I saw a while back in a newsgroup (I know, not the most reliable source)
that Mad Season was releasing a double cd album with rumored appearances by
Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil. I didn't think anything of it at the time,
but now it appears that Mad Season is releasing a double album. Layne
Staley only does vocals on one disc, and somebody else on the other. Maybe
the second disc is where CC makes his guest appearance??? Does anybody
have any more information about the new Mad Season release or about
Soundgarden working with them recently??

Subject: what i saw today

Hey ya,

I am a happy little camper today :) After a week on Fraser Island, the
details of which i will not bore you but to say: Sand, surf and sun :)

And TODAY: Walking around the shops, I run into a copy of Room a .....
wide/HIV BABY on purple marble vinyl :) woohooo that sub pop singles club :)
Gee it looks good in my collection. HIV baby is a groovy enough song too,
have to listen to it a few more times yet to get the feeling for it. What
price is this going for over in the US? I got it for $15, too expensive?

I also saw the tour pack DOTU 2cd thing. It is very nice package, I like the
side of the case with upside down writting saying: Down under the upside. I
might buy it just for that. Bummer that I already have all the songs on the
Ep. But for others getting it, it looks great :)

Saw a Green River cd, what was it.... Come on over? is that the name?
thought about buying it but my budget was way out by this stage. Also say
another early edition SG 7" (I am sorry I forgot the name)

And in Australia's biggest poll (300000 votes) Soundgarden came in at #77
with Burden in my hand. Winner was Spiderbait so I can't complain with that :)

and why am i saying all this....well I am finally back from all my holidays
so I can read and post once again :) woohoo catch up time on all the digests.

PS: to all the ppl going to the BDO lucky bastards...I'll see you wednesday
night! Soundgarden in my hometown once again :) :)

A little over a year ago, i told someone that Soundgarden was my favorite
band. He said that there was no weak link in the band, and i was like,
yeah, i know this...and then last night i see another band with no weak
link: five eight. They rock! Go see them if you get a chance.

On the more related tip, Beyond the wheel is pretty scary, but it just
doesn't instill fear in me like Cold Bitch does. I'll play the riff from
cold bitch on my guitar and then try to hide from my amp because i think
it's gonna get me. :) laters. -j

That's so these "real" fans can put you in your bandwagon box where you

Their first question posed to you is usually, "So, how long have you been
listening to the band?" If your answer is, oh, 5 years or less, you're

um, well i read somewhere that B.u.t.o.w video was being likened to
Clockwork Orange simply because it was banned (like clockwork orange was).
But I haven't seen the clip yet (sorry). Although i have seen clockwork

I had also heard some news about this but I wasn't sure if it was true.
I had heard that Mark Lanegan(of Screaming Trees fame) was going to be
singing on the other disc. I never heard about Soundgarden being on it but
that would be something.

Ok, a few people have asked about the butow video and how it relates to a
Clockwork Orange. The video and the movie are similar in that in both,
the main character is stapped into a chair and forced to watch movies. I
would not say that one is based on the other. Inspired would be a better
word. And I'm not sure that either of them were banned, though I was not
born when CO was released. A clockwork orange is an excellent movie, BTW.

What, are you trying to insult the list or what? I know what you are
talking about with regards to the attitude to newer fans. But I'll tell
you that I have not seen this from anyone who has been on the list longer
than 4 months. You don't think we've had this thread before? Let me tell
you...We've had this thread so many times...To the older fans: there is
nothing wrong with someone discovering SG recently. Get out of your
egocentric little world. And to the newer fans: Don't barge into out
community asking stupid questions. There is a mammoth resource on the
World Wide Web called the Unofficial Soundgarden Hompeage, which is run by
the same individual who runs the list, Seth. You will NOT find a larger
or more comprehensive source of SG info in the WORLD. No exaggeration.
There's material there the band probably doesn't know about/remember.
There is a massive discography which includes authorized and unauthorized
releases, info on all major and rare releases, more articles than you
could imagine, fabulous video, pictures, FAQ, band history, tablature.
Did I mention video? The point is, do your homework before coming to the
list with 50 questions.

to quote Mike McCready himself, "it's all myth". EVERYTHING, but
EVERYTHING, you have heard about any forthcoming mad season release is
rumor. there has allegedly been music recorded, and the two vocalists are
*rumored* to be Mark Lanegan and Layne Staley, not chris cornell.

says who???? certainly not me. certainly not most of the people i know on
this list. i know there are people who do act as though they are almighty
information god of soundgarden knowledge and if you don't know everythign
they do, or can't quote the songs that they do, you are worthless.

and i'd hate to tell them that 9 times out of 10 i can't quote the song
they're talking about, i didn't get to see SG until 1994 (well, they didn't
come to where I was living at the time) and i don't like LTL and only had
screaming life on tape until last year. so by their standards, hell -- i'm
not a "real" soundgarden fan either.

it ain't the size of your record collection, or the amount of trivia you
know -- it's the sincerity -- I don't care how old you are or how long

OK, I have to agree that from a *sound & aura* perspective Beyond the Wheel
is probably as "scary" as it gets. (Although none of SG's music scares me in
the Biblical sense (c: )

From a lyrical point of view & sound, I think 4th of July is far and away the
"scariest". (Is it just me or is "scary" not exactly the right word: Ominous
or something seems more fittng).

OK you guys are gonna think I've lost it on this one but what the hell,
sanity is over-rated. I think from the perspective of "There but for the
grace of God go I"- scariness, I think "Zero Chance" is a horrificly
frightening song. I mean the line "Born without a friend & Bound to die
alone" is a pretty scary line. The entire song is beautiful (& my personal
favorite on DOTU) vivid, & powerful, but the theme of things are fucked up &
there's no getting around it is frightening. Maybe cause it reflects the real
world more than we'd like to admit.

BUT hey: As long as I have SOMMSters around me, I'll never die alone!
Whether or not I have any friends is still up for debate (c; .

Is all this Bullshit?

Probably, it is coming from me afterall.

intro to "Searching With My Good Eye Closed". You know, "The Devil
says..."

Howzabout the scariest album? I have a hard time deciding between UMOK
and BMF. I think there are scary and non-scary songs on both. If you
could combine all the scariest songs, you could call it
UltraMegaMotorFinger. And that--would petrify me!! Combine the non-scary
songs and you could call it OKBad.

Speaking of scares, and my apologies in advance for not posting to the
drive-by mailing list, Thursday night at 12:30am, some dick ass CB
jerks, out to shut up my CB talking neighbor accross the street, mistook
my house for his and decided to unload their .22's into my living room.
Fortunately, the bullets only went through one wall and didn't get my
wife and I as we slept in the bedroom. They tore up our stuff in the
living room pretty good though. And we had just re-arranged the
furniture that day! All because those speed-freak shit-talking CB heads
don't have anything better to do that hassle each other and start
fights! Sorry again, but I feel better.

Later.

Subject: Introducing...The Soundgarden Songbook

Hey there SOMMSters. I'd like to let all you guys know about the new
Soundgarden Songbook. This is a set of all Soundgarden lyrics in one file
that's easy for downloading.
The reason I made this is because I thought it'd be nice to have all the
lyrics to the songs in one compact file that you can print out, if you
wish. The lyrics will still be there on the unofficial site. The songbook
is just an added convenience.
I asked Seth what he thought about the idea, and he said ok, so I went with
it. Basically, what I did was try to make corrections and make the lyrics
more complete.
The URL is:

http://ctdnet.acns.nwu.edu/~vman/sgsongbook.html

There, you can download it in zipped or binhexed form, depending on what
computer you use. It's just a simple text file. There will be an HTML
version soon, so you can view it right on screen.
I'm guessing it should look the same on all computers, but if there's any
problems, lemme know.

Remember, this songbook is for all of us on SOMMS. We're the ones who
contributed the lyrics in the first place, so we should help to keep them
updated and corrected. So please give me help, feedback, etc, so I can make
it better for all of us to use.

Thanks,

Vasant

I know about Chris's five siblings, and about Ben's little brother (by
the way, does anyone know if he's single?), but do Matt or Kim have and
brothers or sisters? I'm an only child, and I'm begining to feel I'm a bit of
a rare occurrence (I did spell that right, didn't I?).
Also, I was channel-surfing the other day and came across and episode of
Singled Out. Just as I was about to change the channel, the three guys
(trying to win a date with the girl in the chair) were asked the question the
girl answered before the show - "What would you rather plant - Screaming
Trees, or Soundgarden?" Two of the guys said Soundgarden, and the third said
Screaming Trees. The girl, it turned out, had said Soundgarden, as well. OK,
so maybe it isn't as big as something like - Matt announcing a proposal to
his live-in girlfriend would be, but I have next to no life and little things
excite me. ;)

Found this in ATN today. It's from their Daily News (Jan. 18th) feature. The
person who wrote this doesn't really go into SG that much; she mainly
mentions Aust. bands, but here it is anyway:
In the previous paragraph she describes some minor problems the Offspring
had (sound system not loud enough etc)...

"Soundgarden had no such problem. This is a band that was
born to play to huge crowds. Singer Chris Cornell was in
excellent voice; his growl reached every corner of the
stadium. Highlights included a solo spot from Cornell
performing "Black Hole Sun" plus full band workouts of
"Outshined," "Rusty Cage" (dedicated to Johnny Cash) and
Iggy Pop's proto-punk classic, "Search And Destroy."

Not much, I know, but I''m sure we'll be hearing more detailed reviews from
our fellow sommsters in NZ and Australia :)

Hey, I just recently joined SOMMS, this is my first post. Actually, I

something...oh well, this stuff is new to me and we all make
mistakes. I just hope this one finds it's intended destination. Anyway, =

I guess I mainly want to say hey to everybody out there and
introduce myself. I'm Lorraine, age 17, from PA. SG's been my
favorite band for a little over two and a half years now.

I also have 2 important things to ask. First of all, I have all SG's
albums, but am severely lacking when it comes to singles, bootlegs.
Can anyone tell me what's the best way -- i.e. cheapest, easiest --
way to get these? Second... a friend and I have been arguing over
one of the lines in BUTOW (my favorite song). It's listed as saying
"So save it for your own and the ones you can *help.*" Since I first
heard the song, last spring when I bought DOTU, I've always
thought it was "So save it for your own and the ones you can *kill.*"
My friend says I'm wrong. I say if you listen closely you'll hear it. I'd=

like to hear everyone elses' opinions on the matter, because if it is
"help" and not "kill," that would invalidate my interpretation of the
song. But I'm certain it is "kill."

Well, that's 'bout it for now. Thanx.

Well my month is over and I'm back. It was a month filled with emotions
highs and lows but I'm happy to be back talking with the SOMMs membership.
And that includes all members. Not just the old timers but all you
newbies. A long time ago we had a discussing on what is a SG fan and I
said and I still say: If you hear SG for the first time today and you get
that wonderful gut feeling you're a fan. Being a fan has nothing to do
with the length of time you have know a band or the amount of information
you know. It's that feeling you get when you hear their music or spending
your last few $$$ on a rare CD by them instead of buying your lunch for the
next few days.

I'm one of the oldest members of this list but that doesn't make me a
better fan than someone who just discovered SG. So welcome to all new
members and fans come on in the water is fine!!!!!

And speaking of finds, I found a promotions only single of Johnny Cash's
"Rusty Cage". It's has Cash's version and then track two is Soundgarden's
version. Believe it or not I really like Cash's version it makes me smile
each time I hear it. I liked the idea of an another artist doing a
completely different style of music to one of SG songs. It makes me wonder
what other songs of SG could be done by other (different musical styles
like country) artist...

I guess this is a pretty sensitive issue among the Sommsters. In my opinion,
I think it's great that Soundgarden have been nominated for a Grammy. And
that doesn't mean that they've "sold out" or have "commercialized"
themselves. SG has been nominated for Grammies before. And whether they win
or don't win, it really doesn't matter. What matters is that Soundgarden has
many, many true fans out there... and *that's* what counts.

OK, I'm gettin a little pissed off. On 1/18/97 an unknown person wrote that
if you have been listening to SG for 5 years or less, you are worthless. This
really makes me mad. If it weren't for the people that have become new fans
of SG in the past 5 years, they would still be a relatively unknown band
lurking in the shadows. I am sure that SG is greatly thankful for the new
fans who have helped make them so popular. And if you are implying that the
new people aren't as good of fans as you are, then thats bullshit too. My
first SG album was Badmotorfinger and nobody can accuse me of being an
inferior fan. Some of these "new" fans never had access to even hear SG music
until Badmotorfinger, like me. I have no problem with a person who has been a
SG fan since the very beginning and are proud of it. But when that person
starts to think that they are automatically a better fan than the "newbies",
then they are wrong.

wednesday night.

the setlist (and I came *this* close to getting one) reads:

jan. 19, 1994; big day out; gold coast parklands.

	spoonman
	swmgec
	let me drown
	pretty noose
	my wave
	fell on black days
	ty cobb
	black hole sun
	search and destroy (?)
	rusty cage
	butow
	slaves and bulldozers
	encore - jesus christ pose.

the list doesn't look entirely different to most of their lolla
shows, which was a little disappointing. but I'm sure that they will
change it up a bit when they play their headlining show here. the music
was good, perhaps not as good as when I first saw them in 94, but good
nonetheless. there were a couple of little hitches, such as ben leaving
the stage during fobd due to technical difficulties, and chris' voice was
(as seems usual) shaky for a goodly portion of pretty noose. but the
crowd interaction was cool (kim decided this time *not* to chug, but
merely to sip and then pour the remainder on stage), and all the musical
elements were pretty much perfect for the majority of the show.

Subject: SiCA website! (Soundgarden Snob Central)

Well kiddies... I've finally finished the freaking website.
Sethmeister... I *really* have a new admiration for what you've done with
the unofficial site. The SiCA page was one of the biggest pains I've ever
had (well, except for my CAR BREAKING DOWN on a FRIDAY NIGHT)... but as they
say (whoever in the hell "they" are), it was a labor of love. Don't expect
anything fancy, kiddies. The major differences are that the links are now
clickable pictures (ohhhhh), there's different pages for different links
(ooooooh), and I've added a guest book and counter (ahhhhhhh). Plus some
more smart-ass comments, a thank you page... and a BRAND NEW picture of Dena
(aka Geek Girl, aka Blessed SOMMS Goddess, aka crazy shirt/hat making woman).
The picture of Dena is from a *very* late night ice cream sundae and whipped
cream expedition that her, Vikki, Ryan and I had one evening while we were in
Seattle last October. Is she drunk in it? Mmmmmmmaybe? Mmmmmaybe not. ;-)
Anyway... update your bookmarks, kiddies... 'cause I changed the URL, too.
If you try to access the old one, I put up a little message directing you to
the right spot. Oh... and *please* sign the damned guestbook. I really
didn't care if we had one or not, but my mistress Dena commanded me to put it
up. Ummm... she's gonna smack me for saying that. ;-) Anyway... MORE
PICTURES OF CHRIS... and I'll hopefully have a few new surprises in the next
couple of weeks. I haven't updated the Chris Cornell is God site yet,
though. But give me a couple of days before sending me life-threatening
e-mail, ok? Thank yew, and good night.

Here's what the critics have said about the new and improved SiCA site:

"It was the most intellectually stimulating experience I've ever had in my
life. I am now smarter for having checked it out." ~ Kim Thayil
"I don't know how to turn a computer on, so I kicked the monitor until it
shattered... and then I spat all over the fucking thing." ~ Ben Shepherd
"Oh, such pretty pretty pictures..." ~ Matt Cameron
"....and I've already written 3 songs about the SiCA site since I first
checked it out this afternoon! It's going to be a source of never-ending
inspiration to me, I can tell already. I'm going to recommend it to all of
my fellow rock stars. I also found it highly erotic, and I'm looking forward
to meeting it's creator, Shroom Girl. I feel the need to get down on my
KNEES and thank her for the mentally masturbatory qualities that she has
implemented into the site... and all in my honor. It's the greatest
compliment I've ever received...." ~ Chris Cornell

Subject: soundgarden at the BDO...

What better to force me out of hibernation than an awesome weekend of
music culminating with Soundgarden on stage 1 at the gold coast Big Day
Out.

After sitting through ten hours of non-stop music in the hot sun, the
visually challenged dog and I were getting pretty excited as Offspring
wound up their (truly awful-buttrockish) set and we took up position in
the front center of the main stage
to await SG. Our patience had already been worn thin by an hour of the
Prodigy but these are the sacrifices we must make :)

I don't know how many people Lollapalooza attracted, but there would have
been between 25 and 30 thousand people crammed onto the one sporting oval
and surrounds which made for a pretty intense and atmospheric experience,
and when the boys took the stage behind a triumphant looking Chris the
whole crowd erupted into a body-crushing, screaming mass. They opened with
a ripping version of Spoonman which we were really getting into until the
wave of bodies started crushing us towards the back..we decided to go with
the flow which took us back to the middle of the crowd and behind a bunch
of woo-girls sitting on peoples shoulders.

The boys worked through SWMGEC and Let me Drown, as Justin and I struggled
for
a better position. Not bad, but seeming more and more like standard fare
after hearing them live so much. Being back further was a factor because
the atmosphere was not so good amongst all the Prodigy fans :)
One guy I was next to had decided that the song was called 'Let me Go' and
was singing it at the top of his voice. After copping a few boots in the
head up the front we were a bit wary of trying to get back there.
I was more keen
than justin being unencumbered while he carried the camera and bag full of
our stuff :) So we decided to split up and meet after the show.

Chris' voice was a little problematic during the next song; Pretty Noose,
(not helped by a bit of distortion from his mic), it was a bit
disappointing really, just a mess of guitar sounds.
From then on however the show was awesome. They played My Wave and FOBD
which always go down well with me and then Ty Cobb which is infinitly
better live than an the record. By this stage I was almost right up the
front which had calmed down quite considerably. Chris then leant into his
trademark solo version of Black Hole Sun. Here again his voice sounded a
bit thin, but the crowd helped him out a fair bit and he showed no signs
of trouble as he launched into the rest of the set.

The last few songs were certainly the best, starting with a cover that we
are tentatively saying was 'Search and Destroy'. This was followed by
perhaps the best live performance of Rusty Cage I have heard. They just
went through it full throttle with Kim variously playing the guitar with
his chest, his beard and his forearm, creating a sort of distorted backing
to Chris and Ben. Matt was amazing (as he was for the whole show). They
finished with BUTOW and the always awesome ending; Slaves and Bulldozers.
This being the final BDO Chris signed off by saying "See you at the next
Big Day Out.......in hell", which was kind of cool. He didn't talk to the
crowd an awful lot but seemed happy and pumped up to be playing to
such a packed arena. Some of the previous acts, notably You Am I were a
little bit pissed about stuff being thrown from the crowd, but thankfully
this was at a minimum for SG.

Anyway some of the interloping fans of other bands started to leave, but
the diehards up the front pressed for the good old encore :) It didn't
take long before we were treated to JCP, with the beautiful drum intro by
Matt. Truly a crowd pleaser which ended the night on a real high. Matt
chucked five drumsticks into the crowd, which all unfortunately landed
about 10 metres away from me. Not dishearted I stayed up the front to try
and coax something out of the security guards (who were the stereotypical
assholes they always are). I thought my luck was out when I had one hand
on the setlist only to have it ripped off me, but my wait was rewarded
when Kim's guitar tech threw a pick off the stage. It landed in between
the crowd and the stage and the guys next to me didn't spot it so I asked
the security guy to get it for me. After threatening to throw it into the
crowd he finally responded to my pleading and let me have it. That was
pretty cool because it looked like we would have nothing from the show
because they kept the whole ticket. We eventually found, and halved,
one lousy ticket stub. Pretty pathetic really :)

All in all it was a great show. Justin didn't seem quite as high on it as
I was but it was quite a different atmosphere where he was. For all the Oz
listers, The Superjesus were awesome and You AM I and Powderfinger were
good. The other headliners as I alluded to were pretty bad. The Offspring
got a guy and a girl out of the crowd and had them lick honey of each
other which was pretty bad...buttrock central.

Anyway, Soundgarden made it all worthwhile, and better still we get to
see them again in two days time for a full length show. Australia really
is the lucky country :) Hell we even get TOOL in April, it's shaping up
for a good year.

compilation was done by the drummer in Redd Kross. okay that's all I have now
