Subject: THE SONG

in response to "the song that turned me to Soundgarden" (something like
that) thread...

...surprisingly enough it was NOT Spoonman... 'twas actually 4th of July...
I hadn't heard much Soundgarden yet then, only BHS and the intro to My Wave
(which was what made me decide that they might be worth listening to..) and
maybe a couple others... but when I heard 4th of July I instantly decided
that it must be the greatest song around (or at of them)... just the
atmosphere/lyrics/emotion/tone/etc.... it took actually most of the rest of
Superunknown (Superunknown itself=97the song=97to get me to buy the TAB)=
 before
I really got into them, but 4th of July was the starter) ... Spoonman was
2nd place, of course...

and actually what really turned me into the SG fan I am today was: SOMMS!
Yes, this very mailing list! I actually didn't even have any SG CD's when I
joined (I listened to my friend's), just the TAB for Superunknown... it took
you folks to make me the demented psychotic Soundgarden-worshipper I am
today! THANX!

this mailing list doesn't just support SG fans, it CREATES them!

I too have recently been to a concert in Australia. It was the first
Soundgarden concert I've been to, and one of the greatest concerts I've
been to (and I've been to a bundle). I would have to say that Soundgarden
certainly know how to mix up the material. Even though they're promoting
DOTU, an even amount came from the last three albums, and a few assorted
songs from the earlier releases. Highlights for me? 1. Hearing a great
version of My Wave after the band had just warmed up on Spoonman and Let Me
Drown. 2. Chris doing a quiet yet brilliant solo version of Black Hole Sun,
and then the band running on near the end of it and ripping straight into a
perfect performance of Outshined. 3. The encore which included an excellent
Jesus Christ Pose and also Mailman, which absolutely rocked!

ok well, i can't even remember the setlist, cos the whole concert was like a
dream, it was just a blur. it was pretty similar to the one described in
that legendary concert review, done a week or so ago.

well, my friend and i got to festival hall about an hour early and just sat
around. we could hear the soundchecks of sg and you am i. anyway, the
doors opened around 7:30, and we came in to hear this band playing, i don't
even know who they were. then you am i came on. i like them quite a bit,
but it was so hot in there i just wanted them to finish so sg would come on,
cos i knew once they came on, i wouldn't care about the heat. after you am
i we went to get as wet as possible in the toilets. we were attempting to
buy a drink, when they came on, my friend wanted to wait and get a drink,
but i dragged her into the crowd. we didn't get into the mosh pit, cos
frankly i'm too wimpy. i don't want to die at a concert. have you ever
noticed that sg fans are tall, it's so annoying! i could still see cc
though. they only did the one encore, but he said they didn't do any at the
bdo. i thik that's all i write,

HI Everyone.
First Song that I heard that turned me on to Soundgarden? Well the first
soundgarden song I ever heard I think was Spoonman when I was about 11
or 12. Whenever it would come on MTV I would turn my TV all the way up
and jump around my house like I was an idiot. Hey I as only 12. OK I
admit I'm 16 now and whenever I hear Spoonman I still get the urge to
jump around. It depends on rather or not I am alone if I give into that
urge. Even though I loved Spoonman I still wasn't a fanatic. That didn't
come into play till a good friend of mine let me borrow his SU. I was in
love from that moment on. I went straight out and bought BMF-my favorite
CD to date, and then all of the past and present CDS.

I'm still searching for LOUDEST LOVE!! Any one that has any info on
where I can find this PLEASE I BEG OF YOU let me know.

From: Georgia Kennedy <georgia@q-net.net.au>
Subject: Perth BDO & Soundgarden

Hi all. I've just returned home from the farce that was the Big Day Out.
After going to the Big Day Out every year (except the first, because it went
to Sydney only), todays effort was really disappointing. All I can say
about it is that I'm glad there'll be no more, because I wouldn't go again.
At previous BDO's in Perth, they've limited admission to about 12 - 15 000
people. Today, there was no door limit, and we heard Offspring say there
was over 30 000 people there today. And that was the problem. We decided
that there were so many kids and virile young men there today, that it'd be
safer and more comfortable to stay at the back - and anyway, we have tickets
for the Tuesday night show at the Superdome with You Am I.

Anyway, down to the important issue - How were Soundgarden? They were
pretty good. It took the boys about half their set to warm up, but once
they did, they were really great. Offspring were playing on Stage 2
beforehand, so my friend and I wandered into the Stage 1 area to get a good
vantage point for the boys. So we got a good spot, waited for Offspring to
finish, and by the time SG came on, I reckon the whole 30 000 people were
pouring into where we were - it was incredibly uncomfortable, and really
dangerous at times.

The set opened with (surprise, surprise) Spoonman, which sounded pretty
good. They then kicked into SWMGEC, which was, unfortunately, not great.
There just didn't seem to be any spark happening there, which was hardly
surprising, because of the heat. Then came Let Me Drown and Pretty Noose,
which were Okay, then My Wave, which wasn't good. Ty Cobb was next, and it
was from here that things started firing up a bit! Chris did BHS solo next,
and, unfortunately, opened with the line "Lets put this one to bed", which
is I recall what he has said at previous shows (according to some of the
fantastic reviews sent by other Aussies). Other than that, BHS was the
highlight - it was performed perfectly, sounding incredible in the still,
hot evening. Outshined next, Rusty Cage (really good), BUTOW (fantastic),
Search and Destroy (great), and finally, Slaves and Bulldozers, which was
incredible.

Finally, trying to get home. Nightmare. 'Nuff said about that. Otherwise,
Roll on Tuesday! Thanks for indulging me, I know this isn't a great review,
but it's all I can muster after standing on my feet in 40 degree heat all day.

Subject: Threads...
From: "Shawn David Kennedy" <kenned79@pilot.msu.edu>

Well, I figured I better get in on at least a couple of these threads that
have been going around on the list. For the "Song that did it for me" thread,
I would have to say it was "Rusty Cage" that really got me hooked. The first
Soundgarden song I ever heard was "Hands All Over", and I thought that it was
really cool, but it wasn't until "Rusty Cage" that I really REALLY got into
them. And on the "Sexiest Song" thread, I would have to agree with Lance and
say "All Night Thing". That is just a really smooth song. But for just a
hardcore SEXiest song, I would have to say "Big Dumb Sex". Even though the
song is a parody of a sex song, it still has just a raw, primal quality to it
that makes you feel DIRTY. (and that is a good thing!) Well, I just thought I
would throw my ideas at 'cha.

there is nothing original to say to them cuz theyve heard everything before

Q2: Where is the interview that talks about them reading this list?? Couldnt

so that means our chances of a triple album about a young prodigy who

how can ANY band that is made up of true artists tell you where they are
going next... if you're an alterna-band in a can of course you can state
with firmness what your next record will sound like because it's PRODUCT,
not art.

peter buck from r.e.m. has been saying that their next album will have "more
guitars" for over ten years now, in answer to similar questions from the
media. ;-)

i don't need to know what it will sound like... i just want there to be more
albums, one a year will do nicely, i'll listen to whatever soundgarden have
to say. may not like it, may love it, but art is unpredictable at best.

Which brings up an interesting topic. Which would you prefer from Soundgarden
if you had a choice (which none of us do thank god)

A- 10 more *premium-fan-fucking-tastic* Soundgarden albums, BUT "NO MORE"
tours period (save the occasional surprise appearance)

OR

B- Two or three more albums and lots of touring?

Personally, I'd take A. I only get to see them once every 3 or 4 years
(approx) but I listen daily. Therefore, anything they would provide to soothe
through my speakers would be a Godsend and a blessing. I love what they do, &
all I ask for is more. Besides, SG's worst productions are 100X better than
everybody elses best effort.

Just a thought.

seems like Chris is hinting all over the place! He was in LA in December,
and while on a radio interview said hey MAY do more touring. That would be
great! I wonder if he'd stick to the smaller venue-thing, or do arenas. SG
really doesn't like to do arenas, tho(that's whut chris said; DO NOT flame
me). So let's hope they will 'turn back around' in the direction of the
States again--I have been deprived enough of not seeing SG play in the flesh.

eeeww. Ten more albums? Unless they can be *extremely* creative, and I
really stress that, then I'm for it. I'm not for any 'greatest hits' albums,
tho. I'm the lister who's never seen SG play in my life, so I wouldn't mind
only a few more albums--as long as I had lots of chances to see them play.
This has been one of my dreams in the last few years. I WANT TO TOUCH CHRIS

That sounds like a false dilemma to me! Are you one of those kids that
played "what would you rather do, stick a red hot needle in your eye,

Anyway, if I had to choose, I'd take the 10 albums.

Well to continue this thread.... The first song I heard by SG that got me
hooked was Hands All Over, which I loved immediately. This was back in '89,
my 2nd year of college and I bought Louder Than Love right away and played it
over and over. LTL is still my favorite album maybe because it was my first.
Then of course when BMF came out I was blown away and love every song on
that album, especially mind riot and drawing flies. Same with SU.

But what I want to know is.... although I love any and every song by SG
because I love their sound, are there any SG songs that you just cannot
listen to anymore? Not that this song is bad but I cannot listen to Spoonman
anymore. I am really really sick of this song (maybe because it was and is
so overplayed and it has become such a mainstream 'yeah, I know Soundgarden
they play that song Spoonman right?' AAARRRRRGH!).

So what song are you sort of sick of by SG? What song, if any, do you fast
forward over when listening to an album?

while it is of course completely out of line for me to suggest this, it is

Subject: Re: Rockin' till age 40

        Hey

God, I hope Soundgarden rock until _I_ am 40!! I think that SG will keep
putting out music that astounds us all for years to come for one really good
reason: They are NOT trying really hard to sound like Soundgarden every
time they do a new album. Aerosmith is a really unfortunate example of
musicians falling into this trap.

A lot of old fans complained when DOTU came out because it was so different.
Many of us said that we preferred a style akin to Badmotorfinger. This
really got me thinking, however. Consider how much you like BMF for exactly
what it is. If Soundgarden made DOTU into BMF number 2, then what good are
either of those albums? The way SG's music is progressing, every album has
it's own meanings, and most importantly, it's own memories. If they kept the
same style, they (and we) would be ignoring that they are just average
people that change, and not big glossy rock stars preserved by drugs and
formaldahyde, and we would get sick of them PDQ.

But this is NOT Soundgarden, and this is why _I_ like them so much, and why
_we_ happily read 50 messages about them every day. I hope that Soundgarden
goes on forever, and I don't predict them getting the label of dinosaur
rock, but I get the feeling their retirement falls under the catagory of
'whenever they are damn good and ready.'

I would be thrilled if anybody has anything to say about all this. Good
news is preferred, buy hey, it's all welcome!!

w/ them and touring is that it gets CC run down and he falls ill, which
means shows get cancelled or postponed. The one-album per year thing would
be nice IF iot could be done. That was once PJ's grand idea and it didn't
work. The recording process just doesn't quite work that way, not for rock
albums. I have a friend who's begun doing movie soundtracks and that
process seems a bit faster--he's done 2 plus an end credit song in less than
a year, but he may be an exception b/c he has his own pro-level 64 track

i cannot listen to 'superunknown' because of BHS. I can't stand it, i
will change the radio to listen to ANYBODY instead of hearing that song,
i can't stomach it. 'fell on black days' got to me when the album was
released because of overplay but now it's one of my favorites... but BHS i
cannot endure under any circumstances, i wish they'd toss it out of the
set and from chris' reaction at the shows i saw this year i bet he wishes
he could to. (of course, those who received the dedication in chicago
probably feel differently, and i can't blame them, but it'd driven me
NUTS!)

(if you think this is sacrilege, i never ever ever want to hear the song
'black' by pearl jam ever again either. at least live. on the album i
can kinda still deal with it.)

wow, i still love BHS a lot. it's not by any chance my most listened

and the version played during the 96 tour was just amazing and blows

but the one song i can't take listening to would have to be.......
hmmmm.... i don't really like Karaoke much at all, and Into The Void

like the way CC sang the Sealth letter. a good message with the song,

From: Mandy Crook <mandyc@phm.gov.au>
Subject: SG going off in Sydney

Well kiddies Im back at work and my computer after a full week of rock and
roll, or more specifically a week of Soundgarden, `when too much Soundgarden
is barely enough!!!'.

I had the Sydney Big Day Out last Monday, then a train trip up to Newcastle
for Wednesday night and back to Sydney for Thursday night. What can I say?
Chris took his shirt off! That just about did it for me, since the last
time they were here he didnt take his shirt off at all. Perhaps a bit more
detail is in order.

The Big Day Out went off! I had a great time, it was the only sunny day of
the whole week, the BDO Gods were doing their thing yet again. Soundgarden
were on about 9.00pm after a pretty full day and they rocked. The only
thing wrong was that the sound was shit! not loud enough and the mix wasnt
really up to scratch when you could hear it. Got pretty close, 35,000
people, damn hard to get near the front. although my sister managed it,
she's younger and taller than me though. I wasnt going to let the sound
destroy the whole experience though, I rocked out none the less. Now as far
as setlists go Ive got a shitty memory for that sort of thing so I wont
attempt it, someone else may have a better memory.

OK Newcastle, a pretty small venue so got pretty close and this time I
stood right under the speakers, because I was going to bloody well hear it
this time. Could see the whole stage right throughout the set. They were
pretty awsome, had a fantastic time, no surprises however, though I was
beside myself when they did Hands All Over, what a song! Poor Chris, the
only thing I remember him saying was something like `I dont know where the
hell I am, in the middle of nowhere...' I had to feel for him because I
didnt know where the hell I was either.

Now the one the went right off..... Sydney Hordern. My god this is what I
was hanging out for, this is what they had been like the last time they were
here. Highlights in no particular order.... Mailman, Rusty Cage was
amazing, Slaves and Bulldozers, and a fantastic cover song that I didnt
recognise, I really enjoyed hearing a song I didnt know.

Overall comments.....Chris took his shirt of all three times, Kim wore a
Corrosion of Conformity Teeshirt one night, cant remember the other nights.
at the BDO Kim played the end reverb stuff of JCP with his bottle of beer
(what a guy!), in Newcastle Kim was drinking Crown Lager according to my
sister who got right up the front, Ben seemed the happiest in Sydney where
he did reverb improvisation stuff with Kim at the end of JCP, oh oh and then
he threw his bass into the crowd, my god I just remembered that, I think the
big bouncers/security guys got it back though, could see them just
barrelling through the crowd at the end. I think thats enough for now,
three times in one week! as far as Im concerned, that not enough.

Cheers
Mandy

Vincent wrote:

>was not just "another" band and that they were something special?

I think Black Hole Sun (i was really into Bryan Adams before...don't flame
me!), may look
i'm exaggerating but it really changed my life (thing that DOTU did not...). I
spent literaly
hours listening to it, i was getting mad...the first times i just skipped the
other songs, i just
wanted BHS! But then it happened me to listen to the whole album...and
lightning crashed...
i started to like TDITTL like mad, then Limo Wreck, then all the other
songs...after two
weeks i had ALL sg albums, and i liked them...
This brought to my mind a thought...well, we ALL know BHS is the most
"commercial"
(and notice the inverted comas...) sg song.I don't mean Chris and co. did it to
sell many
records or go worldwide..they just felt like doing such a song, and it turned
out to be a great
success.Everybody likes it (even my brother, who's into Italian COMMERCIAL
music a
lot...) and millions of people in the world know sg thanks to it (and maybe
spoonman)...
If Chris hadn't create it, i would not have spent this last two years looking
for sg stuff, i
would not have spent days listening to them, and wondering how could it be
possible to do
such a perfect music, how could it be possible that i liked EVERY song so
much...
So i was wondering that maybe there are lots of groups that i would like as
much as sg (i
doubt...) if i only had the occasion to listen to...and, at least here in
Italy, you get this
occasion when a group makes a commercial song...i mean ... i can't go buy tons
of cds
without knowing there are good songs in, i'm not that rich for God's sake! Here
the radio is
non-existant (they air only shitty italian music and maybe the Fugees...), the
only means to
hear a good song is on tv...and they JUST DON'T air music that's not widely
liked...
So the *big* question...is it right for a group to do a commercial song (even
if it was not
created ON PURPOSE to be sold in millions copies) to enlarge their audience? You
could
lose the respect of some thousands old-date fans, but how many millions will
you catch up?
(and i don't mean people who buys the cd to listen JUST to that song, but
people who,
listening to that song, and then to all the album, and then to all the albums,
become your
fans[just like me]).Let's take sg as an example...BMF sold 3-4 millions copies
(excuse me if
it's not right, but that's not important for the concept), SUPERUNKNOWN sold
twice that
number of copies, DOTU (until now) sold less than superunknown.Given that in
DOTU
there's not such a catchy song as BHS (i mean for a large audience, not for
fans:-), the
difference between superunknown buyers and DOTU buyers gives you about the
number of
the people who just bought superunknown for BHS or Spoonman, NOT turning into
fans...right?.So, how can you explain that DOTU will sell more than BMF? The
only logical
explanation is that MANY people, buying superunknown for that two catchy songs,
turned
out to be new fans, REAL fans...Now, was it right that they have done BHS? And
don't come
tell me that they hadn't realize how good BHS was...in a recent interview on an
italian music
magazine(one of the few) Chris pointed out that they had cut a song from DOTU
because it
was too catchy...[if you like i'll translate that particular question&answer
for you] Being in
the music industry for years, makes you understand rapidly the songs that will
kick ass!
Just want to hear your opinion about it. [oh, excuse me for being too long].

Valerio

well my answer to this thread is a bit different...there is not a song that
i have to stop listening to cuz i hate it - not even BHS, and caryn you are
right that the chicago meaning behind that song makes it so much more
bearable now ;-) And also I just loved the solo version on the tour because
it was one of the few times to really really hear chris sing during the show...

BUT there is a song that i currently *cannot* listen to and that is Blow Up
the Outside World. I am not exactly sure why, but it brings up so many
memories of Chicago and meeting the band and the Sommsters and just all the
emotion of that..I guess I instantly think of the performance of that song
on stage which was so incredibly powerful, and I just want to pack my bags
and spend my life following SG around on the road! Ever since I got the
single, I have just listened to to the Dusty remix and that is it...

i don't know if jamie does, but i ADORE this version of 'into the void',
i'd kinda sorta agree about the vocals but the GUITAR just makes up for
it... ahhh... to me it is the ULTIMATE i-am-pissed-so-i-am-going-to-

i love 'karaoke' the same way i love 'mankind' from the last pearl jam
album (it's the same song, same topic, just different bands ;-> ), though
mankind gets away with it because it's cheesier. sg should have gone for
full cheese AND let matt or ben sing it. ;-)

I'd have to choose A for the same reasons you did... I mean.. then I'd
get to listen to a lot more of their songs more often instead of seeing
them once a year.. it'd be interesting to see how their music changed
too over time

well,...this might sound lame, but i just can't bring myself to change the
station when any song from SG comes on,..i know how bad most of the songs
are overplayed, but i just love listening to that mans voice, i cant get
enough!

say much but when he does i can't really make it out...this is not really
important, just something i need to know so my twisted mind can rest.

It's nice to know that the guys of Soundgarden are still getting along
very well after about 10 years of being together. That's what CC said
in a recent magazine. To me, Soundgarden is the best band there is and
it would totally suck if they broke up.

okay, I hate to admit it, but it's BHS. I used to absolutely love that
song! I still like Chris' vocals in that song though, but the song became
ruined for me when radio and tv played it over and over. I guess it's a
kind of song that everyone can listen to, so it becomes popular and
overplayed. that really sucks.

another song would be BIMH--such a great song, but ruined as in the reasons
stated above.

I don't necessarily skip over the songs tho. Guess I'm too lazy to choose
'skip' on the CD. In some cases, I shuffle!

ok.. not that I like to say that I dont' like a Soundgarden song.. but I
absolutely can't stand Kickstand... I've never liked the song...it
sounds much too mainstream for me.. plus it doesn't seem like the kind
of style that Soundgarden sounds right with (don't flame me for this)

Rock 103.5 here in Chicago had the Soundgarden contest today. I heard the
person win it while I was in my car(around 7:30p) with no cel phone. Does me
a lot of good sitting home in the charger!!!! Anyway the prize he won was a
trip to anywhere in the US to a Soundgarden concert on their 97 US tour. I
heard it with my own ears and I may be old BUTT I am not senile or deaf!!
SOUNDGARDEN 97US TOUR!!!! Everyone keep their eyes and ears open!
On the songs you fast forward or skip thread. I have to admit I was sick
of BHS. I am not sick of it now because that is one of the songs I was on
stage at the Aragon and also the dedication so it will always be special.
BUTT I have a compilation of songs from a radio show in my car and I always
skip..... Come Together it has the whiniest guitar parts that would make my
dog, Peggy howl. Sorry Kim! but it's the truth! toni

no problem... it is on seth's homepage... the single is called alive in
the superunknown...here's the address...

http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/images/alive.jpg

the only thing is that it has this little "CD NOW" thingy in the corner
so you'll have to edit that out in paintbrush .. otherwise it looks
kinda bad with it in..and if you want to know how to get the jpg into
paintbrush.. just go to edit and say "copy".. then go to paintbrush and
go to edit and say "paste".. then you can edit the image and save it as
a bitmap so it'll be able to be a wallpaper... if anyone knows an easier
way to do this PLEASE tell me.. it is kinda time consuming and
frustrating.. oh yeah.. one more thing.. so that you don't get the whole
background of the screen in the paintbrush on your wallpaper.. just drag
your cursor so you select what you want to show up as your wallpaper..
then say "copy to" and you can save only that portion so you don't end
up with a wallpaper with a weird border around it.. ok? go ahead and
e-mail me if you have any more problems..hope I said all that right...

Subject: SOUNDGARDEN FANS RULE!!!

To everyone that's been so nice as to welcome me immediately and put up with
my newbie crap, a big THANKS!

As for SG stuff, I recently just bought SL/F, Alive in the SU, Songs from SU,
and Flower b/c finding these cd's are a great feat for my record stores up
here. I thought that they, especially "Toy Box", and a whole crap load of
songs on SL/F were awesome! I know everyone tells me to get SG bootlegs in
used CD stores, but we have one in my town, and for at least a year now
they've known me as the SG maniac. They have my home phone # to call me
whenever a new SG cd, etc. comes in. Last time I was in there, I bought
Ultramega Unknown. It was $27 something with tax, and I only had $25 and
change. She knew how bad I wanted it, so she fixed the register so it would
come out so I could afford it. God bless that woman!!! Next time I'm in
Syracuse, I'm going to check out their used cd stores to see what I can
scrounge up.

Two more newbie questions:

1. Is it worth it to join the fan club?
2. Where can I buy Louder than Live, etc.? (I have Motorvision)

Thanks everyone!!

love, lissa =)

I have to agree with some sommsters, and say BHS. I didn't mind the song,
when I first heard it on SU. But radio stations here have played it
continuously since 1994 (and they haven't stopped). I don't listen to radio
stations that much anyway, so I shouldn't care, but this also happens to be
the most covered SG song. The worst was, when I had a summer job, working at
a hotel; they somehow managed to change BHS into elevator music, a weird
instrumental version they played every half hour (along with FNM's 'Midnight
Cowboy' and Tschaikovsky). So by the end of the week, I couldn't stand that
song anymore. But I think it's getting better now..... at least I can listen
to BHS without thinking of 'Swan Lake'...

umm..... Exit Stonehenge? I always thought SG might be poking a little fun
at certain death/thrash metal groups with that one. And the 1989 version of
'Heretic' makes me crack up.... but I think that's just me :)
