Opened this week's Kerrang to find a letter from none other than SOMM's very
own Gemma Lewis!!

For those who are new to the list, or whose short term memory has been shot
to hell by too much Christmas revelry, Gemma won a competition to meet
Soundgarden at their Brixton show in September. The *very lucky* girl very
kindly posted her experiences to the list and you can find the pictures on
Seth's page.

Basically, the letter was a thank you to Kerrang and a strong declaration
that Soundgarden are defintely not miserable and Susan is really nice(which
of course *we* sommsters know). A teeny tiny pic of Gemma and the band was
included. The typically Kerrang-style headline was 'Soundgarden "not
miserable" shock!'

I'm with Lance and Carolyn on this one. In fact, I believe Lance's
interpretation of the lyrics is also the 'official' one. But Bill's take on
the song was certainly food for thought! We've said before (and no doubt
will again) it's what *you* get out of the lyrics that matters.

But it's kind of funny to me that it's not we Chris-obsessed hootchies who
see a strongly sexual element in Chris' lyrics. (Remember the infamous Mr
Apple's ideas about the meaning of Black Hole Sun?!)

Or maybe we're just not saying ;-)

sebastion. . .it's great to have you here, but is it necessary to post
10,789,332 messages per digest?

i definately agree that soundgarden's snl performance was not up to
spex. i didn't really notice it until yesterday, but chris has a good
deal of trouble controlling his upper range. i think that maybe this
could be due to him usually singing very loudly, but he had to tone it
down because of snl's small theatre???

of course, i'm probably full of goat droppings.

does anyone have a tower records nearby? if so, please e-mail me with
their phone number! i am looking for a cd (non-soundgarden...sorry)

hey guys--

just wanted to echo eliza's post of a few days ago. we got to meet over new
year's, and it was very cool. she was a trooper hanging out with a bunch of
people she didn't know (from the afghan whigs list) and listening to new
music--glad i caught her in one of her sg "down times"!

since i joined this list (october?), i have met sean (hey, are you back on
the list yet?), karen and sandy, mariana and now eliza. to me, meeting
fellow fans is one of the best things about this list. speaking of which, is
anyone in washington, dc going to the girls against boys shows at the black
cat?--if so e-mail me privately and let's meet. :-)

i caught sg on snl last night. i agree that chris' voice was not in top form
(i also guessed that he was nervous), but the rest of the band seemed fine,
and i liked the rendition of burden, aside from the vocals.

lastly, 3 holiday additions to the my sg collection include: the black hole
sun import with jcp and my wave live and the spoonman remix, the pretty noose
limited edition 7" (thanks scott), and "groovy reaction", a 7' recorded live
in san fran in '89 with gun and thank you.

hope you all had a nice holiday...back to work for me tom'w...darn!

C'mon... playing the bass is his job. Just like some people are accountants

I don't think it's about masturbation. I just don't. Maybe suicide... maybe
depression... maybe it's about writing lyrics, actually.

Think about it... most of the time, writing lyrics for songs isn't an easy

Thanks for everyone who posted their "best of '96" top ten lists. =) I
got a kick out of 'em. I thought that instead of posting my '96 review, I'd
use my psycho...uh... psychic powers to post the "Best of '97." These are a
few of the things we have to look forward to this year:
- -----------------------------------
- - Soundgarden sets up a photo shoot with the official SOMMS hootchie, Shroom
Girl, to finally pose nude. Chris and Matt strut their stuff totally in the
buff, and Ben goes so far as to strip down to his undies. Kim removes his
shirt, but declines to go any farther because (as he secretly confides to the
hootchie) he thinks that he has chicken legs. =)

- - Soundgarden's popularity soars, but they decide to forgo playing in arenas
in favor of a club tour. SOMMSters are given first dibs on tickets for each
show.  =)

- - Seth is hired to take over the official SG website, but he keeps up the
unofficial site anyway. He adds a section for naked pictures of the band,
which are thoughtfully provided by the SOMMS hootchie. =)

- - The KTMS is refused private funding from various parties, so the SOMMS
sheriff introduces a full line of KTMS clothing and riot gear. Immediately,
every MTV VJ is seen with KTMS cotton towels (used for snapping at annoying
persons), KTMS gas masks (the latest rage in Paris), and KTMS stun-guns (for
use on annoying lead singers who whine too much). The KTMS rakes in
millions, and our Thuggy gets to personally oversee the breaking of Heather
Mifflin's kneecaps. =)

That's all for now, kiddies... more later.

Thank you. I agree fully. Soundgarden is a band. They make music. They
happen to make great music. There's no reason to idolize them though. And
I'm also really sick of this Chris worship.

Actually, I've got a bootleg from somewhere in the UK. In between songs, a
woman screams out "Take your shirt off!" all the time!!! Over and over!!
UGH!! "Take your bloody shirt off, Chris!"

It's on the Real Wild Children boot, for those of you that are interested.
Great boot, PS. At the beginning of "Beyond the Wheel" on the second disc
(first concert on that disc), he sings a part from "Stairway to Heaven".

And anyway... why can't you all be Ben groupies like Jamie (is she still

Thank you. I agree fully. And good point about nervous. At the end of
Pretty Noose, he put his hand to his heart... usually a sign of "Thank god

But Matt was damn good. I think it's funny how he played with his mouth

Hey there!

This weekend i made a big issue of the fact that i wanted to see SG on
tv,...they were on the SNL show,...and so all my friends that had nothing
else better to do watched it with me,..........it just so happens that
this was the worst performance SG has ever given,...Chris's voice was
aillen (means it was really bad)...he sang pretty noose pretty
horribly...but it happens to anyone, and the bottom line was that i was
just happy to be watching them,...i mean you can't compare Chris's stage
presence with that of any other performer,...and the band kicks ass, so
even if he was majorly off key and sounded as course as a horse, i loved
every fucking minute of it, and even waited for them to sing again,...all
the while my friends are saying, "this is your favorite band, they sound
like shit!"...I DON"T CARE!...ive heard them live, and they jammed...i was
completely fullfilled after their performance...it could have been better,
but no one is perfect!

well, it was time for the semi-annual 'clean out the cd's and get rid of the

box) and so we trekked out to the store with the best soundgarden selection

there). got like $150 for the stuff and found the tone dogs cd used for $8

the grape one, just a black one, but *sigh* it's mine now ;-) he even
knocked $5 off the price so i got it for $55, quite a steal if you ask me ;-)

btw, if ANYONE still wants a clear vinyl version of DoTU, he's got a HUGE

also, i haven't been able to verify this and i don't recall it being

Hey I've heard of this Junk Gun fella. He's was around before the days of
Windows '95 and those long file names....or his name would of been "Junk Gun
Fever". A line in a song only cool people know ;) I think he was sorta

after saving the Korean family in the village 10 clicks from Seoul....He's

pastures? Gotta check the wind...

Then again...and I believe this was very recent - I heard he was spotted in
Fargo, *South* Dakota, filling out credit card applications for Bob Dole,
Neal Knox and Newt Gingrich and using those cards sent to his various po
box's around the Dakota's to fund his very dangerous militia group, the
_Gunny Junk's_. Who, and here is the *Soundgarden content*, was a one time
roadie for Soundgarden. The GJ's, according to various intelligence reports
given to Monica (a one time mercenary), wanted to annex every golf course
east of the Mississippi and use the land to grow cannabis for the people of
California thereby cashing in on that state's latest passed Proposition.

Obviously someone of his intelligence (and wit) should be considered armed
and dangerous. The best course of action would be to let him fade away like
Vixen, Romeo Void and Morris Day. Giving him attention only fuels his
psychosis :-)

I agree with the rest of the list in saying that the SNL performance
wasn't up to par. I guess if I had seen it when It was live I would have
liked it better but after seeing Soundgarden live, not much can compare.
A reason for the poor show was probably the dull SNL crowd who can just
sit in their seats. At least SG overshadowed the rest of the SNL show
which was truly awful. Anyone remember the Rage Agaisnt the Machine/SNL
incident? Even though this is a Soundgarden list I hafta say I support
Rage 100%!

i was going to line by line write my interpretation to drawing flies but
realized that would be arduous and might result in every single SG line
being written about in SOMMS. not to say that people's individual take
on a song aren't of interest, but rather, it could get cumbersome to open
the floodgates of decomposing every SG line.

but in a nutshell, the 1st person take: he is guilty because he
feels like a voyuer (uninvited company) looking at a porno magazine.
most of the song is about the person trying to free himself from blame.
images of pedestols, cannons and pistols firing are his ejaculation.
(notice how i refrained from saying the word "penis") ;-)

it would be interesting to hear people's interpretation
on some of the more abstract songs (like Lance's spin on burden
in my hand).

ps are there any "silent" sommsters who live in north dakota along with

Carolyn My Friend don't you ever stop signing off with your wonderful MF..
If Carolyn can't use her MF signature then you shouldn't use the Moon
Druid cover name either - just remember allot of us long term members know
your real name!!!! :-P

I know your real name too JunkGunF - but I think there is allot of us SOMM
members who do...

Yes I'm still here just doing a month of vacation time. I have until the
16th and then I'll be back to bug the list and the S.I.S. This is the
first time in over 10 years that I have taken off this much time and used
it just for me. It's been really great the man in my life is here for a
month and we are hitting every used CD and record store in the
VA/DC/Washington area. Sorry SOMMs members in this area if it's
Soundgarden and it's out there it's mine.. Does anyone know why "GO" close
down???

I do!!!! And I do it a lot! Last night was the last time I checked
to see wether Geoff was a guy or a hot chick. (I must confess that
I still don't have it really clear :). So PLEASSSEEE don't even think
on killing it to save disk space. PLEASSEEE!!!!!

Besides when Matt surfs over the digests in the web page he can quickly
check who is badmouthing him (is that a verb???). On the other hand,
perhaps he doesn't even have the passwd to get in ;).

Is grunge dying or is the mass, popular audience which embraced the so-called
alternative sound just letting it go and moving onto, say, the new
disco/dance pop stations that are sweeping the country? A recent article in
THE OREGONIAN (Fri, Oct. 25, 1996) correlated PJs record sales figures with
their commerical avoidance. But I think the decline in their sales, though
clearly due in part to their lack of interest in being sold as a packaged
commodity, is also due to the changing desires of the wide, popular audience
which was initially won over with TEN.

BTW, the PJ figures briefly stated looked like this (from 1991 to 1996): TEN
album sales: 7.7 M, VS: 5.4 M, Vitalogy: 4.3 M, No Code: 829,000. It is
interesting that SGs audience has WIDENED substantially over the same period.

so your point is? all the stupid 'alternative is dead' articles i have
read anywhere have grouped sg and pj together and pointed to them both as
examples of the Death of Alternative. DoTU's album sales are as
'disappointing' for sg as No Code's were for pj (in other words, i don't
think the bands give a hoot because they're making music they want to
make).

i watched a documentary last night -- part of the time-life 'history of
rock and roll' series and elvis costello had an intereting comment,
relevant to this discussion: 'it doesn't say anywhere in my contract that
i have to make the same record over and over again'. i know seth would
like to see BMF over and over and over, while ipersonally really enjoy
DoTU and adore No Code (and would be happy as a clam if they never did
another track from 'Ten' live ever again, period).

alternative as a genre is over, grunge is not dying, it has been dead for
YEARS now. the only ones who still use that term are the media (which,
don['t forget, made up the term m in the first place! didn'dt anyone here
see 'hype!' !!!!!)
