Seth...I've got to hand it to you...you did a superb job on those
concert pics. If you aren't a professional, then you SHOULD be! Kudos!

To GeekGirl...I e-mailed you about the SOMMS shirts, but I haven't
gotten a reply...if you are too busy, I understand, but please at least
let me know here if you are getting my messages. tanx.

Oh. . .btw. . .as soon as I can locate a scanner, I will be sending Seth
an image file for the cover of "The Garden Grows". The front is a
red-orange back drop with the band standing around in a semi-circle,
looking up. In the center of their "circle" you can see a yellow splash
in the floor as if something fell from the sky and splashed into the
floor. The inside includes some band member shots and a full band
enhanced-photo. There is also some interesting commentary on the band,
its history, and their albums (esp. SuperUnknown). Just thought that
you might be interested. . .so as soon as I get them scanned and sent
I'll let you know.

A spring tour for us Americans would be great! Maybe SG could play a
little closer to Pittsburgh, PA this time??? I wish I could fly out of
town to see them like some of you do, but college and my job don't allow
the time. . .here's to dreaming. . .

On the BIMH single (part 2), Chris says in his interview that SG covered
"One Minute of Silence". Does anyone know if or where this is
available? Curious George wants to know.

BTW. . .I am all FOR sending our beloved Chris a get-well card. How do
we do it? Could we just all send our well-wishing thoughts to the
digest on a particular day and then Seth could forward it to Silver?
I'm not sure. . .just a thought/suggestion.

BTW. . .again. . .someone mentioned something the other day that kind of
struck a chord with me. . .someone had mentioned SOMETHING about the
ambiguity of Chris's sexuality. Now, I know that he is married, but I
was wondering how many of you SOMMSTERS would still feel the same way
about him and/or the band if he suddenly announced that he were gay?

One reason that I'm asking is that I did a research project on
visibility and acceptance of homosexuality for psych, and when those
references were made (at least I THINK they were) the other day, that
kind of just wormed its way out of my head and into the keyboard.

You can e-mail me or post. . .(unless Seth would object. . .I hope that
this isn't TOO far off topic). . .please explain why you feel what you
do. Thanks to all who reply!

I am not a great contributor to this list. In fact, the only thing
I've done so far is reply to other's posts. I like reading about everyone's
experiences and knowlegde dealing with SG. HOWEVER, I do not want to read
about fights between members. That's personal. There is no need for me to
hear that the almighty Appleman has so much more knowledge than everyone
else, and I don't care to hear other's replies. Keep shit to yourself. If
you have a real problem, go find the problem and beat it's ass. Otherwise,

Ok this is pissing me off just a little bit. I usually stay quiet
about these things but I can't take any more of the G word. Michael
Apple, since you are in a "grunge band" (notice quotations meaning
I'm quoting you. That's what they're for!)I guess you hail from
Seattle and wear lots of flannel, since that is basically what "grunge"
is all about. We've talked about it on the list before. None of us
(except you apparently) consider Soundgarden a "grunge" band. The
"grunge" scene isn't about music, its about what those media schmucks
consider trendy for a season. I guess you got the habit from reading
your "320 periodicals".

1st) Sorry for the Apple controversy... :)

2nd) Ahh!! It is a reality that music styles seem to fluctuate decade
wise. However, we are talking about *popular* culture here. In pop
culture things go in and out like, well... (Shroom, help me out with a
metaphor here :)). Anyway, it seems that REAL art has a sense of *true
originality* that transcends popular trends. I consider SG as one of,
if not *the* most original musical artists of our generation along with
the "N" band... SG falls in the ranks of Zeppelin, the Beatles, and
even Johnny Cash all in respect to their time and genre's. It's the
concept of *true originality* that comes through in art that
distinguishes the Originators from the Followers. The fact is that SG's
widespread popularity may fade as the trends change, but only time will
tell if SG's music will stand up as transcendent art and not fall into
the ranks of a passing fad. I would contend for the former. I just
wonder what the next musical revolution will offer. I wonder if I will
hate what my kids listen to? Hmmm...

I just picked up the Details (yeah I know, kinda late) and on the
cover it says "First solo interview". Is that true? I could have
sworn Rolling Stone did a solo interview. It was in one of their Year
in Review or whatevers. I don't know what issue it was but its the only
magazine I have besides Spin and Details. Anyways, point being, this
Details interview couldn't be the "first solo interview".

In reply to clmiller's question pertaining to our attitudes toward
Chris's sexuality - I would feel the same about the band. The music
drew me in before I ever actually saw them. Once I saw them on video
I was fascinated with their attitude as much as their looks. (Don't
get me wrong. I think Chris is the most attractive man I have ever
seen). Ultimately it is the music and I would say mostly the lyrics
which make the difference. However, I can't help but wonder if the
lyrics, music and entire dynamic of the band wouldn't be completely
different if Chris, or any of them, were gay... just thoughts.

Who gives a shit about Caryn? The only thing that happened when she
was on the list the same time as me, was that she misinterpreted a post <i
sent to the list, made an ass out of herself, stayed quiet for a while then

Is there something wrong with me talking about my GRUNGE ROCK BAND (
notice that there are no quotes, you dipshit) and my Kim Thayil Biography?
There is no reality disallusionment. However, I do sense something off of
you. It's jealousy that I've been published dozens of times for fiction,
nonfiction, and poetry, have a released EP, and am now gaining the
historical distinction of writing a biography on Kim Thayil, the most
highly accomplished grunge guitarist in the history of the music.
I pity you and your little pinheaded barbarian comments.

>Apple. Believing that most people here give a rat's ass about having

Hey, if someone offered to put my name in a book on a musician I liked
(because of experiences meeting that person) I would be honored. If you
don't like it, fuck off, but you CANNOT speak for everyone else on the list
. Who do you think you are? The list spokesman? That's Seth!!!! :) J/K
As for my band, I CAN say how Soundgarden relates to us. Soundgarden
is one of the main influences to my GRUNGE ROCK BAND (notice no quotes). I
can understand why they'd react certain ways to things, because I am a
musician and often react the things the same way.
If you had read 350 periodical articles, 22 books, and assorted
journals on Soundgarden (including 46 interviews), you would be able to
make better analysises about their behavior too. Often, on the list, I
explain their feelings on their fans, I take it directly from the source:
the interviews themselves. So, don't pretend that I don't know what I'm
doing.

>>All responses to this message are being erased.

YOU are calling ME a baby?

Let me explain it to you this way. When I make a comment like that on
a mail list like this one, I will receive approximately 12 million emails
in response, usually from idiots like yourself, Taylor, all of which whine
and swear and make rude comments, instead of intelligently discussing the
comment I made.
I don't have the time or patience to deal with that crap, so I just
tell everyone that all responses to the particular message will be erased.
And don't tell me not to make the comment, because things like that
must be said sometimes. You have to inform people of things sometimes, and
others may respond to your message in a hostile manner.
Normally, I avoid swearing in posts to the list, but in this case I've
made an exception because you are an asshole. If you had sent your
original response to me PERSONALLY instead of making a scene, then this
wouldn't have happened. But, now I've had to go publicly to answer your
charges. Thanks a lot, you dickface.

All responses to this are getting erased too, because I really don't
care about anyone's reactions to this. (Go talk to Taylor about it.)

Accoridng to an interview I heard with Chris, he said "It just seemed

it had something to do with the new album . . . Also, SG was told that

didn't really eleaborate on whether or not that had much to do with the

First off, about the SG sexuality question... I don't think there's
anything in the world that could make me feel differently about Soundgarden's
music than I do right now. It's one of the most important things in the
world to me, and it's affected my life to such an extreme... I'm eternally
indebted to SG for sharing their art with the world. Without their music, I
never would have met some of my grooviest friends... such as Dena (my SiCA),
Vikki (my hero), or Aaron (my favorite angel). If Chris suddenly decided he
was gay... first I'd feel REALLY bad for Susan, and probably send her flowers
or something. And secondly, I'd start a campaign to hook Chris up with Dave
Navarro. ;-) Hey, it's worth a shot right??

>On the BIMH single (part 2), Chris says in his interview that SG covered
>"One Minute of Silence". Does anyone know if or where this is
>available? Curious George wants to know.

Curious George should go pick up SG's first album (released on SST)...
Ultramega OK. =) "Beyond The Wheel" is one of their best songs...

Sorry to hear that you're sick, Eliza. It must be pretty bad to keep
you home from a SG show! Hope you feel better tomorrow. =)

On to the Apple controversy... Michael, you have got to be the most
unjustifiably arrogant kid I've ever had the displeasure of coming in contact
with. You wrote:

Exaggerate much, kiddo? 22 books? Care to put a name to them all?
Hmmm... so you're able to explain SG's feelings to their fans, because you
know the band through their interviews?? Why did I hear the theme music to
"Psycho" when I read that? Darn it, I'M supposed to be the list psycho...
but it seems that I'm being upstaged by Mr. Apple. (Ok, I guess I can live
with that. Just keep your eyes off my list hootchie title.) Well, I must
say... I can't wait to read this book of yours, Mikey. It's sure to prove...
amusing. And I'm certain that Kim's just going to be THRILLED with it. Make
sure that when you meet Kim you tell him he's "the most accomplished GRUNGE
guitarist in the history of music." And put his reaction in the book, too.
Hey, why don't you get pictures to accompany it? ;-)

Yes, conflicts of opinion make for great intelligent discussions.
However, Ms. Rose is much more inclined to ranting and personal
insults. I do NOT miss that, nor her CONSTANTLY twisting people's
words around so she could commence confrontations and further whatever
personal adgenda she has. She also appeared to think she was ruler or
mediator (instigator is more like it) of this list. I vote NO. She's
very knowledgable; no one says she is not. However, her volatility
and manic episodes contributed nothing to this list, but created many
hard feelings.

For your information, lots of people care about Caryn's membership on
the list.
The question is, who gives a flying-fuck about your membership on the
list?
You have offered practically nothing to this list. How long have you

FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME!!! THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR TALKING

SOUNDGARDEN MAILING LIST. How can I express it any clearer? I already

I'd like to see your bibliography, if it exists. Why don't you post it
to the list? It would at least be a useful post, for once. Honestly,
a post listing the source of evrything you claim to have read, would be
one of the most significant posts to this mailing list, in my opinion.
A post like that would actually gain you some respect. Right now,
you have none of mine.

There's only one logical reponse to this. What the fuck are you talking
about?

When you make a comment like that to the list and say you won't read any
responses to it, it means you are a moron. If you were half as
intelligent
as you say you are, you would respond to each response, maintaining your
argument. It's obviously that when you claim at the outset that you
will
not respond to a message that you are not competent or intelligent
enough
to respond. You can't debate someone, so you speak with your mind
closed.

Again, I apologize profusely to the list for this un-Soundgarden-related
rant. I promiseit will not happen again. In light of apple's comments,
especially those about Caryn, I felt the need to respond.
Sincerely,
Geoff

started to hug me really tight, for about ten seconds. I thought that was
really awesome. Anyway, in the middle of the concert, Ben smashes his
guitar into little pieces, probably because the spotlight was on Chris and
not on him. It made him look insanely jealous. I just thought that was
really childish of Ben to smash up his bass.

know. i like it, even though i really do not listen to any country at all.
so thought it would be interesting to see him maybe play it on tv.

or not. YES! Believe it or not, there ARE some female members on this =
list who DON'T lust after the great man!! ;-) {I have my own sexy =
husband to lust after, thank you very much!} I like Soundgarden's music =
- - what any of the band members choose to do in their personal lives is =
no business of mine. =20

Well, i read he was gonna be on last night...nice reliable Ohio rag papers,
huh? Maybe tonight...since I missed SG, maybe just maybe he will make me
smile with Rusty Cage ;-)

Chris' first solo interview??

Let's ask Michael Apple since he has every single article ever written on
Soundgarden. And if not, maybe he could take off a couple of wees<months> to
research the question.

Just wanted to let you know that Chris's voice was fine tonight. He kept
his range low but every now and then hit a nice high one. And he was able
to hold a few of the notes for long intervals..

Now Ben was a different issue...

Well I thought I had taken the news about the cancellation in stride,
but as I woke up yesterday morning the reality started to really hit
me. Rarely a day goes by that I don't pop in my Reading '95 bootleg at
least once, but I couldn't bring myself to listen to it yesterday, and
as what would have been showtime rolled around I started to feel pretty
damned bad. Not only that, but my date decided to bail on our alternate
plans as well. All in all, a day just not worth remembering ...

But I am glad Chris' condition is not very serious. As for a
re-scheduling, maybe they will, maybe they won't. The band may feel bad
about the missed shows and decide to play here before they leave for
Australia, but really, if you lived on the west coast and your band
wound up a US tour and had a couple of weeks before leaving for
Australia, would you really feel like flying to the east coast to play
a couple of gigs or would you rather just say fuggit and get some
well-earned rest? I guess we'll see.

Anyway ... Seth, excellent shots from Chicago. They looked like
pictures taken at a decadent brothel somewhere, with red light pouring
in thru the windows. And they kinda reminded me of a line from
"Mailman:" "A simple reminder/of what you won't see/a November 19 so
sucky/without me." Or something like that ... Seth also raises an
excellent point about Matt. I really feel that people don't give Matt
the attention he deserves at shows. I know it's hard to see him behind
his huge set, but if people would take their eyes off of Chris or the
other front men for a few minutes and focus on Matt they'd really see
the engine that drives the band. Some people believe that drummers are
basically interchangeable, and if you want someone who is just
competent, then they are, but does anyone doubt that Matt's imprint on
the band is absolutely vital? His subtle embellishments are totally
unique and add to the songs he plays a level of total self-assuredness.
(However, Seth, the "stick-recovery" trick he played really is not THAT
difficult. It just takes some practice.)

Biff, that is quite a good point! I hadn't thought about it like that =

Hey, I just heard on the radio what we've all known for a while - that =
Soundgarden is appearing at the up-coming Australian Big Days Out. You =

you, Jamie!). Wahoo!!!

Geoff, I'm afraid I feel I should correct you here. Caryn was NOT on =
the list since the beginning. Several current members were, but not =
Caryn (I know, because I was). She began around the time we were =
organising the t-shirt designs, late last year. I'm a little worried =
that we might become somewhat divided if some people continue to say =
they want Caryn back, while some people obviously don't. Caryn did =

I'm trying to say is just because you (or me, or anyone else) has a =

the list feels the way you do. As Kathie pointed out, Caryn left for =
her own reasons (has anyone else made the connection that she seemed to =
disappear before the Chicago Sommsters gave their reviews, after she'd =
attacked Kathie in what seemed to be a severe case of sour grapes at not =
being involved in organising the Sommsters to meet the band??) - if you =
want to discuss that with her then do so privately, and DON'T presume to =
speak on behalf of the whole list when you do so. If Caryn wants to =
return, then that's her business, her right. It will have nothing to do =
with what any of us might choose to do or say.

Personally, my feelings toward Chris wouldn't change at all if it
was announced he was gay.

By the way: I was at the NYC show on the 16th, my first SG concert
and it ruled even though i was right in the front and it was tough
to see. Who remembers those 3 fights? I was rigt near where they
started.
