the track you want. go into options(?) a select reverse. Then you too can

        Good Morning Somms!

After a night of battling insomnia by reading back issues of computer mags
(if that won't help you sleep, what will?), I fell upon a wonderfully easy
way to listen to music backwards using your very own home computer. I tried
it with (of course) 665 and 667 and IT RULES!! If you have a CD-ROM drive,
QT MoviePlayer 2.5, and some extra drive space, then you too can have the
pleasure of interpreting your favorite "satanic messages" right in the
comfort of your own home. (WARNING: The way I am describing this is the
method I used for Macintosh, and I honestly don't know if it will be
different for Windows or any other OS, although I believe all QT stuff
originates from Apple in the 1st place, so good luck!)

1) First start MoviePlayer with Ultramega OK in your CD drive. Choose Open
or do a Cmnd-O, whichever is your preference. When the window opens asking
you to choose what you want open, double-click on Audio CD 1.

2) Select Track 4 by clicking once. Name your song in the appropriate box.
There is an options button bar that lets you decide things like 8 or 16 bit
recording, and mono or stereo, etc. I recommend beefing everything up as
good as you can, but all of this takes up more and more space. (Both tracks,
recorded in the highest possible quality used approx. 27.1 MB of space,
totally.)

3) Once you have decided all this and have clicked OK in the Options window,
click the button bar that says Convert, and the song is on its merry way to
becoming a Quick Time Movie. It takes a minute or two, so just hang on.

4) When the computer is done converting the format, open up the song/movie
track/whatever and give it a test run to make sure everything came out cool.
Then, using the mouse, drag the counter bar thingy (not the tech. term, but
you know...) to the very end of the song.

5) HERE IS THE TRICK If you hold down the CONTROL button and click and
hold on the REW/FF buttons, they become a slider knob with which you can
play the song (or any QT Movie, I guess) at variable speeds Forward AND
Backward!!!

6) It will take 2 or 3 tries to get the speed right, but once you do, you
can hear Chris's *secret messages* as clear as if he were right there with
you. Well not that good, but it works. Try it on SG or the Beatles or Hotel
California, or any Death Metal you might have about that is rumored to have
special hidden or reverse lyrics.

I hope this works for everybody. I'm sure there are better ways to do this,
but I was pretty proud of myself for my deductive reasoning, and it is
something accesible to most of us for free, so I thought I would share with
the group like a good kiddie. Don't say I never did anything for you! :)

Have fun, and don't be corrupted by the messages
        A Different Seth

BTW: If anyone caught Loveline on Friday (the inferior TV version) you may
have noticed once when they cut to a commercial, the background tune was
Hands All Over. Cool Shit, now if they would just play the old videos!

songs that I tend to skip on albums: half, never named
B-sides and others that I tend to skip: MOTORCYCLE LOOP, Big Dumb Sex
(remix), Exit Stonehenge...

comical songs: one minute of silence (even if it is a cover of nothing, it's
the THOUGHT of it that makes it funny), 665>667, Big Dumb Sex, Kickstand,
Rhinosaur (the title, remember Matt's explanation? "It's a nose sore, get
it? Rhino means nose and saur, well we just changed the spelling
(laughing)"-not exact quote, but pretty darn close I believe...), Sub Pop
Rock City, She's a Politician

I also think that the Johnny Cash version of Rusty Cage is amusing, when you
compare it to the original version...

I have yet to get sick of BHS (probably because I really became an SG fan
after it had already hit its heaviest rotation...), and I probably would be
sick of BUTOW if it wasn't my favorite song of DOTU...

yeah, that's the correct URL. I just tried it, and it worked. For those who
don't have web access or don't have time to browse, here's what is says
about the winner: (best fan-produced site)

"It's disturbing how comprehensive this site is--is Chris Cornell

music rag on earth, censored clips from the "Pretty Noose" video,
guitar and bass tablatures, comprehensive discography/videography,
band history, and transcripts of on-line chats? And this just skims the
surface. If you worship Soundgarden, here's your Mecca, kids. "

Can't argue with that :) Congrats Seth; your site now joins the ranks of MTV

I just wanted to clarify that I do not "hate" the songs, spoonman or black
hole sun. But I am extremely sick of hearing them. And the more I think
about it as I read your comments on this list, I don't think it is because of
the overplay by radio and mtv. I mean I could listen to mind riot and
drawing flies, or loud love and hands all over , or whatever, over and over
and over and over. Sometimes I play RTYW and Somewhere over and over and I
never get sick of these songs. Hmmmmmmm I never thought about why but these
songs are different than Spoonman and BHS, anyone know what I mean? Also I
am really surprised how many people don't like Kickstand.... it's almost like
a great intermission during this superb concert/album.

I rounded out my SG CD collection over christmas acquiring UMOK, LTL, and

Saw Hype! the other day. If you haven't seen this, please try to, even on
video. It really paints a different (and I've been told, more truthful)
picture of the Seattle scene. And it will make you want to go to a live
show right away.
I was very excited to read seth will keep the page after graduation. Made
me hold my arms in a V for a good 20 seconds. Not that someone else
couldn't have done a fine job with the page, but it just seems _right_ to
have seth at the helm.

Caryn mentioned the similarities between "Karaoke" and PJ's "Mankind." I
agree that "Mankind" works out better because Eddie and the boys fully
embrace the cheese. It's such a catchy tune, but I laugh every time I
listen to that song. Karaoke, to its credit is more of an angry reaction
to that trend. I bet every time Gavin Rossdale or Scott Weiland here
those songs, they just tap their feet and think "hey I should knock this
tune off on the next album."

Oh yeah, someone implied a difference in crowd content at the Chicago
shows depending on the radio station that "sponsored" each show. Is this
a widely recognized phenomenon? Are shows sponsored by the more "popular"
radio station usually frequented by more of those alterna-teen types?

Subject: last aust date revisited..

As is usually the case, during the course of my long day at work, I thought
back on the night that was ultima, and remembered a couple of other things.
One song they did that I forgot til now was An Unkind, which was really
fantastic live. And when they came out to do their encore, they thanked
their "Aussie mates" for joining them on the tour, and Tim Rogers came out,
and him & Chris hugged and kissed eachother. It was a beautiful moment..

When I got home today, I had a message on my answering machine from my
friend who works for Polygram records, who I tried many times to get in
touch with prior to these two Perth shows. She said she had some news for
me. I almost started shaking... I saw her in the pit area last night, and
I was willing her to turn around and look my way. She seemed to be looking
at the crowd in the seats, but not quite where I was. Anyway, she had
managed to get a backstage pass for me!! She was looking for me in the
crowd, but couldn't see me, so when she went backstage for the meet & greet,
she made some jokes to try & lighten things up (she said the band looked
pretty uncomfortable - they had to meet some radio contest winners), then
she thrust some photos at them, and she had them all signed "To Georgia".
What a woman. So, even thought I missed out on meeting them (for now), I
have a small memoir of something that could have been, but never was.

And as a side note that may be of some minor interest to someone out there,
at the BDO, over 40 people were taken to hospital with injuries, one with
serious neck injuries from being crushed at the front of the stage, there
were three heroin overdoses, with one ending in death.

Subject: Re: Pigeonhed (*long* -ish Kerrang review)

Futher to Greg and Caryn's posts on the new Pigeonhed album, the following
review was in today's Kerrang mag.

There's only a brief mention of Mr Thayil, so anyone not interested can skip
this post if they wish. But Steve Fisk and Soundgarden do go back a long way
(remixing quite a few of their songs, for anyone who doesn't know) so I
thought I'd post it anyway....

Seth, feel free to add it to your award-winning website!

Pigeonhed
The Full Sentence (Sub Pop SP373)

"We've been prattling on about how much of a genius Shawn Smith is now for a
good few years. Firstly on Brad's Shame album, when he was chiefly
responsibleb for the not inconsiderable achievement of making a member of
Pearl Jam - guitarist Stone Gossard, in this case - sound funky. Secondly,
on Satchel's two exquisite albums. Aand thirdly, via his most esoteric
project, Pigeonhed.

"Together with producer Steve Fisk, Smith made the trippy, left-field
Pigeonhed album in '93. Four years later, they've once again retired to a
Seattle studio to concoct a a follow-up. This time though, they've had the
likes of Alice In Chains' Jerry Cantrell and Soundgarden's Kim Thayil
popping in with their guitars - which might suggest that The Full Sentence
is some sort of all-star grunge hoe-down, but inevitably means nothing of
the kind.

"Instead, it's moulded by a combination of fat funk grooves, alternately
orchestral and ambient electrobeats, rich guitar work and Smith's fantastic
voice, which is deep, dark and soulful when he's singing something
spiritual, and assumes a rich falsetto when he's singing about shagging.

"Imagine if The Artist Formerly Known As Prince were to have been born white
and decided to remake Purple Rain as the soundtrack to a David Lynch movie,
and you're halfway to understanding the scope, and the inherent power, of
The Full Sentence.

"The opening It's Like The Man Said and Fire's Coming Down are blissed out
and brooding. Marry Me and Glory Bound are gospel-fired and soul stacked;
while 31st July is so insidiously groovy, it surely had even Smith's
well-proportioned booty shaking magnificently.

"Of course, if you absolutely have to be assaulted by huge riffs and
todger-shrivelling vocal, you will despise The Full Sentence. But for those
who dug Shame and The Family, this'll do nicely, thank you very much."

Also included was this fact file.....

Formed: 1993 in Seattle
Previous LPs: Pigeonhed (1993)
Biggest hit: Oooh no
Current line-up: Shawn Smith (vocals, guitars, keyboards, drums)/ Steve Fisk
(keyboards, loops, 'noise' etc)
Studio Vibe: Good-natured boffinery interruped by star mates turning up for
a jam
Cover Artwork: An angel and a devil balancing on a set of scales
Subject matter: Love and sex and 'get your asses on down, motherf**kers'
Next move: Smith is working with Stone Gossard on the second Brad album,
while Fisk is producing LA band Geraldine Fibbers' second album

Sounds pretty good to me. Whoever it was (sorry) who said they were looking
for new music to get into, Pigeonhed might be worth checking out.

I have to say that Superunknown is pretty much the only album that has a real
'skip factor' for me... I have to agree with Caryn, BHS grates on my nerves
nowadays, the constant overplay has forced me to skip this track forward
almost everytime I hear it... 'Superunknown' just does nothing for me,
'Kickstand' is a short blast of noise, but at least it's better than 'No
Attention'... 'Fresh Tendrils' just doesn't grab me in any way... 'Fell On
Black Days', after hearing the original paled in comparison...

But I still play the album for the immense 'Mailman', 'Fourth Of July',
'TDITTL', 'Like Suicide' and 'She Likes Surprises'...

I've always thought this album was too long, too polished... I dunno, for
some reason this album doesn't do much for me... DOTU rectified this slightly

Could you delve deeper into this please? Can you tell me why you feel A&M

I totally agree with you here. It was a great article and the great part
was that they asked the band some pretty frank questions and they
responded as honestly as they could. But I still left the article puzzled
by the facts presented in it. Like I was saying, for the longest time I was
under the impression that DOTU was one of the most successful albums of last
year. Then all of the sudden, by way of the MSN article, I find out that
DOTU has only sold barely over a million? This came as a shock to me. I
mean, for the last few months we have been bombarded by articles citing
the low album sales of such mainstays like R.E.M. and Pearl Jam for example,
but SG was never mentioned along those lines. In fact, in a recent
Rolling Stone, they were talking about this slump in album sales, but
they specifically mentioned Soundgarden as being the exception, stating
that the album was highly successful. But in the end, it really doesn't
matter. I love the band no matter what. But unlike some people, who would
like SG to be all theirs, I am the opposite. I want *everyone* to hear them.
To be really honest, I secretly would like to go to all the mainstream
following-the-trend music fans, tap them on the shoulder and say "Hey
listen to *this* <insert favorite SG album here>.

Ok I'm done.

        Whoa

I am really surprised at how many people disliked Kickstand so much. I
always thought it was a highlight on SU. I know we all get our opinions, so
I am just posting on behalf of this quick little gem.

For me, Kickstand is a break from needing to ponder the inner meaning of SG
lyrics and music. Don't get me wrong, this deepness is half the reason I
like SG, but sometimes you just need to rock, you know? Besides, on all the
boots and SU B-Sides it comes off as a great warmer-upper for concerts.

Just my .02 to boost the self-esteem of one of my faves.

Subject: SG B-Sides
From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

I was just thinking when I was considering the 'Songs We Hate' thing that Sg
don't seem to be able to do a poor cover... I mean, what's wrong with them?
They should have butchered one cover at least by now... 'Into The Void' is
stunning, perfectly SG, bettered only by the recent Kyuss version... ;) 'Come
Together', 'Girl U Want', even the straight faced run through of 'Big
Bottom'... All unexpected, all perfect for the band...

Even the Goddamn B-sides are amazing! 'Heretic', 'Fresh Deadly Roses', 'HIV
Baby', 'Kyle Petty', 'SubPop Rock City'... they're all as good as any song
from any album...

So why has it all turned so bad?? The DOTU singles have seen a pretty poor
example of B-sides, IMHO... 'Splice Of Space Jam' anyone? A couple of live
tracks which have been released before, the only decent track was 'She's a
Politician', again not a new track...

What's happened to the good ole BMF days? Releasing CD singles with one
B-Side, rereleasing tracks, it's just not the same!!

I really do think that what they're doing right now isn't on... I mean, I'd
be the first to rush out and by the latest SG single, but not if the B-sides
are as poor as they've been, and I'm *NOT* buying a single with no new songs
on it... Yeah, I love SG, but I'm not going to follow them blindly...

There's a lot of SOMMSters out there in the US desperately trying to get hold
of the BUTOW single, some paying big bucks to get it... I'm sending a couple
across myself, but what are they going to get??? Two live tracks, a wierd
instrumental jam, interesting, but only the first time you listen to it, and
luckily one saving grace, the Moby remix of 'Dusted'... You get a poster too,
but Hell, I'd rather listen to band than look at them... although some SOMMS
Hootchies out there would have troubled souls if they had to make that
choice... ;)

Subject: ..I may lay my crowded head...

Hey all you SOMMSTERS...

To reply to a bunch of intresting threads...(sorry if this seems like old
news, but I've been busy)...

It was the BMF album that got me hooked on SG. I bought it as a teenager
because of Outshined and because all the guys I was in a band with at the
time raved about it (and also LTL)...the things that drew me most heavily
into the SG sound was Matt's incredibly unique time feel (and the way
that he creatively works his own ideas into more traditionally
metal-oriented grooves) and Chris's powerful vocal presence. BMF to me
is the definitive SG album. It has a uniform, cohesive sound, yet at the
same time the guys are definitely pushing things in new directions.
Songs like Drawing Flies and Mind Riot have really unique feels but they
sound like they belong right with everything else. And like Seth, it was
JCP that pushed me to find as much SG material as I could.

Funniest song goes to Circle of Power, scariest to 4th of July (for
personal reasons), sexiest to Mailman, happiest is a tie between Dusty
(for it's lyrics), and believe it or not, Drawing Flies (just listen to
the groove! It just kind of rolls along in a happy way, to me at least)

I would prefer 3 or 4 more albums and touring than 10 albums. I have
never seen SG live (oh, the agony!).

Congrats Seth!!!

One of my current favorite SG tunes: Cold Bitch. Heard it for the first
time on a Spoonman single. Isn't it interesting how in the verses Chris
sings really high and intense, and he totally cools off for the chorus
(in your heart i'd freeze) part? The change is really dramatic to me - I
really love how the parts of that song fuse together.

enough for now -

Lori

SGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSG
Hello out there in SG land.

Well there are a couple of SG songs I could possibly live without I hate
to admit. One is Circle Of Power. In my opnion Hiro should stick to his
bass. I can't get in to the song no matter how hard I try. Another is
Bens' Half. Just doesn't go well with me. And then their is Jerry
Garcias Finger. When I first got Songs From The SU and it got to #4 I
was sitting there waiting for Chris to start his singing. 1 min
nothing, 2 min nothing, 3 min still nothing and then 4 min and its over.
I have to say I was mortified. As long as the good continues to out way
the bad I will be satisfied.

Now on to the shirt thread...
My shirt would be for the song Rinosaur. It isn't my fav but it is the
one that I always get this image from. OK here it is.
Chris would be riding a rino(rodeo style) and Ben Matt and Kim would be
on the side doing something. Like maybe Ben spitting on something or
someone, Matt standing there looking happy with his pants down, and Kim
stroking his beard and holding a beer. And the back of the shirt would
have the lyrics for the whole song because the lyrics sound so cool.
Pretty stupid huh? Yall asked.

Congratulations Seth!!! You definitly deserve it.

I just got my SG fan club welcome package in the mail and I must say I
am a tad disappointed in its meager contents. I got a b/w band picture
that I had already gotten off of Seths image page. I got a band bio and
discography which I had already had. If I read one more time how SG got
togather I think I an going to totally wig out. The only thing that I
got that was of any use to me was a SG pin that says "Soundgarden". OH
yeah and I also got a guitar pick. To bad I don't play the guitar.
Personally I feel jipped. I hope that the info the fan club provides is
worth my $12.00. What have other people got? Just curious.

Sorry I write to much. But being a NEWBIE I just have so much feelings
and thoughts that I haven't been able to express yet ;)

To bad there isn't some way to have a sort of test before you are able
to join the SOMMS page.(questions about how they got togather, past and
present members, etc...) Or where you at least have to read through
Seths Page before you can join. Because if everyone knows the minor
facts about SG and everyone knows that everyone knows this stuff it
would save alot of people some embarresment and fustration.

SG SOMMS page elders please be patient with us newbies...

Congatulations again Seth. And thank God your gonna stick around.

cases of Trung Tran (or whatever) and Kevin. These are two of the stupidest

people don't deserve to listen to SG. Hey Kevin, what are you, the fucking

country music. As for you Trung Tran, it makes me want to vomit when I see
people like you defending this stupid fuck. Personally, I would rather read
a post filled with someone verbally bashing him rather than you defending
him or about how Black Hole Sun was really the song that did it for them for

Subject: something

I just read my mail from the last two days, and almost half of it was of
people picking on Caryn or her trying to defend herself. Please, just drop
the subject. It's just not fair to take something someone said (and I even
think it was only half-serious) and turn it into gratuitously vicious civil
war. Just remember that Caryn is only one person, and that the people
complaining about her and blaming her for actions they decide to take, are,
well, a great many more than one person. EVERYBODY MAKES MISTAKES or words
something wrong at onetime or another, and it's not fair to rip out their
jugular for it. Also, as Vince so wisely suggested, if something someone said
is really bothering you, E-Mail them privately. And, for the people who
decide to unsubscribe from the list because of some stupid little thing
someone said that may have offended them, well then you probably shouldn't
have been here in the first place if you can't be mature enough to handle it
in a civil way. My humble opinion.

AND NOW FOR SOUNDGARDEN CONTENT!
I've got a few questions:
I recently saw "A Night to Rememer" (Live '94) in a catalog and was
wondering if it's worth the thirty bucks they want for it. Is it more like
Motorvision, or Louder Than Live?
In that same catalog, I also saw about five imported Soundgarden
posters. Are these really worth anything more than the regular posters, or do
they just say that so they can justify the extra four bucks you have to pay
for them?
And for Seth - I read about how much you dislike DOTUS. I also think you
mentioned something about where you had written this, on the page or
something. I'm interested in your opinion of the album, and if you have
already recorded your reason for disliking it someplace else, could you
please direct me?

Congrats to Seth!

have archive supplies advertised in there.

anyway, last night i was bored and decided to actually go through the ads

wow, was i surprised by the selection of sg stuff!

if you're looking for rare sg stuff (or any other band), this is a
magazine i thoroughly recommend. if you're new to collecting or haven't
heard of it, it is *the* collector's forum. you have a certain level of
security when you order from a dealer who advertises in there because the
magazine will actually follow up on complaints against unscrupulous
dealers or rip off artists.

some of the sg stuff i found was...

o posters
o Into the Upside for $10
o the downunderon the upside cd for $35
o a never-used matt cameron drumstick for $10
etc etc etc etc.

there were people with these items for more money than this, but i was
amazed at the price range and selection for items that have been described
on this list often. if you live in a city without a good record store or
are looking for something specific, this is a good way to find that one
item. the magazine is generally available at good newsstands or tower

cracks about the inane stuff I post, I've done my time on this list and
therefore earned the right to post meaningless crap. ;-) If any of you had
posted last year, you would have been RIGHTFULLY flamed to hell and back. I
know that we're all trying to be nice and get along here... but I'm tired of
it. The "has alot of time on their hands" post was too much. As a fully
authorized SOMMS deputy, I'm afraid that I have to announce this:
***Post anything like that again, and I'll kill you.***
Oops... that was a KTMS post. I meant to say, don't post things like
that anymore please... or else I'll have to get the SOMMS Sheriff (thuggy) to
kill you. Killing is out of my jurisdiction. I can only break kneecaps and
such. *sigh*

Two more quick things... as to the "scariest song" thread, I don't find
any of SG's stuff frightening. Exhilarating, yes... scary, no. My favorite
song for the last month has been "New Damage" with Brian May. I had thought
that "Beyond the Wheel" gave me chills... but THIS song just knocks me over.
Chris really went off on it vocally. I'd *love* to hear him do it live...
just like this version. =)
The second thing is in reference to the SiCA webpage. I know I had
posted that I'd have it finished by today... but I'm running into some snags,
so I'll work on it this weekend, and have it up on Monday. Thanks to
everyone who wrote and asked about it. =) You guys are the greatest!

Well kiddies... I've finally finished the freaking website.
Sethmeister... I *really* have a new admiration for what you've done with
the unofficial site. The SiCA page was one of the biggest pains I've ever
had (well, except for my CAR BREAKING DOWN on a FRIDAY NIGHT)... but as they
say (whoever in the hell "they" are), it was a labor of love. Don't expect
anything fancy, kiddies. The major differences are that the links are now
clickable pictures (ohhhhh), there's different pages for different links
(ooooooh), and I've added a guest book and counter (ahhhhhhh). Plus some
more smart-ass comments, a thank you page... and a BRAND NEW picture of Dena
(aka Geek Girl, aka Blessed SOMMS Goddess, aka crazy shirt/hat making woman).
The picture of Dena is from a *very* late night ice cream sundae and whipped
cream expedition that her, Vikki, Ryan and I had one evening while we were in
Seattle last October. Is she drunk in it? Mmmmmmmaybe? Mmmmmaybe not. ;-)
Anyway... update your bookmarks, kiddies... 'cause I changed the URL, too.
If you try to access the old one, I put up a little message directing you to
the right spot. Oh... and *please* sign the damned guestbook. I really
didn't care if we had one or not, but my mistress Dena commanded me to put it
up. Ummm... she's gonna smack me for saying that. ;-) Anyway... MORE
PICTURES OF CHRIS... and I'll hopefully have a few new surprises in the next
couple of weeks. I haven't updated the Chris Cornell is God site yet,
though. But give me a couple of days before sending me life-threatening
e-mail, ok? Thank yew, and good night.

Here's what the critics have said about the new and improved SiCA site:

"It was the most intellectually stimulating experience I've ever had in my
life. I am now smarter for having checked it out." ~ Kim Thayil
"I don't know how to turn a computer on, so I kicked the monitor until it
shattered... and then I spat all over the fucking thing." ~ Ben Shepherd
"Oh, such pretty pretty pictures..." ~ Matt Cameron
"....and I've already written 3 songs about the SiCA site since I first
checked it out this afternoon! It's going to be a source of never-ending
inspiration to me, I can tell already. I'm going to recommend it to all of
my fellow rock stars. I also found it highly erotic, and I'm looking forward
to meeting it's creator, Shroom Girl. I feel the need to get down on my
KNEES and thank her for the mentally masturbatory qualities that she has
implemented into the site... and all in my honor. It's the greatest
compliment I've ever received...." ~ Chris Cornell

listening to your hard rock radio station, but all they're playing is songs
you don't like by bands you don't like and throwing in the occasional song
you just can't identify. Of course this makes it worse and you feel even
more tired. You're finally down to your last exercise that takes about 5
minutes to do and all of a sudden you here "Follow me into the desert as
thirsty as you are...." A broad happy smile appears on your face and the
last 5 minutes of exercise are done without a problem. SG just gives you
that extra bit of energy needed to finished whatever is incomplete. Whether
it be physical, emotional, or mental. Has anybody else noticed this?? It's
like no matter how drained or depressed you are, SG just lifts you back up.

i know many people who actually could run this thing. Definetly not as

My question is: who cares if you can run a list? This isn't a contest.
It's not about "who knows more about Soundgarden" or "who has a better

Hey... there's been a lot of talk about how sick of BHS people are.
So I just wanted to say that just because a song gets a lot of airplay
and mainstream attention - that doesn't change it. I mean, BonJovie
could do a cover of it (Heaven forbid - I'm only kidding) and it could
be played 24 hrs a day and it would still be the same song. True,
there are some songs out there that the first couple times I heard
them I liked them, and then after I'd heard them about 50 times I'd
just change the station when they came on. But not BHS, or any
SG song for that matter - they're all too special, too *good* for me
to ever get tired of. Once a favorite song always a favorite song.
In fact, it's great when my favorite songs get a lot of airplay and atten=
tion. It makes me happy.
As far as BHS being something that everybody can listen to - I
disagree. I know people - some of my friends, actually - who
referred to it as "creepy" - especially after the video came out.
Of course then I got into huge arguements w/ them... but my
point is I see absolutely no similarity between BHS and "Only
Wanna Be With You" by Hootie, for example.
And one more thing... on a few occasions I've been accused of
being a trendy (not by anyone on the list) for saying that a song
such as BHS (a popular song released as a single) was one of my
favorites. Well, that's the biggest bunch of bullshit I've ever heard
in my life, and I don't really let it get to me anymore. But one
thing I am not and will never be is a trendy. And people like that
aren't gonna make me hesitant to express my opinions. And I
wonder if this ever occurred to them - maybe the band released
BHS as a single because they *knew* it was one of their best.
And I'm sure that CC's feelings about BHS haven't changed
because it's one of their most popular songs, or else he wouldn't
play beautiful, heartfelt solo versions of it at every show.
Okay, I'm finished. Again, sorry for the long post. :)

"I don't feel like feeling...feeling like you"

Due to the petty bickering and childish games being played on this list the
last few days...I just had to say that there actually exists acts of
kindness and non pettiness being done by members of our little community.
They need to be acknowledged. Don't think this list contains nothing but
hateful childlike behaviour. The vast majority of us don't think/act that
way. I think some of you need some perspective on how you're acting. Take
a step back and see how you're coming across...

"money can't give what the truth takes away"

**hmph** why am I bothering to say anything... If the constant bickering
hasnt exhausted some of you by now...you must be feeding on it. Have
fun...some of us won't be playing the 'holier than thou' version of the home
game.

"no one sings like you anymore"

Anyway, if you've read this far and don't hate me :) I just received some
of the most *amazing* works of art that I've ever seen. I am so happy to
have these items in my collection and due to the kindness and (in my eyes)
total sainthood of a fellow sommster... I have these "uber-cool" records in
my possesion that mean *so* much to me. All I can say is...thanks, you're
the best :-)

All are coloured vinyl. Stacked on top of each other...they look exactly
like a roll of life savers. One contains the absolute coolest colour of
red I've ever seen. It almost looks edible :) The others remind me of an
orange sorbet type colour and a yellow one that screams "Lemon" :)
Hmmm...ya know, all of them would really look cool in handwritten black
magic marker :)

Not only is this some of the best eye candy I've ever experienced...the
sound!!!!! Oh my gawd!!!!

"the clarity is chilling"

I thought I was listening to badmotorfinger for the first time!!!! I heard
things I've never heard before. Different frequencies are enhanced via
vinyl than over CD. I'm not sure of the technicalities...but there is a
warmth to the sound of a record that a CD will never come close to matching.
Also, there is no experience like opening a piece of vinyl...smelling the
wax :-) Feeling the heavy texture of the paper lyric inserts :-) Looking
at all the cool extra art that exists in the packaging. I was in total
nirvana :-) I have listened to every SG release on vinyl cept Ultramega OK
(coming very soon) and Screaming Life, cuz I refuse to play my copy :)
...and I hope each one of you can experience the rich sound of vinyl
Soundgarden. *Every* release sounds so much better on vinyl.

The gatefold of Superunknown ("so the midwest kids can clean their pot" - K.
Thayil) contains the Reyza artwork that graced the Summer 1994 Tour Poster.
Weird shit :) The 'space jam' and/or "Jerry Garcia's Finger" (I'm blankin)
part of AITS was inspired by that work of art and from the bands meeting
members of the Greatful Dead during the Dead's Seattle show in '95.
Speaking of Space Jam, I finally listened to it (thanks justin) and unless
you're into some trance techno stuff (chemical brothers, orb, prodigy)...I
can see why people don't like it.

Lastly, I just saw the Flower video....big shout out to Mr. Kleemola :-) If
you're a minimalist SG fan...it's well worth the download time :-)
Excellent job Geoff !

Full On,

OK, I'm letting out my secret. I've given a few other people head starts on
this, and was hesitant about sharing this with the people who don't yet know
about it, but, what the heck! I don't have the money to order half the stuff
I want in there, anyway, so I might as well share it with other people who
do. If you want great Soundgarden stuff, write to:

Hopkins, MN 55343
Or call:
(612) 942-7895
Or fax:
(612) 942-5341

They should send you a catalog - but don't be too impatient. They take quite
a while to send things. I live in Plymouth, MN, and it took them a month to
send me my SG shirt and poster (what even miffed me off more was that the
poster was discontinued!)
when their company is 5 miles away from me! But, then again, I did order it
around Christmas, so they might be a little quicker for you guys.
This is one of the best things that could happen to a SG fan, though, if you
want rare recordings, backstage passes, bootleg videos and recordings, rare
posters, promo photos, clothing, stickers, keychains, etc. It is very much
worth the wait. =)
I will say, though, that the "Night to Remember" thingie is not in that
catalog - I haven't ordered anything from those guys yet. But, if I do end up
ordering it, I'll be sure and give you a review and address!

By the way, what's so quotatious about my name? =)

Have fun!

the original demo of fobd (recorded by chris at home, I imagine)
sounded greatly different to the current incarnation on superunknown.
below is an extract from matt's interview with _modern drummer_ in 1994
that talks briefly about fobd. although I'm not sure that a new bass line
was the only change, considering the huge differences between the demo
version on the single and the album version itself. my guess is that
there were quite a few re-writes and transformations between the two.

"Cameron's passion for the new record didn't develop, though,
until late in the recording stages. "We weren't really blown away when we
first heard the demos for 'Black Days'," Matt explains, "because we hadn't
made it into a Soundgarden song yet. But Ben added a great bass part that
fit with the vocal melody, and Kim (Thayil, guitarist) put in some harmony
parts on the end that took the song into another gear. Chris has written
a lot of songs over the years that we've never been able to sink our teeth
into until now, songs like 'Fell On Black Days' that have more of a pop
arrangement. And the result proved to be songs that aren't necessarily
more accessible, but have more depth and are more musical than anything
we've done before. Still, they didn't sound like Soundgarden songs for me
until all the tracks were down."
