I agree with Ben. When I last saw SG (in '94), Kim smashed up his guitar
and one of his speaker cabinets at the end of "Let Me Drown," and that
was only the second or third song into their set. I remember being sort
of surprised that they started to ruin their instruments so early in the
show. I mean, most people who smash guitars wait until the end of the
show, right? But I guess when you're that rich you can smash whatever you
want whenever you want. But I don't think it was out of jealousy. I don't
even think it was for want of attention. I'll go out on a limb and
suggest it was just a reaction to the energy of the show, much like
moshing (not to bring that up again). That's what I think, at least.

I only caught the end of the trailer as I walked into the room, but my TV
guide calls it 'an intimate concert with the Seattle rock band' and it's on
for one hour (including commercials, no doubt!) I have a feeling it is the
MTV special that Details referred to so my bet is it's a studio thing and
they recorded it in September when they were here.

I will post a report after I have seen it. I will be taping it (for me) of

I can't do any copies. Sorry. But we get US stuff on Euro MTV so I am sure
they will show it in the States sometime soon.

***The Show***
We were speared Tenderloin for this show...instead we got Pond...who, tho
not as visually offensive, still were not anything to get excited about...at
best i would say they are a good house band...the drummer stood out the
most, he had talent...

Rocket from the Crypt...i missed them in Chicago...but not this time around
and i am so glad i got to see them...what an incredible group of
preformers...i loved all their glitter and shine...they reminded me of Sha
Na Na meets The Ramones...50's muscle with 70's punk...they were fun...the
lead singer was hilarious..."I dedicate the next song to *me* cause Im so
fucking cool"...and "I made A's in *awesome*..." the guy was a trip...and
he suceeded in bringing to life a crowd that i was seriously having my
doubts about....a band i definitely will be seeing again...

I am just going to hit the high points, because basically, it has all
already been said...

Chris' voice is most definitely not back to normal, but he still sounded
great...tho he seemed some what subdued, in that there wasnt too much stage
banter...i suspect because he was conserving his voice...

as per the previous shows, the mix included BMF, SU and DOTU...but *surprise
surprise* they did Hands All Over...woohoo!!!! the first few songs Chris'
voice seemed strained...he got progressively better as the night wore on,
however, he did flake out on the first verse of Slaves and Bulldozers ("Now
i know why"...*R*...) and went low instead of high...in the middle of Fell
on Black Days, they stopped playing long enough for Chris to kick off the
stage a pair of underwear that had been thrown up, "Change your fucking
underwear at home" says Chris...Ben provided another moment of amusement,
well two actually...the first being a crowd surfer came over the rail to
security and as she walked off she had her arms and hands up in the air and
was wigglin and shaking them like mad...as she went by Ben, he stops playing
and mocks her, wigglin and shakin himself...the second was during the encore
(Dusty) he just plops his ass down on a speaker to play the song, kicked by
like he was in his garage...it was cute...Rusty Cage (missed ya *Lies*...)
was briefly dedicated to the Man in Black, tho not a formal dedication like
the one in Chicago...all in all they looked like they were having a good
time, no angry bashing or violent destruction...very little of the end of
show feedback stuff that Chris and Kim do...Chris did none and Kim's was
short...

The crowd was a soundgarden crowd...in that, they knew the songs...even the
older stuff...they were really into the music...the pit looked good...a few
swirling rings that looked rough but for the most part, moshing that was
collective energy, not who can i hurt the most...

As for them playing in a sports arena...that was the only low part of the
show...i do not like arenas...the sound was muddled...

hey all-

just read an o.k. article on SG in the new Hypno magazine...i will type it
up for seth, but thought i would put one snippet here that i found
funny...enjoy!

"When we were doing ToTD," recalls Cornell, "Stone used to get all my lyrics
wrong. He'd go straight for the rock lyrics. On 'Say Hello to Heaven',
there's a line that said 'Lighter than a breath from a dove,' and he thought
I was singing 'My heart is beating like a big bass drum.' Then in 'Wooden
Jesus,' where I sing '20 percent of my future is sin,' he thought I was
singing '21st Century Woman'; straight for the wrong thing!"

and one more quickie:

(talking about Lollapalooza)...Cornell laughingly refers to it as
"Metal-sexist-apalooza." He remarks, "I'll dress like a woman if it will
make people feel better."

From: UnknownFan@aol.com
Subject: SG Atlanta: Round 2! (long review)

hey guys--

just got back from atlanta. 30 hours of madness. the second sg show in 3
days--psyche! i wish i could quit my job and travel with them around the
world!

first stop in atlanta was wax and facts where they have a lot of sg vinyl--i
bought the flower 12". their address is 432 moreland ave, ne (in little five
points) and the # is 404-525-2275.

i tried to make it the somms meeting place on time, but missed dee dee, her
hubby thomas, jeremy and jay. luckily, fellow sommster karen (KJack) and i
had seats right in front of one another. i met her and her roomie sandy
(they drove 6 1/2 hours each way to see this show--i was impressed!) and they
were totally sweet. i spotted mariana and her friend down from south
carolina. they were on the floor, but came to visit us before the show.
also totally cool--wish we could have hung longer...

but the lights dimmed at 9:15 and it was show time! the set was very similar
to wednesday night's show in dc. opened with spoonman, leading into swmgec.
the place rocked! chris was less talkative than he had been on wed, but his
voice was def. better.

thinking back, chris was in bit of a pissy mood on wed--what with his rolling
stone rant and that bitch tirade. it is possible that he was mad that rocket
had been booed off the stage. the atlanta audience was more receptive to
rocket and when chris came out, he mentioned it, " so the guys from rocket
tell me you are a good crowd." remember this guys--it makes sg happy if the
audience is nice to their openers!

our seats were excellent--right next to the stage, on ben's side. we could
see chris, ben and kim very well, but unfortunately couldn't see matt at all.
(at least i got to watch him on wed--in dc, i had a birds-eye view of the
kit.) they all seemed to be having a good time.

kim was def more playful than he had been in dc (though as greg reported, he
did that guitar-behind-the-head trick in dc; in atlanta he played around with
his guitar, gave us the obligatory feedback at the end, popped a beer after
the set, and was also smoking on stage at one point--i don't why stupid stuff
like that seems so cool, but it did.

and chris was feeling better i think. at least he looked healthy to me! one
thing he did a lot in dc which i forgot to mention was that he often rubbed
his guitar up against his mike stand at the end of songs. he did this once
in atlanta (and broke a string), but in dc he did it a lot. to those of you
who subscribe to the guitars-as-substitute (-) theory, this was very sexual.
oh! and in atlanta, he came on stage swinging his arm around like pete
townsend!

some of you have asked for visual details, so here are a few. chris was
wearing a black long-sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow and
black pants (jeans?). kim was back to wearing his tool tee and black jeans.
ben was wearing black pants (do we see a theme emerging here?) and a grey
tee-shirt. yes ladies, he does have a nice bod. matt, as i said, was hidden
from view, but i did catch him as he left the stage and he was wearing a red
"muscle" tee. you know, no sleeves. he's a cutie (and an excellent master
of rhythm as i said the other day.)

the set list (not in order):

rusty cage (dedicated to the "man in black")
outshined (stupendous, highlight)
slaves and bulldozers (great, but not like wed when it was a show highlight)
jcp (the last song of the night)
swmgec (the 2nd song)
let me drown
my wave (very intense--highlight for me)
black days (beautiful)
bhs (acoustic, as you know)
spoonman (the opener, yum)
pretty noose
dusty (encore #1)
ty cobb (very fun fuck you sing-a-long)
butow (after the break, introduced by a variant on the mtv video for those of
you who haven't seen it)
burden (with vid outtakes in the background)
no attention (which i like a lot more than i expected--they didn't do this
one on wed.)
helter skelter leading into
boot camp
and yes, they *did* play hands all over. it was way cool that they attempted
it, but i thought this was the one time all night when chris' voice showed
strain. :-(

that is the way i remember the set--an hour and 45 minutes of craziness. feel
free to correct me if i am wrong. also i don't remember drawing flies from
dc, but i may have spaced. and in dc we had kickstand (which was great) and
never the machine (but as i said above, not no attention or hands.)

i am glad i flew down. it was cool to meet mariana and karen, though i was
sorry to have not met the others (who also came from far away--north
carolina.) by the way, thanks for calling yesterday afternoon jeremy, and dee
dee, i tried to call your hotel this am at 10, but you all were already gone.
 oh well, we tried!

that's it for now. have fun you all--and the girl that sold her nashville
tix--she will regret it! soundgarden rock the world. thanks to my brother
rich for procuring the tix. :-)

Yup, you just brought back a memory from Chicago which I dont remember
anyone posting....on the first night, Chris dedicated a song to RFTC (cant
remember for the life of me which one) and the crowd boooed (although i was
cheering cuz i have always found RFTC amusing and always high-energy)....As
the crowd booed, Chris looked pissed but Ben really went kind of
nuts....(this is when DeeDee and I were in the crowd, so I could see it
well). He flipped off the crowd a dozen times, pacing on the stage,
screaming Fuck You Fuck You Fuck You, etc... Chris tried to continue his
dedication by saying that RFTC were great troopers to travel all over with
them, etc. but the crowd continued to boo and Ben continued to flame the
world.

I have noticed at concerts in the last bunch of years that it seems to be
considered "cool" to boo most opening acts, kind of as a way of saying there
is really only ONE band you wanna see and the rest can just go home....Well,
i noticed both nights in Chicago that SG does NOT like this...they
definitely have a lot of respect for their opening acts and seem to want the
fans to be supportive of them....I guess what bothers me is that 90% of the
people who were booing, probably didnt even see the RFTC show...they were
just booing for booing's sake...

now wondering about the development of the word "boo" as a sign of
disapproval as opposed to something ghosts say....

The group was great!, but the people wasn't that much. I'm sorry to say

Guild re-released the '74 Guild S-100 some years back. Prices are extremely
steep for a copy guitar though (which we can think Kim's popularity for)
ranging from $600 - $800 American from what I've seen. Supposedly Guild had
several calls about the S-100 after Kim did an article in some guitar

price tag on it). It almost seems like you can get a real Gibson SG for
slightly more...

OK.. I've seen it again. Two people have claimed that 'Black Hole Sun' was
done 'acoustically' at the Atlanta show. Did he really come out with an
acoustic guitar? I saw them at Lolla & heard two recent boots & Chris played
an electric (a Les Paul maybe, I forget)... Are you people just confusing
terms around & meaning 'solo' instead?
