Alright I liked the video and all but some things struck a nerve, ie: when
you see a piture of Hitler and it says "enemy" and then a picture of Nixon
w/the same title. Nixon may not have been all that great of a guy but not
evil to the magnitude of Hitler. Save your flames and DO NOT I repeat DO
NOT bring up H2Ogate. I am not in the mood. All in all the video was fine,
not exceptional.
Walpurgis night is German and is celebrated on the eve of may day and is
associated with a witches' sabbath. St. Walpurga's (or Walburga) feast
falls on this date.

Believe it or not, Caryn, I think what happened to you sucks! That bullshit
shouldn't happen to anyone.
Just keep in mind that soundgarden are four guys, people, humans ect. They
aren't deities. They can be pricks just like the rest of us. It sucks to
find out that someone you thought was cool is a douche', but at the same time
it isn't all that suprising.
Try a little ice. 20 min on, 20 min off, that should bring the swelling down.

PS - Ben looks like he could be a dick anyway.

this should be a happy, enthusiastic post about what a great time we all had
at the hater show last night. it's not.

all of us got there very very VERY early last night and staked out the front
of the stage -- and then spent the show fending off drunk assholes who took
advantage of the fact that it was mostly grrrls at the front of the stage
and spent the ENTIRE SHOW intentionally and deliberately "moshing" (read:
run full into us from as far back as they could go, repeatedly). who kept
yelling, 'ben, play something fast so these pussies in the front will get
out of the way'.

this wasn't moshing. i grew up in mosh pits -- black flag, the dead
kennedys, the circle jerks, the clash. NO ONE behaved like the assholes
last night did, or the *crowd* would throw them out, if the bouncers didn't
first. and if that didn't happen, the band would speak up. (but that's
another point i'll get to later) this was violence for violence's sake.
licence to kill, practically.

notice how all the pro-moshing posts are from guys? of course they are. no
one's going to be putting their hands all over you, or rubbing their dick up
against you. no one's saying, 'oh good, it's a girl. i can beat the shit
out of her and she'll move', which is what was happening last night.
misongystic assholes with small dicks. there was such hatred in their eyes
and such glee when they would grab us and we would react. these are the
kind of fuckheads who beat up their girlfriends. this one guy kept taunting
shroom over and over and over again to the point where i almost beat the
shit out of him. chris spent the show going back and forth along our line,
trying to keep everyone from getting the shit beat out of them. aaron had
to leave, i think because he probably would have killed someone. ryan
almost did. and the assholes knew exactly what they were doing. the only
way they can prove that they are men is to beat the shit out of someone in
public.

[*ahem* disclaimer--> i know not all men are like this. i know a great many
of you on this list are not like this. no one i know is like this. so you
walk around in this little bubble of equality and humanism, and then you run
into people like this. it's *1996* for christ's sake. you'd think we'd
have evolved beyond this... i guess not]

this was not about energetic expression of enjoying the music. this was
about 5 guys deciding that we didn't belong down front and them deciding to
beat the crap out of us. that is what the mosh pit these days is USUALLY
about. if you wanted to see energetic expression of enjoying the music, you
should have looked at us.

the evening began with some brainless fuck throwing shit at ben -- spitting,
lit cigarettes, lemons, ice. so, ben spit at him (cool, i hear you say. so
why did me and andrea and chris have to get spit on as well? i'm sorry, but
it is NOT AN HONOR). and then a few songs later, ben got tired of it and
jumped in the audience to go after the idiot.

cool, right?

no, because he (i mean *BEN*) fucking kicked *me* -- HARD -- in the nose and
lip when he did it. it's still swollen, my lip is still swollen, and i
couldn't breathe all night.

and to make matters worse, he didn't even fucking APOLOGIZE when he got back
onstage. i was sitting on the edge of the stage, badly shaken up, bruised
and crying -- and no one on that stage gave a damn. no one.

so why didn't i move, some of you probably are asking (aside from those of
you secretly glad that i got the shit beat out of me)?

because moving would have let the assholes win. i wanted to see that
fucking show! i had a 102.5 temperature all day yesterday, i didn't go to
work, and i dragged my sorry ass to the damn hater show because i've been
looking forward to it since they announced it. i waited there since 8pm and
i sat down front on the stage through some very sucky bands and i had EVERY
RIGHT TO BE THERE.

although, to tell you the truth, it was wasted. the whole thing was wasted
on me. they were great. they played really well. andrea said that it was
the best she had ever seen them. if soundgarden broke up they'd have
nothing to worry about. i stayed down front to take pictures though my
heart wasn't in it any longer, for seth and justin, mostly justin, who will
never get to see hater probably. i was also so shellshocked and the crowd
was so bad i wouldn't have known where to go, besides home.

i was angry at ben and matt for letting the crowd continue. no other club
in seattle would have permitted that. and ben fucking OWNS the ok! i was
angry at them for letting macho dickheads fuck with their loyal fans, even
if they happen to be women. i was angry at my own hypocricy for not moving,
for sitting through the show.

and now, without sounding overly dramatic, i don't know what to do. i am so
unbelievably disgusted at ben and matt's behavior that there's no way it
can't effect how i feel about soundgarden in future. i lost all respect for
them last night. this is how much they care about their fans? if so, i
really want nothing to do with this band. if eddie vedder can stop a
stadium of 50,000 people, they could have taken two fucking seconds to stop
the mess last night. andrea's seen them four times now and it has NEVER
been like this. it should never be like it was.

</negativity>

hanging out with everyone was fun last night. chris and i gave matt a copy
of our recently-acquired 1st generation temple of the dog live video and got
to talk to him about pearl jam. he actually answered a couple of really
vital and long unknown questions and was really nice about the whole thing.
(i'm going to write up what we found out and put it on my pearl jam page
first gang -- i'm sorry, i'm not going to waste it here. we've been waiting
for this for MONTHS, if not years ;-) ). i had a ramones button to give to
ben but i didn't have a good moment and i didn't want to bother him and now
quite frankly i'm glad i didn't because he doesn't fucking deserve it. real
punk rockers give a shit about what happens in the pit.

i know that dena talked to john mc bain and he specifically mentioned chris
mackenzie by name. ;-) i also suspect that both john and matt are big who
fans, because when matt asked us if we were going to watch hovercraft and
chris and i told him that we've seen them a zillion times, he asked us if it
was true that they opened for the who, which they did. they were really
bummed. ;-) when john was tuning later he started playing a little bit of
the 'overture' from tommy! it was great and i even yelled for them to play
a who song later, in one of the few calm and enjoyable moments during the
show. (chris yelled for 'sheena is a punk rocker' and ben gave him the
strangest look...)

but still... when i think about it it all makes me sick. this is the same
band that printed 'NO MOSHING OR CROWDSURFING' on the tickets for chicago.
it would have taken one word. one. this is a club that holds about 150-200
- -- you can't tell me they didn't see, VERY CLEARLY, exactly what was going
on. so either they didn't care... or they thought it was okay. and that's
something i'm going to have to think about very long and hard. it's
certainly going to affect how i act as a fan. i'll probably buy the
records, but they are in my eyes no longer worry of my extra money, devotion
and energy. i'm not going to be checking seth's web page for typos/errors
when i can't sleep at 3am (although i'd probably do it because i consider
seth a friend).

i know that shroom et al tried to stay after the show to give matt and ben
their somms shirts. i don't know what happened because we didn't stay.
andrea left as quickly as she could before i had a chance to remember that
it was THURSDAY and therefore no busses at 2am. chris and i ran outside and
managed to grab a cab. there was no way i was going to be able to stay
without confronting the guys about their behavior, and i didn't want to ruin
it for everyone else.

we are the kind of fans a band really WANTS at the end of the day and i'm
not so sure that soundgarden deserve us.

Two things:

First, did anybody go to the Buddy Rich scholarship thing that Matt
supposedly played at last night (11/4) in NYC? I saw a blurb about it
last night on the Offical SG Web Page and then frantically tried to find
out more. I looked for info in the Voice and Time Out but didn't see any
mention of it. Did it really happen?

Second, I have one (possibly two) extra tickets for the SG Sunday show in
NYC. If anyone has extra tickets for the Friday or Saturday shows and
would like to trade, please contact me. I may be willing to do a two for
one deal (you give me one, I give you two).

Hell, I had a feeling I'd be bombarded with mail when I came in this
morning. 200 messages!! Hey, that's what happens when a good SG video
debuts. Anyway, here's my denarii worth of BUTOW opinions, etc.

This is one of the great SG videos of all time. I didn't
understand the video too well, but I'm an artist, and I liked the special
effects, the mood of the video, and the other "artistic" stuff. Whoever
said that Chris was looking skinny lately was right. I said, "DAAAAMN!"
He could be Kate Moss' brother!
There were also things I didn't thoroughly understand--but hey,
that's the trend in videos nowadays. For example:

1. Anyone notice that Chris would smile when things would blow up on the screen?
2. There were about 3 images of Hitler! What's the director's obsession
with this German asshole anyway?
3. Anyone wanna comment on the images "Father, Mother, Me, and Love"?

There are other things I noticed too. Ben always has his head down in this
video. I thought about the other SG vids and photos, and I realized that
Ben has his head down a number of times throughout the years. Anyone have
any explanation for that?
Also, this may sound a bit extreme, but I thought that Chris would be
sending a big "Fuck You" message to eMTyV for banning JCP--he was in a
Jesus Christ pose the whole time(sitting down). Yeah, I know--it's a bit
out there!

Sorry, I'm not going to include Caryn's post because most of you have read

I have waited for the response of any SOMMSter who went to the Hater show.
I was just flabbergasted to read Caryn's posts in regard to the show. I
can't feel the same way she does, because I wasn't there. I can't say that
I will not look at the band the same ever again. You have to wonder,
what's up with Matt and Ben? It's really sickening what happened that
night. Not only did they not take their fans seriously, but they don't
take women seriously either. I may be going way off the mark on that one.
Anyway, I think that Caryn's post will make SOMMS digest history. Any new

Subject: Hater show

Hello everyone!!! I just wanted to say that it was great getting to
see all the Seattle Sommsters on Halloween night!! Shroom
and Dena--I hope you make it back up here real soon!!! I thought I
would throw my few cents in about the show. I didn't know what to
expect from Hater. I had never heard them before and the only
comments I heard about them was that they sounded different than SG.
I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought they
sounded great and was very impressed. Music-wise I would have to say
that Hater has a new fan. I do have to agree with Caryn about the
crowds being way fucking out of control. I'm short and was one of
the ones in front. From this experience I now have atleast a dozen
bruises on my arms and legs. I did have to spend a good majority of
the time fighting off drunk assholes (and I am completely serious
about having to FIGHT them off) which unfortunately took away from
me enjoying the performance. Luckily (thanks in part to my bony
elbows which can come in handy when someone is trying to pound you
into the stage) I was able to stand my ground and remain were I
wanted to be--up front. Aside from the mutilation that occured
I overall had a great Halloween night. I even had the opportunity to
have a brief conversation with Ben after the show and take a few
pictures. It's going to be real interesting seeing how the crowd
reacts at the SG shows at Mercer Arena. I know the only reason I was
able to handle staying up front at the Hater show was because I was
only fighting off about a dozen drunks, whereas with SG there will be
much, much more. Hopefully, all will go well (though unfortunately I
doubt it). Once again I wanna say that it was great seeing
everyone!!! JEN

Chris Cornell? Who? Who's that? Oh yeah... isn't he that guy who
sings in the band that BEN SHEPHERD plays bass for? Kiddies... forget the
wolfboy frontman for awhile. Just think, mmmm..... BEN. Oh c'mon, don't get
me wrong...Chris is gorgeous. Everyone knows how I lust after the man... but
you don't know the meaning of true SEX APPEAL until you've stood three feet
away from Ben Shepherd while he's onstage with a ripped up shirt and a pissed
off look on his face. I'm totally serious, kiddies. Ben is ALL that... PLUS
a bag of chips. It's all him, man. (Heheheh, Ryan & Dena.)

We actually met Ben at the bar in the OK Hotel many hours before the
Hater show started. We also met Mattster (who has the handshake from HELL).
=) Dena will be the one to share all the details of that stuff. I'm just
here to tell you about BEN (ohmygoodnessgraciousthatguyisyummy!) SHEPHERD.
All I can say is AAAUUUUUGGHHHH!!! It was an AWESOME night... with the
exception of the moshers from hell. But don't worry, kiddies... the KTMS
kicked serious bootie. Vikki beat the hell out of several people (including
one guy that probably ended up with a concussion, hehehehe). Chris was
absolutely great, because he was trying to protect ALL of us (and we love him
for it, too). I tried to help, but after getting beat up buy my fellow
SOMMSters, I decided just to hang back for awhile (watch out for Jen... she
almost knocked the wind out of me once ;-)). Ben also got into a fight with
a guy who was throwing paper at him, and he got his shirt ripped up ALOT.
Picture Ben... seriously pissed, but happy to have just beat the hell out of
someone... shirt ripped all down the front, and half off him... pacing around
on this tiny stage. VERY SEXY, I must say. I was appreciating the chest
shots, in a HUGE way. But on the downside of the evening, Ben almost KILLED
Caryn while he was launching himself at the paper-thrower from the stage.
That was VERY uncool, because he could have just stopped the show and dealt
with it. He didn't need to hurt our Caryn to get his revenge on that guy.
And the moshers from hell should have been kicked out of the show, but for
some reason, there didn't seem to be ANY security at all. Something
definitely needs to be done about that immediately. Caryn was completely
right about that. I can also say that I've lost a bit of respect for SG for
not paying more attention to their truly dedicated fans during shows (like PJ
does). I never thought I'd be praising PJ over SG, but it's true. Vedder
*is* a more conscientious frontman than Chris. And Ben, for that matter.
<ouch> Blah... it hurts to admit something like that.

Aside from the lack of security and concern for fans... the show was
excellent, and Ben makes an mesmerizing frontman. All I have to say at this
moment is: "Chris who??" ;-) Heheheh...

Actually Erin just asked me if I had seen it because she does the

taken from alternative press, march '92.

...fragmentary conversation between Shepherd and the band's
off-tour tour manager, Dave, revolving somewhere between the unrelenting
vileness of MTV and standard record company rip-offs ends with Shepherd
murmuring, "The fans are the real bottom line, though. They're the ones
who get fucked, and they're the most important people."

looks like it slipped his mind, doesn't it?

Hello everyone. I just wanted to let the list know that imusic has a
contest giving away tickets to Seattle concerts (including
Soundgarden (both shows) and the Smashing Pumpkins, plus lots of
other bands playing at smaller clubs). So for anyone who is
interested check it out at: http://imusic.com/free

<note that the band will be in my area for approximately four
days. are they coming over to my house to help with the faq? only time
will tell. perhaps there will be a brisbane sommsfest 96? jackhammer?
lee? are you out there?>.

now that it is official, I'm happy to see that we here in the
southern hemisphere are not going to be soundgarden-deprived over the
coming summer. I'll be taking a stroll down to festival hall this
afternoon to take stock of ticket prices and the like. hopefully tickets
will go on sale this friday (much the same as newcastle), so littlejoe and
I have something other than study to do on thursday night.

small things of interest - while on the web things all things
appear equal, I'm told that all the non-big day out dates will be
announced in australian local press *before* the band is included in the
bdo lineup; the idea of course being to sell more tickets to the smaller
shows. that won't work on me, however, because I'll make sure that I'm at
*both* shows (and not moshing at either of them, to boot).

also, I have it on fairly good authority that the support band
will be none other than you am I. some listers may remember that it was
you am I who first supported soundgarden here in 94, and then were asked
by the band to come play with them on their u.s domestic tour. seems that
neither band can get enough of each other, and I can honestly say that
this will probably turn out to be the show of the year. look for you am I
(a band that won 6 australian music awards a month or two back) to also be
included on the bdo bill soon. perhaps while soundgarden pull out some
old material for us <crossing fingers for 'holy water'>, you am I will
grace us with 'berlin chair'?

lastly, an interesting coincidence comes to mind. soundgarden
will be one of the few bands to play at two different lollapalloozas and
big day outs, and will also be the headliners (for all intents and
purposes) at the finals of both fetivals. neat, eh?

	Good Evening Sommsters,
I have been reading the list for a couple of weeks, guess you'd call me a
lurker. I have a question; are BMF/SOMMS cd's totally hard to find or is
it just a matter of looking in some decent shops? I'd be very interested
in finding one. Any info, email me back. Thanks for your help, and Caryn,
I hope you are feeling better.

I found this in the list archive using the handy search icon
(because I couldn't quite remember what the exact answer was). so in the
interest of informing new sommsters and reminiscing over old posts, this
is what lamont sanford had to say:

"I just want to add something to the question about satanism in
soundgarden music. Matt Cameron publishes himself under the label
"Walpurgis Night Music". Look at the notes for "Fresh Tendrils" or
(mostly) anything of BadMotorFinger. For those of you not informed about
what Walpurgis Night is: I believe it is the longest night of summer and
on the Satanists calandar it is the second most important holiday, after
one's birthday."

the list mother also felt obliged to add this (on halloween, no
less): "It means that Matt is a very smart boy and he knows some trivia
that may perk someone attention - like yours maybe. I don't know about
the rest of you, but I love Halloween - does that make me a worshipper of
the black arts (unless you understand that a witch can practice both white
and black magic). All Hollows Eve is not a Christian celebration. In
fact here in the United States, there are some religious sect that want to
do away with Halloween - they see it as a pagan holiday. So, in a few
weeks - come to my house and I'll give you some candy - I just love little
monsters and ghouls, put them in the pot and boil, boil, turmoil and
trouble, eye of.........."

I also just did a little snooping around, and (interestingly)
noted that there is a walpurgis website which concentrates on the
"development and production of small scale and contemporary opera and
music theatre, commisioning composers and artists from within the
contemporary performing arts to write and create new works". the front
page also (in a large coincidence) can be roughly interpreted as an
upside-down forest...

there is also a walpurgis nacht (night in german, I imagine) page,
which deals with a bunch of vampire/horror sort of stuff. I wonder if
there is a connection between matt's spooky choice of publishing title and
his inclusion on the score to that schlocky-horror/comedy _attack of the
killer tomatoes_?

C'mon people! Let's get our act together! All SOMMSters
going to the Brandeis show, we should find a place to meet before the show.
I suggest the Commuter Rail Station nearest to the auditorium. PLEASE offer
other places. I would really like to meet all of you before the show.
 Thanks a lot!

sorry deb, but if ben didn't see it, there was no way that matt or john or
whoever didn't see it. NO WAY. he chose to ignore it. he knew it
happened. he didn't care. they didn't care.

a few days ago geoff wrote the list asking for feedback from those who
downloaded the jcp mpeg. well, i downloaded it (it only took me about one
and a half hours), and all i can say is i'm awestruck. i'm really not all
that into videos, but i really like this one. besides the quality of the
video itself, i thought that geoff did a really good job encoding it. on a
change of subject, i am actually going to get SOMMS for free! thats'
right-absolutely free. a friend of mine picked it up used a few years back,
but i didn't know he had it until a few days ago. he said he never listens
to it, so i could have it. what a friend! misguided, but a friend still.
also, to add my opinion to the moshing thread, i think moshing just to hurt
people sucks. if you're gonna do that shit, go to the restroom and beat
your brains out on the fucking wall(better yet, bang your head against the
mirror-it'll seem like you're hurting somebody else). it'll do all of us
who actually want to enjoy the concert a favor. away from that, only 23
days until the austin concert. i'd really like to hear from those who are
going to that one also, so email me if you are. one more thing, and then
i'll be through. i recieved my somms apparel last friday, and it looks
excellent. i especially like the cap. Thanks, Dena for doing such a good
job.,Nix

Transcribed by (Stephanie Valahovic) from imusics rebroadcast (in R.A.

of Rock and the Environment. Please excuse my words in parenthesis
(...).

The transcript features Kim Thayil, and his viewpoints on: Ecological
Models:

Introduction: "Lets hear what Kim Thayil of Sondgarden has to
say about how the Man species treats other species we share the
planet with and what effect this has on the environment."

Kim Thayil: "We live in a very species-less
(?our narcissistic preoccupation withourselves?) society where
we sometimes hold some of our own in high regard than we do other
species. Its all very important because the ecosystem is very fragile,
down to the algae to the largest mammal in a particular niche.
They all play an important role in maintaining the balance of
that niche. I dont think people understand that, the ecology or
environmental biology is not something many people have easy access to
(PBS, just a thought) Its not a subject of our popular TV shows,
records, or movies, so, people have a poor understanding of these
things. Its harder to explain to them that if you take one
species out how it will effect the animal and plant species.
They are like a very delicate little assemblage of puzzles.
When you take one piece out, its like pulling out one can of
a pile of cans ( I suspect he means from the bottom) in a grocery
store, and the whole pyramid collapses. Its harder to explain or show
how particular populations have to regulate each other (i.e.. the
extinction
of the pacific salmon and how that going to effectthe animals that
depend
on them for survival, or the introduction of ocean barnacles into
the great lakes by way of the Saint Lawrence sea way.) how if one
population diminishes in size that competing populations will grow
larger
(i.e.. in California, mountain lions have attacked and injured or killed
a many small children because of our encroachment into thier
habitat and our need to destroy there staple diet, rodents)
that a simple way to explain it. I can still see how some would
pick up on that."
