Subject: Re: BUTOW single available

I've had the BUTOW single for almost a month now. I haven't noticed anyone
talk about it yet (maybe I've just been ignorant) so I thought I may as well.

I don't have Louder Than Live so I don't know if Gun and Get On The Snake
are the same from this single as the video. At the start of Get On The Snake
Chris says that this is a song from a movie that nobody saw (I must admit I
never saw it). Maybe that's a clue. They play it so well, Gun sounds so cool
when it is slowed down like that.

As for A Splice Of Spacejam, it is quite good. It's just a jam session as a
lot of people expected, but Soundgarden sure know how to jam! It's got a
cool bass part in it, and the guitars just sort of go all over the place,
without having a main riff. It obviously has nothing to do with the movie
Spacejam (especially considering what Chris said at the Chicago concert
about Michael Jordan) and is called so because it was recorded at Space Studio.

The cover of the single is cool, with the worm (some sort of green grub
thingy) poking through the tomato. And on the back about 4 of them poking
through it and the tomato is all ruined. It looks cool.

Well that's about all there is to say. Oh yeah, I've seen the BUTOW clip a
few times now and it is a really great clip aint it! That brain drainer
thing reminds me of a similar device on the movie 'Flash Gordon' where all
of this guys memories are being sapped from him and you can see them up on a
screen like on the clip.

Cya people!

Hey fellow SG freaks,

I was wondering if anybody has seen the latest Rolling Stone with Pamela Lee,
and Beavis & Butthead on the cover. This issue reviewed several of the
albums released over the past year. SG got a less than stellar review of
DOTU, saying that the band was trying too hard to be artistic or something to
that effect. Screaming Trees, however, got an awesome review for their
release of "Dust." I have to say that Screaming Trees is one of my most
favorite bands of all times, under SG of course, (I may get hate mail for
saying this) but I think I have to agree with Rolling Stone on this one. I
don't normally agree with almost all reviews that Rolling Stone does.
SuperUnknown, I think has been there pinacle record to date, while BMF
remains to be my favorite, following behind with Superunknown, then Louder
than Love, then DOTU, then UMOK. Sorry to all those folks who disagree.
Even though "Dust" by Screaming Trees is a great album, I don't think it's
their best either. "Uncle Anesthesia" far surpasses any other album (CC
playing recorder and singing background on "Lay Your Head Down").

Nice page by shroomy, I hope you liked the pics I sent ya. You are a mad
page maker.

Subject: RE: All of this originality conflict

I have just one thing to say about "rip-off" music. (Yeah, right).
Soundgarden, just like every other band on earth, heard music before
they ever tried to write music. All music is the product of the
influence of all other music on a musician. Music is a process of
evolution, and very rarely are there distinct leaps in this evolution
(i.e. when classical music started using the full orchestra, jazz music,
and Elvis, believe it or not). Although, ALL MUSIC has roots in the
previous music that the author heard. Saying that someone has to put out
COMPLETELY ORIGINAL music all the time is like saying that they had to
write something without any other influence, which would mean they would
have to stand on stage silent.

Well, I have most of the singles, most of which have been limited edition...
Like the JSP DIGIPAK CD, the two Rusty Cage DIGIPAK CDS limited to 5000
each... The Outshined singles were limited edition, can't remember if the
DIGIPAK version was 5000 or not... I've also picked up some limited edition
vinyl, like Room a Thousand Years Wide/HIV Baby... Etched Loud Love 12"...
JCP picture 7"... the numbered 7"s from DOTU... oh yeah, and the clear vinyl
version of DOTU which is limited to 5000....

Most of these I bought either when they came out, or at record fairs here in
Glasgow.... There's usually one every three months or so and a HUGE one in
the SECC about twice a year.... else I pick up some stuff at second hand
record stores.... although not very often!

I only have one bootleg.... It's Ugly Flowers which is an early show with
Hiro, I think it's 1989, can't remember though.... it's pretty good... they
don't play those songs anymore.... I see a few at record fairs... but I'm not
too interested... I'd rather buy Fresh Deadly Rarites, or Stolen Prayers but
I've NEVER seen them....

But what I really need is Louder Than Live and SOMMS.... I've never *EVER*
seen copies of these in the UK.... sigh...

Hey List

I've recieved quite a few requests on how/where to order the first
bootleg I mentioned in my post yesterday. Um, I think it was called
"Blow up the Outside" from Brixton Academy, September 96....the 2 CD
one.

I went directly to KTS's website (http://www.kts.it) and checked out the
page. First, I didnt see the boot listed...so it's relatively new.
(like released in the last week).

You can order directly from KTS on that page...they have secure
ordering...blah, blah, blah. OR maybe we can get a wholesale discount?
Since, just for this opportunity....I've created Russell Records :-)

Yeah, this is a longshot, since I don't think we can possibly get enough
people together to get the discount. But, It's worth a shot.

Pricing: ordering from the NON-profit Russell Records ;-) (in american
dollars)

$33.00 plus my cost to ship to you.

Pricing: from KTS (in american dollars)

$44.00 (i'm not sure about shipping..they were pretty vague)

If anyone is interested in trying to get the discount...send me an
email. Only IF YOU'RE SURE! If we don't get enough people
interested...you're all on your own :-)

The tapes are superb (and so creative) and provide me with a lot of SG

Flutter Girl is incredible! Was that supposed to be on SuperUnknown?
The Spoonman remix is very interesting!

If anyone would like to hear MotorCycle Loop elsewhere, you can hear it

If I understand your argument correctly, Kim, you are wondering why
Details, a magazine that embodies young popular culture, would do a

*Fringe* being the definitive word? Well, Soundgarden and Chris Cornell
are no longer on the popular culture "fringe". Like it or not, they are
*completely* mainstream. Look at the way MTV and pop radio has embraced
Soundgarden... and Cornell is playing right into their hands by sporting
the infamously popular 'heroin look'... I'm not saying that there is
anything wrong with it, but I think the reality is that Cornell is as
much a *pop* icon as Mel Gibson or the like... and this is why Details

Subject: concert review

I know it's a little late, but I don't think anyone has posted this concert
review from the LA Times yet, so here it is...

"Part jazzman and part rocker, Soundgarden's frontman Chris Cornell
looks like a hell-bent Puck and sings like a loose cannon. But he doesn't
go for anything dishonest.
That felt like a simple blessing on Sunday as Soundgarden played at
the Universal Amphitheatre to support its latest album, "Down on the
Upside," a swirling mix of speed-metal and art-damaged psychedelia.
Soundgarden was the first group from Seattle's grunge underground to be
signed to a major label. Since 1987, the quartet has married metal with
ironic, downright punkish lyrics and cool smarts with a holler that would
make Axl Rose smile.
Now that Metallica is following its fashion cues, Soundgarden is
wandering from forceful rock into watery psychedelia. Thankfully,
Sunday's economical show stayed on course, with the group's lack of
theatrical pyrotechnics making other bands seem practically corny for
their excesses. Rather than play up their hit "Black Hole Sun" with
flashing lights and guitar windmills, everyone but Cornell left the stage
for the song. The singer turned the throbbing anthem into a solo
slow-groove.
The most gripping tunes were fast and hard, with the assault of "Ty
Cobb" and the half-ironic freedom call of "Rusty Cage" the highlights.
Soundgarden's more recent, loose-limbed and Eastern-tinged sounds were
not neglected, and tribute was paid to the '60s with winding versions of
the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" and the Doors' "Waiting for the Sun."
Slouching over his guitar in a plain white T-shirt, Cornell played his
frontman role with little affectation. Any cliched gesture (balancing his
guitar over his head and tossing it meekly into the drum set, for
instance) would bring a sarcastic smile to his face. Even when he
drop-kicked his microphone, Cornell seemed almost frail. But the band
allowed itself one excess at the end--a feedback frenzy a la Nirvana,
with Cornell standing on his guitar, sliding around on the strings.
After second-billed Rocket From the Crypt's delicious, too-short set
of silver lame and Iggy Pop via Les Brown, Soundgarden seemed even more
spare and club-like. Overall, the evening proved that Soundgarden is an
arena-rock troupe that plays it straight and scrappy like a garage band.
This long-lasting powerhouse just needs to learn to experiment with its
sound without leaning so heavily on dated rock forms."

Warning: Gavin-haters, do not read this.....I don't want this to end up as

I have to disagree to some extent. How many of you could say Chris
Cornell to coworkers or friends and they have no idea who you are
talking about? Granted, cincinnati may be a little backward but I
don't think Chris or Soundgarden are completely mainstream. They have
received a lot of exposure recently with DOTU release but they will
recede back into the Seattle abyss for a few years in between albums
and you won't see them popping up in magazines, tabloids etc. I think
they have very successfully balanced the public and private sides so
as not to saturate the market. And I don't think Chris gives any
impression of "the heroine look". He may be a little thinner but I
think he looks pretty much the same incredible self he always has
been.

Thanks for discussing

Does anyone know if they are making up the Boston show? When I talked to

I talked to a SOMMSter a couple of days ago. She said that she went to
Lollapalooza this year and Chris looked kind of scary. It was like he
took some kind of drug before his performance and he was just going crazy!!
In various pictures he does look scary, but it makes him all the more
scarier. Ironic for a guy who's supposed to by shy and soft-spoken.

speaking of receiving SG cd's, I finally have my official copy of the
Launch CD with "Karaoke". Big up to SOMMSter Dani Wegelin for that one!

I agree, Karen,(and maybe it is a Cincinnati thing), but my co-workers
here had no clue who I was talking about it when I said I was going to
Chicago to meet Soundgarden...(a few did, but the majority said
"WHO?")...and of course I brought my pics of the band at the Chicago
meeting to work and showed em around and I think only one person I know
said "OOh, that is Chris Cornell"....I also had Details on my desk for
quite awhile and several people asked me who that was....Hey maybe I just
work with a bunch of country-listening old fogies (geez, imagine if they
are lurkers on the list;-) but I think saying "maintstream" is going a
bit far.....When I mentioned Pearl Jam to them, they said "Oh yeah, I know
Pearl Jam....is Soundgarden like them?" *humph* and I also disagree
with the "heroin look" comments...i think that is a *really* unfair
thing to say....it scares me that there even IS a heroin look, but putting
Chris into that category is not cool, IMO...

disagreeing with alot lately,

Subject: Ready for more in Seattle

Hey All!

I am back in the office (temporarily) from being in Seattle and not
seeing SG, but I still ended up having a great time.

I must say, even though I was disappointed, I am glad that Chris felt
the need to postpone the shows due to his voice. At least he had the
integrity to do so, rather than just go through the motions and put on
a half-assed performance. I don't think anyone would really want to
see them not be able to give it their all, especially for the hometown
crowd, when they know how killer they can be live (except maybe Bill
and Lance, who will not be able to stay for the rescheduled shows since
they flew in from Salt Lake City). At least, I know that I'd rather he
save his voice.

Jen and I were with Aaron, Ryan and Vikki and all decided to go to the
OK. I just *knew* that Ben would show up, kind of lost for not being
able to perform. Earlier we had seen him enter the Mercer Arena and he
was the only one of the band to show up.

He did come into the OK with Erin, although she warned us it was not a
good time to approach him. It was fairly obvious, poor guy. But we
had a nice time talking to Erin and I showed her my pics from Chicago,
which she thought were pretty cool.

I did go to the bar and bought Ben, his girlfriend and whoever else was
with them a round of drinks. We respectfully left him alone all
evening. On our way out, Ben shouts over, "Hey, thanks for the
drinks!" I say, "You're welcome, see ya later!" I may have said
something else, who knows. Like any time or whatever. It was just
cool. His mood obviously changed to happy during the course of the evening.

Wednesday and Thursday Jen and I spent with Bill and Lance (who are
*the* coolest, sweetest and appreciative guys) showing them some of the
Seattle sights, hanging out and having a great time. We'll be doing
more of the same tonight and tomorrow and maybe hooking up with more
Seattle Sommsters at the Croc tonight for Satan's Pilgrims. Mazzy Star
is also playing.

Still anxiously awaiting two Seattle shows,

Bonnie

I agree that it's a scary thing that the heroin look exists... but I do
think that Chris has it going on in that Details spread. Whoever did his
make-up made damn sure that he looked like a CK model (who ALL have the
look). He doesn't look like that in person, though. And just because some
of us say that he has the heroin look in that magazine, does not mean that we
think he's actually ON heroin. =) I just think it's odd that he would allow
himself to be represented in that way. The whole Details thing seems to be
out of character for Chris (not that any of us really has any deep insight
into Chris. Well, except for Michael Apple... but he's long gone. ;-)

Hello kiddies, how have you been?

Anyway, you know how Chris seems to always be defending Led Zep. I mean,
someone mentioned that he blew this guy off, 'cause he said he didn't like
Led Zep? I think he's got a point there. Think about The way Chris sings,
and the way he sounds. He kinda reminds me of Jimmy Page when I hear him
sing. I think Jimmy might have put a lot of influence on how Chris sings. I
mean, Chris has put a lot of influence on my singing. As a Soprano, I never
really ever sang lower register notes, now I'm singing Seasons for my
inductions into Tri-Honor Music Society.

Next, A question was asked a preety long time ago, asking "if anyone has
heard any music played on the radio, made after louder than love." Last
night, I was listening to Seton Hall's radio station, and I heard Hunted
Down, and they really don't play any SG, so it kinnda surprized me a bit. I
guess the only place to hear it is on a college radio station.

Knowing how many of us seems to be influenced by SG musically, I know some of
you have to have your own bands. I'm interested in your demo tapes. E-mail
me, and I'll give you more details!

About this Heroin look, I personally hate it. Chris should not be associated
with this look, and Curses on my parents for using that term about him.

Subject: SG & Zep

Actually, Jimmy Page played guitar... Robert Plant sang. Anyway,
I think a Led Zep/Soundgarden comparison is perfect. Most people
seem to only know Zeppelin from the same 3 or 4 songs the radio
plays over and over and over (the same treatment Soundgarden is
getting from radio too these days) although they put out a dozen
albums or so. If you took the time to listen to Zeppelin's
albums in their entirity you'd hear that they were an amazingly
diverse band who incorporated alot of different musical styles,
such as Middle Eastern rhythms and instuments, into their
performances. Also, in the 70's they would perform acoustic
portions during many of their often 3 hour long shows (that's 3
hours WITHOUT an opening act), predating the Unplugged fad by a
couple of decades. I hated Led Zep all thru high school because
everyone else loved them (and also because I only knew them from
the same 3 or 4 songs the radio played), but in the years since
I've realized just how incredible the band really was from a
musical standpoint. They weren't just 'Stairway To Heaven'...
So, I can't think of a better band to compare SG to in the "Big
Picture Of Rock History" than Led Zep. While SG isn't as
"innovative" as Zep was, they certainly take what Zep started and
create music that is unique in its own way.

Surely you're going?????? Where ARE you, man?!

What I need to know is where do I get my tickets? BASS? The same way I =

 And how much are they?

Oh, and we don't know Melbourne very well, except for the MCG and the =

so can someone please give me an idea of where Festival Hall is?

I'd be keen to meet some other Sommsters, if there are any. I certainly =

Looking forward to hearing from any friendly Melbournite =
