From Kerrang, March 1st 1997

"Soundgarden Drummer 'Nicked' By Prodigy

"Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron could be a surprise guest on the
long-awaited new album from The Prodigy.

"When the two bands shared the bill on the recent mega Australian festival
tour Big Day Out, Prodge whizzkid computer/keyboard bloke Liam Howlett was
so impressed with Cameron's tub thumping that he arranged to sample him one
night, with the Soundgarden skinbasher's full approval."

Also in Kerrang this week is Morat's interview with Chris where he asks him
questions Kerrang readers really want to know. It's a very upbeat and funny
interview (you're right Carolyn, Oz seems to agree with them) No news on the
tattoo, but the famous fork, immortalised on Dena's tee shirts, was given to
him by Shannon Hoon - and he stopped wearing it when Shannon died. I'll be
getting the full article over to Seth etc etc

Subject: shows

I just have to put in my 2 cents. Granted when SG played the Patriot Center
here in DC, it wasn't as large as the Arena or the Capital Center etc... But
personally I think the Patriot Center is huge. I know it will never ever be
possible but I want to see SG play somewhere much smaller and more intimate,
like Black Cat in DC or the new 9:30, or the "new" 9:30 in Baltimore,
Bohager's. I really don't understand why SG can't play smaller shows and
just have more of them. I think they might not make enough money off it.
But don't you guys think that SG would have more fun playing to a crowd in a
more club type setting than these huge arenas? To be totally honest, I
almost didn't go see SG in concert because I cannot stand the crowds at these
big shows. For me it pretty much ruins the entire experience. Okay, okay,
SG was fantastic, but the only reason the crowds didn't annoy me at the last
show was because not that many people were there, it wasn't really packed.

To Lissa B & everyone else griping about paying big bucks for shows: In
Australia, a ticket to a big concert (at a venue that might hold 8 000
people - that's a pretty big concert here in Perth!!!) you can expect to pay
up to $70 for a ticket. I just paid $63 for KISS tickets, and the small SG
show (about 4 500 people) was $40 a ticket. We also pay loads more for cds
($30 Aust), the same for videos, etc, etc. Spare a thought next time...

I'm no expert in rock history here, but if I remember correctly, Shannon
died sometime in 1995 (Fall... October I think), yet Chris still continued
to wear it after that. Yes, in fact our very own Eliza touched this fork
during the Chicago Sommsfest ;-)

Subject: The Official Word on the Breakup

Okay, okay, THIS is the official word on the Soundgarden Breakup:

It was recently leaked from Silver Management that Ben Shepherd has left
the band to join Liz Taylor's brain tumor on an intergalactic trip to
another planet. It was also released that in fact HE is the killer of
Jonbenet and will reveal the burial site of Jimmy Hoffa after he has
departed the planet. Following this were confirmations that Ben is
actually the head of the New World Order and that he was the mastermind
in the government plan to genetically engineer the AIDS virus. As if
this weren't enough, Mr. Shepherd admitted to being the UNABOMBER and
that his father was the man hanging in the tinman scene in the wizard of
Oz!
That's some phenominal shit, huh?
I think I read it in Rollingstone in an unauthorized story somewhere.
Or maybe I heard it on MTV.

BTW,
I know I asked this over Christmas, but I never got a coherent response.
I was listening to Ultramega Ok and was surprised to hear Sonic Youth's
"Death Valley 69" at the end. What the hell is this? Does anyone know
for sure? I've gotten plenty of speculation considering they were
recording with SST, and SST is mentioned in plenty of Sonic Youth
material, BUT I've never heard any specific Sonic Youth references from
Soundgarden.
Thanks,
Chris

No it's not the Soundgarden freshener or the petrified chicken mcnugget -
it's the last of the smell of 8 hot, sweaty, crazed people in winter coats

<For starters, I think DOTU is a very good album compared to

<on the album where I can feel their power (Never the Machine Forever,
<Burden in My Hand, Overfloater, etc.) but it is nothing close to the
<power that Superunknown, Badmotorfinger, and earlier music created.

There has been much talk over the last year about DOTU in reference to it
not rocking like BMF or SU. Consider this arbitrary selection of songs:
1. Pretty Noose
2. Rhinosaur
3. Ty Cobb
4. Never Named
5. Never the Machine Forever
6. No Attention
7. An Unkind

I think most would agree that these songs rock, and not in a weak way. As
a matter of fact they rock in a very Soundgarden sort of way, and I don't
think one could mistake these songs as being done by any other band. I
would even go as far to challenge folks to privately e-mail me if they can
come up with a release by any other band in the last year that includes
seven songs that rock with the same intensity as those (I realize I'm in
the realm of opinions now, and I fear a flood of e-mail!).

My point is this: BMF rocks differently, not less intensely, than LTL.
SU rocks differently than BMF. DOTU rocks differently than SU...see what I
mean? Everyone has preferences, but I would beg to differ with anyone who
thought the above songs were "weak," even compared with Rusty Cage,
Outshined, Let Me Drown, Gun, etc. If SG released the above seven tunes as
an ep, I doubt many people would be thinking "sell-out" or "wussies." To
me, all of DOTU sounds like Soundgarden (and I personally think songs like
Dusty & Tighter and Tighter rock as hard as the seven above), but there is
a texture to the material that's different than anything they've done thus
far. They've managed to sound fresh, creatively approach songwriting
AND still rock, not an easy task. And to me each album contains those
qualities, albeit the formula is a little different each time. Down on the
Upside strikes me as a brilliant rock and roll album, with plenty of those
sounds and hooks and turns of phrases that drew me to the band in the
first place. And some fresh surprises too. If you don't like it as much
LTL, BMF, or SU, you can surely agree there are inescapably classic
Soundgarden moments on DOTU, can't you?

I'm new to the digest and would like any opinions concerning a topic
that was discussed on the 3/15/96 issue. It was a conversation from
some girl in the MTV arena claiming that Chris Cornell came on to her
against her will at some party. I find this impossible to believe
given all the positive things he has said about his wife Susan and
their marriage. Not to mention his many past comments berating block
head girls like that. One of the things I've always admired about
Chris is that he seemed to steer clear of that sort of cheesy behavior
and I'd hate to think this creepy girl was telling the truth. This
whole incident seems completely out of character for him. What do you
think? Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Well, I'm sort of bummed because I called this place that said they were
supposed to be getting Fresh Deadly Rarities and Stolen Prayer in at the end
of Feb. and found out that all they got was a big fat out-of-print notice.
So much for that. Well, I was just wondering if anyone out there could help
me locate these, whether it be wanting to get rid of them or if you happen to
see these anywhere. I would like to have these, of course along with
BMF/SOMMS but I've about given up on that one. I've called places around
here but I've had no luck. So if you could help me, please let me know. Oh,
on a lighter note, I was walking to class the other day, in the rain no less
(I can't get any breaks around here), and I passed this one car with a lot of
stickers on it's window. Well, I get to the other side of this car and TA-DA
there is this BMF sticker. I thought it was so cool that in all the cars I
could have passed, this one just happen to be there. Well, being the cool
fan that I am( YEA RIGHT), I scribbled a note saying "Cool Soundgarden
Sticker :)" and I left it on their windshield just to let them know that
there are other fans out there. I wish I could find a sticker like that one
to put on my car but I do have one of those static-cling decals displayed on
my windshield. Well, I'll shut up for now. Oh tonight is Grammy night!! I
wonder if the guys will put in an apperance?? Let's hope they do so when
they do those camera shots into the audience, maybe they'll show them. Oh
well, it's just a thought!! Take care and be sweet!!

Stay Cool,

I just saw Chris on the MTV Grammy Preview show. God damn that mans is
fine. He was all dressed up in a tux looking all kinds of sophisticated.
But anyways when I finally calmed down and what he said sinked in I got
really excited all over again. John Norris asked him if SG was going to
take a break or if they were planning on starting to record again. I
was expecting Chris to say the first but he didn't. He said they
planned on starting to record. Now I am confussed. And for a band that
is supposed to be on the verge of breaking up(insert sarcasm here) this
seems a bit odd don't you think. So we can watch the Grammy's and WHEN
THEY WIN we can observe their behavior toward one another and this will
give us a little hint on rather or not any of these rumors are true.
Did I mention that Chris looked great?

Well I go now...

understand all the hype people are giving Moby's remix of Dusty...
I thought it pretty much sucked, especially since it was the only
other track on the single... not worth $8-10 in my opinion... I'd
highly recommend getting it taped off or hearing it somewhere else
to see if you like it before peeling off ten bucks for a CD copy...

The Grammy's are tonite!! yaaye. I will sit through all the misc. crap in
hopes of seeing our beloved Soundgarden maybe win a Grammy, maybe see them if
they have a "thanks" video like nominees have when theyre not there.

Was it the Details article where someone said they thought they saw an
amber light around Chris? And someone else replied he has that effect on
people. I think this is probably very true. Just most people never notice or
are able to see it, or care, or believe it. But I think there is something
really special about him and this whole band. I think we could all agree on
that.

The Machine. But Smashing Pumpkins. Say it ain't so. I suffered
through a whole hour and a half of crap to see the Smashing Pumpkins win
yet another award. This has put a damper on my week for sure. I really
wanted to see Chris all dolled up in his black tux thanking all of the

would never be possible. And inviting everyone of the SOMMS posse to
come over anytime we wanted. OH WELL. I young girl can dream can't

belief.

Even though I didn't get to see Chris on stage accepting the well
deserved Grammy him and the boys should have gotten, atleast Chris said
that they were going to be going into the studio and not taking a
break.(this info came right from the horses mouth on MTV) I hope this is
true only if the boys arn't fighting because if they are they need a

find it funny to see how fickle some of the people on this list really are.
Am I the only one who remembers a few months age or last year when the new
album came out? You know, how everybody was making posts about how Ben was
a big improvement to the band, how he contributed to the albums all that
other praise.
Now all of a sudden, just because of some bloody RUMOR (that is all it is
folks!!!) , everybody is saying how they never really liked Ben anyway and
that he should leave the band. None of us really knows what's going on
with the band, and if they want it to stay their buisiness we should
respect that instead of panicking and comming up with all sorts of
conclusions. For all we know, the "big argument" that supposedly occured
at the last show could've been about patch cords or something.
They've only been on vacation for two weeks and rumors and stories are
flying everywhere. It's going to be pretty funny to read some of the posts

Sorry you misunderstood me. I didn't say that *anarchism* is
disorder, I said that *anarchy* is, by one definition. I know that
anarchism is a recognized political theory, one which I agree w/
to an extent. But I won't get into politics. Anyway, when I said
that so-called "anarchists" go around complaining about the gov't
but don't do a thing to improve it, I was talking about the ones
that I know personally, I wasn't speaking for anarchists in general.
I apologize if I unintentionally offended any anarchists out there,

Hey...

Tonight's the night - *the Grammys*!!!
Well, I know that they really don't matter, they're no indication of
talent - Celine Dion being nominated for record of the year is proof
of that - but I can't be completely indifferent to them - when your
favorite band is nominated for something you want them to win.
And "Pretty Noose" has got to - there's no denying it's the best.
I just hope they'll be there... do you think they will? I'd be
uncomfortable going to something like that too, but I really do want
to see them there, just so I can think to myself - "Hey, there's my
favorite band, a thousand times better than all those others, on tv, in
front of an audience of millions, the best." :)

And oh yeah - I just wanted to say one last thing to Vince:
It was amusing for a while, but now it's getting sort of boring.
Let's cut it out and move on, okay?

That's all for now. . .

This may seem weird coming from a big Soundgarden fan but i think that
Bullet with Butterfly Wings is better then Pretty Noose.
The fact that lately the singles released are usually not the best songs
on the albums, especially the first singles, have cost them the award
(I don't think they're stressing
over that). Now if Burden in my Hand or Tighter & Tighter lost to BWBW
then i would be upset.
If you have read the incident with Kim that caused Billy to cry you would
know that is isn't a big feat to achieve.

PS I'm sorry for calling Ben a dickhead earlier on. It was correctly
pointed out by fellow Sommsters that i do not know him and shouldn't
pass judgement on him. I was still a bit pissed off at him for ruining
Jesus Christ Pose live by not bothering to play it. It wont happen again
