     Hi everybody!

Haven't posted in a while because how does one come up with something
as compelling as the goings-on at the Chicago SOMMSFest. I mean, I
could tell the story of how, while walking to work, I saw a discarded
box in the trash with the BMF logo on it. I could further relate the
way in which I over-ran a bag lady, two winos, and a school child in
my head long dash to retrieve said box and look inside it. Finding
inside it every piece of music ever recorded by any member, past or
present, of SG, in every form, from vinyl to CD. Obviously, this would
be a major coup worthy of intense and animated discussion on this
list. Even if this story were true, which it is not; even if I lied
and said it was true, it would just crumble in comparison to the
     SOMMSFest!

All I can say is "Gee Wiz! You guys are SO lucky!"

Oh well, at least I'll be at the Roseland NYC show tomorrow and Sun.
I guess I'll have to settle for just seeing them from the
     crowd...TWICE!!! HE HE HE!

I'll try to make the SOMMS presence felt at the shows.

I wonder if from now on merely "seeing" SG and not "meeting and
greeting" them at future shows, will be good enough for the
SOMMSFesters, or are they forever spoiled?

     SG hear we come!

For those of you in the S.F. Bay Area, I read on the KSJO web page that
KSJO is having a "pre-party" for SG on Nov. 21st. I haven't heard
anything on the radio but maybe someone else has heard of it? According
to the web page they will be giving out tickets to the show on Dec.
5th, cds, cd catalogue, "and a ton more" (whatever that means). It's
supposed to be at Cheers in Sunnyvale on the 21st at 9:00 p.m. Maybe
I'll go just to see what "a ton more" means....

> Jamie, I have written a similar post before, over a year ago now. I understand what you're saying, completely. I too take a great deal of notice of the music. It is the overall sound of a song that will first attract me to it - then the lyrics follow suit. Some of my favourite songs are my favourites because they SOUND GOOD. (e.g. "Big Dumb Sex"). With those songs I might not ever even take the time out to really get to know and understand the lyrics. But then I also have favourites that are so because of their powerful, emotional lyrics (e.g. "Indifference"), but even those songs have a decent tune.

And I'd like to say that I agree with *both* of you. Its the music that
attracts me to a song rather than the lyrics. The lyrics are secondary.
I know some pople who can't listen to an album unless they've fully
dissected the lyrics and analysed and decomposed them down to their most
fundamental levels, but I really can't be bothered with all of that. The
way I see it, song lyrics are written by an idividual, based on their own
thoughts, experiences and suchlike, therefore, there's little point
trying to interpret them as you can NEVER get inside another person's
brain and know what was going through their mind when they wrote a
particualr lyric.

So yeah, its the music that does it for me as well. I can really
get into the sound of a song, pick out little bits like riffs and the
like which appeal to me.

Some lyrics do have an emotional effect, however. That's almost
unavoidable. And it's funny that you mentioned "Indifference", as that
song has a very personal meaning to me as well. Snap!! :)

Whatver the problem. Ben has no right to go hitting people if he doesn't
get his own way, and I don't care how famous he is. This is a CIVILISED
society. If he's got a few personal problems and can't deal with the
"angry youg man" which is obviously so prevalent in his (stage)
character, then he should seek professional help. What are psychologist for?

Coveresely, I do agree with you regarding his musical input to
the band. He has written some of the best Soundgarden songs. "Face
Pollution" and "Somewhere" on BMF and "Switch Opens" and "An Unkind" are
just wto good examples. However (and this is gonna cause a bit of
contention, but what the hell), I do think that Hiro was a more
accomplished bass player (even if he never wrote as good songs as Ben).
And, he never went around kicking and spitting at people when he didn't
get his own way or when women were screaming at Chris instead of him...

120 min. none the less. Pretty straight forward video. Johnny in the studio

obvious dibelief!! It's not that it's that bad or anything. It's just so

Just saw Motorvision for the first time. Its probably been discussed to
death before I even got here, but what an amazing performance! I'd listen
to an audio recording of this as much as I'd listen to BMF. Not having
seen SG in the day of Little Joe, it was cool to see that. The version of
Mind Riot sounds like its going to burst at any moment, but lays down
that methodical groove until the end. And Slaves and Bulldozers...geez,
forget about it! To anyone still uninitiated, see this thing ASAP. It
shows the band in all of their melodic, noisy splendor.

What kind of animal is Matt Cameron anyway? Has he ever missed a beat in
JCP? I've seen and/or heard five or six different performances of this
song and it was just as incredible last Tuesday as it was four years ago.

Subject: Roseland concert, November 17

Last night was supposed to have been my first SG concert. But it was
cancelled due to illness. To be honest, I was actually surprised at
how badly I felt about this. I usually take things in stide. This
concert was the one good thing I had to look forward to during the
past three unpleasant months.
Cynthia, who was there on Friday and Saturday, said
Chris' voice was going on Saturday, so I guess that was the illness.
This is quite a disappointment. Refunds are being offered, but really, I
would prefer that they reschedule. :-( On a happier note, I got to meet some
of the list members (Jennifer and Christine (Christina?), and the earlier
mentined Cynthia) We all went to see "Hype!" which was good, but lacking.
Live footage of the Gits was shown, but no mention of Mia's murder. Mother
Love Bone was also mentioned several times but there was no live footage,
which would have been nice. Considering that Susan Silver manages SG and
Alice in Chains, I thought they would have more interviews with her. Still,
overall it was a thoughtful, funny documentary of the Seattle scene.

Since I didn't get the chance to see SG in New York, I'm going to try to make
another concert. This is a long shot, but If anyone has one or more
tickets they would be willing to sell for the Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. concerts, please e-mail me.
Thanks.

Subject: SPENDING THE WEEKEND WITH CHRIS

I had a dream this weekend that was ironic to the comments on Chris getting
sick and canceling his show. It went something like this:

Inside of a room of a concert arena, me and a group of people(my guess is
that they were female SOMMSters) were talking to Chris. Now actually,
Chris was getting sicker by the minute. It was so weird how he took his
shirt off, looked incredibly skinny and pasty, and then he started babbling
to himself(I forgot about what) He was kinda acting like Dustin Hoffman in
Rain Man, but he acted as if really ill. Soon, an entourage came and put
him on a stretcher. I remember skipping some scenes and somehow I ended up
inside of this massive airplane that was about to take off shortly. I saw
chris in corner on that stretcher, in which he was strapped to it with the
stretcher standing upright and up against a wall, looking deathly ill. For
some reason, Lars Ulrich of Metallica was explaining Chris's condition to
me...

I also finally looked at the issue of Details. Not very many pictures of
Chris, but some damn good ones.

Some of you out there have already heard the version of Johnny Cash's
"Rusty Cage" I haven't heard it on the radio yet. I live in a place as
diverse as Los Angeles, and all I get is the commercialism of alternative
radio!!(there are only a few good stations) Anyway, I stayed up all night
watching 120 Minutes because Matt Pinfield announced that Cash's video
would be coming up...Hell, it came at the end of the show(I can't believe I
stayed up 2 hours and lost sleep) But since I don't watch much television,
I had to see it now or never. His version is pretty "countrified", but
it's still okay. I still prefer SG's version.

Kim has said he's not married, but he does have a live-in
girlfriend. I think he referred to her as his common-law wife.

AntiDog writes:

Okay, what's your respective source on this one? I mean I've read articles
on
these guys for ions, and besides the plethora of personal info on Chris (and
the obvious fact that he's married), I know only of a recent SPIN reference
to Matt's (I think live-in) girlfriend. I've not once seen anything on Kim
or
Ben's personal info (even going back 5 or 6 years).... even when the writers
are describing their houses or friends, or whatever.... so what are the
details here guys?

By the way, I was just wondering...

Soundgarden is a band, right?
Bands play music, right?
So, this really is a music list, isn't it?

Sorry, if I offended anyone, but I just thought that since we were

Subject: SG IN NYC 2nd NIGHT

     Hi everybody,

I went to Sat.'s show, and in light of Sun.'s cancellation all I can
say is thank God Cyn Siragusa came thru with an extra set of tkts for
     Sat. Thanks again!

Well, I met up with Cyn and Carl and Heather at the predetermined
location. My buddy Mike and I had actually gotten there first to have
something to eat. I really enjoyed meeting everybody. Having a nice
bunch of like-minded people to watch the show with really enhanced it
for me. Cyn kept track of the set-list so I'll let her take care of
that. I'll just share a few of my impressions.

First of all, Surfdog(Carl) was one of the gang and he describes our
location in the crowd very well in his post: Stage-right, about 20'
from the stage and in front of the stack. Chris and Kim were always in
view, Ben would sometimes be hidden by the stack, but all 3 of them
took turns stepping in front of the stack. At these times, you could
practically touch them. Seeing Matt required some extra special effort
since he is further back on the stage.

I managed to find a fold-up chair which I promptly stood on for the
1st full hour of the show. This was truly an added perspective since
not only could I see SG better, but I could also look out across the
entire crowd. When Chris demanded that all lights be turned off. I was
treated to a surreal view of a shadowy Chris addressing a shadowy
moving mass of people that seemed blended as one, due to the lack of
illumination. The mass would ebb and flow like water and then all of a
sudden a human form(crowd surfer) would emerge from the mass like a
fish jumping up out of the water. I had this unique perch until a
security guard finally took the chair away from me.

I've read some reviews that said Chris's voice was shot and that the
show wasn't that good, but I have to disagree. When he spoke to the
crowd you could hear a hoarseness in his voice, but when he sang he
was INTENSE. So intense in fact that Mike and I both commented that if
he kept it up he wouldn't be able to perform on Sun.(which as we know
is what happened). We had better acoustics at LOLLA but that is
probabaly because we were center stage at LOLLA instead of Stage right
at Roseland. Anyway, there was more than enough energy to have me
singing along at the top of my lungs, to the point that I am quite
     hoarse myself.

When he did his solo BHS the crowd sang it for him. He seemed truly
impressed. I was close enough to be able to read his lips as he backed
away from the mike and said "Thats really great." and "You guys have
really got." He played the entire song solo as opposed to only part of
it at LOLLA and at other shows this tour. Regardless of how you feel
about BHS, the moment was SPECIAL!

Ben only spit on the audience once(not in my direction) and even that
seemed to be more in fun than anger. In the middle of the show someone
threw something at Ben, and Chris good naturedly warned the idiot not
to "mess with this dude because he has a real dark side." At the end
Chris and Ben both fell over into Kim's speakers. As Chris got up he
threw a beautiful Gibson Les Paul into the audience. A near riot broke
out. A security guard eventually retrieved it and walked right past me
with it. It was in one piece, remarkabley, but all the strings had
been torn off it. Later on in the subway, on the way home, we saw
several people with sections of guitar string.

Anyway those are some of my impressions. I loved the show and it was
great to meet Cyn(again) and Carl and Heather.

     Hoping Chris feels better,
     Paul

I just wanted to update you on the progress of my Kim Thayil biography
.
First of all, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, Seth, for putting
together that archive of SG articles on the homepage. It is the most
valuable resource I've found for information on Kim Thayil. You are
getting a formal thank you in the foreword of the book. :)
Also, I want to ask the Chicago-SOMMS-sters if I can use their emails
on their experiences at the SOMMSfest as part of my book. I want to use it
as part of the section on the 1996 Fall Tour in support of Down On The
Upside.
I still need more info on Kim childhood and teen years.
Does anyone know when and under what circumstances Kim's family went
to India when he was a kid?
Does anyone know about Kim's high school experiences? Like how he met
Hiro and Bruce Pavitt at school, and what kind of curriculum his school had
?
Also, I wonder if anyone knows anything about Kim's immediate family,
like their names, locations and stuff? I want to make sure I am prepared
when I finally make the interview I'm trying to schedule.
The book is still in research mode (as it will be for a few months),
and I've only now gotten to my second outline. The outline itself is about
forty pages long, so this book's going to be a whopper. :) No stone will
be left unturned. This will be the most comprehensive biography you will
ever see. Kim deserves it, don't you think?

Thanks for all your help. :)

Some are better than others, all of them are GIFs and look better on
monitors with higher color depths (because dithering sucks). Let me

well with all this talk about hoping for a spring tour, i for one am very much

be a HUGE killer disappointment if they had to cancel more dates on the tour,
Chris's health and voice is way too valuable to be taken lightly. i don't
