Subject: hello world, I'm here now

To all subscribers, hi from me. I'm from Perth, Western Australia, and this
is my first foray into this particular netherworld of modern technology (no,
I did not receive a modem for Christmas). So since this is all new to me
(at least), apologies for my naivete.

So, if anyone would like to mail me, that'd be great.

I'm interested in getting in touch with anyone who might like to become my
"Overseas Agent", or be interested in trading stuff, since here in
Australia, you're HIGHLY unlikely to pickup anything much except mainstream
Australian pressings through our extremely middle of the road music stores.
The only way I was able to get hold of a copy of "Alive in the Superunknown"
(despite having it on order through several more reputable shops) was when
my Dad went to the US for a holiday, and purchased it in a store in Houston.

So, if you're interested in anything at all that I may be able to get here
(mainly Australian pressings of albums and singles) and trading them for US
promos, EP's, and singles (etc), get in touch.

Until then, take it easy.

This is *so* true in most business... but we are talking about a
business that has been built around the production and marketing of
art. The essence of art is to explore new boundaries and free
expression. The music industry has set boundaries for bands and their
music must conform to the industry's expectations. The artists, in a
sense, are slaves to the industry.

> the record industry. yes it isn't fair. yes it sucks. but that's
> America.

Another example of America's false sense of freedom... Freedom of
expression within the boundaries set by record exec's.

> just because a band has become
> "mainstream" or has "sold-out" is no reason to turn against them.

I don't think *anyone* is turning against SG, and no-one has said that
SG have "sold-out". I hope I did'nt give that impression.

> sometimes a band has to do what a band has to do.

Ahh! This is my point *exactly*. Bands have to do things that they
would'nt normally do to make it in the "business". This inherent
quality of the music business almost totally nullifies the essence of
music's artistic roots and freedom of expression. However, most artists
play the game and release mainstream songs to appease the record
companies. In turn, they fill the rest of their albums with what they
want, so maybe it's not so bad. Everyone's got to play the game.

>if their is anyone out their who is in the record business and has more
>to say or would like to correct me, please do so.

I've been involved in producing an album for a local band as well as
some of my own stuff. When I was in the studio with these guy's, we had
definitive arguments with the head producer who was pressuring the band
to change some of their songs in order to be more 'radio friendly'. i.e.
shorten the length of the songs, remove a few profanitites, extend
choruses, etc. For a band starting out, you are alomst forced to
compromise your art in order to fit the business.

>this is merely an attempt to bring others' logic and

Good points and thanks for the discussion. ;-)

Subject: Soundgarden in Italy

Hi SOMMSters! This is the first time I write in, and I beg you to
forgive me for my...uhm...ehm... shitty English (wow! this new
vocabulary includes also vulgar words!).I attended SG concert in Italy
and I'm looking someone that really can understand how FANTASTIC it
was: so I thought I needed a pure 100% SG fan! Captain, the situation
is critical. Here in my country they confuse Soundgarden with Fool's
Garden, the only song they know is BHS and a little Spoonman ("cool!
there are spoons in the background! What a pretty song! I'll go buy
the single!"), DOTU is practically super- UNKNOWN.Therefore I was not
so surprised to see only three-four thousands people in Casalecchio
(where the concert took place on the 25th of September), with three
guys on four wearing BHS t-shirts. That day gave a new meaning to the
word "rainy": the sunny Italy had suddenly turned into England! I
stood five hours in front of the gates, waiting (for the sun), no
umbrellas, no shelter, clean sparks diving down, a shitty sandwich in
my hands, I was just thinking it was the end when the gates opened,
allowing me to pulverize the 100m record and finally getting in front
of the stage. After the parenthesis of Moby and Eleven (that I didn't
like too much), SG invaded the stage.Kim assumed his typical "statue-
like" position and Ben, strangely, too ( the stage was REALLY REALLY
REALLY small). When I heard Spoonman's main riff I found myself in
heaven...Chris didn't sing the word "spoonman!" after Ben's small
vocal task and let the audience do it for him."Searching.." followed,
then a powerful "Let me drown"."Pretty noose" was fantastic (perhaps
Chris sang it a little low, but at that moment I didn't know what
would have come next...).After "Burden in my hand", Chris stopped the
concert because the crowd was becoming too...intense."Hey, you are
crushing people down here, you are killing people!"he said, but no one
understood him."The concert will not go on until you've gone
backwards!"(I think he said this).Five minutes of silence followed,
with Ben sitting on an Amp smoking a cigar, Kim and Chris staring at
us perfectly motionless.I thought the concert would end in a bad way
like the year before, when in Reggio Emilia(near Casalecchio) Ben
started arguing with the audience and threw his bass on their
(dick)-heads.Fortunately we got back and the concert went on with "My
wave", "Ty Cobb","An unkind","Fell on black days"(my favourite SG song
ever).Then a song no one recognized(was it helter-skelter?)that
dissolved in a moving "Boot camp".With no pause followed "Rusty
cage","BHS"( and an audio-cassette thrown by some idiot hit him right
in the head, but he went on singing like nothing had
happened),"Outshined","Dusty"(I didn't like the album version because
i thought it wasn't enough powerful, but I really enjoyed how they
played it during the concert)."BUTOW" was the best
moment,"Kickstand","Slaves & Bulldozers"(I hoped for the "Alive"
intrusion but my wishes were not satisfied), "Drawing flies". After a
short pause, they went back to throw us "Never the machine
forever"(what the hell does it mean, if it isn't an anti-computer
song? Please answer me!) that the audience didn't appreciate too
much, like all the other DOTU songs). And finally "JESUS CHRIST
POSE"!.I thought that Chris was going to do a bad performance on this
one (after 15 songs and more than 1 hour of show).I've never been so
wrong! He destroyed our ears, their amps, everything. And in the end
(dunno if he has done this before, but I think so) he put his golden
gibson horizontally on the microphone pole forming a cross that he
lifted with one hand like a sword! .Ops..I wrote too much..But I was
feeling it!Excuse me again for any mistake. I AM SO PROUD TO BE A
SOUNDGARDEN FAN!.

I finished watching that Soundgarden bootleg video!! I am one happy little
Soundgarden camper!!! Granted, it was amateur, but under the circumstances
it was done well. It was nice and long, just the way I like it. (No pun
intended.) You could tell though that the cameraman was getting tired
towards the end. It really started showing in Slaves & Bulldozers. My
heart went out to him, but then again, so did my money!! :) Chris' vocals
were exceptional in my opinion. I think this was the first show they did
after the NY and MA shows were cancelled. No signs of any illness. It was
also nice to see them smiling (except for Ben) and really enjoying
themselves. That makes it so much more enjoyable for the fans too. After
seeing this video, I'm contented in knowing that they will probably be doing
this for many more years to come. This video doesn't offer any outstanding
breakthrough in film making, but I definitely think it's worth the money.

May Soundgarden be with you.

Hey List!

During my break...I've been catching up on my reading...below are some
excerpts from Guitar World, February 1997 (pg. 196)

In the article "100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time" sits 'our' boy Kim
Thayil, under the category of:

"They might be giants"

"When i discovered dropped-D tuning, I started experimenting and never
stopped." - K. Thayil

Although Kim Thayil regularly credits the Melvin's Buzz Osbourne with
pioneering the use of the dropped-D tuning in rock, it is the Soundgarden
guitarist who popularized the tuning and made it the signature sound of
grunge. Immortalized on such Soundgarden classics as _Badmotorfinger_ and
_Down on the Upside_ (1996), this simple procedure, in which the low E
string is tuned down to a D, has become almost as ubiquitous in rock guitar
as the power chord.

Equipment: guild s-1; Peavey VTM 120, Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier
Signature Song: "Rusty Cage", from Soundgarden, Badmotorfinger (A&M, 1994)
Classic Albums: Badmotorfinger

- ------------------------------------------------------------

I also found the "rock" horoscope for those of you with the good fortune :-)
to be born between January 20 - February 18 (Aquarius)

Happy Birthday Aquarians! Performances will be extra satisfying in
February; your fans will devour your bad-ass attitude and lovable
freakishness. Just make sure your wacky antics don't overshadow the rest of
the bands's work - or alienate potential listeners. Famous Aquarius: Eddie
Van Halen

- --------------------------------------------------------------

And to help explain my subject header...there was an advertisement for
Rockabilia...which is selling your typical rock merchandise...decals, caps,
patches, shirts, hair colouring etc.

Welp, for 4 dollars you can a "Hanging Air Fresheners" in a variety of
scents. One of the styles was Soundgarden! Hmmm....what scent would say
Soundgarden? The only choices I can think of... that say (smell) SG are...
oil, blood, pine, dog, roses, money, fresh cut grass, fresh snow, fall.
There is a valid reason for each one ;-) I just hope there isnt some joker
in the air freshener industry that would make a 'lemon' scent SG
freshener...that should be used for bands like STP and 'the Nirvana cover
band', Bush and... :-)

Heavy Rotation: Tool, "Tainted Love", "Wearing and Tearing", Rocket to

Subject: a weird cover

Hi everyone :) it's good to be back...

I'm sure my regular e-mailers are sick of hearing this by now, but I here I
go anyway...
People, forget about Cash.... the cover you have *got* to listen to is by
this NY based female duo 'Cibo Matto'. I'm sure some of you have heard this
cover before. They normally sing about food, but they also did a cover of
BHS, and it's pretty interesting; not only 'cos it's sung by a female, but
b/c it's in....... French :)
hehehe.... well almost everything. They didn't bother translating the words
'black hole sun' (I think it's pretty untranslatable)... the funny thing is,
when they sing the English part, they use this phony French accent :)))
The beginning sounds exactly like 'I'm a Walrus', and when she switches to
the chorus, the song changes key. I've tried to decipher the lyrics, but
it's really hard, 'cos they used some kind of echo effect. Basically she
sings about how beautiful the bhs is, and how wonderful it is, compared with
the rain (nothing about chasing it away).
There's no bass, no drums.... just a synthesizer.

It's available as a b-side on their single 'Birthday Cake'

But I'm trying to upload it........ (I stress *trying*)
I've been battling with the damn Sound Recorder since yesterday, but all it
will tape is..umm... me :)
So to those who have been nagging me about a pic of myself... I can give you
a charming soundclip of me swearing instead :)

logos! j/k.
~~i have a non-sg related question for any of you guitarists out there, i
am looking at this beautiful acoustic-electric Alverez guitar and it's list
price is $650, but this pawn shop is willing to sell it to me for $500. i
don't know much about guitars, and i'm wondering if it's worth the money.
~~~o.k, another question (semi-sg related), i have been trying to design a
tattoo that i plan to get around my 18th birthday next october... i want to
somehow incorperate the badmotorfinger sawblade cuz it's one of my favorite
designs... but i don't know what to do.  i've been thinking something like
having the blade be the middle of a sun (the round part) and having wavy
rays coming out of it.  but then again i still don't know.  any suggestions
are welcome.  i guess i have time to think about it (10 months).
o.k. goodbye for now.
