c'mon up to seattle and i'll be happy to show you a few. 10, 15 years ago
it was a big deal and when i used to go to beatlefests they were the hot
items. not any more.

>Please! The only reason why the price of this Promo is so high is because
>A&M releases it it limited supply, for radio only, then says "Please don't
>sell this disc<wink, nudge>!".

that means, don't sell it. that many people who work in radio are greedy
bastards who insist on being serviced doubles and triples doesn't justify
it. i know, because i've had to deal with these whiners calling me and
complaining why their station only got one copy of a rare item (that's meant
for the station library so ALL of them can play it).

>What does that do? Drives people to spend
>large amounts of money which raises the fan hysteria which increases the fan

which is why i wouldn't pay $80 for SOMMS, why i support collectible dealers
who charge *reasonable* amounts of money. if we all did that the prices
would go down.

>So who's the real fan: the
>person who buys it at cost and sells it at cost OR the person who pays little
>and sells for a lot.

is this a rhetorical question??? i don't think it's a matter of who's the
real fan, though i'd like to think that a fan wouldn't screw another fan
because they're both coming from the same place. the guy who sold me a who
ticket when i was 15 and desparately trying to scalp a ticket for the first
time, tickets going for $100 minimum, me with $25 worth of babysitting money
in my pocket. he sold it to me at cost after giving me a pop trivia quiz
and told me to remember this the next time i had an extra. cut to 10 years
later when i'd get a plus one on guest lists (before it was illegal to sell
your extras) and i'd go find the person who looked like they'd die if they
didn't get in and GIVE it to them. or the ten year old kid at marcus
ampitheatre in milwaukee in 1995 to whom i sold a pearl jam ticket at cost
- -- he'd never seen them before and it was his first concert. i flew out
there from seattle and trust me it wasn't cheap, nor am i rich. but it goes
against every bone in my body to take advantage of someone like that,
especially a fellow fan.

this is why i also scour used record stores to see if there's a mispriced
SOMMS, why i buy extra pearl jam items when they're cheap to pass along to
other fans, why i will never ever ever scalp a ticket.

>It's moot because in the end, you're both just part of

been there, done that. spent 10 years at it, and promotional singles are to
create interest in a very very jaded media. that some weasel takes a few
boxes down to the record store to sell at $10 a pop something stamped
"PROMOTIONAL - NOT FOR SALE" is not why the singles get planned, not why
they exist, and is not what is supposed to happen. that it does probably
can't be prevented, but that doesn't justify it, or you. i'm sorry.

> I'd just rather be a paid pawn than just a pawn . As Ani DiFranco said

and if you were working for righteous babe and she caught you selling a
promotional single for an outrageous sum of money, she'd claw your fucking
eyes out. and if you want a quote, try this: "no i don't prefer
obscurity/but i'm an idealistic girl/and i wouldnt work for you no matter
what you paid/i may not be able to change the whole fucking world/but i can

Dammit! I was going to watch M2 for the first time today too. I haven't seen

Okay, this song is recent, but I think Applebite is pretty freaky. I said
before that it reminds me of music from a blaxploitation film. I guess it
could be the background sound for dark and sinister movies as well. Chris
might as well be a goth perfoming that song(it's always forever...)! Another
'dark' song would be Fourth of July.

Well, yeah, its perfectly legal here. Why wouldnt it be? (just
kidding) Unfortunately, when I sent the pic to Amanda, she couldnt
open it. Maybe Matt is somehow sabotaging my efforts to make him into
the porn star that he deserves to be. Hey, he shouldnt mind. He posed
for the picture! Actually, its not nearly as risque as some of those
Calvin Klein ads.

Hey, thats just another reason why the unofficial web site is more
popular than the official one! Maybe I need to send this pic to Seth
and ask him if he will put on the home page so everyone who is
interested can look at it. Seriously, Ive had a lot of requests for it
and not everyone can download it.

Yes, thats exactly what I figured! She wants to surprise her mom!
OK, Ill stop with the SG porn stuff.

> i have an idea for a thread. let's hear everybody's scariest soundgarden

To me, Mailman is one of their scariest songs. It brings on images of
stalkers and serial killers (yes, Ive seen way too many horror movies
and read way too many horror books). When Chris sings the line Im
riding you all the way, it gives me chills (unless I think about Chris
and then its not scary, but something entirely different--oops, there I
go again, sorry). Well, the title is what really gives me the
creeps--what could be more frightening than postal workers--particularly
in Oklahoma?! Much of Soundgarden's music sounds scary to me--4th of
July, Slaves & Bulldozers, Nazi Driver--the list could go on and on...

i'm not so sure thay aren't going maybe a little.
OK, lets face the fact that they've surely made as much money as they're
ever gonna want so they don't have to play to any commercial demands.
But listening to DOtU i think the band has progressed to a more
commercially acceptable musical stance from Superunknown. (or maybe the
world just changed around them ?? :) ).
But there is distinctly less strange timing and experimentation with
strange guitar tunings thatn there was on Superunknown.

Granted the music is still pretty strange tho'. Actually it seems more to
me that Superunknown was actually pushed by Soundgarden to be very strange
and alternative, because it really doesn't seem to fit all that
well between Badmotorfinger and DOtU.

Thats jsut *my* opinion though.

Subject: Into the Void (Sealth)

I have a copy of the Northwest indian chief's (Sealth) speech that Chris
used to create new lyrics to SG's cover of Into the Void. I edited the
speech into one paragraph and put the applicable sentences in all caps.
I also put the final CC lyrics into a paragraph format. If you weren't
already astounded by CC's writing ability, read on and compare the
original speech to what CC came up with. -Vikki :)

THE SPEECH (EDITED)
The Great Chief of Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land.
...we will consider your offer. For we know that if we do not sell, the
white man may come with guns and take our land. THE IDEA IS STRANGE TO
US. IF WE DO NOT OWN THE FRESHNESS OF THE AIR AND THE SPRINKLE OF THE
WATER, HOW CAN YOU BUY THEM?... WE KNOW THAT THE WHITE MAN DOES NOT
UNDERSTAND OUR WAYS... FOR HE IS A STRANGER WHO COMES IN THE NIGHT AND
TAKES FROM THE LAND WHATEVER HE NEEDS. THE EARTH IS NOT HIS BROTHER BUT
HIS ENEMY AND WHEN HE HAS CONQUERED IT, HE MOVES ON, HE LEAVES HIS
FATHER'S GRAVE BEHIND AND DOES NOT CARE... Even the white man, whose god
walks and talks with him as friend to friend cannot be exempt from the
common destiny. We may be brothers after all, we shall see. ONE THING WE
KNOW WHICH THE WHITE MAN MAY DISCOVER -- OUR GOD IS THE SAME GOD. The
whites too shall pass, perhaps sooner than all other tribes. CONTINUE TO
CONTAMINATE YOUR BED AND YOU WILL SOON SUFFOCATE IN YOUR OWN WASTE...
And what is it to say goodbye to the swift pony and the hunt? The end of
living and the beginning of survival...
- ---------------
INTO THE VOID (SEALTH), lyrical arrangement and additions by CC
How can you buy or sell the sky, or the warmth of the land, it's strange
to us. We don't own the freshness of the air or the sparkle of the water.
How can you buy them from us? The white man doesn't understand our ways,
for he's a stranger who comes in the night and takes from the land just
what he needs. He treats his brothers like his enemies. When it's
completed he moves on. He leaves his father's grave and his birthright --
his birthright is forgotten. The air is precious to the red man, for all
things share the same breath. The white man won't notice the air he
breathes like a man dying for many days. The whites must treat the beasts
of his land as his brothers, not his enemies. Tell me what is man without
the beasts. I'll bet he will die of loneliness. One thing we know that
the white man will -- we know our god is the same god. You may think you
wish to own him, own him as you wish to own our land, but he is the body
of man and the earth is precious to him. Continue to contaminate your bed
and you will suffocate in your waste.

The scariest Soundgarden songs would be:

1) Applebite - everytime I hear this song I picture SG playing in some empty
school auditorium with the spotlight directly on them, and a depressed as
hell look on their faces...like they are being forced to play it as some
kind of punishment. Not exactly a song I would want to listen to at 4 in
the morning.

2) Blind Dogs - Great brooding, slightly scary song..kinda makes you want
to go out when it is Halloween and tear shit up and not think about it.

3) Boot camp - 'nuff said.

4) Pretty Noose (The Saturday Night Live Version) - hey it frightened the

Good Point. However, I still think it's mostly commercial, but, like

Maui on February 8 and Oahu on February 9. Tickets allegedly go on
sale tomorrow (Friday, January 17).

Can anyone confirm this?

what's interesting is when these first came out, the prices i saw
consistently out here were in the $45-50 range, and every time i picked
one up the dealer would really try to sell me on the rareness of it.

then it pretty much dropped to $40, and now I have seen them in the
$30-$25 range, which is far more reasonable imo. it's not all that
exciting of an item after all....

I just thought I would let everybody out there know that I just got the new
Soundgarden video from mosh video. I heard about it from a
few of you other SOMMers out there so I figured what the heck. All I
have to say is, if you don't have this video "GET IT NOW". The video was
awsome. It had live clips and videos on it. Excellent quality. I have never
seen the music videos of "Superunknow" and "The Day I Tried To Live" but now I
have. Thanks mosh. It has all the videos that Soundagrden has released from
Badmotorfinger and Down On The Up Side. It also has a cool interview with the
band from an episode of Haggin' w/ MTV. I was totaly impressed with this video.
The great thing was that I got the video in less than a week. I sent out my
check on a Monday and then I got the video on Saturday. That is fast. I usualy
don't brag about stuff on the digest like this, but I thought that this was
something too cool not to discuss. If anybody is interested, mosh's E-mail
address is: mosh@fones.cals.lib.ar.us

Bye,

P.S. He also has a bunch of other really great videos for sale.

Subject: RE: my take on the grammies

Dave-
I have to agree with you and Caryn on this whole Grammy thing. I know people
who are voting members of NARAS and they are BUSINESSMEN. They vote for
things that will make them and their cronies more money. This is not to say
that all voting members fit this profile, just the ones I happen to know.
They wouldn't know a talented musician if he or she came up and spit in their
face. The Grammies have virtually nothing to do with the new and interesting
and fantastic things that happen in music every year. They are about being
able to put a little sticker on Celine Dion's latest CD that says "Grammy
Nominated" or "Grammy Winner" and having that and all the other
nominees/winners on the "Grammy Wall" at the front of Sam Goody so all the
people who don't know what to buy their niece for her birthday will pick it
up because it must be *good and safe* if it's nominated for a Grammy.

The only real benefit, iho, is that it allows artists exposure to audiences
that they might not otherwise reach. But unless they're actually playing at
the ceremony this exposure is very minimal. True, an award is an award and
one shouldn't look a gifthorse in the mouth and all that crap but I don't
think Soundgarden gets their validation from this kind of industry
back-patting anyway. Whatever their feelings are about the nomination and the
awards they've already received, we all know that they're a group of
intelligent men with a very business savvy manager and I'm sure that they all
fully understand what the Grammies mean and do not mean.

very true. just because they were nominated doesn't mean that anyone is
going to necessarily go in the record store the next day and ask for it
(there are stats on this every year, on the pre-grammy vs. post-grammy
sales, i'll be sure to post them as they relate to sg).

my favorite story is when the rollins band was asked to play the grammies
- -- rollins tells this hilarious story about everything they went through,
and how he spent the rehersals practicing blowing kisses to bruce
springsteen's mom (they have the seating chart in the audience so that the
camerapeople can practice getting 'candid' shots of audience members).

and whatever their reason for going or not going is their business, how
they choose to react or not react is their business. if they go -- great,
we get to make jokes and ogle chris/matt/ben/kim if you're a hootchie. ;-)
if they don't -- whatever. their choice. i don't think any more or less
out of them *either* way.

'commercial' is about as stupid a word these days as 'alternative' is.
soundgarden are commercial. commercial doesn't mean 'selling out', to me
it means a band with international recognition and a major label deal who
are widely exposed. that's the whole reason people join bands in the first
place (besides making music -- but if they didn't want as manh people as
possible to hear it they would just stay home and make tapes for
themselves) and i personally don't see what's wrong with it. more power

me and filling the room. I was under the assumption that this list was
controlled by a certian friend of ours at MIT. No no no no no, it's time we
faced the facts, the list has been taken over by satan and his soundgarden
people. THE HOOTCHIES ARE LOOSE!! AND THEY'RE ALL ON THIS LIST!! PLANNING,
WAITING FOR THE DAY!! And on that day I'll be glad I'm not in a certian band
in the upper western area of the nation. It might be good, if your in that
area, to start a whip and leather shop now.... then you'll be ready for the
onslaught. I wonder who we owe this sudden arousal and coming out of the closet
too, hmmmmmmm? Whoever would set that kind of an example? (Wink in the general

escape route, because hootchies are mobile, they like to take road trips, and i
can about guess where stop number two would be. :)
Ok, there is a bit of seriousness in this post and for all of you who
find it impossibly hard to be serious, i won't be offended if you skip to the
end. :( Two days ago i took a class trip to a Pumpkins concert and when we
got back we had a pretty good talk about it and a large percentage of the class
didn't like it. They're reasoning was that there wasn't enough of a show (ie.
lights, lasers, smoke, that kind of stuff) and the words were hard to decipher.
I personally think that the kind of show they did put on was better, keeping
the focus on the music. What do you think?
The problem was the seating, that's exactly what it was. I'd seen them
on this tour a couple months ago and was ready for it, but in turn wasn't as

just out of interest, this year's big day out (the last of it's
kind) has recently sold out, making it the largest bdo ever in this state.
the first show of the festival's tour is in southport, queensland, and
will attract around 40 000 people (or so I am told). I'll be one of those
40 000 <grinning>. backstage access to stage number 1 (soundgarden's)
will be impossible to wrangle, considering that bands not playing on the
main stage itself can't get access no matter how much they plead and
cajole :) perhaps things will be less strict for their show here three
days later...

I just had a quick look at the official bdo page, and they are
advertising online chats with musicians appearing at the melbourne and
perth shows. perhaps one of our guys will be involved? there are email
contact adresses listed, but they probably don't have a firm schedule set
yet, so it would probably be pointless asking.

also of note is the guests-only you am I show which is scheduled
for this tuesday night here in brisbane. there is a small chance that I
could get in with some friends, and there is a smaller chance still that a
certain group of four men may make it to the show...

food or thought: the possibility of members of both soundgarden
and you am I appearing onstage together *three* times in one week. now
**that** would be worth the price of admission :)
