There has been quite a lof of talk on touring the USA sometime in

Hi, SOMMSters.

I'm fan of SG from Moscow and I have one prodlem.
I want a couple of SG t-shirts but I have no chance to find any in Moscow.
But I have a friend of mine who lives near Boston. So tell me where in
Boston he can find such a shop where he can buy some t-shirts and
approximately how much they cost. E-mail me please if you have any
information concerning this, I will be VERY grateful to you for help.
If in Boston there is no such shop, then maybe somewhere in NY, 'cause my
friend will be there soon.

Thanx for your attention. Later.

Have you ever found yourself watching videos on MTV and thinking, "SG could
do better"? I mean, I've started to compare videos that I used to like to
SG's videos and now I don't like those videos as much. I was watching MTV
today and the Presidents of the United States of America came on with "Mach
5". I'm not a big PUSA fan, but I think that song is cute. I was watching it
today and a thought just pop in my head: "Soundgarden is so much better than
this." I mean most multimedia is rated using stars and four is the most you
can get, right? Well, Chris Cornell is four stars by himself! Not including
the other guys in the band and everyone's talent and the song itself!! Once
you factor in all of that plus the VIDEO, well you've got a 33 star video on
your hands!! Just thought I would share this brainstorm with you!

May Soundgarden be with you.

Catchy title, aye? ;) It seems no matter who I compare SG with and
Chris's voice, including R. Plant, Chris always wins.

Let's compare Chris with mellon head from Smashing Pumpkins for a moment
shall we? Chris sings melodically, hits every note, screams beautifully,
gets high and low and hits everything in between AND plays a kick ass guitar.
Mellon head (whatever the hell his name is) has no vocal range, sings either
way to high, or that low croaky singing he does. He simply has no middle
range at all from what I've seen. Plus he is so bizzare to look at. I look
at him with this puzzled bewilderment like I would if I saw a space
alien...Hey, wait a minute....

Chris I could look at all day long. He is beautiful. I try to imagine
him doing those everyday, not so glamorous things we all do in life to bring
myself down to the ground.

Well, there is my .02 worth for today.

Peace and Happiness.

I can understand why those "die hard" SG fans are irritated when someone
posts a letter on the list proclaiming that Soundgarden isn't their favorite
band. There's no need to state it to someone who really loves the group. I
myself have only recently started to enjoy the sounds of Chris and Co. I had
heard them about 5 years ago and thought they were pretty cool, but never
followed up the interest. After hearing dotu, I became serious about the
band. I know I have missed much of their pre-Ben music, but this doesn't
make me any less of a fan. I am still hoping that I'll be able to see them
live before they finally call it quits with touring, and I am trying to
gather all their past albums. I love this list and those who post on it,
even though many of them may not particularly care for me. I hope to see the
SOMMS crew sometime. However, regarding your question pertaining to those
who subscribe to the list and are not great fans I can only say that they
may be interested in what goes on, and are curious. I know I was, and now I
can't get enough of it. I hope this was some help.

This is an old contest, from before the site was redone on October

The contest to win a "backstage pass" to secret sections of the

From: Lynne Low <lynnel@yardi.com>
Subject: Finally, SG in the flesh!!!

"Mind clear" as my best friend Ray would say. Here goes..what a fantastic
experience! For years I have listened to SG and been moved by the lyrics
and the music. I feel so connected to them. Being able to see their
movements while playing their instruments, watching the expressions on
Chris' face, feeling the music deep inside. I could feel myself floating
away. Chris walked on stage with a huge smile on his face. The guys all
seemed happy. I couldn't see Matt very well from where I was sitting -
giant speakers blocked my view! After hearing all of the stories about Ben
I was expecting some monster. No way! He seemed very mellow and relaxed.
I felt the need to hold him because he's so misunderstood. I won't go into
a song list because I don't remember the order. That's ok - I'm sure others
with post it.

Chris's voice-what can be said? Amazing range! The highs, the lows and
everything inbetween he handled so naturally. He is so intense. It hard for
me to believe that he sings these songs over and over because they sounded
so fresh-almost like they were playing them for the first time. Does this
make sense? The band is tight.
They flow together.

Matt - what a drummer! I only wish I could have seen him better because he
was rocking! He has to be one of the greatest drummers of all time.

Kim - I was in awe watching him fingers dance upon the strings. He was
wearing a Terror Crew t-shirt.

Ben- He was cool, quiet and did what he was born to do. I would love to sit
and chat with him about music. I have a thing for bass players.

"Jesus Christ Pose," "Blow Up the Outside World" and "Rusty Cage" are the
songs that stood out the most for me. I'm surprised because they did my
favorites but these got to me the most. Again, the band was hot!

Some Quotes - "We're from Seattle where the high school teachers shoot
heroin and it rains 365 days of the year." "You get to live in beautiful
California where the sun shines everyday." - Chris

"This is the part of the show where I usually rant about something but if
you cancel your Rolling Stone subscriptions I won't." - Chris

"This is our new single about to be release on the radio."- Chris (He then
went into "Ty Cobb" and the audience went wild! Everybody sang along.

There were some private whispers between Chris and Kim (I wonder what they
were talking about?) The crowd behaved themselves. No one threw anything
at the guys.

I met Christy and Dena! I was pumped up by their energy from the moment I
met them. Thanks for hanging with me!

It was a wonderful first time experience that I will never forget. I could
go into more detail but to be honest with you I am still somewhat dazed by
the whole evening. As silly as it might sound it was extremely personal and
spiritual for me.

Addicted To Noise staff writer Gil Kaufman reports: If you just can't

Hollywood Records is releasing something called Lounge-A-Palooza next

The most frightening names on the list of luminaries are perennial
Sinatra punching bags Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, who were somehow

reviews, I knew it was going to be a great cover but I didn't expect
it to be so great! I loved the way they slowed it down, and Chris'
vocals worked great with the song. It gave the song an eerie feeling
especially since they mixed it with Bootcamp. If or when they release the
next single (my guess is its Dusty since they had some video footage for
it during the concert already), I hope they record HS and add it as
a B-side. Either that or the cover of Waiting for the Sun. They've

Hello, fellow SOMMSters!!! I hope everyone is doing well! 6 more

their tour, I can't wait to finally get to see them for myself!!!
It's been torture!!! Okay, the rest of this is not SG related (I
apologize to Seth and our Somms Sheriff--please don't arrest me!) I
decided to go ahead and post this after several people had mentioned
that MTV should be banned/boycotted. After reading this I was seriously
disgusted. Here it is:
"AND THIS WEEK'S LAMENESS PERSONIFIED AWARD GOES TO: The cast and
crew of MTV's BUZZKILL program who recently visited Portland, Oregon
to film stunts for their program in which they play pranks on
unsuspecting victims and record it all for posterity. According to
the December 1st issue of THE OREGONIAN, the BUZZKILL episode filmed
in Portland that aired on September 21st did not really tell the
whole story. Apparently, one of the pranks involves a learning
impaired man, but the segment did NOT show footage of one of the
Buzzkill cameras whacking the victim in the mouth and causing more
than $3000 damage to his teeth (and the Buzzkill team subsequently
practically passing out from laughing so much about what they had
just done). The victim reportedly has no health insurance and MTV
have so far refused to cough up payment. This totally sucks."
I got that from the Vibe

smiled at me for about a minute or so. Chris's voice sounded really
good. When they played Jerry Garcia's finger the band went to the side
of the stage and I noticed that Matt and Ben were in the corner playing
it. Matt was playing the guitar and I think Ben was playing the bass. I
wasn't sure if they were really playing it or if it was a recording. Did
anybody else realize that?
There seemed to be a lot of top 40 people there who only knew popular
songs like Black Hole Sun and Burden in My Hand. There were more
families and younger kids than I expected. The people that were around
me in the pit seemed like they were there to see Black Hole Sun and
didn't know anything before Superunknown. When they played Hands all
over everyone around me was quiet. I was kind of disappointed. The worst
part of the evening was when this 10 year girl caught Matt's drumstick
and before the concert she asked me what band was going to play! She was
only there because her dad was some producer.
I thought that the concert was great and the band seemed like they
were having a lot of fun. I saw the SOMMS sign :) and I saw Kim make a
weird face at it. It was great. This was the best SG concert that I've
seen. :)

Thanks for listening
Lisa :)

Greetings again list,
How is everyone? Hopefully good. I have direct information from
the owner of a large venue in my area. ( Starwood, all you Nashvillians ) And
supposedly they have SG scheduled at some point in July. This of course
seems
odd that they would come back here after playing here but a mere two or three
weeks ago. But, this is official stuff. The July lineup has already been
set.
I'm sort of just throwing this out there. If anyone would like to put their
two cents in, go for it.

What happened to shroom just shows what persistence can do, especially
in a smaller city. I think everyone who lives in smaller cities and
wants to meet the band should pay heed to what Shroom was able to do. I
was absolutely amazed at her luck, after seeing the security surrounding
the band in Chicago (not only their own security people, but venue
security too). Monnica wasn't it you who lost your guest pass and even
Erin couldn't get you past security until she got you another one? And
its probably the same in New York and LA. What Shroom did also took alot
of courage. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you really want it to
happen it seems there are ways to do it. The band is even more friendly
and approachable than I ever imagined. And more and more I see how
valuable this list is both to us and to the band. I wonder if those of
us who have been so lucky to meet them this tour would have been able to
do so if it weren't for their familiarity (and probably curiosity) with
the list. I kind of doubt it. So thanks again Seth for starting this
whole thing. And PLEASE don't let the list die when you graduate!

Subject: Holiday procedures - README
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I'm starting early this year...

I know many of you, especially those of you at school, will be going
away for the holidays and plan to be unsubscribing from the list while
you're gone. Please follow these guidelines for unsubbing during the
holidays:

1. Email me the DAY BEFORE you wish to stop receiving messages.

2. Do NOT email me and say "Can you unsub me 7 days from now and then
resub me on January 4?" I went through that last year and it wasn't
fun. Just email me the day before you want to stop receiving
messages and then email me when you get back and I'll resub you.
   Simple as that.

On another holiday note, I'll be in New York from December 18 to
January 2 (probably). I will be checking my email, but not as
frequently as I do at school, so if you try to unsub, and don't hear
from me for a couple of days, I apologize in advance for the
inconvenience. I will also be mailing out digests irregularly during
that time.

The next big holiday is, well, the rest of my life after June 6, when
I graduate. :) There are definitely going to be some changes at that
time with both the list and the website, but I hope to work it out in
January and I'll let everyone know what's up.

I actually think that the version of kyle petty on the _home
alive_ record is actually a re-recording of the song, and not just a remix
of the existing track/partials. at least that is what it sounded like to
me the one and only time I heard it. for instance, the bridge just before
kim's solo (which is basically ben and matt playing the main thud from the
intro) has a slightly different drum roll to the b-side version.

of course, it could be possible that matt did two alternate drum
takes, and brendan o'brien just used the second one which wasn't used on
the first version.

Subject: Re: Favorite Bands

Every once in a while a thread comes up involving people on the list who
say Soundgarden isn't their favorite band. This usually causes some back
and forth flaming, etc. I was just wondering how we break down: how many
people say Soundgarden is their favorite and how many have bands they
like better than Soundgarden but are on the list for reasons of their
own. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get anyone irritated, I'm
just curious.

I must admit, when I joined the list I just assumed everyone on it was a
die-hard Soundgarden fan. They are definitely my favorite, although I
like alot of other bands. I was surprised to see people say Soundgarden
wasn't their favorite, sometimes not even in the top three. It seems
like a lot of work to read the list and keep up with it for a band who
isn't your favorite (commendable, but for me it wouldn't be worth it).

When I found this list I was so thrilled to finally find other people as
devoted to Soundgarden as I am. Even when I don't post much I get great
satisfaction out of reading the digest and communicating with people who
share my interest in the band. So, clue me in those of you who don't
prefer Soundgarden. What is it you get from the list and what makes you
continue to wade through the mounds of posts. I'm not being critical, I
really want to know. I wonder what the percentages would be of SG as
favorite vs. SG not as favorite. Any input would be appreciated.

Yeah the LA shows was heavy security. Plus most of them were assholes.
They don't even let you stay around after the show. They immediately shove
you out. I don't know if that happens at all venues so don't laugh at me
and think to yourself "she doesn't know what she's talking about!" Anyways
after the first show in LA, we tried to get a set list and some picks
since the roadies were throwing them to the people that tried to stayed
behind. Oh yeah which reminds me...Dena, Christy and I met that one girl
that caused that flame war cuz she said she wore a short skirt and let
some drunk guy fondle her just so she could get closer to the band at
Lolla. Remember her? I think her name was Jennifer or Jessica. I forget.
But she's nice and wants everone to know that that's just how she dresses.
Anyways...back to what I was saying...we were trying to get the set list
and security just started
shoving us away and saying, "Move along folks. I need you to be leaving
the building." We couldn't even stay around outside unless it was like
near the parking structure.

Whoa, I'm rambling. sorry.

yep. gotta agree with you there. i read guitar world and used to be
heavily into guitar magazine too. they both have pretty good tab that
covers a few different musical styles. used to see tabbed hendrix,
soundgarden, and some classic rock bullshit that i enjoy playing myself.
even saw an issue where they had the complete score to a guns and roses
tune, drums and everything.
i would just love to see a heavy-duty feature on sg where they talked
to all the members of the band about everything: playing styles,
influences, equipment, blah blah blah... just, more soundgarden. make
that mag about 200 pages thick!
i think sometimes it sounds like i'm ragging. sometimes i am :)

my experience (or what I can remember of it) is similar to your's,
eliza. it was the first time I saw the band live, just before the release
of superunknown. in fact, I think it was only a week before the release
of the first single from that record, spoonman. so of course I hadn't
heard any of the new material from the upcoming album.

to digress for a moment, this was an interesting time for me.
till that year I had only been a casual fan of the band. sure, I owned
bmf/somms, but I knew little of the band or much of their previous three
records. but on a fateful summer's morning, I walked into a newsagency
and picked up the latest rolling stone magazine (sorry, chris) while
waiting for my girlfriend to meet me. I flipped through the first couple
of pages and came across an article regarding the australian big day out
music festival, and how soundgarden would be playing it for the first time
to support their new album.

I thought that was cool, but what really blew my socks off was the
full-page ad on the following page. an uncut version of the superunknown
cover (the one that *does* include matt) metaphorically hit me in the
face, and I was overwhelmed. the bmf cover art may be their best, but
there is little in the band's art catalogue which is as cool to me as the
screaming elf/burning forest artwork. my reaction is difficult to
describe. I was literally slavering for the album by that afternoon, that
much I can say.

oh...where was I? ah, concert experiences :) it was at that show
in january 1994 when I first heard the songs fell on black days and
spoonman. and even though that was the very first time I had heard them,
they moved me just as much as any other song they played that night
(including jcp and incessant mace); the immediacy of both songs was
incredible, and it has coloured my perspective on both since. I know that
spoonman doesn't get much respect on this list (skippers beware), but
since that show I have admired the song for it's infectuous beat and
perfect performance. maybe if I hadn't seen it played so well live, I
wouldn't enjoy it as much.
