                                     Soundgarden: Trouble In Paradise

Last but not least, there's apparently
trouble in the
Soundgarden of Eden, and those in the
know say that
the band didn't get off the road a
second too soon.
You remember we told you two weeks ago
that the
Soundgarden shows at the Neal Blaisdell
Arena in
Hawaii on February 8 and 9 would be the
last shows
for the entire year, and the guys were
taking a
                                     well-deserved vacation (their first in
nine years),
before they began their third album for
A&M Records.=20

But insiders who were within hearing
distance of the
band after its show in Honolulu said
the band
culminated the tour with a shouting
match, which
almost came to fisticuffs. This comes
on the heels of
the persistent rumors that the band was
breaking up
=97 but despite some of the fundamental
differences
two of the members have with one
another, TLN still
insists on going out on a limb and
saying the band will
not break up. The guys have too much to
lose. Let's
hope this extended vacation from one
another does
                                     the trick.=20

I totally agree. There are two songs on DOTU that bite really hard at older
Rush. One is NeverNamed. The section when the riff & jam is very reminiscent
of ByTor & the Snow Dog from Fly by Night. I can't remember what the other
one was, it's been a while since I listened to DOTU. I'll have to break it
out tonight and find it.
I highly recommend Rush to anyone on this list. If you are a musician, I
think you will especially appreciate them.

Thanks to all who helped me find colored vinyl. I really appreciate it. I
dont have any yet, but if everything goes okay, I should end up with a few.

At the risk of being shot down in flames, I just have to comment on a couple
things:

U2: A good example of how soundgarden has not let fame go to their heads
like that.

Trent Reznor. Trent Reznor? arrrg! dead rotting dog. talk about depressing.

Do any of you guys listen to older RUSH? I think they have alot of the same
good qualities as Soundgarden does. If you like postive music, try Rush
Caress of Steel, its pretty good really.

I havent been listening to Soundgarden lately. And then Chris came to me
in a dream last night and just talked to me to remind me he was still there.
 I havent forgotten.

Someone asked about Susan managing other bands. Sorry but I found that
really hilarious. (hahahahahahahah).
Sorry someone.

i, for one, think that the demo version of FOBD is tired and boring. it
may have "balls", but it's basically your typical cock-rock song, offering
no sense of forward movement, leaving sg wallowing in the muds of
uncreativity.
either that, or it's pretty damn good....

Long time coming...Seemed to take me through.

Man, it sure does seem quiet in the SG community. Too fucking quiet.
So I came up with a thread, maybe, I mean it might have been done before, but
I'll ask anyway.

I was watching Live play Unplugged last night and I thought they
played that
gig pretty well.I'm not a great fan of theirs or anything but they sounded
good.
What about SOUNDGARDEN doing this? Some may argue that they wouldn't want to
sell out, but they did play SNL. Whatever, I know I would like to see it.
So I guess my question to all of you is: Who would want to see it and who
wouldn't,
and what you want their set to be? My list is as follows:

1) Boot Camp
2) Dusty
3)Seasons
4)FOBD
5) Overfloater
6) Somewhere
7) BHS
8)BIMH
9)Tighter & Tighter
10) Holy Water
11) Limo Wreck ( I would love to hear this acoustically)
12)Like Suicide

I know there is nothing older than BMF, but it is unplugged, and it is my
opinion.
I do know that *my blood begins to boil* just thinking about it. That is
something
I personally hope they do some day.It doesn't have to be on MTV, but if it
was
I'm sure all of you would tune in.

seems to be very resourceful and kind, I figured I'd step up with a
new challenge: I really want to find a copy of BadMotorFinger on
yellow vinyl!!!!!! If anyone has any ideas, e-mail me. I have
searched a number of used vinyl shops online and in person and have
had no luck. I missed it at one place by a few hours! And it went
for SIX BUCKS!!! Again, thanks for Reading, and let me know if you
know about the elusive BMF yellow vinyl.

P.S. I ordered the MOSH video. Very nicely done. It was even
updated to include BUTOW. Some older videos are not on it, but
overall a very nice compilation.

Today I came across a total moran at my school. I was sitting in the
Guidance office and a guy wearing a Jar Of Flies t-shirt walks in and
sits down beside me. I had on my SG t-shirt and the guy looks over at
me and says that SG kicks ass. I nod my head in agreement, and then the
guy says Yeah that dudd Matt can play a mean bass. I look at him like
he is a total idiot and he asks me what my problem is. I then tell him
that Matt Cameron plays the drums not the bass and that Ben Shepard is
the bass player. He then has the nerve to argue! But that is not the
end of his ignorance. I comment that AIC is a great band and that it is
a shame what happened to Stan Layne. What is his response-Who is that?
I give him he is a total idiot look again and then I tell him that he is
the lead vocalist for AIC. OHH he says. Then he asks me what happened
to him? This is just to much for me so I get up and go sit on the other
side of the office. What is this world coming too?

The thread about who I would like to see SG get togather with. I would
love for Alice MudGarden to do another song. But since Stan is slowly
killing himself that doesn't seem to be in the future.
Or how about a G-N-R / SG song. Chris and Axls screaming voice, 2 of
the greatest axemen Slash and Kim togather, Duff and Ben, And Matt and
Matt. It sucks that G-N-R split up!!

Metallica's coming to Tampa!!! Metallica's coming to Tampa!!!

First off... Welcome back Andrea! You know last night at 4:30am when I
was at work and my boss decides to call a meeting. And I join my co-workers
feeling like a piece of shit because it is 4:30a, I have a cold, I have a
sick kid at home, I had a total of 3 1/2 hours of sleep(not all at once) in
the past 30 hours and my co-workers decide to "fuck" with me. I felt like
coming to blows with them, I felt like "breaking up my crew", I felt like
going home and taking a year off!!!! But in the real world that can't
happen. Things may not be peachy right now BUTT Kim, Ben, Matt and Chris
have the luxury of making enough money to chill for a good long while and
stay our of each other's face. Most of us don't have that choice. I will
see the same people again tonight at 4am and we will have to get along
because I could be fired if I "came to blows" with one of them. Guys, thank
the Soundgarden gods that you have a career doing something you love and
make a good living at it! You could be out her in the trenches with the rest
of us! OK everyone all together say ahhhhhhhhh and feel sorry for toni!!!!

Subject: Soundgarden's Big Day Out

Found these snippets of Soundgarden in some of the Syndney Big Day Out
reviews....first one is shitty and the other is from my favourite journo,
Morat, who *loves* our guys.......

From Metal Hammer, March 1997

"Making a return trip to the Big Day Out, Soundgarden proved they really are
a prettier, more melodic Black Sabbath. That's right, the more popular they
get, the more they suck. Instead of Hands All Over, distortion, Marshall
grunts and offbeat timings, we get Pretty Noose, Black Days, Burden In My
Hand and ELO's light show. The fat tones and slower songs did mean that the
sound was crystal clear, so virtually all of the 40,000 sunburnt,
beer-drenched punters heard every riff and chop, but a little bit of a grunt
never hurt anyone, did it?"
Jeremy Sheaffe

From Kerrang, February 22nd

"As briliant as they are, it's no secret that the 'Garden can be a hit and
miss live band. But tonight, they shine like the brightest star on the
clearest night. Or something. Sure, it's pretty cool watching them from the
side of the stage in the company of Liam and Keith Prodge, Burton C Bell and
Tim from Rancid, but pretty soon you just get engrossed in the music, and we
all stand open-mouthed as Soundgarden play a fantastic set.

"The whole band seem to be going for it tonight. Cornell hurls himself
around the stage during a breakneck Ty Cobb, guitarist Kim Thayil throws all
the top rock poses, bassist Ben Shepherd looks downright dangerous, and Matt
Cameron blows everyone's mind by simply being one of the best drummers on earth.

" And every time the stage lights illuminate the crowd, you look out at a
sea of people and feel part of something great. You really should try seeing
your favourite band thousands of miles from home ( a return flight will set
you back 650 quid, backpackers' accommodation is six quid a night). But
enough of The Travel Show, because Soundgarden are playing an indestructible
Blow Up The Outside World, and Chris Cornell is singing his heart out.

"They finish with Jesus Christ Pose, Cornell booting his guitar around and
striking the JC Pose with his guitar and mike stand as fireworks explode in
the night sky. Which would have been a fitting climax to this glorious
festival, were it not for the fact that Aussie legends The Beasts Of Bourbon
ain't done crooning on Stage Three.

" We start to wander over with Kim Thayil. And walk straight into a punch-up
by the backstage door, which seems to involve most of Rocket From The Crypt
and Chris and Ben from Soundgarden. We'd offer to help, but really we don't
give a four-X."
Morat

There are two brilliant pix of Chris in Kerrang (with an interview next
week!) Plus Kim takes part in The Kerrang Challenge: the trivia quiz the
stars love to hate. (He scores 20 out of 25 with help from Matt!)I'm sending
the lot to Seth - when you see it depends on Stargate's server working! What
a bummer - no Soundgarden for the rest of the year, no Shroomy and now no
Seth!!!!

Subject: the usual & a new thread

Hey...

First off I want to say that I completely agree w/ what Greg said
about how you don't have to relate directly to lyrics to feel a
connection to them. Some of my favorite songs are about things
I've never experienced myself, but because they're sung w/ so
much passion and feeling, they really touch me. Often times it's
not the words you really relate to - it's the emotion that comes
across in the singer's voice, or in the music.

Which version of BHS do I prefer? It's so hard to say. The original
version will always be one of my all-time favorites, but I'd have to
say that live I prefer CC's solo, for lots of reasons. For one thing,
it's *his* song, and I think it comes across best (live anyway) solo.
Also, one of the first things that attracted me to BHS was it's
eeriness, and that's really magnified in the solo version.

Okay - here's my thread. Someone asked what SG songs we'd like
to hear other bands perform. Well... say SG was doing a show just
for you, and they were willing to cover any songs you wanted. What would =
they be? Mine are:
1. "Violet" by Hole
2. "Alive" by PJ (I know they've already done this one, but I've
never heard it)
3. "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads
4. anything by David Bowie (I don't think *that* would ever happen, but =
I've loved him since I was 11 and had to put that
down)
5. "Heaven Beside You" by AIC
I know some of those are strange choices, but hey - it's *my*
fantasy. =3D)
And there's lots more but that would take up way to much space. :)

That's all for now...

it until now. In a way I hope it isn't true, not that it would effect the
amount of respect I have for Kim (Kim is a guitar god no matter what!!!),

(Scene: A hotel lobby)

MATT: So, any of you guys up for a fire extinguisher fight?
Tear this joint apart, have some fun, y'know?

CHRIS: No.

MATT: Well-how about a piss fight? C'mon
!
CHRIS: Abosolutely not.

MATT: OK- maybe not a piss fight but we could maybe run around the
lobby here and make some noise.

CHRIS: Why?

MATT: Well-I dunno, 'cause it'd be disruptive and fun and rock'n'roll!
Let's do it!

CHRIS: We'll do nothing of the sort.

MATT: Well-maybe we could grab a beer or something, y'know, get a
little caned, talk bullshit, leer at chicks--no?

CHRIS: I absolutly forbid it.

MATT: Ok, maybe not beer-but we could maybe play cards.

CHRIS: No.

MATT: Dominoes?

CHRIS: Uh-uh.

MATT: Say, I've got a little trick I do with my fingers. There's the
church, there's the steeple, look inside and-

CHRIS: Stop that.

MATT: Awww (*starts fidgeting*)

CHRIS: And stop fidgeting.

MATT: Well-what are we gonna do? Hell, it's only seven in the evening!

CHRIS: We're gonna sit right here and stare sternly into the middle
distance. And then, round about midnight we're going to go to bed.

MATT: Why?

CHRIS: Because we're Soundgarden, that's what Soundgarden do and so
long as I'm in charge of this band that's what Soundgarden will
continue to do.

(Pause..)

MATT: So, I suppose a competition to see who can shove the most
hard-boiled eggs up his ass is out of the question?

CHRIS: Way, way out of the question.

MATT: Ok. Fine. Well-on with the staring, I guess...

THREE HOURS LATER.....

MATT: "I spy with my little eye-"

CHRIS: Shut up!

You know, I am sitting here trying to figure out some kind of thread that
could jumpstart the list a little since we are officially in a lull right
now. Here are some ideas:

What artists would you like to see collaborate with Soundgarden?

And since DOTU has almost worn out it's welcome with me a little, I think
it is time to start thinking about their new album which is allegedly
coming out later this year. This is going to sound real corny but why
don't we start throwing out potential album names for it? Come on..you know
you want to : )

What do you all think?

i don't understand how you can name an album without knowing what songs or

Anyway, I'l also join the BHS debate. I love both versions, but if I could

Just replying to what Kenny Beckwith said about Soundgarden never being on
MTV. I don't really care or don't really like to see Soundgarden on MTV too
much because just look at the crap that they play in heavy rotation, I don't
want to mention the B-band.

Anyways, I saw the poster which is probably one of the most famous
scenes in Seattle music. The poster is off the cover to LTL and was on the
Real World in NY. Andre, the guitarist and vocalist of his band Reigndance,
I believe, was playing at his friend's house in the basement in Jersey.
There was only one poster to be seen and you guessed what it was. I was
shocked to see some people on the Flake World who had some good musical
tastes. I last saw Pretty Noose in August, and they made that lackluster but
psychadelic alternate version. I love the original where they are sitting at
the bar and then Kim whoops some brothers at pool and want to see the ending
where Chris beats or kills that chick with the horns in red that prances
around the entire video. I caught "Loud Love" on M2 some day last month but
only saw the last minute or so.

In response to a couple of threads, I would never think that sg
would ever consider unplugged, they have turned down Letterman many times and
said yes to SNL after they asked only a thousand times. I liked the solo
version of BHS when I saw them in Nov. but the original version is still the
most psychadelic song on their most psychadelic album. I love to hear BHS,
4th of July, TDITTL, Boot Camp, PN,
Beyond the Wheel, Superunknown, etc. when I am laying back on my waterbed and
feeling the music take over my entire body, maybe Shroomy knows more about
the effects of Mad Season Mushrooms. Mad Season's entire CD is full of these
mellow tunes that make me feel the same way as SG does, Silverchair's "Abuse
me"
intro sounds a lot like "All Alone" by MS and their heavy songs still sound
to me like pre SU stuff.

Hi all!

I have a couple of little things to say tonight.

Caryn Rose> I don't think, correct me if I'm wrong, that either Pearl Jam or
Soundgarden are really pool players at all. I always picture Soundgarden as
your baseball type players and Pearl Jam as your basketball players. Then
again mabe I'm just being influenced by the whole Mookie Blaylock thing and
an article on PJ that I once read, and the fact the soundgarden tshirt I
have is a baseball tshirt.

Bernard Fanning Slaves and bulldozers>>

I reakon Bernie would do a really ace version of Boot camp, an unkind and
possibly blow up the outside world.

Kesa>>

That little picture thing you did at the end of your mail was really cute.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I've heard a lot about this mad seasons
thing, but I don't actually know the names of the people in it or the deal
with the band set up. Could someone please explain?

Chris's tatto>> I know this was a while ago but anyway... I'm not sure where
I found out what the tatto looks like, but I'm pretty sure it's that
chinease like symbol thing that comes up on the official soundgarden
homepage when you first enter.

Oh and if Kim was a girl, then Audrey Hetburn was a boy,

well, we've gotten eddie singing backing vocals on 'outshined' more than

in fact, my video companion was watching a pj show on video from 92 where
they did a bit of 'outshined' and then -- a bit of 'room a 1000 years

Well, here we go again... I think we've all agreed that it is highly
unlikely that SG will ever do an unplugged... and if the SNL performance
were any indicator of TV aptitude, I'd rather see SG stay hidden behind
crafty studio work and lound concert amps...
I think an unplugged performance for a band like SG would really be a
challenge, whereas most of the unplugged shows have featured bands that
more likely lend themselves to acoustic performances... *Live* being a
good example... Of course SG does have recent material that would lend
itself to a decent acoustic set, but most of it is just made to be
played plugged in and feeding back...
