I did read an interview with Chris in Rolling Stone a couple of years
ago. I believe David Letterman was on the cover. The interview was a solo
interview, though. I'm not sure about any others for sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if Soundgarden did cut down on touring. They have
never been fond of it. And Chris seems so susceptible to voice problems
these days, he may prefer to conserve it for recording. It would bum me out
if I never got to see them again, but if it's a choice between more great
records or more live shows, I would go for the former.

As to only having another two or three albums left in them, who knows. God,
I hope not! He did say *may* didn't he?

But Kim has already said that being in a band isn't the be all and end all
and that one day he may go back to college and take a physics degree.

Matt has played with a lot of different musicians - and types of music -
Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Tone Dogs, Violet Ray etc and has said when he
is older he imagines himself in a jazz band.

Of course, Chris could quite easily have a successful solo career if he
wanted (even though I can't imagine anything could be as great as
Soundgarden.) The man lives for music. Hey, maybe that's why he was trying
on designer leather stage gear (as reported in Details)- maybe that joke he
once made about starting a Vegas career *wasn't* a joke!!!!!

Ben will probably end up in jail! :-)

Soundgarden mean the world to me and I would be devastated if they split any
time in the near future. But every good thing must come to an end
eventually. Maybe Matt is letting us down gently by giving us plenty of warning.

Just a thought.

Subject: DC show

Well again, Soundgarden rocked the Patriot Center last night. I missed
Tenderloin and Rocket wasn't bad but I have seen them before and they were
much better a few years ago.

Chris Cornell was awesome! You could tell his voice was bothering him, but
he still sang great. He sang lower than usual and didn't hit all the high
notes in some songs, but he still did his great scream and no matter what the
man does he rocks! And for Shroom, yes he was absolutely the hottest thing I
have ever seen in my entire life. I couldn't take me eyes off of him. I was
on the floor in the center and had a pretty good view but anyone else who was
there last night.... did Ben do anything out of control? If he did I didn't
see it, basically he just played pretty normal and calm.

I was very surprised that the show didn't sell out and the crowd there wasn't
exactly what I expected. Also I didn't really love any of the shirts there,
so I didn't get one. I will probably kick myself later but.... Set list was
the same as Chicago I think.... they played Drawing Flies, woo hoo!! Also
their version of Helter Skelter rocks!! I wish they played older stuff too,
but I don't think we will ever see that.

What else can I say, it was a great show and I am glad I went. I even took
my friend who had never listened to SG before he met me and he loved it. He
was surprised at how pissed off Chris was, well I don't think Chris was
really pissed off, just that my friend pictured him to be this recluse and
was surprised when Chris was going off about Rolling Stone etc... I know it
was mentioned weeks ago, but I think I missed it - why is Chris so pissed off
about Rolling Stone? Granted their magazine has been pretty lame, but did
something happen?

I feel complete for now. Sorry I missed all the sommsters but I didn't even
get into the show until around 8:30-9:00, we were tailgating in the parking
lot, fun fun fun.

Later all,

Karen

It is to bad Caryn left the list, but maybe she did it b/c she realized she
overstepped the bounds of good taste or something. I don't muiss her nasty
replies to simple things, or to the questions from newbies. I don't miss
the negative quality and I know a few people have told me they no longer
feel they're walking on eggshells when they post! Personally, her last few
posts implying no one else could possibly know as much as she does were
unwarranted and her attacks on KAthie, whom I feel handled the whole Chicago
show thing well, were vicious and it showed no signs of letting up or of
being resolved. Begging her to come back may just feed that ego of "I know
so much more" and once again we'd be open for attacks b/c we dared voice a
different opinion than she shared. That's all just mho, so maybe we as a
list need to discuss JUST A BIT--let's not make an issue of it--if Caryn's
biting comments added to what's supposed to be a feel-good, open forum of
exchange.

BTW, yes, I'm back from an exhaustive and exhausting 2 1/2 day eval of
another school...and in the process I learned how to use a laptop and
ClarisWorks! Just call me a techie.....later....deb

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the list. I will be seeing Soundgarden in LA on Dec 2nd thanks
to Chris (aka SGardnGrl). It's my first time. I feel like a little kid
again. I haven't been this excited about a concert ever. Never in my
wildest dreams - 7th row, center stage! This is a dream come true. I
promise to share the experience with all of you.

Has anyone seen the latest Might magazine (#13) - each month there is a
column called Gaywatch '96. "All about famous people who are gay but don't
know it yet." Well they had Chris Cornell on the list! I quote, "It's hard
to know if you're gay or not when you live in Seattle. It's so gray all the
time, and it seems like everybody drinks mocha. But Chris has the band,
he's rich, he'll be fine. Chris Cornell = GAY!" There's a tiny photo of
Chris looking as good as ever. I thought you'd be interested since there
has been talk about liking the band if he was. Personally the music is all
that matters to me.

I'm still waiting to see the latest video. I've been searching "120
Minutes" but not luck yet. At least I've got my copy of Details magazine to
soothe me for the time being. The man has the most incredible eyes.

I loved hearing about the Chicago experiences - I felt as it I was there
with you.

I am glad to have found this list - most of my friends don't understand my
love for Soundgarden. I hate trying to explain myself all the time. It's
nice to find others like me. I hope I get to meet some of you at the LA
concert.

Bye for now,

Hey everyone!!!! I personally think that we ALL need to put in our
favorite SG songs and rock out!!!! Let's think happy thoughts!!! I
luv those!! Ok--I'm delirious--SG will be in their hometown in,
let's count them, 19 days!! They already have 900 people on their
guest list--it's going to be a wild time!! I'm so HAPPY to hear that
they have resumed their tour and Chris is doing ok. (Our prayers
were answered--there is a GOD!)
As far as the current thread goes--I have to agree with what everyone
else has said so far , if Chris, or any member of SG were gay--then so
be it. Though, I find them all sexy as hell (BEN being my personal
fav), I love them for their music, not their penises. If I could
spend one day, hour, whatever with the band or any member of the band
I would want nothing more than conversation. I find them all to be
so witty, intelligent, humorous, etc.....a conversation with them
would be better than.......just about anything I think of.
I can't remember who wrote the post about Matt (sorry) but I agree.
Matt is phenomenal--no if's, and 's or but's about it. Listening to
him, sends chills (I AM COMPETELY SERIOUS HERE) down my spine and
gives me goosebumps. I am just in complete awe of his incredible
talent. Here's a great idea--they should install a camera behind and
above Matt at concerts and play it on a screen so we can watch all
his superb moves.....I know it's kind of a cooky idea...but
still...it's probably the only way many of us would ever be able to
really check Matt out.
Well, I've done enough rambling for the day--and I just want to add
that all of you SOMMSTERS are *awesome*!!! (I hate that word, but
sometimes it fits so perfectly) I luv you all!!! I hope none of you
ever change! As Mr. Cornell so finely put it...we are the true fans,
the ones who know how to truly appreciate their mind blowing talent.
I have faith that SG will be with us for a long, long time!! JEN

Subject: DC Show - GOD I LOVE THIS BAND!!!!
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Okay here we go.....

First: Why does Chris hate Rolling Stone. Man he really gave us the finer
points on what we should do with it. Does anyone have any ideas why our
man is pissed at them???

Second: Never, never, never throw a golf ball at the band. I though for a
few seconds they were going to leave the stage.. I'm not 100% sure but the
object in question either hit or nearly hit our Sweet Matt. I do know that
the song they did next the drummer for Tenderloin played. Which was funny
because he kept getting faster and faster as the song progressed. I think
he got ahead of the rest of the band a few times. But back to the golf
ball. This was the only time Ben said anything to the crowd. And Chris
ask if we had come to see a band - "yes".. Do we come to throw things -
"no". Tell you the whole band was just slightly pissed at this.. So
people be cool and if you are at a show and the dork beside you goes to
throw something.. Do what Mr. Cornell suggest - smash him in the face..
Whoa violent aren't we... It's okay Toni SOMMs Mom has cool down just a
little....

Third: Ben!!! Ben never moved.. He didn't spit.... He didn't flip the
bird... He stood and played.. NOT OUR BEN!! Please Ben what ever was
wrong come back to us.. I missed his antics. It took something from the
energy of the show..

Sound: The sound at this show was very good. You could really hear all
the parts and each and every word that Chris gave you. As I said his voice
was in good shape.. He kept it low and didn't hit allot of high ones. He
could hold them. I also figured they did a bit more instrumental then
usual - this I take to give Chris a few seconds of down time. They did do
Kickstand which I don't remember them doing in Chicago..

View: Great seats could see the guys so well. Even Matt. The view was
much better than Chicago...

Performances: Over all the energy level wasn't there as it was Sunday
night in Chicago. There seem to be a bit of a hold back. The crowd at the
Center was young and I don't think they saw it. When I say young I mean
young.... We saw 9 and 10 year olds.. I would never take a child this
young to rock concert - just for the reason of their hearing. And you know
a 9 year is not going to know or understand all the doing at a concert of
this type. But I did see allot of people who were BHS people they would
come alive for Superunknown songs.. Trendy - ::shutter::

SOMMsters: The SOMMs members I met that night was as all the members I
have met so far. Great.. We had a nice time at Fuddruckers.. I'm sorry I
had my silly camera with me and forgot to take pictures.. For the members
we miss I'm so sorry.. Maybe we can get together some weekend... I would
still love to meet you all... How about a SOMMs pizza party at SOMMs Mom
places... :-)

It is the view of some rock fans that some bands go with the trends of
whatever musical style is in vogue. Take Metallica, for instance. They
sound different now than their previous albums, but they said that it had
nothing to do with the new wave of "alternative" bands. The members of
Metallica also have shorter hair, which was their prerogative to do anyway.
Yes, its a coincidence that the hair-cutting started when heavy metal
started to "die". Remember when Cornell finally cut his hair? Another
band who seemed to have changed was Led Zeppelin. Did you ever hear the
last album? It sounded totally different from their first and second
albums.

Soundgarden's albums each have a different vibe, but I feel that some of
their songs don't seem dated(yet.) They have a unique sound and hardly
sound like any of the modern "alternative" or hard rock bands. For this
reason, I think that Soundgarden will stay around a long time, as long as
the band doesn't break up. It seems that a lot of copycat bands don't even
get past their first album because they're making the same kinds of riffs
or wearing that "new wave" rock star style.

I recenty picked up one of my old copies of Rolling Stone with Soundgarden
on the cover, which is a great shot. To those interested, look up the
issue for June 1994. Sorry, I don't have the RS number or the exact date
in June(the magazine comes bimonthly), but I hope it's easy to find. What
I especially took interest in were pictures of Chris and Kim without facial
hair. Kim looks totally different without facial hair. There is also a
picture of the original Soundgarden, with Hiro.

For us SOMMS girls, the beginning of the article starts off with 2 B&W
pictures of Chris, and the second picture has Chris's face on it, which
takes up the whole page. I've seen this pic in numerous places, and I
think some of you may have also seen it already, but the picture is big
enough to put on a wall.

I've still got a pair of GA tix to the "LAST" show of SG's American 1996 Tour
in Seattle. I would really like to sell them (for face value of course) to a
fellow SOMMster than trying to dump them on the street in Seattle the day of

In the story we ran on Tuesday about the gathering of the online Soundgarden

that the event was organized by MIT's Seth Perlman, the webmaster of the
unofficial Soundgarden site. In fact it was the work of a Soundgarden fan,

Subject: Does Chris believe in God?

Hey here's some random (rambling???) thoughts:

Religion and religous metaphors play a big part in a number of SG songs (as
well as Chris & Matt's TOTD stuff) partiularly on BMF. Like Holy Water, Jesus
Christ Pose, Outshined (the power child??), Rusty Cage (God's headlights),
Searching with my good eye closed (tie the linen on), Fresh Tendrils, Blind
Dogs, Wooden Jesus, Your Savior (Yes I know the last couple are TOTD) just
to name a few.

And almost always, the references are angry or at the very least negative.

Now I know Chris says his lyrics are just lyrics (which I personally think is
a way of dodging having to explain the meaning of everything he writes to
every bonehead who interviews him but that's a well worn thread and I won't
go there), but does he use the references to express his belief or disbelief
in God or is it simply for a metaphor for incredible song writing?

Just a thought.

Subject: Chris interview

Hi guys~

The radio station, WDRE-103.9 here in Philly just aired an interview with
Chris. They had Marilyn Russell interview him and apparently, she got the
only interview with Chris for anyone in the Philly area. So, here it is in
it's entirety, which wasnt very much. But, its still a pretty good
interview. Pay attention, Philly Sommsters, Chris compliments our town!!
Here ya go, guys:

****************************************************************************
***************************
Q: When you guys did Lollapallooza, did you come and hang out in
Philadelphia for a little while?

CC: Yeah, we did. We were here for a couple of days

Q: Do you like Philadelphia?

CC: Yeah, we had a really good time there. Its a good place for us to
play. Most of the time when we played here we didnt really think of
Philadelphia as a town cause we just come in and like we'd get here at 6 in
the morning and wake up and play a show and then we're gone. So, that was
the only time we came here for no real reason 'cause we had a couple days
off and this was the only real city anywhere near that we felt like we
wanted to be. So, we came here and hung out for a couple of days and it was
great.

Q: It wasnt the vibe of the cheese steaks or anything in particular like that?

CC: I dont eat that kind of food, so that had nothing to do with it. We
had a really good time with that penetentiary, though. We went in there and
wandered around for a while, it was wild.

Q: Were you always sort of the loner when you were younger or is it sort if
that rock star thing?

CC:Umm....its neither. I think I developed that when I was a teenager. I
wasnt always like that when I was a little kid, its kind of hard to be a
loner when you have a big family. Somewhere in my teen years I started to
be that way, it had nothing to do with rock stardom. In a way, I think it
would be easier to go out and be social because you figure if you go to the
right places everyone's already going to like you. But, just kinda makes it
a good excuse to be reclusive.

Q: Does that lend new meaning to 'Blow Up The Outside World'? Do you feel
sometimes that you would like to get rid of everybody and be in a canoe
going down a river maybe with your wife?

CC: Sure <everyone laughs along with Chris> That sounds good.

Q: Do you like the studio environment, do you like producing?

CC:Umm..yeah. I think Im more comfortable there than anywhere else as far
as doing what we do. I think its the most natural, there's no schedule.
You kind of go in and have fun and record and make things up. Touring's not
really like that, you know, a show has to go on at a particular time or all
these people start charging you a lot more money and fans start to get
really pissed off. So, the rest of its kind of do whatever you want while
you're up there, but, you have to leave at a certain time and be somewhere
at a certain time. As much as it seems like its not a job, there are things
about it that are like having a job. Being in the studio, except for the
fact that it costs you money, being in the studio is pretty much the
ultimate freedom and I just kind of do whatever I want to do whenever I feel
like it.

****************************************************************************
***************************

That's it. May I add that before they aired the pre-taped
interview, Marilyn Russell described Chris to another dj as "a really nice
guy. Really quiet, didnt have much to say. Pretty much a loner, laid back,
kind of doin' his own thing". Chris seemed in good spirits, he laughed a
lot and was very nice to the interviewer.

                                                                        Wend

I could be off here, but Ben wouldn't smash his guitar for that reason. I
think you've mistakenly attributed that jealousy motive. I would hazard
that Ben _likes_ not having the spotlight on him and probably requests
that it doesn't rest on him. Look at interviews with the guy. In fact,
from RS June '94, he asks the interviewer to just leave his part out and
says, "That'd be cool."
My guess is that Ben smashed the bass because he gets really energetic on
stage and likes to destroy things. In fact, this distruction can be
viewed as a creation. That is, a way of creatively expressing himself. I
wouldn't say it's art because too many people try to limit what art
means, but Ben, in his own way, creates with his on-stage performance.
Easily the most fun band member to watch.
While Chris does do a lot of stage performance, his seems less natural to
me than Ben's. More like he's trying to hard. Ben appears to go with
whatever he feels. Kinda like that goofy dancer guy with Rocket From the Crypt.

No, Ben was definitely in stoic mode last night. I was down front, standing
right in front of him for the first half of the show. Right before Helter
Skelter, things got kind of quiet so I started yelling at him. I got his
attention and he stared straight at me, so I yelled for him to loosen up and
have some fun up there. He just scowled at me and stormed off across the
stage. I was thinking to myself, "Oh shit, now I'm in trouble." But
nothing ever happened. He just came back and kept on being Ben the Stoic.
Oh well.

Outside of no Ben antics, the show was amazing. I was most impressed by
Matt Cameron. I know it's been said before, but he just blows my mind.
He's so precise... No wasted motion at all. Once I get my head together
again (it's been a long week), I'll try to put the set list together. Heck,
maybe someone else remembers...

Definitely worth the price of admission.

UM, yeah, i definitely cannot see how the band could ever be nearly the

some bands can switch drummers and no one could tell (i.e. Smashing

finding someone who could play matt's stuff.
I'm no expert on drumming, nor do i know a lot about it, but i do know

I agree with Ben. When I last saw SG (in '94), Kim smashed up his guitar
and one of his speaker cabinets at the end of "Let Me Drown," and that
was only the second or third song into their set. I remember being sort
of surprised that they started to ruin their instruments so early in the
show. I mean, most people who smash guitars wait until the end of the
show, right? But I guess when you're that rich you can smash whatever you
want whenever you want. But I don't think it was out of jealousy. I don't
even think it was for want of attention. I'll go out on a limb and
suggest it was just a reaction to the energy of the show, much like
moshing (not to bring that up again). That's what I think, at least.

hey guys---

i am on the digest, so i haven't seen any of the other posts about last
night. i had a great time. arrived just as they took the stage with
spoonman. stood with my friend jacki at the bottom of the stairs, in front of
the rail (thank you mr. security guard!) on ben's side. could see pretty
well. unable to meet jamie etc before the show because i had to work late,
but did spot sean with his somms shirt on. he said he has been unable to
access the list for a month because his modem is down :-(

highlights for me: helter skelter--a really moody version. best i have heard.
slaves and bulldozers, kickstand. the mosh pit looked reasonable (no crowd
surfing during slow songs), but i didn't brave it because i recently injured
my knee. (it *will* be better on saturday though. :-) )

they played from 9:45 til at least 11:15 (maybe 11:30?) chris was definitely
avoiding the high notes, but seemed to pick up steam as he went. matt makes
me want to take up drumming. incredible. i realized last night that one of
the main reasons i love the band is their sense of rhythm. chris often
stomped the floor to the beat (like marching kind of). it was cool.

also, shroom, chris lifted his shirt once and exposed his tummy--looked
skinny to me, but you know what they say about lanky men....:-) also, he
ragged on rolling stone again...does anybody know exactly why? my friend tom
said it was because of the eddie vedder article? lastly, he dedicated pretty
noose to "the bitch." anyone specific?

anyway, it was rockin' and i can't wait til saturday in atlanta where i hope
to meet dee dee, mariana, jay, jeremy, karen, vanessa etc.

Ok, someone commented that they thought that BHS was about
using sex to escape from your problems. But what I get out of it is
really different...
I think that it has to do with the fact that, in the speaker's
eyes (not CHRIS', remember the whole persona in songwriting deal) the
world is not worth trying to rehabilitate, so he's asking for either
the end of the world (?) or some huge castastrophe to wipe it all
away (Noah's Arc much?). The lines "times are gone for honest men",
and "heaven send hell away" (hell being society, etc.) really convince
me that it has to do with the world being in horrible shape. And
the fact that he's asking for the BHS to "wash away the rain" (rain
commonly affiliated with misery, pain in literature, etc) gives
me an inkling towards the whole BHS being a catastrophe. Plus,
the video does give support towards the end of the world theory. Watch
closely and you can see people being sucked into the sky...nice touch. :)
