From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

As the end of this semester rushes towards me, I find myself with a
stack of Soundgarden stuff to add to the website and no time to make
it happen. Be patient -- it will happen sooner or later. :) In the
case of the Song of the Month for December, it may happen this week.
If it doesn't, I'll probably wait until January. To those of you who
have sent me small or large quantities of stuff for the Soundgarden or
Hater sites, I will get to it as soon as I can, I promise.

The only thing more amazing to me than the fact that there are 700+
people on this list is that there are more than 800 HTML documents
within www.sgi.net/soundgarden/!

Eager to add another 100 by the end of January,

seth

One thing Anti-Dog left out of her otherwise excellent review of the del
mar show 11/30 was what I thought a highlight of both shows I saw(11/30
and 12/1), right after BUTOW, chris disposing of his guitar as they
launch full force into RHINOSAUR, it was killer to hear live. At the end
of the song, kim and ben transposed the main riff up their guitar necks
until they reached an explosive musical climax..then into HAO..I went nuts.
meeting other sommsters was way cool..maybe can hook up again before the
next tour.

comin' back down..

I can not verify any recent sightings regarding Slash and SG.
Kim talks about Slash and Mcduff In the July '96 Guitar World issue
Soundgarden feature.

GW:Early on,SG toured with overtly metal acts like Skid row and Guns&Roses.
What was that like?

Thayil:It was kind of fun.

GW:Did you get along with those guys?

Thayil:Yeah.I still occasionally see Duff[Mckagan] or Slash when I'm in L.A
or when they're up here in Seattle.Duff lives here,you know.When we're in
town we'll
play in their side bands or go see them, and with Skid Row,.......

Subject: Ben in magazines

Does anyone out there know if Ben has ever consented to be
interviewed by any bass or guitar magazines? I have searched the
articles on the page, but can't find any interviews with him.
also, does anyone know any specific info about how he gets that great
bass sound live and/or in the studio? I know that live he uses Mesa
Boogie amps and cabinets and Fender and Music Man basses, but does
anyone know about his wireless unit and any outboard gear he may use?
On Rusty Cage, it almost sounded like he had an octave pedal going.
Also, does he use flatwound strings?

I was listening to boot camp the other day on my personal cd player and i
noticed that during the intro you can hear someone talking in the
background like a tv.
Does anyone have any idea what this guy is saying? I listened to the song
over and over and couldn't figure it out.

thanks,

From earlier posts we seem to have decided it was some sort of a economy or
political related speech. If you listen you can hear a few key words that
points to this. Go back a listen to it using headphones & crank it up during
the intro & it may seem a little clearer.

With as much discussion we had on this a few months back I'm surprised this
question wasn't passed on to the band, since many of us (not including me who
wasn't any closer than 8 hours away) physically met the band. I guess it is
hard to do much more than say hi, ask for an autograph & say how much you
admire them. After meeting personal heroes over the years (Nolan Ryan, Greg
Graffin, etc) I know how it feels just avoiding tossing your cookie on their
shoes (c: <side note: I did meet Graffin in a bathroom & almost shook his
band with my pants still un-buttoned!>

seems to me that the singer gets all the attention regardless of
whether he sucks or not. why not talk about chris' guitar-playing
skills? since maybe ltl chris' guitar playing just gets better and
better. in fact, unlike bush or hole, the style that chris (and kim)
play in is pretty unique. maybe it doesn't seem so since so many people
are imitating the sound... and lanky ben rules the bottom.

> now why would a drummer like soundgarden? :)

 yes, why indeed ;)

the entire staff of guitar world talks trash. whatever is the trend,
whoever is selling and flooding the radio is glamourized and made to
seem godlike. for once i'd like to see a piece on sg that has some
substance. i don't want some kind of filler stuck in there to appease
people like me who think that this could be interesting and buy that
fucking rag.
i think that sg, both the music produced and the group of musicians who
create it, warrants an article that portrays them as more than a group
of freaks on the fringe of some dumb-ass musical movement. (read
critic-inspired buzzword that easily categorizes the placement of a cd
in a certain section of a record store).
as you already know, non-drummers also get off on matt's drumming...

for those of you who can't decipher this private meeage from deedee to
me, we are going to see.... TOOL in charlotte on friday. This is AFTER we
see TOOL on WEDNESDAY in RALEIGH!!!

what a way to wind down before finals....

SG content: i usually refer to matt as my favorite drummer. Well, like
time, my tastes.. they are a'changin'... I was listening to "jimmy" on
the new tool cd, and i realized that danny carey, the drummer, rarely
used the snare on that song outside of the chorus and heavy parts. He was
using the cymbals to keep time... but it was so subtle, that you had to
listen to find the beat. to me, that is pretty damn awesome.

and i've noticed something else. Carey seems to be more fluid on his
roll-offs than matt. Matt seems to start a roll and end roll-offs with
the same intensity and volume. Carey, on the other hand, seems to glide
in from nowhere and gradually crescendos (see all these music terms
seth?) to the end of the roll-off. he usally ends with a cymbal crash to
punctuate the intensity..

ladies and gentelman, i believe matt has been surpased (at least in my book).

Hell-o,
I have been seeking out other SG fanatics on this dam computer and I finally
found you. I didnt realize how may there were. Kinda give me this sick,
squirmy feeling in my belly. Call me selfish, but I thought I was the only
one truely addicted-to-them-in-a-bizzare-kind-of-way fan.

And now I am drawn to them like a zombie lemming....To hear you people talk
(or read it anyway) like about Chris's fork necklace. I love that fukn fork!!
Cant you just see it in their eyes tho, how sick and tired they are of the
media goons who hound them? I picked up a mag today just to read the 2 page
SG inteview, and Chris had this "I am so fukn sick of this I could puke" look
in his eyes. Does he seem more skinny and even pale lately? I hope he is OK.
I wish they would take a break from touring.

I feel like if I were to quit liking them, everyone else would settle down
too. Selfish shellfish. I actually had hoped to meet them someday. Not to
rape them or grab them, but just to talk to them in a normal kind of
way....This will not be possble tho because they are sooo huge right
now...they are totally unreachable.. and unfortunately, I am just a normal
everyday person, kinda...Have never seen them live. Montana just isnt a big
enough place..But I do have SG picks, and just for the first time listened to
Screaming Life and it is very excellent.. Of course, it would be...

Love to you all my people, and Shroom you are blessed!

Subject: 2nd L.A. show

Went yesterday to Universal Amphitheatre again for the second show in L.A.

They were good, but there's really not much I could add to the review of
the first show, since they played almost exactly the same songs.

The only change was the addition of Room A Thousand Years Wide (cool!)
instead of Search & Destroy and Waiting For The Sun. Also, they showed the
little movies this time. The one before BUTOW was definitely worth seeing.
Not sure about the other 2.

Before My Wave, Chris said something like: 'If you guys still have
subscriptions to Rolling Stone magazine, I have nothing left to bitch
about'. I probably got it wrong, though.

A comment that bugged me was when he introduced Hands All Over:
'This song is for the fans who've been following us for a long time'. When
he said that, I honestly thought they were gonna play something else than
the somewhat often played HAO. Do they think that nobody likes their
earlier stuff? Even if you've been a fan for only a couple years, why
wouldn't you like their SubPop and SST records?
If the band really wanted to please their die-hard fans, they
should include a couple more early songs, and they surely would change the
setlists from one night to the next more than they do, especially when they
play the same place 2 nights in a row...

I guess I sound pissed, but I'm just disappointed. I don't like to
admit it, but it wasn't worth going both nights.
