"Black Hole Sun" Like You've Never Heard it Before
"...The most frightening names on the list of luminaries are perennial
Sinatra punching bags Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, who were
somehow coaxed into performing a cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole

From the Get a Life Department ...

I'm sure there are some of you out there who attended the 1995 Reading
Festival or own the bootleg, so this is a question for you. Remember
the end of the show, with all that feedback, like even more than they
usually produce? Well, in the middle of it, Chris shouts out something,
and repeats it twice. He's saying something sucks, but what? "The
something something sucks!" he shouts. To me it sounds like "The anthem
on TV sucks," but what the hell does that mean? Somebody must know what
he's saying. I've listened to this bootleg roughly three billion times
(this was one hell of a phenomenal show, and an excellent bootleg as
far as sound quality goes) but those utterances still leave me with a
vacant look in my eyes. Anyone with info please share it. I NEED to
know what Chris thinks sucks so I can blindly agree with him and get on
with my life. Thank you.

Subject: SD & LA shows and Susan Silver meeting

Hey all just wanted to say what a extremely great time I had at the
the San Diego and LA show. San Diego was probably the best just for
the fact that we were right in front of the stage (in front of Ben)
and LA was seats. As for Ben's behavior, nothing out of the ordinary,
no tantrums or anything. Chris' voice to me was superb, I would never
though he had just been sick. At one point he went to the side of the
stage, started coughing and then lit a ciggerate. (smart) As for his
appearance.. HOT DAMN. He was so fucking beautiful, especially at
the LA show w/his tight white t-shirt. OOH BABY...YUM YUM. Oh shit,
sorry I'm getting carried away.

Also I would like to say how it was a pleasure to meet you CA
sommsters. We should definately keep in touch. By the way, (should
that be BTW?-CL?) the picture the waiter took of all of us turned out
very nice. If any of you want a copy of it, e-mail me and I will get
copies made. I also took some photos at both shows, of course as to
be expected with a disposable camera, they didnt turn out that great.
You can see the guys but its kinda dark. Owell, I guess I will have to
rely on memories.

In other Soundgarden related stories, I thought I would finally post
the meeting I & SNDGRDNGRL(Christy) had with Susan Silver when we were
in Seattle the day before Halloween.

While we were in Seattle we decided we wanted to go check out Susan Silver
Management. Our husbands could care a less about it so they dropped us off
and told us they would pick us up in a hour. Our intention was just to go
up to the office and just check out the gold albums, the office etc. Of
course, we had no idea it would be our lucky day. Once we decided to go in
the building, we stood on the second level of the stairs and decided on what
we were going to say and how we should approach this. After about fifteen
minutes of discussing this, we hear the door open from downstairs and knew
someone was coming in. Immediately we heard several dogs barking.(the sound
of pomeranians to be exact)and knew it was her. We panicked and started
walking down the stairs and there she was. She was taking the leashes off
the dogs and Christy said "Susan". She looked up and said "Hi". We
introduced ourselves and told her where we were from and that we were
actually going up to her office and hoping she would be there. She said
"perfect timing" and proceeded to invite us up to the office. The whole
time I'm shaking and cant even say anything and Christy is of course calm
and collected. We get up to her office (the lobby area) and she introduces
us to two girls in the office. I think one girl was named Haley but I cant
remember the other girls name. She lets us look around and play with the
dogs. Christy tells her about the mail she has sent her and she remembered
who she was which was kinda nice. We asked if we could take a picture with
her but unfortunately she declined and said "I'm self-conscience, I let the
guys do that". Well then we decide we should probably go and we say our
good-byes and thank her for letting us come up there and on our way out the
door her receptionist whispers to her, "Chris is on the phone". I about
died. Anyway we left and that's our story of the Susan Silver meeting.

i dig chris' voice and his lyrics, his songwriting, the way he shows

vocalist and lyricist and I have to agree.

I actually wanted to see some moshing after hearing about the other shows.
I was very close to the stage and had a good view of the pit. Sometimes I

you get to sit/stand at a show. The posers and wantabees in the back and
the real fans in the front. I know if I was a musician performing I'd want

From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

I have to agree in part, I mean Chris's voice is fucking *AMAZING*, just
listen to the intro to 'Loud Love', or 'Mind Riot'... Billy Corgan doesn't
touch Chris, doesn't come near - Hell, a lot of people just plain don't like
his whiney tone... ;) I don't mind - I think the songs he writes more than
make up for it, the guy's a song-writing genius, as is Chris. But when it
comes to guitar playing Corgan beats Chris hands down... technically...
Chris writes fucking great guitar riffs, but Corgan is pretty much the
consumate guitar player... the guy can wail on a lead like no-one else, yet
still drop into dream like simplicity and beauty avoiding the shitty
guitar-wank of Malmsteen et al...

I'm not saying anything against Chris (God forbid.. ;) ) his guitar playing
skills are great, but it's more of a 'do the job' style, more a tool to help
convey the song than anything else... but he's a master craftsman when it
comes to the job!!!!!

Later,
Brydon

- - and as for Corgan looking bizzare, well you need bizzare looking people to
make the rest of us look normal... and Chris look even better in all you

Despite the fact I may like other bands music better, or an a par with SG's -
bands like Monster Magnet, (the dearly departed) Kyuss, Tumblweed, the
Wildhearts... I think this list simply beats any other hands down... SG are
still of my all time favourite groups, their music still inspires me the whole
time... I'd consider myself a die-hard SG fan, but it doesn't stop me from
committing my passion to any other band! I mean, I love stuff from Del Amitri
to Sepultura... I just hate it when people are stuck in the rut of following
one band and one band only... I like the fact that the list members
acknowledge their love of other bands and don't just flame anyone who isn't
SG...

Basically this is a healthy, interesting list that keeps everyone updated on
the latest SG news, has an honest feeling of cameraderie, and has introduced
me to a lot of very cool people who have a lot of cool opinions and views on
the band I love...

Hope this helps somewhat Kathie!!

Subject: Sacramento Show

I waited in line in the rain because the power tripping security didn't
want us to stand under the awning. I was front & center for the show,
so I didn't get to hear every song. There were a few songs that I was
fighting so hard to breathe that I couldn't do anything except push
against the barricade and gasp for air. I don't think I remember the
order either... sorry. So here are some of the songs I heard:
Spoonman Rusty Cage (Very fast... Kim, Chris and Ben were laughing)
Burden In My Hand, Hands All Over, Outshined, Blow Up the Outside World,
Black Hole Sun (Chris), Fell On Black Days, Down On the Upside,
Jesus Christ Pose (yeah!), and a version of Motocycle Loop. I know there
were more songs, I just can't remember them.

I spotted the fork necklace on Chris, by the way. He was wearing a long
sleeved button up shirt, which stayed on the whole show.

Ben was trying to carry out his "angry" act, pretending to punch the
speaker cabinet and then spitting in the air. I reminded me of big time
wrestling- he looked more bored than angry. I forget which song it was,
but he wasn't even playing for most of the song.

Matt is an amazing drummer. Chris Cornell blocked my view of Matt most of
the night. He threw his sticks to the crowd before the encore.

Chris' rant was about MTV. I didn't catch the whole thing, but my husband
reports that it was something like: This is a video that MTV refused to
play. They don't have time to play videos now; all they have time for is
game shows and ...? shows and no time for videos. So there is no point in
trying to watch MTV to ...? so we'll show it to you. (Don't quote me on
that because those are not his exact words)

Kim seemed to have a good night. He moved around a lot and was smiling at
people. He came out onto the stage extensions several times. He and Chris
whispered several times during songs... Kim played Guilds, one green one
and one wood finish (I don't know what kind of wood). I think he played a
black one too.

The sound wasn't mixed right where I was standing. The vocals were a
little too far down in the mix on some songs and they were a little muddy.

My ears are still ringing. Maybe the sound was mixed right and it's my
ears that are messed up.

I'll be able to give a much better report on the Oakland show because
I won't be in the front.

Oh yeah, I took pictures with a disposable camera.

My "I spoke to Kim" report will follow later.

Later,

Tiffany

I am really into Soundgarden. It's not just because of Chris. Sometimes
you may get into a band because of how they look on the outside, but for
me, SG was the exception. The first song I ever heard from SG was "Rusty
Cage", and I gradually got hooked to SG with songs like "Jesus Christ Pose"
and "Outshined". Chris' voice started to really draw me, and I just love
Ben's bass and Kim's guitar. Matt's cool too--he's not your average
generic drummer that's in a lot of pop bands today.

When I found this list, I was so happy because the people I know offline
aren't into SG like I am. I don't know anyone who has the same excitement
like SOMMS members. Hey, I probably sound really sappy right now, But
that's just the way I feel. There are some people who join the list and
immediately unsub because they're not die-hard fans or don't want to
devote their time to a mailing list. You do receive tons of mail if you're
not on the digest version, but I don't mind--it's not like I read every
single one word for word. It's an addiction, I guess.

I guess I can call myself a feminist because I care about the concerns of

you mean by "list hootchies". What's your definition of a list hootchie?
Are you referring to all female SOMMSters? I guess I understand if you
meant it in jest. Am I necessarily in your category because I think Chris

Subject: Tool/MAtt/Screaming Life book

Hey! I was wondering about the CD that comes with the Screaming Life
book. what is on it? also, is the book worth buying? a friend of mine
owns a book store and will sell it to me half price.

also, just wanted to say a few things about Matt being surpassed as a
drummer. I don't think it's fair to say, just by listening to a CD that
one musician is better than another. Based off the drumming I've heard on
all 3 Tool CDs, Matt could play that stuff with no problem, but I'd be
willing to bet that the guy from Tool could play anything on any SG
album, not to slag Matt or anything. I know Matt could do things that
would make most drummers head spin, that he's never done on an album. for
example, I saw Sponge at Lollapalooza over the summer (waiting for SG of
course) and like their music, but never really considered their drummer
to be anything special. but live, he did a lot of really cool stuff that
is pretty difficult (I've been playing drums for several years, so I have
a good grasp on the technical aspects). so to end all of this rambling,
my point is that you can't really take a musician's skill on an album to
be the peak level of his/her techincal ability. I mean, I cna play any SG
song on drums with minimal difficulty (even JCP after much practice), but I
wouldn't dream of saying that I can play anything Matt can.
alright. that's enough outta me. if anyone wants to discuss this with
me privately feel free.

in fact, the ladies i know of that are referred to in that manner or refer

Imagine if you were famous: You could not go outside, or go to the 7-11
store, or anywhere without being recodnized and approached by people who you
dont feel like talking to. While it would be a big thrill for them, for you
it's just everyday shit. They would want your autograph and you'd smile and
give it to them so they'd leave you alone. Or maybe you'd just avoid that
situation all together.

You would probably spent alot of time in solitude. Andy you would be
wondering if all those people who bought your records really understood what
you meant anyway. Hoepfully, you would know your real fans did, or knew they
tried to so as not to let you down. They would know not all of it is meant
to be anything more than just good music. Some of your fans would obsess,
study you, write to you and love and adore you. Most wouldn't take the time.
When your famous, there would be a definite division between your people and
the rest of the world. Us against the outside world. Blow up the outside
world!

It's nice to hear from that Shroom chick they are really as nice as we
thought they were, and not letting the whole "total fucking god head" thang
get too big.

And yes Kathie, SG is my favorite band, more than you know :).

I agree that its useless ragging on Billy Corgan and the rest of the
Pumpkins. Chris Cornell and Billy Corgan are two of the best frontmen in
music today, even though they are completely different. I recently saw
the Pumpkins and Soundgarden within a week and they were both different,
yet AMAZING shows. Both Soundagrden and the Smashing Pumpkins are
incredible. I would love to hear what Chris and Billy have to say about
each-other.

BTW-- If you wanna rag on someone rag on Gavin Rossadel from Bush. I
heard that music last time, when it was called Nirvana. Gavin should try
thinking on his own for once.

What's up people. Had to give my opinion on this interesting subject.
Soundgarden is my favorite band of all time of course, but you know..I am
actually listening to them more *now* than when I first got into them back when
Superunknown came out. SG is *still* in heavy rotation around my house.I
encounter some aspect of Soundgarden every day..sometimes I listen to them
coming home from school, or turn on the TV to see some SG video or read a
Rolling Stone with a SG article in it. This list has further concreted my
allegience to this band.. I could read posts about SG all day. Like
Kathie said, I don't exactly know why someone who felt that SG wasn't
their favorite band would sit through 100 or so posts a day. I don't mean
to flame anyone here, but it does kind of befuddle me. Anyway, I better
go and listen to Into The Void for the tenth straight time..

vincent

-and the CDs that I am listening to now are Tool's Aenima and
               Soundgarden's Fresh Deadly Rarities : ) -

Okay, this is cool. I finally get to post my first report on a live
Soundgarden experience (my first - whew). What can I say, Soundgarden
kicked Ass!!!
First of all we got out of the house a little late, we got at the auditorium
during Pond (Sorry Tiffany - but we looked for you inside). Pond was pretty
cool but Rocket from the Crypt was a little TOO much - but you guys would be
proud, Sacramento was a very good crowd to the openers.
Anyway, of course SG came out with "Spoonman" (Awsome). The guys all looked
into it - can't remember the whole playlist but some of my personal
highlights were "Hands all Over", "Outshined" "Rusty Cage" and the JCP encore.
I also have to say that this was my first experience down on the floor at a
concert - A whole new experience!!!! One I plan to repeat. It turned what
used to be a spectator sport into Full Contact (not for the squeamish). I
must say though that I caught NO negative vibes. A very positive (if
intense) experience.
Did anyone else go to this show? Is SG always this awsome?
New but True Fan,
Staci

Subject: STONED!!!!!!

Hey everyone,
Well, I was thumbing through my Rolling Stone mag and I found a section
where they were reviewing albums that were released this year. Well, DOTU
was mentioned and they really didn't have anything nice to say about it while
not having anything really rude to say either. First of all they picked
Dusty as a song to talk about. Now to me the song is good but also it
doesn't sound like Chris's usual lyrics. In fact it sounds half way happy in
an odd sort of way. Anyway, they sort of slash this song and try to say that
this is how the whole album is. "Soundgarden are capable of tearing down
walls; here, they're just rattling window." Some songs on this album are
mellow while some are pretty kick-ass. I really like DOTU and everything
else Soundgarden has done. Each song is different lyric and music wise.
That is why I enjoy their music so much because in all the songs I've heard,
none sound the same and each song has it's own meaning. I think that Rolling
Stone is pissed because of how they acted towards them at the shows. Now, I
know this may have been printed before all that happened but maybe not. All
I'm trying to say is that I think Rolling Stone really didn't give the album
the chance that it should have gotten. Just a thought, sorry to ramble on.
 Take care everyone!!!

Toodles & Love,
Kelly :)

Anyway, I finally can prove to my family and friends that I really met

watching him, smiling....and then one of me and Matt talking (kathie we look
like two little kids on christmas!!!), and a great shot of the whole group
at Moody's (it even has Erin!) and hey DD, there is a shot of your finger
pointing at Chris ;-) and a super cool shot of Kim. I know this means
little to anyone but me, but these pictures made my day.

I hope these make it up on the page..

well, after being crushed and blown away, i now realize that
the tool drummer, danney carey, has a slight advantage. He has two kick

his role-offs (while utilizing his arms for variou cymbals and other things).

i imagine matt could use two bass drums, but their music really doesn't
