I agree with you Jamie...*but* I think it is interesting to note that the
latest Soundgarden single was released with a Moby remix (which i
absolutely *love*)....everyone can disagree with me, but this is not
something I think SG would have done 5 years ago....techno and that funky
sound are definitely huge right now, and they have gone down that road,
even if just a little bit......for me, it is great, because the diversity
of SG is what has kept me obsessed for so many years...

Well...

Soundgarden recorded a *live* show for MTV Europe's "Live&Loud", I don't
remember when it was aired but the songs they played were:

1. Spoonman
2 (or 3). Mailman
3 (or 2). BUTOW
4. BHS

Spoonman was not *very* good, BUTOW a little better, Mailman kicked MAJOR
ass and BHS was listenable.

E-mail me personally and I might be able to get you a few soundclips
(.wav) from this show.

The key words here is "What they damn well please" - if that means they
will do a whole album in techno they will. But I think they will do it
because they want to. Consider also that the remix is just that a remix -
it was not done as an original. The same with the Johnny Cash version of
"Rusty Cage". Does this mean they are going country. No it means that
someone else liked the song and did it in their fashion. So Soundgarden
puts out their sound and the world makes it over in their style. I see
nothing wrong with that.... Unless I hear Slaves & Bulldozers as elevator
music!!!

What you said about SG's SNL performance didn't bother me at all Lorraine.
Like you said, that is your opinion. And it is in my humble opinion that
Chris's voice sucked that night. Where do you get off telling me that I didn't
appreciate Chris's effort that night? Look, I am not a blind puppethead fan..if
SG does something I don't like songwise or whatever, I have no problem in
saying so. I realize that Chris gave 100% that night. But, God bless him, his
voice wasn't ready for whatever reason, hence the subpar performance. But if
you think he did a good job, more power to you. However, does this mean
that I couldn't appreciate or understand his performance? No. All I did
was critique it. Don't sit here and try to analyze what I may or may not
be thinking Lorraine and don't test my loyalty. Don't be ignorant.

Though Johnny Cash's version of Rusty Cage has become the most
well-known of Soundgarden covers, it may not be the most bizarre.
Black Hole Sun seems to be a favorite among those who are looking for
something to cover (hell, even Chris Cornell covers the original), so
if you've heard the version from The Moog Cookbook, it might be time
to check out 2 more (these will be converted to AU format and added to

Subject: down under on the upside

Hey all,

I got Down Under on the Upside over the weekend from the supercool sommster
herself, Georgia. Here's what I think. If you are into SG collectibles, this
really is a must-have in my opinion. The way it is packaged is also very
cool. Since I didn't feel like buying the Burden in My Hand single, a few of
these songs were new to me. Here is what I thought:

1) Jerry Garcia's Finger - I had a tape of this song before, but listening to it
again makes me wonder why Soundgarden even bothered. It seems (along with A
Slice of Spacejam) like a waste of time. It is not bad but I don't think it's
worthy enough to put on recordings.

2) Karaoke - This was a new song for me. I have to say that it is not bad.
The guitar riff in the beginning and is played throughout gets a little
boring but when Chris get's into the melody ("You can feel it in your bones")
I thought it was really great. Overall I liked it.

3) Bleed Together - Wow. I really liked this song. Listening to it made
me wonder why it wasn't put on DOTU. I think it is easily one of the better
SG songs out there. The beginning was very un-SG like..it almost sounded like
they were doing a cover song. But I love the main melody. That is classic
SG right there when Chris starts wailing. I loved it. If this is the new
direction that SG might be taking when it comes to their next album, I don't
think I would mind at all.

4) Birth Ritual (demo) - This was also the first time I had heard the
demo version of this song. I thought it was very interesting. Chris's voice
is *really* straining in some parts but not in that SNL-Pretty-Noose-way.
I loved the Singles version and I like this demo.

5) Fell on Black Days (video version) - We have all heard this by now. It
was cool then and is great now.

6) Dusty (Moby mix) - Ahh. Words can not describe how wonderful this version
is. I agree with Seth..this version is a little better than the original.
To anyone who hasn't heard this yet, you really need to do yourself a
favor and check it out. I hope that for the next SG single, they put all
3 Moby mixes of Dusty on it. Hey, if NIN and Depeche Mode can do it, why
not SG..

Anyway, that is what I thought about Down Under on the Upside. Any
comments (especially about Karaoke and Bleed Together) are appreciated.

I was also curious if there was a song that soundgarden has not been able to
play live at their shows because they might not be able to create the same
kind of sound that the original song has, or if it's just too hard for them
to play live. And, how long have they usually played during their concerts?
Did they play anything from their early days with subpop?

That is so TRUE. I have never met SG (Although I would sell my soul to ;-),
but my brother met ALL of them (Yes, when he told me, I WAS pissed... :), and
he said he was really surprised because Ben was really nice and polite and he
knew Ben had a bad rep. Needless to say, I did get autographs. ;-)
Wooohooo!! And as for Ben leaving the band... He is a MAJOR part of
Soundgarden, without him, Soundgarden just wouldn't be Soundgarden. Sure,
he's got a short fuse... but can't we just overlook that and focus on his
talents? After all, at least the guy is *honest*. :)

I imagine that jason didn't work out simply because he was too
butt-rock. he definitely looks the part of hair-farmer in the videos for
'loud love' and 'hands all over' (just about the only constructive things
he was ever involved in with the band), and I don't think that would have
gone down well with chris, kim or matt. don't forget that he was also
bounced from nirvana at some point in their early history and is now out
of music altogether (as far as I know).

I don't want to devalue somebody's worth as a musician or
otherwise, but jason everman was imho very much an abberation. the band
was about to tour for their first release on a major label and they needed
someone to fill hiro's spot quickly. jason just happened to be in the
right place at the right time. in the end, however, the decision to bring
him in was wrong. he didn't add anything to the band and just wasn't the
man for the job.

I'm sure this isn't a newsflash to anyone, but keep in mind that
'dusty' wasn't the first soundgarden song to be remixed. chris was quick
to point that out to richard kingsmill here on australian radio recently.

in a related note, vince commented on how b-sides like 'jerry
garcia's finger' and 'slice of space jam' were a waste of time. I pretty
much agree, if only that it is a waste of our time to buy the respective
singles just for those tracks (there is a small chance that the band had
fun recording these, but I doubt it) . I think the remixes are somewhat
like that - filler material. both kim and chris have voiced their
unwillingness (for want of a better word) to record or release new songs
as b-sides for single releases; arguing that their albums are so long that
new material really isn't necessary or even fair to them, chris making
super-clear that it was european record companies who have always put on
the squeeze for "unreleased tracks". I think that in the case of the
instrumentals, remixes and rehashed live tracks we've seen included on the
last couple of singles, the band are offering "fillers" because they don't
want to give away what might be considered real songs.

consequently, it looks like the band will be saving any material
they have left over or have since written for their next full-length
release. as much as we all want new songs every couple of months, it
looks like we won't be getting them <shrugging and pointing to impending
releases from hater and wwc>...

...and for those of you who have read this far: please go directly
to the wwc homepage and take a look at the possible cover art for
_declaration of conformity_ by the man himself, tad dameron. any bets on
who is featured in the first image, left to right? <rekindling old debate>

song do you get stuck in your head most often? I usually don't get any
particular one in there, but does anyone here have one that drives them
bug-poopie all day long because they can't get it out...?

I was thinking toady, why doesn't every person attracted to men love
Soundgarden? I mean, screw to B-band (we won't mention their name =) composed
of a bunch of really ugly, talentless guys and one mediocre-looking lead
singer. Soundgarden has a guy from four different categories of guys - tall,
thin and pale (my favorite =), tall, dark and handsome, tall, furry and
funny, and tall, sandy-haired and absolutely fucking adorable. They're all
handsome men, they all have both sexy personalities and bodies, their talent
is mind-boggling, and they're just great guys who make great music. What's
not to love?????? =)

Sorry to all of those who actually like Bush, I'm not trying to offend you.
I'm just describing them in comparison to Soundgarden. =)

For starters, I think DOTU is a very good album compared to
everything else out there. But does anyone else feel like this album is
less than what they are capable of? I mean there are a couple of songs
on the album where I can feel their power (Never the Machine Forever,
Burden in My Hand, Overfloater, etc.) but it is nothing close to the
power that Superunknown, Badmotorfinger, and earlier music created. I
hate to put it this way but, are they wussing out? Are they getting too
old to rock?! I certainly hope not and shutter to even think this but
thier next album has to be less about form and complexity (Switch opens)
and more about what they do best (kicking some major ass!!!!!) And
where do they get off not putting Bleed Together on DOTU. This has to
be without a doubt one of their best songs ever and is the microcosism
of everything they should be striving for in their next album. I'll
shut up now and return to antisocial status.

went to see metallica last night, and i don't know if anyone else has gone,
or is going, but it was awesome. the thing that was really impressive was
the stage setup. it was like nothing i have seen or even heard of. the stage
was centered in the middle of the floor, with the pit all around it. there
were two stages,. one was nearly circular, with some weird shaped
outcroppings and steps and stuff, and the other was shaped like one of those
old guitars bodies from the eighties metal bands, the ones like cc deville
from poison used to play, shaped kind of like a very angular tooth, for lack
of a better description. anyway, my point (read: sg content) is - do you
think that this is the way concerts will go in a lot of cases, or is this
going to be something unique here? it worked extremely well for both
metallica and corrosion of conformity, and i think it would be a great setup
for SG. the way that ben likes to move around while he plays, it would allow
all of themn better contact with the crowd. it even allows for the members
to get right up to the crowd while still playing, and it just plain makes
for a more entertaining show. i know it would only work for the stadium-type
shows, but that is what SG is doing now anyway.

Oh Gawd, that means I have to listen to the moron just to hear
Soundgarden?? I guess I will suffer through it tommorrow morning and find
out. Unless someone else can stomach Mancow for 4 or 5 hours...Ben, Dave,
Medium Joe ..... someone..ANYONE!! I can't imagine Mancow interviewing
them although I'll bet Kim and Matt could give him a run for his money. And
if he likes their music he will be relatively nice to them. His sidekick
is named "Turd" if that gives you an indication of the type of show we are
talking here!! toni

All this talk about how great or bad Ben has been for the
band is really irrelevant. If Ben left the band now, I doubt that
they would continue as Soundgarden, for they have truly become
a cohesive unit. The sum is greater than the parts. If they
did choose to go on without Ben, then they would be Soundgarden
and , just as SG fans had to cope when Hiro left(though they
were far fewer in number), we would have to cope. Maybe you
wouldn't listen to SG anymore, maybe you would...does it matter?
What happens between them is something that is out of our hands,
and all this pro-Ben/anti-Ben discussion is just a big headache now.

Besides, who said that Soundgarden was gonna break up?

Do you really think SG is going for the large stadium concerts? The three
concerts I was at last year were not your big arena's. Here in DC
Metallica is playing at the US Air arena big old place that was used by
rock bands in the 70's and 80's like the Rolling Stones, Led Zep, David
Bowie (am I showing my age - no comments from you Toni!). It is the show
place for larger than life rock bands - those who are trying to pull in
large crowds. You know the type of place where you can get seats that the
performers on the stage look like ants and you have to watch a video screen
to see what is going on down on stage. Soundgarden played at a local
University center when they were here. I really think they would prefer
the small places over the large arenas. IMHO!!!

Don't think it won't happen. I remember walkin in to a Roy Roger's
"restaurant" some time ago and hearing a Muzak-ed version of Jethro Tull's
Locomotive Breath...

As to the real point of the original post (that was, regarding how things
seemed to have softened up on the radio), I remember a post by someone
about a year ago (Caryn?) talking about how music tends to get darker in
times of social unrest (i.e. wars, recession, etc.) Taking that as a
guide, it would seem to make sense. Think about the atmosphere here in the
States during the late '80s and early '90s. The economy started slumping,
all the changes in eastern Europe, and all of the sudden we were involved
in the Gulf War. Since then, we've started getting cheap oil from the
middle east again, unemployment is low, and the music seems to have taken a
more mellow turn (well, with the exception of Tool.) SG, PJ, Live, even
Metallica have toned down their approach recently. Now, maybe what we need
is a nice little war to break out somewhere... (No, not really.)

I've wondered this about a couple of songs. I always wanted to hear Limo
Wreck and Superunknown live. It seems that these songs are quite
vocally demanding. Also, Limo Wreck seems like a hard song to play live
because it's rythym is so technical and melodic...

I think all Chris would have to do is summon the demons he sold his soul to
for that voice...the others wouldn't have a prayer...

Hello everyone...

Well here is the latest poll results of who would win in a fight between
any of the members.
Ben got 3 votes
Chris got 2 votes
Matt got 1 vote
Kim got 0 votes
Susan got 2 votes
Not as many people contributed as hoped but I thought those people that
did would like the results. Or maybe not. I have no life I know this.
I go to school, come home and usually find myself drawn to this damn
computer.

I just read 4 days of SOMMS digests. I can see both sides of the Ben
thing. I agree that Ben is sometimes, who am I kinding, most of the
time, rude and just down right mean. And that the band is probley upset
about his on stage antics. But getting rid of him will only cause more
problems and also put a spin on the best god damn band in the universe.
Look what happened last time they tried to replace a bass player. They
got Jason Everman(what a gimp). Ben is a great asset to the band. Hell
he is the band. SG without any of the members just wouldn't be the same.
And who is to say that Ben is the problem....Maybe one day out of the
kindness of their hearts one of the members will sit down and answer all
our questions.

But anyways, hope everyone had a great weekend...

I WILL SEE A SG CONCERT. I WILL SEE A SG CONCERT. I WILL SEE A SG
CONCERT. I WILL SEE A SG CONCERT. I WILL SEE A SG CONCERT.

My friend just paid $45.00 for a Metallica concert. At first I told him
he is out of his mind but when I thought about it I would pay what ever
I had to just to see SG.

Hey all,

I'm a first time poster here, though I've been secretly been
reading all the mail I get <sniker>...but I really wanna get this off
my chest. I think that FOPP is the best Soundgarden song ever! From
the starting guitar riffs to the end chorus...it kicks ASS!!! If only
Hiro came back for one song...it would have to be FOPP!! And if you
ask me...I think it would sound pretty funky acoustically...but SG
ain't funky...

Another gripe I have is...those idiots at Muchmusic (Canada's
MTV) don't play ANY SG...that really pisses me off, first when BUTOW
came on...I saw about 5 and that was it..no more BUTOW..and it's a
wicked video...it's a basic metophor for all the media's impact on
society that send us propaganda to make us convinced that what THEY
say is right. Although it can also be a vid on two doctors messing
with CC's mind. :)

Till next time..

e-mail M2& Patt Minfield I mean Matt Pinfield of 120 minutes fame, asking
him to play JCP. After all they played a little bit of it while SG were
