Hey List!

couple quick comments from the eighth floor...

1. Thuggy, you know what must be done.

2. Netscape 4.0b1 has been released...check it out :-)

3. Scariest Soundgarden song: I agree with the majority of the
posts..."Beyond the Wheel" hands down. But if you want maximum scarry
effect...listen to a live version during a thunderstorm with Chris
singing the words to "Hey Jude" thru a megaphone.

Some people on the list have been trading (or trying to) with me
recently, I was supposed to send someone a copy of a video bootleg, and
I was supposed to send someone else a Pearl Jam boot. Well..as I'm sure
you all know, I've had VERY bad luck lately..(if ya read my post about
getting pulled over and all that, dunno if you did cuz it lacked SG
content :D) Anyway just now I went to dub the video boot and it was
taping fine and all that, well guess what, suddenly it started taping on
the actual bootleg, so both copies ended up recording whatever what was
on TV at the time, I can't explain it because I'm the only one home and
I wasn't even in the room at the time..so I have a disappointed trader
and a ruined video boot :( And as for that Pearl Jam cd, I went to buy
it and it was gone (I figured it would be..I would have bought it in
advance except I am so broke right now it's amazing)..so I'm waiting to
hear back from these people to see if they would like me to send
something else before they call the whole thing off..like a dub of
something else..sigh.
Well, the basic idea of this post is that I can be trusted as a
trader, please dont think of me as a complete scumbag just because I
have had this bad luck lately..I also would like to apologize to those
two people..if I could have helped what happened, I would
have..but..sigh.
SG content? My copy of Reading is ruined..grr..oh, as'well. I
can live without it, I suppose..It's not like a CAR or anything. :D
Sorry for what happened, and sorry I can't contribute a whole lot
to the list lately, I've just been kinda stagnant in the Soundgarden
aspect of life :(

Things must be getting worse...

We went from "Half a chance, we still have half a chance" to "Zero chance
of ever turning this around."

And if Cash can cover SG, SG should cover Cash... imagine Cornell singing
the coolest lyric ever written: "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him
die."

Peace,
chris

Actually, I have alittle of this, but not the whole thing. I have Chris
bowling,
for a couple of minutes, and then him talking. If you are unable to get
it
from anyone else, then ask me. But I am telling you that mine isn't so
good

About 2 years ago, I got a boot called Pearl jam and a little
Soundgarden stolen. I remember this being a pretty good disc, but I may
be wrong. Does anyone have a copy of this that they are willing to sell,
trade, or tape for me? If someone would I would appreciate it.

I think Beyond The Wheel is defanitly one of Soundgardens scariest
songs. But I also think that Jerry Garcias Finger is also a little
wierdo. Even though it has no lycrics. But still, Beyond the Wheel is
scarier, maybe because of the beginning.

I know this thing has been run into the ground but something occured to me
today & I had to throw it out here.

I was listening to FDR & the song "Heretic" came on.

No one's mentioned it but, "Burn at the stake" etc. are some pretty intense
lyrics.

OK, I'll never mention scary songs again.

Subject: Some Observations

Well, thanks to the generosity of Toni, I just finished reading the book
"Soundgarden: New Metal Crown" by Chris Nickson. Now I have some comments,
observations, and questions after reading it. Yes, I actually took notes on
it. And now it's time for something unprecedented on SOMMS: a literary
discussion. :-) Sorry if some of you haven't read it; you should, at least
so you can rip on it.

1. The book mentions Kim's high school punk band, Zippy and His Vast Army
of Pinheads. Do we have any records or demos from them? I know we have
something from Identity Crisis, another one of Kim's punk bands, but what
about Zippy and Co.?

2. Chris mentions that, as a child, one of his favorite records was Alice
Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies." I suspect this is from where he took the
line in "Reach Down": "...crying louder than some billion dollar baby..."

3. Chris is quoted as saying, "Led Zeppelin is just a bunch of stupid
idiots who wrote cool riffs." I was surprised after reading that. Did he
really mean it, or was he just pissed off at the media's continual
comparison of Soundgarden to Led Zeppelin?

4. The author really dissed Alice in Chains, saying they were at first a
cheesy glam/metal band, then conveniently switched to the "grunge" style. I
didn't really agree with that statement, but anyways, it doesn't warrant
discussion on this list. Just an observation.

5. The author seemed to simply brush off "Louder Than Love" as a mistake.
That pissed me off because it's such a great album. He made it seem like
Soundgarden sold out by making a polished metal album, after a raw,
punk-like "Ultramega OK." "Louder than Love" is really meaningful for me
because it was the second Soundgarden album I heard, and it reminded me of
Badmotorfinger (my first album) with its power and heaviness. It made me go
out and get Superunknown.

6. Another thing that really pissed me off was that the author kept
stressing this metal thing over and over. It was like he wanted Soundgarden
to be a metal band so bad. I say, for God's sake, accept them as they are,
and drop the whole musical categorization thing. And he kept on talking
over and over about "The Big Thing" and "The Next Big Thing." Highly
irritating.

7. The book could've been improved if he talked more about the actual songs
and less about the touring. The touring discussion got boring. Also, the
book definitely needed more firsthand source material. Every quote was from
friends of the band or magazines. Then again, the book was unauthorized.

8. There were a few positives, though. I learned a lot of new facts about
Soundgarden. I learned that touring is a bitch and a half. Think about it,
going to Europe every other month, getting only a week off, going across
the damn country 3 times in a month. Craziness.

9. One thing worried me; I suddenly realized how old this band is. Kim is
36!! That's almost 40. Granted, Ben is still only 28, but still, those 40s
are fast approaching for Kim and Matt. I fear there may be only 2 more
albums from Soundgarden. But knowing Kim, he'll probably be playing until
he's in his 50s. The man is incredible. Really, who knows what they've got
left?

10. The book mentioned that Soundgarden jokingly says they based their
career on that of Spinal Tap. But when you think about it, it's eerily
true. In the movie "This is Spinal Tap," David St. Hubbins' girlfriend
Janine controls (or wants to) the band. Susan Silver does the same. Also,
both Spinal Tap and Soundgarden have had revolving lineups. At least
Soundgarden hasn't had anybody dying in bizarre gardening accidents or
choking on someone else's vomit. :-)

11. The book was okay. If you want to learn mostly facts about Soundgarden
like I did, it's a good book. If you want musical analysis and concrete
quotes from the band, don't read it. That's what we've got SOMMS for.

12. And to close, a quote from Kim that I find absolutely hilarious.

"We didn't write hits. We didn't write songs for housewives to vacuum to,
and for little fourteen-year-old girls to diddle themselves to while
looking at your picture! It just wasn't party music, it wasn't for simple
people; simple people buy the Top 40 hits."

What can I say? Klassic Kim.

Vasant

PS - Is it just me, or is the average age on this list getting smaller
every day? Not that that's bad or anything. Umm, it just makes it more, uh,
interesting. And it's easier to rip on newbies too. Ah, Michael Apple, we
hardly knew ye.
