i live in seattle and it took about that long to get mine -- bonnie too,

I have to agree with whoever said it, sorry I can't remember off-hand....
Loud Love is definitely the sexiest SG song for me.
Louder Than Love was the first SG album I heard, and still is my favorite.
Not only is LL one of my fav songs, but it is so heavy and Chris's voice is
just so sexy...., they were way ahead of their time.

Subject: re: Melbourne Concert

I'd first like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Soundgarden in concert
down here in Melbourne (they can really fire a crowd up), but after
reading Carolyn's great review i thought i might raise a couple points:

Does Kim ever look anything more than bored out his brain?
I swear to god i saw him heave a huge sigh at one stage during the concert
(surely he can't want us to think it *that* easy for him to play stuff
like the Rhinosaur solo). Even ben looked a bit bored, but i get the
impression he's always like that. (aside : do you think he could strap
that bass any lower? :)

Actually the whole mechanical thing struck me a little hard, as the band
seemed unwilling to stray from those things they have layed down on
records. Apart from Chris who did some quiet vocal impro. over some
of the heavier parts of a couple of songs, Ben was the only one to throw
in a few notes here and there ot let us know he was still thinking about
how the songs fit together. Kim's leads seemed woefully familiar and
rehearsed. The low being the lead fills before the quiet break in Slaves
& Bulldozers. I don't know if Kim was unused to the part going on so long
('cos Chris went off the side to have a smoke), or he just couldn't come
up with anything new for about 30 bars.

On a different note, I really like the way that Ben's bass is pushed to
the very front in the concerts. The intro to "Rhinosaur" is the perfect
example, where its just huge thundering bass and kim's sparse lead driving
the song (Chris didn't have a guitar). No rhythm guitar is needed or
wanted. Slaves & Bulldozers is another fine example.
(i wish they'd played 'Head Down')

Hi list! :)
Well...you people have been talking about the sexiest sg-song. I personally
think "Jesus Christ Pose" is one of the sexiest (or let's call the one which is
touching me most =) songs around. Has anyone of you ever tried to listen this
song in the morning when it's dark and you're lying in your bed? Incredible!!
It doesn't stop to send shivers down your spine...wow.
It's not the lyrics (which aren't related to love...or are they) and not cc's
voice (actually i don't like it that much when he's singing this high ;) it's
just the song itself...
And I agree Greg..."boot camp" is a very emotional love song. Very touching
too. It's so nice and has a very convinient and relaxing atmosphere. Another
nice, emotional song is "call me a dog" - a touchy song about an dissapointed
love (i guess at least). I love this one.
Ohya..the scariest songs: "4th of july" (breathing life like fire...) and "limo
wreck" (when the whole thing blows up...i won't pretend...)
Ok..don't mind this boring-written letter and this bad grammar. I'm tired. =:c)

take care!!

        Hey

I don't expect that many people to take interest, but I have returned from
the hell that is broken E-Mail and a *fucked* server. Really glad to be
back. From the looks of the last few digests I browsed, you all seem to be
well.

My SG related content is actually pretty exciting for me. Last week I got
spunky and went to the nearest big city to hunt for SG Discs. I didn't find
anything old, but I found BIMH#2 and BOTH BUTOW singles all in the same day.
All three were the UK's, so I was quite elated, and still am.

I am interested to know what anyone thinks of the Dusty remix. I think it
is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard, especially that vocal
thing in the beginning and the heavy use of Ben's bass part.

(If this topic was dicussed into the ground while I was gone, please feel
free to drop me a personal note.) :)

P.S. I know that this is going to be gloating, but I _really_ must mention
that I will be attending the Metallica show Wed. in Minneapolis. Write me
Thursday if you want a review. <VERY EXCITED> sw

Cool...It blows me away that there's a SOMMSter at the same school, let
alone the city. As for the bootlegs, I couldn't help you much

Have you tried Sonic Temple? It's a new/used/import/you-name-it CD

It's also one of my favourite songs, and you're right, the sax does
kinda kill it. It seems more suited in Drawing Flies, but the whole
feeling of RTYW in the first half of the song doesn't seem to match with
the ending...it starts off with a hard edge, but then just kinda dies
and fades out with the sax. But I wouldn't be able to tell you if the
single is w/o the sax. Actually, when I think about it, Kim should get
into songwriting more...I really liked Never the Machine Forever
(another kick-ass tune) Speaking of song endings, Rusty Cage is also
one of my favourites, but my girlfriend (not really a SG fan) heard it
for the first time and thought it was way cool, but her only gripe was
that when the song slows down, he repeats the chorus way too many times
(it's really bad when you notice something like that so much). If the
ending were a bit shorter/altered, it would be perfect. As for Cash's
cover of the song, I heard it for the first time around the end of
October...I started laughing, but I knew it was him doing the cover, and
not the other way around (just gotta wait for the radio DJ to say it).
It was cool though, cos no matter who sings it (well, it does matter),
or how it is sung, the music, the words, and the whole attitude behind
the song carries the same meaning. I caught the Cornell interview on
New Music this month and saw his reaction to the cover...what's next,
Barenaked Ladies covering JCP (Johnny Cash Pose)?

Be nice guys, don't flame me for that one...even I know that was really
cheesy. I'm just bored and don't feel like doing algebra homework right
now. Maybe it's time for a little Ty Cobb...

I'm a little behind but I have to add that I think Kyle Petty (Son of

after the revving motors when he says "Oh god" -well enough said.

Also, as far as which member I relate to personality wise, although I
would have to say Chris is most fascinating to me for so many reasons,
I probably am most like Kim from all the interviews I have read.
Besides the fact that I was also a philosophy major, I tend to have
strong opinions on many of the same things I have read Kim

Subject: Blow Up The Outside World video

Hey. . . in response to Katie's questions about the BUTOW
video. . . well, it's one of my favorites so I've thought about it's
meaning alot too. Here's my thoughts on the matter: I read that
the director got the idea from the movie "A Clockwork Orange,"
which I've seen, and there's I think only one little scene in the
whole movie (which I didn't think was as wonderful as the critics
say) that's similar to the video -- this degenerate kid is strapped
to a chair, being brainwashed to eradicate his violent tendencies.
So that's where the original idea came from, but my interpretation
is pretty much what Katie said -- Chris Cornell, or the character
he's playing, is the subject of this evil procedure to get him to conform=
. I originally thought it was inspired by the movie
1984 -- a GREAT film -- see it if you haven't. =3D) You could
take it literally, or it could be meant to be an allegory reflecting
the way that in today's society the media seems to have
or try to have more and more control over the public. . .
but then there are those of us who will never let them
control us. =3D) Just my thoughts.

In resonse to Carolyn's review O.K guys!
- -------------------------------------------

Hey great review!! I have to keep that post, maybe I should make a few
copies of it as well.

Anyway, just thought I'd add some more stuff.

I didn't really think about you guys wearing jeans - man you must have been
cooking, I was steaming as it was. Festival Hall was like the depths of hell
during the support acts, but when Soundgarden came on I forgot how hot I
was! I didn't realise that people were passing out from the heat though, we
couldn't see that.

That's funny that you guys are into the tennis considering what Chris said ;)
I think my only disappointment was not being down at ground level because
I'm not sure if it was as loud where we were, but at least we could just
relax and enjoy the show, especially as we were pretty tired from the BDO
the day before. I think I'll go and see Tool and try to get gen. admission.
Tool will be really cool live, and yeah Kim definitely didn't have the Tool
shirt.

A couple of extra things :
 - The crowd going wild when Chris took off his shirt!
 - Kim playing the guitar behind his head which was cool!
 - Chris saying that mailman was not about killing your girlfriend
 - Chris saying 'hey what are you guys doing up there in the rafters!
 - Before Ty Cobb Chris just yelling out 'FUCK YOU ALL!!!'
 - Matt's cool drum solo before JCP when all the lights went onto him and
then he went into the JCP drums (man he's awesome)
 - Matt was wearing those funny sandals I've seen him wearing in a magazine
 - At times these evil looking red lights would focus on Chris and he looked
like the devil!
 - At the end of JCP when they were going wild with all the feedback, Chris
just turned his back on the crowd, moved into the foetal position and sat on
his guitar : basically playing the guitar with his arse!
 - The end of Rhinosaur was cool with the main riff moving up an octave
every two seconds!
 - Chris saying something like "Sorry there was no encore last night, we'll
give you one tonight" and the crowd goes crazy!!
 - Some of the crowd was weird, I was wondering what they were doing at the
concert, they were just sitting in their seats like zombies, not even moving
at all. I think my back and shoulders were sore after the show just from
nodding my head all night!!!!
 - Bootcamp was incredible : just thought I'd add that!
 - Mailman just rocked! One of my favourite SG songs of all time that just
sounded so heavy! Chris' singing was totally memorable during Mailman,
absoloutely seething of whoever he may have written these lyrics for.
 - MMM, what else to say! Just wish they had of played longer! Hearing that
they played Hands All Over in the Gold Coast it would have been great to
hear that.

Well that's about it. I had a great time. That kind of music has to be good
for your spirit, I've just been so high after Saturday and Sunday and still
am. It may be a few years until they come back to Melbourne - well if they
come back I'll definitely be back as well!

Subject: soundgarden (live in queensland) vol. one...

sorry about the lateness of this, but events beyond my control
(the flu and a public holiday) have kept me from the computer. the second
instalment of my report will follow, and therein lies some big news (at
least for me). anyway, here it is:

the big day out; southport, queensland; january 19, 1997.

the day began at seven in the morning, with a little breakfast and
a plan to pick up littlejoe at the train station (he lives across the
other side of town). I'm not sure that I actually ended up eating
anything; I was beginning to feel excited about the show and I don't
normally eat when I'm wound up. the plan was for roberta (my girlfriend)
to drop joe and I off at the show and then for her to pick us up at around
10:30 pm.

after picking up joe, we began the half-hour trip down to the
southport parklands (the site of the bdo in queensland since 1994).
unfortunately, the drive took a little longer than that, considering that
close to 35000 people would wind up at the show by nightfall and that the
bruce highway is the only way to get down to the coast from brisbane. we
managed to hit the coast sometime before 10:00, so we walked around some
of the larger shops in the downtown area, waiting for the 11:00 am opening
of the gates and the beginning of the festivities...

...and soon enough, we were there. both joe and I were
festival-virgins at that point, so there was a certain amount of
anticipation and trepidation. there was to be over thirty bands on show
throughout the day, and we didn't know quite what to expect from the
festival as a whole. in the end, the whole thing was a tad disappointing.
I came away feeling as though I had heard the bands there, but not really
experienced them. on the whole, it only reinforced my belief that (for
the most part) outdoor shows aren't as good as club shows, and that music
festivals can be pretty lame. the double clam shells acting as stage one
and two were impressive, however :)

bands of note - the superjesus, a band from somewhere near carolyn
and who kick a lot of booty. three months ago they weren't signed; today
they play the second stage of the bdo. their music was great, much like
the smashing pumpkins. powderfinger, another australian band who rock and
who may be touring america sometime soon. they weren't as good live as
they are on their record _double allergic_, but I will see them again.
you am I seemed to be having a lot of trouble with people throwing shit at
them (patti smith later got hit in the head with a small surfboard, and
was *not* pleased), and it kinda threw them out. lead man tim rogers was
putting more effort in telling the crowd to fuck off than into the music.
I felt sorry for them. crowds can suck sometimes.

bands that sucked as much as the crowd - I didn't like the prodigy
before I went to the show, and I still don't like them. too many
keyboards and dance-moves to be sincere. the offspring's act of getting
some woo-girl to lick honey off another yobbo in the crowd's chest was
stomach-turning. leave the condiments and butt-rock at home next time,
fellas. I was marginally interested in seeing how supergrass shaped up in
a live setting, but they were only average at best. at least they were
better than the prodigy.

anyway, stage one and two were set up next to each other (while
one band performed the other would be arranging their gear), which made
our next decision easy. would we go and watch the offspring or would find
a good vantage point for soundgarden, who would go on an hour later? we
chose the latter. the prodigy's crew had left the stage, and were making
way for soundgarden's crew to set up. joe and I got up close to the stage,
noting the guitars and drums as they were brought out. I saw a guy behind
matt's kit tuning it up, and called out "gregg! gregg!" in the vein hope
it was gregg keplinger. I learnt later that it wasn't, but I did take a
photo of him sound-checking matt's kit :)

by the time offspring began, joe and I had moved back about twenty
metres. the pit had been violent for most of the day, so I wasn't keen to
bump heads with all the uglies present. what impressed me most was that
soundgarden's stage crew and technicians can keep doing their job while
another band (offspring) is blazing away on what boils down to the same
stage. kudos to them for their effort and professionalism.

8:50 had finally come; ten mintues before soundgarden were
scheduled to hit the stage. all the honey had run out, and the offspring
were gracious enough to know when their time was up. no, I'm unfair.
their lead singer *did* say that they wouldn't play another song so
soundgarden could come out on time, and actually encouraged us to see
them (not like the lead croaker of a nameless-band who pointed to the
storm clouds above our heads and joked "I think soundgarden ordered
those"). then came the push of some 15000 people over to stand in front
of stage one. joe and I held our spots well; we even managed to move
closer than we had intended. people seem to get very pushy in that
situation, so I was happy when we didn't have any major altercations.

9:00 ticked over, and soundgarden came out to a blaze of cheers
and applause. chris came out in what I thought was a triumphant pose, his
arms raised high above his head. kim, matt and ben seemed content just to
move to their positions. there was the obligatory greeting from chris and
the usual woo-girl screams in answer. all in all, although I've only seen
soundgarden three times, the show seemed all too mediocre. the atmosphere
just wasn't quite right and there didn't appear to be anything that was
greatly spontaneous or energetic. I was pretty disappointed.

which left me able to write the setlist on my arm for most of the
show and to take pictures when the lightshow was just right (the photos
should be developed soon). I'll recount the setlist I took down from the
*real* setlist a friend wound up with (songs not played are in []):
spoonman, searching, let me drown, pretty noose, [burden], my wave, fell
on black days, ty cobb, bhs, [outshined], search and destroy, rusty cage,
[boot camp with film], butow, [room a 1000 years wide], [hands all over],
slaves and bulldozers. the original setlist also had dusty and jesus
christ pose as encores, but we only got jcp. as you can probably see, we
missed out on a lot of stuff. whether that was because of time restraints
or because the band wasn't into the show is hard to tell, although I would
say a bit of both.

positives? well, the music was all pretty disciplined. there
weren't too many stray notes or missed beats. chris' voice was
surprisingly strong; there were few points where his throat cut out. his
voice was particularly strong throughout black hole sun and rusty cage.
the jam tacked onto the end of my wave was great, but ended all too
quickly. I don't know if this is a positive, but during my wave ben
toppled one of his speaker stacks and then had further problems with it
during fobd, leaving chris, matt and kim to play by themselves for most of
the song. kim and chris played some way cool fills during rusty cage, and
matt was awesome during search and destroy. chris must have been feeling
into towards the end of the show; at the end of butow he ran to the back
of the stage and then hurled a green frisbee out into the crowd.

the show probably rates somewhere in the middle. maybe it was me,
but the show was missing some integral element which has made other shows
more enjoyable. perhaps if I had moved closer it would have been better,
but the music didn't pull me to the stage, so I don't know if that was it.
a good show, but not their best.

by the end of the week, volume two of _soundgarden live in
queensland_ should be in your inboxes. it will recount the show of
january 22, the night I met soundgarden and had a whale of a time :)

btw, did any aussie lister tape kim on "the 3 hours of power"?

	if so, tell us all about it.  I heard he did his "festering 5";
his top song being something by thin lizzy.

	any takers?
