Subject: Interpretation of BHS

That was an interesting interpretation of BHS, Michael Apple.

I have a completely different feeling about that song. I always thought of
the black hole sun as depression. Depression and suicide run in my family
on my father's side; maybe that explains why when I hear
"wash away the rain" I think
"wash away the pain".
In other words, the song has always said to me:

depression, won't you come, and wash the pain of life away

The "landscape" described by the lyrics seems rather bleak to me. The
tone seems to be one of weary distaste and indifferent anger. The song
describes a state of mind that I can't help translating as depression
and despair.

This is just another example of how each listener puts a new spin on any
message- I'm not trying to say that one interpretation is correct and the
other is not.

DAMN STRAIGHT!! Is this an actual review? I can't believe someone would even
THINK of relating SG to Whitesnake. That sounds like someone who just
doesn't like good music. Oh well, some people...

I just wanted to agree with whoever it was who said that the opening bands on
this SG tour should be treated better. I have never heard Tenderloin, but
Rocket From The Crypt is a great band! They are huge in San Diego and I have
seen them play many times and they rocked! Maybe they aren't playing as well
on this tour, but I find it hard to believe they are actually getting booed
for not playing well!?!. Well only 6 more days until I see SG at the Patriot
Center, woo hoo!!! Then I can give you guys a better report on RFTC and of
course our beloved SG.

Subject: Ben

I've been thinking alot about Vikki's post about her experience onstage
at the Aragon. While I agree that it must have been a terribly
frightening thing being caught up in this Ben hurricane, I wonder why
you were surprised by it, especially considering how many times you've
seen the band. Maybe its that you had never seen the hidden effects (the
terrified techs etc.) of his outbursts. Or maybe, like probably many of
us, you never took them too seriously. Its unfortunate that his temper
tantrum ruined a special time for you, but in a way I'm glad that its
getting out in the open.

I agree that Ben's behavior is irresponsible and immature. I've always
thought that, but kind of ignored it. The problem, though, is that the
behavior is tolerated, in fact is admired, by so many fans. I think its
sad that people consider getting taunted and spit on to be an honor (am
I wrong, or does it seem that its mainly guys who feel that way?). All
that does is encourage the behavior. Ben shows a lack of respect for
humanity in general, but as long as people think its so cool to be
disrespected by someone just because he's a rock star what reason does
he have to change? In my experience people that treat others the way Ben
does usually don't feel very good about themselves - alot of people talk
and act big on the outside when they feel small and insignificant on the
inside. Why else would someone have this seemingly uncontrollable desire
to demean others?

I don't know what the answer is, because I doubt that he's going to
change. But it sure would be a step forward if people would stop
swooning with glee when he spits on them or others, or does other
disrespectful things. Thanks Vikki for showing us what it looked like
from the "inside". Talk about a public relations nightmare!

"A beautiful, desolate hymn to alienation, lonliness and misanthropy.
But that's enough about Prisoner; Cell Block H, heeer's Soundgarden.
With another tuneless, po-faced slice of 'heavy' balladry. Doesn't
sound as much like Whitsnake as they normally do, but excruciating
all the same. Just isn't the same without Bea Smith is it?"

Subject: Selling Seattle to the world

My theories just keep being confirmed (she says as she pats herself on
the back). The Details Chris interview talks about "the hair", which has
recently become a common topic on the list again. Several months ago I
mentioned that I thought the sex-god stuff was a put-on that the band
used to get a foot in the door. Well, here's what it says in Details
(edited to save space):

Jim Hendrix had his mojo.Chris Cornell has his hair...Its kinetic
energy, as captured in stop motion by Sub Pop's house photographer
Charles Peterson, was for a long time practically the trademark of the
new Seattle rock, a wave of purest motion that announced the scene's
distance from the bulging-eyed, bald guy conventions of traditional punk
rock before you'd so much as heard a note.
Like Soundgarden's heavy, riff-laden tuneage, the hair was a wink at
the testosterone-soaked conventions of '70's rock - simultaneously
mocking heavy metal while being more or less heavy metal itself...
The photo of Chris, or rather of Chris and his hair, ended up on the
cover of Soundgarden's Screaming Life EP, which was the first important
relic both of Sub Pop and what became known as the Seattle sound. CHRIS
AND HIS HAIR WERE PART OF THE PACKAGE SUB POP USED TO SELL SEATTLE TO
THE WORLD - THE SIZZLE THAT SOLD THE STEAK. (emphasis mine)-- Details
December 1996

There is so much more to Chris than his hair, or his looks in general.
When I read posts from people complaining about his hair or his weight I
wonder why I don't see what they are seeing. Maybe its because I tend to
be more attracted to what a person is on the inside than on the outside.
I'm also an eye person, and Chris' eyes just suck you in - absolutely
mesmerizing. But then what do they say? The eyes are the window to the
soul?

Subject: SG IN NYC

     Hi everybody!

Haven't posted in a while because how does one come up with something
as compelling as the goings-on at the Chicago SOMMSFest. I mean, I
could tell the story of how, while walking to work, I saw a discarded
box in the trash with the BMF logo on it. I could further relate the
way in which I over-ran a bag lady, two winos, and a school child in
my head long dash to retrieve said box and look inside it. Finding
inside it every piece of music ever recorded by any member, past or
present, of SG, in every form, from vinyl to CD. Obviously, this would
be a major coup worthy of intense and animated discussion on this
list. Even if this story were true, which it is not; even if I lied
and said it was true, it would just crumble in comparison to the
     SOMMSFest!

All I can say is "Gee Wiz! You guys are SO lucky!"

Oh well, at least I'll be at the Roseland NYC show tomorrow and Sun.
I guess I'll have to settle for just seeing them from the
     crowd...TWICE!!! HE HE HE!

I'll try to make the SOMMS presence felt at the shows.

I wonder if from now on merely "seeing" SG and not "meeting and
greeting" them at future shows, will be good enough for the
SOMMSFesters, or are they forever spoiled?

     SG hear we come!

i understood that as being that the just asking if they wanted to
play being the un-Seattle thing to do. i don't think they mean anything
about the collaboration itself. but i could be wrong and i didn't
quite understand what was so un-Seattle and un-showbusinessy about
that either...i'm just out of it i guess, sorry!

Subject: chicago report (late)

Ok-
I'll try to keep this brief since I'm sure you're all sick of chicago tales
by now. But it was a time. I really can't say enough about the great
treatment we were given by Erin. Bringing Seth out for the weekend was a
great surprise. It was totally appropriate that he was there. I was in the
second meeting with the band & found them all to be really nice. I hadn't
thought of anything to bring with me to be signed. Everyone had pictures,
album covers, etc... I just didn't really plan for it. Then while in
chicago i had a last minute brainstorm. My seattle bus schedule! I went
into the room second after Seth to meet the band. We must've looked like
deer in headlights because Ben came out & said, "Shouldn't you guys look
more happy?" I asked Matt a question about a jazz band called "Motel 6" i
saw him drum with last year. He said he'd play with them again if they
asked. Then he saw my bus schedule & smiled. He said he used to ride the
same bus & then he signed the schedule. Kim came out all smiling. He
signed our stuff and left the room quickly. Ben saw my schedule & said,
"cool". The List Thug jumped into action & got the lowdown on the Hater
halloween show. Bonnie grabbed a lighter & lit his cigarette. He was really
nice to talk to. I mosied over to Chris & thanked him for meeting us. He
signed my schedule & wrote "thanx" on it. We took pictures with him which i
just got developed. Wow-finally-a picture of myself & chris cornell-and THE
LIST THUG!!!!!!!!! Thuggie took the opportunity to stick his big melon head
over chris' shoulder as the picture was being taken! (It's pretty funny).
I'm just glad i didn't have lettuce in my teeth or something. My next
favorite shot is of Matt & Seth with a mysterious red bag in the corner of
the room which i think is Kathie's pumpkin bread. The band made their
goodbyes & Erin took us to the balcony to watch the shows. Speaking as a
petite female-i was very thankful for that seating. And both nights too!
The first night rocked & as Eliza said, the next night we were all a little
worn out. But the sunday show was the best i've ever heard them play.
Saturday night Chris dedicated rusty cage to johnny cash, so when he
started making a dedication on sunday night, i thought it would be for
another performer. But when he dedicated BHS to us-my heart dropped. I was
really touched. And i don't think any of us were expectimg that to happen
on the second night. It made everything so special. Musical highlights:
Dusty, Slaves & Bulldozers, JCP-everything really. I know some people were
disturbed by Ben's behavior. Personally, I thought his stage antics were
really fun to watch on sunday night. Knocking speakers over-not letting the
road crew pick them up-even spitting on seth-i was roaring. (sorry seth-but
i think you should take it as some weird rite of passage). I saw the Hater
show on halloween. After Ben knocked down Caryn-he got back onstage & then
dove right over my head. Luckily i ducked-otherwise i'd probably be hurt
too. But i'm not surprised by any of this behavior. I'm not saying wrong or
right-just not surprised & that's how he is. It's Hater & SG. It's not a
hootie & the blowfish concert. Anyway it was great meeting all the Somms
gang. Big thanks to Toni & Rita for housing, feeding, chauffering etc.... I
never guessed that you could squish 8 somms women into one car! It was a
great escapist weekend. Back to reality. Seattle somms contingent-see ya @
Zeke on the 23rd.

Ya know, the thing about grunge that I liked when it started was
that
it rejected the big hair, spandex guys as trendy and instead took the
route
where you just wear whatever you want. Now, that's degenerated to the
so-
called "grunge" look, where you must wear flannel, have semi-long
greasy
hair, be unshaven but not bearded, and be all pale like a heroin
user...

Kinda like the "new alternative" whatever new song comes on the radio or
MTV...

Now, Calvin Klein is making millions off of turning teens with low

     self-esteem onto looking like junkies.

You are so right. This IS his modus operandi. That and selling little
tshirts with his initials on them. (and shit that stinks!) Please.

I went out and bought the latest addition to my sg, "Screaming Life/Fopp".
Am I wrong or is that a picture (with out of focus head) of Kim without a
shirt?!?!? I know this is a rather dimwitted thing to be asking, but I've
never seen him in such a lack of shirt as this. I've listened to it once,
and they sound great! Chris' voice is so ripe, like it's still in the
deepening phase of adolescence. One of the songs (can't remember which)
intro threw me back to Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead". It's down pat!

Thanks for reading,

Hello.

You guys crack me up. Some of you are just so caring and sensitive! "Ben
needs to manage his anger." Okee Dokee there Doc! "He needs therapy."
RIGHT!
I think anyone whose posts consist more than 80% of the digest needs
therapy... you know who I'm talking about.
Just because someone is in the limelight doesn't give everyone else the
right to jump in and criticize their personality. Are y'all (BTW this is
the real spelling, I was born and have lived in Virginia all my life)
gonna tell me that Sid should have explored his feminine side? Give me a
big fat break. He's an artist and an entertainer, part of his bag is an
image.
Let's just take all the blackness out of rockandroll and just have piles
of white bread and american cheese on the stage! NO, lets get the
Osmonds back into the groove... and the Partrige Family Conventions... no
more tattoos or drugs or sex or violence...
Atleast you folks are talking about Ben.
There would be no SOundgarden as you know it without him. They would be
nowhere without Ben. I can't believe that just two weeks ago I was
seeking anyone even interested in Ben Shepherd and noone said anything.
Then Caryn gets kicked in the head (can you believe that? In the middle
of the mosh pit and she gets booted in the head?! How rare!) and the
whole board lights up. Why don't all of you put it into perspective and
realize the man is presenting not only music, but an act for all you
losers who buy into it.
If I was making loads of money and was up in front of thousands of people
and some jerkoff didn't tune my bass right, I'd kick his ass too. Anyone
who's played guitar for a week can tune. This guy was a professional.
He made Ben look like an ass: it's not that hard to tune a bass.
Besides, how do we know that the guy didn't screw up other stuff.

what do you have to say to that?

>weekend! see ya on the flipside....ciao....deb

I wrote the earlier post about grunge being changed into a style of
dress by the fashion industry.
A reviewer asked Kim Thayil once if grunge was dead, and Kim responded
by saying that he didn't know if it was ever alive. But, in reality it was
. The "Seattle sound" was a very real thing.
If you listen to the early Sub Pop records, like Soundgarden's
Screaming Life, Green River's Dry As A Bone, and Nirvana's Bleach, you can
hear the similarities between the bands. They weren't quite metal and they
weren't quite punk either. As the bands evolved, and Green River split to
form Mudhoney and Pearl Jam, the sound developed further into a specific
genre of rock music.
The evolution of grunge was quite natural, since Seattle was so
isolated from other major population centers. Both Heavy Metal and Punk
music filtered into the Pacific Northwest, but it also changed as it
appeared. The philosophies of both genres, which were based on a lot of
musical conservatism and hatred of each other's musical styles, never
arrived in Seattle, so the new bands combined Metal and Punk without qualms
.
So, over time, grunge appeared. It is a form of rock music which
combines the minimalist tendencies of punk with the work ethic of metal,
and intelligent thoughtful lyrics, while introducing alternate tunings (
such as the Melvins' "Dropped-D") and purposefully using "accidental"
sounds like feedback in melodic forms.
Here's my list of grunge rock bands, first Seattle, then others:

1.) Soundgarden
2.) Nirvana
3.) Alice In Chains
4.) Pearl Jam (Although, they seem to be moving away from grunge.)
5.) Screaming Trees
6.) Mudhoney
7.) The Melvins (Not officially from Seattle but the nearby town of
Aberdeen.)
8.) Green River (Now disbanded.)
9.) Foo Fighters

Other grunge bands:

9.) Candlebox (Although this one is arguable.)
10.) Bush
11.) Silverchair
12.) Girls Against Boys

Well, that's all I can think of at the moment. Please direct comments
to the list. I'd love to discuss this with you guys, but let's keep our
comments to an intellectual basis, please. I'm sure that no one here would

After SU came out Details magazine did an interview with pictures(the whole

find it in this "filled to the brim" house of mine. But Sondgarden has been
in Details magazine before. What I find interesting is Chris as a

beach!! It all seems so strange. But he must have agreed to do it for some
reason. Maybe he got new clothes out of the deal or something! I would like
to see more interviews with all of them. Does that not happen because the
others(Kim, Matt, and Ben) don't want to do it?? Or are they just not
asked?? toni

Subject: And Yet *Another* Chicago Review...

I know, I know, enough already on the Chicago Sommsfest. But I got
home Monday evening still reeling from the high of the weekend only to
be brought *way* down by someone. So, I felt the need to share more of
my joy so as not to lessen the most incredibly awesome experiences of
my entire life.

Before I babble, I want to thank Kathie for "knocking on the door" of
Silver Management for us. And to Erin and Susan, for not only opening
that door, but inviting us into the whole incredible scene known as SG
and SM. Thank you Erin, you are *the* best and made us all feel so
great and special. You truly went above and beyond our wildest
expectations for what might happen. Thank you, thank you, and those
words don t even come close to how much this all meant to us. And of
course, to the man himself, Seth. What a thrill to meet you. Thanks
for creating the Unofficial page, the mailing list and giving us all
the place to come together for SG. I'm thrilled for your experiences
as well and am *dying* to hear more!!

As you already know, all of the Sommsters are totally cool. The
meeting at Moody s was a lot of fun. And Toni, fantastic job on the
introductions!!! I ve found there s never enough time or opportunity
to talk to everyone sufficiently when a crowd like that has gathered
(*especially* a Sommster crowd). I m sorry to those of you that I did
not get the chance to get to know better (for I feel like I know all of
you somewhat from your posts) You are *all* great people!!!

Now to the Aragon...getting our backstage passes (we re *so* special)
and going through the venue, each step making me a bit more nervous and
bringing us closer to the band, WOW! Yeah, wow, because words are too
hard to find to describe all the feelings. Before my trip, I hadn't
had much of a chance to get real excited or nervous about it. Only
when we were waiting to be led backstage to their dressing room did it
sink in. I am going to meet the band!!! Totally dry mouth and lump in
my throat, ugh! The first group disappeared backstage and it felt like
an eternity for them to reemerge. Now it was our turn (Seth, Andrea,
Aaron, Vikki, Ben-Jammin, Biff, Medium Joe, Gonzo, Joe Pizano, myself
and others(?) that I m missing). Being led back was like walking on a
cloud, there but not really there. Going through winding hallways in a
smoky haze, upstairs and into the dressing room. On the walk in, Erin
is reminding us that we are going into their personal space and to be
very respectful of that, that this isn't something they normally do and
we re very lucky. I think we were all *so* respectful that we looked
depressed when we walked in because Ben said something to the effect of
"Why the somber faces, this is supposed to be a happy time." That
really broke the ice for me, and I believe everyone else. Then I think
Chris asked if we had things to be signed. So we're all shuffling
around and I shook Chris's hand and introduced myself. As the others
have said, when he looks at you with those eyes, directly into your
eyes and is listening to you...there are no words. He was very nice,
very friendly, very accommodating, very tall (to me) and yes, VERY good
looking. I told him I was from Olympia and he said cool and wrote
Thanx Bonnie and signed his name. He even asked me if it was "ie."
Yes, it's "ie." I think he said thanks or something else, it s that
fog thing again. Kim was next and very quick. I mentioned to him I
was from Oly as well (he lived here and attended the Evergreen State
College for a time) and he just gave me this great big cute smile, what
a cutie! Then on to Matt. He asked if I had a pen and I didn t so we
were both fumbling for one and I have no idea how we came up with one.
He was very nice and seemed really into the whole scene. I think I
told him I was at the Hater show. My experience with Ben was a good
one. He seemed to be in a great mood. He first asked me if I had a
light for his cigarette and I didn't. Then he signed his name and I
mentioned that I had met him outside the OK on Halloween. He said, "Oh
yeah, outside by the van?" and I said yes. He goes "Yeah, I was
waiting for the ferry to go home." Cool! <I hear later that *someone*
also mentioned to Ben that I was the girl passed out on the stage at
the Hater show and Ben goes, "Oh yeah, I remember her!" My eternal
thanks to Thuggy, for making me infamous, even though I *was* just
resting!> Then I rush over to Ben Timberlake (first and last name
*must* go together <this was before he became known as Ben-Jammin,
which is a great nickname!>) and ask him for his lighter and promptly
go over and light Ben's cigarette. (sorry Ben Timberlake, I just *had*
to do it, manymany thanks for the use of your lighter!). That was some
damn quick thinking on my part, I can t believe it! I also remember
standing around Ben and Matt with Aaron and Andrea and they were asking
if we were all at the Hater show and it was like, "Yep, I was there,
Yep, I was there, Yep, I was there." After that we asked if we could
take pictures and Chris said it was cool, so we snapped away. Chris
was so pleasant and agreeable, just standing there looking incredibly
great and at ease, letting us barrage him with flashes. I also tried
to get as many pics of the others in the room (a few of Matt and Seth,
a great one of Erin, but most of them seemed to be focused on Chris, go
figure...) Then I asked Chris if I could have my picture taken with
him and he said sure. So Andrea took our pic. I *so* much wanted to
put my arm around him for the photo, which is a natural instinct, but
something told me not to do it, be respectful. But I did try to stand
so very close to him and he leaned his and head and body down toward
mine. Then I took one of Andrea and Chris. For some reason someone
had given Chris a disposable camera and he asked how it worked. It
*just* so happened that I knew the answer and I ever so willingly
showed him how it worked. Me: "You push this button over and hold it
and wait for the light to flash here, which means it's ready." CC:
"You mean just hold this button here" (yes) "and the light comes on
here?" (Yep, that's it.) I gave Chris a photography lesson! ;-)
Soon after, it was time to go, so we said our thank yous and out the
door we went. No concept of time while we were in there. Then back
out the hallway (past that cutie Ted, the drum tech) and Erin leads us
upstairs to the VIP balcony. Great view and, as you've heard, the show
was incredible. They were all playing great and in fantastic moods.
Chris talking quite a bit between songs. I had a good seat and was
able to fully take in all aspects of the show. I had my binocs and
could see the smiles and facial expressions perfectly. They did a
bunch of bantering back and forth with each other. I was laughing
along with it, being caught up in their fun. I thoroughly enjoyed that
show and thought it was the best I d seen to date (I saw them twice in
94, at the Showbox, and the Gorge Lolla).

The anticipation for the second night was a little subdued at first,
but I'm *always* ready to see a SG show. We got to go back up to the
VIP balcony, where I chose to stand this time. Then I find out Erin is
taking those of us who did not get to go onstage the first night
one-by-one onstage. Ugh, there go those nerves again! I mean, I was
excited to see another show, but it didn't seem like anything more
could top off the events of the night before. WRONG! Erin led me up
the ramp on stage during Rusty Cage (according to Seth s set list).
After the song ended, the rest of the band cleared the stage and this
was when Chris said he wanted to dedicate the next song (at this time
Erin is pointing at me saying "This is for you!!!"). So when I heard
him say "to the Sommsters...etc" I was going nuts!!!!! I guess he
threw out the shirts and then went into BHS. Man, I was just blown
away and mesmerized that he actually remembered and recognized us in
that way. Aptly put, no longer will I head BHS in the same way again.
After Chris finished the song the rest of the band came back on stage
and ripped into Outshined, which was awesome. I also checked out Matt
drumming. He s nothing short of amazing. About half way through, Erin
told me it was time to go. Man, it was just too much to be onstage
while SG is playing, let alone while Chris dedicated a song to US!!!!!

Back up to the balcony and just totally got into the rest of the show.
There was no way *not* to be immersed and involved. It was *SO*
amazing !!!! You've heard it from the others, but it fucking kicked
ass. They had such intense energy and put it into their playing and
Chris into his singing and whole performance. The first night I
thought was fabulous, but this show was stupendous, whatever damn word
that sums up *the* best Soundgarden show I ve ever seen and can only
hope to see again. We ll see how they do for the two Seattle shows in
December. Once again, anxiously awaiting those dates and my chance to
see them again!!

I m so glad I had the opportunity to share this whole experience in the
presence of my fellow Sommsters. It would not have been the same
without them. I have so few people in my life who can understand what
all this means to me, and to be with people who ALL felt the same was
complete and liberating in a way. It s so hard to be at home and have
my pictures, guest passes and autographs and maybe have one or two
people who get what it all means to me. Oh well, I have you guys, and
Chris will be staring at me all day long from my monitor! Ahhhhh, life
*can* be good

More thanks go out to Toni and Rita. I keep saying it, but you guys
are the best. To let us invade your home and do it so graciously,
thank you!!!!! Meeting everyone was great. Now I can put faces with
names and all that.

If you made it this far, thanks for enduring my message. I needed to
recount this for myself and those of you who are still interested in
hearing about it. Sorry to those of you who are sick of these, but it
is SG and I ve always enjoyed reading what others had to say about
meeting the band and their performances.

Subject: Stuck Between The Music and The Lyrics

i must admit, i don't let the lyrics of any song influence whether or
not i like it.
i am a music lover, i play in an acoustic band (guitar), and in a
concert band (bass clarinet). i love all types of music, such as jazz,
blues, rock, classical, etc......
it is for this reason that i hold the MUSIC so high. to me, it is all
that matters.
for example, if a song has awe-inspiring music, but bad lyrics, i will
still like it. however, i don't feel the same way about a song with
thought-provoking lyrics and no music to back it up.

Jim Morrison was a great poet, but i listen to the Doors because of the
music.
Same goes for Jimi Hendrix.

Sometimes, the lyrics of a song give me a chill (ie: "Alive")
Sometimes, the lyrics get my hyped up (ie: "Ty Cobb")

But I listen to the music and the vocals as they intertwine.....

I'm not here to come down on anyone who likes to listen and interpret
lyrics or anything. It's just that I do that too much in my Canadian
Lit. class, and I don't want music to be like school......

My conclusion:
Music has shaped my life, not lyrics.

oh yeah,
One thing pisses me off: why are there so many bands with bad music and
lyrics (ie: Oasis, Crash Test Dummies)?????????????

i'll tell you all why i think Ben is so cool:

He's a big moterfinger, doing whatever the hell he wants because he's
pretty much in charge (when he's on stage).

my apology:
hey, i'm a guy.
sometimes i like that kind of stuff. i can't help it.

another, less testosterone-driven reason:

- -he's a great songwriter.
- ----------------------------
I totally dig that little riff in BIMH after the line: "would you cry
for me..." and "would you lie for me", etc... wow. i saw shades of
Hater. And the other Ben-written songs, they truly are awesome (i hate
that word)
anyways,
I love seeing Ben's influence in the band coming to the forefront.

that's all.

Subject: BUTOW single is here!!

ok, peoples, I've got the BUTOW single!!
the one with the two live tracks Gun and Get on the Snake +
A Splice of Space Jam. The last one is, as some correctly mentioned,
taken from the same session as Jerry Garcia's finger and like that song,
this one's insturmental.
The strangest thing about this single, is the cover. I was expecting either
a group shot, or something connected to the video.
So guess what's on the cover?..............a huge tomato with a
green caterpillar crawling in. The background is just plain white. This
photo seems to me so un-SGesque, that I nearly missed it in the store.
I have a huge headache right now, and I can't really think, so I have yet to
figure out the connection between this cover shot, the video and the BUTOW
lyrics.
And on the inside, there's a photo of the tomato again, only this time, there
are several caterpillars seemingly attacking the poor thing.
BTW the live tracks were recorded at the Whiskey, LA (1990)

that's all for now

hmm, you say later that the two live tracks are from the Whiskey in
1990, right? are these the same tracks on the Louder than Live promo
CD? anyone know?

>So guess what's on the cover?..............a huge tomato with a

um...the world is a tomato gone rotten with the pollution of us
caterpillars, and that's what the song is about in a round-about way,
only not using those two symbols in the song (obviously).

>And on the inside, there's a photo of the tomato again, only this

>are several caterpillars seemingly attacking the poor thing.
>BTW the live tracks were recorded at the Whiskey, LA (1990)

yep, same thing as i said before... the world's population (the
caterpillars) are destroying the world itself (aka: the tomato) by
eating it up (pollution). well, at least that's what *i* get from it..
. anyone else have any ideas?
i think it's just another of those clever little confusing SG things
that they do so well...

what happened to the Moby remix of Dusty? wasn't that supposed to be
the b-side for BUTOW? or are there two versions like PN and BIMH?

Beware of scams on Soundgarden and Alice in Chains fan club members!

I have been a Soundgarden and Alice in Chains fan club member for over
three years, ever since I knew the fan clubs existed. I look forward to
their joint mailings and am a member of their e-mail lists.

I am just back from the Soundgarden show --which I did not get to see--
which is taking place at the sold out Roseland Theater here in New York
City on Friday November 15th. The line up is Tenderloin, Rocket from the
Crypt, and Soundgarden.

I thought I was really lucky when the fan club said (thorough their e-mail
list) that they had a few tickets only for fan club members to some of the
sold out shows on the current tour (I was out of the country when they went
on sale to the public). Chrissy at the fan club was really nice, after I
sent in my e-mail request, and then confirmed by phone, she said that since
I was a fan club member my name was now on a list at the box office at
Roseland holding two tickets for me and all I had to so was show up between
noon and 11PM the day of the show (today) and present a picture ID and pay
the face value of the tickets in cash and they were mine.

Since I was a little paranoid (I had a friend coming in from outside of
Manhattan) I went by the Roseland box office at noon today (had to take an
hour off from work), but the person in the box office said the tickets were
not yet there, and would not arrive until 7PM (the doors open at 6:45PM
they said). So I went back to work a little annoyed, and just to make sure
everything was OK, I called up the Roseland box office a little later and
told them I had fan club tickets on reserve and did I need to be there by a
certain time to get them. The person said they honor reserved tickets until
9:00PM, and the tentative line up was Tenderloin at 7:00PM, Rocket at
8:15PM, and Soundgarden at 9:30PM.

So me and my friend showed up at 7:50 (I don't give a shit about
Tenderloin) and were really glad we had tickets held for us, because the
scalpers were asking $80.00 for a $20 ticket.

When we got to the box office, the nervous person behind the window said
that the "fan club" tickets were no longer honored and that we should have
been there an hour before the doors opened (5:45PM) if we wanted a crack at
the fan club tickets. They said the concert was sold out (we knew this) and
there was no chance of getting in, then the security guards made us leave
since we didn't have tickets.

This was complete bullshit!

Obviously the Roseland box office doesn't give a shit about honoring the
Soundgarden Fan Club organizers requests. I am sure the box office
employees took the tickets and sold them to the scalpers (once they heard
what the price on the street was) and then just told people without prepaid
tickets to fuck off!!

I am sure this is not the fault of the Fan Club people (e.g. Chrissy) since
you cannot do shit from Seattle to conniving people in New York. I post
this simply as a warning to other fans out there never to assume that a
venue or even a single employee in the box office (with a sold out show and
$80.00 scalper tickets) is going to honor a reserved ticket if they can
make a few lousy dollars for themselves instead.

Yup....and for those who are *lucky* to not have heard this before,
depressed people often refer to the depression as "the black hole"
and there has been some literature written about the contrast between
the black hole and the sun.

Not to burst anyone's bubble who thought it was about other things
(like promiscuity), but I have always related to this song as a song
about major depression - a topic not foreign to CC.

ok....
I just got home from SG's first of three shows in NYC @ the Roseland
ballroom....it was great.......I knew most of the set list before hand from
reading most of your experiences in Chicago.....but there were a few changes
in the set list.....Never the Machine Forever (1st encore before
JCP)....&..(cover)..Search & Destroy....which I believe is old Iggy Pop....

highlights.....Helter Skelter with a Chris adding some lines of the
Everyone's Got Something To Hide Except Me & My Monkee...into Boot
Camp....this was truly a moment

also......Black Hole Sun into Outshined......Blow up (great video before song
with SG feedback)...Slaves & Bulldozers (great jam)....Rusty Cage......I
pretty much could talk about every song but most of you saw it already and
fully understand

the band......seemed to be in decent spirits...although...Chris had a moment
when he pointed to the VIP section at Roseland (which is another stage on the
side of the club where VIPS?? are elevated from the true fans on the floor)
and said something about someone from Rolling Stone Magazine ( i think it was
Rolling Stone).....pointed him out pretty much and said that he was an
asshole who will print anything (or something like that)....and that we
should have better things to do with our cash the spend it on that shit
magazine,,,,,I didn't catch everything he was saying word for word,,,,,but
Chris seemed pretty pissed about something.,.....he also lashed out at the
"union" crew because of an annoying hiss that was coming out of the guitar
amps......Chris got pretty creative with this story too....(something about
someone "shooting tiny daggers at him".........i don't know)

Ben...was his usual self......didn't seem like he wanted to be there and he
seemed to be telling some audience members to fuck off.......?

what should not be lost however was that it was a great show.........they did
not dissapoint....I personally would have liked to hear a few older songs but
I understand that that era has passed for the band.......going again Sunday
night....I can't wait.......later...........HEAD INJURY

Even though I haven't heard these tracks, its probably pretty safe to
say "yes." What I don't get is why they are recycling old b-sides. Why
don't they release "Everybodies Got Something..." and "Thank You
Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again" officially?!?!!

well, according to the little sticker on the cover of the single, the three
tracks were previously unreleased; but maybe they're just talking about
the 'official releases', b/c the live tracks *are* in fact the same as the
LTLive ones.

There are two versions; I think the one I got is part 1of the two-part
box-set. The other version has only one b-side (Dusty remix).
