Subject: To clear up some things...
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

In my adventure this weekend I found out the answers to a couple of
questions that have popped up on the list recently:

1. The DOTU cover - the order of the band members on the DOTU cover,
from left to right, is Kim, Chris, Ben, and Matt.

2. Walpurgis Night Music - When Matt was reading the scene in Faust
where the witches sing to bless (?) the harvest, he just thought the
name "Walpurgis Night Music" just "seemed appropriate at the time."

Well, First of all "Hail,Hail the lucky ones" that were in attendence
for SOMMSFEST 96. I am very happy you all had a great time, but I am
unhappy that plane fare is a little too rich for my undergraduate blood.
I am interested in a more detailed report of Backstage Ben. He
fascinates me because I just can't figure him out.

Second, To whoever it was that doesn't understand why Soundgarden isn't
some of the list members favorite band: Get a clue shithead! I think I
speak for most people by saying that this whole thing is about music,
not some juvinile practice of declaring such and such band your favorite
and another band second favorite. I think most of us listen to many
different bands playing different kinds of music. And the fact that we
like it is good enough for us. Please guys correct me if I am wrong.
Remember that it is all "words and music" and that we all share the
common ground of Soundgarden Fans and last time I checked, that was a
very warm inclusive group.

Subject: Chicago rocks!!!

After 7 years of being a Soundgarden fan, this was absolutely worth the
wait!! Ill try not to repeat what every one else has already said so
here goes.

I have never posted much so I knew that most of the people had no idea
who I was, but everyone was so nice and friendly!! All the hugs and
screams and huge smiles! Ive never seen so many happy, excited people
in my life!! And the way we all yelled when Erin introduced Seth was
one of the best moments.

About meeting the band... Seeing them materialize in the doorway,
coming toward us was so surreal ...like a poster come to life! Like
everyone said, Kim just kind of went through and signed our stuff and
left. When he came up to me to sign my BiMH poster. He was fumbling to
try find something to place it on to sign it and I grabbed it and put it
on my chest for him to sign. Then I immediately thought that I hope he
didnt think I was just trying to get him to touch my chest or
something. I was so nervous and shaky, all I could think was---I must
get his autograph!!

We were sort of standing in a line and Chris was moving down the line
signing things and talking to everyone. I am probably the most
self-conscious person in the world and terrible at hiding my
nervousness, so I was pretty much speechless. I am sure I was staring
at him with a moronic grin on my face. Eliza was next to me and I saw
her fondling his fork and I was thinking wow, thats cool. Then I
looked down and she was having him sign some notes I had made with the
BMF and UMOK logos on them that I had given to Toni as a gift. I knew
Toni had one for Kim to sign, but I didnt know anyone else had them. I
felt pretty honored. When Chris got to me I think a barely managed to
introduce myself and say thanks. He looked at me smiled, no doubt
thinking This poor, goofy, woman cant even speak! Later, just before
we left, Chris was standing in front of me and I stuck out my hand and
thanked him again so at least I got to shake his hand. I did collect
myself enough to talk to Matt, telling him that I came all the way from
Oklahoma cause they never go there. He said, no we havent been there
yet but we want to. I said yeah, well, I dont really blame you. He
said he heard there were a lot of SG fans in Oklahoma City and I said
Yes, I think there are. We dont all just like country and western you
know! He said I know. God, I thought, I hope I didnt sound like a
smart ass. Then Toni tells Matt that I have a trailer he can stay in
when they come to Oklahoma! He was really nice and I hope that someday
they do manage to get to OKC!! Matt and Chris were both really patient
and sweet. It must be bizarre to meet people who look at you as if you
had just landed from Mars!

Both show were great, but Sunday was beyond belief! I expected them to
be great, but I didn't expect a show like the one we saw Sunday!! I
could not believe the energy!! Chris and Ben were all over the
place--jumping around and kicking things! All of them seemed totally
into the music. Chris was putting everything he had into it and he
sounded terrific!

Erin and Silver Management gave us the royal treatment. After all that
and what they did for Seth, you can't say they don't care about the
fans. It went way beyond our expectations! They called us the real
fans!! I didn't think I could be any more of a fan than I already was
but I was wrong!

Floating on cloud nine,
Candy

Yes, I now like those high screams! He can certainly hit high notes better

interference - so the listener can close their eyes and concentrate on those
beautiful vocals)

I hope I don't offend anyone, but I think Chris Cornell looks like a woman
with long hair. The short hair goes much better. As to vocals, it doesn't
really matter. The high pitch goes well with the hard and fast songs, while
the lower pitch goes well with the slower, deeper songs. It all depends on
what he's singing. Well, that's just my opinion.

Ever hear of an opinion? I for one don't like Ultra_OK, and probably never
will, but LTL is great. And no I don't care to know why you like one better
then the others cause it still won't influence my opinion. As for only
playing one song, well they have 4 albums after LTL was released so of
course they are going to play the newer stuff, and most of it from DOTU
cause it is brand new and where the band are currently at, I bet if you went
to a show 5 years ago you would hear all LTL, why? cause that was where the
band was at. And that is what the punters want to hear. I haven't heard DOTU
live yet, so that is what I want to hear this time around! :)

Hi list!

question:
I'm from switzerland and I'm travelling to the states next week. I'll be
for two weeks in San Franzisco (Nov. 22th until December 7th) and then
until December 28th in New York. Could everyone mail my some adresses in
this two cities where I can get some cool soundgarden-stuff. For example
I'm searching for a long time now a bootleg with the +waiting for the
sun;-cover. It would be also great to meet one of you sommsters. And
btw, you're allways talking about this sommsters-t-shirts, and everyone
seems to really love it. I want one too! So, I would like to have the
e-mail adress of the one who sells them.
I hope to get some mail (m.perricone@swix.ch). But first I hope, that
this one will be on the list.

Kim did talk to us!!!! No it wasn't an hour long discussion because the
band was getting ready to go on and there were other demands on their time.
But when we enter the room to meet them Kim was the first one to walk up
to me and flash the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. Even after I
grabbed his arm and told him he was walking off with my pen he again flash
that smile at me. Then a few min. later I was treated to a third smile
when he searched me out and gave me back the cap of the silly pen.
Needless to say I kept thinking "OH God, I meet Kim and all I could do was
accuse him of taking my pen".. But later when I had my turn on the stage
Kim walked over to that side and when he saw me (yes I'm going to be
obsessed and think he was looking at me and me alone :-) ) - HE STOPPED
PLAYING AND GAVE ME A DOUBLE HAND WAVE AND A SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR....

Kim is absolutely gorgeous. He has the most unbelievable eyes and that
smile that makes you go weak in the knees.

Your friends better get a check on that attitude.. I really feel the bands
that survive the fan love thing are the one that are out there to give the
fans that feeling. My feelings for Soundgarden just reached a level that
could only be reached because of the way we SOMMs members were treated in
Chicago. We were given so much attention from Silver Management, the band,
and the most incredible lady "Erin". Never once did I feel they were doing
it for any other reason then to please us. We were offered refreshments we
were given opportunities to do things I would only dream I could do. We
were treated with respect. Each time I encounter a band member the smile
they gave me was real nothing put on. They knew that we appreciate the
wonderful music they give us and that appreciation is part of their reward
for making the music.

Everyone knows that PR is a must for any type business.....but Soundgarden
and company go beyond that.

Subject: My Kind of Town!

ALL green-eyed, sick of Chicago posts readers .....STOP NOW!!! It's my turn
to babble!!! First off, I'd like to thank the Academy.......no wait that's
not right. I'd like to thank Erin of Silver Management<bowing down before
her action> She went above and beyond her job. She truly wanted to make us
have an memorable experience....and by God she succeeded!!! Also to Kathie
for writing an exordinary letter and getting this all together. Seth for
being the reason any of this happen by deciding to make the best Web Page on
the net and an even cooler mailing list. And to Soundgarden....the best band
in the Universe!!
There is a sub plot to all of this and that was Sommsfest Slumber Party!!
It went on all weekend at my house! 7 SIS's(Sisters in Soundgarden) all got
together to meet, do a little female bonding, worship Soundgarden and mess
up toni and Rita's house!! It was a great experience!! And it added to the
overall greatness of the weekend. So I'd like to thank: Andrea, Bonnie,
Candy,Oh what's her name DeeDee and Jamie for being gracious guests and soul
mates!! And to Rita for...well she knows! It was Fun...although my car tires
are a little flater!!! OK, I don't want to
make this too long so I will give the highlights!
Saturday: Moody's was great!!! And when Erin walked in and said"this is
Seth".... you would of thought a movie star walked in. Aaron is right
...Seth had woman all over him<looking intently at my screen to see Seth
blushing> We took pictures in the Pub but we will probably look like ghosts
it was so dark in there! Meeting the band was frightening and exhilarating
at the same time. I said my bit on Kim. Matt was nice and called us "true
fans" I talked to Chris the most. I shook his hand(I guess that counts for
touching him Deb and Christy) and he held the Loud Love 12" cover(which is
what I wanted him to sign) checking it out. He said "I haven't seen this is
a long time" I said:" do you still like it?" He said,"Yeah, this cool
guy(alligator monster looking kind of guy ) is from a movie." I said "Yeah a
bad B movie and when I took down all my Godzilla and monster movie posters
in my bathroom to put up my soundgarden collection He is a good transition."
Chris said; "SG posters in your bathroom? That's pretty weird" And I said,
"yep and I get naked in front of them...that's what's scary!!!" Now that
thought send him scurrying away. I'm sort of glad Ben didn't come out since
medium Joe made me all paranoid about Ben getting mad that I brought
something for him to sign that he didn't even play on. I never expected to
get to talk to them like we did and take pictures!! I hope everyone's pix
turns out ....mine are going to the 1 hour place today!!!
I won't give an review of the concert here....I'll do that on the page.
But I will say, going up to watch the Rusty Cage and BHS from the side of
the stage was just amazing!!!! Erin just tapped me on the shoulder and
motioned for me to come with her. I had no idea where we were going. When we
got to the ramp that led up there I just stopped dead in my tracks. She
grabbed my hand and pulled me up there I was dumbfounded and I know I stood
there with this glazed look in my eyes and a big dumb smile on my face!!
They were right there!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Erin!
Sunday: Took the SIS's for a car ride to see the "BIG BUILDINS" and stop
at Reckless Records(be glad you weren't down there shopping Ben T these
women would of bowled anyone right over to get to the S section!!!) Everyone
got something...better souvenir than a damn Chicago coffee mug!!!
We were all very low keyed. A topic of converstation was no way can tonight
compete with Saturday night. It will be anticlimactic! Well shut my mouth
sister....Soundgarden proved us wrong!!! Erin once again got us in the
balcony above the fray! we sort of took over the end of the balcony at some
point. They came on and it was the most intense and best show I have seen
yet this year(and this is the 4th time I've seen them in 96) Seth mentioned
some highlights but he forgot Chris doing pelvic thrust at one point...yes,
ladies I said pelvic thrust!!!! And he did take his shirt off unlike
Saturday night. When Chris made the dedication to Somms....I think we all
misunderstood. I think he thought it was Pomfest. The Pomeranian dog
fest!!!! Making points with his wife!!! <nudging myself in the ribs since no
one is here> Anyway, when he said the dedication the poor people in front of
us just about jumped out of their seats when the scream went up!! That was
it!!!! We were out of control and loving every minute. The Somms Mom was a
dancing fool!!! Hell, we all were hot wet sweaty messes by the end of the
show. It was fantastic!! Seth also forgot to mention the group hug(sorry to
the people who have met other sommsters and it didn't work out this was a
love fest) We left the Aragon as excited and pumped up as one can be without
suffering a heart attack!(the only damper was the fact that Andri and Dave
missed out...I'm sorry I wish we could of found you guys! If you talked to
the woman at the door I know what kind of treatment you got she was not
pleasant!!! The lady at the box office window should of had your
names..they were on the list we gave to Erin) Several of us stood out in the
cold by our cars next to the el and talked and took forever to say good-bye!!
Not only were the concerts and meeting the band fantastic!! The whole
experience of meeting all the other sommsters was the best. We are all
ages, colors, sizes and opinions but we all have one thing in commom...our
love of Soundgarden...and it is so much more fun when you share it with
others!! So to Jamie, Candy, Bonnie, Andrea, Rita, DeeDee, Eliza, Medium
Joe, Ben, Monnica, John, Aaron, Biff, Gonzo,Vikki,Kate,Lauren(the only
fan..God girl you must of been nervous), Kathie, Dave and Seth(the man can
keep a secret) thanks for making this weekend one of the best I ever
had!!!!!!! toni

He can certainly hit high notes better than any other male singer I've ever heard in my entire life.

There is nothing (to me) more moving than to hear a guy sing really low, and deep...............my favourite of all SG songs would have to be the low part of "Slaves & Bulldozers", where he sings (with very little musical interference - so the listener can close their eyes and concentrate on those beautiful vocals)

I love the deep voice. Especially when listening to him sing while

This is the only response you are going to get out of me EVER for this
topic, so don't bother responding to this. Okie?

When I asked why that person was on the list, even though SG was not
their favorite band, I didn't have any hostility behind the words. I was
simply curious as to why they would want to recieve so much email if Soundgarden
wasn't their favorite band.
It's amazing how many of you people who responded to the post have
potty-mouths. I counted 57 uses of "fuck" in one message. What do you do?
Sit around all day trying to find new uses of the word?
Aim your indignace at someone else, not a fellow SG fan. I'm here to
talk about Soundgarden (which MOST of us have been doing), not to trade
insults with a bunch of people I don't even know.
If I wanted to argue with someone, I'd go talk to my mom. :)

I will be erasing all responses to this, so don't bother sending any.
I apologize to the other list members, for the inconvenience of having

well, i think SWMGEC is a really good opener, see Motorvision. Of course,
on the '94 tour in the states, they opened w/ JCP.

but to end, something fast and furios. When i saw them at lolla, they
closed w/ "no attention".. and it was so fucking awesome.
"Full on kev's mom" would probably go off well too. But, again
remembering back to Motorvision, "Slaves & Bulldozers" was awesome as well.

They have a pretty typical sound of all those old old sub pop bands,
just like a "we're so cool we don't care if we sound like shit" sound. i
don't really think they are all that wonderful, mark arm is actually pretty
annoying on most of the songs (not that he isn't annoying when he sings in
mudhoney. :) Soundgarden is really one of the only bands that i like from
that era, but i still think that their newer stuff from Badmotorfinger on
blows that all away. Hmm...maybe it's because Ben joined...:)

Subject: Chicago was AWESOME

Hi fellow sommsters!

I'm finally back at the old salt-mine after one of the most incredible
weekends of my life! I'm sure you guys have already heard so much about
this whole experience that you'd like to strangle us but, I just wanted to
throw in my two cents. I'll try to keep it short tho.

First, I had a great time at Moody's. It was really cool to meet everyone.
I have to admit I was a little nervous about the meeting - - so many new
faces at one time can be a little overwhelming for shy girls like me :-)
But everyone was really nice and we all talked and laughed, had a great
time and basically took over the pub. (Hey did they let you guys back in on
Sunday?)

Fast forward - - the meeting

I spent like the last week thinking of what I would say to them when I met
them, you know I didn't want to say something really stupid and annoying,
but once I was actually there, I was so awestruck, all I could manage was
"Hi I'm Monnica!" and "Thank you". But I'm sure I had a really stupid
glazed look in my eye the whole time.
I got a pretty decent picture of Matt and I thought I got a good one of
Chris too but as it turns out, I only got his right ear but I did get a
really nice shot of Dee Dee's hair <laughing> so I'm no award winning
photographer folks. Kim disappeared pretty quickly so I didn't get his pic.

Fast forward - - a little crisis

After the second group was done, Erin came out to get the rest of us to take
up to the balcony area. We were on our way when the Security Meanie stopped
me. Somehow during the excitement of the meeting, I lost my guest pass. He
wasn't going to let me threw. But thank god my fellow sommsters came
through for me and told Erin (Thanks again you guys! I would have been
downstairs crying my eyes out.) and she came back down and got me. I
thought she'd be a little pissed because of the inconvenience it probably
caused her to go get me another pass but she was *really* nice about it.
 She was such a sweetheart!

While I was waiting on her to bring me another pass, Kim stepped through the
door of the balcony from the backstage area. He was only there briefly, I
think maybe he came out to say hello to someone or something ( I tried not
to stare),but he was just like 15-20 feet away! I also saw Matt and Chris
watching Rocket. (I thought Rocket was a little quirky but some of their
songs were pretty cool.)

Fast forward again - - Soundgarden take the stage

What can I say that hasn't already been said. They were incredible! And
Chris talked to the crowd a lot more than I'd heard him do in the past.
Towards the end, Erin came over to me and said can you come downstairs for
a second. I had no idea what was up but I followed and what d'ya'know, I
wound up down at the side of the stage. I got to stay for "Slaves and
Bulldozers" very very cool. Towards the end of the song Chris gradually sat
down on the floor, while playing mind you and I was right there! This was
nothing short of AWESOME. Oh yea, I think I saw Susan there too. I was kind
of far away but I think she was out there working with the lighting guys.
It looked like her from a distance.

There were several points during the show when I got goosebumps. My
favorite, I think, was the part where Chris was talking about how he didn't
like pain, he liked music and hanging out with his friends . . . and then
they went into "Waiting for the Sun"/"Helter Skelter" and "Boot Camp". At
this point I was standing at the back of the balcony by a little window that
was open (Kathie's right. It really gets HOT in there.) And it was like the
music was just floating on the cool night air and I just closed my eyes and
listened.

Fast foward 5AM - - I awake

I don't know if I was in shock earlier or what but at 5am I woke up "Never
the Machine Forever" was playing in my head and it dawned on me in a major
way - I JUST MET SOUNDGARDEN LAST NIGHT! AGHHHHHHH! I may have actually
screamed, I'm sure the people in the next room appreciated it.

Sunday

I didn't catch much of the show sunday. I spent the day shopping (hey,
it's Chicago), with one of my cousins and we went to dinner so, as it turned
out, I just showed up to see part of SG. I didn't know we had passes for
upstairs again though so I ended up staying downstairs, really really far
away from the moshers but it's true, I was a *great* show.

Oh, and let me say, I think that SG fans are some of the nicest people in
the world. Thank you Eliza for the ride to the Aragon and thanks to Kathie
and Dave for seeing me safely back to my hotel. And thanks to all the other
Sommsters for making it a great weekend! You guys are the greatest!

I'll shut up now Monnica

Earlier this year, some friends of mine went to West Virginia to see
Lollapalooza. Their reason for going was to hear Metallica and witness a
live performance of the hallowed band. Soundgarden was also playing on the
bill. (alas, they are not big fans of SG). One of my friends who knew I was
a fan of SG described the show to me. He also told me that while Soundgarden
was performing, the crowd threw various foreign objects at the stage. One of
these objects (a water bottle) hit or nearly hit Ben. I was then informed
that Ben lost it and began screaming at the crowd. During the tirade he
insulted Metallica and told the crowd to fuck off. I don't blame him. I
would like anyone who went to this show to verify this. I know it was a
while back, but I am curious. To any of those who went to Chicago and met
the band, is Ben a reclusive person? Was he forward like Chris, or did he
hang back? Just wanna know...

By the way, does anyone know if SG is coming anywhere close to Richmond,
Va.? Like East coast? Just wanna know...

Subject: Chicago SOMMsfest - Part 1 (The Members)
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Well my little chickadees are you ready for another Chicago SOMMsfest
review.. Well tough your SOMMs Mom is going to give you her version. A
version seen through the eyes of someone who though this type of party was
over for her.. I was wrong because:

YOUR NEVER TO OLD TO ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!

Okay so you don't get totally bored I'm going to give you some insight into
the SOMMs members (evil grin }:->).

As most of you know my trip didn't start out great - tornadoes and a closed
airport!!! Was this a sign of how the weekend was to go??? But I got on
the plane Saturday morning and when I walked off in Chicago to the waiting
smiles of three wonderful ladies I knew it was going to be a party to
remember. First one I spotted was Toni. Toni's smile said it all. She is
filled with life and love. I felt like I had know her all my life from the
first second I saw her. She open her home to us without a hint of
reservation.

Next to Toni was a lady with the wildest red hair. Again a smile was all
that was need to know we would get on great. This was Dee Dee. Dee Dee is
crazy, plain and simple!!! She is ready to embrace everything and anything
that comes her way. What a joy to know her.. Oh and she does have the
greatest tattoo if you ever meet her make sure you ask about it.. Now the
third lady standing there to meet me reminded me at first glance of the
fine porcelain I collect. Candy has soft blond hair and lovely white skin.
She has a great laugh and doesn't mind being kidded about being an
Oklahoma hick.. It only took a second to get the picture of what a SOMMs
member is like. Friendly, good sense of humor, a deep concern for others,
a love for life and most of all a love of good music created by a great
band. Over the next few hours this picture of what a SOMMs member is would
be repeated over and over with each member I met.

But back to the story.. After hugs and smiles we were off running. I got
to tell you I saw more of the Chicago airport than I ever wanted to see.
We got to the gate where the next two members of the SOMMs Slumber party
were arriving. Bonnie and Andrea two of the Seattle group and what better
representation of Seattle. Both these ladies are intelligent, funny,
sensitive, and very attractive. If most of the people in Seattle are like
these two it has to be one great city.

After a run back through the airport (God I never want to see the WHOLE
airport again) we loaded ourselves into Toni's poor little car and we were
off to the house. Where we were introduced to the family dog and cat who
soon knew which one of us would pet and feed they under the table.. But
most of all I finally got to meet Rita. What a sweetheart of a lady. Rita
thanks for everything. It was so good of you to open your home to us and
make us all feel so relaxed and at home.

Okay after a few hours of bonding and Soundgarden talk we were off to the
restaurant to meet more members. Already there was Eliza, Aaron, Biff, and
Monnica, sure enough there it was the smile, the warmth, the SOMMs member
outline. Aaron our List Thug fits his role just great. Except he is so
sweet you wonder how he could ever hurt anyone. Biff was all worried about
being so young, but in this group age is not an issue. Monnica was quite
and friendly I kept forgetting to tell her (and I'll do it now) I really
enjoy her post - your a great writer.. Eliza - ah girlfriend we have allot
of talking to do yet.. I'll see you and Toni next week for our next night
out with Soundgarden.. So you know Eliza is very out going and everything
is set to fun mode..

We all hugged and laughed. Soon others began to arrive John and his group,
Medium Joe, Vikki, Ben and Kate. And yes they all were open friendly and I
really happy I got to meet each and everyone of them. And Vikki is a
fountain of information it was really nice to talk with her..

Then Kathie and her husband Dave came in. A round of cheers for her and a
toast was offered for her in thanks for her letter. Kathie was so nervous
she wanted this to work so much for us. The last member to get there was
Gonzo poor guy got loss in the wilds of Chicago suburbs but like a true
SOMMs trouper he pushed forward and found us. It was getting late and some
concern was voiced that what if Erin didn't come. We were sitting there
enjoying each other company when Erin walked up and introduced her self.
We all gave a small cheer and welcome her. Beside her was a tall, dark and
very handsome man. My first thought - one of the guys came with her to
make sure she wasn't walking into a group of crazed fans. But she waited
only a second for our cheering to stop and very simple turned and said "Oh
and this is Seth." It took a second or two before it sunk in to our
brains. But when it did we all screamed in joy.

Now I got to tell you all on the way to the restaurant I had made the
comment that of all the people on the list that I would love to meet Seth
was the most important. In ways I care just as much about Seth as
Soundgarden. I have been on this list since day one and have gone though
allot with Seth and a few others. I'm in complete amazement of his work
and to be totally honest with you I'm very proud to know him. Seth doesn't
change his expression. Seth doesn't use much body motions - its really
amazing to watch him. During most of the show on Saturday night he hardly
moved. But when I told him my name he reached out his hand and gave me the
most wonderful smile. Well I just had to go around the table and hug the
devil out of him. I'll apologize now Seth I know I'm a typical mom type
person and I just had to keep hugging you all the time - I can't help it
I'm just so proud to know you.. And yes I'm the one that drug him into a
group hug at our last meeting.

Well now I'm happy - I have met people I have written to over the last
year, I have met our leader Seth it didn't matter what happen at the
show I was content.. But as you have read in others review more was to
come.

But I'll do that in the next note..

Subject: Chicago SOMMsfest - Part 2
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Okay now part 2 of Chicago SOMMsfest. As you have all have read we were
given backstage passes. Great saver it's got the DOTU black silhouette,
the date, and is marked with M&G B which stands for Meet and Greet
Backstage. Makes you feel good to see people around you eyeing your pass.
"Yeah I'm going to meet the band backstage!!!" Now does that sound like
I'm being stuck up and star struck your right and I'll more than likely be
that way for a long, long time. Getting to this point of having the pass
was a little crazy. Thanks to Dave (Kathie husband) for always going off
to find out what was happening or where we should be. Once inside the
ballroom we met Seth, checked out the tee's (I got a long sleeved black
shirt with the BMF logo and Soundgarden on the sleeve - for my Stacy). We
then went to the area where people with passes go. Erin met us there and
broke the group into two and gave us the low down on the issues. Only rule
was be respectful of the band and others trying to do their job back stage.
This was not hard to do since everyone back there was so friendly and good
to us. I was in the first group and we went off through the maze of dark
hall ways in search of our dreams. Backstage was dark, dirty, filled with
smoke - good atmosphere. We stop short of a set of stairs with a sign
stating "Soundgarden dressing room and an arrow pointing up.. Toni got a
picture of it I hope it turned out!

We were standing there waiting when a figure moved passed me. It was like
in a dream because I couldn't believe it was Chris. But then there was Ben
and I knew this wasn't a dream I was going to soon meet Soundgarden.
Panic!!!! What do you say, how do you act!!! No more time to figure it
out because we were being told it was time to go in. We walked up the
stairs and into the door way of a room. We all stayed crowed around the
door way until a man told us to come on in. I bet we looked really silly
all standing there huddled in the door way. So I stepped forward and walk
over to the other side of the room. I turned to say something to Kathie (I
think it was Kathie - at this time my brain sort of stopped) and when I
turn back there was Kim walking up to me. GOD IS HE BEAUTIFUL.. I could
not say anything, I simple held out my hand to shake his and started into
his big bedroom eyes <<<SIGH>>>. I handed him my vinyl cover for him to
sign and told him how much I liked his music. He was really nice but when
he walked away he took my pen. All I could think of was what was I going
to have the others sign with. So I took a few step toward him took hold of
his arm and ask for my pen back. "Oh I'm sorry and more smiles" from him.
I backed up and said to myself.. "Oh shit I meet Kim and all I can say is
you took my pen".. Behind me a soft laugh I turned and there not more than
3 or 4 inches from me was Chris.

Well my brain really shut down then, but I did hand him the cover to sign.
He looked at it and wanted to know where I had gotten it. He knew it was a
limited editions. I explain that I had gotten it from Stacy who lives in
England. I then told him that I had at lease a million people who would
like to thank him. He smiled and said "Only a million". But I did thank
him for other who were not there (you know who you are).

Next was Matt he was just standing off sort of by himself. I walked over
to him and handed him the cover. Again question on where it had come from
and he even turned it over to check the number of it. "52 you did good".
After he signed it I ask him if I could have a small favor. I know we were
told to bring just one item to sign but I had something else I wanted him
to do for me. He said no problem and did it. I'm sorry I can't tell you
what it was others at the show know, but it's a Christmas gift and I don't
want him to know about it yet.. Just know that Matt did it for me and even
went a little further than I needed him to do. Thanks Matt you are a
sweetheart.

I didn't get to meet Ben (damn) but I had a close encounter with him later
so it's okay!!! We were then ushered out and taken to the area reserved
for people with passes. To be completely honest with you I don't remember
much about the music that night. I know it was loud and they did a great
job, but I was so high on meeting them and everything else that happen that
I wasn't doing a great job at listening. I kept thinking what more could
happen this was so great. Then a tap on the shoulder it was Toni "come
with me". Oh sure and give up the seat I just got. Right about now my
feet and knees had started to scream at me giving up my seat was not my
idea of a good move. But I did and I'm really happy I did. Because it was
my turn to go up on the stage.. I was there for Blow up the Outside World.
You have no idea how hard I was singing and dancing - I was the only one
but who cares this was a once in a life time thing and I was going for it.
I was standing on the right side of the stage by Ben. But during the song
Kim walked over and seeing me (yes it was me he was looking at :-P) he
stopped playing and with both hands waved at me. Did I tell you how
freaking beautiful he is.. More dancing and singing and then there he
was.. My wonderful Bad Ass Ben. I have had a thing for Ben since day one.
But Lordy, Lordy, Lordy, in person the guy is just to handsome for words.
Eye contact is made, he smiles, he blows me a kiss, I blow one back, I'm
now in total fuckin heaven. I can die with a smile on my face, life is
good..

End part two!.

Subject: Chicago SOMMsfest - Part 3 (The End)
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Oh come on now stop that groaning!

Well Saturday night ended with seven very tired but happy ladies siting
around eating pizza. We each told our personal little stories. It's great
how everyone had something happen to them that felt special. That's what
this whole weekend was special.

Sunday we sat at the breakfast table lots of coffee and good talk. I can't
tell you how great it was to be with these people. The whole time I was
planning this trip my family and friends did their best to make me think
I was losing my mind. How could I possible get into a plane, fly to
Chicago, meet people (who I met through the Internet), go to a rock concert
at my age. Had I loss my mind totally - NO!!!

By late afternoon a funny feeling came over me I wasn't so up on going to
the show. Then Toni voice her concern about how nervous she was. All of
us were feeling a bit off about this show. How could it compare with last
night.. But we got our butts up and headed off to the show. First a quick
meeting at the restaurant, then down to the hall. We find we have passes
waiting - great. Seth comes out to meet us and head up to the reserved
area for the show. This time we move down a bit so we have a great view of
the stage. The normal opening the guys come out on stage and start into
"Spoonman". But there is a new energy tonight. Something is really
different from last night. Chris is wasted but in control. He is putting
every ounce of his self into each song. His footing is not very good and
at one point he almost goes off the stage the hard way. He lays just on
the edge of the stage and the security guys are all reaching up to steady
him before he falls over the edge. With each song they get tighter and
tighter, the crowd is getting more pumped. We are singing at the top of
our lungs, dancing like crazy people. Then Chris makes his speech that
this song is dedicated to us SOMMsters. Well if we weren't crazed before
we sure were now. The people around us just stepped back and looked at us.
Member who were standing away from us came running. We were screaming we
were number one, high five's, hugs, we are now totally out of control.

Every song after that is harder and better. It's pure raw rock and roll.
Chris is beating the hell out of the microphone. Ben starts destroying the
stage. When he topples the 8 foot amps behind him we scream his name.
When the poor roadies try to set them back up. Ben see it as an animal
whose kill is being taken by another animal. He races across the stage and
jumps on top of his kill. He is the hunter (no pun intended) and he is
master of all. Bedlam is the word of the day!

The band goes off and we wait for the encore.. Wait the house lights go
on. The crowd screams "NO" and the booing starts. But not for long - it's
Chris and dear lord in heaven he has taken off his shirt . We are being
taken back to the 90s, it's so fine!!!!

JCP was not the usually long set but it was hard and perfect . The band
leaves the stage again and the SOMMs membership is going ballistic. Aaron
runs over to me we are hugging and jumping up and down. Bonnie is
screaming and jumping up and down. We are all sweaty and so damn happy
it's wonderful! I was so happy I didn't even get mad when the Chris look
alike behind me who was trying to impress his date. Tells her that
Soundgarden always ends their shows with the song - ready for this! Jesus
Chris Superstar! Idiot!!!!

But it's over we all know this and as we slowly head out we stop to say
good bye to Erin. How many times can we say THANK YOU ERIN. You were just
great.. We also must say good bye to our fearless leader Seth.. I had
warned him about a group hug and he had said oh don't do that.. But I did,
pulled him into the circle and we group hug for our wonderful Seth. We
love you big guy!!!

Out side we stand for at lease 20 min. or so trying to say all we could say
to people we don't know if we will ever see again. It's hard to part from
folks that are like long time friends. From now until Monday when we head
for the airport it's the same over and over. Hug and see ya on the list.

This was one fine weekend. The music was the best, the band was the best,
the people were and will always be my SOMMs friends.

Personally, I favor AICs Jar of Flies as my fave album of theirs (though the

Cornell penned riffs and Cameron inspired percussion. But ultimately, the
cross-pollination amongst the bands just makes it better and richer for

With hindsight, isn't it amazing that no one on the list guessed that Seth
would be at the Chicago meeting? If Silver Management were going to go to
all that trouble to arrange for sommsters to meet the band, it would have
been crazy if the guy who started it all wasn't part of it. And deservedly
so!! ( I bet Mr Cameron had a big say in that, Seth)

And I am not surprised at Silver Mangement's postive attitude to somms
either. Okay, there's bound to be a little bit of PR involved, but as
Kathie will no doubt agree, there's *nothing* wrong with PR! :-)

Anyway, just keep those Chicago posts coming!!! For those of us who
couldn't be there and who may never get to touch Chris' fork, run their
fingers through Kim's hair, lick Matt or get spat on by Ben, it's *almost*
as good as being there.

I am not offended by it, just kind of surprised. It's not really any wonder
some of Soundgarden's detractors think of them as macho, sexist pigs.

Or maybe Susan is behind it - sending us subliminal 'hands off' messages :-)

I think this may have something to do with some of the shows they did on the
Superunknown tours. There was talk that a lot of it wasn't very dynamic
(Reading 95 certainly wasn't!)The band have even acknowledged this, saying
some of the SU stuff was more difficult to play and didn't always work too
well live. But they didn't know what to to do about it.

Maybe this is their solution.

At Brixton they were certainly dynamic! And yes, I would have dearly loved
to hear Beyond the Wheel, but I wasn't disappointed at what they did play.
They were enjoying themselves and playing well and that's what matters most
(to me anyway.)

I think playing 'hits' like Outshined again reflects the fact they seem to
be coming to terms with fame and success a bit more - and maybe even
enjoying it a little! I don't think they'll ever do a Christmas album though
- - sorry Geoff :-)

Incidentally, Pearl Jam also seem to be playing all the hits this time
round. I haven't seen the Rolling Stone interview with Eddie Vedder, but
from other stuff I have read recently he seems to be chilling out a bit too.

Better a show full of hits from happy and relaxed bands than a bullet in the
head or a syringe full of heroin. Soundgarden are going to be around in some
shape or form till they - and we - are old and grey (God willing) And who
knows, Siva, on the next tour they may well start playing some of the pre
BMF stuff.

Absolutely the last post from me today (probably)

Same here. The Chigago raving is rather depressing.

Anyway, my favorite SG vid would be Black Hole Sun, aside from BUTOW, which
is rather new. JCP would probably be my favorite, but I am unfortunate to
have ever seen the video. I have only seen picture clips which probably
don't do the video justice. My least favorite vid would have to be
Spoonman--only pictures of the band members were in the video!

Oh, c'mon. Green River is very good. Sure the vocals on a few songs
get a little annoying, but for the most part their music is wonderful. I
just bought Sub Pop's re-release of Dry As A Bone/Rehab Doll and I am very
impressed.
Of course, though, I DID get mad when I saw that SubPop used a whole
bunch of colors for the insert, while Screaming Life/Fopp is in Black/White
/Yellow. What's up wid dat?
However, you do make the good point that there is a pretty unified
sound of the early Sub Pop bands, that's a little different than the new
Sub Pop bands, like Girls Against Boys. That's why the Seattle bands began
to be associated as a "Seattle sound", because of the elements of their
music that they had in common.

definatly, my brother plays that album all of the time. And I love it!!

This brings up another topic though, my brother thinks that Soundgarden
copied from Green River. He says that Like Suicide is a copy of, one last
stitch.

Every time I play Superunknown he points out how Chris sings, one last
stitch in the song.

He also points out how Chris thanks Green River, Mark Arm, and Mudhoney on
Ultramega OK.

Personally, I think he may be a little right.

But then he also tries to claim that every cool thing Kurt Cobain did was
a copy of Mark Arm so.

Well I would like to hear what you think.

I just got my photos from Chicago and I'm very pleasantly
surprised. The pictures backstage, with the exception of a few of
Chris that were ruined because he was right in front of the mirror,
came out quite decent. I didn't get any of Kim -- I guess he walked
out before I got a chance. I have some good shots of Chris, Ben, and
Matt, though, which I will scan for the Chicago SOMMSfest '96 Web page
(which will also have scans of the guest passes and my laminate on
it), hopefully tomorrow night.

Even better are the pictures I took from the pit. I would say that
there are about 36 totally decent photos, and as soon as I get
approval from the management, I will add a bunch of them to the Web
page. The graininess of the film really adds to the shots, too, which
surprised me. I was sure they would all look terrible.

I'll let everyone know if and when I get the necessary approval...

I think Mtv should either eliminate all videos with that kind of stuff

The only video with crucifiction imagery that really bothered me was
the Nine Inch Nails video where the monkey was nailed to a cross. I felt

That makes me wonder if Chris got dumped by girls a lot in high school
. :) This could be his way of getting back. :)
I hated the video for Black Hole Sun. It has absolutely nothing to do
with the song's intention: to convey the idea of the misuse of sex to
escape problems. (Well, at least, that's what I got out of it. Anyone
else got any theories on Black Hole Sun? Let's hear them.)

>I am not offended by it, just kind of surprised. It's not really any wonder
>some of Soundgarden's detractors think of them as macho, sexist pigs.
>
>Or maybe Susan is behind it - sending us subliminal 'hands off' messages

I thought it was really funny when that interviewer asked Kim why there
weren't more women in hard rock (Soundgarden isn't even hard rock!). Kim
said "Well, there are plenty of waitress positions open" just to bait her
on. :)
They obviously aren't sexist, but I think maybe a lot of people in the
media are trying to put the tag on them, just to stir things up. Jeez,
there's enough injustice out there already, without making up more!
Seriously though, does anyone think that they would have made Susan
Silver their manager if they were sexist? And don't say it was only
because she was dating Chris, because he expressed that he thought it would
be a bad idea because of their closeness. The reason they made her their
manager was because she is VERY GOOD at managing bands.
The media should go pick on Van Halen or Motley Crue or something for
sexism. Not Soundgarden.

I dunno if Rockline has any online transcripts, but I do have a copy
of the Rockline interview with a bunch of guitarists including Kim Thayil.
The interview was REALLY funny because toward the end, Kim and Jerry
Cantrell from Alice In Chains get really drunk, and Jerry pees in a bottle.
:) They also discuss the sexual merits of guitars and coconuts. :)

It makes sense that more women would drool over Chris than Kim, for
the simple fact that Chris is the frontman, and therefore the most visible
to the audience. Kim, as lead guitarist, will not move around as much,
because he is doing such complex lead lines on his axe that it's impossible
to move around much and keep playing. (I know this because I'm a lead
guitarist. My brother, the frontman, is the one who jumps around and stuff
. The most I've done is lie on my back on the ground and slide around the
floor by pushing off with my legs... Oh, and I also kicked in my speakers
at a show this summer while doing the the solo to one of our songs, but
that's all.)

One Last Stitch sounds almost nothing like Like Suicide. The only
thing both songs have in common is that their intros are done with acoustic
guitar. Chris's vocals are about a THOUSAND times better than Mark Arm's,
maybe a MILLION times better. Arm's words are too muffled and off-key,
which I find strange because he wasn't playing guitar at the same time
like Kurt Cobain did when he recorded.

Naw, Kurt was Kurt. There was only one person like him in the whole
world. Boy, was Cobain a weird little psycho! But, very cool too. :)
Personally, I think Kurt Cobain's vocals were better than Arm's. At
least you can understand Kurt. I still like Arm's vocals, because they
sound so chaotic and vicious, but they could be less muddy.

Wow, has anyone seen the December "Details" magazine. The pictures of
Chris are great, wonderful, great, sexy, great, intents, great and did I
mention greatttttttt... This is no longer a cute little boy my friends.
He is going for the older, dark and brooding look. I haven't read the
article yet to busy looking at the pictures.. :-) But on the whole I would
say Mr. Cornell is trying real hard to change his physical image and look..
The problem is the first Calvin Klein ad shows a guy who is trying real
hard to look like our Chris but he is young. I guess no matter how hard he
try's the commercial media will do it's best to keep up with his style and
appeal.

All I meant was that the auditorium was full of people who weren't there to
see Soundgarden. They were there because "a" band was playing there. They
would have been just as happy if it had been Alice Cooper or Hootie & the
Blowfish as long as they got to jump around.

I guess this list has kind of spoiled me. For years I didn't know anybody who
was into SG like I am. And nobody understood the infatuation. Until I found
the SOMMS list. Now I get a kick out of people across the country and around
the world who get the same feelings from the music that I do. Like I said,
you guys spoil me.

Another reason: I guess after reading all the flames about moshing, I was
kind of jaded toward the whole thing and was determined to just absorb the
band and the music, but I kept getting jumped on by stoned metal heads.

I'm not trying to say I'm better than anyone, I just think I would have had a
better time if I could have seen a show with just SOMMSters. People who could
get into the energy of the music for what it was.

Didn't mean to offend.

It's a collection of cartoon images, drawn by a guy called Tyler Martin,

the theme being a "sound garden", with Chris in overalls and Kim with
a wheelbarrow and Ben and Matt.....erm......kneeling on the ground,

After reading an interview with Ben Shepherd, I kinda get the
impression that Seattlites are getting sick of people moving into Seattle.
Has this started slowing down yet, or is there still a big exodus to the
Emerald City?
Also, is it just down-on-their-luck musicians that are immigrating, or
a whole ton of people. I'm curious as to your views on this.
(Ben was apparently really upset about it. He said he wanted to raise

Yeah, one of the main things I like about Grunge rock was that it is
against changing your appearance in any way, just to match a certain style.
I personally hate fashion, so the concept was attractive to me.
Chris's haircut was definitely not to suit media relations.
Here's what he said about it in the December issue of Details:
"one day, I went from wondering what I would look like with a shaved
head to 'That's pretty cool.' Then I put my hair in a big envelope and
mailed it off to my wife.
"The funny thing was, I did this really silly, personal thing for no

All the reviews were so good, it almost felt like I was there. =) Thanks

photographers every think of spritzing the man down with water before taking
pictures of him?!??!? AAAAUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!!! Let me just say that the
picture is hanging on my wall now, because I had this ferocious licking fit
right after I bought it. (Yes, I managed to control myself in the store...
I'm SO proud of myself!!!) But the full body shot of him on page 161...
jeez, the guy look GAUNT. Anyway, the article is decent... I especially
liked the parts about the video (bondage, yummy)... and this comment by
Chris:

"Reclusivity can become self-perpetuating. At first you rationalize that
going to a club where people recognize you is a bad idea; then going to a
neighborhood bar becomes a bad idea, too. Going to the grocery store becomes
a bad idea. Answering the phone becomes a bad idea. Then every time the dog
barks, you think the National Guard is on your roof ready to drill holes in
the shingles and shoot at you. So I have to deal with the outside world on
sort of a maintenance level... go out to a bar every so often and just be
around people."

You've got to love that man. He's addictive... kinda like whipped
cream. Chris Cornell and whipped cream. Now do you see the connection??
;-) And you people thought I just wanted to tie the man up and smear it all
over his sexy body. Jeez... you people are TWISTED. Heheheh...

Subject: The Point of it All

Leave it to this constantly guilt-stricken emotional mushball to post
this....but i have been thinking alot today about some of the
reactions to our Chicago posts, both public and the private ones I
have received. I remember how hard it was to read about Gemma's
meeting the band - i was totally psyched for her but wanted to be
there too. So, for the sake of feeling bad about any perceived
overkill (to which i contributed plenty ;-), I would like to say that
I think as a group there are really 2 main things we have been trying
to convey here:

1. The Fans: the fans on the list are truly *wonderful* people.....as
Jamie so eloquently put it, all genders, races, sizes, styles,
etc. came together and *loved* eachother because there is such an
intense bond. After reading and writing eachother for so long, it is
a great feeling to know that we all are real, good people and very
capable of being friends off this list.

2. The Band: We all know that the band is incredibly talented, that
is a given...and we all know we love their music, that is a
given.....BUT the most incredible thing to discover on top of all of
that is that they are WONDERFUL people. I think we have all been
trying to get that point across and i hope we have. I think I speak
for everyone involved when I say that this element makes our love for
Soundgarden so much more intense and so much more *real* Yeah, Ben has
a temper, but hey so do I. So do alot of us. Above and beyond the
known of their music, we now all know that they are great guys that
command tons of respect.

The Monday issue of the Tribune had the same lame ass interview that the
Sunday paper had. I wonder if the interviewer even bothered going to the
shows, or were too drunk to decipher what was going on in the first place.
Kinda makes you think.

Subject: Detroit show

Just got back from the show ehre at the palace. it was way good. i think
something is seriously wrong with chris though. about mid=way through he
starts doing one of his little between song things, and all of a sudden
lays down and starts saying in this high-pitched, little kid voice,
something about taking a nap in detroit. then when people start laughing
and hollering, he yells for everyone to shut the fuck up, he's trying to
take a nap. then he really got weird, and did some stupid shit. it was
kind of funny though, after that he went into i think fell on black days.
ben was crazy, doing all the stuff that ben does on stage. i really liked
the version of helter skelter they did, all slowed down. then, right
toward the end, ben starts playing the bass line to "nothing to say" and
chris starts talking about playing this old shit every once in a while, so
i figure they're going to do nothing to say, right? then they just went
into slaves and bulldozers, which still ruled, but was not nothing to say.
the, the coolest part was they ended, and we rushed down (no floor seats,
big bummer) to floor level, and the lights came on. no JCP, no nothing. we
couldn't believe the concert was over, but a bunch of people were leaving
and such, so my heart sank. then they all came back out and did no
attention with the lights on, which was really cool. then they did JCP,
also with thte lights on a lot of the time, then the lights went out, and
for about 15 minutes chris and kim just fucked around doing weird feedback
stuff with their guitars. it was kind of strange. anyway, that was the
show. no backstage, no meetings, but it was cool anyway.

Anna copied the lousy review the Tribune gave the concert, but so far it
was the only one that gave it a bad review. The SunTimes and the
Southtown both gave rave reviews, which I will send to Seth if he wants
them for the page. Personally I don't know how they could have gotten a
bad review. I've seen Soundgarden 6 times now and the Saturday concert
was the best I've ever seen. The other times were all between 90 and 92
and the band has really matured both as musicians and as performers.
Besides, the Trib is our "conservative" paper. They're probably all
still in a bad mood because Dole lost.

Subject: Chris, you're so trendy... ;-)

Well kiddies... I've devoted this evening to drooling over those new
pictures in Details of Chris. I realized (mostly by glancing through the
rest of the magazine) that Chris is sporting the new "look." The new, hip,
fashion-runway, everyone-wants-to-be-cool "look." And then I remembered what
the media is calling this new appearance/trend. They're calling it the
"heroin look." (Anyone see Trainspotting?) I wonder if Chris is aware of
this? I mean... the whole "shadow eyed, gaunt cheeks, wasted away... heroin
look"... it's kinda scary. Has anyone else noticed this? I know, I know...
Chris doesn't do his own make-up. But what does Susan think of it? Surely
she must be aware that Chris is being trussed up like a guy in a CK One
advertisement. All he needs is Kate Moss displaying her waif butt next to
him, and he could be hawking cologne in a big way. (Don't get me wrong...
he's totally gorgeous in the pictures, as always.) Hmmm... maybe I'm just
being paranoid. You'll have to excuse me, it's the drugs. ;-) Ok, I guess
I'm done babbling now. Love me, bye-bye...

Kool-Aid! Wait... before you start snapping pictures, let me take my shirt
off. There can never be too many shots of my sexy chest..." ~ Chris Cornell

Aha!! So I'm NOT the only one who thinks Chris looks like a CK
advertisement!! (Sorry kiddies... I had posted before checking my mail...
oops, mybad.) Evil, evil, evil photographers. They can make him look like a
heroin-whore ;-) but they can't get him to take his shirt off anymore??!?!?
