Well for an old Safeway store it wasn't too bad. SG were great, although I
think Ben was having a bad time - probably didn't like the venue (can't blame
him). For other female fans who'll appreciate this, Chris was shirtless for
the entire show, with the rest of the guys dressed in black. They opened
with Spoonman and ended with Jesus Christ Pose that rocked!!! I guess all
the fans who were at the show only own the most recent album because the when
they played Hands All Over and JCP people around me were just standing there.
And I was so Excited!! Anyhow, I had a fantastic time. Thought that
Chris's voice sounded good and they put on a great show. This is the third
time I've seen them and the smallest show I've seen them at which I thought
kicked ass because I could get closer to the stage.

Whats weird is that the US version had the video sort of censored.
They covered the part up where someone was shooting up. Now in the
times I have seen it in the past couple of days it's not that much
censored anymore. They took off the cover up.

Subject: houston (long post, but worth it IMHO)

Hey everyone!! I finally got to go to my first SG show! I had the greatest
time. Except for my parents constantly bitching about getting lost on the way
down there. For anyone who's interested, we drove 4 and half hours for this
show. It was me, my friend Stacie, and both my parents. Kind of weird that
my parents came, but they paid for everything so it was cool.
We got there just after Pond had started playing. They aren't too bad. Then
RFTC came on. The only one of their songs I liked was On A Rope. I couldn't
understand what the fuck he was saying on every other song so I guess that's
why they didn't appeal to me, although Stacie though the tambourine/trumpet
guy was fine. But by the end of their set, I couldn't wait for them to get
off the stage. I know it's a mean thing to say, but hey, SG was next.
When the guys came on-stage, I was screaming my lungs out ( I apologize to
the two guys in front of me for that). The place went completely wild when
they started playing Spoonman. I wasn't even close to the front and I got
pounded and sprayed with beer. When Searching... started, everyone calmed
down (except for me of course) because I don't think they'd ever heard that
song before. Anyway, things went pretty much like that. The radio songs got
lots of yelling and the rest just got applause at the end from the audience.
They played these songs (I couldn't remember the order if I tried):
Spoonman, Searching..., Let Me Drown, Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves and
Bulldozers, My Wave, Fell On Black Days, Helter Skelter/Boot Camp, BUTOW, BHS
(Chris only as you already probably know), Pretty Noose, Rhinosaur, Hands All
Over, Ty Cobb (I loved that one), , BIMH.
Encore: JCP

Only one song for encore. I loved the Kim toasting the crowd and chugging
the beer bit. CC was right, for the place being and old Safeway, the sound
was excellent. I heard every word said. There was some feedback from the
mic during FOBD and BUTOW, but besides that, everything was incredible. The
highlights for me were Rusty Cage, Hands All Over and Ty Cobb, although every
song kicked ass.
Ben didn't do much for the first couple of songs, then he moved over to Kim's
side of the stage and played there for a while and told Kim something which
made him laugh. I guess maybe someone threw something at him because when he
finally went back over, he stood really far away form the edge of the stage.
At some point he went up to Chris's mic and basically told some "fucking
piece of shit" what he could do with himself. Later he griped at "hatboy"
for throwing shit. A couple of songs later Ben went back over and waved his
hand in front of Kim's face. I thought that was funny and Kim didn't even
blink. He is one fucking incredible guitar player. Matt was awesome. He
was just pounding away back there. He was hard to see because of all the
smoke and weird lighting, but every once and a while I'd see his hair flying
around.
Chris's voice sounded good. There were a couple of parts in the first couple
of songs that just made me cringe, but once he got rolling, it was beautiful.
And the best part (visually): Chris took off his shirt. Not just for the
encore. It came off in the third or fourth song. I know Shroom must have
been up there jumpin' for joy. I know Stacie and I were.
Well, I guess that's all for Houston. My ears are still ringing, literally.
I probably shouldn't have stood three rows back from the speaker during
Pond's and RFTC's sets, but oh well. My eyes still burn when I close them
from getting so dried out because of all the smoke. But it was all worth it:
the bitchy parents, the freezing cold outside, the incredibly hot, humid
climate inside, the beer spill, getting kicked really hard in the knee by
some fucker. I loved every minute of it.

Sorry for rambling,
Amber

If I'm not mistaken, part of the lyrics for one of the CC songs that appear
on "The Last Temptation" got changed from the original version on "Stolen
Prayer". The Cooper versions sound overprodcuced to me-but you can't

Hey Euro-sommsters! Don't expect to see Blow Up The Outside World jockeying

This, from today's Melody Maker...

"Soundgarden have had the video to their Blow Up The Outside World single
banned by MTV. The video, directed by Gerry Casale who used to play in Devo,
features scenes of intravenous drug use and, horror of horrors, people
making love.

A spokesman for the band said they would not be cutting the scenes that MTV
objected to: 'We support the video cos it's as valid now as A Clockwork
Orange was then. People who want to ban it are taking certain images out of
context. It's like wanting the wedding scene from The Godfather, but not the
violence.' "

...For what it's worth, when I rang Headbanger's Ball this morning they were
as stunned and sorrowful as I was. They told me that they really fought to
stop the ban and they *will* be playing it on the Ball in the next couple of
weeks.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it seems to me Soundgarden videos
get unfairly singled out by MTV every time :-(

dotu really stand out as one of the best releases of the year? my liking

I have to say that Aenima is way better then DOTU and infact way better
then most albums. Dotu is still pretty good. I didn't buy that many albums
this year, Dotu is better then Load, and it's too early to say whether
it's better then Roots (i just got Roots by Sepultura), which is an
excellent album. Even if DOTU isn't the best of the year it still was good
enough to satisfy my Soundgarden cravings until the next concert/album.
IE I would be happy if Soundgarden released an album this good every 1.5/2
years. Lets hope they do that for another 10 years at least.

this straight from one of the horses' mouths:

Cameron: "Well, I just like making music with this band. It's
still full of surprises. I think this record is a good example of that. So
I just see us doing more records, and probably a little less touring,
because that's the thing that can chew up a band more than anything. We're
a really good studio band, so I hope we can taper off the touring end of
it in the next couple of years, and maybe try to do a couple more records,
and see how much more we have in us. Right now, though, the well is
definitely full. Everyone has more tunes, and I'm anxious to get us back
in the studio fairly soon." (drum! septemberish 1996)

cool note for the day - if you listen to tighter & tighter a
little more closely next time, in the left channel you will hear chris
(I'm fairly sure it is chris, 'cause kim is definitely in the right
channel) make a small mistake on his guitar. it comes at 1:57, just as
chris is singing "from a..."; a pretty tiny glitch where he seems to miss
the strum by a fraction, and the timing is out by a only barely-noticable
margin. but he shrugs it off, making up for it rather nicely at 2:12 with
a way cool squelch right after the line "...before I'm dead". good to see
that they are confident enough to leave this sort of stuff on there,
methinks, and not go back and edit or redo takes.

I find it odd that Kim would smoke a cigarette that Chris had in his
mouth because Chris has been sick. Especially after he made at least three
of our Chicago sommsters sick!!! I know lots of people that will not eat,
smoke and/or drink after anyone during "our" flu season!!!! toni

i agree with jeremy on this one...tho that could be attributed to my current
obsession with tool...but honestly i feel that aenima is the best album of
the year...its hard, raw, intense, angry, sexual, erotic, and
mesmerizing...i cant get it out of my head...however, im not sure it is fair
to compare it to DOTU because SG and Tool are not at the same point in their
careers...if we are to complare the two bands i think we should compare
aenima to bmf...in which case, id be hard pressed to chose the better of the
two albums because bmf has the same effect on me...

<<so sommsters, is dotu the best album of 1996? are there many
albums that rank above it, or does it rate better than most?>>

best album of 1996...aenima...DOTU doesnt come close...in fact Mazzy Star's
latest had gotten more play from me than DOTU...
