Hey,

I went to the much awaited Pumpkins/Garbage show at the Anaheim
pond. We drove an hour and a half in the pouring rain to see what I was
hoping would be a good show and let me tell you if anyone out there has
tickets do yourself a favor and sell them for as much as you can get. I
guess I am still on my high from seeing SG a week ago. So, Garbage was
actually pretty good, they opened with Queer and closed with Tear your
world apart. Shirley Manson has a very good stage presence I was
impressed, so on to the main event--Pumpkins. Never have I left a show
feeling so empty and like I wasted my time. The band is so obviously out
of synch with each other, obviously the loss of Jimmy Chamberlain has
affected them more than they would like to admit. James and D'arcy were
playing way too fast--making a speed metal version of Disarm and then the
killer was that Billy forgot the words to Cherub Rock. I couldn't believe
it. And when someone threw a t-shirt on stage to him, he stopped playing
Thirty-Three and told the audience to stop throwing shit at him. I
couldn't believe it. I urge all of you to boycott this show and don't
purchase Mellon Collie for Christmas. As for me, I am looking forward to
DOTU from Santa. By, the way, where are all of you SoCal sommsters?

I see most music rooms on this kind of server. How's about it?

Does anyone know when Hype! will be playing in Dallas?

And last but not least, the BUTOW single. Ok, is there anyone out of the

Don't know if anyone else has posted anything about Seattle folks
trying to meet up for the show tonight, but...

We're pretty much just trying to all meet in line. We want to get good
seats and figure that's our best bet, rather than getting beat up on the floor.

I'm told Vikki will probably hit line about 2:30pm. Thugs arriving
anywhere between 2-3pm. Jen and Bonnie around 3:30-4pm and Chris
Mansfield between 4:30-5pm. And Andrea much later due to the last
minute scheduling of an interview with Microsoft.

Probably all you have to do is yell Somms or our names. Hopefully,
most of you know what Vikki and Aaron look like, by their pics on the
page. I'll be wearing a purple HellyHansen *waterproof* ski jacket and
have long blond hair which will probably be covered up if it's still
raining. ;-) Jen and I are both short and she's got short dark hair.
Start at the front of the line and work your way back, that's what I
plan on doing and GOOD LUCK! Maybe we'll all do something after the show...

Danno, I tried mailing you twice but it came back as undeliverable.

Hopefully Wednesday will be more organized, with the first run out of the way!

     Happy Holidays Everybody,

There has been much commentary on the condition of CC's voice during
this tour. I witnessed some of his problems first hand at the NYC
shows. This leads me to a question that I don't think has been asked.
     Shoot me if I'm wrong.

It seems to me that in addition to any illness, his voice also suffers
from the way he sings. He sings from his throat. Now, I remember
reading somewhere that CC took professional voice lessons. Unless
things have changed, the first thing a voice coach will tell you is
that you must sing from the diaphragm. Otherwise, you place a
tremendous amount of strain on your vocal cords. Therefore, does the
way he sings mean that he disregards that advice, or that he never
received it, or that to follow that advice would significantly alter
the voice we have all come to love? Don't get me wrong--I think he is
one of THE GREAT male rock vocalists--but his voice seems so fragile
and might benefit from singing in a more stress-reducing manner.

Has CC ever made any reference to his vocal training, and singing from
the diaphragm vs. from the throat?

as chris has said many times over "i only know one way to sing." and
that being true, he does sing straight from his throat and that is a
big reason for his now common vocal problems during tours. also his
constant drinking and smoking do *wonders* for that voice, let me
tell you. = ) he strains himself, and he knows it, but that's the way
he sings and if he had learned to sing properly, maybe we wouldn't
really have SG as they are today...

In the soundgarden book (i cant remember the name) there was something
about a neighbor hearing Chris practicing his screams.I dont think it made
reference to any actual vocal training.Chris's vocal style is far from a
natural singing voice. As far as I can remember he's always sounded a little
strained live.

i wish to send out a big f'ing thank you to our favorite vocalist, chris.
too bad he does not know how to warm up. this "beat my voice into
submission" technique obviously does not work, and this marks the second
consecutive world tour that suffers on account of his selfishness. what
more does it take to get it, mr. cornell? a different tactic is probably
in order. take the hint.
i must apologize in advance for my tone. first of all, i am in an altered
mind state that is going to go to waste, and is probably going to result
in a lot of nice hate mail for those who do not understand. secondly, i
must apologize to those who missed out on the NY and MA shows for the
same reason i did tonight. i did not stop to consider the possibilities
of such an event if it were to happen to me, so i am sorry i was so
selfish about this. now i know how you feel.
i don't know what else to do except go home and listen to some Pond. At
least those guys know what's going on. hell, in that case i may as well
go listen to hater as well.
some one-eyed guy on the security force outside the show said there's a
possibility of a rescheduled show on sunday and monday. that's great, i
have finals on the following days. fuck.
goodnight. looking forward to reading the digest tomorrow and issuing a

god, i don't know what i think he should do. he's should be GOOD! be

I would imagine they were referring to the fact that "Pretty Noose" on

You know what bugs me? I'll tell you anyway.
How the guitar solo in 'My Wave' is completely drowned out by the rhythm

It was a great treat to be able to hear kim play it so clearly at the

I just got an e-mail from the Esprit Mail-order service, telling me they
have the Australian BUTOW single (w/ 2 live tracks and "Splice of Space
Jam"), so those who want it had better e-mail them soon, 'cos they seldom
have more than one copy of a single.

Right now, it's the only version that has been released at all, and it's
only been released in Australia. I know that one part of the UK version is
the same, but it isn't available there yet. As for the single with the Moby
remix, it hasn't been released yet either, since it's part of the UK set. I
think it will be released sometime next week.

Damn....nearly forgot to post the URL for Esprit:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/esprit/

They want around 12$ for it, which is a little expensive, but I haven't seen
the single anywhere else on the net.....or in any store either for that
matter. I bought mine in HMV, but apparantly I bought the only one they had.
In fact, when I asked them if they had more, they denied ever having had
that single in their store...........ahhh..strange people....

Carolyn your post says pretty much what I've been hearing from other
people who don't necessarily like Soundgarden the best, but LOVE the
list! So, it turns out its US, its this list, that keeps people coming
back for more. Still it does seem (to my relief) that most of us do

them. It seems we've really somehow developed something very special
here, above and beyond our feelings for the band. I find that
fascinating. Thanks for all your responses to my question.

hey guys

apparently for the ny show that was canceled it was because chris had a
bad cold and it was affecting his voice. for the last ny show,
saturday nite, he was able to sing but kind of bad even though it
sounded great to me but there were some songs that the audience had to
sing for him.

he has had voice problems before and i think it's coming back. maybe
he needs a vacation - here in sunny florida? i have guest bedrooms,
pool table, jet-ski, etc. - from his singing. he needs to give his
voice a rest from all this touring.

Okay, that feels better. Now on to business. Yes, the shows on the 10th and
11th were cancelled. They have been rescheduled for the 17th and 18th.

A few of us decided to go to the OK for a few drinks and to warm up after we
were told that the show was cancelled. Then, after a few minutes, Erin from
Silver came in. She says thank you to the people in the Chicago group who
sent the cards and flowers, and that she will be responding soon to emails.
She has been really busy with all the tour work that has to be done, and her
computer has been in the shop for a while now. She also said the reason
behind the cancellation (straight from the man himself) is that Chris didn't
want to perform with a half-assed voice. He didn't think it was fair to
everyone who spent their hard earned money to go out and not be able to give
the best show possible. Now I would hardly call that a personall attack on
anyone, or selfish either.

Another note, for those of you interested. Rocket From The Crypt will be
playing tonight (11th) at the Crocodile Cafe. Aaron will be there for damn
sure.

Now I have to study for a dreaded Math final that starts in 7 hours.

Hi guys,

I've read with amusement the posts about Bush's Gavin Rossdale. =
Amusement because it is all so pathetic! :-) Okay, so the guy came out =
and said he doesn't like Soundgarden. Is that really such a crime? =
Some of YOU have come out and said you don't like Bush - why do you feel =
like you can say what you like but he can't????? =20
["oooooh, he said he hated my band, so I'm going to go out and say I =
hate his!"]

Everyone likes different bands!! Get over it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think those of you who have said they =
hate Bush say so because they think Bush is a "ripoff" band. Just like =
you say Green Day, or Stone Temple Pilots, or silverchair, or [insert =
appropriate band here] are ripoffs because they sound like other bands. =
So are you saying that there is only allowed to be one band in the world =
for each "category" of music?? That no one else should be allowed to =
write/sing/play anything similar for fear of being labelled ripoffs? =
Get real.

Ever heard of the saying "imitation is the greatest form of flattery"?? =

Now I, for one, happen to like a few Bush songs ("Glycerine" is simply =
beautiful to me - so shoot me), and I LIKE silverchair. Okay, so they =
might sound similar to other bands. Soundgarden sounds similar to Led =
Zeppelin, for pete's sake!!!!! But the bands they sound similar to did =
NOT write the songs that Bush, silverchair, Soundgarden, and [insert =
appropriate band here] wrote. If Bush hadn't emerged, I never would =
have known the song "Glycerine", for example. No one else wrote that =
song - Bush did.

Okay, so I've said my piece. Flame away all you like - but remember, =
I'm only doing what I have every right to do.........express my opinion.
