Kathie,

This is awesome! I had never really thought about the song this way
but being the mother of a 5 month old boy Wow! does it fit! I
suppose I had sort of related it to any new or foreign experience but
never specifically thought of it in terms of being a parent. The term
Alive in the Superunknown I had always thought of as something I would
want written on my tombstone. Obviously relating it to death is kind
of morbid but what an upbeat way to think about the "afterlife"
whatever it may hold. Keep interpreting everyone, I think this is
very interesting!

Subject: Personal Interpretations

I've really enjoyed reading people's personal interpretations of
songs.
In fact I had been thinking of offering that thread because I have a
few
of my own. Let me start with SuperUnknown. Every time I hear this song
it
makes me think about the experience of being a parent. I have two
kids, 4
and 2 years old, and since they were born I've often felt like I have
embarked on a journey into the great unknown - and the song seems to
really describe how I feel. And bear with me. I'm well aware that
these
lines have deeper meanings than what I'm giving them, but we're
talking
"personal" interpretations here. Let me go verse by verse:

"If this isn't what you see
It doesn't make you blind"

As a parent things aren't always as they appear to be. Sometimes you
can't figure out what's going on, medically or emotionally or
behaviorally, but it doesn't mean you're
 blind, or stupid.

"If this doesn't make you feel
It doesn't mean you've died"

I love this line. When you are exhausted and overwhelmed sometime you
feel like you must be dead, you feel kind of numb, but you have to go
on.
I picture myself sitting like a lump during a particularly wild day,
watching my kids (both boys I forgot to say) going nuts, thinking "I
am
so tired, this doesn't even bother me".

"Where the river's high" For me this means high emotion, being on the
edge.

"If you don't want to be seen (wishing I could hide from the kids, get
some privacy)
You don't have to hide (No, I just have to get my time some other
way)
If you don't want to believe (I can't believe he did that! I can't
believe *I* did that!)
You don't have to try
To feel alive."

Of all the joys of having children, feeling more alive is my favorite.
I
don't have to "try"
to feel alive. Just watching and being with my kids makes me feel
alive.

"Alive in the Superunknown"

Perfect description of the whole parenting experience. I don't know if
it
ever gets less unnerving, if I'll ever feel like an expert, but right
now
every day is an adventure. Even after the second was born, and I
thought
I knew all about babies, his personality was so different that it was
like starting all over. Now, this isn't a bad thing. It sure makes
life
exciting. I definitely see this as a positive song.

"First it steals your mind"

For me describes the first few months with a new baby, feeling nuts.

"And then it steals your soul"

This is when I fall head over heels in love with the child and they
have
my soul forever.

You get the idea (I hope) so I'm going to skip the next "If this
doesn't,
it doesn't mean" part since the ideas are similar, just the
ambiguities
of dealing with life and small children.

I love this next part:

"Get yourself afraid"

I was always pretty much of a daredevil until I had kids. Now I know
the
real meaning of "afraid". I think parents have pretty vivid
imaginations
when it comes to horrible things that could happen to their kids.

"Get yourself alone" (Something I think every stay-at-home mom dreams
of)
"Get yourself contained
Get yourself control"

For me those last two lines describe the process I go through when
one,
or both of them really piss me off. Rather than kill them I get
"contained" and "control", or "self-control", as I think he means
here.

"Alive in the Superunknown
First it steals your mind
And then it steals your...soul"

Even the music and the feel of the song fit in with my feelings about
it.
Any of you with kids (or without kids, I don't want to discriminate)
take
another listen and tell me what you think. Sorry this is so long, but
its
been waiting to come out for some time now. Hope I didn't bore you
all. I
have a personal interpretation of Zero Chance too, but I guess I'll do
that another time.

I agree with Kathie on this. No matter if you like the hokey Grammies or
not. It is still a recognition by the music industry for a job well done and
I would imagine an artist sees an upswing in sales sometimes after the show
if they won awards.

>People who turn their nose up on things like that need to do an ego

Remember Eddie Vedder and his attitude when he said the award he got
didn't matter. so why were you there Eddie?? a little TV exposure or what?
Remember the discussions on the list after that show everyone thought Eddie
acted like an ass.

 But

And remember when they won for BHS and Kim was up on stage swilling
beer...it was great and I bet the beer was free!!! Kim made an interesting
statement when he said,"I want to thank my parents who are more excited
about this than I am" So maybe they do it for "Mom", country and free
drinks!!!

Also Kathie wrote:

Very interesting thoughts on the song Kathie. But I think of "Slaves and
Bulldozers" myself in thinking about parenting. First off I feel like a
slave to a 6 year olds whims and needs sometimes and second I need a
bulldozer to clean out that pit she calls a room!!! Also repeating the
line"Everything I say is what I mean" over and over reminds me of my
constant reinforcing of "who's the boss" and if I say something I meant it
the first time don't make me say it 100 times. As in "don't jump on the
couch!" Alright all you teenagers out there I know you are rolling your
eyes!!! Just Wait!!!!!

And to Carolyn, OK no cracks...of course you won't read this for two
weeks so you won't know if I made any or not!!! toni

I finally found a copy of the BUTOW single and have to say that the Dusty
remix is incredible. I mainlylisten to electronic music and Soundgarden is
one of the few organic(by that I mean they use the traditional set up of
guitar/bass/drums, no samples, etc.) And to hear Moby remix Dusty is
great. It even surpasses the Steve Fisk remixes of Spoonman and Big Dumb
Sex. Next time I go out to a club I'm going to give the DJ the single and
have him play the song to see the reaction from the crowd. Now I know
what everyone is thinking, "Soundgarden is not clubby dance music!!!"
But God, this song locks into a groove so tight I cant not feel like
dancing to it.

Now if only Icould get ahold of the other two mixes he did! I hope they
continue to allow their music to be remixed like this. Does anyone out
there object to the remixes?

I was'nt equating singularly being nominated for a Grammy as moving in a
more commercialized direction. It's a combination of a number of
relatively recent occurances. Plus, I'm admittedly overcritical...

> I imagine early in their career being
> nominated, even if it was for the horrid Grammy, was exciting. And they
> really can't help it if they get nominated.... Shit, what's wrong with winning an award?

Nothing's wrong with it. We, as fans, are just allowed the liberty to
staunchly critique everything even though if we were in the same
situation, we'd be damn thrilled...

> People who turn their nose up on things like that need to do an ego
> check.

You're right. I do need an ego check. :) However, I don't think that
recognizing that the Grammy awards represent a commercial rather than
artistic accomplishment, and turning my nose up at the vainness that is
celebrated by the awards show and the scene that wallows in it, is
grounds for an ego check... although I could use one... ;0

I've been amazed every time they've been recognized by the Grammy

Agreed. All in all, it's an accomplishment for the band and... there
will be lot's of free beer...

Matt, first off, This is the order: "665" then "Beyond The Wheel",
and then "667". No explanation.

Hiro Yamamoto was the original bassist. He grew up with Kim and they
both moved to the Seattle area to go to college. Anyway when the
band formed it was orignally Chris, Kim, and Hiro and then they got
Matt a little later on. Hiro quit after they made Louder than Love
because he felt that music was becoming to much of a chore and he was
losing confidence in his own songs(Any one who disputes this reason
need to read more because Chris said that). Anyway after Hiro left
they toured with Jason Everman, ex-Nirvana member, and eventually
hooked up with Ben after dropping Jason. Ben played for March of
Crime and was a friend of Kim's. for more details consult the

I have to agree too-it doesn't matter what you think of the
Grammys....frankly I think the winners are fixed or that the results are
known well ahead of the ceremony. HOWEVER, to at least get a nomination is
a plus and isn't something that should be ignored or belittled. It sure
doesn't mean anything like Sg is going mainstream!

Ho, boy, I couldn't agree more with this one! EV was such a jerk to go on
and act like he did. I f he thought so little of it, why the heck even show
up? When Sg was on before, they seemed genuinely please to even be there.
At least they appreciate getting the nod from peers and that's what the
Grammys are--recognition from peers.

c'mon. let's be real here. look at the nominations this year... they are
totally lame... almost as lame as the year that jethro tull won (against
metallica for 'one') 'best hard rock act'.

the problem is that those who have voting rights in NARAS (the grammy
people) don't vote because they think it's ludicrous, and those with such
a large ego that of course they vote, vote for whatever they recognize,
which is usually no one new or interesting (since they don't listen to
music much any more -- h ence the reason Jethro Tull won that year).

people in the music industry think the grammys are a huge joke. the first
time i went i was thrilled to bits! i had been watching it for years as a
kid and to be able to GO was just amazing to me! until you get there, you
are herded around like sheep, the performers have to stay there for hours
and hours, you can't go to the bathroom (i am not kidding!), etc. anyway,
the point is that those who can vote don't, and those who can't vote but
could at least *nominate* (i'm still a non-voting member of NARAS) don't
bother. they think it's a waste of time.

so if the industry widely regards the grammys as a waste of time, i can't
really blame the artists or the audience if they take that attitude. it's
not like the *fans* are voting for them, the grammys are supposed to be
peer recognition, but if your 'peers' are a bunch of boring old farts who
haven't listened to the radio or been to a show where they weren't
backstage or bought an album in a decade -- is this the kind of peer
recognition *you* would want? it has ZERO to do with ego... the first
time you go it's a huge thrill. after that, it's just a good party.
*shrug* i'm sure guys like sg and pj and anyone else who isn't mariah
carey feel uncomfortable as all hell. what would you say if you won an
award for a genre you don't feel you belong in or want to be categorized
in? i could see if it was something that the fans voted for, but i don't
know why SG or anyone else have to suck up to the National Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences. Nothing to do with ego whatsoever. I think
it shows less ego if you refuse to be intimidated by them and have some
healthy perspective. stand up for what you believe in. i respect bands
who go and take the piss out of the ceremony more than those that suck up,
personally. i expect nothing less from soundgarden ;-)

Subject: misc. SG

Hello everyone! I haven't posted in awhile and thought I would throw
in my few bits of probably unnecessary feedback.
*I think it's great that SG was nominated for a Grammy. They've
worked hard and I believe hard work should be acknowledged. Maybe
some people see it as commercial b.s., and perhaps some of it
is....but I do not (notice: personal opinion here) feel that that is
the intent of the Grammies. Hell, if I worked my ass off on an
album, I would not expect an award or anything, but would be honored
to be nominated with such other talented artists as the Smashing
Pumpkins, STP, Rage, and AIC. Whether you like their music or not,
the issue is that these are all very talented groups who have made an
impact in rock music. Those who believe this is all just some
commercial b.s., I'm at a loss for words.....why does everything have
to be taken so damn negatively?? To many, many people this is a
very BIG deal, and a great honor. Focusing on whatever hidden agenda
some may feel is going on....well you're just helping ruin the true
spirit of the Grammies. Okay flame me, I don't care. But seriously
think about it...I don't hear people getting into a huge uproar over
such award celebrations as say the Olympics. We are showing
respect/admiration for those who have worked hard...and it's NOT just
the winners we are showing respect for, but for everyone who was
nominated and most importantly for the creativity of music.
So there! =)~

downloading and it keeps getting shorter every time. I've downloaded other
mpgs with no problem and I saved them. What's wrong here??? I'll continue
to try, but any help would be much appreciated.

May Soundgarden be with you.

Ack, what a mess. The poor man is obviously confused about his own
work. The photos from Des Moines seem to at least be labeled correctly
(ugly as they are), but some of the other Soundgarden photos have a
bunch of mistakes. Witness http://niels.com/display.asp?num=1536,
which is not even of Soundgarden, unless there's a fifth member of the
band I don't know about. Also, http://www.niels.com/display.asp?num=1535
is labeled as Koln, Germany, but that's incorrect: the photo is from the
1995 Lowlands Festival, on August 25 in the Netherlands.

And speaking of the Lowlands Festival, some of you have probably seen
the two photos of Chris on the SG site that were taken by Jan van
Oldenmark... stay tuned for some of his *phenomenal* photos of Matt at
the Rotterdam show in October 1996...

Hey List!

I'm feeling like nothingman posting so much over my break...but if you could
only see the snow and feel the cold outside :-) Well, a couple of you can.

Anyway...

I finally picked up Guitar's That Rule the World Vol. II - Smell the Fuzz
(The Superstar Guitar Album). Now that is one long title!!! Mr. Thayil
makes a contribution with the mythical band Dark Load (one step stranger
than The CDC Boyz :) <soapbox> Some of you may have no idea what I'm
talking about so please consult the FAQ and/or other documentation on the
web page. It's all there...or if it isn't...it will be :-) </soapbox>

"Brewicide" - Dark Load

Follow the story of a young lager named Bud as he travels from Milwaukee to
the cavernous underground of Buffalo :-) That's is exactly what the song
sounds like. BIG BASS...slow, chugging, prodding...very Melvinish (please
consult your Seattle music dictionary and look up Melvin's...then go buy
_Houdini_. ) Picture yourself in a boat on a river with carmal coloured
bubbles and a white foamy head. The lead and rhythm functions by Mr. Jeff
Gilbert (a common topic around here a while ago) are quite exquisite! Mr.
Thayil's playing is very cool....and the reprise (you gotta hear it to
understand) is phenomenal! <sounding like chevy chase from caddyshack> Be
the beer... </chevy chase>

A definite must buy for anyone who's a fan of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and
Yngwie Malmsteen guitar pyrotechnics. Also recommended for anyone that has
ever enjoyed a beer.

gotta go...I'm running outta change,

Steve
" Blue light on the avenue
God knows they got to you
An empty glass, the lady sings
Eyes swollen like a bee sting
   Blinded you lost your way
Through the side streets and the alleyway
Like a star exploding in the night
Falling to the city in broad daylight
   An angel in Devil's shoes
   Salvation in the blues..."

Hey everyone!

FIrst off, this is highway robbery! There are only 3 *unreleased* songs on
Foreshocks, and with some work can be found for MUCH cheaper. In fact, the
Blessed SOMMS Goddess Dena (who looks like Xena) found it for $20, and says
it's not worth any more than that. Geez, Cellophane Square wouldn't even try

SOMMSvention in Vegas ideas!!!

Soundgarden has rumored to be doing a spring/summer tour, so when this is
announced we can accordingly schedule some dates. I would think sometime in
early summer would be good, before it gets TOO hot, and the majority of
people can have enough notice so they can get time off if needed and/or will
not be in school. Time to save up for the journey is also helpful. So, if any
ideas are in your heads, by all means, share! I'll get more back to you soon.

I had the same idea on this as Aaron. Late June (20th --->). I figured
school would be on hiatus for most, this gives us plenty of chance to
prepare. The balmy (steaming) Vegas atmosphere will beckon and call us
from all corners of the globe to unite and convene in the Nevada
dessert. Vegas loves conventions. It's gonna be hot already in June, but
it's nothing compared to July, August or September.

Let's Do It!!

Subject: my take on the grammies

First off, and I think everyone agrees with me on this, the grammies are a
hoax. Like Caryn said, it's stupid businessman that never listen to the
radio and never go to concerts. And it's their opinion about who they pick
to win. And who says our opinion isn't better than theirs (it is)? I also
think that you shouldn't put musicians against eachother like this. Bands
get put in the wrong categories and it gets all messed up. Are they
playing the same songs? No, so how can you judge one over another. And a
lot of the bands are only the 'mainstream' and 'hip' (flavor of the month)
bands that get nominated. There are so many unsigned bands that have way
more talent that it just isn't fair. I agree with what Eddie Vedder di at
the grammies. He was not trying to get TV exposure. He didn't like the
award, but at least he showed up to get it and didn't totally insult the
ceremony. Just my .2 cents. Please, reply...

If she got it for $20, then she got it for a steal. True, a lot of the songs
have been released on other CDs. But it's the rarity of the release, not
necessarily the songs, that drive the price. Is the Beatles....Yesterday and
Today Butcher Babies Covers worth considerably less because you can find the
same songs on the more commercially available covers? I've never seen this
for less that $40 beacause it wasn't as widely released as
Superuninterview(which wasn't that widely released anyways to radio), and in
Goldmine they're selling it for $50...and mine is virgin, never
played(because I already had all the tracks).
