Hey.. you guys may have already gone over this, I don't know cause I just
joined the list.. but does anyone have any ideas what the "Blow Up the
Outside World" video is supposed to mean? if it's supposed to mean
anything at all anyway...=) I kinda thought it was something like (ok..
sorry for sounding real analytical and stuff.. school's been getting to
me.. but..) .. I thought it meant something like Chris Cornell won't let
society try and affect him or conform him.. and he won't be a statistical
human to analyze .. instead all he wants to do is play his music and
ignore everything else.. ? maybe? anyone have any other ideas?

>Carolyn review on SG concert.......

Great review My Friend.. Made me go back in my mind to Chicago's second
night. If you can read this review and feel each word, living the joy, the
excitement - then you know you are a Soundgarden fan. For you that haven't
had the joy of seeing them live "YET" just know that when you do this is
how you will feel.

>It was good to meet these people, to put faces to names.

Isn't it great to see SG with list members. I can't tell you how much it
added to the shows I saw because I was with SOMMs people. It is a special
kinship...

>My heart stops for a moment as I realise we are now walking behind my
footy hero, Brad Pearce.

Ahhhh you saw Brad Pearce I'm so jealous. Yes I'm a Ozlander football fan,
searching out any and all games on ESPN. Brad is too cute for words..

>9.30 pm and the lights go down. The crowd starts to buzz. Red lights
emphasise the stage. Then they turn blue. Eerie, eerie music is played -
like at the start of a thriller movie. Through the dark blue lights we can
see four figures emerge - from my side of the stage. Oh boy. THEY'RE
HERE!!

Makes your heart stop doesn't it!!!!

>The peaceful vein continues with BLOW UP THE OUTSIDE WORLD. Ben walks
around looking like he thinks this song goes for way too long?? He wanders
to the back corner to talk to a roadie, playing his bass all the while??

Ben did the same thing for the show where I was on stage during BUTOW. He
kept walking over to the back, but then in my sick little mind, figured
he was just coming over to see and wave at me. Okay so I have a strange
imagination - but he did wave at me and he was so damn fine.. :-)

>All of a sudden, as the guitar is still fading out, I notice my footy
hero, Brad Pearce, standing near me! I take a deep breath, and go up to
ask him and Matthew Allen for their autographs.

DAMNNNNNNN now I am jealous, you got his autograph and talk to him.

>The five of us walk back to our car, about 11.30 pm by this stage. Blair
takes a photo of me with the guys.

Please a copy for the membership page.

Great review Carolyn, as I said took me back to Nov. Waiting for more on
the your BDO. Okay where are the rest of you Ozlanders reviews - lets hear
them!!!!

I agree that we should produce a compilation tape, but we will need to
split up tasks. I have a number of audio packages that I could use to
reduce noise, and make the recordings sound better. I would be happy to
help produce the master. i.e. after all song contributions have been
transferred into digital format and placed at a specific location, I
would download each sample, run it through a noise gate and limiter and
transfer it to tape.
These are the steps I see that need to be done (following the actual
steps to produce any recording):
1) The Recording - Individuals make recordings.
2) Digitization - Digitize these recordings.
3) Compilation - Transfer the digitized samples to Seth to archive at a
specific location, decide on the ordering of the songs on the master.
4) Production and Mastering -Once all samples have been collected, the
songs can be downloaded, cleaned up and put onto a master tape in their
designated order.
5) Design of Cover Art and Insert information.
6) Replication and Distribution - making copies of master tape and
distributing to people.

If we could split up these tasks, it would be beneficial for everyone.
I believe RoseeMist offered to do the tape cover art, so there's an
opportunity for SOMMSTER visual artists to contribute. So what really
needs to be done first is for people to make their recordings, get them
digitized and get the samples to Seth. Also musical collaboration on
songs is also encouraged! Let me know if there are any ideas and we can
try to get this operation organized. ;)

Well, I finally found a copy at a store here in good ol Victoria.

Unfortunately it is rather expensive ($33 CDN).

I want to know peoples opinion. Is it really that good? Would it
be worth it to me to shell out $33 plus tax? SHould I continue
to hold out in hopes of finding a cheaper copy? I still
remember reading the joyous reviews of list members as they played

   Thanks to all who supplied me with info about getting the movies.

   I agree with Lance. "All Night Thing" is a truely sexy song. Temple of the
Dog was pure Chris talent, style, and soul.

   ("If its an all night thing, nobody's gonna make it end. And if it dont
begin, dont worry that I'll take offense. If its an all night thing and we
fall like a tear falling to the ground, I'll never come around, you'll never
hear a word from me"). Just makes ya wanna melt (or cry)?.

  My topic today: SG music is full of hooks. Chris has said this. Im not
totally sure what this means, but I think it does have to do with the way he
says words like "elevator" that was never an even remotely interesting word
(to me) until he sang it. And this is what "hooks" people. It is done
intentionally, but it is also a style I think that is very enjoyable. I got
a big hook right in the mouth and they just reeled me in..:)>. Im theirs now
from here on out.

   Im sorry to read about some of you fighting. Im only 3 months or so on
this list. I was so, so overjoyed to have found it! I have talked to others
privately, new people, not new people. I have made cool friends, and said my
share of stupid things and have been put in my place. But I cant imagine
people who love hard rock like Soundgarden can be so overly sensitive. You
could be black, white, old, young, gay, or straight and why the hell should I
care? But if you love Soundgarden and know they are something special like I
do, then we have something in common. If you are a nazi-psycopathic-mass
murderer, then I hope your writing from prison. (haha)

Trying to stay light!!

Subject: Sex Sells...
From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

All these SG threads.. Where do I begin?? Scariest song? I dunno, I've
never really thought of any SG songs as 'scary'... I suppose 'Beyond the
Wheel' is the obvious choice, for reasons defined by everyone else who has
written in about it... I guess I'm a bit too late to contribute anything on
this subject! I've always thought of JCP as a fairly demented which I suppose
is fairly scary... I always thought that listening to JCP is akin to being in
the clutches of a raging fever, swirls of noise, feedback and a racing tempo,
a huge explosion of energy... shit, I love that song... :)

Creepiest song is *DEFINATELY* Toy Box... no reason needed... it just is...
I just get that feeling when I listen to it...

Sexiest song? Well, I'd have to say that my choice is one no-one seems to
have touched on - 'Loud Love'... It's always been my favourite SG song, first
song I heard and one that's *ALWAYS* touched me... I love that song every
time I hear it, every fucking time... The way it intro's, the vocals bleeding
into the feedback, the throbbing music, powerful vocals - shit, it's hard to
describe, I just know it does things for me... ;)
But even better than that, it has to be TOTD's All Night Thing... Lance
summed it up prefectly when he qualified it against music, lyrics, theme,
ambience... the song has the *LOT*... Gimme a meal for two, some candles and
red wine and that song... Oh yeah, and some georgeous female for company...
;)

I have to agree with Lance again, there has never been a sexier song and nor
will there ever be...

Subject: What's sex without emotion?

All this talk of sexy SG songs has led me to evolve the
topic in my mind, since i don't find any SG songs sexy. (Even
Big Dumb Sex, which, In my opinion, is a parody of 80's buttrock)
Someone mentioned fluttergirl, which is a very emotional song. I
think this is, in fact, the MOST emotional song written by
Chris. It is just Chris and his guitar, pouring his heart out,
revealing every single feeling. It's just so raw and pure,
it's unbelievable.

Another emotionally charged song would have to be Boot Camp.
The desperation is unbelievable. It typifies many of the feelings
I get about my life....that there must be something beyond this
shithole of a life, something better. I just can't get to it.
I guess if someone can really identify with the conent and
feeling of a song, it turns out to be very emotional, be it
anger or grief. It happens outside of SG too. I know "AEnema"
really nails how I feel about my school (I know it's a cliche-type
attitude, but it rings true. My peers are a bunch of fucking idiots).

Anyway, not everyone will feel the same about certain songs. I see
how everyone feels that Mailman is about a stalker, but I see it as
how someone's been beat emotionally by someone, and they've had
enough. He knows that he's going down, but the person who put him
in that downward spiral is going to pay for what they did to them.

That's just my two-cents. And if you want an emotional song that
can still leave you unattatched, listen to Overfloater on a rainy day
and stare out the window. "Feel the sadness"

Heh, heh... Maybe I've made it too complicated, but it's easier than it
sounded in my previous post. I guess it's just a matter of what type of
quality we are looking for here. Maybe it's just me, but I like good
quality projects and not cutting any corners... and I think we ought to
do it our own way rather than how another list does it... although some
tips would always be helpful. The fact is that we will all have to
decide on a process, so everyone's ideas are welcome. I have just had
some experience in creating my own demos, and those are the necessary
steps to create a decent quality recording, regardless...

Subject: Anything, everything and nothing

Sound check, SOMMSters !

Even though this is my first post, I've been surfing around Seth's SG
page for about six months (kudos, Seth - it's a cool site), and I've
been a fan for the past couple of years so I won't ask any "newbie"
questions. Although I'm a relatively new fan, and I don't have all
their albums, I have heard enough of their stuff to know what I like.
And not because of bandwagonism - most people I know personally don't
really like SG in particular - and not because they are the flavour of
the month (sorry Bush fans) or b/c of a catchy crossover hit (BHS is
still awesome anyways, whether or not it was overplayed). My point is
that REAL fans know for themselves that it's love of the music, though
not to say that you can't like them for other reasons.

I've subbed to the digest for about a week, so I think I'm starting to
get the feel of things here. I agree that this "tolerance" thread has
been beaten to death, but Taylor H. couldn't have put it better. If
people were face to face with each other we would be a lot more
hard-pressed to hide what we're really thinking. If you don't have
anything good to say, keep it to yourself. On the other hand, if you
really have a legitimate point to make (and now to tie this all in to
something SG-related)...CC sums it all up in No Attention: So say what
you want spit it out loud/Into my face/And I'll pay no attention...If
you got something on your mind, say it, but if you don't like what you
hear, don't dignify it with a response. With that said...

The common thread lately (that really does involve the band) is the
scariest/joyful/sexiest song. Yes, there are songs that fall into each
category, but often there are songs that can be classified in all three
in addition to several others, all at the same time. I find it very
difficult to group songs in that way...I can't name a favourite song
because I've listened to every single track on their last four albums,
and I like all of them, just that each has it's own qualities. It
depends on what kind of mood I'm in, I'll be listening to a particular
song over and over again for a week or two, and then move on to another.
The thing is, I won't get sick of that song, because I might start
listening to it all over again three or four months later, but with a
different outlook/interpretation. The great thing about their music is
that it appeals to every single emotion all at once. I tend to think
about things too much, sometimes "I don't feel like feeling", so I'll
just lie around for hours with their tunes cranked, and just stop
thinking altogether. Other times it gets me to think about things more
clearly. Yeah, we all wish we could BUTOW at one point in our lives,
but I guess when a song makes you think about something, it keeps you
from actually doing something psychopathic...kinda like a purging
effect. Again, it all depends on my state of mind at the moment, so
don't worry, I'm not crazy, just realistic.

I've noticed a lot of SOMMSters quote lyrics in their sig. files at the
end of their letters, but I like to do it with whatever song I've been
listening to lately, and change it every now and then. I can't get New
Damage out of my head...maybe I'm just depressed lately. (Another
"-iest" thread maybe?).

Sorry for such a long post...I've just been thinking too much
again...maybe I'll go home and listen to something I haven't heard in a
while...

  Wow, I must say, I just had the shittiest day. But to come home and read
all these wonderful SG-related posts, things are getting better! :) I come
across so much anti-Soundgarden crap in my city, I need some support! But
after listening to BMF for three hours straight last night (ahh Chris
Cornell, the voice you never tire of :)>) I there's no doubt in my mind
they're the best there ever was.
     It was so great reading the reviews of the concerts in Australia. It
made me feel excited all over again, it's amazing how a band can do that.
 But I must say that although the music was EXCELLANT, no band member went
without shirt. *sigh* oh well, I'd go even if I was blind!
      About those scariest/sexiest/happiest song things, I don't know if I
can choose, there's so many! But these are my choices. I think that a happy
song would definitely be Show Me on the No Alternative compilation. I
haven't seen anyone mention it, but it's just one of those songs that you can
put on repeat and listen to for hours. The beat just makes me feels jumpy
and excited. I love the intro, the guitar, the vocals, everything. It was
written by Ben Shepherd, if you haven't heard it, you should check it out.
    Okay Sexiest song. Well every song makes me feel pretty damn sexy, but
to choose one, that's the problem. There are three that I consider really
sexy. I love Power Trip. That song is just so moody and dark...it gives me
chills. It totally gives the illusion of power and it's this sexy groovin'
beat. All Night Thing is another sexy one, I must agree with everyone that
said that. The intro is my favorite part. The sexiest song on the newer
material (Superunknown and DOTU) would have to be Like Suicide, wholly on the
part of Chris' amazing set of vocal cords. The part where it gets loud and
deep, about three minutes into the song, whew...that gets me every time. The
acoustic version is also VERY sexy.
    None of SG's songs really scare me necessarily, but there are some that
are darker than others. 4th of July is pretty dark, but that's the beauty of
it. So is Beyond the Wheel.
     Sorry this post is so long people! I'll try to spare you next time!

Hey... I've been having a lot of trouble with my mail lately, and if
I've already posted the stuff I'm about to say I apologize. Things
have been deleted & it's been hard keeping track of what's been
sent & what hasn't.
First of all, I wanted to ask if anyone else has any more info about
where to find boots & imports (via the net or elsewhere). If you
do it'd be much appreciated.
More on the subject of scary/sexy/happy songs... someone said
they thought BUTOW was sexy, and I just wanted to say I agree,
in a way it is. I'd also consider it a joyful song in a way, though a
lot of people would disagree w/ me. A lot of people I know think
it's about killing everyone or something -- or killing yourself, but it's
not. To me it's a really empowering song, it's about not giving up.
Think about the lines "Nothing's closing my eyes/nothing can beat
me down for your pain or delight" and "Nothing can break me at
all." That's one reason why it's my all-time favorie song, by SG
or anybody.
Also, I know there's been a lot of talk about the age/how long
you've been listening issue, and I just wanted to get my ten cents
in. If you truly love SG and appreciate their music, as long as
you're not a trendy motherfucker or a groupie, it doesn't matter
if you're 9 or 90, if you've been listening to them for a week or
10 years. Okay, I've said my piece. =)

Subject: Dark, brooding and on a high!!!!
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

I have been reading all the post on the scariest, sexiest, and emotional
songs from our beloved SG. Most every post states in one way or other that
SG music is mostly dark and brooding. Which I agree with completely. But
tell me why is it when you see them in concert your mood is far from dark
and brooding. Just read Carolyn's review again, now does she sound like
she is depress or in a black mood - I don't think so!!. How about Lee's or
Greg's posts, think back to the reviews over the summer from Lolla (okay
bad example) but the reviews from the SG tour. No one once said they left
the hall feeling down or in a bad mood.

Lord when we walked out of the Chicago/Fairfax shows you could have peeled
each of us off the ceiling. We were on a wonderful high. Feeling good,
laughing, and having one great time. Do you see what I'm getting at. If
SG is all dark and moody why the great high when we hear them live. Don't
get me wrong I agree that their music is mostly dark and I love them for
it. But yet they give us such an emotional high when we are in their
presents.

But for me the!!!!
Scariest song: "Fell on Black Days" - it can make me cry for reasons and
memories that I wish I could forget.

Sexiest song: "Loud Love" - when Chris sing/speaks the word "Damn" it
gives me goose bumps.

"Overfloater" - like good sex it builds until you are overfloating from
release and like truly great sex starts over again.

By the way - I notice Lee's setlist of the Brisbane concert is different =

We got "Mailman", at least. They are the only differences I think there =

the concert on Wednesday). I look forward to those =

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following Soundgarden into the desert????
It's the evening of Friday, 24 January 1997.  Tomorrow morning Blair (my =
husband) and I will be embarking on our journey interstate to see =
Soundgarden strut their stuff in Melbourne on Sunday.  I am full of =
excitement as late Friday I get email messages from some fellow =
Sommsters who will be going to the same concert.  It is well after =
midnight before I switch off the computer, feeling ever so tired after a =
big working week and yet all pumped up at the same time????..
Now early Saturday morning and the final emails are flying back and =
forth between list members Hando, Greg Dunbar, Tendrils and me.  We =
describe ourselves and what we'll be wearing, and arrange to meet =
outside Myers in the Bourke Street Mall at 5 pm.  Blair and I leave for =
our six-hour drive in the hot sun (thank God for airconditioning) to =
Blair's brother's place at Avoca, where we'll be spending the night.=20
Sunday is another hot day, the day of the Australian Open Grand Slam =
tennis final.  Sampras vs. Moya.  We have to leave for Melbourne (still =
more than two hours away) just as they start playing.  We're both =
wearing jeans and despite the airconditioning, we feel warm and wish =
we'd worn shorts.  The tennis is a walkover, we hear on the radio.  I'm =
glad, for Blair was mad we had to miss it.  Now he can focus on relaxing =
and enjoying the band that I want so desperately for him to love as much =
as I do.
We get to Festival Hall earlier than we thought, around 4.15 pm.  We =
park our car near there, and make the walk into the city to meet the =
others.  We've never been to Melbourne in the summer - always in winter =
to see the footy.  I comment how weird it seems, for us not to be =
walking to see my heroes on the footy field - instead we're going to see =
my heroes of a different kind, from a different country.  It's very =
humid, about 35oC (96oF), and we're already sweating before we've walked =
half-way there.
But I'm getting excited.
Hando is the first one to see us.  As promised, he's wearing black jeans =
and long-sleeved black Superunknown shirt.  Blair's in his black Black =
Hole Sun shirt and SOMMS hat, me in my SOMMS shirt (go, Dena!).  Then =
over comes Greg in his black DOTU shirt, accompanied by his brother =
Brett in his black & white SG shirt (with picture of the band).  "Isn't =
it cool all five of us are wearing different shirts", we say as we see =
each other.  Then up walks Tendrils (Cameron) and friend Andrew.  It was =
good to meet these people, to put faces to names.  We have dinner =
together at the Pizza Hut, getting to know each other more, and then =
make the walk to the concert, around 7 pm. =20
Many, many other people have the same idea.  As we walk, we're like a =
snowball, our number growing larger and larger as we get closer to =
Festival Hall.  The amount of different Soundgarden t-shirts is =
mind-boggling.  Of the approximate 8,000 people I guess are at the =
concert, at least 6,000 of them would be wearing Soundgarden shirts of =
some kind.  Mine is the only SOMMS shirt!!  I wonder if people realise =
the similarity between Posting with my good eye closed and Searching?.?  =
And do they know the significance of the twisted fork??
I run ahead of Blair, Greg, Brett & Hando and take a photo of them as =
they walk towards me in a line.  They look like a team, walking in time. =
 When we get to our car I leave my camera there - since we're in seats =
that aren't general admission, I'm assuming I won't get near enough to =
the band to take photos, if in fact I'm lucky enough to smuggle my =
camera in.  From my car I grab the tiny notebook I bought on the way to =
Melbourne, and pen - to take notes for this review and so I remember the =
setlist order (I'm really pleased I did this - taking notes made me pay =
more attention to every little detail than I perhaps otherwise would =
have, and gives me fantastic memories to look back on).
My heart stops for a moment as I realise we are now walking behind my =
footy hero, Brad=A0Pearce.  He and three other AFL footballers are =
walking together towards Festival Hall.  I feel very proud of his good =
taste in music, and would love to tell him so but I'm too chicken.
7.15 pm and literally thousands of us are now waiting outside Festival =
Hall for the doors to open, some sitting down, most standing.  All of us =
hot and continually having to swat at the damn sticky flies that hang =
around.  VERY annoyed with myself for not wearing shorts or a skirt =
now???.
The show is supposed to start at 7.30 pm, by which time the doors aren't =
even open yet.  We're all beginning to get rather agitated????..but I'm =
anticipating the start of good things to come, and am occupied watching =
the footballers who've taken up a spot near us, wondering whether =
they'll be anywhere near us in the Hall.
7.40 pm and the doors finally open.  We all shuffle in, and I start to =
dread finding out how bad our seats are (keeping in mind I was told we =
have restricted viewing seats and are practically behind the stage with =
no view of the band at all).  I'm pleasantly surprised with where we're =
put.  Five rows from the front, about 30 feet from the right side of the =
stage.  Our seats are actually behind the front of the stage, but in =
front of the back of the stage.  (make sense?)  We're pretty well =
directly in line with where the guitarists stand.
The first act, already playing as we get in there, are excellent.  =
Little known Aussie band, The Living End.  They finish with their song =
that's been getting a lot of airplay on Triple=A0J lately.  They are =
very good - and the crowd seems to enjoy them, although it's obvious =
they are looking forward to You Am I or Soundgarden.
8.30 pm and You Am I are on, starting what I would normally consider to =
be a great set, but I'm feeling very hot and just want Soundgarden to =
begin!  Ten minutes later "Cathy's Clown" is superb - this is what I =
needed to rev me up and get ready for the main act - and I begin to bop =
around in my seat and take my first notes in my miniature notebook. =20
{from now on I will go from the notes I took, reliving the moment for =
you all}
It's as hot as hell in here - no ventilation whatsoever.  We're packed =
in like sardines - sweaty bodies.  My eyelids are prickling from the =
sweat and I can't remember being this hot before.  Jeans are rolled up =
to the knees, Somms shirt (thanks again, Dena!!) sleeves rolled up to =
the shoulders and bottom tied in a knot at my waist.  All this doesn't =
cool me down much.  Can't they just open some doors?
9.10 pm sees You Am I finishing a scorching 40 minute set.  They are a =
much better live act than on CD.  Tim Rogers is extremely fit, forever =
dancing around and winding his arm up on his guitar like a helicopter =
blade.  The lights go up again all over the hall.  There are an awful =
lot of people in here now.
I am feeling so excited now I could almost burst.  9.15 pm.  The next =
act will be THE ACT!  SOUNDGARDEN!!!!!!!  This is REALLY happening to =
me!!!!!!  I almost feel I should pinch myself to make sure I'm not =
dreaming.  J  Blair asks me what the first song will be.  "Spoonman", I =
tell him without a doubt.
9.30 pm and the lights go down.  The crowd starts to buzz.  Red lights =
emphasise the stage.  Then they turn blue.  Eerie, eerie music is played =
- - like at the start of a thriller movie.  Through the dark blue lights =
we can see four figures emerge - from my side of the stage. Oh boy.  =
THEY'RE HERE!!
Chris is at his microphone, centre stage.  He screams "HELL!"  Ben is on =
our side (stage right), Kim over the other side.  Matt is hidden from us =
behind sound-mixing gear. =20
SPOONMAN erupts like a frenzy.  My third favourite Soundgarden song of =
all time absolutely ROCKS!!  The drums are THUNDERING!  I almost =
collapse I am so thrilled with all of this, and my fingers are writing =
madly with minds of their own, while I'm not even looking down at my =
notebook.   The crowd is hysterical.  A mass of thriving flesh.  Crowd =
surfers all over the place.  How I wish I could be down there with them. =
 But at least from here I can see everything, I can see the crowd move =
as one, I can feel the music, and I can see the band clearly - we are =
about the same level as the floor of the stage, which is at least four =
feet above the crowd. =20
Ben seems very sedate.  Chris look so small!  I was imagining a big man, =
I don't know why.  "Come on?..come on" he sings.  He takes off his =
guitar for a moment.  A big white spotlight shines over the crowd and a =
sea of arms waves madly at the stage.  Ben turns away from it all, as =
cool as a cucumber. [I secretly decide I like Ben - he actually looks =
very shy, and he reminds me of my best friend's twin brother].  I can =
just see Matt's hair above the sound equipment wave wildly in orange =
glowing lights.  Steam seems to rise from the drumkit.
"Painted blue across my eyes???"  OhmyGod.  SEARCHING WITH MY GOOD EYE =
CLOSED!!!!  The song of our SOMMS shirt!!  Why, oh WHY can't I be down =
there and show the band the back of my shirt??  FUCK this is not fair!  =
Chris comes top stage right - seems very close to us - looks for a =
second as though he's thinking about diving into the crowd during the =
drum rolls???
LET ME DROWN is the third song.  Ben is moving more than Kim!  He's =
having FUN, ladies and gentlemen!!  J  He looks from here as if his eyes =
are closed and his ears are in pure bliss.  Guitar riffs are on - Kim =
comes to life and he and Ben and Chris go BERSERK!  Matt's hair flies =
again.
Ironically, just as Chris starts to speak, a girl who has fainted from =
the heat is carried outside through the doors near us.  Ironically, =
because Chris is saying "It's not hot in here, is it?  FUCK, no!  I =
should've brought my own jacket - I'm going to catch a cold in =
Melbourne!"  (Melbourne pronounced as all Americans pronounce it - =
Mel-BORN - instead of how we Australians say it:  MEL-ben.  I giggle to =
myself at his accent.)  "Thank goodness that tennis bullshit is over!"  =
[hoots from the crowd]  "Now we can do something REALLY important???like =
listen to LOUD music and drink BEER!!!"  [crowd cheers] =20
Before we know it, the familiar opening tune of PRETTY NOOSE bursts =
forth.  This sends the crowd cheering even harder.  Chris' voice - I =
must take note.  I listen closely.  Yes, suffering a bit at the start of =
each verse, but sounds reasonably good to me.  They must have cooling =
fans near the stage for Kim's hair blows back off his face now and then. =
 Now I remember to look at clothes.  Black jeans for all (can't see Matt =
of course).  Ben and Kim in black t-shirts as well.  I don't THINK Kim =
is wearing his Tool shirt - I remind myself to ask Hando later (he's =
somewhere in general admission, lucky devil, near the stage).  Chris is =
wearing a pale khaki green shirt with really short sleeves.  The scream =
at the end of Pretty Noose sounds fine.
The guy in front of me asks why I'm taking notes.  He thinks I'm a =
journalist.  I tell him "No, I'm an accountant!"  J  Then I explain this =
mailing list to him.
BURDEN IN MY HAND.  Wow.  This is really beautiful.  The opening verse =
is sung ever so perfectly - quiet, slow, mournful.  Chris is lit up in =
white light, while the rest of the band plays on in subdued lighting.   =
The chorus heats up with more pace as the whole band is highlighted, yet =
it still sounds so haunting. =20
Another girl is carried outside.  "Why the hell can't they just leave =
those doors open????" I wonder as a drop of sweat falls from my forehead =
onto my notebook.
Ben and Chris get new guitars for the next song????MY WAVE.  That's it.  =
I can't stand it any longer - I simply HAVE to get up and dance.  I =
shove my pen and notebook into my pocket and scramble over the people =
next to me to get to the aisle.  And away I go.  I can now see Matt's =
hands and sticks as well as his hair and half his face.  Steam really IS =
rising from his kit!!
"Fuck you all!"  screams Chris with his right fist high in the air.  The =
crowd knows what this song will be and screams like the roof is going to =
lift off.  (I wish it WOULD - maybe we'd all have some air to breathe =
then!)  Yes, it's TY COBB.  Ben sings the last bracket of "hard headed, =
fuck you all" while Chris takes a step back.  Ben removes his guitar at =
the end.  Some little piece is played here that I don't know - just a =
30-second bracket of something.  Search and Destroy, maybe?  No???as I =
was to discover later.
Ben, Kim and Matt seem to melt away, leaving Chris by himself, lit with =
a single spotlight.  BLACK HOLE SUN.  This is a brilliant moment for me, =
and I hurry to sit back with Blair, who simply adores this song.  Chris =
sounds very husky (sexy), and the crowd sings along with him.  Blair and =
I are holding hands, even though they're dripping with sweat (yech!).  =
Two girls are sitting on shoulders above the crowd, mesmerised, as we =
all are????.
Suddenly, before I even noticed the others take up their stands again, =
we hear "I got up feeling so down"????OUTSHINED!!  And, girls, Chris =
Cornell's shirt is OFF!  Damn tight pants.  "Show me the power, =
child?.." the crowd jump up and down as one, united.  This is where I =
feel so lucky to be a part of all this - being with others who seem to =
love this band and its music as much as I do???.
"This song's for Luther." Chris says quickly as my favourite Soundgarden =
song begins.  RUSTY CAGE.  Blair and I take one look at each other and =
head for the aisle.  One more girl is taken out the doors as Blair and I =
begin to dance.  We're boogying our asses off in this aisle - Toni, I'm =
thinking of you!!  The drawn out ending to this has me wondering if a =
new song had started that I don't know, but then it finishes as it =
usually does.  Blair howls the last "run" as loudly as Chris!!  J
Next comes the 11th song, a very slow version of HELTER SKELTER.  It's =
good to be able to relax and just sway to the music - we need time to =
catch our breath in this seemingly airless space we are captured in.
As seems to be the go nowadays, this merges into BOOTCAMP.  Again we =
sway slowly - everyone seems to be of the same mind as me and enjoys the =
chance to chill out a bit.=20
The peaceful vein continues with BLOW UP THE OUTSIDE WORLD.  This time =
as we sway I notice my legs are dripping with sweat.  Again, I curse =
myself for wearing jeans!  Ben walks around looking like he thinks this =
song goes for way too long??would he perhaps prefer to be able to do his =
Never Named?  (I wish they would have).  He wanders to the back corner =
to talk to a roadie, playing his bass all the while??
Next came one I didn't know.  Is this SEARCH AND DESTROY?  I wonder.  =
Yes, it is - it's what Hando sang for me at the Pizza Hut when I asked =
him to tell me what S&D sounds like.  Thanks, Hando, you sang it well!!  =
J
Boy, I long for Drawing Flies.  I remember it was played at most of =
their US concerts recently - would they be so kind as to play my =
second-favourite Soundgarden song here????
No.  They play RHINOSAUR.
Oh boy, oh boy.  Guess what came next?  (no, not Drawing Flies, alas, =
but something pretty damn good)??..SLAVES AND BULLDOZERS!!  The opening =
drums here are fantastic.  I don't think many of those in the crowd know =
it.  Ben hunches over - his neck rolls around, totally immersed in the =
music - wow he LOVES this song!!  J  He gives the crowd the finger.  =
Chris comes to stand behind him, seeming to say something in the back of =
Ben's ear.  Chris then goes to stage left and stands up on a block so he =
towers over the crowd.  He steps back down as the bass goes lower and =
the drums slow down in anticipation of Chris' deep slow voice (my =
favourite piece from all of Soundgarden's songs - the low part where he =
sings "every word I said is what I mean??").  I am getting enthused - =
but Kim makes me wait longer - the spotlight is on him and he is just =
magic.  Chris steps to the microphone, distorts his voice, makes it =
echo.  I can't make out what he's saying.  It sounds like ricocheting =
bullets - great sound.  Matt follows suit and makes his drums accompany =
Chris' noises expertly.  Chris' voice then goes so deep when he sings my =
favourite part.  The song's ending is drawn out - brilliant, just =
brilliant.
Kim raises his guitar above his head as if to throw it to the crowd.  =
Then all of them walk off the stage, the guitar still slowing winding =
down. =20
The crowd screams, demands, begs, whistles, stamps for more.  It's =
deafening in here!  JCP, surely?  AND Drawing Flies??  ( I cross my =
fingers).
Sure enough, they come back for an encore.  The lights are blue as they =
re-enter, and Ben is smoking.  He flicks it into the crowd (in a =
non-smoking hall) - this makes me smile. =20
"This song is about killing your boss".  MAILMAN it is.  "Riding you all =
the waaaaaaaaay" - that last "way" is ear-piercing, glass-shattering.  =
Chris has not lost any touch on his voice!!
Of course, I know what is to come next.  JESUS CHRIST POSE.  I can see =
Matt.  I make Blair watch his hands closely.  Man, he is fast.  My hands =
are fists, trying to keep up with Matt in mid-air.  This is such fun - I =
don't want it to end - this song has to go on forever!  Kim comes over =
to our side of the stage for the first time.  Dips his head - I notice =
how his hair is thinning on top.  Stands back and faces us on the side.  =
Tilts his head sideways to us in a salute.  We scream and I wave my arms =
at him - he looks so adorable.  The song eventually comes to an end.  L  =
Matt throws his drumsticks - the first lands on the stage but the second =
reaches far into the crowd.  He stands up and for the first time I can =
see him in full.  He is wearing short black shorts and a blue basketball =
singlet with white edging.
All of a sudden, as the guitar is still fading out, I notice my footy =
hero, Brad Pearce, standing near me!  I take a deep breath, and go up to =
ask him and Matthew Allen for their autographs.  I explain I'm from =
Adelaide, have driven all the way over to see Soundgarden, and think =
it's a bonus to see them also.  They oblige me.  The guitar is still =
loud, so I don't have a chance to talk much.  I want to ask them what =
they thought of the band, but don't want to invade on their privacy any =
longer, so I retreat back to where I was, happy to have seen them again.
Kim's long ending is breathtaking.  Then, alas, it's all over.  (no DF, =
but still, I'm elated with what I've just experienced).  There is no =
noise from the stage, the lights are back on.  It's 11.10 pm. =20
We flock outside like sheep - meet Hando and Greg and Brett.  Wait for =
Cameron and Andrew for a while, but don't see them.  In the meantime, we =
marvel with each other over what we've just experienced.  Greg loved =
hearing Mailman.  Hando tells me that at the end Ben's ankles were =
caught up in the cord from his bass.  He got angry at his technician =
about this, and then pushed his amp over.  Hando shuddered at this, =
knowing how much an amp like that would cost.  He said Ben looked very =
threatening.  {This must have happened as I was being the footy groupie, =
getting autographs}.  Hando also confirmed that Kim's t-shirt wasn't a =
Tool one - it had a small indistinguishable logo over to one side only.
The five of us walk back to our car, about 11.30 pm by this stage.  =
Blair takes a photo of me with the guys.  Then we hug each other =
goodbye, Blair and I say we might see Hando next Friday at the Adelaide =
Big Day Out.  I am so pleased I have met them, and shared my first =
Soundgarden experience with people from the list.
We drive back to Avoca full of energy.  I read my notes to Blair as we =
listen to Superunknown.  I take a long time to wind down.  Wow, what a =
night.  Sensational.  Unforgettable.  Soundgarden, I thank you from the =
bottom of my heart.  We certainly followed you into the desert of =
hotness at Festival Hall, as thirsty as we were??????and I plan to =
follow you again in only a few days' time!
Sorry, but I saw no vampire from where I sat.  Because I was on the side =
of the stage where the band entered and exited from, and where the sound =
techs/roadies watched from, if Eddie were anywhere lurking near the =
stage, I think he'd have been in my view.
Alas, I couldn't see him.
But I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled at this Friday's BDO..........
It took about 3 or 4 months for them to send my welcome packet, by the
way.
See ya,
Well.. I'm hoping since I live in Seattle that the packet will come
earlier...=)
Subject: Eddie Veder Spoting
I've heard all these rumours about Eddie Veder spoting at the Big Day
Out's and other Soundgarden gigs in Australia. Is this true? Can anyone
confirm it? I definetly did't see him at Melbourne's Big Day Out or at
Soundgarden's gig at Festival Hall in Melbourne.
How did SB perform at Sydney's BDO? Couldn't get a ticket unfortunately.
Subject: my Melbourne review....
This was weird.  I just noticed when people have reprinted parts of my review, a lot of times my paragraphs are ending with ???????
They were actually ending with ..............., and for some reason this damn Microsoft Exchange has gone a bit bonkers on me again.
Forgive me, please!  I don't usually use so many question marks!  :-)
