Subject: Black day fell on me.

"Somebody's best friend died" until Thursday those were just words in a
Soundgarden song (the one Ben..jammin wants them so badly to play) but now
they are talking about me. My best friend, David died on Thanksgiving
afternoon. He was diagnosed with AIDS in April 95. And in that time it has
been very difficult to watch a loved one die by inches. Sometimes the
sadness overwhelms you. But in the last 15 months I have had an "out" so to
speak and that is where all of you come in. I could come home from spending
endless hours watching him struggle to survive during one of his hospital
stays and bring in my mail and forget about all the pain for a little
while. Sometimes the things people posted would make me laugh, sometimes it
would make me angry but it would give me time to go somewhere else for a
little while. And I want to thank you all for that. He did not like my
Soundgarden activities in fact he seemed jealous and told me I was trying to
make new friends to replace him when he was gone but what he didn't realize
was the list was a lifeline for me. It would pull me out of sorrow and give
me companionship and happiness. In one month I went from the joy of
Sommsfest in Chicago and the prefect weekend to having one of the longest
most painful days in my life. It's amazing but it is also what we call life!
And it goes on! And this morning as I sat at 4:30am unable to sleep,
through swollen red eyes I read Shroom's post about meeting the band and I
smiled the first time in 24 hours and I was happy for her. To all of you
that "know" me well and care. I am OK! I'll be in touch. And to David
"Guess there's only one thing left to be said....Say hello to heaven"
I'll miss you........toni

Just found this on the Digital Grafiti list..thought you all might want to
see it, its rather interesting.

"Like their earliest model, Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden gives their
songs
a big bottom, not to mention Cornell's choirboy-from-hell vocals,
which owe
a big debt to Led Zep's Robert Plant. Both bands offer heavy metal
(! - my
exclamation - je) for people who don't necessarily like metal, and
they both
attract a larger female audience than most hard-rock
outfits...(interesting
to refer to LZ attracting live audiences in the present tense,
isn't
it?
        I wish - je)

The difference is in restraint and the stripped-down rawness the
Garden boys
learned from punk. (warning! Jimmy/LZ fans!...extreme outrage
coming... - je) Soundgarden's Kim Thayil doesn't play the guitar
with a violin bow or any of
that hokey stuff. In fact the closest he came to an extended
guitar
solo was
on a cover of the Stooges' "Search and Destroy"... (somebody hold
me back
before I rip Michael Corcoran a new one...well, I guess musical
taste and
intelligence vary...and some people have neither! - je)

Subject: Soundgarden live in MY living room!!!!!

Not really (unfortunately), but how do you follow Shroom!!!!? It's just my
report on MTV's Soundgarden Live n Loud...

Well, it turned out to be five songs recorded live in the MTV studio in
London and intercut with short clips of the band introducing each song. I
think they were somewhere like LA for that because it was very sunny (Chris
wore shades) and they were sitting on the ground against a whitewashed wall.
They were trying to stop laughing through most of this - sort of, what the
hell am I doing here holding an MTV microphone and introducing an MTV
special!? Ben couldn't even *look* at the camera.

Songs in order:

Burden in my hand
Spoonman
Blow up the outside world
Mailman
Black Hole Sun

Musically they were brilliant (no surprises there!)Luckily MTV didn't
indulge in *too* much of their epilepsy inducing camerawork so we got lots
of close ups - of the guitars as well, guys! :-)

Highlights were Chris and Kim introducing Blow Up

Kim to Chris: Did you mention we're better than the Beatles?
Chris: I thought we *were* the Beatles
Kim: Well right! I thought it was God.

During Spoonman, where the spoon bit usually comes Chris did this cool thing
with his guitar. Kind of staccato plucking with the plectrum on one of the
bottom strings and using the rings on his left hand as a slide. Sorry, I'm
not very good on the technical explanations, but it sounded great!

Fashionwise - Chris was in his now customary black. He had a badge pinned
to his lapel but I couldn't read it.

Ben: the leather trousers!

Kim (for Toni and USDeb): hair tied back, but no baseball hat. Striped shirt
over (I think) Tool tee shirt.

Matt: Screaming Trees Dust tee shirt.

Anyways, I hope everyone gets the chance to see it sometime on their local MTV.

BTW I have just come across a couple of interesting Soundgarden articles
from Seconds in 90 and 91, which I will be sending to Seth in the next
couple of weeks. But as a taster...

"Madonna could sing 'Michael row your boat ashore' and still give guys
boners" - Chris

"I see the whole music industry as this crusty old dude, trying to take a
shit and it can't come out." - Matt

"Like the slow, arduous torture of all-night sex with an ugly heifer,
'garden's groove is nasty and unpleasant, but ultimately gets the job done
in a perversely satisfying way." - the interviewer

hi jamie and everyone else--

i saw hype on wednesday night and enjoyed it very much. very entertaining and
informative. the theater was not as crowded as i expected--we got there 40
minutes early, but it didn't matter much. there were 3 of us, but no one from
the somms list could go. (guess i will have to wait until the pizza party at
jamie's to meet everyone!)

the first part of the film inspired me, like "hey, you know what? i should
go buy a guitar and form a band!" the second half made me feel like a sucker
for buying into all of the "hype." not that it detracted from my love of the
music (that is very real), but i felt kinda nerdy for my numerous pilgrimages
to seattle and subpop-land and buying doc martens (a least i bought them in
the uk!) etc.

as you probably already know, sg performs nothing to say, but it is portrayed
through a photo montage, not live footage (if my memory serves me...). hiro
gets a definite nod. by the way, kim thayil gets *a lot* of screen time
(matt is with him, but doesn't speak much.) the lighting in these scenes is
quite warm and flattering for kim and matt--they both look very handsome.
also susan--gosh, she is definitely deserving of chris--comes off as very
intelligent and looks absolutely beautiful (even in close-up!.)

i bought the soundtrack yesterday and it looks great. i recommend the flick
and the cd to everyone on the list.

that's it for now,

About my experience in the Houston show.

The day of the show I have to go to class at 7:30 A.M. go to the airport
take the flight at 12:15 I arrive in Houston at 1:30. Go to my hotel in a
bus, that took like one hour, and check in. Then in my room I decided to
call Ticketmaster to check my reservation to pick my tickets and they told
me that they have a problem because I don't have my credit card and that if
I want to pick my tickets I have to arrive early. I only remember that I run
to take a taxi and go to the International Ballroom. I arrive there at 4:30
P.M. and when i pay the taxi I heard the intro of "Head Down", one of my
favorite songs, I went nuts running around the place trying to find a window
or something to see but the place . They played the whole song and it
sounded amaizing without any interference, just the band playing. Then
totally frustrated for not finding any place to see inside I get back in
line, only three people where early than me The soundcheck continued and
played "Mailman", a little jam, and "Rhinosaur". The weather started to get
colder and colder, I lend my jacket to a girl next to me that only had a
t-shirt on,I started to feel a little ansious. Finnally around 7:00 P.M. the
door opened, I don't have any problem to get my ticket it was just a
misunderstending and they were sorry.

After that I checked the shirts and bought one. And when I was looking for a
place to see the show I see a redhaired woman, It was Shroom, what a
wonderful girl, I introduce myself and we started talking. We see together
Pond and RFTC, and before SG we split because I preffer to see the show in
the middle and she go to the front. The show was allready reviewed so I only
will say that it was incredible, definitely worth it, all the show were
amaizing. Special highligths: Matt's drums in Pretty Noose, Rhinosaur, even
better than the soundcheck, and of course JCP ; the cover of Helter Skelter,
My Wave, Outshined, Hands all Over, FOBD and Black Hole Sun, for many time
that song was death for me and Chris solo version was so refreshing and
different.

After the show I see Shroom again and we go to the back to wait for the
band. I was so excited about coming to the show that I never thought of
actually meeting the band. So we wait in the bus stop for hour and a half,
the singer and drummer of Pond started to talk with the guy and the girls
there. Pond are really nice people.

After a while Matt came out and started to sign autographs to all the
people there, Shroom and I were the last and then Matt recognize Shroom that
was so incredible and totally unespected, so Shroom hand Matt her DOTU book
and he signed and I feel horrible because I don't anything to give Matt to
sign and Shroom very generous give me the back of the DOTU book so I could
have his autographs. When I tell Matt I came from Mexico he stops signing
and looks directly at me and says somenthing like that is so cool and ask
me if I like the show. I only could say yes. Then Matt go inside a bus. After
that the soundman, who looks like a Kim relative, came and give Shroom and
me some guitar picks and start telling a story about Eddie Vedder. Then we
go to the band's bus and Kim was there signing autographs and been very
gently and funny with the people there, meanwhile Ben was inside the bus
looking at us with a huge smile all the time.

After all I just can say that past Tuesday was one of the most important
nights in my life and I want to thank Shroom for beign so incredibly nice to
someone she didn't know, wish I could have gone with you to the Austin show,
and Seth for running the list that make able Soundgarden fans to meet and
help each other and without the list I would never know about the shows.

Subject: Re: Cornell/Plant-A 'nice' analogy about soundgarden

I read this review in the 'Austin American Statesman' newspaper too..... and
you just have to take in account that Michael Corcoran just is um... not very
'smart'. (he's an idiot!!)
Another thing that the always remarkable Corcoran brought up in the review
titled -Soundgarden connects with bare, polished metal-, was that "The set's
Most Valuable Player award goes to Ben Shepard. I wasn't near Ben for most of
the concert but from what I saw he was almost falling asleep it seems...

Corcoran went on with this analogy or watever u call it saying "If the
Garden sound was a room, the bass would be the bed. In Shepherd's hands(and
framed by the powerhouse drumming of Matt Cameron), the bass was somethign to
sit on, like on and sink into. It was where the love was made."

heh, that's a way to put it i guess, but despite all of Corcoran's many
unintelligent reviews, this one for SG turns out to be a postive one.
which it better have been or i would have written this newspaper guy myself.

owell..laterz,

Subject: BMF in a box

okay guys, i saw one today. i saw one of the 1000 worldwide editions
of BMF in that white wooden box thing. it was purty neato. except the
wrapping was taken off (the plastic wrap) and anyone could open it up,
which obviously isn't a good idea anyways. well, so i took advantage
of that fact and opened it up, took off the cardboard packaging
around it as well, and pulled it out. it was, well, boring looking
outside. it was white with a maroon circular saw thing, and a maroon
and black sparkplug in the middle of that. not very intricate. so i
opened THAT up and the BMF CD is in there and so is the regular
insert that would have been in a jewel cased CD. inside was a little
nicer. the fuzzy thing for the CD was black and the fuzzy thing for
the insert was maroon. the insert was in great condition, but the CD
hadn't faired so well. there was also this little black ingraved
plate that said "limited edition 68 of 1000" so it was a good find i
guess. but the CD itself looked to have a few light scratches on the
back and one not so light scratch. the price for this Lt Ed was $54.
95 or something like that, which is expensive. my question is, if i
were to argue the condition of the CD inside, could i possibly get
them to sell it to me for maybe $10 less? and the biggest question,
is it even worth it to buy this thing now that the CD isn't in it's
mint condition?

and i found both editions of the BIMH cd today, and the little white
paper sticky thing, it said "burden in my *mind* #1" on it instead of
BIMHand. is that rare? maybe not because they all said it.
also saw the PN single w/o the poster. and one of the FoBD singles
(w/ kyle petty + Birth ritual) used and cracked for $4.99. *sigh* and
a Skin Yard single (didn't see which one...SORRY!) used and in good
condition for only $3.99 or something. AND i also saw the boxed
version of the AITS cd+. neat. *AND* i also saw the DOTU Lt Ed vinyl
(clear, i'm supposing because i didn't make the guy open it up and i
wasn't going to buy it, i'm not much for vinyl) for only $11.99.

oh, and my BIMH single that i bought is from the UK. it's not the
poster one, so it only has BIMH and Karaoke on it. i've never heard
talks of this version before. i thought the other version had Birth
ritual and something else on it as well?? am i wrong?

well, enough of me for today. BTW, where IS everyone???

Subject: The Phoenix show.

I think that I was the only person from the list who went to the show in
Phoenix, so I'll give you my impressions. Hopefully, my friend (Mr.
Journalism major) will give his review to the list.
I guess I'll just tell you all the quirky, cool things that I noticed
about the show.

- -first off, I should've gotten a little camera to bring in. They barely
frisked me (this was the least I've ever gotten frisked in Phoenix), and I
was right up front.

- -Oh, is anyone noticing that concerts are beginning to appeal to the
junior high crowd. Now, I'm only 19, but I felt like the oldest one
there! And those 12 years olds are so stupid! I saw the same little kids
crowd surfing and going over the barricade. But the only good thing about
that was that when they landed on my head, they were light.

- -Crowds pretty much suck. My neck is killing my from having 3 people land
full on my head. And my ribs are sore from being smashed against the
barricade. But I'm so glad that I held my ground and didn't get pulled
back. The stage was quite close to the barricade. And I was also glad
that the stage was quite low. I love being up close and personal.

- -They played Hands All Over!!!! My friends and I were so stoked that they
played a pre-BMF song!!!!

- -ok, here's the funniest thing about the whole show. Chris says, "this
song is dedicated to all the turkeys who are all now in Turkey Heaven"!!!!
Being a vegetarian, I cracked up so hard at this comment. They he did BHS
solo again.

- -Now, no one has mentioned anything about show times before. The PHX show
started at 5. After the crowd let off after the show was over, I looked
at my watch...it was 8:20!!!!!!!!!!! 8:20?!?!?! Now, I was happy because
I got to drive home (2 hours away), but shit!!! That's so early!
Did this happen anywhere else, or is it just a Phoenix thing? I'm
starting to think that the Mesa Ampitheater is too concerned about getting
all these 12 year olds to bed before 10pm!

- -I didn't get to see much of Matt, but he made me laugh when he came out
for the encore...he did a CARTWHEEL! It was so funny. Chris thought so
too because he laughed.

- -Another Matt thing, he was playing guitar with Chris (well, it was sort
of just feedbacky noise) before Blow Up the Outside World when they were
showing that movie thingy. It was quite cool because Matt was standing up
by his drums so he was silhouetted against the screen.

- -Ben makes me laugh too. For the first half of the show, he was doing
little dances and such...but near the end, people were pissing him off.
The people I was w/ say he's an asshole, but I think he's just easily
aggitated.

- -Also, Ben smashed his bass to bits after Jesus Chrsit Pose.

- -My friends made a good observation: Ben looks like he's up there just
doing a job. He looked like he was not enjoying himself or the music.

- -Hey, and during all the Down on the Upside singles so far, there were
visuals on that background screen. But then they also had images for
Dusty....so I was wondering, do you think that Dusty will be the next
single?

- -Well, I guess that's most of my observations about the show. Oh,
everyone kept all their clothes on for the whole show. I don't blame them
either,,,,it was fucking cold! True, Phoenix is warm, but when it's
nighttime in November, it's only 50 degrees! I wish it would've been
indoors.

If there was no crowdsurfing, I'd say that this, my 4th SG show, would've
been -the- perfect concert.

bye

I think you can get it still at Tower Records.

Hey there,
The song you are referring to would be Kyle Petty, Son of Richard. It's
a b-said for a few singles including FOBD and a different mix appears on
the Home-Alive compilation.

The single you bought is part one of a two-part box set, and the

I think the single with Birth Ritual you were referring to, is the Australian

Well, by now you have read Shroom's and all the other SOMMSters posts and I
really don't have anything to add except the show was GREAT. The opening
bands really didn't do a whole lot for me because I was so ready for
Soundgarden to take the stage. I was very amused at watching the dancer of
RTC. He was quite entertaining, i guess. It was a way to pass the time. I
was really close to the front and then got pushed to the middle but I could
see just fine. The empty Safeway was one big mosh pit at first but after a
while it calmed down where I was. All and all I have to say it was a
kick-ass show. I have to admit that Chris being shirtless only made it
better!!!!! The sound was good, the band was GREAT, and I made it out alive.
The only thing I regret is not getting to meet any other SOMMSters. Maybe
next time. Take care everybody and stay out of trouble!!!!!

Subject: POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME CURED BY MASSIVE DOSES OF SOUNDGARDEN!

i was digging through my studio the other day and stumbled upon a book i
had purchased over the summer. it is a cd-size book called
"soundgarden" by jon ewing. it is published by carlton press. i
remember finding it in the cd section of my local wannabe music store.

the book however does kick ass. the pictures inside include pictures of
the band (from early days up until suPErUnkNOWn), individual pictures,
pictures of various seattle bands that pioneered and followed the
"grunge-rock" movement, a picture of malfunkshun, seattle, kurt cobain,
and other gems.

the book is divided up into:

	introduction
	early days
	making waves
	growing up in the garden
	the growth of grunge
the garden take on the world
	chronology
	discography

the book offers some incredible quotes and affords some great insight
into the band, each of its members, and the seattle scene in general.
some examples:

"i loved the fact that electric guitar was loud and a way to flip
everyone off"
			~~Kim

"we made a huge mistake with ultramega. . .we left our home
surroundings"
			~~Chris

"as a fan, i felt weird when jason joined the group"
			~~Ben Shepherd

"andy [wood] did drugs because he enjoyed doing it. . ."
			~~Kim

"from 11 to 14, i did drugs every single day"
			~~Chris

"someone else's misery, can often be a great opportunity for a song"
			~~Chris

these are just a few quotes from the book. there is even a small
section dealing with the bmf/somms discs!

if you would like more information about this book or other books from
this company, here is the address to send to:

Subject: Austin Show

Hello SOMMSTERS . . .

Long time no post, but I just returned from my fucking expedition around
Texas -- from Dallas to Austin to Houston to Shulenberg (don't ask where that
is) and back to Dallas .... all in the name of Soundgarden and Thanksgiving
dinners with the relatives.

Shroomster has provided the ultimate Austin recap, so I'll keep this
brief...went to the show with a couple of other old school Soundgarden
fans.....I was greatly anticipating my 4th time to see the guys, one of
friends tried to pretend like he was too old for live shows...he changed his
attitude afterwards, after an intense show....

well, we got there at the end of RFTC, drank some beers as I scanned the
maddening throng for Shroom....I finally gave up on trying and figured I'd
see her by accident or not at all. When the lights went down, I quickly lost
any intention of staying away from the front...I sprinted along the left side
to the speakers, and started working to the stage. After three great songs
filled with position jockying, in which I cursed myself for a lack of aerobic
conditioning, I made it the second row of humanity next to the barricade,
just to my left of Ben (who wins the motherfucking bad mood of the year
award). I was constantly smushed, but in solid position.....there were a
whole group of females in front of me, so I had the task of fending of the
crush behind me without jamming my elbows and a hands into the backs of the
girls...

so I look over, and of course Shroom is 10 inches to my right...I poke her on
the head and stupidly try to talk....I was actually right behind you for the
whole encore, Shroom, trying not to jam you in the back with my elbows : )
After they left, I once again swore to renew my health club
membership....and actually watched Shroom walk off, but was too tired to
chase ( sounds like I should have stayed with you Shroom...contratulations)
the group I was with kicked around the idea of waiting by the tour bus for
about, oohhhh, three seconds before we retired for an evening of beer
consumption.

BRIAN'S INTERACTION WITH THE BAND:

Brian: Hey Ben!

Ben: What?

Brian: What's up?

Ben: My cock!

Brian: <<laughs>>

What a guy, eh? Shroom, did you hear this? I know you heard me ask if he
was gonna spit on us, but he didn't hear me....such the pouter, that Ben.
Bass players arn't usually so morose, Ben.....Sid Vicious commited murder
and then OD'd...top that and then we'll talk... : ) just kidding......

Matt, if you are reading....fucking phenom on JCP...you are the shit
Kim on every song, quite a player..
Chris, well what can you say.....when he came a sang directly in front of us,
and Shroom stuck her tounge out, the crowd stopped pushing, kicking,
elbowing...moving, . . . and stared....what a presence that guy has. I
hope he ate well at Thanksgiving, though....

Well that's it....nothing to look forward to for a while...I think I need a
pilgrimage to Seattle sometime...Shroom is kicking the living shit out of me
as far as band interaction goes...song dedications, flirting, hugs, food,
autographs, gifts... all I have is a 1992 high five from Chris and Ben's
above mentioned "more information than I needed" conversation....
JUST ONE fucking e-mail from Matt Cameron and I'd be happy for a while.... or
not...
: )

Later....Brian

Hey all you Soundgarden freaks! (me included)

I don't post that much (about once a aweek) but now I have a very
serious question...Well not really that serious. Anyway!! Enough of my
rambling....On with the question

If you could ask Soundgarden or any member of the band one and ONLY one
question what would it be and why?

I know it sounds really juvinille(sp) but hey,,who cares if it is.

I would ask them expecially Chris how they come up with their lyrics?
Really guys, there is so much to just the words of their songs besides
the music...

Well just wondering..c-yas

Allright, well i was reading my trusty Guitar World magazine and in it
there was an article/interview with Bush.
In the interview, their fag frontman GAvin Rossdale had this to say:
"I can't really work my way through Soundgarden, that lot. A bit turgid,
that...A fuckin' horrible heavy rock band." If you dig through that
English dribble, I think he said soundgarden sucked....Excuse me but if
soundgarden didn't exist, neither would bush.
He goes on,"I mean Chris Cornell is obviously an amazing singer. He's
probably got the best rock voice you can have, technically. And
occasionally he writes these great Beatles-y songs, like "Black Hole Sun,"
which are really fantasitic. I also llike pretty noose." Wait i have it
figuered out, GAvin is a 15 year old girl who watches MtV all day.

Later Gavin tells us how good Hole is.

werent that many great albums released this year. I also like Aenima, but
even more so I like October Rust by Type O Negative. Im sure there are
others, but I can't think of any right now (symptom of the times??) Does
