Soundgarden Blows In Windy City Set
Attitude And Bluster Sink Aragon Ballroom Show

Soundgarden can't help it. No matter how much they rail against it, no
matter their punk roots, their very existence-- sludgy, bludgeoning, and
loud--suggests a '70's metal band, clich=E9s, bloat, and all, waiting to
happen. Their show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom Saturday night (Nov. 9)=
 was
full of big, blustery arena rock gestures, some of which were their fault
(smashing guitars, throwing microphone stands), some of which weren't=
 (like
the cigarette lighters lit, en masse, during "Black Hole Sun").=20
A lack of subtlety, though, was the least of their problems.
Soundgarden, despite a recorded body of work that ranks them among the=
 best
acts of the past 15 years, have a spotty reputation live. Truly
transcendent shows are few and far between; most nights the band performs
by rote, acting as if they were, by their mere presence, doing the=
 audience
  a favor.
Saturday night got off to an ominous start when the mostly high-school
aged crowd booed opening act Rocket From The Crypt (who turned in a fine
set, although the Aragon's typically wretched sound didn't help them any).
"They fucking kick my ass, and I didn't even have to pay [to see them]," a
clearly peeved Chris Cornell said pointedly. Bassist Ben Shepherd then=
 gave
the audience the finger, and it was all downhill from there.=20
Despite a few moments of near- perfection-- a stripped- down "Black=
 Hole
Sun," performed by Cornell, solo, that fed into a frenetic,
microphone-smashing "Outshined," as well as glorious versions of "Rusty
Cage" and "Pretty Noose"--the band's consistent refusal to connect with
their audience on any level keeps them from being truly great, and always
  will.=20
Disturbing trend alert: "Burden in my Hand" was accompanied by a video
montage with images like the word "enemy" superimposed over a picture of
Bill Clinton. The sheer awkward purposelessness of the video suggests that
Soundgarden might be better off leaving the demagoguery to the similarly
humor- impaired Rage Against the Machine.=20

Good Morning, 6 am....
The Chris pic.
Specifically, THIS kick ass pic (Thank you Seth)
http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/images/spin1.jpg.
This has to be my favorite-ist picture of Chris Cornell.
I want a goddam poster of it! There doesnt seem to be one in existance. KOTS
is no help.
So because I am so obsessed (in love, whatever) with this band, yesterday I
dig out that issue of SPIN (Sept 92), wrote them a letter, asked if they
could please tell me how to get ahold of the photographer who shot this
particular pic. Then if that all goes well, Im gonna beg him to make it a
poster. Would any of you guys want a poster of this?
To me, this picture speaks 10,000 words. It almost literally sums up my
whole feelings about Soundgarden.

And while I was up at 3:30 this am thinking about all this shit, I wondered
if I will ever actually get a poster of it. If I make a good effort and bug
some people, maybe and maybe we all can get one.

Do you think there is a chance in hell??? Ive never done this before.

Subject: Corgan v. Cornell

It can easily be said that Billy Corgan and Chris Cornell are two of the
greatest song writers of our time. That is an opinion and I don't think I
will get much heat for writting it in a place like this. You can say
Cornell is more talented than Corgan, or you can say it the other way
around. The fact still remains that having more than just one songwriter
brings out the best music in everyone. It's the reason why bands
originate. Bush were just four guys who met on a painting gig and now their
at the altar of Alternative music. (Forgive me, if someone out there does
not like Bush, but I am just giving an example).
	THIS IS AN OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The music may be there for us and maybe it is not. Either way, I think that
anyone who is a loyal Soundgarden fan can dig some other bands music such
as the Pumpkins and still be the same as they were before. This competition
among some songwriters is very good. If there's one thing we cannot lose
in this world it is good music. Soundgarden heals my soul whenever it is
torn, and goes with me whenever I am lost.

Boo hoo...sniff sniff...

Our Shroomy is getting older. . .may you get everything you wish for on
your birthday...(like 30 days on a desert island with nothing but a
scantily clad Chris Cornell, a can of whipped cream, a jar of orange
marmalade, two spanking paddles, 10 feet of rope, and a radio that plays
nothing but Soundgarden stuff. . .God love ya!

One FINAL word (from me anyway) regarding Corgan/Cornell. . .the only
way I feel anyone has the right to say that Chris is the "best"
writer/poet or that Billy is the "most personal" writer poet is if you
have read and listened to every lyric ever written by every artist in
the history of music. Now this may sound a little simplistic, but I can
NEVER say that anyone or anything is the "best" because there is ALWAYS
someone or something out there that can do things better. I can voice
that in my experience (as limited or extensive as it may be) that they
are GOOD, but the best? Come on . . .
	H O W E V E R . . . I do feel that Chris is a fantastic writer from
what reading experience I have. The more you read/listen/dissect, the
more critical you become of someone's work. This also means that you
will usually become more appreciative of a GOOD body of work, whatever
good signifies. Just my opinion, read, agree, disagree, or delete.

Love you all

Here is what I think < /me sees everyone yawning...>

Music and lyrics are both important, and how it all fits together are
really imprtant. I do listen to lyrics, but dumb lyrics can be
overcome by a good song. And yes, sometimes an average song can
become great through great lyrics. I think we should all admit there
are some SG lyrics we dig, even if we are clueless to their meaning.
There are some fucking powerful lines out there, like "Down in a
hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load."
Love it or hate it, it's VERY STRONG! I also think the lyrics in
Slaves and Bulldozers are pretty powerful, both in content and
delivery (of course, the music is just as powerful). And what would
Ty Cobb be without "Hard headed, fuck you all!" It's really how the
whole package comes together...

Over and out,

Why are we having this debate between Cornell and Corgan? Let's face
it..both artists are extremely talented and they are the best at what
they do. Factually, we cannot say that one is better than the other;
it is purely opinion. So to anyone else who has a "Billy sucks"

debate is cool, but trashing other bands for the sake of making some

I think our reviews to this list all summer/fall have reflected that
sometimes the band does not play up to the expectations of fans. We had
people who critiqued shows and were honest about either the music, singing,
stage presence or whatever being off. The Saturday night show this reviewer
talked about was not the best one I saw on this tour. Had he/she come back
to the Aragon on Sunday night they would of seen a totally different
concert. That is the problem I have with concert reviews. They will pick a
night to go see a band and than review only that one. If a band has an off
night(which let's face it that is going to happen) than they are branded
with a bad review. Also critics are people and some of them have
preconceived notions about bands. If a friend asked me to go to a concert
with them and it is a band that I really don't care for. 9 times out of 10 I
am not going to come away converted. Sometimes it happens but not often. My
friend is going to enjoy the show a hell of alot more than I am. I think it
would be hard to be objective about music/a band that I don't personally like.

I don't know about any body else but I felt pretty connected. Where
was this person anyway?? Those of you that were in the pit that night did
you feel connected to the band at all?? I was in the balcony and they
reached me!
I guess this reviewer must subscribe to the Mrs Cornell school of psychic
feelings....he knows that Soundgarden never will be "truly great"!!
I am not a blind(or deaf) avid fan of Soundgarden I realize they are not
perfect. I cringed every concert when they went into Pretty Noose but I do
know that when they are "on" there is nothing like the thrill of the music
and the experience of seeing them live no matter what any reviewer, magazine
or DJ say. toni

For anyone who has the PJ Starr compilation video or have taped ABC'S "In
Concert" thing (it was aired in '94 I think), then you will know what I'm
talking about. During the interview with Matt and Kim, they're showing
clips of SG playing. (Note: On the PJ Starr compilation video it says the
interview was in '92 and it could have been, but the performances were
probably '94 because Chris had short hair and they were playing songs like
"Spoonman" and "The Day I Tried To Live.") Anyway, to my point. I read in
an article where Chris said he was trying to quit smoking when they were
making Superunknown, so he was chewing tobacco instead. This obviously did
not work out. :) As we all know, when someone tries to quit smoking they
tend to gain weight. Well check out Chris onstage during "In Concert!" He
is by no means overweight, but compared to his normal size, he's FAT! I
couldn't believe it when I saw him! Big tummy! Pecs not what would be
considered "well-shaped." Just a bit on the flabby side. He still looked
good in all, but we've all talked about how he's lost weight, and he
definitely has, so I thought it would be kinda cute to mention Chris when he
was a bit on the chubby side. :)

May Soundgarden be with you.

Yes, and this whole argument is subjective... like arguing over which is
the best flavor of ice cream... people are different, they like
different things... There is no right answer to this argument, so it can
go on forever to no fruition...

My opinion -> Granted both are great lyricists, the definitive factor
for me is the *vocals*... I just can't swallow Corgan's vocals, no
matter how great/personal the words are. I tend to prefer Cornell's
vocals whether he is singing 'Big Bottom' or 'Mary had a Little Lamb'...

Doesnt Seth's page have a bootleg discography that rates the cd's and
video's. I could have swore I seen it. Any ways I think bootlegs are
great. Though some do suck and others are copies of ones that have been

really the prob. Happy Birthday to Shroomy, even though I do not know her.

I almost positive that Chris got sued for hitting someone. I think I read it
in an old article. I'll have to dig it out and see. But I have no idea
about Ben. Probably someone got offended when he spit on them or something
stupid like that.

I was wondering yesterday, if any of the members of SG have themselves sued
anyone? Over lyrics, sampling, invasion of privacy, etc. I've never heard
anything about it, but it'd be interesting to know...

Subject: Re: SG bootleg dilemma

I think it's safe to say that anyone who's willing to shell out the money
for a bootleg is a true fan of the band. And as a true fan, it's likely
that he or she already owns the official album releases. He or she may
have even seen the band in concert several times. Someone who doesn't
already have "Badmotorfinger" isn't going to go out and buy "Crown of
Thorns," right? That's just not the way it works.

Like I said, the only people who buy bootlegs are the true fans who have
already bought the albums. Why? The boots are *way* more expensive than
the albums, and the sound quality is usually *much* worse. But if you're
a big enough fan, boots are a great thing to own. If you've already got a
copy of "Badmotorfinger" and are presented with an opportunity to buy
"Crown of Thorns," you wouldn't say "Nah, I think I'll just buy a second
copy of 'Badmotorfinger,'" right? The band isn't losing any money due to
boot trade because those who are buying the boots have already bought the
official stuff.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't think anyone purchases
bootlegs in order to bypass having to buy an official release. The price is
too high and the sound is too bad. The reason for boots, as I see it, is
to supplement the collections of those who have *already* purchased the
official material and concert tickets. Their money has already gone to
the band. Thus, the band really isn't losing any money due to the
circulation of boots. Sorry to be so long-winded. And this is all IMHO,
of course. :)

I jsut caught the last half of Muchmusic's the New Music and yes there was
Soundgarden on there. They talked about how Soundgarden did that Molson
Blind Date thingy and they also showed clips from BUTOW at the end. I
didn't see the beginning so since it will be playing again at 12h30, I'm
going to try to catch the first half (as well as tape the wee bit 'o SG
content that they had ;).

Whoops. I meant "complement," not "supplement." I still get those mixed
up. I just don't think anyone views boots as a replacement for the
official releases. . .

Hey List

Somewhere in here... there is some SG content...somewhere... :-)

Oh yeah...to any Buffalo sommsters (all 2 of us) _Down Under on the Upside_
can be found (1 copy $22.99) at that weird record store on Main St...New
World Records, I think...the one that just got robbed and riddled with
bullets :-)

Anyway...I'm going to Cleveland this weekend to spend some quality RnR time
in the Flats, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and maybe even a Cav's game (that
I have tickets to) :-) I was informed that the Hall of Fame doesnt allow
camera's inside (which totally sucks) cuz I was gonna take some pics of the
Seattle exhibit for da page.

Vikki (un)fortunately *hand wrote* (http://carpeltunnel.org) the SUB POP
contract with SG (hmmm...gotta watch out with the SG initials...some loser
might say "you into Spice Girls") and I was hoping to snap a pic of the
contract and the exhibit...maybe I can sneak in a camera :-) Disposables
will pass a metal detector? No?

I'm wondering if any Cleve-landers can recommend any cool indie/vinyl stores
in downtown Cleveland? 700+ people on this list...someone must live in
Cleveland :-) There is one major thing missing in my SG collection ....and
I know it can be found in Cleveland :-)

I've checked Pollstar and the only band playing Saturday night is Sheryl
Crow and Dishwalla...um...is there any other place in the Flats to check
out? I don't see anything listed for Peabody's or the Aragon.

Saturday (before, after and maybe during the game :-) I'll be at the Irish
bar at the end of flats where it curves towards the mistake on the lake :-)
...If you're in the neighborhood...stop by and have a Guiness (or 2 :-) **lol**

There are 3 SG sound clips and 4 photos at http://sonicignition.com --
if you use their "Subsonic" entry, the link to one of the photos is
duplicated, so you'll have to view it directly at
http://sonicignition.com/Soundgarden/Soundgarden04.jpg.

Kim makes an interesting point in one of the clips: he doesn't believe
that what Soundgarden does, whilst not ugly, can be called fine
art. He says that rock music is part of a folk genre, and as such is
not fine art...

absolutely, and i absolutely agree with you.

but... having said that, i made a conscious decision last year to *stop*
buying cd bootlegs, and instead to focus on tape trading. tape trading of
live shows is different in my mind because there is no money changing hands.
it's not paying $30 and up to someone *else*.

i know, it's a fine line. but with an audio tape and an honest trader, i
don't see how sg is being hurt. no one profits; yes, they don't have
control over what's released, etc etc etc., but at least no one is profiting.

bootlegs are often of dubious quality, they get the song titles wrong, they
often aren't the shows they say they are, etc etc etc, all those things
s.russell pontificated upon last week. and so many people trade tapes these
days, and a great majority of them will copy tapes at cost, or 2:1. so i'm
trying to move forward, not back. and i understand that there isn't the
tape trader network for sg like there is for someone like pj, and that there
are shows that i won't hear unless i hear the cd... that's fine. i'll live.
(i think ;->)

so no, the band isn't losing any money, but i don't think that bootleggers
(who are always pond scum) are entitled to make money off of someone else's
art. period. they have brought nothing to it besides the ability to sneak
a tape recorder into the show, and so what? so what. i'm not going to
support them if i can possibly help it...

but that's just my $.02, and i know other people feel strongly in the other
direction. just offering a differing perspective.

The only soundgarden picture I saw was a humurous one with them standing
