From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

Some of you may have experienced the unexpectedly long downtime the SG
website underwent earlier today as part of the server hardware upgrade
that I mentioned last week. The bad news is that the upgrade was not
completed. The Stargate techies halted the procedure because the
system had already been down too long, so it will have to be resumed
at some point in the future.

Anyway, I apologize for the inconvenience of the site being down, and
I wish it could have been for good reason.

From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

I know a bunch of sommsters have "Stolen Prayers" and many more would
like to have it, so I thougth I would share this experience.
I bought SP in June and really enjoyed it. I quickly dubbed it to tape
so I could listen to it in my car. So, the CD itself hasn't received
especially heavy play. But, yesterday, when I went to play it in the CD
player, the damn thing's gone all staticy. It's not skipping like a CD
with a scratch or a piece of lint on it. It sounds like a crappy AM
radio station. This was very frustrating. I looked at the data side of
the disc and noted it was gold, rather than the more common silver.
I could go on, but I'll just ask: does anyone know what's up with this? I
know there are different materials used for CDs, especially write-to CDs.
So, is SP on a particularly bad quality disc? Is everyone's like this, or
am I just lucky to get this limited edition?
Finally, I would suggest that if you buy SP, to re-record it on to a CD
(if you can find such facilities).

And call me anything you like for this comment, but knowing that someone on

Subject: my 2 cents

ok....I haven't posted recently so I figured I would put my two cents in
about this scary song deal. I agree with most that "Beyond the Wheel" is a
scary song. I think though that "Searching with My Good Eye Closed" is
scarier, as far as the music is concerned anyway. Or maybe I think it's a
better song with a certain scariness about it. My next choice would have
been "Like Suicide," the acoustic version.

I just got "Alive in the Superunknown" and yes it it worth buying....to back
up everyone elses synopsis.

Thanks to Dena for the shirts....I got them a couple of weeks ago.... sorry I
didn't reply earlier.

A random question for all: Does anyone think that "Pretty Noose" sounded a
little like an Alice In Chains sort of style when you first heard the
song.....Just a thought.

One more though before I go which is semi-Soundgarden related. On the
Screaming Trees album "Uncle Anesthesia," Chris plays the recorder and does
some backup singing behind Mark Lanegan. The first time I heard this I
thought it was the coolest thing I ever heard. Anyone else think so? BTW,
the song Chris plays the recorder on is "Lay Your Head Down."

Subject: Mixed Emotions!!

Well, I'm in a real emotional rut: I'm starting back to school today
(YUCK) and I feel the weight of sadness dropping in on me because of a
not-so-exciting anniversery coming up around the corner. Well, since one of
the topics on the list is personal interpertations, I thought I would share
one. Well, it's only part of Overfloater. The one part that's not printed
with the song, I think it's something like "Breath and take it in and gently
blow it out. Drink it down and swallow hard again." (please someone correct
me if I'm wrong about these 2 sentences, but that is what it sounds like to
me) and then "Hold the potion up. Tear your shadow down. Remember to forget
and then rename your shame." Well, this whole verse, and the rest of the
song, reminds me of my mom.
"Breath and take it in and gently blow it out"
~She was taking her life and what she was doing to herself in slowly but she
knew it was going to kill her. Basically she knew she was doing harm to
herself but was helpless in a way~
"Drink it down and swallow hard again"
~She was an alcoholic and she was dependent on it but she knew that every
drink she took is one she didn't really want or need~
"Hold the potion up"
~To me it's the alcohol that she held up or used to shield herself from the
outside world and her own life~
"Tear your shadow down"
~Her shadow being her former self, the person she was before she got
addicted~
"Remember to forget and then rename your shame"
~She could forget when she drank about how she was hurting those around her
so it made her guilt easier to live with. If she masked it as something
else, then it wouldn't bother her for the time being~
Well, sorry to be such a downer but since it was one of the topics on the
list and you guys/gals seem to be the only ones I can express my feelings
about a Soundgarden song with, I felt it was okay. Sorry!!!!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*ON A MUCH CHIPPERY NOTE*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Much praise goes out to Shroomy's NEW AND IMPROVED web page. I would just
like to take this time to say that it's even better that before and it
brightens my day to check it out, along with Seth's page, and SOMMS. Also,
seeing that I get a CC Pic Of The Day in my mailbox makes me a VERY HAPPY
CAMPER and as you can tell from the first part of my post, I need some
laughes. Oh, and the review that Ben gave her web page cracked me up!!!!
One more thing, I really don't think any of Soundgarden's songs are scary or
creepy but if I had to pick one it would be Beyond the Wheel. I think
because of the tune and the way Chris screams and then sings in a lower voice
towards the end. CPEEPY!!!! If I were alone in a dark house with some mad
man tryong to kill me; that is not the song I would want playing in the
background. By the way, can't you tell I just saw that movie Scream. Well,
I've rambled on enough so thanks for being patient and listening!!! Take
care and be sweet!!

Stay Cool,
Kelly :)

Hey everyone. I have a question that I am sure one of you can
answer. Whats is Into The Upside? I keep hearing about it but I am not
knowing what it is. I am just now really getting into collecting
Soundgarden CD'S, and at the moment I haven't even scratched the
surface. I have OLTRAMEGA OK, LOUDER THAN LOVE, BADMOTERFINGER,
SUPERUNKNOWN, DOWN ON THE UPSIDE, SONGS FROM THE SUPERUNKNOWN, and my
only import PUSH. I have been calling around Tampa, Florida (which is
where I live) and I can't find LOUDEST LOVE(import from Japan I think)
I know that I still need SCREAMING LIFE/FOPP & TEMPLE OF THE DOGG,
butt I was hoping that maybe one of the collectors could E-MAIL me and
let me know what other main ones that I'm missing. I know this new
addiction will probley cost me a fortune.

I would really appreciate if someone could help me out. I was also
wondering how long it usually takes to get any information after
sending off for membership to he Soundgarden Fan Club. I sent a $12.00
money order about 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything and I
was kinda getting scared that it may not have gotten there.

My first post and I think I must of asked about 20 questions, I hope that you all arn't
annoyed at me already. No more questions.

I haven't heard Johnny Cash's Rusty Cage yet, but I agree with Chris (not
*the* Chris) that Soundgarden covering a Cash song would be pretty cool.
However, I can't really imagine anyone making a very successful job of
turning my favourite songs into reggae/ska/brass band music - unless it was
Soundgarden themselves.

But how about Body Count returning the favour for Cop Killer and covering
Mailman?

Then I got to thinking about who would contribute to a Soundgarden tribute
album, if ever one is made. But instead of bands that Soundgarden had
influenced, I'd like to hear some of the bands and artists who influenced
Soundgarden (intentionally or otherwise)- or bands they grew up listening
to. This is a total fantasy because a lot of the bands don't exist anymore.

Bauhaus could cover Entering

Led Zep or Page/Plant would do Dusty

Kiss would have to record Sub Pop Rock City

And the first time we heard She Likes Surprises, Trev and I both said
'Captain Beefheart!' simultaneously.

Um..then of course, there's always Jon Bon Jovi's version of Flutter Girl!
(Ow! DeeDee! Stop - it was a joke :-)!!!)

may be the general atmosphere or the sensations it rouses...).A
difficult thing is finding out the not-scary ones! So let's start
another mass-sommsters-sounding... *What's the most JOYFUL sg song
ever?!?* Maybe if you write in to vote the scariest song you could
also vote for the most joyful...would take a short time and be *very*
interesting!!! Anyway,my personal vote goes to "dusty"...hey,
"nothing's gonna put me down!"

"they're waiting for you Little Joe..."

Hey all, I was just curious about something. I am a devout member of
Soundgarden and am having the hardest time trying to find their earlier
material. You know, louder than love, screaming life/fopp, flower, and
especially, the Somms version of badmotorfinger. Any suggestions or

I have a feeling that zippy and his army never recorded. it may
have been just one of those bands you put together to play for your
friends/school. if my calculations are correct, kim was in the band in
'78, and left the area in '81 for seattle (thus comes the demise of the
band), so I guess we will never get to hear a studio version of 'if I were
a bomb, I'd explode in your face' :)

if I remember correctly, kim said something similar to this
recently in some guitar magazine. I think it was something along the lines
of: "they were buttrock until I met jerry and he listened to our stuff" :)

Chris' long quote about the meaning and every word he said i could relate to,
just like the lyrics. EXACTLY how he stated the meaning of the song is
exactly how i relate the lyrics, although its a depressing correlation, i
still find that indescribably amazing.
i could go into detail more, but just thought i would mention it really quick

  22/01/97

WOOOHOOOOO :)

Back I am, Soundgarden only just left the stage about 20 minutes ago, my
ears are rining like crazy (is it worse if the ring in two pitches?)up,
down, up, down. I don't think sleep will come easy tonight.

Ok ON with the show.

Get to festival hall, with a large number of ppl wondering around outside
sticking in out in the cool night air before heading into the den of hell
known as Festival Hall (well it's not that bad just a little hot, I had to
make it sound good) My friend and I bought shirts first so we run them back
to the car and no loose them during the show. The long seelve BMF shirt and
a JCP tour shirt are now in my collection. side note: I asked for the Jesus
Christ Pose shirt and the lady selling shirts goes: It's just Jesus
Pose....We don't want to affend anybody...I asked her what drugs she was on
and told her to get me the Jesus Christ Pose shirt.

Ran into Blind Dog and Quiet Joe just after this. To find out some news that
well I'll let them tell it. Enough to say they are lucky buggers :) :) They
seemed to be as hyper as me running around back and forth before ducking
inside with a last wave to me as I waited for my friend to come back from
the car.

You Am I had just started as I made it inside a PACKED out Festival Hall
(holds 8000 ppl or something) For those that didn't see You am I when they
toured with SG you missed a great band. While I am not a You am I fan, I
never mind seeing them live. But it was hard to watch with a critical eye as
I knew as soon as they left the stage the band I was waiting for would start
some meaty guitar licks :) You Am I had about a 45mins set that was great,
especially the brass section, I liked that addition.

As the guitar techs etc ran on to the stage to set up, I 'll worked my way
towards to front, ending up about 20 meters from the stage. As they sound
checked the guitars/amps etc you could hear how chunky the guitars sounded!!
bloody awesome...even with just the tech strumming out a few riffs a meaty
sound filled the hall. The bass, made the whole place vibrate!! One hit of a
string and I found myself vibrating!! Never seen this from a bass guitar,
maybe a drum kit but a bass!!! Man it was cranked up loud :) (I guess I
don't really need my hearing anyway)

Then the lights go out, and the Musical Intro kicks in.....whatever it was
it sounded awesome :)

And then we hear the first notes of Spoonman as the band run on stage! There
is a HUGE surge of ppl at the front...I was standing just behind the surge
so didn't get trapped. PPl taking up 15 meters of space got squshed into
about 8 meters or so I one big sweep!! it soon bounced back and sorted
itself out and everyone was happy.

Ok set list time...as close as I can get...if it's wrong I am sure Justin
will correct me (Justin if you remember better please post the correct list)
This is as close as I can get anyway: ( I know I am missing a few somewhere!!)

Spoonman
SWMEC
Let me Drown
Ty Cobb
Pretty Noose
Burden in My Hand
Blackhole Sun (solo)
Outshined
Rusty Cage
My Wave
Helter Skelter
Boot Camp
Search and Destroy
BUTOW
Hands all Over
Head Down
Slaves and Bulldozers (with Everybody has something to hide except me and my
monkee)

Encore:
(what the hell was it here!! I can't remember sorry)
JCP
Nothing to Say

Ok highlights!! :) Kim, Ben, Matt and Chris :) Kim playing while red lights
glow though the smoky haze behind him....was awesome...looked like him in
this dark evil light and nothing else, just him his head down playing his
guitar and this wicked lighting, reminded me of the bit in BUTOW video where
the wall blows up behind Kim...looked like that for about 30 seconds.

Ben... The crowd is there for Ben's amusement :) That's what it looked
like...he was having fun...picking up different ppl in the audience pointing
at them..doing hand gestures (not all rude) dancing around, playing with the
bass tech not being mean or anything..tho one stage it didn't look like he
snaped but soon was back to his happy spitting self.

Matt... What to say...can the boy drum :) And he can play bass too... more
later. Matt is stuck up there behind his kit, but he makes you feel his
presence no matter what.

Chris: Skipping across the stage :) yes skipping :) Different things he
called out during the show: "Go fucking off, come on (something) it's up to
you GO FUCKING OFF"

'Do a little dance, see guys do that little goofy dance and you'll pick up a
girl like that, (snaps fingers) you'll be in'

Before BHS, plays 2 notes and the crowd cheers, cause it's just chris on
stage with the lights directed at him 'I think you know this song..this song
is for YOU' Plays 2 notes again 'It sounds like something doesn't it' Plays
again 'It definatly sounds like a song' Plays again 'yes I think it sounds
like a song I know' Plays again 'Come on SING IT, SING IT' before starting
BHS itself. With the crowd trying to sing-along but Chris's voice just
drowns everyone elses out.

umm a few other memerable quotes that I have forgotten. Justin you pick up any?

And for those that care ;) and I know there are a few of you....Chris
dressed in black, buttons mostly done up, slowly they became undone as the
show progressed until towards the end, the shirt was compelete open and his
sweaty muscular chest was exposed. (and I have to admit it is a well toned
chest, great development even in the stomache) and he came on stage for the
encore with no shirt at all.

Overall the band seemed to be really enjoying themselves. All where happy
laughing at each other. Plenty of movement around the stage was great.

Ok more bits and pieces: The first encore song (what was it!! damn this
memory of mine) ends off with Ben running around behind the drum kit,
grabbing drum sticks and started playing and Matt jumping off the kit and
running over and picking up the bass. I am sure it was Tim Rodgers (From You
AM I, so one tell me if it was) who also came running on stage grabed 2 drum
sticks and started playing aswell. I figured they need four drum sticks at
once to replace Matt on drums :) Matt prowled around the stage with the bass
sticking out playing away and loving being in center stage out the front as
the crowd went off :)

Quickly Matt returned to the kit, as the rest of the band moved to the edge
of the stage, lights focus in on Matt as he starts smashing into his kit,
after about 20 seconds he changes and smashes straight into JCP :) Where in
the crowd went completly off it's nut :) JCP ending with a feedback session
with a difference, Kim was having a great time, jumping up and down near the
amps mucking around with his guitar. Ben was watching him, notices something
on the ground, and walks over to the crowd and asks someone to come up on
stage. Some dude gets the moment of a life time as he climbs on stage, turns
to the crowd with his hands raised, a huge cheer errupts. Ben directs him to
near the amps and tells him to stand on something or other and hold it in
place. Someone from back stage gives this dude a beer, and in true tradition
he sculls the thing in one hit. Chris is hidden in the back with his guitar,
untill he walks out and kneels down to grab the mic, and start a feedback
drentched version of Nothing to Say. No drums or music really, just feedback
and vocals. Feedback was of course played musically :) Ending it all off
with a big scream as they left the stage :)

And that was the end.

More comments: The vocals in a few songs just couldn't be heard...that was
festival halls fault tho. Cause Chris's voice sounded fine to start
with...towards the end it sort of died and got a bit horse...but then if you
scream like that all the time :) Over all if was bloody awesome.

What have I missed..heaps and heaps and heaps...sorry about that but I can't
type it all up. Hope this was of some enjoyment and didn't just fill up
mailboxes :)

I got to go to bed...
