Subject: Hater/Sommsfest '96/Caryn's gone...

Greetings Sommsters. First off, congratulations to everyone who attended
Sommsfest '96 in Chicago. You all lived my dream. Thanks for all the
great posts about it. Why aren't these posts on the website though?

I bought the Hater cd finally, three years after its release. (Hey man,
at least I ain't that Russell fella who still hasn't got the TOTD cd :) )
Here are my thoughts: When I first listened to it my first impression was..
it wasnt that good. However I was wrong. I then listened to it again..and
again and again. It was addicting. This stuff *is* good. Apparently there
are a lot of you who dislike Brian Wood's vocal abilities. I have to
disagree. There was only one song on there that I totally hated his vocals
on and that was the song Roadside. He just sounds so damn cheesy on that one.
But overall, I really like the CD. And I will be buying their next album
whenever it comes out. A question which I asked before: What is the deal
with Brian Wood leaving? If any one has the specifics/info on this I'd
appreciate it.

Oh yeah, I heard from Seth this morning that Caryn Rose unsubscribed
from the list. Hmm. As much as I disagreed with her I still respected her.
I am going to miss her. (Did I just say that?) She definitely had a
"presence" on here and when I saw no posts from her all week, I knew
something was up. What do you all think about it?

I say AMEN! I think I might have been the only person to defend Ben in some
manner (not effectively, but to some extent.). I always loved the music Ben
wrote for the band, and if he wants to act like that on stage so be it. I
understand also what you say about the tuning incident. The guy is a
sound-man. If he can't properly tune a bass, then he needs some serious help
(although one might wonder WHY the HELL did the guy get the job in the first
place.) If my guitar wasn't tuned before a big concert, I'd crack some heads
and not think twice about it. But hey, that's just me. If someone has had a
bad experience (as most people have) and you feel I'm a jackass for speaking
without experience, then I'm sorry. Untill the day that Ben throws foreign
objects at me without provocation, I'll have to stay on his side. Therapy? I
got an idea. Why don't you tell him yourself? (not you, dumo13)

What is "dumo" anyway?

Kim has said he's not married, but he does have a live-in
girlfriend. I think he referred to her as his common-law wife.

AntiDog writes:

Okay, what's your respective source on this one? I mean I've read articles on
these guys for ions, and besides the plethora of personal info on Chris (and
the obvious fact that he's married), I know only of a recent SPIN reference
to Matt's (I think live-in) girlfriend. I've not once seen anything on Kim or
Ben's personal info (even going back 5 or 6 years).... even when the writers
are describing their houses or friends, or whatever.... so what are the
details here guys?

In response to: Gonzo <jgg@pilot.msu.edu>

I have also noticed that all of the article Kim does are in Guitar magazines
for musicians. I think he is the only member of the group who has not sang on
any of the SG songs, not even on backup vocals.

AntiDog writes:

Yeah, I have a number of the old Guitar World and Guitar Player mags, some
old ROCKETs from Seattle and oddly enough there was a great interview in a
REQUEST magazine (a record store freebie)... and it is cool the constant
distillation and analysis of the SG musical creation and presentation... I
wish mass media would take a similar art-minded view. - and yes, I do think
he's the only one without vocals on the album... except maybe UltraMega
OK.... he's got a lot of lyrics on that one though....

Subject: Studio Demos and Outtakes

Does anyone out there have studio demos that SG has done before they
recorded their albums??? I'm not talking about the demos on the Stolen
Prayers and Supermainstream bootlegs or the b-sides on the import
singles either...I mean the direct studio demos. Its nearly impossible
to find these, since the band probably has them in their own personal
archives. A few years ago, I stumbled upon a DAT copy of some demos
taken from the Badmotorfinger sessions. The songs on it were: Rusty
Cage, Birth Ritual, Fell On Black Days (version 1), Fell On black Days
(version 2), Cold Bitch, No Attention, Jesus Christ Pose, Outshined,
Jam. Unfortunately I couldn't obtain a copy of the tape, but it was
nevertheless amazing. The songs were all in their early rough form and
contained some very interesting arrangements that did not exist in the
album versions. The demo versions of Birth Ritual and one of the Fell On
Black Days demos eventually appeared as b-sides for the singles. Also,
there are several demos of songs that I think are in existence from the
DOTU sessions: Christy(instrumental), Anxious, Kyle Petty, Applebite,
Never the Machine Forever.

If anyone has a copy of these tapes or has any other copies of studio
demos from other albums, please let me know! I am willing to trade and
have many shows in my large SG collection...Somehow though, I don't
think I'll ever find these gems...

Thanks...

BTW, Biff, the UK music press is notoriously fickle about bands (we're

this Mark Lund person is after a job at NME when he leaves college :-)

Subject: On Stage Verbage (Soundgarden & a SP story)

alot of bands seem to be really good at working the crowd in between
songs.
when sg was here, i really enjoyed chris' quick comments. they were
cool.
ben was engaging in the generous deed of passing around water to us in
the pit.

but i have a story, involving the smashing pumpkins, if you want to hear
it....

i'm from Winnipeg, and i saw SP in september.
i was amazed, because it was such a powerful show.
but i must say that d'arcy isn't too smart.

it's cool to joke around with the crowd and throw some insults about the
city and stuff. billy and james were having fun, saying that the states
have a better hockey team than us, etc.....
it was cool, no offense taken.
then d'arcy pipes up with a spiel about the us taking over canada, blah
blah blah.
everyone kinda went "huh?"
it was nuts. she went on and on.....until billy jumped in and cracked a
joke about thiking of them as bryan adams or the hip.

anyways, i just think that d'arcy really doesn't understand what she is
talking about most of the time. she took a joke waaaay to far, to a
point where it wasn't even close to being funny. good thing she doesn't
speak much. but james, he deserves to have more of a voice...he's CRAZY.
it's cool.

oh yeah, to all the assholes in winnipeg who didn't like the 45-minute
song at the end of the 3rd encore: fuck all y'all. it had meaning, boys
and girls.didn't you get it when billy said something like "we always
have and always will be the smashing pumpkins"????? (if that's not the
right quote, please tell me).

thank god the guys in sg aren't as lame as d'arcy.

anyways, that's my rant....

Chris Cornell?? Who's that?? Hmmmm... guess who *I* finally got a

let's just say that the wallpaper on my computer this week is flavored

Ok, I know it's been brought up before by PenCapChew (?)... but *I* want
to know... who exactly is going to the TX shows?? I'll be at both the
Houston and Austin shows... and I want to know if you people are planning on
meeting up anywhere. Somehow I suspect that it won't be at a bar. ;-) Am I
going to be the oldest TX SOMMSter at the shows? Wait... Brian will be at
the Austin show, right? He's got a few years on me. ;-) BTW Brian... IHOP,
the whipped cream is calling us. =) Anyway... TX SOMMSters... e-mail Pen or
me and let us know if you want to meet up before the shows. Even if you
don't, my picture is in the member's directory. If you see me at one of the
shows... say hi. I'm going to both shows by my lonesome, so I'm sure to be
bored while waiting for SG to take the stage. =)

As a side note to anyone who listens to the Toadies (sorry, it's a
Dallas music thing): I heard tonight that Clark Vogeler (formerly with
Funland <sob> I miss them!!) has gotten the job as guitarist with the
Toadies. I think he got the job today or yesterday... so remember, you heard
it here first!! ;-) Speaking of... the Toadies have a really nifty song on
the "Sandy Does Dallas" compilation CD. (15 Dallas bands covering songs from
the movie "Grease"). One last thing... all you Dallas people missed a killer
show tonight at Trees. Course of Empire, Caulk and Nocturne. You're going
to feel baaaaad about missing all these great shows someday!!!!
