I heard that also. He was also in the KROQ studio on Sunday and they
replayed his interview with Tami Heide this morning(Dec. 2). Hopefully, he
will also be on Riki Rachtman's show this afternoon. That would be so
cool. Being that Riki also likes SG, he's sure to give an interesting

AntiDog writes:

Saw the Del Mar, Nov. 30th SG show. It was Super-Fab (more on that below).
The REALLY cool part though was meeting other SOMMSters before the show at a
local Mexican eatery. As stated in previous round-the-country posts, it was a
*trip* to be able to associate email names with faces; and, an even bigger
thrill that our southern California SOMMSters are so cool. Three or four
folks had met each other before, but for the remaining eight or so, it was an
exciting new world of walking up to large groups of people and asking, <Are
you the SOMMS group?> You know youve found the right group when they look
relieved to: A) see you, and B) see that youre not Jeffrey Dahmers evil twin.
Ha!

On to the openers: After hanging out with the SOMMSters crew for about
2-1/2 hours (not bad for a group of total strangers), we headed over to the
racetrack/fairgrounds venue, Crosby Hall. I caught the tail end of POND (does
that make it a puddle or a splash?) I thought they were okay... not bad
actually. But when RFTC came on, I was like, <Can we have POND back?> Theyre
a local band, and I make an effort to support the local scene (when its good)
but gawd I just cant get into RFTC. The time they spent on stage seemed
endless. In the interim I hung out with the SOMMS group, and bought the
long-sleeved SG shirt (for the low (NOT!), bargain basement price of $35 big
sardines!). There was also the rare concert going experience of some guys
urinating inside the venue walls because they did not want to wait in a
bathroom line that spanned half the length of the venue (literally hundreds
of men waiting for a quick pass at the urinals).

We also had sub-arctic temperatures last evening (even Cornell remaked on it,
and, alas, was so cold that he never removed his top-side ensemble), though
it seemed no one told the venues air conditioning hancho because there were
full force gale winds combined with frigid a/c billowing through the
tunnel-like venue (normally used as a Fair exhibition hall). It was clever
too how the venue organizers put the <beer garden> outside, in the freezing
weather.

On to SG: They were sooooo great, and though I wouldnt have thought it at
all possible, SG were even BETTER than in 94. They followed a similar, if
not identical, sort of routine as they have for the previous dates of this
tour:
- -opened with Spoonman
- -Cornell soloed on BHS
- - dedicated Rusty Cage to the <Man in Black>
- - dedicated <My Wave> to the Surfrider Foundation (also a PJ fave)
There was a good mix of DOTU with SU stuff, several off of BMF with the
encore close of JCP. Frankly, so much of the DOTU music is getting overplayed
on local radio (read: BIMH, PN, etc.) that while I thought it was really,
really well done, I was aching for the rarities. SG obliged with a lithe
rendition of Hands All Over and a SWMGEC version that was all that AND a jug
of milk.

The end of the performance featured the ubiquitous noise-assault, but Thayil
did it differently than in the past (that is, my past experience). He did the
noise, but he played it as noise by the amps, alone on the stage, and then
waved good-bye. It was another great evening of SG.

And what better prize for #20 than the soundtrack to SFW,
a movie that was probably nothing more than an attempt
to profit from the whole pissed-off-twentysomething
gen-x fad. Of course, I can't say for sure, since I
never saw it...but what the hell, it sounded like a

the acoustic Like Suicide, along with 11 other non-SG
tracks. There is even a runner-up prize this time (being
that this is the big two-oh), a cd called Hi Fi Way by the
band You Am I. The only SG connection is that this list
is where I heard about them.

He compares them to black saboth, yet in the start if the interview he
says he doesn't know what black saboth sounds like, so he doesn't know
what the hell he is talking about.
Another thing that gets me is how he can credit Chris with his vocals and
the rest of the band sucks. This isn't true, certainly soundgarden is more
talented then hole. Who has a wonderful drummer.
he says that there drummer likes Soundgarden, now why would a drummer like
soundgarden? :)
I don't see many drummers(Including myself) mentioning hole when asked who
there favorite drummers are.
The cover says Bush talks trash. So maybe the nice folks at guitar world

From: jlemerci@rain.artcenter.edu (Johann Lemercier)
Subject: L.A show (part 1)

Hi everyone!

Like Josh said, the 1st Soundgarden show at Universal Amphitheatre
last night was excellent. I'm actually surprised that I enjoyed it so much,
because I was afraid it would be too much like the previous SG gigs I'd
been to ('94-'95-'96).

I got there too late to see much of Pond, but the bit I saw sounded
good.
Then Rocket FTC. This band has received a huge promotion in France (where I
come from), so I was eager to know what is so special about them. I had
seen them on TV, so I already knew what to expect, but nothing beats
actually seeing a band live.
They were definitely OK, if you take them for what they are: a
bunch of rockabilly dudes who've picked up on punk and alternative
influences, creating their own style. Not exactly metal, but I'm open.. so
it was alright. I actually liked them 'cause they don't seem to take
themselves seriously BUT believe in what they do. It works, to me that's
the way it should be.

Still, I have to say when SG takes the stage after this kind of act, it
blows it all away! I remember thinking to myself, halfway during SG's set:
'Who could match this?' In terms of power, technical ability, and musical
elaboration, I think just about every band that's out there could take
lessons from our boys (on different levels).

After seeing yesterday's show, I feel they have taken a major step
forward with this tour. They sounded great each time I saw them before
that, but now you get the feeling that they have arrived: they're on top,
assuming their 'rock star status' and keeping their cool about it.
I don't know, I'm trying to say that they were showing not just
confidence, but even a certain serenity, as if being on stage every night
in front of very large audiences was now very well accepted and dealt with.

Here's what I thought of the guys individually:

Chris seemed so much at ease (voice problems apparently forgotten).
The first thing I noticed was the wonderfully happy smile he wore on his
face while walking on stage. It gave me the feeling that this was gonna be
good, and indeed it was. The great thing about Chris is he's always gonna
surprise you by singing songs a bit differently from one tour to the next
(not to mention from the albums). And he's always going to be right on
target. Due to his voice range and the variety of songs, he takes you from
one feeling to another without you noticing. Brain control!

Kim was.. well, he was just Kim! During the final feedback of JCP,
he was playing with his guitar on top of the amps, turning his back to the
crowd, mocking the Metallica/Beavis & Butthead/Hard Rock cliche with his
two fingers raised behind his head (Chris helped with the feedback,
standing on his guitar, hitting it with his feet)... Then Kim cheered the
crowd with his beer and left the stage a while after the rest of the band.

Matt was awesome as well, I'd say that as a general comment: he IS
the best drummer I have seen (and I've seen quite a few...), one of the
very best out there for sure. His playin' is dead-on, powerful and always
so damn appropriate. I mean, it's not like his style is revolutionnary, but
you just can't think of anything that he could improve: SG's force comes
from his pounding and constant fitting-in so perfectly.

Always save the best for last... Ben was my focal point all night
long. True, I was a bit closer to his side of the stage than Kim's, but
there is something about ben that draws your eyes to him. Not like carisma
(wrong spelling probably?) but definitely something in his
'I-don't-want-the-attention
so-I-stay-in-the-dark-but-I-make-faces-at-people' attitude. He might seem
pissed off, bored, or dedainous, but I truly don't think he is. During
Searchin' he was moving mechanically, marching military-like. Gotta love
the guy.

As a whole band, they were musically really tight together, but
didn't interact much otherwise. Ben and Kim did get together or look at
each other at some points, but that's about it (Ben went to hide behind the
drum kit during Slaves). Kim didn't exit the stage with the others before
the encore. I think he was waiting in the dark to the left of the stage
(you could see his cigarette lit).

From: jlemerci@rain.artcenter.edu (Johann Lemercier)
Subject: L.A show (part 2)

On to the show itself:

The show started "slowly" with Spoonman, from where I expected them
to go on with Searchin', which was the case. I thought to myself: 'same
old, same old...'
But by the time they got to the end of Searchin', my mind had changed
totally: this version ROCKED! By far the best I've heard, live anyway. All
the power of SG came through, and man did it feel good!

Let Me Drown, full of strength, then Pretty Noose, such a good song!
I recognized the intro to Burden In My Hand instantly, but not the vocal
melody: Chris sung it much softer and lower than on the album - no big
scream here-, it was really nice though.
BTW, no movies or anything tonight, except for the same lighting
effects as previously on this tour (including the big projector atop Kim's
amp directed towards the crowd at the end).

One thing I noticed was how the crowd seemed relatively calm.
Didn't cheer much for the older songs or the covers, and surprisingly
didn't get crazy for BHS either. There was hardly any crowdsurfing or
moshing (I was right behind the pit). Chris picked up on that too, saying
something like: 'Hey! You seem quiet to me! I'm not used to it'. I bet he
isn't!
It got really strange after Search & Destroy: there was hardly
anybody screaming or whistling. It seemed rather quiet for a moment, given
such a large crowd. So I yelled for them to play Nothing To Say, but didn't
get my wish... Have they played it on this tour? This Year? Last Year? Or
any pre-BMF song for that matter (save for Hands All Over)?

My Wave followed, then Ty Cobb, which at least was one song on
which everybody seemed to wake up! Chris introduced it by saying 'we keep
on doin' videos, but the only song I really wanted to shoot a video for is
this one".

The guys started exiting the stage and I knew it meant Chris was
gonna sing BHS. Nice of course, but not a terribly exciting rendition. It
was still much better than at last year's Reading Festival, in the UK. It
was really bad there, so if they have to play it I guess it's better Chris
does it solo. Also, the good thing about this version is that it made
Outshined seem so much more powerful when they jumped into it right after!
Outshined, Rusty Cage and Fell On Black Days were the only songs
that weren't better this time than the previous times I've heard them live.
Read: they sounded great as always:) :) :)

Okay, so this far, it was a good night. Then it turned to perfect...

I was hoping for Helter Skelter, having read that they play it
often on this tour. What I didn't know was that it was a slow version! So I
didn't recognize it at first, but this intro teased me... It was a cool
feeling to finally realize: 'Hey! this IS Helter Skelter!'
As in previous shows, it was nicely linked to Boot Camp. Then,
BUTOW came, and it was the first time I heard it live. 'Wow' is all I can
say!

At this point, I was thinking: 'Oh, this is soon gonna be over.
They'll jump into Slaves (if we're lucky) and leave the stage. Maybe
they'll throw in a cool surprise in the encore?'.

Wrong. The highlights came *before* the encore.

They played 2 more covers! Search & Destroy (Great! Ben was terrific),
followed by Waiting For The Sun (3rd time I hear it live by SG)! This one
was 'Dedicated to Johnny' by Chris. ? He didn't mean Johnny Cash, since he
had already mentionned 'the Man in Black' before Rusty Cage earlier on.

So what was going to come next? Not Slaves yet... Hands All Over!!
I went nuts! It seemed like not many people around me knew it, which didn't
put me down. You can't blame someone for not knowing a song, so I just
enjoyed it for myself.
Wouldn't it be nice, though, to have SG play a special concert, say
once a year in Seattle, where they'd play mostly oldies, covers, b-sides
only for the extreme fans who are bound to enjoy it? *sigh* Dreams...

Again, I thought it was over, but they did play Slaves as the
cherry on top of the cake! For me it was killer! Kim was maniacal.. It
sounded like they could go on for the whole night playing, but they'd
probably be deaf by morning!

The encore was nothing but the expectable: Dusty: loved it, but
should that really be an encore? I mean, they have such a great back
catalogue.. I don't even think Dusty is the best song on DOTU.
And then the awesome JCP, with the great Matt intro, and the
monstrous Kim feedback outro which I already told you about.

The show was over, but not the night. No, no, I didn't get
backstage this time, but I met with other SOMMSters (nice sign, Christy!
especially the back of it..) and it was cool getting to know other fans
from the list. We hung out together until 1:30 I think.
I definitely had a great night, and it was great to share it with a

There's an article on Karen in the University of Washington's 'The Daily'
at http://www.thedaily.washington.edu

Excerpts from 'Soundgarden mom sounds off':
"Numerology is a science, like astrology, and it's based on the idea that
we are energy beings living in an energy universe...We are all a study in
energy based on the minute we hit planet earth on a specific date at a
specific time with a specific name...all geared to give you what you need
to accomplish; what the soul came here to accomplish at this time...People
vilifying others by their narrow little standards will ultimately get
judged by those same standards...My view is a very spiritual one, which
includes that Jesus was a master teacher...What he said was 'Everything I
do you can do, and more.' He was teaching reincarnation...you can look at
Confucius, Buddha, Mohammad, Jesus. The teachings were always the same.
And what were they? 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.'
Period. That's all they taught, the rest having been made up by people to
control other people. What I do is come to truth as I know truth. And
truth is truth -- you can't screw with it. It's not my job, nor anyone
else's on this planet, to be judgmental...everyone is on their own path,
where they're supposed to be, learning whatever it is they need to learn
...I spent 20 years in the Catholic church. I always tell people I became
Catholic by choice and I unbecame Catholic by choice...Learn to love every
person unconditionally...If you are ready and willing to change your ideas
and change how you do things you're going to flow with the planet just
fine...there is a lot of positive energy out there. I'm very hopeful
about the future."

I was wondering if someone who is going to a Soundgarden show soon would pick
me up some shirts. I didn't have enough money to get them when I went but
now I do. The only problem is, I'm not going to another show. If you would
PLEASE help me out I would greatly appriciate it. I will pay you for the
shirts and we can work it out some way so you will get your money as soon as
possible. I'm very flexable on working something out. PLEASE, PLEASE help
me out. (I know that I sound really desperate, but can't you tell that I
AM!!!) E-mail me privately if you will take pity on me and do this minor
task for me.
Well, I think I have begged enough for now!!!

Toodles & Love,
Kelly

P.S. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE(okay, now I'm really finished begging!!)

Does
anyone else have October Rust and agree with me???

Hi John,

Yes, thanks to my friend Aleko I have October Rust. And I like it! :-) =
(would you be interested to know that a VERY reputable [said seriously, =
not sarcastically!] magazine only gave it 1 star out of 5 last month??)

Oh, and it seems I've finally joined the land of the lucky. Don't know =
whether it was Shroom's posts that prompted this, but last night I =
actually had a dream about Soundgarden. Delete now i you're not =
interested! :-)

They were playing at my old home town (which has a population of about =
1500 - as if SG would play there), in a huge tent on a grassed oval. I =
got there early, and stood on the grass near the front of the stage. =
Didn't need to worry - only about 200 people showed up! But still they =
were good. They begain with Spoonman, and then the next song was a =
Doors one, and my friends went wild, but I remember being a little =
pissed off at them because I knew they didn't know any of the SG ones, =
except a few of their singles. JCP came on (that was played on the =
radio here yesterday, by the way), and I was right at the front still, =
only a foot or so away from the stage, which was only a foot high. My =
hair was sitting behind my shoulders, down my back, and all of a sudden =
CC leaned towards me during a Matt Cameron solo and yelled in my ear "is =
your gorgeous blonde hair long?" (weird question). I smiled and nodded, =
at which time my hair fell forward. His eyes nearly popped out of his =
head, and he screamed to me "I LOVE long hair!" I couldn't give a razz =
about my hair - all I wanted to tell him was that I am on this mailing =
list! I leaned forward to him, put one hand behind his neck (which was =
horribly sweaty) and the other hand cupping my mouth up to his ear and =
said "I'm on the Somms [I said the word Somms with a real American =
twang, so he'd understand me! :-)] mailing list". His eyes widened even =
further, and he stated "You're Carolyn, right?". I nodded. Then he had =
to go back to singing.=20

And then I woke up! Strange. I hope this means that at least I'll =
accomplish what I hope to when I see them at the BDO next year (wow, =
that's already next MONTH!) - to say hi to at least one of them and let =
them know I'm on this mailing list.

[sigh]
Back to the mundane world of working..........
Carolyn the Master Fawn
I awoke the same as any other day......Soundgarden
