well, despite the lack of traders here on somms, perhaps some
wonderful lister has a copy of the boot entitled _push_ and would be
willing to tape it for me? I recently went into <pointing and snarling>
the record exchange here in brisbane and saw said bootleg under the glass.
I took a look at it and asked the guy behind the counter how much it was.
he said "$45", which I thought was reasonable for a double cd, but then he
turns to some other guy after noting that it is in fact a double cd and
asks him for backup. the guy goes "no, that's *$90*"!

so if anyone wants to send me $90 worth of soundgarden music, I'd
be glad to either trade or send tapes. once it's here (and I'm hoping it
does), I'll circulate it around to any australian listers who want it.

I think this is an excellent suggestion. How can you judge someone's
evaluation if you don't know what the criteria behind their evaluation
is?

For example, when I am trying to determine the esthetic impact of a song,
I try to determine the extent to which the song stirs my emotions.
If the song succeeds in evoking strong emotions in me, then I may say it
is an esthetically pleasing song. Even if the emotions are negative
emotions, I enjoy having them stirred up. The lyrics and sound of
Mind Riot always remind me of painful events from my past. Thus,
I think that Mind Riot is an esthetically pleasing song.

My criteria for poetry is something like this: deliberate and precise use
of language to convey a message and/or evoke an emotion. Poetry is
distinguishable from prose in that the language of prose is not as
precisely controlled as the language of poetry.

I believe that many song lyrics qualifiy as poetry, given this definition.
Other people may have other definitions of poetry that would preclude
rock lyrics from being called poetry. Some definitions of poetry require
meter and rhyme, for example. I don't happen to define poetry that way.

I think that most of the Soundgarden lyrics I have heard qualify as
poetry, but I doubt the band gives a shit what I call it.

Thanks for listening,
Tiffany

If Lance thinks CC is the greatest ever, that's his prerogative, his
right, his *opinion*. It has nothing to do w/ being "misinformed."

I remember something that happened last year in school which
*really* pissed me off, and ended up starting a big debate. We were
in the middle of... I think it was "Hamlet" (I forget now) in english.
But anyway, we were discussing "great works of literature", and I
remember some kid saying he considered Stephen King one of the
greatest writers of all time. The teacher acted like he was some kind
of a moron. What! What absolute rubbish! How could any intelligent
person *possibly* think that?! Stephen King hasn't stood the test of
time! And he probably won't! He's not in textbooks!
This, of course, got me out of sorts, and I made it very clear that I
disagreed. That was the onset of a debate which lasted days.
My point is, "greatest" works of literature, poetry, anything, are all a
matter of personal opinion. Time and textbooks have nothing to do w/
it.
Instead of criticizing someone for saying that they think CC, or
whoever, is the "greatest", how bout we ask them *why* they think
so, and then offer our opinions on the matter, if we should have
them.

>people look for too much validation from others to prove that their
>views on songs are 'correct.' a lot of us are secure in our
>interpretation of the song not to question any further.

Another thing that pisses me off. I love discussing songs and their
meaning w/ people... it's something I can sit & talk about for hours
& hours. But I remember a few years ago, when BHS came out,
and I was watching the video, and my mom comes in and asks, "I
hear that song on the radio all the time... what are they talking
about?" And I was like "mom, if you're really interested, why don't
you just listen to the words and figure it out for yourself." "Well it
must mean something. But it doesn't make sense. They just keep
saying 'black hole sun, won't you come' over and over... is it about
sex?" Now, this incident was one of the many things that prompted
me to later ask if I was adopted, and hope that the answer was
"yes." It wasn't. But stranger things have happened.

>for a lot of SG's songs it's the music which gets me rockin and
>keeps me buying records

Of course the first thing you think about when you hear a song for
the first time is the music. That's what initially grabs you. It's not
likely that if you don't like the music, the lyrics are going to change
your mind about the song...

It's *really* late. I'm falling asleep. To be continued...

Subject: Re: SG bootleg dilemma

Hey, here's my 2 cents worth on bootlegs.

I love live video and used to trade heavily for PJ and Sg and YES stuff.
Well, the Sg stuff is actually the bastion of my friend Lin, but I can say
she traded for most of what she has and has only bought a few things. She
also traded alot for live audio. I do not mean bootleg CDs--those things
are a pure rip off! You can get the same qulaity when you trade on
cassettes. I've said it in the past so I'll say it again...

Go to a big bookstore and see if they carry a traders newspaper called
Goldmine. Goldmine carries classified ads full of people who want to do
trades of live shows. And by live shows I mean stuff people have taped
themselves, not the crappy quality CDboots people pay huge prices for. If
it's on CD it was on a tape first! So what if nearly every show or alot of
shows are on CDboots....you're paying too much for them, people!!!! No way
is a live show worth $50 simply b/c it's on CD!!!

Now when it comes to rare stuff, like let's say unreleased, studio demos and
stuff...well, I have a dilemma there b/c I know from Sg and PJ and other
bands that sometimes stuff that was never meant to reach the public has
gotten into the wrong hands and those wrong hands in turn sold it to some
rip-off artist who makes it into CDs and sells it for a massive profit.
That's something I have a problem with! What...it costs like $2 to make a
CD and they get sold for $40-$60??? Where's the justice in that?

So I find Cd bootlegs a huge rip-off and still am of the opinion that if you
get into the trading circuit you'll find the same shows, maybe even better
quality, and most likely even more shows than are on CD!!!! I don't own any
CD boots and I've been trading stuff (for various bands) since 1985! I'd be
interested in hearing everyone else's take on this stuff! ciao....deb

Hello everyone...
Well I haven't posted i a while, alot of things have been happening
which seems all bad. Yall are all probley dyeing to hear why my life at
this moment sucks, so I will tell you. First problem. I am 16 years
old and over the last two weeks I have aquired a boy friend. My dad
thinks I am to young but with the help of my step mom he was warming to
the idea. I am thinking everything is going ok and with a little time
he will be completly ok with it. I was wrong. My boy friend(Jeremy)
being the dumb ass that he is came to my house at 2:30am knocking on my
window. My dad caught him and now my dad says I can't ever see him
again. I think that my dad is totally over reacting. I am not saying
don't punish us, but cutting us off from each other is wrong. If my dad
doesn't want me to see him there is no way I can get around it since we
don't go to the same school and the only time I got to see him in the
first place is when he comes to visit his mom on the weekends. To all
you dads out there. Would you do the same thing if you were in my dads
position? And how should I handle it? Not say anything or confront my
father? I am at a lose. HELP...
Second problem. Today my dad was admitted into the hospital because he
has been having heart trouble. They ran some test including a cardio
cath. and found two of his arteries are midly blocked. This really
sucks. All of you adults are probly saying you wish your troubles were
so trivial. But dammit to me these are big problems.
Now I know that the Corgan/Cornell comparison has been ran into the
ground but I have to say my *opinion*. The following statement is a
opinion and should be treated as such...In my *opinion* Chris is the
superior writer. But since I am a person with no musical talent what so
ever I greatly respect any one with any. Maybe not any one. I don't
think you have to have talent to talk fast and use ebonics.(rap)Once
again this is my humble *opinion*. And I am not a SP fan so immediatly
I will take SG side.

Here is what I think about the bootleg issue....

sure soundgarden doesnt make any money, but they also didnt have to take
the time to record or anything like that. They were going to play that
show regardless, so the guy who took the time to record it is the only guy
who spent any time on it.

Subject: on the subject of lyrics....

I wanted also to respond to a few things I have been reading over the
past few days:

1. "personal" as describing a song is exactly that - PERSONAL. What I
consider personal to me is infinitely more different than what another
person would consider. Seal once said something about why he didn't
print lyris in the sleeve of his 2nd CD - because his lyrics mean one
thing to him and that they will mean something else to every individual
who listens to his music. He'd rather leave it for people to decide what
they can relate in their realm of experience. I think the degree of that
is going to be different for everybody and so you can't really make a
true statement about what is truly personal and what is not. It all
depends on the individual.

2. I am also more drawn to the music itself initially, and not the
lyrics. I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that I am an
instrumentalist and not a vocalist, and that I study classical and jazz
music - I'm a lot more prone to listen to cool sounding melodic fragments
or a killer groove or drum fill. This may appear as sacrilige but there
are not many Soundgarden songs that I have the lyrics committed to
memory. I think also that combinations of music and lyrics can mean
different things to different people. How many times have you thought
that one of Chris' lyrics was one thing and then checked out the lyrics
section of seth's page and thought, "ohhhh! so that's how it goes"

Okay, well I guess I'll start with my question: on The Garden Grows, what in
the hell is Chris saying on Spoonman when he's supposed to be saying "come
on, we like it all". It sounds like to me, that he's saying "come on and
suck me all". I feel that I'm way off here (plus it's probably that hootchie
part of me that heard it anyway). Please, let me know if you have a clue!!
Next, my thought: Well, on the stretch of road (I-10) that I drive to and
from school everyday, I usually see a lot of limos coming to and from the
casinos (I guess that is where they're coming from). Well, the day before
yesterday I thought to myself, "Where are all the limos?" And then I
thought, "Wouldn't it be so weird to come up on a two or three limo pile up
in a ditch somewhere." Then the song Limo Wreck came on and I almost ran off
the road. Imagine trying to explain to your parents how you wrecked your car
with that excuse. Anyway, I remember reading somewhere (I think) that this
is sort of what Chris had in mind when he wrote the song. Am I wrong? I
just thought that was a really weird coinsedence.
Last but not least, the things that clutter your brain: I was listening to
the interview on the Pretty Noose single (thanks Scott) and I heard them
saying something about the title for the album and then something about Matt
wanting to call it Mr. Bunchy Pants. Okay, I wanted to know if ya'll would
have thought them crazy for calling their album this (HAHA). So unlike
them!!! Also I wanted to know if ya'll have ever thought of any other
titles that they should have called any one of their albums. Do ya
understand what I'm asking??? Probably not!!
Last thing (I promise): Happy Birthday to Shroom!!!! ~<|:) (put your party
hats on)!!!
Sorry to carry on the way I did!! Take care and be sweet!!

He's saying "Come on, like it all"..and since we are talking about
Spoonman, let me just say that to anyone who hasn't checked out Seth's
site in a few days, the new Song of the Month is up and it is Spoonman,
to celebrate the release of Soundgarden's best album ever, Superunknown.
It was released 3 years ago this month. Three years. Unreal. Speaking of
Spoonman, what do you all think of the Steve Fisk remix of the song?

I was saying before that of course the music is just as important as
the lyrics. Music can convey just as much emotion as words can,
sometimes more. Some of my all-time favorite works are musical
compositions w/out any words. Zoltan Kodaly, Aaron Copland, and
esp Glenn Miller are some of the most brilliant artists ever, imo.

I guess it's b/c I've always used words more than anything else to
get rid of anger, pain, etc, that the words of others strike such a
chord w/ me and I feel such an affinity to their writers.

It could just be coincidence that w/ most of my favorite songs, the
lyrics and music mean equally as much to me. Or it could be that the
writers are so talented they were able to pair lyrics and music that
are both incredibly amazing and fit perfectly together.

>i think that most SG lyrics i have heard qualify as poetry.....

THey wrote the music to put onto albums that they make a lot of money off
of... they tour to sell more albums and tshirts and crap like that... I am
not saying that that isnt a lot of work and im not even saying they dont
deserve royalties for publishing rights. But bootlegs are a way to get
different music out to your fans and generate perhaps more of a fan

I'll leave it up to you, if you want to include this one in the Digest...

Of course, I agree with Seth, but more with Mr. Dunn. The way SG's music and
lyrics are knitted together so tightly, (sometimes) almost indistinguishable
from one-another, is sort of one of their trademarks. But for me it doesn't
really matter that much how good the music is; if the lyric suck, the
'feeling' just isn't there. I find that it's the lyrics that distinguish SG
from the mainstreem rock'n roll bands (well, I admit, it's not just that).
And as for the phrase: "eat the fruit and kiss this snake goodnight", it's
obviously a reference to the primal sin. For further information regarding
this topic, you should check out the article written by Neil Strauss at:

Chris Cornell sends in a rich collection of music. This movie takes music
like a sponge. For me, Cornell is the very soul of seattle music and itrs
endearing darkness. I remeber him the night Andy Wood died. He put his

Ok, let's move into the facts.

1. in my opinion, Chris is a deep songwriter(hell, I should know), and so is
Billy. How can anyone really say who is deeper? How can you really measure
how deep a guy's soul is? the thing is not how deep YOU think it is, but how
YOU relate to it.

2. Ben. Ben. Ben. What can I say about Ben. The inside joke of me
getting married to Ben(Very long story), but Ben is Ben, so stop criticizing
him!

3. The fork. I know about the thing with Shannon(god rest his soul), but
why is there such a bubble about the fork? Was there somehting I missed?
Chris did stop wearing it after Shannon died, and the one with the stone in
the middle is of (I think..If I remember clearly)a goddess....I forget
exaclty what it is called though.

4. Shroomy, welcome back, I kept your seat warm for you. I also have a
picture of Chris I know you'll love, even though it isn't Chris in his
birthday suit....too bad I don't have a scanner though. I have it right over
the top of my bedhead.

Did anyone tape the grammy pre-show on MTV? Does anyone know where to pick
up the Inflatable Soule CD? Get back to me on this one, there's something
really important on that Cd.

"Walk and you'll find the garden full of singing, happy souls"

Subject: the music not just the lyrics

I have to say that I agree with Seth, I rarely even hear the lyrics in
most songs it's the way it's sung that gets me also the music. A fine
example of this is Rusty Cage it took Johnny Cash for most people to
hear the lyrics I think mainly because with soundgarden your to busy
listing to the whole to deconstruct it to find the lyrics.

Oh could someone please give me a physical discription of this fork
because I've never seen it and I'd like to know what it's importance is.

Yeah, they only took the time to write, create, arrange, tour, and play
their music... but that probably doesn't count for anything, huh?

Anyway, the bootlegging issue as it relates to SG is another issue that
provokes many different points of view. The most idealistic and pure
views are those held by Steve Russell, Caryn, and the like. It takes a
lot of fortitude to take stands such as these. Although I agree with a
lot of the idealistic view, I'm not prepared to say that I will never
buy bootlegs. If I have the opportunity to get a few new songs or a
quality show, then I will take it. In my view, there is a clear
difference between rip off's and reasonable deals. I happen to believe
that MOSH's deal is reasonable in that for a relatively small price, I
will receive a quality product within the same week that I ordered it.
I will always pay more to receive quality goods and services in a timely
manner, rather than wait to possibly get it free... after all time =
money... that's just the way I see it... and that's the essence of a
free market.
Anyway, It's great to see people with strong ideals and beliefs on these
confusing issues, as long as their ideals are not forced on others.
Just because we believe something is right does'nt make it *objectively*
right.

live tapes do EXACTLY the same thing, as well as help create a community
amongst fans, while not PROFITING a piece of low-life scum like a
bootlegger. no one else is entitled to make any money off of
soundgarden's music besides soundgarden. period. and they are entitled
to make as much money as they fucking want to -- it's THEIR MUSIC.

i just finished a multi genre research paper i did on chris cornell (i
titled it- Entering a Screaming Life) and i just wanted to share a sonnet i
wrote becuase i think it's cute.

Chris Cornell has a wonderful voice
He uses it every night on stage
He smokes, and it's gross, but it's his choice
He looks so much younger than his age
His lyrics express some deep, dark feelings
The music he writes means so much to me
I see many different colors in things
When i see him play guitar and sing on t.v.
He makes up a fourth of a really cool band
The other three members are kim, matt and ben
Just one terrific song of his is Burden in my Hand
I saw them in concert and would love to again
Chris Cornell is an absolutely beautiful man
One day I'll meet him, that's a good plan

ta-da! how do you like it? i also wrote some haikus (even though haikus
are supposed to be about nature) and one i thought was exceptionally clever
was:
Down on the Upside,
Ultramega O.K. in
the Superunknown

i had fun doing this project, if you ever need to do a project on a person
go the soundgarden route, they provide great subjects!
in all i wrote four haikus, the sonnet, a letter from chris to susan, a
story from chris's point of view, a letter from me to chris, a non-fiction
story about when i saw SG in concert, a poem, and a eulogy for chris (it
was hard to imagine him dying, but i needed another genre), oh, and i made
a concert poster and a portrait of chris. i think it ended up a good
looking project.

that's all, amanda

Hi Sommesters,

I've been on this list for about 2 weeks,I think its fucking
excellent its got stuff on it that I never wouldn't of known
[i.e. Chris and Susan at the Grammys] about the fork I've got a
poster with Chris wearing it [I wish I had one :)] I heard something
on here that he doesn't wear it or something this poster is from 95
and its got the outside spikes bent out and the middle spike has a
black ball on it.On the Smashing Pumpkins, in Guitar Magazine there
was an article on how SP were getting sick of using Guitars and
wanted to try something different.I haven't heard the new song yet
and If this guitar rumour is true I don't think I will like it much
because all my Musical tastes are to do with Guitars.I play guitar
myself and thats one of the main reasons why I like Soundgarden. The
drumming on 1979 at the grammys sounded like crap, and this is because
it was the same all the way through not even a little fill added.
I am not the biggest SP fan I have seen
them live on TV and I thought it was excellent but now I am becoming
less interested in them.Oh well sorry to blab on about SP anyway
my Fav bands are Soundgarden [duh! :)] , Pearl Jam ,The Tea
Party,Green River , Mother Love Bone,RHCP,TOTD and the legendary Jimi
Hendrix.I'm sorry this was so long and if anyone wants to flame me
about this post please send E-mail to: sanity@satech.net.au I don't
want to flood the list with arguments.
Anyway thank you seth for creating such an excellent list.
bye
