hey,
Well...the interpretetions were quite different. :)
The only way to find the real interpretation is to ask Chris himself, and I'm
not really sure if he still remembers his thoughts when he wrote this lyrics.
And that's something cool with lyrics and poems: Everyone has his own thoughts
and feelings about it...and everyone interpretes it in an own individual way.
Well...this small thought was on my mind. Btw...it's late now and I just
finished the SG-part of my homepage...ooooh yes.... :)

Nope. That's not what it was. You just sing quieter then. Besides, SNL has
a VERY big studio. And also, the size doesn't matter. Remeber that other
bands sound just fine when playing there.

It's not the sound check that was the problem. It's probably just that
Chris was having problems that night. He might have been nervous, for some
reason. Or he might have had a cold or the flu.

It's funny that the original airing of the show didn't get this much
discussion. Nor did the second, third, or fourth airing. Fifth's time's a
charm, I suppose.

Yeah... you can compare Chris to other people. He's not god. He's a mortal
human being. Think of it. Think of Kiss. Kiss puts on a show up there. Or
Zepplin. I bet you could compare Chris's stage presence to that of Plant.

He wasn't off key. Just struggling a little bit. It wasn't typical Chris.
He stayed in a comfort blanket. Maybe he was having a problem...

Thank you!!! No one is perfect!! Sigh of relief. Kim sounded damn good,
though. That's the Pretty Noose solo the best I've ever heard it.

And Matt kicked ass.... "Haaaaang-iiiiiing froooooom"

Seattle grunge can be summed up by listening to Steven J. Burnstien's
spoken work poem on the 200 release.

Not really. PJ has made themselves less accessable and more "out there".
People are just adjusting to Soundgarden and their KICK ASS DRUMMER (did

Here we go...somebody I can have a conversation with.

Grunge was simply an overnight attempt at turning the underground scene
into the next big thing. And it worked too. Nirvana. Pearl Jam.
Soundgarden. Tad. Mudhoney. Screaming Trees. Every major record label tried
to snap up everything Seattle. And it backfired, in many cases.

Pearl Jam decided that they would be their own band, rather than letting a
record label decide what they'd do. That's partially Eddie's doing, but
what is Pearl Jam without him? Seriously? It's nothing in this corporate
world where Eddie's face is in Time magazine and Seventeen.

Tad came right out and did what they wanted to do and got dropped from
their label beacuse of it. A picture of Clinton holding a joint saying
"That's heavy shit, man." was NOT what the corporation had in mind.

The Screaming Trees kept on doing what they did best, but it wasn't good
enough. Fortunately, they're not too radical for a label to keep, and
they're a band that's timeless. The next Led Zepplin? The next Beatles?
Watch them.

Mudhoney started ripping on their record label the day they were signed.
They didn't care what was going on. Just as long as they could have fun.
That's not what Reprise bought when they were in the commodity exchange.
They wanted hard and powerful grunge... they didn't get it.

Soundgarden was going to be the next big heavy metal thing. But they
decided that they would do what they wanted to do. And it worked.
Badmotorfinger. Then Superunknown pulled in the big bucks and the big
sales, keeping grunge alive. With DOTU, they did what they wanted to again.
But it wasn't "experimental enough". It's not "what was expected". It's not
"good enough". It's too mainstream. Why? Because Soundgarden rewrote
mainstream with Superunknown. Now, with DOTU, they're doing what they did
before... and it's too simple.

But the nails were put into the coffen when the Jesus of grunge pulled the
trigger and ended it.

So what? In the beginning, the trendy people listened to the New Kids on
the Block. For a while, the trendy people listened to Henry Rollins and
Tool. Then it turned into Soundgarden and Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Now, it's
Bush and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Some of us will be trendy, some of us will stick to what used to be trendy,
and some of us will listen to what we like to listen to.

Howdy everyone out there,

I hate to post something on this list and end up sounding like a
total jackass but here goes. About nine months ago, I was in my local
college type record\rare stuff store, and I came across a SG import or
bootleg that I had never seen before. Now rest assured that this was not
Fresh Deadly Rarities or Stolen Prayers because I have both of those.
Anyway, this one was a blue color and it was a close up of Chris Cornell's
face. I really could kick my own ass for not buying this one, but I did'nt
have the money at the time. Needless to say, when I went back to get it, it
was gone. If anyone knows what the hell this CD is, please reply to the
list or to me. Thanks for reading this. I will shut up now.

if i remember correctly, the black hole sun video first came out
on mtv right around the same time i first saw SG, which was june 14,
1994, in rochester... and i'm pretty sure i remember that when the video
first got airplay on mtv there was no snake tongue and no girl in a
tutu.. and later on when the video was played i would see the girl with
the snake tongue and the girl in the tutu.. so, i don't think bhs got
censored, i think the opposite happened.. lord knows why they changed
the video like that :) or if they didn't change it they musta played
the censored version before they began to play the uncensored one.. and
i really don't have the faintest idea why mtv would censor a girl with a
forked tongue and a girl in a tutu.. just my + :)

What happened with the video to Black Hole Sun is that in their
haste to get to the video out, they release it sort of unfinished.
They then go back in to add the special effects and re-edit. I've
seen this happen on several videos.

From: "Shawn David Kennedy" <kenned79@pilot.msu.edu>

I was at a record store yesterday when I found the new bootleg "Waiting on
the Upside." It is actually a decent bootleg. The sound would probably be
considered in the A-/B+ range. The only small problem occurs during "My Wave",
when the sound fades in and out for a couple of seconds. Other than that, it
is fine. I was happy to finally hear SG's cover of "Waiting For The Sun",
since they didn't play it in Detroit when they were here, and Lollapalooza
didn't make it to Michigan last summer. The bootleg is of the last Lolla show
in California. Well, I just thought I would share that with y'all. I'm going
back to bed.

Yes, It looks like the BHS video was edited. When I first watched the
BHS version on the 'Hello, We are Soundgarden' compilation, I too

I meant to respond a while ago to MoonDruid's statement that a good
way of being a fan would be to read Chris Nickson's book, New Metal
Crown.

I disagree. If you've read through the articles on the website, you've
basically already read the entire book.

According to the management, the book is a collection of pieced-
together magazine articles, and was in no way authorized or endorsed
by Soundgarden or Silver Managment. Nickson was allowed into the
management's press archive under the pretense that he was writing a
thorough article for a discography magazine. He didn't interview
anyone for the book and didn't ask permission to write it. Soundgarden
was not pleased about the book's release as they would have preferred
to choose an appropriate author and release date for a biography.

Subject: Drawing Flies & SNL

I know these threads are several days old and I apologize, but I'm a Mon-Fri
e-mailer AND a digest person so shoot me!

Anyway, way back when Lance gave us his interpretation of Drawing Flies which
I thought was very interesting. I have honestly never even thought about what
this song was about but now I have so much food for thought (I won't even go
in to the masturbation theory--that's private:-)).

Lance also wrote on that same post:
I'm the only person in the world

who thinks 'Burden in my Hand' is about the secret nuclear testing in the

Utah & Nevada desert in th 1950's (The truth is lying beneath the river bed.

Follow me into the desert).

Wow. Very intriguing theory. Sorry if you've posted this before--this is the
first I've heard of it and, although I'm not sure if this is a good thing or
not, I can kinda see where you're at with this, Lance. See, you're not the
only fucked up person in the world:-)

Anyway, on to the SNL performance. I've never actually *seen* it but I heard
it last weekend and...ouch! I had heard that it was, well, disappointing but
I was truly not prepared for what I heard. It was really awful, probably even
more so because I didn't even have the pleasure of actually *watching* them
play and virtually all I could hear was the vocals. I've seen SG live several
times and this in no way diminishes my love for them or their music, it's
just kind of drag that so many people who had maybe never heard them play
live before (and maybe never will again!) had to hear this.

Does anyone have any actual facts on why Chris' performance was so bad? Or
was it just an off day? Also, when did this show first come on?

On a completely unSoundgarden-related note, is anyone else having severe
problems facing five days in a row at work after all these damn holidays?!?!?

Howdy everyone in sommsville,

I was just scanning the list for Tuesday and I think it would be an
excellent idea to make a compilation of sommsters doing their takes on their
favorite SG tunes. My band "Hell is Other People" could do a kick ass
rendition of Slaves and Bulldozers or Burden in my Hand or maybe even Like
Suicide if I can muster up enough balls to attempt such a classic
"Thayilesque" solo such as that one. Anyway, keep us posted if there are
any plans to put together such a compilation.

Also, I had a completely warped idea that the whole Superunknown
album was drug inspired. I believed that I had discovered the meaning of
life (and Superunknown) one night while in a chemically enhanced state. I
found that my interpretation of songs like Superunknown and The Fourth of
July were way off base when I read in a magazine that Soundgarden are drug
free. Hmm.....guess I'll have to come up with another interpretation of
those songs. Anyway, who cares, the album kicks ass and that is all that
matters. Just thought that maybe someone else thought the same thing at one
time.

Yes, I've got it on tape (that's how I learned BIMH) and have watched almost
all of the 42 times they've showed it (I'm sure it was more than 3...) and
lived, and I've been reading all the negative reviews, so this last time I
payed a little more attention (though unfortunately I couldn't compare it to
the concerts I didn't go to this year...:(..) . . . ok, so maybe Chris'
voice wasn't at it's TOP, but look at (or listen to) the rest of the band! I
thought that was one of Kim's better solos on Pretty Noose . . . just as
good as the record one if not better . . . a bit slower, not as wild as most
of 'em, but he used more strings (something I admire when soloing in a
tuning like CGCGGE)! (if you folks haven't noticed, the solo on DOTU is
technically all on one string except for 1 note...)
and Matt didn't seem to bad, though I wasn't paying that much attention . .
. I was too busy trying to figure out that fifth (or fourth depending on how
you count it) chord of the chorus of BIMH . . .

No, it isn't out yet. It comes out next week. And yes there will be millions

you can buy IE the Garbage one) but of course it is only a Aust. release,
maybe NZ? The shop I called (Skinnys) had no idea of the track listings so

And I go to Fraser Island next week...hmm stay and pick up the EP or

Since I am a bit behind I'll say it now: Hope everyone has had a good

Although this person sounds like the same guy who wrote to this list a
couple of months ago calling us all poseurs and asking how many of us
had SOMMS, I tend to agree in his/her angle here. I wonder if this
Details episode and other recent instances reflect another somewhat

Umm... I agree... with DOTU, SG are no longer cutting edge... (Do I
dare bring up my 'SG is mainstream' argument again? No.) However, I
would've liked to have seen this guy person call Cornell a 'wussy' circa
1991 in person.

In general, I think these rather rude letters seem to somewhat comply
with my initial reaction to Cornell's Details focus. Actually, I
wouldn't have a problem with it if Cornell just did the interview and
bypassed the CK-1 photoshoot. Just my opinion.

I would put this together there are enough people to participate. As
you said, this will be SOMMSTERS doing their takes of SG songs, but
*not* a promo for a SG tribute band. If done, I think it should be done
primarily for our entertainment. I think it would be cool to simply put
.wav clips on the site so anyone can get a listen, but I know there are
space limitations. So far, i've heard from:
 Judd - Slaves & Bulldozers/ Like Suicide
Gregg (cornell <melusk2@crow.cybercomm.net>) - willing, but

SG tribute Band Guy - ...
Me - Toy Box, FOBD, Nothing to Say, etc... I'm limited because I just
have me and a guitar and a little home studio...

Yeah, I missed it too, but that's only because I didn't go. It was playing
in LA during the time of its heavy promotion, in Santa Monica, I think.

go to the bottom of the page, and type in the password. If you don't
remember it, don't worry--I've already emailed it to you.

I am one of those people craving a "new" sound. I really love Beck's album,
because it's not the same song done over again on the same CD! I tired
quickly of the new music that came out in 1996. So many copycat
'alternative' bands, it's rediculous! Presently, ska is an 'alternative'
sub-category, but now it's slowly becoming pop music too. I presently like
it at the moment, though. Rave, techno-ambient--whatever you want to call
it--is presently the kind of music with experiments and such. In that
respect, it's great. But, as soon as rave music becomes more popular and
less 'underground' it will probably become pop music. You hear how KROQ
plays Chemical Brothers to their mostly 'alternative' audience?
Okay,so how does SG relate? Well, I think that SG is very diverse in sound.
I really don't like the fact that they will be popular with this CD for only
a short time--MTV and commercial radio will dump them soon enough. Anyway,
I think SG is better than most rock bands. They don't have the repetitive
riffs(which annoy me sometimes) and sometimes their tunes can be downright
weird--I especially like that about the band. I'm having trouble right now
describing SG; words suck sometimes. Anyway, SG is a fantastic band.

I think it's great that they're nominated. I guess the Grammy folks lost
that "heavy metal" category. I don't remember who was in that category last
year, but I remember that it was rediculous. The Pumpkins got nominated for
7. With heavy touring and the release of a ton of B-sides(in a cute package)
you're bound to be noticed by the Grammy folks!

For all the Canadians out there... World Music Imports, operating out of
Calgary, will be importing the Australian Tour Pack. They don't have it
listed in their on-line catalog yet but I e-mailed and inquired, they
sent me the following note:

"Price including gst, tax, shipping is 48.79cdn delivery will be late
january, release january 13th we will not get them until late january
due to distance."

$48.79 may seem like quite alot, but it is actually probably about the
same price that you'ld pay if you were to import it from Australia or
the US after the exchange rate... Plus, duty must be paid on items over
$20.

I want to order it through Colombia House, but I'm having a hell of a time

soundtrack overall? Of course, I want "Blind Dogs", but I also want a good
soundtrack. I never even saw the movie(my VCR's jacked up)! Email me

Hello kiddies!

I've got some questions.

1) Does anyone know the tab for REACH DOWN? I'm doin' that for a show at
school, and I need the tab.

2)what's the password for the directory? I'd like to check it out, plus I
need to add things, but I have to check it out first.

3)Is SOMMSVENTION '97 in Las Vegas official? Anyone wiling to persuade my
parents to let me go, just come one down. I'd LOVE to go. what's better
than spending time with people just like you? :)

4)Did anyone ever see an article or an interview of Ben in a magazine before?
How about Matt? I've been looking, but I never found anything.

I can't wait for my calender to come. It's my first year I'm buyin', I
always used to make my own....(and it featured equal number of picks of the
members)

> (right?)..

those of us who look negatively upon the band's choices for recent
b-sides (myself included) will point to old favourites like kyle petty,
birth ritual or fell on black days in some incarnation. most of the
singles from dotu have featured (imho) a fairly poor selection of
non-album tracks, so the next single may follow this rather frustrating
pattern.

if you are, however, an optimistic listener, there are a few songs
that *may* turn up on the next single if we all cross enough fingers;
songs that have been performed live or have been mentioned by the band in
various interviews. the titles I can remember off the top of my head read:
'anxious', 'sounds like days', 'christi', 'search and destroy', 'waiting
for the sun', 'ocean front', 'your curse' (?), and 'cleaning my gun'.
some of these are more likely than others, but time will tell if any of
them are likely at all.

recently I thought that the band were releasing these old b-sides
in place of new ones simply because they were hoarding their new songs for
a new album (which all four members seem enthusiastic to record). but I
read in _juice_ magazine last week that writing for the next record has
not yet begun, so maybe none of these songs (studio version or otherwise)
will ever see the light of day :(

interesting observation: if you are an australian lister, walk
into your nearest newsagency and take a flip through said _juice's_
coverage of the big day out's history. therein lies a quaint little
picture of (left to right) johnny ramone, kim thayil, ben sheperd, james
iha and d'arcy. cool enough, right? well, the rather comical part is the
caption, which reads "...kim thayil, some guy, james iha...". kinda weird
that they didn't recognise him, since the magazine also sports a three
page article on the band with the requisite full-page photo :)

Not that it matters, but to me it's almost kind of insulting to be nominated
for a Grammy.

The Grammy awards are a totally money "flavor of the moment", that celebrates
the shit that ruins good music(i.e. commercialized, homginized, lobotimized
horse shit to be consumed by our mostly braindead & lethargic society)

Soundgarden, it's members, & it's music, reflect none of these things.

I think I would have preferred it if they had been skipped this year. Let
Whitney Houston, Micheal Bolton, Phil Collins, and the rest of the mundane
crowd have their mean nothing awards.

But that's me. I'm a soundgarden snob who misses the day when 9 out of 10
people responded Sound-"who????"

there is an excellent chance of that happening, mandy (for those
outside australia, _rage_ is a music program that airs during the wee
hours of the morning and routinely has touring artists come in and program
up to three hours of their favourite videos/music). chris seemed to enjoy
doing it last time, and ben seemed to enjoy making a fool of himself in
front of the camera (he was wearing a 'hey-ho' ramones shirt, took
dramatic pulls from his can of coke, danced in front of a mirror, made
like a horror film bad-guy by placing his face above a lampshade and
practiced his seaman hand signals while chris calmly talked about the
video-making process).

I may have said this before, so if I'm boring you with the same
old hokey information, please disconnect now. the weekend that chris was
scheduled to program _rage_, he didn't do the normal thing. hmmm...I'll
start from the beginning (but I'll try to make it short). friday night is
reserved for new videos, saturday is for guest programmers and specials
(sadly, I missed the seattle night). most times the clips picked by the
musician/band is interspersed with short intros or witty stories furnished
by the programmer. on the saturday that chris was on, quite a few songs
were played. I didn't take great note of what they were at that point,
because I wasn't quite the fan I am now <kicking self>. the songs didn't
seem to have a common thread, but they also didn't seem to be songs that
chris would choose.

the odd thing was that chris didn't appear to lend any interesting
intros or comments. what followed was partly normal - the programmer's
available music videos (no, flower musn't have been released here) are
played in chronolical order. unlike any other edition I've seen, it was
during *this* part that chris spoke; not about his choices of music but
about his *own* music and the relevance of music videos to the music
industry. perhaps the program's chief realised an interview would be
cooler than having just go "this is a good song, blah, blah, blah"?

this post is probably a lot longer than it should have been, but
I'll just add two things. first, in another interview with chris conducted
while they were here in 1994, he said that there was no way he could pick
his five favourite songs or five songs that changed his life, so maybe the
songs that preceded all the soundgarden videos that night weren't of his
choosing. secondly, if someone from the band were to do it again, for this
reason it probably won't be chris (I would personally like to see _rage_
programmed by ben or kim). if someone from the band *does* end up as
guest programmer, some australian lister is sure to write down the songs
played and words said so that all sommsters may know them :)

Hello. This is the first time I ever posted. (tee hee) I hope no one's
sick of this subject yet, well I'll keep it short. Anyway, what was I
gonna say? Oh yeah I thought They sounded beautiful except for Chris's
voice especially on Pretty Noose. I think his voice has to be in 100%
tip top condition because that's probably one of the hardest Soundgarden
songs to sing and I think Chris is the only person in the world who has
the ability to sing that song. No one else can sing that unless they
used their head voice but that would be like cheating. Okay, that's all
sirs and madames.

  special effects/ help with lyrics.

Well, I just ran to the T.V. and watched my BHS video that I managed to
record off of MTV many years ago and I saw what I thought I remembered:
1. I do have the lizzard tongue in my copy. There is a close up on the
glamor lady's face then the camera backs up and out comes the lizzard tounge
to snatch the fly.
2. Yes, at the end a big glob of shiny black goo floats out of the baby
carriage up to the "hole"
3. Apparently it was edited at some time.

My own comment is that this video creeps me out every time I see it.
Creepy.

Anyway, help me out guys:

"Throw yourself away
Give me little bits of,
more than I can take
if it sits upon your tounge
or naked in your eyes
give me little bits of,
more than I can try."

Does anyone know this lyric? It isn't any Soundgarden song I've ever heard
but I don't have them all. I've been wracking my brain but I just don't
know (even thought it seems familiar). It kinda sounds like a Tool song
I've heard, dee dee?

Any input would be appreciated.

I plan to get my BUTOW single this week. Living in LA, it shouldn't be too

you also pluralize "CDs". Is there more than one version of the BUTOW
