happen. rolling stone magazine didn't make it happen and mtv didn't
make it happen. it was you guys who made it happen and you gotta
realise...you gotta realise you're a power. if anybody tells you that you
can't buy something or you can't read something or you can't hear
something or you can't say something you gotta fight and you gotta kick
ass and make sure your fuckin' will is known. this is a song dedicated to
that feeling. this is called cop killer by a band called bodycount...

before the "fuck the police" bridge: " remember that you're not
singing about wanting to kill somebody. you're just singing for your
rights..."

after the bridge: "...well, it's midnight and you're coming home
from some late night refreshment and your hair is too long or your skin is
too black, and so they make you in your beat up old car...and they pull
you over and they start infringing on your rights as an american, the
rights that you pay taxes for, the rights that you live for, the rights
that you hopefully fuckin' vote for...those donut-eating, too much coffee
drinkin', too quick on the trigger mother fuckers - fuck the police..."

I hope that serves as a good intro to the cd, toni. I would dub
it for you, but I have too much on my plate at the moment as it is.

of course it would be "cool" for chris.... he won't have to pay through
the nose for it. ;-(

that's my primary argument about box sets. if i'm enough of a fan of a
band, i have all the rare stuff, somehow, and i just end up feeling ripped
off by the box set.

if i'm not enough of a fan, i won't spend that kind of money on a box set.
it's like the (sorry to mention their name yet AGAIN) pumpkins box set,
which is way cool -- i like them, but not enough to spend $35 for it.
(and i have to say that i think $35 was an unbelievably reasonable price
for that particular box set).

most box sets are imo a huge ripoff to the fans. ;-( and since A&M has
been so bloody LAME with their non-lp bsides, i can't imagine they'd
somehow be able to distinguish themselves and create a really super-cool
soundgarden box set, fairly priced, that I would want...

I'm not sure if you are talking about soundgarden specifically
caryn, but I'm fairly certain that the choice of recent b-sides fell to
the band, not a&m. the selection of dotu-era b-sides (repeats of *video*
material, for pete's sake) seems to mirror the band's sentiment towards
"unreleased material" - that their albums are so long that further tracks
aren't necessary. call it stingy if you will (and I would add my voice to
that chorus), but that is how the band feels. so I wouldn't expect much
out of any box set or compilation that may be in the works. any tracks
already published to be included would be ho hum ('jerry garcia's finger')
and I don't imagine that any new material they've been squirreling away
(like 'christi') will be on there.

now if only a&m would pull their finger out and give us a *hater*
box set...

Preach on Sister!

This really struck a chord with me as I often get into arguments with my
employees about this. I don't believe in forcing my opinion on others
(only explaining it) but I don't like having other's opinions forced on
me. This may appear contradictory at first, but look at it this way.
If you can state your opinion and explain it in a way without degrading
and/or disrespecting someone else's (whatever it may be) then your
opinion is as valid as my driver's licence.

Controversy = good stuff

Anyway, got my pretty noose single in the mail today. Part 1 only, but
nevertheless, there it was.

I miss Soundgarden.

Bye.

Love you all

then i'm even more pissed about it. the selections i've seen have been
what i'd expect some marketing drone at a major label would think that the
"kids" would want to hear.

justin, i'm not even looking for demos or tracks that didn't make it to
the album, what i can't understand is the inclusion of live tracks from
1990 that are not that all rare. i refuse to believe that soundgarden
haven't been recording live performances, if not systematically, at least
sporadically enough to produce at least a HANDFUL of tracks that we all
haven't heard already!

like i said above, i'm not even looking for that. but i refuse to believe
they didn't record any of their lolla appearances... or the showbox... or
any of the european dates. surely out of that would result a handful of
tracks that would be new and different to hear....

Hey, all you participants in this lame and pointless debate...

Cornell is a good lyricist
Corgan is a good lyricist
But neither of them can hold a candle to Il Duce of the Mentors.
I mean, come on - "The Four F Club"? "Sandwich of Love"? "Golden Showers"?
- - like anyone has a chance against such raw mastery of English composition!

Actually, this is a joke... all except the part about the debate being lame
and pointless. It's only a matter of taste and opinion... you may as well
debate the existence of God. Some people say one thing, some say the
other, and there's no way to win one bunch over to the other viewpoint.

But, in a fight, Cornell could kick Corgan's skinny little butt.

Peace,
Chris

I think that this is a good cd too. The sound isn't the bast, and it
isn't really long, but it's good. Just to let you know, I bought mine
for $14.00 used. - Marie

I'll get straight to the point today:

I am DYING to see the Jesus Christ Pose video!!!! I've tried to get it off my
computer, but I don't have something it requires, bla bla bla. I know
basically *nothing* about computers, except that they're expensive and a pain
in the ass. But it's all worth it, right??? ;) I would be *eternally*
greatful to anyone who could somehow get me a copy of this masterpiece.

Now I'll wander a bit: ;)

About the Billy Corgan/Chris crap that's floating around - I'll have to say
that the both of them have NOTHING on Ben!! I think that this thread is
getting *very* dull and annoying. Let's face it guys - there're three sides
you can be on:

  1. Chris' (yeah!)
  2. Billy's
  3. Don't care.

Everyone here is basically saying the same thing in different words.
While I am *not* saying that everyone's opinions are not important, I *am*
saying that we could put our opinions to a better use than beating the crap
out of an old thread. *While* I am saying this - remember that it's also just
*my* opinion.

Now that I have probably miffed quite a few people, and confused a few
more, I will go plug in Motorvision and fast forward, pause, and rewind to
all of the spots where Ben's small, hard ass makes cameo apperances across my
screen. =)

When I saw this I just had to reply, Savage Garden, I too have made the
mistake of thinking that they were really cool with a name which is
associated with an Ann Rice novel, I thought they may have been a bit Goth
perhaps or maybe a bit like Soundgarden. But alas neither is true they are a
pop band in the most uncool way and they are not Euro-pop they are in fact
an Australian band from the city I live in (shame) Brisbane. I actually came
across them because a friend of mine was asked to find the single by this
band Savage garden by her brother (I should have known since who really
wants the single of a cool band when you could get the album).

I'd just like to clarify that quite a few really cool bands do come from
Brisbane including:
The Saints, Regurgitator, Custard, Powderfinger, Pangaea & Melniks
I just thought I'd clarify that so that others are not mistaken as I was.

Savage Garden are getting airplay in America??? My god! Savage Garden are
an Australian band from Brisbane, very poppy and nothing like Soundgarden.
Nice to see an Oz band getting some air play though.
