Subject: Perfect 4/songs I dislike/Seth, baby

Hi all,

Well, I just caught up (almost) on 2 months worth of unread posts. Do you
remember me? It's 2:30 am here. I'm screwed as far as waking up for work
tomorrow!!

To Awesmeyes@aol.com...your voice class is probably over by now, but "Amazing
Grace" starts with a perfect 4. I know that's not the answer you're hoping
for, but it's the first thing that I thought of. Soundgarden ARE a perfect
4...(a perfect 10?) Hey, they're the only popular Seattle band who make
videos AND tour (AiC's 4 dates with KISS don't count as a tour).

Seth, thanks for not giving up the site. We need you, buddy. I hope this list
stays, somehow.

Lisa Beckwith...I saw your name and thought you were someone I knew, but then
you said something about living in Florida. So, I got all worked up for
nothing.

Songs I dislike (hey, no band is perfect): Power Trip and I Awake. What were
they thinking??? I'd like to add that this album is seriously underrated.
Everyone hates it, but I like it better than Screaming Life/Fopp and
Ultramega OK. (Wow, it's downright balmy in here...oh, it's just the flame
war starting.)

OK, I'm crawling back into my lurker position for another two months.
(Newbies aren't the only ones who feel intimidated to post!)

Subject: Review from 'The Honolulu Advertiser'

'Tantrum Mars Soundgarden Show', Monday, February 10, 1997

What made the last show of Soundgarden's world tour at the Blaisdell Arena
memorable was not the great-sounding music, unfortunately, but the surly
behavior of Ben Shepherd. Shepherd, who plays his low-slung bass with an
assertive, rumbling pulse, made his bad mood known both to his bandmates
and the audience more than halfway through the concert last night. What
triggered his tantrum could have been problems with his instrument, but in
any event he spent the remainder of the concert kicking at a side stage
light, making obscene gestures to the audience and occasionally spitting
in the general direction of bandmates Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil. Lead
singer and guitarist Chris Cornell had some words with Shepherd, but that
apparently didn't appease him. At the end of 'Blow Up the Outside World,'
he brought everything to an abrupt halt as he took off his bass, threw it
up in the air, gave the audience the finger and stalked off stage.

It had been a good concert before all of this came crashing down, and
occasionally inspiring. The so-called Seattle 'grampas of grunge' showed
they could still deliver the goods in an arena-sized venue. Two stints at
Lollapaloza, in 1992 and this past summer playing alongside the likes of
Metallica, make Soundgarden true survivors in the music biz. Their sound
has matured from their early 'grunge' inspiration of '70s larger-than-life
rock riffs with '80s hard-core punk energy, to a rolling powerhouse music
with equal parts Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Black Flag cut through
with melodic hooks.

Before Shepherd's distractions, all seemed well as the quartet started
with the beckoning call of 'Spoonman.' It was a good example of the
band's trademark of slipping in unusual meters that didn't detract from
the band's visceral rock sound. The sparse stage setup was the perfect
setting for Soundgarden's no-nonsense stage presence. The carefully
synchronized lighting provided the needed dramatic punctuation.

Cornell is the focus of the band, and while he is no longer the
bare-chested, long-haired, sexy screamer of younger days, his
self-admitted 'classic rock' vocal style is muscular, but not in a macho
way. It cuts through with authority over the controlled tumult created
around him by lead guitarist Thayil, Shepherd and especially drummer
Cameron.

The bulk of their set list came from the band's last three albums,
'Badmotorfinger,' 'Superunknown' and their latest, 'Down on the Upside.'
'Outshined' (with its memorable couplet, "I'm looking California/and
feeling Minnesota") and 'Rusty Cage' (which Cornell dedicated to "the man
in black," Johnny Cash, who covered the song himself on his recent album)
were audience favorites. 'My Wave' got a more focused, angrier reading
than the almost bright and jaunty album version. And the band's big radio
crossover hit, 'Black Hole Sun,' became a solo personal number with just
Cornell singing and his guitar, to red floodlights and beams illuminating
the arena. The band especially clicked on the songs from 'Down on the
Upside.' 'Pretty Noose,' 'Burden In My Hand' and the inspired hatred of
'Ty Cobb,' showed the band bearing down at full bore.

Hopefully Shepherd's onstage behavior was the result of exhaustive
touring, and not the manifestation of ill feelings that may threaten the
band's existence. There's still a lot of music from this Soundgarden.

<End of newspaper article>
- --------------------------
I had the privilege of watching the entire Honolulu show from the stage.
The dialogue between Ben and Kim just before Ben ended the short set (85
minutes including an impromptu solo by Chris and 'Fell on Black Days' with
only Chris and Matt) went like this:

<Ben and Kim, nose-to-nose, shoulder-to-shoulder, near-braul>
Ben: FUCK YOU!!
Kim: NO, FUCK YOU!! (striding back to his guitar tech, shaking head)
Ben: I'LL BREAK YOUR BIG FAT HEAD!! (stomping offstage, kicking)
- --------------------------
Somebody please remind me...how old are these men? Thank the tour-gods
that they'll be staying home in 1997. Sure does sound like they need a
break from the road and each other. They all left in the same van...it
seems they made up rather quickly. <shrug>

Subject: "Holy Water"

Hey...

Regarding the questions about "Holy Water"... here's my thoughts.
Like CC, I was raised Catholic. And at a certain point in my life I
began to question Catholicism and religion in general. I guess that
was the point when I was really beginning to become my own
person, or "find myself" ya might say... and I found that many of
the teachings of the church conflicted w/ what I truly believed in
my heart and with the way that I wanted to live my life. I also
began to see a lot of hypocrisies. This is what "Holy Water"
means to me.
I feel a real connection to the lyrics in this song because of my views
on religion. I'm a heretic and a freethinker - and very proud to say
so. Some of my favorite lines are "It's the big lies that are more likely
to be believed" - which to me has to do w/ the fact that so many
people buy into religion - and "Damn the water if it's life you want to
drink" - which is basically saying forget religion if you want to live
your own life and live it to the fullest and be your own person.
"As I'm raped by another monkey circus freak trying to take my
indignance away from me" is also one of my favorite lines. The
monkey circus freaks are the proselytizers.
To me, "Holy Water" isn't at all sexual. Lyrically, it's very similar to
one of my other favorite songs - NIN's "Heresy" - only much more
subtle and poetic.

That's all for now. ;-)

*Note* - this post was not meant to offend any religious folks out
there. :)

        Hey

Something really cool happened to me last weekend, and I thought I might
share with the group. I was in the Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul for those
not in the Midwest U.S.) Saturday to see STOMP at the State Theater. Every
time I am in Minneapolis at night, I get lost without fail. I try very hard
to remember where I am supposed to go to get home but, almost ritually, I
end up on my way to Iowa or Canada as opposed to Wisconsin. This particular
trip I missed the one sign that indicates the on-ramp to I-94 East, and in
an attemp to go back and find it again, I got all mixed up in some kind of
scary neighborhoods. Now, understand that I am the kind of driver that gets
irritable when things aren't going my way, and between that and the radio
playing Bush and No Doubt, I had quite the case of the 'edgies.' Just when
I figured we were never going to make it anywhere resembling Wisconsin
before the sun came up, Outshined came on the radio. I don't think it was a
sign from the rock and roll gods or anything like that, but it was something
familiar and welcome and it really helped my concentration. I was on the
Interstate before the second verse was over. Cool.

        Later
        A Different Seth

P.S. No offense to MNDOT, but I-94 is a pretty important road, and putting
a couple signs up to show us where would be a bonus.

P.P.S. No offense to ME, but I-94 is a pretty important road, and paying
attention to where the hell I am going might be a bonus. SW

Hello,

When I think of Black Hole Sun, I think of the wierd music, the cool way
the lyrics on the chorus are, and of course, Christ standing there singing to
the sky and wearing that cute skull shirt. He looks so innocent in that
video. Well to me anyway.

Kickstand just to me sounds alot like Aerosmith. "Oh Kickstand you got
the juice to fill my cup" "My mother said that its alriiiiiiight, yea".
Just kinda sounds like Aerosmith. I always thought if it as their
"Aerosmith" song. I dont hate it. I just pass it up.

I would have loved to have seen SG live this year, but Im glad that
they're taking some time off. They deserve a rest and some relaxation
time.....Chris needs to rest his voice. I wuz a little worried about them,
silly me.=)

YOu have a good day, good day.. Its not your fault.

While surfing thru Imusic's web site...I just noticed that they have
debuted a new Real video technology and it contains some SG videos. I'm
sure it sucks cuz I've yet to view a good streaming video. but hey...you
never know :)

I'm on a network puter here at school so I can't check out the 28.8k or
ISDN version. BUT those of you that can download the real video player
check out live clips from the bands euro tour. Included are streaming
video's of BHS (CC solo), Ty Cobb (live), Butow (live) and Butow (video).

You also need ISDN or 28.8k access to see it...and remember you gots to
download the plug in first.

Hey everybody. *warning un-SG content* Does anyone have the Silverchair cd,
Freak Show? Do you like it? Email etc.

Ok now, first of all SG and I had a date last Friday. Actually, I had to
baby sit, and I finally got around to renting "Singles" so I could see our
lovely and talented mighty men in action. Great, but VERY SHORT performance.
Damn them! I guess Susan thought AiC needed it more than the guys.

Um, what SG song do I sing in the shower? Well, considering I don't sing in
the shower, I break glass... no really, I'll usually wail out "Fresh
Tendrils", "Beyond the Wheel", and "BIMH". I sing others, but those are the
ones that frequent my shower time. Actually, my voice isn't bad at all, I
sang for chorus at a different high school, and we were so good, we were
invited to sing with a large symphony orchestra, and had a performance
recorded in a studio! Of course, I'm no soprano star, but I can carry a tune
for the most part.

Chris being unfaithful!!! Nooooooo!! Sure, some of us say we'd love to have
Chris cheat on his wife, especially with us, but does any female deserve
this? Any male for that matter? And if we had our little fling, would we
really be satisfied with just one? I sure wouldn't. I'll just stick to
dreaming about meeting them, and to my deep dark dreams of knowing Chris in
all aspects, mmm...mmmm... good! I sure wouldn't want Susan to trust a man
for over ten years, and find out it's all a lie. Two of my friends are a
couple who have been dating since the beginning of eighth grade until now,
our senior year. I was talking to the guy's mother one day, and y'know what
she said to me? The reason those two are still together now, is b/c
Meghan(the girl) knows when to go. If he is gonna be w/ his buddies, let
him. Give him space and he'll come back to you, if he really loves you. My
mom said the same thing, give your man space, and he'll appreciate it. I see
a whole lot of that w/ Susan and Chris. They obviously love one another
(um... Chris's tatoo as an example), but they also respect one another, which
means they live together w/ out killing each other. Direct quote from Chris,
"She's the best roommate I've ever had." (details, dec 96). 'Nuf said.

Um, BTW, that still doesn't mean that I'm not insanely jealous of that lucky
woman. Just happy for her.

SG content: Can anyone tell me what singles, ep's, etc are out of date now,
so I don't bother going loony searching for them? If it's on the website,
I'm sorry, but my computer hasn't let me reach the web for a week and a half
now. Thanks.

Whoa!! Cool! Thanks for the info Steve. I just dowloaded the RealVideo

REalVideo page and worked ok. The sound was decent, though the video was
only .25 fps. I also got the encoder. The files are tiny. I even
converted a clip of the Toronto show and posted it on my SG page and tried
it out. This is the probably the best streaming technology I've seen,
though the frame rate is extremely low. You don't need a high frame rate
for, say, interviews. /me grins towards a hard drive in Boston. I can't
wait to get home to check these clips out on the Official Page. Later,

Hello everyone...

Last night I went out and bought Fortissimo. Why is it called
Fortissimo? What does that mean? Why didn't they call it Louder Than
Live - The CD? Even though I don't understand the title the CD kicks
ass. Earach My Eye and Big Bottom were pretty funny and if cover songs
count they get my new vote for funniest SG song. I also just got from
the mail the Spoonman single w/ Cold Bitch and Exit Stonehenge. They
are all right. Maybe it will take some time for them to grow on me.

What song I sing in the shower? Usually what ever SG song I just
finished listening too or which ever I had stuck in my head at the time.

Chris having a tattoo really suprised me because he said he hates pain.
Thats why he doesn't have nipple rings. (Was he joking about the nipple
rings?) I think that is so sweet. But anyways... Who really knows what
Chris and Susans relationship is like except for Chris and Susan. Most
of us female SG fans joke about Chris, but I would rather talk to him
then have meaningless sex with a man(even though that man happens to be
the sexiest man in the world) that wouldn't give you a second thought
once the deed was done. Even though me having a conversation with CC
would consist of me babbling on like a total idiot about nothing at all.
Pretty much like I am right now. I wish all the happiness to Susan and
Chris. And to the other 3 guys and their gals.

God today has been really crappy. As soon as I get off this computer I
am going to go drown my sorrows in Soundgarden.

Subject: concerts vs new albums

Ten brilliant albums but no more touring or vice versa?

I know this thread has been around a week or so, but I've been pondering on
it a lot...this post promises to be long and rambling but I wondered if
anyone else feels the same as me...

I've seen Soundgarden twice - first time at the Reading Festival in 94 and
last year at Brixton Acadamy and neither time did I feel that euphoric
rush/orgasmic experience that other sommsters have posted about.

At Reading I got the feeling they'd rather be anywhere but there; at Brixton
it was a pretty exciting concert for me - the sound was great and Chris was
bouncing around and telling awful jokes. But still, for me there was
something missing. How I felt seeing them there and hearing them live just
didn't match the heady heights I can reach listening to their records, or
seeing them doing Searching With My Good Eye Closed on the Motorvision
video. I feel like one of those women who write in to problem pages saying
they've never had an orgasm!!!!:-)))

I was hoping to see Soundgarden on their home turf this year (looks like it
won't happen though) to see if it made any difference. I know they don't
like Europe much (our beer is warm, our food is funny, everyone uses
different money etc etc) so maybe how they feel about playing here affects
me in some weird way.
Has anyone else who's seen them outside America had the same sense of
missing out somehow on the live Soundgarden experience?

So in answer to the original question...I'd rather have five amazing albums
and at least one orgasmic concert experience before they sell off their tour
bus!

Subject: Faster Than A Fucking Flash OF Light....

Well, the subject has nothing to do with the post, sorry, but I couldn't
think of anything else and I like that line. On to buisiness....I ordered
Real Wild Children and I have to say that I like it, (I liked the way Chris
sings Big Dumb Sex...sounded like sort of a nice version, "I'm gonna do that
dirty little thing to you...") but one thing that bothered me was the way
Soundgarden really didn't talk to the crowd the way they do in the more
recent bootlegs. Do you think they were nervous or just didn't want to?
Well, I also have The Garden Grows and through out the entire thing Chris
will joke and kid around with the crowd between songs. I think it gives it a
more personal tone. Oh well!! Also, on Real Wild Children you can hear this
girl between EVERY FUCKING song yelling, "TAKE YOUR SHIRT OFF!!!!!" Well, I
have to admit that I am 100% hootchie and I do drool over Chris but I would
never be so stupid and disrespectful to yell this the whole time they played.
It REALLY got on my last nerve. Hell, maybe she wasn't even talking to
Chris, I have no idea, but the point I'm trying to make is that it's rude. I
mean, yes Chris is to die for, but to me the music is the heart of the
matter. If it wasn't for the music Kim would probably be a philosophy
teacher, Ben would probably be a...well, I'm not sure what kind of job Ben
could get, Matt would probably be posing for CK, and Chris would probably be
a cook(okay for Shroomy, he would have to work in a naked Red Lobster!!)
Just kidding, I really don't have a clue as to what they would be doing if
they weren't in a band, but you get my point, huh?!?!?!? I just feel that if
you like them for their looks then you don't get the whole package!!! Well,
I'll shut up for now so please, don't mind me!!! Take care and be sweet!!

Stay Cool,
Kelly :)

P.S. The SG songs I sing in the shower: really sick sounding versions of Ty
Cobb, Face Pollution, Kickstand, or Drawing Flies....(if I'm in a hurry); and
Beyond the Wheel, Outshined....(if I have some extra time). Just to add...I
passed by the bathroom the other day and caught my brother singing Little Joe
in the shower except instead of the lyrics "Little Joe run for the border..."
he was singing "Little Joe can I take your order."HAHAHAHAHAHA "Welcome to
Taco Bell, can I help you?" I thought he knew the words!!!! Oh well!!

Subject: 'Short & seeing SG live' tip

On the 27th January I and many others saw a phenomanal show at the Sydney
Showground. It was also the first I'd seen SG live, and I was blown away.
But because i'm only 5"2, I had a few problems getting to the front and
staying there, so after a few attempts (and fended off gropes) I came up
with a scheme to be able to get a good view of the Chris and the band.
While security wasn't watching i managed to get up on the barrier towards
the side of the stage and stay there for about five songs! Only problem
was that whenever a security guard came close, i'd hop down and get my leg
caught in air. I didn't realise it at the time, but i guess that explains
the bruise that goes all the way down the back of my thigh, which still
hasn't gone after 2 weeks! It's quite a good trick because i saw the whole
stage AND the entire crowd. (On average there were about 30 people crowd-
surfing at any given time - even for BHS!)
Anyone else got some 'short & seeing SG live' tips? ( Apart from sitting on
your boyfriend's shoulders.)

It has occured to me (if you will) just how much the cover of Superunknown
fits
the album. I mean CC in a mystical ,(screaming) distorted form, and black
days below. It hit me like a phillips head while listening to 4th of July.
This song is forever
Independent. When the doubled vocals come in is when the cover image comes to
life. The higher part of the two is so slightly slow in the beginning, but
stays home.
It still amazes me how unique this band is.With seemingly everything been
done
before and many, many vocalists peeking at us as great, CC is without a doubt
the absolute best. The way one can hear him breathe and slur (especially on
this album)
is refreshing.
Not to mention the individuality of each member. True arTists.

I guess the fact that grabs me tighter is that listening to this album makes
me think:
This IS the best SG album there is.

Yet I will think the same thing after listening to another one.

When the whole thing blows away
I won't pretend
I'll be going down
For the rest of the ride
While the rest of you harvest the gold

I must say I was pretty impressed with the video clips..... on the RealVideo
page that is. You can forget about the SG live clips though. Not that I was
expecting to see CD-Rom quality stuff, especially not for live stuff, but
the sound wasn't too great, and the images are *very* blurry.... even if you
pick the slides. I think if I just looked at the video without sound, I
wouldn't even know that SG's playing in it. Ben and Matt fans will be very
disappointed as well, 'cos they're not even in it (or if they are, they're
not visible)
The quality for the BUTOW video is, of course, much better, but you have to
have ISDN to see that one, and it takes pretty long to download first
(buffering), since they're showing the entire video. I've tried Real Video
with other music videos and movie clips, mostly from record label sites, and
they're pretty good....

Well, "fortissimo" simply means playing VERY loud.

Have to agree 100%. Total rage against the stupidity of organized
religion which I think is often the result of being raised Catholic
(as I was also). I see nothing sexual in this song. I think you find
the same sentiment in Wooden Jesus on the Temple CD.

I feel a real connection to the lyrics in this song because of my
views
on religion. I'm a heretic and a freethinker - and very proud to say
so....
