Surely, I think that any cover version
of any Bob Dylan song is better than the original, even when performed by an
unknown band or an awful singer. I think that
nobody can be as boring as Bob
Dylan. His style is one I find
gross
and slow,
regardless that it is a style from where many others
descend. Other covers sound happier and faster.
Even the Rolling Stones have covered him sounding better than Bob himself.

Subject: HATER.... October 31st 1996

Greetings from SEATLLE!!
and also Greetings from San Diego ( because now as I finish this up I am
home...UGH!!)

What a great time in Seattle... I loved it!!! Cant wait for spring break so
I can go back!!!
It's only 6 more months right....too long me thinks!! more on the Seattle
trip later... I wanted to get this out before its like 2 weeks old.

This is my take on the Hater show.... its a LONG one!! so Beware!!

HATER... What a show!!!!

~~HATER at the OK Hotel----Hallowen 1996 ~~
We arrived at the OK at about 5pm to meet up with everyone. We got there a
little to early I suppose due to the fact that there was only about ( maybe
and I stress MAYBE! ) 15 people in the whole joint. Shroom, Vikki and myself
got situated and did our intoductions( Hi to Terrie and Christy!!) and took
a seat next to the other somm-sters that had already made it there. Within in
about 5 minutes of being there Vikki noticed a guy sitting at the bar.( GO
VIKKI ).....Tall guy..dark hair.. black shirt.....Hmmmm....I wonder.....YES
It was no other than one of the proprietors of the OK Hotel, Ben Shepherd!!
We all made our way to Ben for autographs and such....I had Ben sign my
ticket.I didnt't really talk to him other than " Can you sign this"? and
"Thanks".( I was SO unbeliveably nervous) He was so accomodating and
pleasent even though I was the last person to ask him for his autograph. He
can be very intimidating...I have seen him do it... but just approaching him
he was very nice. Also sitting at the bar was John McBain ( you know
Wellwater Conspiracy ) I also had John sign my ticket and it gave me a chance
to ask John about Wellwater..Thanks John for all that info that you gave me
(Read: total sacrcasm!!) I also talked to him about Chris's page...all I
could get out of my mouth was "Chris McKenzie's page" and he just started
saying how he keeps meaning to go and check it out....WOW! and here I thought
that he had already checked it out...hmmmmm... ( Note to Chris: I will mail
you all the dirt when I get home from Seattle!!)
After all the excitement had gone down... we all ordered something to eat and
got some drinks and settled ourselves down to wait for time to pass so HATER
would hit the stage.Around 10 or so the first band hit the stage... Kent-3 (
YUCK!!!). Aaron ( List Thug), Ryan( baby thug), Vikki, Shroom, Caryn and
Chris, and myself all took the front stage. We all waited there until Hater
came on... well at least some of us did.I decided to wander and see who else
had shown up.... well on my way out I BUMPED into ( and I mean BUMPED into)
Ben....He was very nice. I aploloized and said " excuse me" and looked up at
him... and he just gave me a nice smile.(Yummm...Ben!)I wandered out of the
ballroom and found that Matt had shown up.Shroom and Christy were already
talking to him.. so I made my way over to him and talked a little to him and
had him sign my ticket also.I also mentioned to him that I had brought shirts
and hats from the list for him and the band. It wasnt until after the show
that I really got to introduce myself to Matt. Also after talking to Matt I
started talking to Stewart ( Avast studio ) Hallerman.

I guess it was around 12 or so and Hater was about to go on so I went back up
to recalim my space right next to Ryan and Vikki. It was so GREAT to be up
front to see Matt and Ben!! Jen, Christy, Terrie and Bonnie had also made
there way down to the front. The band hit the stage and we were stoked ...I
couldnt belive that Ben was only like 3 or 4 feet from me ( not that I was
freaking out.... I was used to it by this point.. he was within reaching
distance from me when I was at the bar drinking talking to John(information
central) McBain). Ben leaned over the crowd with the mike stand which almost
hit Ryan and myself in the face... Ben realized this and the next time he did
that same manuver he held it back so us FANS wouldnt get hit with....Ahhhh...
what a sweetie ( whoa.. did I just call Ben a sweetie....oh boy!)Well it was
only about 3 songs into it when this guy started throwing stuff at Ben. At
first Ben ignored it..he tried even spitting on him...but after a couple of
times of this guy throwing shit he actually walked over to the edge of the
stage and gave some of those famous* DONT FUCK WITH ME *looks that Ben is
good at doing.. The guy obviously didn't get the hint so the guy started
throwing shit again.Well that is all that it took.Ben was AIRBORN....
unfortunatly Caryn was somehow in between the guy and Ben and ended up with
( what I could see ) a boot in the mouth... which knocked her down and gave
her a fat lip and a swollen nose. That was a BIG bummer to us SOMMS-sters to
say the least!!Ben finally returned to the stage and all seemed well...
until the guy started throwing shit once again. This time Ben was
horizontal...literally!!!!( it was like watching Superman take off from the
stage)Ben went straight for the guy!! there seemed to be a bit of a scuffle..
but Ben being Ben he finally threw the guy out...only after leaving the rest
of the band to finish the song as a instrumental.
Ben finally returned to the stage... only having his shirt nearly ripped off
of him.( umm...ummm.. catching my breath!!)I could go on here for
awhile...actaully a long while!! ( read gratiutious comments about Ben's sexy
body!! Sex fantasy in progress!! YUM!! ) oops... sorry off the track!!

Ben is back and the show is still going on!! all seems well!! we are all
rocking out having a good time...when these piece of shit butt-rock drunk
assholes start this mini mosh fest right behind us...tyring to get us to move
so that they can take our spots....sorry just because we are girls doesnt
mean we dont know how to keep our spots!! ( right Vikki and Jenn
;)...heheh!!) I wish I had the show on video.... you cant belive the manuvers
that Vikki was pulling... this girl was kicking butt and taking names!!!!!
Anyway here we are fighting these guys off and still managing to enjoy the
show! (I'm not going to go into deatil here...its just way to long to write
about who did what to know... ya know.) I will say that HATER rocked!!!
I am so glad that I had the chance to see them...they did play " who do I
kill " along with " Down undershoe" I think.. ( Vikki has the set list.. even
gracied with Ben's spit ) They mostly played new stuff... and I absolutly
love it.. especially the song Nancy!! At one point Ben (who was sitting on
some of the amps) says to John " lets play that S song ".. John not hearing
him correctly says " WHAT".. so Ben says it again..." that S song" well I
knew what that meant... SAD McBAIN. I was thrilled!!! I watched Matt get up
from his kit and duck behind the curtain.....then Greg Kiplinger took a
seat.... then out of the blue they start into this other song....HUH? well I
guess they had a change of heart...they never did do SAD... although I did
see Matt pull the curtain back with gituar in hand... I was SO bummed!! I
really wish that they would have done it! I really would have liked Matt to
sing...oh well next time I suppose! I am not sure what they ended with...
but it just seemed like the set was WAY to short... after all, some of my
attention was on the drunk butt-rockers from HELL and trying to keep them off
of me!!!!

Once the show was over I made it back to our table to get the shirts and hats
so that I could hopefully give them to Matt.... after a little waiting around
I finally yelled " MATT " and waved one of the hats since he was packing up
his gear backstage. He looked up from what he was doing and gave me a grin...
he made his over to me and I handed him the stuff.. I really dont know what I
said to him execpt " I just wanted to introduce myself...HI, I'm Dena" I then
reach my hand out to shake his.( READ... DEATH GRIP!! this guy squezzed my
hand SO hard... I couldnt belive it!!! ). and he says to me... " Dana... Hi
I'm Matt " well he blotched my name... but I was too into the moment to
correct him so Shroomy had to ( Love Ya Babe )...he then repeated my name
correctly... Vikki was right though.. he smiles at you as if your his long
lost friend... that look will forever be imbeded in my memory ( because I
didnt have a camera, DAMN ME!!!) anyway by this time alot of the other
sommsters came over to talk to him also...Vikki also introduced herself to
him again...(and I swear when he sees her in Chicago he is gonna drop one )
Matt was too funny about seeing Vikki there is Seattle. It seems that he
thought that she lived in Barcelona.... but when she replied " I live here "
he laughed and said " hey so do I "... I craked up!! well soon after that
Matt-ster had to go and finish packing up his gear..and we had to leave
also....
but on the way out Ben was standing by the door.... so as we all walked past
him we all shook his hand and say something like " good show "...well at
least that is what I told him..... I dont really know what the others told
him....since I was too into just meeting Matt and knowing that he now has the
officail shirts and hats from the SOMMS list!!!!!( GO ME... I know I am SO
modest... :)~ )

Vikki, Shroom, and myself got back to the car.. and then headed to IHOP with
the list thug and baby thug to rehash the night and tell of our war
stories....I did take pictures of VIkki and my bruises for
momentos...hehehe... THE END!!!!

Well thats it .... as long as it is.. I know that I forgot some vital info...
so I am sorry to those of you who were at the show!! There was some info I
did leave out.. because if I didnt I would never hear the end of it!!! its
late now.. and I need some sleep...

BYE!!

<< For those of you not informed about
what Walpurgis Night is: I believe it is the longest night of summer and
on the Satanists calandar it is the second most important holiday, after
 one's birthday." >>

Actually walpurgis nacht is celebrated on the night of april 31st. Walpurgis
is a celebration of the coming spring. The same day is celebrated in the
Wiccan religon but it is called Beltain. The reason for the two spellings of
the names is due to two diffrent cultures. Beltain is a celebration of the
coming of spring, fertility, the light part of the year and I also believe
good crops. I am sure that Walpurgis is also a celebration for the same
beliefs.

I would tend to think that Matt choose his publishing title after the
Walpurgis group that ( thanks Blind Dog )concentrates on " small scale and
contemporary opera and music theatre, commisioning composers and artists from
within the contemporary performing arts to write and create new works" I
guess it could be possible that Matt is a practicing witch... but just
knowing that Matt did play with the Seattle Symphony for the song " Black
Hole Sun " when the Symphony did thier renditions of the popular Seattle
bands songs makes me think otherwise!!! And if I am not mistaken I think it
was Matt who re-arranged the song so that it would play better when the
symphony did it.

well there is my 2 cents .

I'm there :) Brisbane Sommsfest 97! :) since we get them early in 97 :)
Anyone heard from Jackhammer in awhile? maybe South Africa got the better of
him.

Ok seeing as I have no idea where this info came from or what no, what did
you find out about tickets if anything? when can I come down and park my
butt outside festival hall :) BTW 'The Heritage' would be one bet of where
the band will stay. Pearl Jam stayed there, and that's where I met Eddie so
maybe Soundgarden will do the same :) Pester them to help with the FAQ me
thinks :)

Thanks for the info anyway.....keep me informed...off to hunt down a copy of
Time off and Rave for this week :)

Any other lurkers from Brissy coming out for this?

        Hi again,

The comment about CC's low voice vs. the high voice really got me thinking,
and I must say I prefer it when they do multiple voc. tracks (which is
often) so you have both sounds (sometimes up to 3 or 4?) at the same time. I
have always thought that was cool as heck. The best examples of this, in
the rare possibility that everyone isn't already fully aware of this and I'm
just babbling, are on the last two albums. Whew...talk about your run-on

I may have asked this before but redundancy tends to cycle in my life

gets released overseas and not in the US. I realized that BUTOW single

Hi, everyone.

I've just joined this list, so I thought I'd introduce myself to you.

My name is Michael Apple. I'm 18 years old, and I've been a
Soundgarden fan for four years now. My favorite album is Badmotorfinger,
and my favorite song is Room A Thousand Years Wide.
Soundgarden is what made me want to play guitar. Now, I've been in a
grunge rock band for two years (with our first EP coming out in a month.)
Our band is called Sphaghnum, and the story behind that name is really long
, so I won't tell it here. :)
I'm earning a degree at Plattsburgh State University in English. I've
written a novel and a television script.
Currently I'm collecting info for a biography of Kim Thayil that I'm
writing. The Unofficial Soundgarden Site gave me more information than my
college's entire periodical database. You guys rock. :)
I can't seem to find much info on Kim's childhood or early band
experiences (like with Zippy and his Vast Army of Pinheads.) Does anyone
have any articles or anything on that? I also can't find out much about
his family or childhood. If someone could give me some info, I'd really be
grateful.
Also, I live in Plattsburgh, NY (across Lake Champlain from Burlington
, VT), and I was wondering if Soundgarden has any plans on playing here. I
have their tour schedule for Fall 1996, but the closest place listed is NYC
(six hours away.) I hope they play here, because only two grunge rock
bands have played here before: Foo Fighters and Candlebox (and Candlebox
wasn't part of the older scene, like, Deep Six and stuff. :( )
Well, it's nice to meet you all.
     See ya around.

i prefer the high-pitched voice (birth ritual, nothing to say, entering and
little joe (?)) over the deep voice (room a thousand years wide (?)). it has
more kick but it is more difficult (almost impossible) to recreate (?) in a

excuse me... can't you READ?? you weren't even fucking THERE. it was a
matter of SELF DEFENSE... vikki, poor poor vikki, TRIED not to get
involved. she just didn't react... but she's this toothpick of a woman
and if she hadn't pushed back she would have probably been in the hospital
right now. i would have much preferred if i had my own boyfriend taking
care of ME but if chris (mansfield) hadn't been trying to police eveyrone
in our group, vikki would have gotten seriously hurt, aaron would be in
jail (so would ryan), and shroom and dena would have been more injured
than they already were. when dena was in the bahtroom at my house the day
after the show we heard her going 'ouch!' and when she came out she told
us about all these bruises that she didn't even realize that she had.

there is only so many times you can have some guys hand grabbing you
before you turn around and push him away from you with every bit of force
you can muster. that's not playing their little game, that's fighting
back. period. we're making a joke about it because otherwise we'd just
be fucking depressed that the event that many of us waited for for MONTHS
(and/or travelled thousands of miles to be at) was ruined by a bunch of
drunk fuckheads.

To answer this totally inane comment: You OBVIOUSLY have not
comprehended SHIT about what's been posted regarding the Hater show. We had
no choice in fighting with those fucked up moshers. Leaving our spots wasn't
an option, because we had gotten there early to claim them. We even sat
through Kent 3 (ick) just to keep those spots. What did you expect us to
do... give up and move to the back just because a bunch of guys (whose
mothers should have drowned them at birth) wanted to be where we were, and
were willing to use brute force to get there? I don't fucking think so. And
let me tell you this, little boy... if someone is gonna push me, grab me, or
do something else to hurt me physically... then by God, I'm going to fucking
hurt them back. I don't care what ANYONE else says about it... that's just
me. (I have to add here... Terry, you RULE!) And if I CAN'T hurt them
physically, then I'll find another way to get them back (such as grabbing
that guys glasses, and stomping the shit out of them... he shouldn't have
pushed and spit on me. Maybe next time he'll think twice about messing with
someone smaller than him). Yes, I'm a vindictive little bitch... and I'm
very happy being that way.

>i hope you all feel fucking proud.

I'm very proud of the way that ALL of us held our own against those
fucking idiots. We didn't instigate ANYTHING during that show... we just
defended ourselves when they tried to hurt or move us. We did NOTHING wrong.
Jeez... we couldn't even get ahold of a security guard to put a stop to the
moshing, because there WERE no security guards. We were on our own, and we
handled ourselves like pros.

standard black ayotte one. (this looks like the drumkit jimmy chamberlain
borrowed last year when the pumpkins came through and their equipment was

I agree with Seth 100%. The truth is, I did not write Silver Management
asking for backstage passes. I wrote and told them that a bunch of us
were going to the Chicago shows and were planning a mini SOMMS
convention (there are over 20 of us going to these shows). I asked if
there was any way our devotion to the band could be recognised, and said
that even a nod in our direction would make our day. I never dreamed
that they would set up this meeting, and I agree that it was a terrific
stroke of luck. So all of you who have been emailing me asking how to
get backstage passes: I don't know! This meeting was the idea of Silver
Management and we will be forever in debt to them, and to Erin Haley for
all her work to organize it. I think it would be terrible to assume that
just because they are doing it for us that they SHOULD be doing it for
everyone. So I would suggest that if you write to Silver Management you
don't come out and ask for passes because I can almost guarantee you
that that isn't going to work. Stay humble and write as a fan and who
knows?

I don't think you're far off on the idea about the JCP imagery in the
video. You even went so far as too say you saw it in the shadows. Good
observation! Now I'm going to look at that vid again when I go home and

Caryn I was really sorry to hear about your experience at the Hater
show. But I think you guys are wrong to transfer your feelings about
what Hater did (or should I say didn't do) to Soundgarden - obviously
even though they share two of the same members they are not the same
band. And while I can't say similar things won't happen at the
Soundgarden shows, I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt
until we know for sure. Besides, there IS security at the Aragon, and
they've been known to be pretty Neanderthal. From what I've seen in the
past, the asshole moshers got it pretty bad from security. So, we'll
just have to wait and see. I mean we're talking about a place referred
to as the Aragon "Brawlroom". I find it hard to blame ALL audience
behaviour on the band (although Ben certainly should have taken
responsibility for his own behaviour). I do agree that mosh pits have to
go - I find the whole idea incredibly stupid.

I guess right now I'm pretty starry-eyed about Soundgarden and Silver
Management, considering how nice they've been to those of us attending
the Chicago shows. I DO get the feeling that we matter to them, very
much, and I have been incredibly impressed at the effort made to
accomodate us. I think it is very sad if Soundgarden loses fans because
of a Hater show. Maybe they need to do something about Ben's attitude
and behaviour.

Chris is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. I would have to say
that I like both of his voices. His "lower" voice is probably best used on
acoustic numbers like "Seasons" and the acoustic version of "Like Suicide".
When he gets high pitched on songs like "Overfloater", "Mailman", and
"Jesus Christ Pose", I can just FEEL it. It's not a feeling I can describe
with words. Most of the SOMMSters must know what I'm talking about.
Sorry, but I can't say I like one more than the other. Chris Cornell
without one of his types of voices is like cookies without milk.

the fact that they acted with reckless disregard in a venue that is at
least partially owned by one of them -- i'm sorry, but it DOES have
bearing on them. matt and ben ARE members of soundgarden.

that wasn't my point. my point was, how could they let the situation that
happened, happen? they had total control there. they chose to ignore it.

> to as the Aragon "Brawlroom". I find it hard to blame ALL audience

i never blame audience behavior on the band. i did in this case because
they incited it and did nothing to stop it when there was no security.
they certainly could have gotten the bouncers from the front room to come
in an dbreak things up if they didn't want to step in or address the
audience themselves. they didn't. hmmm, what does this say? (it also
says something about the ok hotel, and i'll certainly take that into
account when going to see a show there in future, IF i choose to).

*humph* yes, and since we know that there are lurkers on the list, let us
not say anything that might revoke our precious backstage passes.

hey -- wait to see what you get from them before being so starry-eyed. do
any of you really know what a 'walk-through' means? it doesn't mean you

I'm sure everyone got this particular message from speakeasy, but
if you have yet to sneek a peek at the soundgarden content, go and do it
now. while there are only three pictures of the band (one of them
difficult to even decipher, no less), they are pretty cool. you can
probably discard the first blue one, which I think was taken as a promo
for superunk (I've seen a similar one in yellow). but make an effort to
see the second and third links. the second one is the black hole sun
picture, which I originally thought was a drawing of some kind, but is
actually a photo. the blurb that stands beside it is *excellent* material
for the faq :)

the third is an alternate to the cover of dotu. perhaps we may
rekindle an old debate and argue about who is who? I wager that the
figures from left to right are: kim, ben, chris (in a rather gumby-ish

I have a feeling that silentjoe and I will probably be getting
into town at around 4 or 5 am. since jackhammer hasn't subbed back on,
you may have heard that carolyn has forwarded him the necessary documents.
I don't imagine that there will be hordes of people getting there very
early (not like the pumpkins or pj. for those not fortunate enough to
live in this wonderful burg, tickets to pj - approx. 5000 from
memory - actually sold out in *15* minutes), but just in case there are
more sg fans in brisbane than I thought, we'll be in there earlier than
most. like I said earlier, I'll probably be in my hendrix tshirt, but
maybe you could take a look in the member directory to see what I really
look like? I've seen jackhammer in there, but you are sadly remiss :(

in more news to hand - I walked down to the ticket office at
festival hall yesterday while waiting for my train, to see how things
were. the show is definitely on for the 22nd of january and tickets go on
sale this monday (the 11th). I have the very first press advertisment for
same in front of me, interestingly the final lineup is not complete. so
far the bill stands at soundgarden and you am I, but there is still one
more band to be added. perhaps we will be graced with powderfinger,
regurgitator or the superjesus? I realise that a hater/wwc support is out
of the question, so maybe we will get one of those three :)

small musing - the band must have really enjoyed their tour here
in 1994. the above show coincides almost to the exact date (only two days
out) with the corresponding show of 94, held at the sweaty, humid and
alcoholic confines of the roxy. silentjoe tells me that at one point chris
yelled "hey, give me my ring back" and looked like he was going to jump
into the audience. apparently some buffoon in the crowd had stolen a ring
off his finger as chris leant into the crowd. but I guess that hasn't
soured the experience enough for them to pass us by this time 'round.

Hey, guys. I couldn't help but notice the talk about moshing at the Hater
show, and what Ben Shepherd did, when that guy annoyed him.
First of all, moshing is completely safe when you know how to do it
right. Just keep your arms tucked in and slam around, and no one will get
hurt. Most injuries from moshing occur when people don't know how to doit
right and punch and kick their way through the crowd.
Also, the possibility of death from moshing is greatly exaggerated.
Only one death has occurred from moshing, and that was because a guy
climbed up onto the stage to dive, and a security guy grabbed him by the
back of the head. The guy fell short of the crowd and broke his neck.
As for Ben's actions, I think they were great (except for the fact
that he hit the wrong person. I'm sure that he'd feel bad about that if he
knew. :( ) If someone is stupid enough to spit on an aggressive guy like
Ben, they deserve to have their teeth knocked out. It's just unfortunate
that the wrong person got hit.
I've moshed at two concerts (Live, and Sponge) and I've never gotten
hurt, other than small bruises from crowdsurfing. I respect all your
opinions, but moshing is definitely NOT a serious problem.

Ahhhh, yes, Mel, that is one of my absolute favorite parts of ToTD, in
fact I think the CD is worn out on that spot from playing that word
over and over and over....Actually, I think the vocals on ToTD are
some of Chris' best ever. And as much as I am in total awe of his
high pitched "screams", there is nothing to me like his deep stuff,

I think it is wonderful, but really not so amazing, that they're doing this
in Chicago. As I'm sure you know, most bands do meet-n-greets before or

You know what Caryn, sometimes I wonder why you're even on this list.
You don't seem to care much for Soundgarden anymore. And no, just
because Ben and Matt are in Hater I don't see how that relates to
Soundgarden. It does say something about THEM (Ben and Matt) but not
about Soundgarden.

You have no idea what I've been discussing with Silver Management
because I have chosen not to put on the list things that only concern a
small segment of the list. Of course I've heard of public relations, it
happens to be the business my husband is in. And Erin made it very clear
what a "walk-through" was. However, since then there have been further
developments that those of us who are going will be sure to share with
the list after the show. Perhaps I'm naive, but I DO believe in the
sincerity of Silver Management and I don't know why you feel the need to
try to lessen what those of us who are involved find to be a very
exciting thing. I think part of you wants to know better, but I know
you are wrong.

wow, that is a TOUGH question. on songs like "beyond the wheel"
with out the stratospheric vocals, i think the song would lose the

lose the impact it has. i really can't decide. i love his voice up

how can you ignore that fully ONE HALF of soundgarden are in hater? it's
not like john mc bain was an asshole and so i decided to be angry at
soundgarden. i'm angry at soundgarden because of the actions of half of the
band! why is this so unthinkable?

>You know what Caryn, sometimes I wonder why you're even on this list.

oooh... kathie, are you now judging soundgarden-worthiness? i mean, i guess
i'm not a real soundgarden fan because i bother to question the morals and
standards of two of the group members, or because i decided not to go to
chicago. oh well. until seth throws me off, or *i* decide to leave, i'm here.

>You don't seem to care much for Soundgarden anymore.

and gee, this turn of events has been since when? ....since, let's see,
hmmm, the hater show was October 31. it's now november 6. it hasn't even
been a week, and suddenly, I 'don't seem to care much for soundgarden
anymore.' no, not at all. i only:

- --sat up last night after logging off to send in the info on the 'hype!'
boxed set, detailed info, so that anyone else on this list who might want it
wouldn't lose out on the chance
- --ran into the 'hype!' contest on the web while doing work research this
morning and took time out to send it to the list so that listers would know
about it
- --sat up with the rest of the gang last friday night making video captures
for *seth's* web page (once we were done making some for my pearl jam page,
admittedly; but we did stay up late to get this stuff)

just because i am going to dare to question the band that so many of us
respect doesn't make me a lesser fan. don't you dare tell me how to judge
my appreciation of this band. this is unlike you, kathie.

>And no, just
>because Ben and Matt are in Hater I don't see how that relates to

i don't like everclear -- although i think they used to be a damn fine live
band who worked their asses off to get where they are -- because the lead
singer beats his wife (or did in the past. let's not get into this debate
here). i think it says something about the band. i won't buy their albums
or go to their shows any longer. i think it's morally reprehensible.

i think ben and matt's conduct towards their fans at that show was
reprehensible. they had many courses of action they could have taken and
they chose to do NOTHING. their attitudes as private citizens most
certainly DO carry over into their band affiliation.

>You have no idea what I've been discussing with Silver Management

>small segment of the list.

okay, here we go: "i know something but i'm not telling" "aren't we ALL so
special that we get to meet the band and the rest of the list doesn't".
that's bullshit and it's disgusting. what elitism. how unfair to the rest
of the list to wave this in our faces like this. make us all feel like shit.

no wonder you don't want anyone else to contact silver management (although
i have to say that i agree with you. however, i don't think that we're
entitled to any special treatment whatsoever)

>Of course I've heard of public relations, it
>happens to be the business my husband is in.

oh, like i'm supposed to know this? it's not exactly in your member
profile, kathie.

>And Erin made it very clear
>what a "walk-through" was.

...but everyone on this list who is going is acting like it's 'party with
the band' time. i just don't want to see more people's expectations get
shattered when it's not what they think it is. i didn't say anything
earlier because i knew this is the kind of defensive, protective reaction it
would receive.

>However, since then there have been further
>developments that those of us who are going will be sure to share with
>the list after the show.

oh boy... here we go again. 'we are all just SOOOOOO special and we have
this BIG SECRET that we can't tell you!' really, kathie. i know you're
excited but i do think this is uncalled for. it's great that you stepped up
to the plate and actually contacted silver management, instead of being like
other people who expect someone to do it for them. you wanted this to
happen so you took steps to make it happen. but this does NOT make you all
more special than the rest of us, or more of a soundgarden fan than the rest
of us.

>Perhaps I'm naive, but I DO believe in the
>sincerity of Silver Management and I don't know why you feel the need to
>try to lessen what those of us who are involved find to be a very
>exciting thing. I think part of you wants to know better, but I know
>you are wrong.

you don't know anything yet, now do you Kathie? i just might know more
about what's going on than you know. and since you're not going to share
your special little secret with the rest of us who are so unworthy, I can't
possibly debate anything further.

i am happy for you and jamie and toni and andrea and aaron and liza and the
people that i know who will be at the show who are excited about it. i am
excited because they are excited. if i was going, i'd be going with the
rest of the gang. it is not something i would want to organize for the
shows here, but again, i totally admire and respect you for getting this
together. but i do think it is out of line for you to question why i am on
this list and my soundgarden 'fanness'. i will question this band and any
other band that i care about if i choose to. that is my right and
personally i feel it is my duty as a loyal fan. can we not let the fact
that some people are getting backstage passes cloud our vision? the band did
not suddenly become saints overnight.

and thank you to everyone. seriously: you have my sincere gratitude

> so, who was the 200,000th? and what did they get as a prize? something to
> rival chris mackenzie's prize for being the 100,000th, i'm sure. ;->

there's actually a (somewhat) interesting story behind the 200000th. i
got home from work, loaded up the page (as i always do; hits from my
machine are not reflected in the counter), and noticed that it was
much closer to the big 200k than i thought it was going to be. so i
reloaded it. and reloaded it again. and i realized that someone was
intentionally reloading it somewhere else just to bring it to 200k. in
about 20 seconds, there were more than 100 hits, bringing it to about
199890.

so i logged in and removed the counter from the page. :) i hadn't yet
modified the counter script so that it would do something special when
it was at 200000. i put the counter back after about 5 minutes of
toying with the script, and about two minutes later, the 200000th
visitor emailed me with the necessary secret code to claim his prize
(he chose a copy of the rockview interview cd [which was snatched out
from under caryn's nose at newbury comics -- that's what you get for
grabbing the bimh vinyl :)] from the options i gave him). i believe
his name is scott goss, and he's not on the list as far as i know.

and i suppose i owe mr. mackenzie something cool for 100000... :)

wow, what a boring story. sorry about that.

well, smart ass, you've just blown it. because i didn't say word one to ben
shepherd all night. not one. so if you're trying to allege that you WERE
at the hater show (ya, from winnipeg. us stupid americans DO know our
canadian geography... you'd be surprised), no chance now. i didn't bother
ben, i kept yelling at everyone to stop gawking at the poor guy (or at least
to do it subtly!). so there ya go.

on the other hand, without calling anyone names (get the feeling that poor
jamie is just starved for attention up there in winnipeg? i bet you do), i
will say this, a theory i voiced tonight while cooking dinner:

[DISCLAIMER: shroom, dena, vikki, you know i love you to death. do not take
this personally; shroom & vikki, i even told you t his in person. so please
don't get upset]

let's say you're ben shepherd. you recorded an album, then went out on
lollapalooza, came home, went to europe. got home and are looking forward
to hanging out in a bar you like to frequent and going to have fun with your
FUN side project. you get to sing and play guitar and do stuff you don't
normally do as "Ben SHepherd of Soundgarden". it's your night to kick back
and have fun. hang out with your friends. *relax*.

a little side item: Seattle residents are very respectful of the local
musicians no matter how fucking famous they are. it's not the locals that
go and hang out in front of eddie vedder's house, it's fucking tourists
(trust me, you should see some of the email five horizons has gotten). and
when they go to shows, people just don't bother them. THIS IS THEIR HOME
AND THEY ARE ENTITLED TO PEACE WHEN THEY ARE AT HOME.

so you're ben, and you're looking forward to yr relaxing night at the ok.
and you walk in and there is a large bunch of fans from your internet
mailing list camped out at the venue starting at 5pm (for a show that starts
at 9, and everyone in seattle knows not to show up before 10 or 11).
they're turning up at your manager's office asking for PHOTO PASSES to the
show. it's not so much the autographs and the handshakes, it's the fact
that you can't even walk to the men's room without heads turning every time
you do. people who are just hanging out at the ok hotel because it's in
pioneer square, an area with a lot of clubs, or even because the damn place
was in 'singles' cannot help but notice and then they probably start
asking, 'who are those guys' and everyone has heard of soundgarden, so now
THEY start staring. in short, your every move is now being accounted for,
and what's more, it'll be broadcast all over the world within 24 hours time.

and then some local wannabe musician (and with all due respect to brian
wood, but if we saw more talent and less attitude, he might get somewhere)
shows up and starts hassling the shit out of you. this, too, you know is
going to be everywhere in a matter of minutes. so you react -- badly.
instead of having a good time and not giving a damn what happens, suddenly
you have to be "Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden".

this doesn't excuse his behavior; it's just the only explanation i can come
up with. and yes, i spoke with matt, but i did something very different
than the rest of the group: i wasn't camped out at the front gawking, i
approached him directly and politely, *GAVE* him something (not just taking,
giving), had a short conversation, thanked him for his time... and then i
*LEFT*. backed away. guys... did you REALLY think that matt wanted to hang
out with us? c'mon. really. yeah, maybe in chicago they do. but here in
seattle? he wanted to hang out with his friends, with the grrl in the
mermaid costume that showed up (were chris andrea and I the only one to take
that hint????). not a bunch of fans.

but jamie, you're wrong.  shroom is not a psycho; dena is not a psycho;
vikki is not a psycho. a little overzealous at times? perhaps, but that's
hardly a crime and is no one's business but their own. perhaps you're just
jealous that they have the courage to act on their desires.

Yes. This is kinda' the theme of the video. Blow up the outside world? He
wants it to blow up, so when it does he smiles :-)

>2. There were about 3 images of Hitler! What's the director's obsession
>with this German asshole anyway?
I'd tell you but I haven't talked to the director lately . . .

>3. Anyone wanna comment on the images "Father, Mother, Me, and >Love"?
Not really. I can't really remember the images for Father, Mother, and Love,
but I do remember all the "me"s being images of people isolated: one in a
prison, another that just seemed to show a person alone in the middle of
nowhere (well, it's probably somewhere, but I don't know where, so to me
it's nowhere), etc. Images of people isolated from the outside world, once
again, "blow up the outside world" . . .

"head down . . head down . . . head down hide that smile . . . " .. . just
a thought . . . ;-)

I doubt this, at least that it's from Chris, since that other guy (from the
Ramones was it?) generally "created" the video (you know what I mean) . . .
not Chris . . . unless the other guy was sending the "Fuck You" . . . folks
that have seen "The Clockwork Orange," was the guy in this position in that?

I'm there :) Brisbane Sommsfest 97! :) since we get them early in 97 :)
Anyone heard from Jackhammer in awhile? maybe South Africa got the =
better of
him.

Hi folks. Jackhammer is around - he just hasn't resubscribed to the =
list since his trip to South Africa. I've forwarded the posts re SG =
coming to Australia to him, and I'll forward this one as well. I'm SURE =
he'll be in a Brisbane Sommsfest 97 if there is one! Hey, how about you =
all coming down to the Adelaide Sommsfest 97???? I'll even offer you =
all free accommodation!!

Am I the only South Aussie on this list? =20
[sigh]
Oh well, I guess that means I get to have Soundgarden all to =
myself................
