Um, I think I have that picture of Matt with his pants down and the rest
of the guys standing around with big goofy grins on their faces. Is
that the one you mean? Well, how many can there be? I can scan that.
In fact I was going to but forgot.

Shroom, should I send you a personal copy or just send it to Seth for
the web site, or both? Wish I had some naked ones to scan, but alas, I
just couldn't talk them into that when I was in Chicago. Maybe if the
weather had been just a little warmer...

A couple people mentioned this painter. I remember watching some
interview show like hard copy or something like that. Well this
painter would paint these incredible pieces while listening to music.
And the awesome thing about it was that he did it so fast. He'd paint
things like Jimi Hendrix or John Lennon. I forget his name but could
this be the same guy?

Ok, I too have just received my official Soundgarden Phone Card and I
wasn't even in the fan club. But that's pretty cool cuz I'm now a
member and it didn't even cost me. Cool early xmas present. One idea
on how they got everyone's address. If you've entered any contests on
the official site, they usually ask you all the info like address and
name.

And then Dena commented about the fan club selling the tee's for
cheaper than at the concerts. I could have also saved $15 bucks. What
a rip off.

HEY THERE, I HAVEN'T POSTED TO THE argh damnit caps.. Anyway, like I was
saying, I haven't posted in a bit but I had this really cool dream last
night :> Ok, well, tomorrow is my pal Johny's 16th birthday party, and
he's having three bands play: my band, as well as two other rather
famous bands from Poughkeepsie, Dissolve and Withdrawn. Well, I had a
dream that I was at this party and who the hell shows up but Soundgarden
and Jawbox :> And I'm all freaking out, saying What is going on here?!
I never see Kim or Chris or Ben, but I run into Matt and we're just
talking about the list and stuff :> He was a nice guy but he was pretty
short too, I remember that :> And I have a pencil and paper with me
but I forget to ask for his autograph (duh) heheh :> and it was just
weird, and Jawbox didn't play after all, which I was quite upset about
:> Uhh.. Merry Christmas... I got the '97 SG calendar... I haven't seen
it yet but a friend picked it up for me... I guess Chris is on every
page :> That just cracked me up :> Well, I'll shut up now. That's my
contribution for the month.

I'm on a PJ mailing list..and in that list WE do not talk bout stuff like
Eddie Vedder is God or something crap like that...What we talk about inthere

Subject: The second Seattle Show

I don't know what to say except that the 2nd Seattle show was the best
SG show I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Phenomenal!!!
Incredible beyone words. Here are some of my personal favorite
highlights:
1) They played an *AWESOME* version of Head Down--UNBELIEVABLE
Towards the end Ben went behind the drum kit with Matt and joined him
in playing the drums. Kim did an excellent solo. WOW
2) During Slaves and Bulldozers they went into Me and My Monkey--too
cool!!!! Once again the boys f*cking ROCK!
3) They didn't play Room a Thousand Years Wide but they DID play
Nothing to Say!!! and Search and Destroy!!
4) During the end of JCP Chris stood on his guitar and played it with
his feet.
5) Kim did the play the guitar behind the head trick--Ben was in rare
form--I don't think I have EVER seen him smile so much.
It was crystal clear that our boys were having one hell of a great
time during the show. Ben and Kim were constantly joking around with
the crowd and eachother. Chris was mind blowing. Artis the
Spoonman is just incredible to watch. It was an *awesome* show!!
The Presidents of the U.S.A. and Pond opened for them again. I was
really impressed by them. It was a wonderful night and I wish I
could do it all over again!!! JEN

that is actually Chris according to him in an interview i heard...i think it

From: Caryn Rose <clr@nwlink.com>
Subject: seattle I & II

no full-blown review here, just some random thoughts i wanted to share...

- --i was meant to miss these shows because i took vacation last week. i
wanted to go *this* week, but the place i was going was closed, so i bit
the bullet and settled for only two sg shows this year and sold my
tickets. get home on saturday, first thing chris says to me is, 'the
soundgarden shows were cancelled, chris' voice went out, they're
rescheduled to *this* week'. there *is* a goddess ;-)

- --kudos to the list thug for his seat location choice. mercer arena is a
sucky venue, but these were the best possible seats in the place. i'll
never sit anywhere else for a mercer arena show. extra hugs to him and
baby thug for getting on line early each day.

i've been so distracted and so unfocused over the past few months and once
i'd given up the shows, i almost didn't 'feel' them. but the first night,
once they charged into 'searching' it felt like i'd come home. and now
i'm sorry i didn't go to chicago, NOT because i could have met the band
(of course that would have been cool) but because i needed to see & hear
them live to remind me why i like them so much! carolyn i think said
something weeks and weeks ago along these lines and she was right, the
music is all that matters. yes, i'm still fuckin' angry at ben, but they
aren't infallible -- they're just human beings.

there were these incredible, ethereal moments during these two nights,
times when the energy was completely focused and completely and uniquely
soundgarden, where i understood when people on those jesus channels talk
about 'opening your heart to jesus', because i felt like i was opening my
heart to soundgarden, as corny or i don't know what as that seems. i just
felt like i couldn't possibly connect with the music or the moment any
more than i was. just being open to the possibility and the energy and
the emotion. (does this make any sense???)

'search and destroy' was a dream come true for me. i know, it seems
silly, but i have been an iggy pop fan since, i dunno, 1978? and it means
a lot to me that a i band i love so much also loves music that i love so
much...it's like i understand it at the same level, i dunno, kind of how i
feel about the eddie vedder/pete townshend connection...something we have
identically in common despite the fact we don't even know each other, it's
something we can connect through...

i am now dedicating myself to becoming a kim thayil groupie. i don't
know, these last two nights i spent most of my binoculars time just
watching kim's hands on the guitar. (is that green guild his main guitar?
does someone have any stats on this? i once knew someone who could tell
what song pearl jam were about to play by what guitar stone was using...).
seriously, though, i thought his work was EXCEPTIONAL. and how they ended
the shows with kim making feedback on top of his amps, back to us, body
arched, hand coming up behind him to make the heavy metal devil symbol,
then how he would go side-stage and come out with his beer and salute us
all. ;-) the second night, chris also joined in on the feedback, i
climbed on top of a chair arm to watch, he climbed up on the drum riser,
turned the guitar upside-down and stepped on it, rocking back and forth,
to make his feedback contribution... ending by snapping the head off of
the guitar (les paul)...

my other thought was about chris' voice, how there were moments during
these shows where it felt like his voice was just entering my body and
wrapping itself around my heart. not in a romantic or sexual way *at
all*, i was just so moved by the qualities in his voice, especially during
'searching' or 'hands all over', or especially 'nothing to say'. i wanted
to fuckin' cry during 'nothing to say' from the sheer joy of it all.

what else. the pearl jam guys were at the show on tuesday (this from a
confirmed source who works at silver mgmt), hence the reason the damn
presidents name-checked them every six seconds.

ryan went and checked the set list yesterday so we knew that 'search &
destroy' was gonna be followed by 'nothing to say'. we had called seth on
my cell phone earlier and i called him during "s&d" but of course it was
so fucking LOUD i have no idea if he picked up or not. ;-( i checked it
after "s&d" and it was disconnected. SETH????! ;-)

both nights an artist created these amazing oil paintings of the band
onstage. i grabbed him backstage after tuesday's show and asked him if he
was selling, which he was (but chris has first dibs, apparently). got his
card -- we'll see what happens...

aaron had a big KTMS sign last night (though he couldn't fit the whole
address on the sign so it just said 'somms@mit.' underneath it). no idea
if they saw it, but i think ted (matt's roadie) did...

other highlight was me throwing water at the stupid hootchie doing an
interpretive dance to 'pretty noose' who ended up sitting on the barrier
in front of us. chris wanted to bring tomatoes the next night. ;-)

finally, i was really touched by erin haley's gesture of giving us the
after-show passes, totally unexpected (and i mean *totally), we were just
happy to wave 'hi' to her. ;-) </me waves again> nice hat, erin. ;-) it
was fun to be there and hang out and have soundgarden buy *us* something
(free drinks and leftover nachos! candy canes and candy kisses). and
ryan got to talk to artis!

I found this really cool live bootleg PJ cd and the best part was the
last two songs were by Soundgarden. It said a song previously
unreleased (which turned out to be Blind Dogs) and Fell on Black Days.
Fell on Black Days was actually the original demo version and it kicked
some major ass with CC screaming at the end "I Fell On" four times.
Some really good stuff. The two SG songs beat the crap out of the
twelve PJ songs on the CD (and I like PJ). Good Deal!!!!!

It sounds like this guy I used to see on television. I remember I saw a
Hendrix video once and he painted Hendrix on a wall with his bare hands.
He also did some painting on commercials for Woodstock '94. The guy is
kinda scruffy looking, and I think he has some salt-and-pepper hair. Any
comments, Caryn?(am I close?) It would be extremely cool if seth or anyone
else could get his painted version of chris on the net!

i've got his card in my leather jacket at home and i'll go check. i *did*
ask him a bunch of questions (learning my schmoozing technique from The
List Thug), did sg ask him or vice versa (he's been asking them for three
years to let him do this), who else has he done (no pearl jam, but he
*has* done mad season).

what was cool is that he was *really* into the show too, you could see him
banging his head along to the music while he painted. last night someone
was videotaping him as he painted.

I just ran the video and paused it a few times and I couldn't tell who had a
stand in. Matt would be the easiest I suppose as he is the least 'distinctive'.

Hey, don't flame me, Matt lovers :-)- it's just Ben is so tall, Kim has that
hair and Chris...well, I have spent many a happy hour studying Chris in
*great* detail :-) There's just one very short part where the camera closes
on on Ben and Matt's backs and Matt's hair doesn't look quite right, so
maybe that's it?

Though I did notice earlier in the video that Ben seemed to stumble a couple
of times, like when he and Chris and Kim were all walking in line down the
dune and silhoutted against the sky, so I wondered if he had twisted his
ankle or something and maybe the jet scene was the last thing they shot so
Ben had a stand in.

I think we should be told! :-)

Talking of videos, in the Musician article that's just appeared on the web
page, the band refer to an alternative version of Outshined which was much
better, in their opinion, than the one that got released. Does anyone know

I disagree. Sure they're popular, but hardly "Mainstream" popular. Its
kind of like the Grateful Dead. They sold out every concert they played
and were a part of this whole counterculture type thing, but they

I see your point Kathy. The problem arises with interpretations of
"mainstream", which is hard to define and relatively subjective. I
totally agree with your Greatful Dead analogy which makes a good point.
Maybe SG is not completely "mainstream" as I had said... but I do think
that their current music and social perception is much more mainstream.
I mean, many of the DOTU songs are much more radio/MTV freindly and, at
least around here, they are in *heavy* rotation on the cheesy
alterna-pop radio. Soundgarden finally perform on SNL and are mentioned
on cheezy shows such as 'Suddenly Susan'. However, I suspect that the
mainstream has evolved more to Soundgarden rather than Soundgarden
evolving to the mainstream... or maybe a little of both... after all,
the guys are not as young and full of rebellion as they used to be.
Anyhow, good points Kathy.
