From: "mcinturff, dylan" <DYLAN@ed.concord.wvnet.edu>
Subject: bass out of tune

I have to say that I have mixed feelings about the out of tune bass
episode that Ben put on in Chicago. Half of me thinks it was a
really childish way to react to the situation. The pictures of the
Sommsfest on Seth's page identify a guy in one picture with Matt as
the bass tech. If this guy is the bass tech it isn't the one Ben
used to have. The old bass tech looked like a tall goofy balding mad
scientist-type of guy. Ben uses a lot of tunings (just like all the
guys) and it's possible that the new guy just isn't accustomed to
them all, and changes in the set list could lead to confusion. My
band uses four tunings live, and our old guitar tech had trouble
keeping up with a couple of them sometimes. Ben uses EADG, DADG,
DGDG, CGDG, CGCG, DGCF, and if they play 4th of July, CFCG. That's a
lot to keep up with, especially for a hired tech who was likely used
to working with one or two bass tunings. Also, all you guys who are
saying that it's easy to tune a bass: You may be right to a certain
extent, but when you have to deal with five or six tunings,
six basses, several amps, effects, tempermental wireless units, and
making sure everything goes right for the musician you work for in a
different city every night, it's NOT EASY. My band's manager used to
be Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' guitar tech, so I've heard first hand
about what a job it is. ON THE OTHER HAND- it can really fuck up a
show if the guitars aren't in tune. If you're handed a guitar that's
either out of tune or in the wrong tuning, it can mess up a show.
Both guitar players in the band have had this happen, and they did
get pissed off.
just some thoughts-

that tickets for tomorrow's show will be honored at the new date. you
can get refunds, but i didn't really listen because i wasn't interested,
because i still want to go :> umm.. i have to make a few phone calls..
if you want to call and hear the message for yourself the number is:

and you'll get a computerized message. press 2 for directions to

if it is possible to get a card to him that won't be filed away with the rest
of the fan mail.
Maybe we could try sending it to Silver w/ a big SOMMS on it. They'd
probly pay at least a little attention to one card from 600 or so devoted

This sounds like a great idea though. I think we should send the

Hello. I am DESPARATELY looking for the Soundgarden Bootleg entitled
"Stolen Prayers". On top of having several false leads, I have
searched and searched and run into dead end after dead end. If you
have it or know of any way that I could get my hands on it, I would
forever regard you as one of the most decent human beings on this
earth. Admittingly, I do not have much else besides money to trade,
however, I have three good and rare boots in my collection:

"Push"(Norway 1994) - Soundgarden (Sound not as good as other two)
"Fresh Deadly Rarities"- Soundgarden (All rarities recorded in studio
i.e. EXCELLENT sound. One of the most
sought after SG Boots there is)
"Vortical" - Pearl Jam (Although I am, frankly, not that
much into Pearl Jam, THIS IS AN
                                        INCREDIBLE BOOT)

All of these are the original CD's.

     Thank You for any help,

     MJE

P.S. At the very least, I could help search around the
Raleigh/Durham/ Chapel Hill (North Carolina) area and search for rare
Boots that you might be looking for in exchange for you doing the same
in your area. In case you don't already know, the area I am in is the
center of 3 colleges, thus, there are some very good music stores that
carry a lot of rare stuff.

THere's no problem at all, Monnica.

A few SOMMSsters have responding to my little question with huge egos,
thinking that their CHicago posts were some integral part of my book.
THis is a book on Kim Thayil. So, I'm only using your experiences
about Kim THayil in the book. SInce you didn't have much contact with Kim
Thayil, you are not a big source for the work.
I just thought some of you might like to be mentioned in the book, so
I asked.
Some of the Chicago SOMMSsters posted me to let me know that they
wanted to have their Chicago experiences included in the book, others
politely asked to be excluded.
But, those who seem to have an inflated sense of self, should be aware
that this is just for fun. I could easily leave ALL the posts out and the
book wouldn't be hurt by it at all.
So, if you don't want your posts included, just let me know in a
polite manner, and it's not a problem.

on their experiences at the SOMMSfest as part of my book. I want to use it
as part of the section on the 1996 Fall Tour in support of Down On The
Upside.
I still need more info on Kim childhood and teen years.
Does anyone know when and under what circumstances Kim's family went
to India when he was a kid?
Does anyone know about Kim's high school experiences? Like how he met
Hiro and Bruce Pavitt at school, and what kind of curriculum his school had
?
Also, I wonder if anyone knows anything about Kim's immediate family,
like their names, locations and stuff? I want to make sure I am prepared
when I finally make the interview I'm trying to schedule.
The book is still in research mode (as it will be for a few months),
and I've only now gotten to my second outline. The outline itself is about
forty pages long, so this book's going to be a whopper. :) No stone will
be left unturned. This will be the most comprehensive biography you will
ever see. Kim deserves it, don't you think?

Thanks for all your help. :)

I went and told my mom the news yesterday about Chris cancelling the shows

really bothering me how you worry about people you don't know." 'SCUSE
ME???? Can you believe it? Not only that, my friend(who I THought was my
best friend...who came to the concert with me, who caused me to have a bad
time)said " Don't listen to Zero Chance, that song makes you depressed." I
said "Nope, makes me feel good." "She says..I think you're a little too into
them!" Anyway.

Seth, I didn't ge the mail for the 17th, could you send it to me>?

I don't remember being the organizer of any events, but this is from
today's ATN (important content is in the last paragraph):

Illness Causes Soundgarden To Postpone Shows

Tour to resume Wed. night in Washington, D.C.

Addicted To Noise staff writer Gil Kaufman reports: Soundgarden were
forced to cancel the last of three sold-out shows in New York on
Sunday night due to singer Chris Cornell's acute laryngitis. According
to a managment source, Cornell's voice began to deteriorate late
Friday night after the band's first Roseland Ballroom show and after
Saturday's gig Cornell saw a doctor and was ordered to rest his voice
for at least a few days.

The band cancelled Sunday's show and tonight's (Tues., Now. 19)
scheduled gig in Boston. According to a fax from the band's label, all
tickets will be refunded at point of purchase, adding that
"Soundgarden regrets having to cancel the two shows but look forward
to resuming their tour on Wednesday [in Washington, D.C.]." A source
at A&M, the label the group record for, said it wasn't clear yet if
the shows will be made up at a later time.

In other Soundgarden news, the band served as facilitators for a
gathering of their faithful in Chicago recently. Twenty-three
Soundgarden fans, part of a crew of hundreds of on-line disciples who
call themselves The Sommsters, met each other for the first time on
Nov. 9 and spent a weekend hanging out with the webmaster of the
unofficial Soundgarden site and organizer of the event (MIT's Seth
Perlman), having a few meals and checking out the two sold-out shows
at the Aragon Ballroom. As a special treat, after going backstage to
meet the band, each Sommster was escorted onto the stage to watch a
Soundgarden song from the wings.

taken from _blah blah blah_, june 1996:

This month, Soundgarden will appear on the last ever edition of
the long running TV comedy favourite, Saturday Night Live, hosted by Jim
Carrey, thus breaking their final taboo. "We had two things we said we'd
never do. One was play when the sun was out, which we've now done, and the
other was live TV. But Jim Carrey said he wouldn't do the programme unless
we were on, so we relented."

(me again) in the end, I think the guys in the band were big
enough fans of carrey to consider doing the show with him, and then when
he said that they had to be there if he was going to host the decision was
sort of taken out of their hands, so to speak. btw, it is interesting that
soundgarden performed on the last snl (I only learned that today), the
last lollapalooza and the last big day out here in australia.

other stuff that might be worthy of your attention: in addition
to both kim and jerry playing on the next pigeonhed record, I read
yesterday that drummers mark pickerel (formerly of the screaming trees)
and matt chaimberlain (formerly of pearl jam) will also contribute.

butow was out in the shops here yesterday, so I snapped it up
(steve, your's will be in the mail soon). I'm not sure what to think of
the b-sides. while it is cool to have both 'gun' and 'get on the snake'
live on cd, it still seems kind of lame that they would include those two
as unreleased material. as for 'slice of space jam'....well, I think I'll
prefer to call it 'space ham'. ok, I know it is a jam/free form-type
thing. but it would be cool if there was some sort of structure to it, not
just a bunch of fairly uninteresting noodling that doesn't really develop
into anything (take the jam that the band plays before half on the armoury
boot. now *that* is a worthwhile jam).

since each member of the band has virtually their own library of
songs, partial songs and riffs, surely they could have used something of
that nature? I place 'space ham' (hopefully it will grow on me) somewhere
between 'jerry garcia's finger' and 'brewicide', a song which absolutely
*kills* this jam session. probably closer to 'jerry...' in that regard :)

I don't think that the band are on their farewell tour, no matter
what that particular radio station is spouting. it sounds like so much
bullshit that it would be hard for any reasonable listener to believe
*anything* they have to say. what it sounds like to me is that the station
is just playing up the tickets they have for all it's worth, and bugger
the listeners. that is pretty sick.

now that I have that off my chest (I harbour a strong disliking
for radio djs), there is a small element of truth to the above statement
that the station-heads probably wouldn't even be aware. as we all know,
soundgarden started out in seattle as a live band. live shows in small
pubs were their bread and butter (ok, it's a cliche, but I'm tired). but I
read in the most recent issue of _drum_ magazine that matt hopes to move
the band away from the live circuit in future years, in order to
concentrate more on recording albums. he adds that the band may only have
another two or three records left in them (this despite the massive
amounts of music all four members *must* be sitting on, considering
home-recording, 4-tracks and that they all write music as a hobby).

this puts a lot of doubt in my mind. a band who I once thought
would be close to immortal seems to be considering life on the other side.
imho it is hard to imagine a group of four individuals who are more stable
or tight-knit than soundgarden. I thought their individuality, purpose,
honesty and seeming contentedness would lead to them being one of the most
enduring musical acts of all-time. there have been no ridiculously long
breaks between albums, there have been no public cat-fights and there has
been basically no disquiet or acrimony within the band itself. but after a
relative explosion in the number of guest appearances and side projects
surrounding ben, matt, chris and kim, I begin to wonder where their focus
lies.

on the other hand, maybe the move away from touring is a good
sign, not a bad one. touring can take a lot out of a band; the constant
travel and closeness of world tours can lead to the friction/burn out that
may one day lead to a break up. if soundgarden can avoid this by touring
less in the future, then that is cool by me. if taking full control over
recording and production responsibilities reduces pressure in the studio,
then I'm all for it. hey, the band can record their records in their
basements if they need to. I don't mind. I just hope that their seeming
reluctance to continue on the hamster wheel (re: outshined) of touring
doesn't indicate a band on the decline, emotional or otherwise.

	comments?
