<<the grpahics/symbolism are too overt in places. maybe some of it is,
sally. but I have a strong suspicion that if that's the case, mtv had
nothing to do with it...any decisions made concerning exactly what chris
would be doing during the video would have been made by him, the rest of the
band and the director jerry casale. >>

That's a very good point, of course. However, I do think that since MTV has
cornered the video-playing market, they do set a certain standard. Metallica
and R.E.M. have also done videos with blatant Christ/God/religion symbolism.
Those are the videos that win the awards (who cares), so maybe directors are
subconsciously creating this stuff specifically for MTV (like the authors in
Rolling Stone dissing artists constantly). At the same time, I see your
point. I just wish there was another option! MTV sucks. Keep in mind that,
mostly, I liked the video a lot.

Re: the moshing thing. I wish people still "pogoed" like they used to. I'm
going to buy kneepads, a helmet...hell, a whole suit of armor...before
December 5th (playing on a Thursday??? Why...?).

Hey, that was me who posted the milk/cookie comparison. I was thinking of
food at the time...it's one of my favorite snacks. It sounds like
something a teen fanzine would ask, "which cookies the members of SG
favor". Hope Chris likes chocolate chip!

You know what? I messed up on my abbreviations. I get so damn confused

Funny, I was just thinking of TOTD this morning, and how the beginning
guitar licks in "Times of Trouble" are similar to Alice In Chains'
beginning guitar licks on "Rotten Apple" on Jar of Flies. Anyone ever
notice that? (If you have both releases, check those songs and see what
I'm talking about.)

Jonathan, I have to admit, when I first bought TOTD, I didn't think it was
all that great. This was before I knew who Chris Cornell and Soundgarden
were. I've had it for a few years now, and with my love of SG and PJ, I
have grown to extremely like it--every song. A couple of weeks ago a
friend of mine asked if he could have it. I was like, "Hell NO!" I really
like the song Reach Down, but I would have to say my favorite songs would
be Times of Trouble, Wooden Jesus, and Four Walled World(Mike Mc Cready
kicks ass on that one.)

Hey, everybody.

I was looking through the online interviews on the Unofficial Hompage
last night, and I came across one with Matt Cameron. Wow, I didn't realize
that the guys in SG actually knew about our list and homepage. Matt
actually talks about Seth in the interview!!!!
Does that mean that Soundgarden listens in on what we're talking about
here? That would be so cool if they did.
Ok, Kim, if you can see this, I wanna know if I can interview you for
a biography I'm writing on you. I'll buy you some beer. Whatdya say? :)

Now that I look like a complete moron, I'd better shut up.

Matt has been known to read through the digest archive on Seth's site.
Apparently he loves Seth's site. (And who doesn't?) He has sent at
least one message to the list through Seth. As far as I/we know none of
the other members of the band browse the web. Chris is basically
anti-computer. Matt's message should be in the archive there
somewhere. He sent it sometime around the release of DOTU, shortly
after the Blind Date gig. In the message he defended the band's right
to perform at such a gig.

Ah yes, listers, the Christmas season is upon us. It's time for
anybody and everybody who sells something or anything to release a new
product so that the consumer will buy it and give it to an
unnapreciative friend or relative. (man is that cynical). The other
day I had a thought for a thread, which, as far as I can recall, has not
been discussed on the list. I was thinking about Elvis. Didn't he do
some kind of Christmas album? Actually I'm sure he did, it's on 8-track
somewhere in the basement. Many artists have put out Christmas albums.
What if Soundgarden were to put out a Christmas album? What songs would
they cover? And which of their own songs would be included? Imagine
the version of Little Drummer Boy they could do! Any thoughts?
Geoff
p.s. Now I know this is a silly thread, if not a downright stupid
thread, but its better than half the threads recently, and the fact that
is stupid practically guarantees a strong response

Subject: Re: ultimate sg setlist
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

After reading the reviews of the first shows of the US tour, I have to
say that SG is playing most of their "hits" in the setlist every night.
More than half the songs on the setlist were hit singles released from
the last three albums and nothing is played earlier than the
Badmotorfinger era. It seems that ever since the tour began last June
they ALWAYS play Spoonman, My Wave, Black Hole Sun, FOBD, Outshined, and
other songs that were hits off the last 3 records and don't seem to have
any sort of variation in the setlist.

I thought that the band hated playing all hits off their albums! During
the Superunknown tour they purposely didn't play Outshined because it
was such a huge hit! Hell, Ben even said during an interview four years
ago that he hated playing the song because it became so big. People only
knew SG for being the "Outshined" band. So why bring back this song into
the setlist now when it was avoided like the plague only two years ago??
The same is the case with "Black Hole Sun". When sales of Superunknown
exploded two years ago, Black Hole Sun was the big single. Cornell was
always not very enthusiastic about playing this song during that tour.
But they didn't stop playing it. Even with the new solo version of the
song on this tour, there isn't really anything new or amazing about the
performance. I was yawning when they played it at Lolla 96' this year as
all the so called "fans" started yelling and moshing along to this
sleeper.

I just wish they'd play other songs besides just the hits, ALL THE TIME.
They should try at least play more songs off the new album like
Overfloater, Tighter & Tighter, An Unkind, and Applebite. These songs
have never been or are almost never performed live. Most of the time its
just Pretty Noose and Burden, Outshined, or FOBD. At least try and
freshen up FOBD by playing the demo version! And how about some older
stuff from Ultramega OK like Beyond the Wheel or Flower?? Somehow though
no matter how much I hope, I know they'll never play them...

Well, anyway here's my setlist:
1.Fresh Tendrils 2.Head Down 3.Limo Wreck 4.Beyond the Wheel 5.Room A
thousand Years Wide 6.Into The Void 7.Slaves And Bulldozers/8.Jesus
Christ Pose (medley) 9.Christy 10.Kickstand 11.Ty Cobb 12. Blow Up
the Outide 13.Birth Ritual 14.Flower 15.Incessant Mace

Siva

I think the ultimate setlist would have to include "She Likes Surprises",
"Slaves & Bulldozers", "Limo Wreck", "Mailman" and maybe some songs from
Temple of the Dog.

And referring back to Chris' vocals, some other cool parts are the entire
"Tighter & Tighter" song, "anything in colorful disguises" from "She
Likes Surprises", and "I'll call you beautiful" from "Call Me A Dog".

Sorry about taking so long to respond and let you all know how opening night
was. But it was kind of a fucked up evening.

I'll begin at the beginning:

#1 I had the whole day off. Wnated to be at Arena by 2:00 - Asshole boss made
me work until 3:00.

#2 FINALLY arrive at about 4:00. Me and my friend Bill are numbers 5 & 6 in
line.

#3 Girls 1,2, 3, 4 tell us Chirs Cornell JUST LEFT 5 MINUTES
AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE HAD COME OUT AND TALKED TO THEM FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES.
SIGNED AUTOGRAPHS AND B.S'D WITH EVERYONE AND I MISSED IT BECAUSE i WORK FOR
A PRICK.

#4 DID NOT GET BACK STAGE PASSES

#5 Opening bands: Yawn : O
Enuff said

HOWEVER SG KICKED ASS-------IN RARE FORM-------BETTER THAN IN '94
(My one bitch: they only play "hits")

#6 And this is the worst:

Utah SG "fans" (which they think they are but they are not) are complete
fucking metal; head clueless fuck-heads.
They don't understand the music
or the complexity, the dynamics, nothing, they just want to jump around like
a bunch of fucking retards.
They are fucking concert goers who would be happy with any loud noise!
EXAMPLE: Chris does his solo version of BHS. These dumb fuckers, literally,
stand there all slack jawed like,"When are the BIG guitars going to come back
in so we can surf some more????). They didn't even fucking get that IT WAS
CHRIS DOING A SOLO FOR CHRISSAKES!!!

#7 I was on the front row and felt like I had the shit kicked out of me by
these fucking cock rocker concert goers. Now I'm not a little guy. I'm 6ft,
over 200 lbs and I work out daily so I'm not fat. But I was getting the hell
kicked out of me. One guy, ON PURPOSE, punched me in the face. And yes like
an asshole, I beat the shit out of him. But he did do it on purpose because
people were shoving me from behind into him. And I lost my temper. Sorry
Caryn

I fucking hate Utah. There are no true SG fans here (with the exception of
Bill and myself) Thank God I'm going to see SG in Seattle December 11, with
real fans that know the fucking music.

don't get me wrong. The show was great, I love SG, and Chris is God, I love
my fellow SOMMSters, but Utah concert goers are idiots.

Okay. Hear's my list of 12 songs that Soundgarden would put on a
Christmas album:

1. Santa got run over by a reindeer
2. Christmas at Ground Zero (originally by Weird Al Yankovic)
3. Funk Funky Christmas (Originally done by the New Kids On The Block.
This one could turn out VERY interesting. :) )
4. Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer
5. White Christmas
6. Up On The Housetop
7. There's something stuck up in the chimney (I love this song. :) )
8. What's this? (from The Nightmare Before Christmas)
9. Frosty The Snowman
10. Jingle Bells
11. Deck the Halls
12. Santa Claus Pose (Hehehe. :) )

Right on, right on, my brother. :) I think that the album should be
called SantaUnknown. :) (Sorry, that was TOO stupid.)

Hi, again.

I went to the mall today and got myself a copy of the Singles
soundtrack. It is SO good. :) I'm really glad I got it.
Birth Ritual is a really good song too. Too bad, SG didn't put it
on Badmotorfinger, because of the problems they had with the song
arrangement.
Okie, here's question for all of you: In Singles, when Soundgarden is
playing in the club, Chris looks really nervous. I noticed this also when
SG played Pretty Noose and BIMH on Saturday Night Live back in May. Does
he always look that nervous on stage, or was he just really conscious that
20 million people were watching them perform?

the right track. Most CDs (whether they be by overseas bands or by =
Aussie bands) have an off-the-shelf price of around $30 - or approx $23 =
US. Of course you can be lucky enough to get some at discount stores. =
You'd think we could at least get CDs by our own bands for a cheaper =
price than the overseas ones, huh?

Here I am, feeling rather hungover on a Sunday afternoon, catching up on =
the Somms posts from the last few days, and I have received some vibes =
from somewhere in Chicago.

Jamie & Toni, are you two behaving yourselves over there right now?? =
For I think it's now sometime late Saturday night for you - maybe early =
Sunday morning - and you'll all be at a SG show AS I TYPE THIS. =20

Hope you're all having a wow of a time - don't forget to get plenty of =
rest on Sunday, all ready to go over it again on Sunday night! :-)

Waiting impatiently over here to hear all about it,
Carolyn the Morbid Frump
