I would just E-mail Lance directly, but it seems everybody is posting their
joy to the list, so I thought I'd join in just to make all you people who
DIDN'T order FTMOD feel bad ;-)

Rating: ***** (out of five, of course)
Really cool new (to me) songs: Flutter Girl, Into the Void (Sealth - you
know if you take out the "al" it spells...oh nevermind) (though this one is
a bit long and it kind of loses my attention after a while...still like what
I hear of it though, really cool main guitar riff - anybody have the tab?
gee I guess I should close these parentheses...), Right Turn (though kinda'
sounds like AIC to me...), Hey Baby(Land of Rising Sun - catchy guitar
theme) . . .and . . . Rusty Cage w/ Johnny Cash!!!! heh heh . . . just
kidding . . . man, I was cracking up when I first heard that! One of SG's
heaviest song turned into country! Though I kinda' like that translation of
the little interlude riff (y'know, the part with the really screwed up
timing in the original version? you know what I mean...)...
I know, most of you are probably surprised that things like Kyle Petty, Cold
Bitch, and Toy Box aren't on my list . . . they probably will be eventually
. . . it always takes me a bit longer to get into SG's heavier songs...the
first time I heard BMF I hated (well, slight exaggeration, but "didn't quite
like it all that much" just isn't quite as interesting, is it?) it! ('course
now it's one of my favorites...)
Not really cool songs: Blind Dogs (it gets kind of better, but that intro
riff is just too screwy/outofkey for me . . . maybe it'll grow on me...),
Exit Stonehenge (but that's a joke, right?), Motor Cycle Loop (why did you
even put that on there Lance? It's not really a song!...I actually already
have it though...made that mistake when I got the FOBD single w/ it...it
said "lyrics by Kim Thayil" me:"cool! Kim Thayil!"...didn't realize that it
didn't mention who wrote the MUSIC...)
Just Plain Wierd songs: Spoonman(Remix), Big Dumb Sex(Remix), Jerry Garcia's
Finger (I thought "Jerry Garcia" meant wild guitar solos from everybody's
favorite lead guitarist...hey, I thought Chris said they didn't do elevator
music?...that's what that one [middle?] riff sounds like!), Sub Pop Rock
City (mainly referring to that weird little conversation thingy)

If you've read this far . . . you must be as bored as I was when I was
typing it . . . wow . . .congratulations! oh, buy the way:
THANK YOU LANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QUESTION: Anybody that can help - What songs one FTMOD are written by SG and
which are covers? I know Into the Void, Stray Cat Blues, Girl U Want, and
Come Together are covers, but are there any others?

I guess this is pretty long now . . . I'll stop harrassing you folks ;-)

Subject: Scariest/joyful songs...what would you do...personalities...

Scariest songs - I haven't heard Beyond the Wheel enough to give any
commentary to that, but I've noticed that there's one song in particular
that has not been mentioned that I thought would have been: 4th of July. At
least the beginning, with all those weird background noises/effects during
the intro, and those lyrics, for example: "Where the baptized drown" . . "I
thought it was the end" . . etc.

Joyful songs - This is easy, you know what it is! SPOONMAN!!!!! You can't
beat it when it comes to joyful!!

What would you do? - (I'm probably the only male responding to this) It
doesn't really matter what he's singing, whether it be Spoonman or BUTOW or
whatever, either way, I suddenly whip out my guitar and join in . . . on
whatever song it is I whip out an amazing Satriani-style solo that goes on
for about five minutes, at the end of which Chris compliments my amazing
guitar playing and says he wants to introduce me to Kim. Since all the fish
jumped on shore to hear our amazing music, we gather most of them to bring
along, but one manages to flop (FOPP?) itself back in the water (Chris makes
some comment about planning to write a song about that...) . . .
. . . I'll skip all the details, but in the end, as you can probably guess,
I become the fifth member of Soundgarden with our hit song Fishy (sorry, I
tried to think of some creative SG reference, like Fish in My Hand, or
Rhinofish, or Never the Fish Forever, but they just didn't seem to work...),
which features me and a 10-minute guitar solo :-)
ahh....

ok, back to reality, next topic?
Personalities similar to band members: I actually see similarities between
me and all band members except Ben (I'm not much of a spitter). As a
songwriter I'm very similar to Chris, including both lyrically and
guitar-wise, although as more of a lead guitarist I have to lean towards
Kim, who also is similar because of interest in psychology (although I
haven't really taken any classes or anything yet, I just find it really
interesting)...and finally, I think we ALL have a similarity to Matt :-)
We're here.

and that's it for today (or at least for now) . . .

Kelly I wanted to thank you for sharing your very personal interpretation

your interpretation, too. That's really sad and I think it was brave to

I mean, I understand what Seth is trying to say, but I really don't see
where Caryn or Shroom have needed administrative protection lately.
Nothing has been said to Caryn that comes even close to some of the
poison she has been known to spew. I imagine that most of us who have
been on the list for any length of time have contributed to the page (at
least I know those of us who post regularly have). Does that gives us all
permanent immunity, or is that only reserved for a chosen few? I think
this kind of attitude sets a poor precedent on the list. Is it meant to
keep people from flaming Caryn, at the risk of being kicked off the list?
Come on, the little tiffs going on lately are nothing compared to some
we've seen in the past. I'm very surprised that nobody else has commented
on this. Are we all afraid of our fearless leader?

I think, in fact, that MORE tolerance is called for with new list
members, who need time to learn how THIS list operates. Granted, they
should lurk for a while to get to know what's going on and definitely
check out the web page to get their questions answered, but even people
who have internet access aren't necessarily computer and internet savvy.
And some people are just more compulsive than others (I could name a few
oldies who fit in here too) in what and when they post. I've been glad to
see more gentle reminders posted to newbies lately. People are much more
likely to respond positively to a kindly worded suggestion than a flame.

Chris wrote:
>Whatever it is, does it have to clutter interesting threads

>turned into something wonderful!

I agree. Amid the petty feuding we've had a couple really interesting
threads. Besides the scariest song thread there's also the personal
interpretations thread, which I think is great. I also agree with Chris
that the best way to deal with posts you deem to be stupid is to ignore
them. The list content and interest ebbs and flows, just like life. If
you go with the flow it seems to rebound. It will be very interesting to
see what happens, however, after Seth graduates (depends, I guess, on who
takes over).

Now that I've probably pissed off the higher echelons of the list
hierarchy, I thought I'd contribute my 2 cents to the scariest/most
joyful thread. I agree that 665/Beyond the Wheel/667 is really creepy as
far as the sound and mood, but I think Nazi Driver is a really scary
song. It sounds almost vicious. And I think Dusty is without a doubt the
most positive SG song. In fact it is the ONLY SG song I would even
consider describing as "joyful". How about this one: anyone want to
contribute their thoughts on the "sexiest" SG song?

I have two things to share with everyone. First of all, there is s
Superunknown-era interview with Kim, Chris and Ben on the Mesa Boogie
home page. The URL is:

   www.mesaboogie.com/US/Artists/sg

Second, I recently came across a copy of the American Recordings
single of Johnny Cash's version of Rusty Cage, b/w Soundgarden's
original recording. I don't really need this item, so I have decided
to give it away to one of you. Anyone interested in a chance should
email me privately. Right now is Friday, so I'll allow until Monday
afternoon to give plenty of people a shot. I'll pick a winner and
mail it out to that person completely and totally FREE! One chance

Cool...on the radio (yes, the End) this morning they played a PJ tune
(forgive me, don't know the name..)

The DJs were bs'ing and one asked who they got to play the chimes, was
it God or a member of the band? Then one asked if maybe they went over
to "The Sound Garden" to get that sound. Alas, they said that The
Sound Garden did not make that particular sound but HEY, they mentioned it!!!

Looking for any SG content on this Friday morning! :)

Plus, Karen Cornell will be coming on later today to do some readings,
so we can find out how our weekend is going to turn out. I'm there!!
I'll post more if anything interesting transpires...

Later!

Subject: Clarification on "immunity"
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I've already responded to Kathy's message privately, but it seems like
some people are confused about what I said regarding "immunity" and
contributions. This is what I wrote:

>Caryn and Shroom, for example, have what amounts to
>permanent immunity (and don't you *dare* let this go to your heads,
>you two) -- they've both been around long enough and contributed
>enough that they would have to *really* push me to remove them from

>becoming less and less tolerant each day.

Let me clear this up: I'm talking about contributions to the *list*,
not the Web page. How could I make decisions about list matters based
on someone's involvement with the site? There are tons of people that
contribute to one and not the other, and that's 100% okay with me. I'm
sorry if this was misinterpreted as my judging your "worth" on the
list by the stuff you've sent me for the site.

Another clarification: Caryn and Shroom are *not* the only people who
have "immunity" on the list. I was just using them as examples. There
are plenty of people I would never unsub...

Well, I loved the idea of producing a SG cover compilation about 2 weeks
go... then my boss hit me with a major development project that I've
been working on like a bastard... I still have many messages that I
have planned on replying to, but it's funny how real life really sneaks
up and bites sometimes. I'm still willing to produce a compilation tape
of SOMMsters doing SG covers. I had this whole plan that I was going to
post until, what I call 'the Death Project', arrived on my desk. I've
had 1 beer too many to discus it now, though...

I'm right with you, Kath--this little post from Seth had me wondering what
went on that led to such...adoration or whatever. And maybe it's time to
ask, too, if anyone else is a little put off that the public rudeness from
Caryn has gone without a word of explanation now that she's back on the list
and posting in a joyful tone. Am I the only one who finds it odd there
wasn't at a least a "hey, I think I was a little out of line and I
apologize" to those of us who sat thru all that??

As for the new people...SETH! SHAME ON YOU! (no, I'm not afraid of
Seth!<grin>) This list should welcome new people. I agree newbies have been
a little ignorant, AS IN asking stuff we've already discussed either in the
past or just recently, or they ask simple questions about Sg. Well, now, is
this list not meant to be a place for people to come for info? So what if
they ask stuff like that? Were all of you born knowing everything about the
band? These new people could be told nicely--NICELY-- to check the page,
the FAQ etc, if they have web access. Or, Sethmeister, here's a
suggestion--I just subbed to a humor list and got a nice little info sheet.
Are the newbies automatically sent an info sheet on how to unsub, where the
page is, etc? If not, would that help w/ your short temperedness to these
poor new listers? I just see no reason to flame them or be nasty to them on
the list....if they leave the list b/c of that, what opinion will they have
about the list? Perhaps not a very good one and they'll tell other
potential members not to bother b/c of the shoddy treatment.

With new people, however, I am far less tolerant, and am
>>becoming less and less tolerant each day.

That was a bit of a gaffe to say that publicly! Might as well say newcomers
not welcome anyplace on the web the somms addie is listed!

>Come on, the little tiffs going on lately are nothing compared to some

Maybe we're a little hesitant knowing our words could get us flamed. I know
I no longer post much b/c Iwonder about reactions, and this is a forum were
we shouldn't be feeling like that.

Kathie, very eloquently worded!

It will be very interesting to
>see what happens, however, after Seth graduates (depends, I guess, on who

Yeah, it'll be interesting, b/c I'll probably be on the list at home by then
and will be around it all summer for a change...

How about this one: anyone want to
>contribute their thoughts on the "sexiest" SG song?

Put in my vote for Mailman! I love CC's growlly voice on that one. 'Course
it could also count as my scariest song b/c whoever ticked him off, I
wouldn't want to be the one he's singing about!

Well kids, it's almost the weekend and is par for the course here on

"The Making of the Su[perunknown" is also one of those compact books but
it is written by Mary Elizabeth Horgrove (1996 publishing date) In the last
week I have run into it at 3 different Best Buy (electronic/appliance/music)
stores. The books are in the music section under Soundgarden just like it
was a real CD. Mine came in a jewel case. I think it cost $4 or $5US. No
pictures lots of quotes on each song. They list a live Kickstand video.
Anybody ever see that???? And yes Seth's page is in the Bibliography. toni

there are the common dufus boot company goof ups <let me drown has
now become just plain "drown" according to them> and some crowd woo's
and yeah's and ect. crowd shit. but Waiting for the sun is on here, a
song i have previsouly never heard- and I like it purty good i guess.
and the BHS solo sounds great with one teensy voice thing in the 2nd
verse. but the crowd is kinda clueless and is just dumbfounded by the
new version and doesn't clap or yell or anything afterwards. >= (
it's from the Irvine Lolla date, so the list is kinda short. 13 songs
w/ the Inside the Upside interview tacked on at the end. = ) funny
funny. = ) Shroom- great shots of chris on the inside of the insert!
and on the back!
JCP sounds really nice- my wave fades in and out a bit during a
verse. but other than that- it's a damn good buy! later, <and yes-

Subject: yet another clarification

i have mr. perlman's express written permission to post this, so apologies
for lack of direct soundgarden content:

wherever any of you got the idea that i have any wish or desire or
whatever to "take over" this administration of this list or seth's web
page, you're crazy. i've gotten three promotions in the last six months,
i'm on the road half the month as it is (writing this from an airport
lounge in la guardia), and i wouldn't have time even if i wanted to.

but i don't. and why i could understand why the holier-than-thou list
echelons (*i* have to apologize? what about the vitriol that i received?
no one has to apologize for that? you didn't see my personal email) would
be concerned if i was going to run the list, i don't see that that has to
do with the web page. i would be honored if seth thinks i was talented
enough to do so, i personally have great respect for his online ability
and am trying my darndest to hire him when he graduates (after europe,
seth, *after* europe ;-)), i would like to know how any of you (by
'you' i mean the people making these allegations - there are certainly
many people whose opinions i value highly in this area, but none of you
are commenting on this or making these outlandish accusations) are
entitled to decide whehter or not i'm qualified to run the page. i think
there are very few people on this list who are qualified and i'd certainly
be one of them in terms of web and online and design experience, and
experience in running a relatively large web site. however, in terms of
sg knowledge, there are many others who can run circles around me and i'm
the first to say that.

but i don't want either. it doesn't interest me in the least.
neither of them. so stop trying to order seth around, and stop trying to
tell me how to post and what tone to use. if chris mackenzie and geoff
and the list thug can post telling people what to do and how to post (and
there were others), i'm certainly entitled to post about mailing list
etiquette. i did it for the benefit of the list, it wasn't my opinion or
even my writing, i took it from established sources so y'all couldn't
bitch that i was trying to tell the list what to do again. y'all won't be
satisfied until i unsub again, and that's not your decision to make.
neither it is your decision as to who will take over the page and/or the
list at such time that seth may or may not decide to abidicate his
responsibility.

personally, i'm more insulted that my web ability was dissed than
anything else. ;->  (i don't like running mailing lists.  *shrug*  i don't
know how seth does it.) to the specific party --- let's see the web sites
*you've* developed, okay? then let's talk about who's qualified. i'm not
saying i'm an expert, but i'm way more qualified than most, and certainly
more than you. it's not an insult or personal -- just a fact. *shrug*

Maybe it tok me awhile, but Soundgarden creates deep emotions in me as well.
Chris has a way of expressing strong feelings (mostly sad and depressing)
and they strike a serious chord.

Shroom has a great point. Most of SG's songs stir something within all of
us. I don't know of a single person, whether they are SG fans or not, who
has not been moved by their music. The song that I feel is the sexiest
(well, the one that moved me the most) is Zero Chance. It is such a sad
song, about love lost and a feeling of eternal lonlieness. It really has
meaning for me. I am pretty sure I don't have the same feelings for Chris as
Shroom, but I can draw parallels from what he writes.

I'm just adding my thoughts. Thanks for your time.

Well, I'll respond to my own thread.

I relate sooooo much to Chris. We are both very emotional Cancers, we kinda
even think alike. I can say that because I write songs and/or poems, and
then I hear a Soungarden song with the same topic.....like Blow up the
Outside World....or even deeper....Pretty Noose. People even call me the
female version of him. There are soo many other similarities though. Some
real deep ones.

I love motorcycle loop, but then I have been known to listen to Lou Reed's
Metal Machine Music on purpose.

I have been put to work dubbing From the Mouth of Decadence for friends
who just didn't listen to me when I told them to order it (fools).

Here's what they had to say:

"Lance is a saint" (my husband said that)

"This is cool. I can't believe somebody gave you that for only $6."

"Can you copy it for me? I'll never find all those songs anywhere else."

"My favorite Black Sabbath song is on there. I have to get a copy."

Props to Lance!

I must say, in defense of seth, that our listadmin may not be aware of the
extent and nature of some of the flames. The most vitriolic flames I
experienced as a result of my contributions to this list were sent to me

Hi Tiffany,
Have you ever listened to Glenn Branca? If you like Metal Machine, you
might like Glenn's stuff. Check out

Shades of Sonic Youth also.

well, it wasn't a freakin' limo, but a wreck nonetheless

OK folks. Let's not let this get out of hand here.

Regarding the clarification issues: I always try to be as unbiased as
possible, so please read with an open mind: The facts seem to be that
Caryn obviously made some folks angry a while back, and justifiably so.
Since her resubbing to the list, I think she has made an effort to be
very courteous to everyone. I think Seth's comments may not have
resonated their true intent and may have struck a nerve with those who
were personally very offended by others during the whole Chicago
SOMMsfest saga. I think *both* sides here should make an effort to
smooth over these angry feelings and try to put these occurances in the
past.

Regarding Newbies: I think Seth's original comments were only trying
to emphasize the point that we don't want list traffic to be reduced to
a bunch of immature bickering. There is a list social structure here
that must be learned and understood by newcomers. Just as if you were
to move to a new town or go to a different school, newcomers must learn
the structure and figure out where they fit in. No none is saying that
we don't want newbies, we are just saying that we want newbies to take
the time to learn the list and practice common net etiquette.

Wrap Up: Noone on this list should feel uncomfortable to post and maybe
it's good to be getting all of these feelings off of our chest. But
instead of having this resonate into a huge personal battle, let's have
it result into something positive... and may we all try to learn a
little about *getting along with people*, which is one of the most
effective tools in life.

I swear...I have finally found THE picture of Chris. You all HAVE to see
the new Guitar Magazine. There's a miniscule pic of him on the front,
then this beautiful one inside. (Sorry if this was already discussed,
but I literally lost my breath when I saw this picture.) I know, I
know...you're all going to get the magazine and be all excited, and then
get all upset when you see it. It just really hits me though. It's so
beautiful and so Chris-in-action. He looks so into what he's doing. He
looks angelic, but in that Chris sort of way. I LOVE this picture. I
would die if I could get a poster of it...any suggestions? :D On another
note, I remembered that I wanted to respond to the fishing story, but
Shroom's response came first, and that was pretty much how I envisioned
it. I mean, minus the Matt and Susan encounters. I see some swimming
going on, then some driving (plus a few brief stops...what for?! Oh, I
don't know...:)), then some fun at the Cornell home. Haha. I don't think
I should get into details-Seth might hunt me down and do the absolute
worst thing I can imagine, steal my new picture. Frightening thought...
I better go...I have important things to do, like stare at this new pic.
Maybe if I stare at it long enough, it will turn into a poster. Hum,
maybe not. Oh well, I can always hope...:) Go get that magazine. Luv
Margret.

For those of you who don't remember, Right Turn is perfomed by Alice
Mudgarden, which is Alice in Chains with Chris Cornell & Mark Arm (I think...
from Mudhoney), from AIC's EP SAP.

But Chris is so prominent (makes the song in my opinion) that I thought the
song had a place on the collection.

Subject: Sexiest SG songs... (long post)

>How about this one: anyone want to contribute their thoughts on
>the "sexiest" SG song?

Ok... there's a few of 'em. One of the reasons I love SG so much is
because they create such strong feelings in me... and this particular thread
just struck me as ideal to respond to. *shocker* Everyone knows that I find
Chris to be almost unbearably attractive, but his music is what first grabbed
me. There's a girl who's been posting the same message in an AOL SG board
repeatedly for the last couple of weeks... she says "I want to have sex with
Chris' voice." At first I blew it off, because she posted the damn thing so
many times it got annoying... but once I really thought about it... the idea
isn't very far out there. I've always believed that Chris' voice is like sex
personified, and there *are* certain songs that express it better than
others. Hmmm... actually Soundgarden (as a whole) has a wonderful kind of
sexual synergy going on. It's nothing outwardly noticable like the RHCP...
where they run around smooching each other and wearing outrageous clothing
(not that I can't appreciate them for it... but that's a post for another
list ;-). Anyway, here's my "top ten sexy SG songs" list.... (in no certain
order)

"Slaves and Bulldozers" is definitely up there, because the song is so
heavy and sensual... listening to it makes you feel like Chris is about to
materialize in front of you... sans the majority of his clothing of course.
;-) This is an excellent song to... hey, I just remembered that the average
age on this list is steadily getting lower, so I'll move to the next song
now...
"Ugly Truth" is outstanding... "You gave yourself... if you were mine to
give I might throw it away..." Angry relationships can sometimes be the most
delicious and exciting, in my opinion. Have you ever had a lover who you
positively hated, but the sexual chemistry between the two of you was so
charged... you couldn't help but be drawn to them? Angry love is
unbelievably erotic, in my opinion.
"Beyond the Wheel" just totally annihilates me every time I listen to
it. It's exhilarating and... very hard to describe. Ok, picture yourself
outside on a really hot day... and you're sweating like crazy... but suddenly
the sun goes behind the clouds and a moment later a cool breeze comes along
and doesn't just cool you down... it freezes you. That's this song to me.
And because it's so mentally shocking, it's also extremely sexy...
I also find "Pretty Noose" to be absolutely and undeniably one of the
sexiest songs I've ever heard in my life. It's alot like "Ugly Truth."
Angry love is again the topic, and both songs are wrathful and passionate.
Although "Pretty Noose" seems to be more furious than "Ugly Truth."
"Incessant Mace"... the whole song is sexy, but especially when Chris
sings "Don't feel it's not too late to start..." Now *that* moves me. ;-)
Oh hell... the whole song moves me. Chris moves me. What a newsflash,
hmmm?
"Mailman." Yet ANOTHER angry love song. When Chris sings "and now I
send you a message of love..." it sounds COMPLETELY sarcastic and inverse...
and since I happen to find sarcasm a complete turn-on... this song just works
for me. ;-) The way that Chris draws out the 's' in "send" and "message"...
all I can say is *purrrrrrrrrrr*...
"4th of July" has the vibe. I love the way they layered Chris' voice,
and even though the song is so polished... it still wins a nomination for one
of the top ten.
"Blind Dogs"... Chris' voice is like silk. This song wraps itself
around you... it's very sensual. I particularly like the version on Pearl
Jam's "Self Pollution Radio." If you haven't heard it kiddies, do yourself a
favor and find it.
"Nowhere But You"... first of all, I have to say how glad I am that this
song wasn't chosen to be put on Superunknown. They would have polished it
up... and that would have been a HUGE mistake. The song is absolutely
perfect the way it is. You can almost see Chris as he sings it... the song
is raw and kind of sad... but very sexy, all the same.
Last one... and if you bothered to read this far, I've got to say
thanks. I don't usually post about what songs mean to me or how I feel about
them, but like I said... this particular thread grabbed me. I'm sure this
last song won't be a shock to anyone, because I've been babbling about it for
the last few weeks. "New Damage" with Brian May... found on 'Alternative
NRG' and 'Ultramega Unknown.' I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
Chris COMPLETELY goes off in this song. His vocals are the best that I've
ever heard. Ever. End of story. ;-)
              <kisskiss>
                            Shroomy

Re-run (sorry, but it's getting late and I've got to go ;-)
"Hey Shroom, wanna play 'Spank the Bad Rock Star' again?"
      ~ Chris Cornell
(Words not necessarily said in that order...) <~~~ my disclaimer
