Hey all,

Whoah! way too long since last post ( this time of year I guess )
You all well and happy? Glad to hear it.

Just a line to say I'm unsubbing over Christmas,
but will resub before the SG Oz shows in Jan.
Taking much needed Yuletide R'n'R in South Australia.
Hoping wherever you are you have a great Christmas and New Year.
To those Oz sommsters going to the Melbourne Big Day Out and the
SG solo show at Festival Hall ( you still coming down Stephen?? )
drop me a line and we'll try to catch up.

Oh yeah, briefly caught the BUTOW video the other night ( yeah, I know,
call me slow ) - not too bad at all.

Take it easy, folks

Since Soundgarden have quite a few music videos out now, does anyone know

Hi.
can't remember when was the last time i posted something. anyway.
i was checking through some old papers i had in the last drawer of my desk
and found a torn xerox copy of an article on soundgarden. i remember i took
it from a RIP special on "new" bands (from 1989 i think). each band had a
page with a picture and 2 or 3 paragraphs about them. it included
soundgarden (picture with Jason Everman who had just joined the band),
mother love bone, mind funk (Everman later joined them) and many others. i
would post the whole thing but i'm missing half of the last paragraph (i
only have the first 3 or 4 words of each line). anyway, this is how the
article introduces the band to RIP readers who probably hadn't heard about
soundgarden until then (this is also related to the soundgarden/led zeppelin
thread):
"If you took Led Zeppelin and early Black Sabbath, gave them
college/art-school educations, then tossed them in a Seattle garage, you'd
have Soundgarden. Sort of."
anyway, finding this reminded me of the first time i ever saw the name
soundgarden in a magazine. it was on a mag called "metalshop" (or something
like that) i picked up when i was up in the US on Dec 1989. it listed the
Top 10 albums of 1989 and Louder than Love was 8th. I remember King's X's
"Gretchen goes to Nebraska" was first and Sepultura's "Beneath the Remains"
was 3rd or 4th. i thought the mag was pretty cool because they didn't
include all the glam buttrock bands that everyone else listed in their Top
10s. There was also a great SG pic. when i got back home (Lima, Peru) i got
LTL and, after a few listens to adapt my mind to songs like "ugly truth",
"power trip", "no wrong no right", it became my favourite album and
soundgarden my favourite band.
If any of you have interesting stories on how you got hooked to SG i'd sure
like to hear them.

enrique.

Hey gang,

As you have all heard by now the Seattle shows were cancelled and we did not
get to see them in the hometown. <sniff>

But God we had a great fucking time anyway!

JEN & BONNIE are goddesses!

The whole trip could have been for bust but these two beautiful women showed
me and my friend Bill around the city for not one, not two, BUT THREE ENTIRE
DAYS. God I would have been more than grateful for just one but everynight
when we said our farewells they "offered" to come get us again the next day.
It was so cool! and having never been to Seattle, they showed us stuff that
we never would have been able to see if we were just wandering tourists
("The" Sound Garden for one)

And to top it all off JEN (who by the way is a jewel of angelic beauty &
class) was deathly ill the whole time but went totally out of her way to keep
us company while we were there. I know I touted her virtues when she got my
Tix to the show for me, but the extent to which she went for us, I LOVE HER
NOW & AM FOREVER INDEBTED.

Thanks SIREN GIRL!!!!! I can't wait til I get to see you again in the Spring!

We also met a lot of SOMMSters past and present Ryan (thugs little bro, Thug
was down and out with the flu I'll make it a priority to meet you next time
Sheriff), Andrea, & Chris. & I have never been so warmly greeted by people
who had never met me in my life!!!!!!!!!

Then, I recieved all of your condolences and talked to many more of you at
length Shroom & Dena: love ya, can't wait to meet cha!

All of this added up PROVES that SOMMS people are the finest and most
ass-kicking group of people in the world!!!!!

Sure the band didn't play & I wanted to cut my throat initially, but the
SOMMS people picked up the ball and turned what could have been a bad scene
into the greatest vacation of my life!

Thankx guys

Lance

Hola Gentes,

Anyway, on the subject of Soundgarden becoming a very commercial band, I have
heard many sound clips all over the TV. On Friday, I heard a clip of BHS on
Dateline NBC. It may be for the reason SG has become so big, but I know it
bothers some people. My opinion, I like the idea, but as long as they don't
let the success go to their heads(which I doubt will happen)

A good idea i had today....SOMMS bumper stickers. I think we should show our
SOMMS pride. I know I have. I drew the Badmotorfinger wheel on the
blackboard in the band room at the high school, and next to it I put
"SOMMSters RULE!!!!" no one understood it, but hey. I might just be the
youngest on this list, but I'd save the sticker 'till I get my first car.

Well, this is for anyone that actually cares to read my posts: I thought I'd
say, Merry Chris-tmas and a Happy New Year, now, since I'm sending out my
cards today.

yep, they're the same songs. I don't know if the little blurb
before 'get on the snake' is from the video, since I haven't watched it in
quite awhile, but it's a good bet that it is.

> As for A Splice Of Spacejam, it is quite good. It's just a jam session as a
> lot of people expected, but Soundgarden sure know how to jam! It's got a
> cool bass part in it, and the guitars just sort of go all over the place,

I know I've already said this before, but I still don't like this
track. as much as there is going on musically in the song, it is less
interesting to me than the first of its type ('jerry garcia's finger') or
even motorcycle loop, which has an element of humour. with the sheer
volume of material that each member of the band writes, it is a bit
disappointing that we (at least in australia, from all reports) get
shackled not only with audio versions of songs from videos we in all
probability own, but we get an instrumental track that already appeared on
the cd+!

speaking of the cd+, I finally got a new computer at home, and the
alive in the superunknown installed without a hitch. to the chagrin of
some listers, I didn't even have to load the extra disk of corel drivers,
so I was happy about that.

so thanks to a certain lister who has had too many dollar bills in
his wallet in the past, I have now viewed almost all there is to view on
the cd+. I have kind of mixed feelings about it. some of the stuff is
cool, but to me it seems to have a fairly limited range, and certainly has
a short expiration date.

cool stuff: the video section is cool, if only that I get to see
the video for 'the day I tried to live' (which was not released here).
the "hidden" video of 'kickstand' is good, as are the two videos of artis
doing his thing. I like the animated bmf wheel, but there is this other
weird screaming face that I don't understand the significance of. the
computer-generated video for 'superunknown' is also cool; I especially
like the live video of ben and matt playing drums together. other things
of note - the interview with the band concerning the album _superunknown_,
the little bhs face that pages through the photo collage and the picture
of chris with his finger up his nose. oddly enough, that was an
interesting image :)

uncool/dull stuff that could have been left off with no hassle or
even replaced: the audio tracks are of no import to me, since I already
have them (I know that is no fault of the makers, but it is a useless
section for me); and the various images that play some instrumental noise
are kind of silly, unless you can make a song out of that one page.

btw, can someone tell me where the computer game is? even though
I'm on holidays, I'm yet to find it :)

Chris Cornell = one of the greatest "rock" singers of all time
Chris Cornell = very talented songwriter
Chris Cornell = lyrical genius (sort of)
Chris Cornell = a breath of fresh air for those of us who hate pompous,
arrogant, lame-ass frontmen like Gavin Rossdale and Eddie Vedder (among
many others)

Chris Cornell isn't = sporting this so-called "heroin look". As people
get older, they stop worrying about being big muscle-bound jerkoffs.
Some, like Rollins, enjoy working out day in and day out to keep big. I
think Cornell is just maturing. He doesn't need to be all pumped up.

That's just my own thoughts on the subject.

By the way, that Gavin Rossdale piece of shit is dating Gwen from No
Doubt. How the hell can she stand him?? I just can't see it. She sings
about things that matter. Rossdale just spews whatever comes to mind.
"Warm sun feed me up, I'm leery loaded up." WTF??? Someone pay for him
to take some sort of writing course!

that's all.

> yes, it's on fresh deadly rarities along with other cool covers

that may be true, but instead of supporting unauthorized, for-profit
collections of material that soundgarden has already officially
released, it might be better to try to find an authorized recording of
the song. sg's cover of "come together" can be found on the following:

	- "hands all over" promo cd/12", 1990
	- "hands all over" UK CD/10", 1990
	- loudest love, Japanese CD, 1990
	- foreshocks, promo CD, 1994

you're probably better off finding one of the above than buying fresh
deadly rarities anyway: i picked up the loudest love cd last year for
$12, and i'm sure the boot costs a whole lot more.

Subject: and the candle was burning yesterday...

	just a couple of notes:

I received two taped shows from steve (thank you muchly) last
week, and both are *excellent*. one was of the lolla show in syracuse,
which seems to be a fairly standard setlist and performance. now I know
what bhs sounds like solo, and it sounds pretty good. I think chris is
able to convey more emotion in that setting during the song. as much as I
like big guitars, his voice has a certain quality that would be
interesting to hear in an "unplugged" performance. I don't think the
acoustic version of 'like suicide' is any indication of his worthiness in
this area. the rest of it wasn't mindblowing, but more than musically
sound and was of good enough quality to make it worthwhile.

the second tape was one I have been waiting for for quite awhile.
the reading show of 1995 is an absolute killer. it includes the only
version I know of 'fourth of july' (which *rocks* and should be performed
at all their shows), a wonderful version of 'head down', a great cover of
'waiting for the sun' and 'I want you', an *amazing* finale (it would have
been interesting to hear it with lyrics, though). but most importantly,
towards the end of the show, the band unveils one of its newest songs -
'christi'.

ladies and gentlemen, this song blew my socks off. let us all
cross our fingers that it makes it onto the next record (which we could
have before the end of next year from the sounds of things). in drum!
magazine, matt is quoted as saying that 'christi' is one of his favourite
soundgarden songs, and that he hopes chris can get the lyrics fully
together for inclusion on the next record. overall, the lyrics on the
reading version are very hard to decipher, but the final line "you're
gonna die without me" is repeated a couple of thunderous times and comes
across *very* clearly. this is a very powerful song, and one that all
listers should endeavour to hear.

and in this individual case, I don't mind if they save it for the
next album. it deserves to be more than a b-side.

Vans Song (skank for brains)

you're just like a club fag wearing Doc Martens
get a pair of chukas or some checkerboard slip-ons
worship Jeff Spicoli not Chris Cornell,
get a pair of vans or god'll send you to hell
you think doc martens are the coolest invention
since someone sliced a loaf of bread in someone else's kitchen
the plain truth is is that you just plain suck
so why should i tell you not to waste 100 bucks?
vans in my head,
vans on my feet,
my sole is on the ground
when i'm walkin down the street
don't wear no doc martens, can't wear no birkenstocks
just a crummy old pair of chuka boots
and a smelly old pair of socks
if you wanna wear em you don't have to ride a skateboard
you can even wear em with a pair of old cords
someone'll probably tell you that they're not in trend
just tell em that's the reason why you don't have any friends
well i don't wanna hear about alternative footwear
