Thanks to everyone who set my mind at ease with the SG/BMG thing. The gerbil
is resting. =)

Now, pardon my ignorance, but where can I find Chris' solo version of BHS?

AND - I absolutely *adore* the cover of the Flower single - y'know, the one
where the guys are all standing on a roof someplace. It's my favorite picture
of these guys before Ben joined the group, and I sit and stare at it for up
to an hour sometimes. Does anyone know where I might be able to get a poster
of this, or a copy of it or something, anything??? It's the only picture of
Chris with long hair that *really* does something for me, and Matt looks like
an angel when he smiles, and the fact that he's about 24 or 25 in this
picture makes it all the more moving. =) I *need* a larger picture of this
if I wish to maintain my dignity (people don't find it as weird if you stare
at a poster as they do if you satre at the cover of a CD, I have found out)
and any help with this would be *greatly* appreciated.

Thanks much,
Benlover

We're new to the Digest. We have been looking for BMF/SOMMS forever - we have
been able to find many early cd's but can't seem to locate SOMMS. We have The
Garden Grows, good songs, but the audio quality is not very good.

As far as singing in the shower, I'd say Slaves and Bulldozers is a good one
to scream, but hurts like hell if you don't have the voice.

curious: Has the SG rendition of Helter Skelter on the past tour led anyone
to dig out their collection and listen to U2's version again?

i just sat thru watching Rattle and Hum for the first time in years and just
thought about that, and a million other U2 vs. SG things...like how they
both have songs called "4th of July", how Bono wrote "The Roman candle and
lightning, lights up the sky" 10 years before Superunknown...

i dunno, maybe it is cuz of the new U2 release that I am thinking about
this, and maybe it is cuz Bono was my very first rock love (and always will
be), years before I even knew who Chris Cornell was...when "War" came out, I
was 15 years old and there was nothing better in the world (am i showing my
age or what?!?!)...and I still cry all the way thru "Unforgettable Fire"
(the song)

i think the strongest connection between the two for me is the lyrical
imagery both bands create...when i think about the choices we have today of
what to listen to, there is still no comparison to the imagery that U2
created and then that SG created and continues to create...What else do we
have today? Sure, Tool sounds good but for me there is no meaning, no
imagery that means very much to me - sure it is angry and intense, but does
it actually mean anything in the big picture?....Politically, religiously,
socially, there was no other band like U2 ever in my generation...No
American band has or ever would, come close to writing such powerful music
about Martin Luther King, for example..calling on Yeats, Steinbeck, Mailer,
the bible, for example, they lyrically blew away any other band in the
'80s....and then came Cornell's lyrics which continue to amaze me...

but despite all the politics, Bono still wrote beautiful love songs, "you
say you'll give me a highway with noone on it, a treasure just to look upon
it ...you say you'll give me eyes on a moon of blindness, a river in the
time of dryness, a barbour in the tempest..." something i wish i saw more of
from Cornell (i know, this can be highly debated...)

live performance: i have seen a gazillion shows in my life and i can
honestly say that none has *ever ever* been better than U2...i literally
slept on the sidewalks of 5 cities to see them, and there will never be an
experience like watching Bono live on stage...well, then again there is
Cornell...i must say that there is strong comparison to me in terms of live
shows - the drama and intensity that U2 had on stage back then reminds me
alot of the earlier SG tour dates, with a commanding, emotional, intense
male vocalist hit you right in the gut..

AND, we have talked so much on this list about what has happened to SG over
time, etc...Well, when "Gloria" came out in 1981, who ever would have
guessed that SIXTEEN years later, the same band would have a CD out called
"Pop" and a single called Discotheque....it is a progression and evolution
that does not sit well with many people, and personally makes me want to
freeze time at 1987 so i could sit and listen to The Joshua Tree and
Screaming Life forever...not that I don't like DOTU or Zooropa.... bands
change and progress - it is a fact...but that doesnt mean it is easy...I am
debating whether or not to see U2 live on this tour - if i could be
guaranteed music only up to Achtung Baby, i'd be there in a second...if I
could see an SG show of music up to SU, i would never think twice about
going....

OK, enough of my ramblings...i have no idea if this made sense or has any
real point to it, but hey i am talking to myself so it doesnt matter anyway
(right justin?) ;-)

The only problem is that "nothing lasts forever". At least new material
through an album can be immortalised. I'm glad their taking time off, but of
course it must be disappointing for you guys in the states.

Oh yeah! I've never done drugs but I think that the feeling you get from
seeing Soundgarden (and still about a week later) is just like a massive high.

January 25/26 1997. Definitely my best ever weekend to date.

Oh well...be patient mate! It's funny to think that the next time we'll be
seeing Soundgarden they'll be playing songs that aren't even made up yet!
Weird! And I'm willing to bet that they'll be good too, so the wait will be
worth it. The time should fly hopefully.

List Thuggie's right! I've been writing to Terri, who lives in Vegas,
and we've been really looking forward to having a Sommsvention in her
town. Not many people seem interested (too much on their minds I guess)
but I agree if it's gonna happen, it needs to get planned NOW.

I'm gonna be camping from June 7 through the 17th,
but would really dig doing a SOMMS thang any time after that.

Eliza, this caught my attention because I made pretty much this same
observation earlier today. This morning my husband turned on the TV and
Rattle and Hum was on. I was busy and not really watching but at some
point I walked by the TV and stopped in my tracks. I can't even
remember what song Bono was singing but I stood there transfixed. It
struck me that he had much the same effect on me as CC--that same
emotional impact. There are only a few singers who can convey that type
of intensity that can only be completely genuine. Either you've got it
(whatever "it" is) or you don't.

> i have no idea if this made sense or has any

I don't know if I have any real point either, but it made sense to me.
I've never seen U2 live but I wish I had. I wish I'd seen Soundgarden
in their early days too, but at least I did get to finally see them and
it was well worth the wait. Oh, I'm way too tired to be doing this.

Good night,
Candy

actually, no, but i did go dig out the beatles version. i forgot how really
intense it was.
(what's funny is that i'm a huge u2 fan and i HATE their version of helter
skelter. ;-> )

yes, but bono is a different kind of lyricist, and when you get to that
level i don't think you can compare someone like him to chris cornell to
even (dare i say it?) eddie vedder. or michael stipe, for that matter.
(i'm in the middle of this 35-post-long thread about "shaking through" by
r.e.m. over on THAT newsgroup). i would never compare them... they all
speak to different parts of me. it's like trying to compare the stones vs.
the who... can't be done. jagger/richards has as much place in my life as
townshend does (well, maybe not. the who loom a little too large in my own
personal legend for anyone to usurp them).

without getting into too much off topic conversation, i would say that U2
were unique in their place... and when someone is so powerfully your
favorite the way it is clear they are to you, i wouldn't try to debate you.
;-) but i do think there is some room for argument there. ;-)

>but despite all the politics, Bono still wrote beautiful love songs, "you

...hence my point that you can't really compare them. they aren'at the same
people writing the same music so how can you possibly compare them? ;-)

but that's the point, bands grow and progress and true artists continually
explore! if they weren't true artists none of these bands would have earned
our devotion, but the flip side is that there are no promises, no
guarantees. thank god both of these bands have the courage to be so fucking
DIVERSE, to take us places we may not have wanted to go.

yes, we did! some of the highlights of this disc include:

1) shroom's rockline phone call!
2) seth perlman's memorable unfURLed speech!
3) all of shroom's .wav files on her late lamented ibm laptop (that's one

4) assorted sommsters screaming when chris cornell dedicated a song to them

5) kim thayil saying "the ktms, they're crazy!" backstage in chicago

that's it. Or maybe nobody's really had the heart to since we found
out the tour's off.

Anyway, about CC getting a tattoo... I really don't understand it,
but then again I can't criticize, seeing as how I've got one (a small

nothing wrong w/ tattoos, in moderation. But CC getting one...
well that's like planting roses in a field of wild flowers or building

maybe it's fake.

Well, that's 'bout it. More tomorrow.
