Hi Taylor,

You'd be surprise how many of us over 40+ love SG! (I'm 42.) Some my
friends think that I'm pretty twisted and going through some temporary faze.
This love for SG has been going on since the beginning. Oh well, you can't
help what you love.

Usually the public relations department arranges all the publicity for a
singer, group or an actor. We all know that you need publicity to sell
records, movies, books etc. I'm sure that Chris wasn't "forced" to pose for
those photos but you have to admit it got a lot more people to notice him.
Maybe by seeing Chris on the cover of Details and getting past how "cute" he
is someone might discover their music.

Take care,

Lynne

To me its impossible to compare SG albums (as far as which is "best")
because they are all so entirely different from each other. This
question probably comes up after every album, and with the release of
each album some people will be disappointed while others will love it.
Personally I was disappointed by SU, but now I like most of it - DOTU is
my favorite though. However, I would never say that SU was a "bad" album
- - simply that it isn't one of my favorites. If I don't like their next
album I'll just wait for the one after that. There's always good I can
find, even if I don't particularly like an album, probably because I am
completely enthralled by Chris' lyrics. So, if you don't like a new SG
album, just wait for the next one (kind of like Chicago weather, huh
Chicago folks?).

After spending about 3 days on the Tool list, I really appreciate the
sanctity of this SG list. If you ever want to be inundated with flames
and non-sensical crap (besides a few interesting song interpretations),
check it out... Ughh.
On to my SG content/opinion ->

Soundgarden is *completely* mainstream. Although people in the office
may not recognize Chris Cornell upon mention, that says nothing about
SG's huge mainstream popularity with the young-adult generaion. Of
course, if you ask your average 30 - 35 year old, they will not
immediately recognize SG or Cornell. This is because, in that time
frame, SG was still underground and Cornell was still hollering and
flailing in his Chuck Taylor's rather than being played in heavy
rotation on MTV and alterna-pop radio.... and about the 'heroin look', I
was only referring to the way Cornell was portrayed in Details.
Honestly, I can't believe Cornell did that shoot. With all of his
previous glam bashing talk, he has turned right around and done a
totally glam photo shoot. I know we're all human, but really Chris...

Taylor

SOUNDGARDEN'S EDGY LYRICS BLEAK AND STILL BEAUTIFUL

Kings of the scene: Other Seattle bands have fallen by the wayside,
but Soundgarden just keeps blooming.

When the Seattle rock band Soundgarden released "Superunknown," in
1994, it seemed a fitting title for a band that had gained notoriety
but never reached the plateau of fame that marked fellow Seattle
alternative rockers Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

But the band wouldn't remain unknown for long. Fueled by the
slow-building success of 1991's "Badmotorfinger," "Superunknown debuted
at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and has sold more than five million
copies in the United States alone.

Meanwhile, Nirvana has disbanded and Pearl Jam's infamous ticketing and
touring problems have decreased their popularity, making Soundgarden's
members arguably the kings of the Seattle music scene.

Soundgarden plays two hometown concerts Tuesday and Wednesday at the
Mercer Arena. The shows follow the release of a much-awaited follow-up
album, "Down on the Upside," and are most likely sold out. <yes, they are!>

It's easy to see where the fascination with Soundgarden comes from.
"Down on the Upside," like "Superunknown," is a chameleon-like display
of the band's many styles. Though most often compared with Black
Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, the band also can remind one of classic rock
and mainstream pop with a haunting edge.

The edge comes from lead singer Chris Cornell's voice, a deep, loud
vocal sound that is reminiscent of a bottomless, black pool. Cornell
can croon softly or scream loudly, all with seemingly effortless ease
and staying power. Kim Thayil, the most recognizable of the band
members with his nearly waist-length mane of thick black hair, adds
distinctive guitar noodling that varies in weight and is just
repetitive enough to be catchy without being boring. Bassist Ben
Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron add more layers of sound to complete
the band's heavy, multi-faceted alternative rock.

The band's lyrics are bleak ("Zero Chance") to suicidal ("Tighter and
Tighter"), and yet there is still something beautiful in them. And
there is also the sense that no matter how low he goes, songwriter
Cornell cannot let go of his survival instinct. On "Blow Up the
Outside World," a ballad that turns into a heavy metal-tinged
alternative rock anthem and back again, he sings:

"Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try/Nothing is closing
my eyes/Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight/And nothing
seems to break me/No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at
all/Not one for giving up though not invincible I know."

Okay--I often times bite my tongue and just let things pass, but I've
really, REALLY had it with the Gavin/Bush comments. Okay, so
many/most of you don't like them. Great fine. That is your personal
opinion and that is what is SO WONDERFUL about music.....there are
different styles out there that appeal to different people. But
really, last time I checked, I don't believe that anyone on the list
has personally spoken with Gavin or Bush and therefore I find it
really sad that people would be jumping on the bandwagon and going
off on them PERSONALLY when you don't even know them. SO they don't like
SG, well that is their own opinion, let it be. It doesn't make them less
of a person or a band. I read an article where our beloved Kim said
he hates Europe--so he doesn't like it....are we going to go off on
him and say he's a dumbshit for not liking Europe???? I don't think
so. So why do we find the need to go off on Gavin/Bush for their
personal opinions?? Are they not as valid because they don't agree
with you and go against SG?
Once again, I don't think so. I happen to like Bush (so hate me)...I may
not find them to be the most creative band I've heard, but I do enjoy
listening to their music. Now....enough already, PLEASE!!!!! Let's
get on with more important things--like SOUNDGARDEN!!! Thanks for

Subject: first impressions.....

Someone asked about first SG impressions. Well, here goes:

First time I heard of Soundgarden was about 1993-4 pre-Superunknown. My
friend had the BMF album (yes all you teenie boppers, an album) which I
liked, and had seen the JCP video on MTV (back when MTV was still pretty
good) you know, Chris is climbing that chain wall thing? I remember thinking
they were either mexican or indian. I didnt think Chris was attractive 1
iota. Then SU came out and really really loved it in an almost over-the-edge
bizzare kinda way. Then I had to fuel this addiction with knowledge...Read
everything. (I was wrong, Chris is REALLY cute). Became a "fan". (I hate
that word) Started sending the Soundgarden fan club these loving, intensly
decorated, but really stupid letters. When they wrote back I was hooked.
(picture hook in the lip reeling it in)

This is my SG collection in order:
1. Superunknown tape
2. Temple of the Dog tape
3. New Metal Crown book
4. Singles movie
5. Down on the Upside tape, album, cd
6. Badmotorfinger tape, cd
7. Screaming Life tape (I have a cassette tape walkman ok?)
8. Ultramega OK cd
9. Singles soundtrack cd for Seasons
10.Import calender (on order)
11.MotorVision (on order)
12.Screaming Life/Live (whatever) on order.

Then got a computer (insert between Temple and Upside) and continued
searching around for Soundgarden stuff. Found KOTS on there. Then I found
Seth's page, and SOMMS!!!! Oh happy day to find you guys. Now to only see
SG live and life will be complete.

Wasnt that exciting? Hey........WAKE UP!

Is my SG collection bigger than yours??? They really put out a shit load of
income earning stuff didnt they? Well, thats why they're millionaires and
I'm poor.

Hi again. Call me stupid but I don't understand how a photo shoot with
Details = mainstream or "glam rock". Granted, I've never seen (or noticed
anyway), that mag before but I don't think Chris is selling out because he
appeared on the cover. I mean he's done a lot of photo shoots and I just
don't see how this is any different.

As for SG being mainstream - - I knew they had arrived on the mainstream
when my uncle remarked, "Yeah, I like some of their songs". <Ughh!

I know we're all human, but really Chris...

this is a little something I picked off microsoft's music-news:

"speaking of soundgarden, tln correspondent jennie ruggles reports
that kim thayil, soundgarden's guitarist, has been in the glow after he
reaed a _mojo_ interview with peter green, fleetwood mac's original
guitarist, slagging britpop bands like oasis and suede, but praising
soundgarden.

	"that's from a god guitarist - jimmy page's favourite guitarist, a
guy who went crazy and threw away his royalty checks! here he is slamming
countrymen's bands, but he liked us!" enthused thayil.

but not everyone agrees with green. reviews of soundgarden's
stateside shows have been less than stellar, accusing the "emo-metal" band
of losing its edge by toning down its original sound to appeal to
mainstream tastes. one critic in oakland, ca, went so far as to say that
the show in his fair city "reeked of a sellout"."

(me again) anyone from oakland (or any other show) want to
confirm this?

this is from _the guitar magazine_, dec. '96:

And yes, he also predominantly solos in altered tuning. To his
amazement, he still gets asked about that by his fans... including Chris
Cornell.

"Sometime while we were recording Superunknown, Chris said, 'But
you solo in regular tuning, right?'" Thayil guffaws. "I just said, 'Look,
we play shows together don't we? What do you think I do live? Tune the
guitar up for every solo when you're not looking!?'"

okay, this is something i noticed also today...

in the song heartfist, chris sings "and she hit me with a hand of
broken nails..." a few times.
in the song rusty cage, chris sings "and hit me with a hand of
broken nails..." but only once <doh>.
so now i'm trying to figure out why these 2 songs have the same line..
. any suggestions? anyone else notice this?

oh, and i've almost got the guitar music worked out for Mind Riot. if
i ever get around to writing it down instead of just knowing what to

I know this is really late, but I've got to comment on the whole
Bush discussion. If you really want to tell whether they're posers or
imagine what they would have done if they had formed in the 80s. Do you
think they'd still be a grunge rock band, or do you think they would have
hopped on the pop metal bandwagon with everyone else? Personally, I
have a hard time imagining Gavin Rossdale buying a Green River record,
or a Nirvana record if they hadn't been popular. Further evidence,
Gavin is dating Gwen from No Doubt, one of the biggest poser alternative
rock bands. This isn't debatable either because I saw a tape of No
Doubt from back in the 80s. They were your typical pop band. Obviously
they jumped onto the alt. rock bandwagon when they saw they could
make money that way. Sure, Alice In Chains started out as a pop metal
band (called Diamond Lie) but they switched over to grunge BEFORE it
was popular.
By the way, I just saw the video for Blow Up The Outside World.
Wow, it rocks. I love the imagery used in it. This is the best Soundgarden
video ever.
But I noticed that Chris's arms in the video are spread out, in
a Jesus Christ Pose ("Arms held out, like you've been carryin' a load!")
If Chris dislikes Christ Poses so much, why does he take up one in
this video? Is it an image symbolizing the torture imposed on him by
others?
Does anyone have Susan Silver's email address or snail mail addie? I need
to schedule an interview with one of her clients.
By the way, Soundgarden could whup Bush easily in a fight. Just look at
Bush. Ben himself could take all of them out without breaking a sweat. Later,

Subject: MTV plays Santa

Christmas came early for me this year - MTV Europe are playing BUTOW
(uncensored)after all! And thanks to some quick thinking from my long
suffering partner, Trev, I got it on tape!!! What *was* all the fuss about?

It was shown on Headbangers' Ball after presenter Vanessa Warwick 'made a
stand' (in Kerrang's words) "It's probably my favourite song on the DOTU
album; the video is great - very different for Soundgarden. I'm glad we have
been able to show it."

MTV seem to be backpeddling now, saying they were merely worried that the
ITC (our TV watchdogs) would come down on them if they played it. Then last
night I switched on at around 7.00pm and it was playing again. Soundgarden
will have their Christmas No 1 yet :-)))

DOTU also got into both Metal Hammer's and Kerrang's Top Ten albums of the
year (along with Screaming Trees and Pearl Jam) - proof that not everyone
this side of the pond has succumbed to the dubious charms of Oasis! :-)

Happy hols to everyone on this list.

Subject: Add me to the Somms owners, and I have a problem......

Hi guys,

Firstly, thanks to DeeDee, I now am a proud owner of a Somms disk. =
Geoff (? I think it's you?), you can add me to your list now! :-)

Now, my problem. Soundgarden is not appearing separately in Adelaide, =
my state - instead they are only doing the Big Day Out here (which, =
incidentally, Rocket From the Crypt will be at also, I found out =
yesterday). Of course I'm going to the BDO. So because I'd rather see =
SG for more than just the 45 minutes they'll be allotted at the BDO, I =
had decided to make the big trip to Melbourne to see Soundgarden (16 =
hours driving in all, there and back). Well, yesterday I rang BASS, and =
the only tickets I can get are seating only, behind the stage. It's =
basically hearing room only - with no view of the stage AT ALL. =20

What do you think? Is it worth it? Or should I just be content to see =
them in Adelaide at the Big Day Out? Has anyone here gone to an SG =
concert with shitty seats and still enjoyed themselves? Seats! I want =
to STAND, and boogy my heart out! :-$

Other than Hando or Greg, who I've already begged, can ANYONE out there =
in the Land of Oz get me tickets to this concert that are better than =
the ones they have left for sale?? Anyone?????

I got up feeling so down.......Soundgarden
