I was just talking with someone the other day about the booing of opening
acts. In San Diego, they really dont do that. First, for reasons I cant
explain, the crowd for PJ on the first of their two nites last year... well,
the Ramones opened and I swear, like ONE person in the crowd clapped. It was
a large Sports Arena, over 13,000 seats and they just werent welcomed too
much. But they werent booed.

When SG were last here, in 94, the crowd was really Not into ,<You Am I>,
but again they still didnt boo them. Booing a band, even when they do
disappoint, I mean thatd be like walking into a museum and spitting on a
painting. If folks dont like it, leave. And, yes Eliza, I think that SG
really dont like it when their openers arent well-received, cuz last time
Chris thanked the crowd for being so nice (his words) to the Reverend Heat.

this is my understanding of the 'songs for ozzy'...chris cornell wrote them
for ozzy...then alice cooper ended up recording them on one of his
albums...ive not heard his version, but i hear that it isnt as good as
chris'...as for repeating the same line, dunno...im not too observant

Subject: Re: 'Songs for Ozzy' EP

Actually, Alice Cooper recorded two of the songs for Ozzy: Stolen Prayer &
Unholy War and subsequently fucked both of them up. Alice doesn't have the
soul it takes to convey the intensity of a Chris Cornell or SG song. The only
redeeming value about the recording is that Chris sings back-up vocals on
Stolen Prayer.

Anyway, the lyric you are talking about, "Hit me with a hand of broken nails"
is from the opening of Heartfist and is the same as in Rusty Cage, however in
an entirely different context:

Love me to death
cause I need the sleep
I've been wide awake.
She hit me with
a hand of broken nails.
Well it hurts to give
when my heart has had
too much too take.
Another blow
Another broken Spell.
And it hits so hard.......

Anyway, I gave the lyrics to this song in its entirety to Seth a couple of
days ago and he said it should be up in a few days (probably after
Thanksgiving & finals).
But ignore the Alice Cooper recordings & search for the Stolen Prayer CD it's
well worth it. Every song is killer SG/Cornell material.

Plus, I've included almost every song from 'Stolen Prayer' on my B-side
compilation if you want a copy of it.

Hey guys--

Don't think anyone else posted this yet...washington post ffrtdiay, novemenr

SOUNDGARDEN'S MEAN STREAK

Soundgarden's show wednesday at the patriot center was an hour and a half of
high-octane hate--what the set lacked in texture, it made up in aggression
and louder-than-life volume.

Most prominent in all the noise was singer and guitarist Chris Cornell's
desperate howl of a voice. although the band had canceled its last 2 shows
on account of that voice giving out, he showed no signs of weakness before
the 2/3's full house, even in such stark settings as his solo version of
"black hole sun." Cornell, usually a quasi-operatic presence, also showed
some intriguing versatility and subtlety in his menacing, slurred vocals on
the band's eerie, trancelike cover of "helter skelter."

The other members of the band had no trouble keeping up, despite being
distracted by the junk thrown at them by a few clue-deficient audience
members. "If you see somebody throwing (expletive), (expletive), punch 'em
in the face," cornell suggested, but the seattle quartet put that anger to
good use on such thoroughly harsh on onslaughts as "my wave" "outshined" and
"dusty"--plus slightly more nuanced, mid-tempo numbers like "burden in my
hand," in which Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil teamed up to produce a
layered, gritty sound.

Tenderloin and Rocket form the Crypt opened for soundgarden but neither fared
as well as the headline act. Rocket, in particular, crashed and burned:
While this 7-piece unit's brand of glam-rock was catchy enough, the singer's
Jim Carreyesque excess of attitude ("who came to rock and roll here?") only
annoyed the crowd--which, after the set, cheered the roadies when they yanked
Rocket's banner from the stage.--Rob Pegoraro, washington post, 11/22/96.

Surfin the net, and I found this tidbit at allstar
(http://www.allstarmag.com/):

Soundgarden To Open Local 121 Club In Seattle =

When you're diversifying your investment portfolio and gobbling up real
estate in gentrified urban areas between albums, chances are your rock an=
d
roll ship has come in. That's the case with Soundgarden drummer Matt
Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd, who are putting the finishing touches o=
n
their new Seattle-area club, Local 121 (named after the last three digits=

of downtown Seattle's zip code, 98121). =

=A0=A0 The club, located on 1st Avenue in the center of Seattle's
suddenly-trendy Belltown neighborhood, features classically modern
architecture, sleek lines, and a performance stage. Early plans call for =
a
full bar and full cigar service. =

=A0=A0 According to Cory Wynn, the club's booking agent, Local 121 will
concentrate on bringing "a number of different acts" to the space, which =
is
scheduled to open in early November. Wynn, who booked the OK Hotel (the
club featured in the film Singles) has a fondness for modern and avant
garde jazz, and looks to bring that image to the club. =

=A0=A0 Local 121 joins Garage, an 18-table pool hall, bar, and restaurant=

opened by the members of Pearl Jam and their management in Seattle's
Capitol Hill neighborhood and The Crocodile Cafe, a Seattle club partiall=
y
owned by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, as celebrity-owned ventures on Seattle's
crowded club scene. =

Soundgarden Blows In Windy City Set
Attitude And Bluster Sink Aragon Ballroom Show

Soundgarden can't help it. No matter how much they rail against it, no
matter their punk roots, their very existence-- sludgy, bludgeoning, and
loud--suggests a '70's metal band, clich=E9s, bloat, and all, waiting to
happen. Their show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom Saturday night (Nov. 9) w=
as
full of big, blustery arena rock gestures, some of which were their fault=

(smashing guitars, throwing microphone stands), some of which weren't (li=
ke
the cigarette lighters lit, en masse, during "Black Hole Sun"). =

=A0=A0 A lack of subtlety, though, was the least of their problems.
Soundgarden, despite a recorded body of work that ranks them among the be=
st
acts of the past 15 years, have a spotty reputation live. Truly
transcendent shows are few and far between; most nights the band performs=

by rote, acting as if they were, by their mere presence, doing the audien=
ce
a favor.
=A0=A0 Saturday night got off to an ominous start when the mostly high-sc=
hool
aged crowd booed opening act Rocket From The Crypt (who turned in a fine
set, although the Aragon's typically wretched sound didn't help them any)=
=2E
"They fucking kick my ass, and I didn't even have to pay [to see them]," =
a
clearly peeved Chris Cornell said pointedly. Bassist Ben Shepherd then ga=
ve
the audience the finger, and it was all downhill from there. =

=A0=A0 Despite a few moments of near- perfection-- a stripped- down "Blac=
k Hole
Sun," performed by Cornell, solo, that fed into a frenetic,
microphone-smashing "Outshined," as well as glorious versions of "Rusty
Cage" and "Pretty Noose"--the band's consistent refusal to connect with
their audience on any level keeps them from being truly great, and always=

will. =

=A0=A0 Disturbing trend alert: "Burden in my Hand" was accompanied by a v=
ideo
montage with images like the word "enemy" superimposed over a picture of
Bill Clinton. The sheer awkward purposelessness of the video suggests tha=
t
Soundgarden might be better off leaving the demagoguery to the similarly
humor- impaired Rage Against the Machine. =
