Hey all,

I had to unsubscribe from the list for a while so I'm a little out of
it. I don't know if this has been asked, but in the video Scrape by
Unsane I swear that if the bass player isn't Ben it must be his twin. So
does Ben have anything to do with Unsane? I tried to search for info on
this in the list archive but didn't find any.

Also to Kenny/Lisa B. who wrote the story about meeting the "ignorant"
AIC fan when they commented on an SG shirt, maybe the reason they didn't
recognize Stan Layne as AIC's lead singer is because the lead singer of
AIC is Layne Staley!

From: Deborah Baker <deborah@rustycage.u-net.com>
Subject: Soundgarden split (the probable story?)

UKDeb is back to her normal self after being posessed by the spirit of 15
year old Glen Fiddich :-).....

The day Soundgarden *officially* announce they are splitting is the day I
will beleive it. Okay so they *may* not be each others favourite people at
the moment so they are doing the sensible thing and taking a break. They
*know* they have something special so they are making the right moves to
preserve it.

Remember, Ben has always been psycho. When he joined the band I believe lots
of people in Seattle thought they were mad to take him on. They have also
admitted that at least three of them are moody/volatile/aggressive and get
into fights (some of which they provke)- although not with each other
necessarily. Look at that recent bundle between Chris, Ben and Rocket From
the Crypt (any goss on that one, Aussie sommsters?)

After the Superunknown tour there were rumours here in Europe that Ben was
unhappy with the musical direction and was leaving. Chris later laughed it
off, but there's no smoke without fire, y'know!

And if he did leave that wouldn't necessarily mean the end of the band
(sorry, Benlover but it's true). In fact, I am sure it wouldn't! Yes, they
have made brilliant music with Ben and I am not dissing his contribution to
the band in any way, but that's not to say they wouldn't have continued to
do so if Hiro had stayed. Or they'd got someone else on bass (I'm ignoring
Everman here). And Chris once said that if Hiro hadn't decided to leave they
would have fired him anyway.

So I guess is what I'm saying is, if the Kim/Ben spat was anything more than
pre-menstrual tension (these sex changes are tricky things ;-)), trust them
to work it out and try not to worry.

soundgarden.sgi.net! Yeah, you may think it's boring, but it's
important to me to have the word "soundgarden" in the URL somewhere,
even though I loved some of the other suggestions (thanks, everyone).

So forget about in-one-ear-and-out-your-mother.sgi.net.

The move to the new address could happen as soon as this weekend,
though as I'm sure some of you have noticed, the site is still missing
pieces. We got back the World Tour and Song Of The Month sections, but
we have no Releases section and 90% of the video clips have
disappeared. I'll keep everyone posted on the move (the site will
still be accessible via the current URL -- you'll be automatically
redirected to the right place).

Alright Everybody!

Here's my opinion on the Soundgarden battle. Can you imagine being with
the same people over and over again. Sure, they may be your best friends,
but wouldn't you get sick of them after awhile. Of course, you need to
take a breather, especially after being on such a long tour. I'm sure the
tension was heavy, and when they all finally blew off at eachother, I think
that was good for them, I still believe they will be together for years to
come.

Also, some of you were wondering where we heard this news. I live in
Seattle and got the info from the local radio station, is The End, 107.7,
KNDD. They also announced that there wasn't anything official about them
breaking up, so don't fret it and let's enjoy there music for the time
being.

Wha's up? I am almost positive that this burning question has already been
answered, but what the hell....i'll ask it anyway.

Question: Are there any bootlegs out there that exist of Soundgarden playing
at least a partial acoustic set?

The reason why i ask is because i have partial-acoustic bootleg cds of
Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana - and i tend to like these bands
better when they are playing "unplugged". One more question....

Are there any bootlegs of the Big Day Out Festival that are available?? If
someone could e-mail me and let me know i would really appreciate it.

Seth, you are right. Michael Jackson does own the Beatles'
recordings....yep, every single one of them. So that means that he is
getting royalties every time that someone decides to cover them....too bad,
right?

And, on the compilation thread or whatever it was called....i would love to
see a band called I Mother Earth play with Soundgarden. I think that the two
would blend in well together...plus they need some exposure over here in the
united states.

Lisa,

I didn't have the internet 2years ago, and that's when I joined the
soundgarden fan club. Since I live in Australia, they just sent me the
catalogue for free because I guess they just thought it was to much trouble
for me to get $2 american for them.
It was alaright I thought, as I didn't have a clue about the unofficial
mailing list, or the internet for that matter. But they never sent me
anystuff again.
A couple of months ago, when I got the internet, I joined the unofficail
mailing list(This wonderful mailing list that I'm on at the moment), and the
officail one. The official ones crap as it only sends you stuff like once a
month, but
then just three days ago the fan club sent me some soundgarden phone credit
card (It's of no use to me what so ever as it only works in America and I
live in Australia) a soundgarden christmas card, and something else. Either
way it's pretty crap and the only good thing about the fan club is the funky
picture on the phonecard. Don't bother joining it, if you havn't already.

I know this is ignorant, but will someone plese tell me who's in mad season,
and what the deal with the band is.

Personally, I think Soundgarden is too cool to do an unplugged show.

Why do you say that Carol? Lots of cool bands like Nirvana, AIC, PJ, etc
etc have done unplugged. Are you saying their not cool? What the hells your
problem!!
no no no.....i didnt mean that.

My thinking is there is alot that goes on behind the scenes with
management the public never knows about. Everything is probably carefully
planned. Any little thing can probably either help or hurt a career. I think
SG doing unplugged would be as bad and sad as SG doing late night w/david L.
I dont think SG really needs unplugged. They dont need it for a career move.
I think the whole setting would disagree with their 'tude. I wonder if PJ
really wanted to do it. Plus, its not unplugged anyway. All those geetars
are plugged in!! MTV Just sucks!

I love to hear Chris scream his guts out as much or more than him singing
quiet and low ;).

Hmm. Weird thread ain't it? With Ben, you have to consider his psycho factor.
You don't want to fight someone would is crazy and doesn't give a fuck. Ben
could easily take down Matt, I think. Now we go to Ben vs Kim: Hmm. This
would be a semi-even match I think. But after a long bloody drawn out fight, I
think Ben would be the last one standing (remember..psycho factor). And for the
main event: Chris vs Ben. Let's get ready to rumble : ) Chris, based on the
Fairfax show is still built, so this fight wouldn't be what you would expect.
Again, look for there to be a drawn out bloody battle, with Chris pulling out
various hidden weapons near the end. And when the dust is settled, I think
Chris, with Shroom cheering in the background, wins : )

OHHHHHHHHH!!!! such blasphemy!!!! Not only is Kim the founding member of
Soundgarden. He is known and praised for his fabulous guitar work. Chris
for his dynamic vocals. Matt for his superb drumming. What is Ben the most
known for.......giving fans the finger, threatening all that displease him,
spitting, violence and a nasty disposition!! Yes, he is a great bassist and
his songwriting would be greatly missed BUTT I think that if anyone has
caused a riff in the band it is Ben!! I think the current line-up is the
most sucessful of the three there have been. Maybe we are all reacting to
rumors that are unfounded. Having arguments with and thinking about killing

Whoa. I totally disagree with you Shawn. I agree that Ben is a better
songwriter than Kim, but not by much. However, Kim's leaving would have much
more of a devasting effect on Soundgarden. Kim's guitar playing defines
what SG is all about. When I listen to SG, the first things that come to
my mind are Chris's vocals, Kim's guitar playing, Matt's drums, and then
Ben's bass. I totally respect Ben's bass-playing ability and he does a great
job but if he left, I wouldn't be as heartbroken as opposed to if Kim left.
But hey, I don't think they are going to break up anyway.

Subject: snl; unplugged; my SG song

Hey...

As far as the whole SNL TV aptitude issue goes, I really had no
problem w/ their performance. Sure, it wasn't their best, but all in
all I thought it was pretty damn good, considering Chris was having
problems w/ his voice. "Pretty Noose" is one of the toughest
to sing, I would imagine, and I think he pulled it off pretty well.
And BIMH was great. I'm just happy I got to hear them play 2 of
my favorite songs on national tv. They have plenty of "TV aptitude."
They're not a flashy band, their music speaks for itself. I think that's
a really refreshing thing to see on tv. But if they choose not to do
many tv appearances, I respect that, and like I said before, I'd
prefer seeing them live to seeing them on tv any day.

I do kinda have to agree w/ whoever said they can't picture SG
sitting still for long enough to do an unplugged. It sure would be fun
to see 'em try though... I can just picture Ben getting mad and
smashing all the furniture, spitting at the camera people & knocking
over all the candles. But I loved both Nirvana and AIC unplugged,
it's true that some songs are *better* that way, and I really do wish
SG would do it, someday.

Whoever asked what sort of a song we'd write if we could write
one for SG... it's interesting you should bring that up. I recently
wrote a poem about a boy who's parents get divorced after his
father writes a book and his mother decides she wants to become
an actress, and it's written through the eyes of the boy, who's about
10 or 11. It was inspired by something that happened to one of my
friends, but before I wrote it I'd been listening to "Ty Cobb" a lot.
And after I read it a couple times, I thought, "Hey... this would
make a good punk song..." because it's actually about something
serious that happened but it's written in a very sarcastic way. And
I think that I was inadvertently influenced by SG to write it. So...
that's my song.

That's all for now...

Subject: Be nice to Ben!!!!!

Okayokayokay...I'll admit Ben is a bit out of control a lot of the time. I
think it all boils down to the fact that he's probably a bit insecure. He
tries so damn hard to convince evryone he's a big ball of hate, powerful
kicks & punches, and saliva, he forgets the other parts of him that are
showing (sexy bits, of course, but not exactly what I always hope to get a
glimpse of =). Just read his lyrics - you'll get a clue to his personality
there. I look at him and I see a big baby with a great ass - he acts like a
twelve year old most of the time. He speaks intelligently (when he's not busy
spitting on people), and I think he's really just a big sweetheart whose
trying to put on the act that he's tough, and going a LITTLE overboard. He's
only 28, as well. He'll get more docile as the years go by.

AND - have you noticed him getting any worse since Kurt Cobain committed
suicide, or is that just my overactive imagination...?

Sticking up for a psycho is not the easiest thing to do, =)

Now THAT I'd love to hear, too!!!! :-)=20

I suggested "Rusty Cage" because of its high notes. I'd like to hear =
Eddie attack it. It wouldn't surprise me if Pearl Jam could come up =
with a different twist to RC, much like Johnny Cash did. I like to hear =
a cover that sounds quite DIFFERENT from the original (unlike SG's cover =
of Devo's "Girl U Want", which to me sounds too much the same). Now =
Ministry's take of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" - THAT'S =
different.............

I think he is still trying to be a "punk" and that becomes tough when
you make alot of money and have anything you want. The anger doesn't work
if you have nothing to be angry about!

Exactly he is 28!!! not 18!! He is also a father which means he has
certain responsiblities. Wow!!! just think of the hissy fits he can teach
his kids to throw!!!
I like Ben but if I had to choose between him and Kim I would take Mr.
Thayil!! Either one might punch you out if you piss them off<duck Heather>
but I think you're chances of getting a knuckle sandwich or kick in the head
are better with Ben than Kim!! I hope Ben doesn't read this I wouldn't want
someone to come set my kitty cat on fire!! a Kim lover, toni

Seth, my first reaction was "Why CAN'T it be somms.sgi.net??" I feel
like we ARE somms - so our page should reflect that too!

But then, our Village Idiot suggested some good alternatives, and I simply cannot go past her first one:
>>1. goodeye.sgi.net

because that also represents us - with the Somms mailing list t-shirts stating 'Posting with my good eye closed'.

So that gets my vote!!

My second preference is
>>3. rustycage.sgi.net

simply because that's my favourite SG song.

Let us know what you decide, please, Seth!

Subject: Soundgarden pix

Hello fellow humans! I've been very silent and
non-existent as of late. I'm managing a "punky" alt. band
(think Green Day & The Beatles getting drunk together)
called The BAGHDADDIOS. Anyone in college radio PLEASE
email me privately.

Anyway, the point to my post...Caryn wrote about Charles
Peterson's exhibit in Chicago, and that reminded me of
something. Photog Michael Lavine has published a new
book, "Noise From the Underground: A Secret History of
Alternative Rock." CC circa 1988 me thinks, is on the
cover, exposing his sexy chest. SUCCULENT! Yum!! The
book also has other great pix, esp. Kurdt & Courtney, Rob
Zombie. Quoting a review in SMUGNYC mag,
"It would not be an overstatement to say Lavine (along
with live action photographer Charles Peterson) helped
create what would later become the Sub-Pop mystique."
He's also worked with Scavullo, and attributes his use of
colored-paper backdrops and use of "cross-processing" (to
create rich gooey hues) to him. I found it a very
interesting and entertaining volume.

I miss all of you!

Wallowing in the blood and mud with all the other pigs,
I remain,
Cynsir
